I was gonna say ... Javert didn't kill himself because he couldn't bear to be in a world without good. He killed himself because he was so utterly inflexible in his beliefs that he couldn't bear the thought that he might, perhaps, have been wrong all these years about right and wrong. His views were so rigid and fixed that there was no room for the possibility that a man who stole a loaf of bread might not be the same as a murderer. I don't think Javert was evil, just very inflexible.

Abdiel from To Reign in Hell by Steven Brust would make this list. A modern take on Paradise Lost, To Reign in Hell is basically a story of the rebellion in Heaven. Yet, it starts because Abdiel is selfish and afraid and performs acts to get what he wants only to start a rebellion. Satan is completely oblivious to the rebellion for most the novel, then is thrown in at the end.
