Moscow doesn't trust tears (Oscar for international movie-nuff said)funny and smart, one of the best
17 Moments of Spring-the everyone's beloved movie in the former Soviet Union; Tichonov used to be the leading man, Russian Marlon Brando, De Niro, Newton, you name.. the most intelligent movie about Rus. spy among Nazies.
Oligarch -Mashkov is the sexiest Russian actor nowadays
The Thief- his greatest game, if i am not mistaken, Oscar for international movie
Dog's Heart - the movie that explains the nature of revolutions or so-called "springs" in the best possible way- my favorite: based on the story written by Bulgakov- author of "Master and Margarita".. even Stalin wasn't brave enough to kill him. M&M is the best book ever (for me:)
A Cruel Romance- not my fave, but the kind that "everyone watches",beautiful and romantic, very Russian if ya know what i mean
Gentlemen of Fortune-was a blast then back but only for those who gets "inside" jokes from the Soviet past
Come and See-yeah, not for the faint of hearts
I am a Russian Soldier -highly recommended
Office Romance-every New Year eve movie from my childhood, so good:)
Ladies Taylor- abut Babi Yar tragedy
Ekipazh- the first and the best Russian "disaster-movie", kept me on the edge of a coach :)
Zvezda Plenitelnogo Schastya- quote from Pushkin's poetry; every girl 12-20-years old cried her eyes out, best romance about December's rebels
Nutcracker- better than American one in my humble opinion
Cherlock Holms- claimed to be the best interpretation by Elizabeth II (!), might be a bit slow but really good
Tomorrow Was The War-good one
Scarlet Sails- old but beautiful
The White Sun of Desert -first Russian action movie, one of the most famous and quoted
THESE movies used to be the most watched and quoted, they are soulful and meaningful.. though there are some missing here 'cose they..um require knowledge of different dialects, like South-Russian one, for example..they won't be the same with translation.
enjoy:)

Great list and unusual selection. This all list looks rather academic or as some other members put it - boring.
I am from Ukraine and on TV we don't normally watch those movies, except maybe Solaris, but it is also quite unpopular. There must be a separate list, "Movies that people of ex-Soviet republics watch and re-watch". One of the most popular topics is about WW2 (for instance, Only «Old Men» Are Going to Battle), there are a lot of comedies (Gentlemen of Fortune, Big School-Break, Operation Y and Other Shurik's Adventures and lots and lots of others!), sci-fi and cartoons which are highly praised over the Disney's ones.
post-soviet movies, honestly, are not so good. There are two which stayed in my memory - Brother (1997) and Night Watch (2004)

you might also like to try and watch on youtube the epic series about a russian spy in nazi Germany
