Dubstep is pretty extreme, so is Extratone/Splittercore, and aphex twin isn’t a genre.

It’s the same with Javanese Gamelan: those of us from the western European musical tradition aren’t accustomed to listening to modal/heterophonic music. But we can learn, if we want.

Rest assured, great classical Indian music is ranked as one of the pinnacles of the worldwide art by most musicologists. As to Gamelan, I’ll let Claude Debussy do my talking for me: “Listened to without prejudice, this makes the best of European music seem a barbarous clang fit for accompanying a traveling circus.”

Your description of Indian music, however, is downright bizarre.I went looking for something to compare it to, and discovered that the Wikipedia entries for “Classical Indian Music” and “Raga” contain the same errors (they also have a big disclaimer at the top saying the article has not been checked by an expert)….so it’s probably not the listmaker’s personal fault. In fact Ragas are not just-tempered (they’re aggregated from a series of just-tempered microtonal resources called “shrutis”); the music is not monophonic (it’s heterophonic), and so forth. So for the folks reading this list w3ho liked the Ravi Shankar section,m it’s best to ignore the description and just listen to the music. Put a big thumping beat behind it and it makes the best House/Techno sound going.

I was also pleased to see the number of responders who like Richard James (Apex Twin). Put me down for more bizarre music lists from a variety of authors with different tasted.
