Rosalia Lombardo gets everyone I think. I had a picture of her as my screensaver for a few years and people never failed to comment on how amazingly lifelike she looked. "She looks like she's just sleeping" was the most common comment I recieved. They were always astonished when I told them she'd been dead for more than 80 years.

This is really awesome!! I find myself liking these sort of things recently, not sure why though. Seeing mummified remains, half decomposing corpses, too bad you only had a few pictures, but it's still great.

I was there in the summer of 2007. our favorite creepy display was a wall of babies, most of them standing on shelves; a little one at the very top had its arm extended and was pointing a finger. Rosalia Lombardo was a bit hard to find. she's not in some special display all by herself, but from what I recall is a few feet behind a little gate with another child or two.

the whole thing is in a church basement, which is creepy enough (though that basement's particular chemical environment is what made the mummies possible). I'm terrified of wax museums and I made it through this place alright. the lighting isn't terribly dim, and there were enough people milling about that it didn't feel like we were stuck alone in a macabre maze of dead people. the shock gradually subsides enough that you may slip into that museum-trance, absorbed by all the displays...just don't get so entranced that when a particularly freaky specimen snaps you out of it, you find yourself alone aisles away from anything with a pulse. this isn't like getting lost in the grocery store, people. use the buddy system!

This list is a beautiful tribute to the dead in these catacombs. Especially the way you had the readers see them as people and a thought on what their life was like rather than just see them as a pile of bones.

I actually visited the Capucin Catacombs twice in July this year (2011) and it was amazing. The walls are decorated with filigree - but its of bone!! There are chandaliers, over 3500 skeletons are housed in the one building alone. Its very nodescript and unless you'd have heard of it before you would never have even thought to pay the monastry a visit. Most of these images you won't see when you visit it.

You cannot take photos inside and its a few Euro donation to enter (I may have snapped one or two sneakily - i'm already going to hell so meh but I was discreet unlike the loud stereotypical American black woman goin OH MY GAWWD - she pissed me off thoroughly, her husband actually left because he was scared lol)

Also, there is some really good restaurants just up the street hehe.
