The world is full of secret and exclusive places that we either don’t know about, or simply couldn’t visit if we wanted to. This list takes a look at ten of the most significant places around the world that are closed to the general public or are virtually impossible for the general public to visit.
Mezhgorye is a closed town in Russia which is believed to house people working on the highly secret Mount Yamantaw. The town was founded in 1979. Mount Yamantaw stands at 1,640 metres (5,381 ft) and is the highest mountain in the southern Urals. Along with Kosvinsky Mountain (600 km to the north), it is suspected by the United States of being a large secret nuclear facility and/or bunker. Large excavation projects have been observed by U.S. satellite imagery as recently as the late 1990s, during the time of Boris Yeltsin’s pro-Western government after the fall of the Soviet Union. Two garrisons, Beloretsk-15 and Beloretsk-16, were built on top of the facility. Repeated U.S. questions have yielded several different responses from the Russian government regarding Mount Yamantaw. They have said it is a mining site, a repository for Russian treasures, a food storage area, and a bunker for leaders in case of nuclear war.
This has been mentioned on a previous list – the archives are not secret despite their names. You can view any document you wish. But you cannot enter the archive. You must submit your request for a document and it will be supplied to you. Despite the foolishness of the recent junk from Ron Howard and Dan Brown (Angels and Demons) the documents are all available and there are no copies of suppressed scientific theories or great works that were banned. The only documents you can’t access are those which are not yet 75 years old (in order to protect diplomatic and governmental information). Indexes are available for people who want to see if a document exists in the archives. The Vatican Secret Archives have been estimated to contain 52 miles (84 km) of shelving, and there are 35,000 volumes in the selective catalogue alone.
Contrary to popular belief, Disneyland has a full liquor license which is used when the place closes down to the general public to accommodate private parties. But there is one place in Disneyland that is always open to sell booze: Club 33. Club 33 is a private club located in the heart of the New Orleans Square section of Disneyland. Officially maintained as a secret feature of the theme park, the entrance of the club is located next to the Blue Bayou Restaurant at “33 Royal Street” with the entrance recognizable by an ornate address plate with the number 33 engraved on it. Fees for joining range from 10 – 30 thousand US dollars and membership comes with a car park. If you want to join the club, you have to go to the end of the fourteen year waiting list.
Metro-2 in Moscow, Russia is a purported secret underground metro system which parallels the public Moscow Metro. The system was built supposedly during (or from) the time of Stalin and codenamed D-6 by the KGB. Russian journalists have reported that the existence of Metro-2 is neither confirmed nor denied by the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) or the Moscow Metro administration. The length of Metro-2 is rumored to exceed even that of the “civil” (i.e. public) Metro. (It is said to have 4 lines and lie 50 to 200 m deep. It is said to connect the Kremlin with the FSB headquarters, the government airport at Vnukovo-2, and an underground town at Ramenki, in addition to other locations of national importance. Needless to say, the fact that no one confirms its existence makes it pretty difficult to visit.
White’s is the most exclusive English gentlemen’s club. It was founded in 1693 by Italian Francesco Bianco (Francis White) to sell the newly discovered hot chocolate but eventually became a typical (but extremely private) gentlemen’s club. The club is famous for its “betting book” in which members make bizarre gambles. The most famous of which is a 3,000 pound bet on which of two raindrops would slide down the window first. So why is this club on the list? Women are excluded completely from membership, so that is half our audience out. Secondly, men who want to join this exclusive club can only do so if invited by a sitting member who has the support of two other members. Unless you are a member of royalty, or are extremely powerful in politics or the arts, you are unlikely to ever see the exclusive White’s invitation.
I have put this so high on the list because it is the one place most readers are likely to expect to see. Area 51 is a nickname for a military base that is located in the southern portion of Nevada in the western United States, 83 miles (133 km) north-northwest of downtown Las Vegas. Situated at its center, on the southern shore of Groom Lake, is a large secretive military airfield. The base’s primary purpose is to support development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems. The intense secrecy surrounding the base, the very existence of which the U.S. government barely acknowledges, has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories and a central component to unidentified flying object (UFO) folklore. The sign above states that deadly force can be used if people enter the Area 51 zone.
Room 39 or Bureau 39 is arguably one of the most secretive organizations in North Korea that seeks ways to obtain foreign currency for Kim Jong-il, North Korea’s Chairman of the National Defense Commission. Room 39 was established in the late 1970s. It has been described as the lynchpin of the North’s so-called “court economy” centered on the dynastic Kim family. It is unknown how the name originated. Very little is known about Room 39 due to the secretive nature surrounding the organization, but it is widely speculated that the organization uses 10 to 20 bank accounts in China and Switzerland for the purposes of counterfeiting, money laundering, and other illicit transactions. It is also alleged that Room 39 is involved in drug smuggling and illicit weapon sales. It is known, however, that the organization has 120 foreign trade companies under its jurisdiction and is under the direct control of Kim Jong-il. North Korea has denied taking part in any illegal activities. Room 39 is believed to be located inside a ruling Workers’ Party building in Pyongyang, the capital city of North Korea.
The Ise Grand Shrine in Japan (which is actually a series of over 100 shrines) is the most sacred shrine in Japan. It is dedicated to Amaterasu (the Sun goddess) and has been in existence since 4BC. The main shrine is alleged to hold the most important item in Japan’s imperial history: the Naikū (the mirror from Japanese mythology which eventually ended up in the hands of the first emperors). The shrine is demolished and rebuilt every 20 years in keeping with the Shinto idea of death and rebirth (the next rebuilding will be in 2013). This ranks very high on the list of places you will never go because the only person who can enter is the priest or priestess and he must be a member of the Japanese imperial family. So unless we have a Japanese prince or princess reading the site, no one here will ever see anything more than the thatched roof of the Ise Grand Shrine.
This is a place that is not only closed to the public, but it is a place that the public hope to never have to enter! In most “end of the world” films we see these days, there is always a highly classified area where US government officials and a chosen few get to go in the hopes that they can escape the impending doom. The Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center is the real thing. It was set up in the 1950s due to the cold war but continues to operate today. It is a “last hope” area. For obvious reasons its operations are highly classified. It is run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The center is already functioning and even in small local disasters in the US, much of the telecommunications traffic is routed through it.
RAF Menwith Hill is a British military base with connections to the global ECHELON spy network. The site contains an extensive satellite ground station and is a communications intercept and missile warning site and has been described as the largest electronic monitoring station in the world. The site acts as a ground station for a number of satellites operated by the US National Reconnaissance Office, on behalf of the US National Security Agency, with antennae contained in a large number of highly distinctive white radomes, and is alleged to be an element of the ECHELON system. ECHELON was reportedly created to monitor the military and diplomatic communications of the Soviet Union and its Eastern Bloc allies during the Cold War in the early 1960s, but since the end of the Cold War it is believed to search also for hints of terrorist plots, drug dealers’ plans, and political and diplomatic intelligence. It has also been involved in reports of commercial espionage and is believed to filter all telephone and radio communications in the nations which host it – an extreme violation of privacy.

I just love lists like these. Others would call people who come up with these things paranoid but like the boy scout motto, “Always Prepared”; it’s good to be always prepared for anything.
Off Topic: Just listened to your interview with CBC Jamie. Always pictured you as a high pitched voice guy based on your profile photo. Not that being a bit low pitch is a bad thing.

Very interesting list, though I do wonder about the Japanese shrine, if it is rebuilt ever 20 years, then technically the builders get to go inside as they are demolishing and then building it again. Makes me wonder who the builders are.

Recently The Vatican released Henry VIII`s love letters to Anne Boleyn. And the things he wrote.. “I`d like to feel your duckies..” “My heart will be devoted to you alone, and hopefully my body will be so too..” And he signed the letter, “K.H seeks A.B..” It makes you want to puke.

Re: Ise Shrines
While the shrines themselves aren’t accessible to the public, they can get pretty close to the compound by visiting the Mie Prefecture. One of my art history profs was obsessed with this place. She spent nearly a whole day discussing just this one area and given that we had hundreds of artworks and architecture to go over for the semester, it was a big deal. I remember she showed us photographs of her own visit to the prefecture and you could see the whole of three shrines, albeit from a high elevation and from a farther vantage point than the one Jamie put up here.
I would assume the carpenters “have access” to the shrine while they are building them or demolishing them. (although can it be called a shrine at that point?) One interesting fact about the building process: they use the same tools and procedures as their ancestors did with the first rebuilding and everything is done without nails.

i’ve been on menwith hill!! we call them the golf balls. i lived in a village near by and my next door neighbor worked in one of the biggest dishes, he was a technical advisor or something and their son went to school there. i went up there on a regular basis when i was about 8-11, i went shopping, fishing, and to a halloween party. i drove right next to the golf ball things, never went in one but right next to them. i remember there were armed guards on the gates and you had to show id but i went up there all the time just to rent dvds and stuff, we didn’t bat an eyelid at it!!
why is it number 1?? i know it’s all top secret but you can go in quite easily.

@Freshies (60): I’ve been inside a Mormon Temple. Not that exciting really. I wouldn’t rank it one of the top ten places you can’t go. The temples are really beautiful from the outside, but the insides are not that fancy. Also, there’s no alcohol (or coffee or even soda). So, I think Club 33 was a better entry.

I have been to 5 of the ten places listed on here although I was only able to “poke my head in” to the Vatican’s archives. Nope, they really don’t let you in. Went to Club 33 as a guest.
Went about 30 feet into White’s Gentleman’s Club to hand deliver a briefing to a member.
Went to Area 51 to help retrieve “something” that accidentally wnet there from our work at the NTS.
Went to Mt. Weather for a job interview (didn’t get it).
Stationed at RAF Menwith Hill while in the service.
Of all of these, the Vatican Archives was the most intriguing as I only got a 15 second peek. The other four were really nothing to write home about except to say I have been there. Nothing close to what Hollywood would have you think.

@apepper (20): That is true – there is an area in the Church they don’t allow others into, but it is a small area and it is most likely the claims about the Ark are false because they recently said they were going to reveal it on a certain date and then reneged at the last minute.

Greetings and New Year tidings from Scotland to you all. Long term reader and first time poster (on anything!) but just wanted to congratulate Mr Frater on a particularly interesting list which I’m sure will inspire further reading into this subject by many of us. Hope you and your other contributors keep up the great work for the coming year. Cheers.

I’ve been to Club 33 many times. My wife’s old boss is a member. It’s basically just a restaurant with a lot of neat old artwork and such put up. It’s expensive, though. You’ll spend at least $100 for food and drinks and you need to dress up. But it’s definitely worth seeing at least once. And you get to go to both parks for free, as long as you have a reservation!

Hi all,
Really good list today! I liked it a lot. Still… the words ‘tips’ and ‘iceburgs’ comes to mind. I’m glad you wrote this. I was thinking about doing something… also… but the true nature of item #1 prevents me from even thinking about it let alone the research. It’s true what they say, and if they don’t say it then they don’t really know do they? I’ve been kicked off the internet before for talking about ‘things’ – those horrible web-bots!
No matter.
I could also say there is no such gold in Fort Knox and thats why they don’t let anyone in – but that’s just AN OPINION! (grrr)

#1 is kind of silly. Its just like any other military installation around the world with ties to national security, satellite tracking, etc. Some are in the US, lots are scattered about the globe. Of course, being a military base, access is limited. Kind of funny how that works. Menwith hills is just 1 of many.
Club 33 started as a place where Walt Disney could host VIPs so theres alot of 1ofakind memorabilia and stuff. Wikipedia has a good description.

An excellent read, full of intrigue and hush hush fun.
I loved the inclusion on Club 33, as my father in law was the engineer who designed the layout of New Orleans Square at Disneyland. Alas, he passed away long before I had ever heard of the club, so I was never able to grill him about the “secret” areas involved.
Living 10 miles north of Disneyland also put us in the neighborhood of a string of Nike missile bases installed during the cold war era. They were a fabulous site for teenage games of daring as we partied and tried to enter their boundaries. You could get IN, but you couldn’t get FAR.
I like to think that we made the day of the bored personnel posted to guard duty. I’m thankful those guards never decided that our incursions deemed a “deadly force” response.

Re the Vatican archives: I love how people go so crazy over Dan Brown’s conspiracy stuff he uses in his stories; that is, people actually believe them. It’s fiction. Hello!
I don’t think I’d let anyone in either. There are extremely fragile and valuable documents in there and they don’t take well to being shuffled about. There are procedures for handling them. It’s not your local library.

@ yumyum, I loved the eloquence in which the list was written. The general meter agrees with me. I found that the photos help illustrate the words as I no longer have an imagination due to years of excessive partying. I find that any affirmation to the work put into a list is positive and be it that it may not be constructive, it still is nice to be told by one’s readers that they appreciate the work.

I’ve been in Club 33 twice, and from what I was told about it, Disney needed money to open his park. Well he got 33 investors, so he opened a club dubbed Club 33. My brother worked as a high level executive for one of these early investors, and was able to make reservations for me. You get free entrance to the park with reservations, of course it’s $60.00 per person to eat there. That was 9 years ago when I was there. things may have changed since then, but I got no super great parking spot. I had to waddle thru like everybody else.

What about places that are simply inaccessible? I think there should be a sequel to this list. Places like the middle of the Amazon, the bottom of the deepest parts of the ocean and places that are just impossible for people to get to due to remoteness or danger. What about the supposed location of Mount Sinai? I heard about it from a documentary and even though the rest of it wasnt very credible about the ten plagues the location they theorized as the actual Mount Sinai seemed very believable. @trfan (155): Actually, it is possible to go to Chernobyl, although it rarely happens. Most people end up in Prypiat, the nearby city (Call of Duty 4 enthusiasts will know about), and the nuclear reaction that caused the meltdown is encased in a solid concrete box known as the Sarcophagus. But a good portion of the radiation, both in Chernobyl itself and in the surrounding exclusion zone, has faded away enough to allow people to enter it. However, some areas remain unsafe, and should the Sarcophagus fail (which is likely, because it was built hastily and a good portion of it is stabilized by the damaged reactor walls), the whole disaster could essentially recur, making the area radioactive once again. But according to Wikipedia, a new much more sound structure is going to be completed by 2011 which will encase both the reactor and the Sarcophagus.

This list got me thinking about places I knew (as in ones that are near to me) but couldn’t enter. My old university (UCD in Dublin) has loads of tunnels beneath it. The campus was built around the time of the student riots in France in the 1960s. They were afraid that type of behaviour might spread to Ireland so they made the college ‘riot proof’. One of the things they did to do so was build tunnels connecting the main buildings so that the lecturers etc could escape in case of rioting students. I’m not sure how many they built and if the whole thing is still open. The entrance to one of them was in the arts building and you could go down a little way before meeting a locked door.
Any fellas who are still wanting to get into the ladies toilets may want to try Fibbers on Parnell Street. There are always guys in there!

The location of Mount Weather is well-known to most everyone in the Washington DC area. Its outside of Berryville, VA (near Winchester). At the time it was built, Berryville was considered rural, and it was far from the hustle and bustle of the national capital, but now its just part of Northern Va’s ever growing suburban sprawl. As such it doesn’t offer the safe retreat it once did, but still has practical use as mentioned in the above and other articles.

Or, the tunnels that were used as bomb shelters in WWII and later by BT? The entry to one of them is on Furnival St (east side of the street). If you get thirsty looking for it, it’s near the Castle pub. Well, okay, if you are in the market for unique fixer-upper opportunities, it probably isn’t so secret…

I would add:
The secret subway system(s) to get the President and congress out of DC. These are located under the main DC subway with side connections to the white house & congress.
The nuclear proof control bunkers for AT&T, MCI & Sprint. These carriers supply (or supplied in AT&T’s case) telecom services to the US government (military, white house, etc.) and are required to have survivable facilities. Good luck finding them.

well done – how do you find these places? you must have good research skills! as an aside story: I once got into Sudan by hiding on the top of a car on a freight train coming from Aswan (Egypt). Short story – got caught and escorted out, with a little help from my embassy along the way. not really recommended…

“the archives are not secret despite their names. You can view any document you wish. But you cannot enter the archive. You must submit your request for a document and it will be supplied to you.”
If you have to request the document, then you must know of its existence beforehand. You can’t enter and browse the archives. That’s de facto secrecy.

Club 33′s 14 year waiting list is now closed to new additions. You get valet parking at the Grand Californian Hotel, instant FastPasses for any E-ticket ride (no timestamp), access to the Lilly Belle Presidential Car caboose on the train, discounts at all Disney shops and restaurants, invitations to special events (like Candlelight and new attractions) and probably the best food you’ll ever eat anywhere, oiften next to movie stars and politicians. Disney employees are not given access to the Club.

I must say that while Club 33 is exclusive, it’s not completely closed only to members. Say for instance a business has a membership, they can invite employees who don’t have a membership to enjoy a meal and a visit to Disneyland. So, people like my mom have gone – multiple times. It’s not just for movie stars and corporate big wigs.

Mount Weather is definitely not a secret. I believe it has been decommissioned as an emergency government site, but FEMA is still doing work there. There are many employees from several different federal contractors who go to work there every day. It’s pretty mundane, actually.

“The shrine is demolished and rebuilt every 20 years in keeping with the Shinto idea of death and rebirth (the next rebuilding will be in 2013). This ranks very high on the list of places you will never go because the only person who can enter is the priest or priestess and he must be a member of the Japanese imperial family.”

Ron Howard and Dan brown haven’t created foolishness or junk. In fact, your knowledge of the Archives is probably not as great as Brown’s, due to the research required to write the book. I cannot take your word on that entry.
“You can view any document you wish” is most likely an exaggerated statement as well. You would need very good reason to view most documents housed there. I bet more people’s requests get denied than accepted.

I guess the only lucky guys who get to see all these mysterious places are the heads of their respective states.
I love the eerie feel of that U.S.base ( Area 51). It’s the simplest place of all but seems like the deadliest. It simply warns of a deadly force that can be used if someone tries to trespass. I have read stories about the U.S. and Russian air forces spotting strange alien entries. They don’t disclose it to the public. Another place that no one is allowed to enter are the deadly underground catamarans in Paris. Scary. They have hundreds of miles of multi-level tunnels that go deep into a maze. They were grave yards for 1000s of dead bodies. Anyone who gets inside rarely comes out. The French government has sealed the place.
Great list.

its a very nice list but i believe that if “mount athos”or “holy mountain”(agion oros in greek) ever come to your attention you will concider this list’s no1 place. since 1046!!!!! no women are allowed there till nowadays and even E.U. cant do anything about it.the reason is simple and stupid: because this place 350km2 is dedicated to monachism women are not allowed there because the monks will be tempted!!!!!and yes, in 34 years it will be a full 1000 (ONE THOUSAND)years that women are banned from there.
i’d appreciate a comment if you concidered this place while doing this list. thanx

The Disney Land one, that one you CAN see and get served if you have a meeting with the company you worked with. That was the cool thing about being a manager for Arby’s at the time. For those of us that were legal to drink, we got a free drink from them. They also have an auditorium in that club which we got to use as well. I guess their “membership” is only night time or certain days? The rest of the time they rent it out? Sure, you’re not joining the club. But that’s overrated anyways.

Too bad Room 39 attracted the attention of some seriously frighteningly powerful people. If N.Korea thinks they're going to be allowed to continue their stupid little games for more than five more years, they're in for one hell of a surprise.
It seems that Kim-jong-what's his face has pushed some people too far…and these people think N.Korea would be best turned into a massive stripmall.
Remember his latest health issues?
That was all a 'gentle warning' from these scary people,a little of this, and a little of that, one in his drink and another in his food…whammo, instant stroke, but nothing one cannot recover from.
This is no conspiracy theory,he's managed to seriously upset some very, very powerful and phenomenally wealthy people…the kind that buy and sell little companies like Microsoft and Apple like trading cards.
I used to work for these people, and I'm ecstatically happy that I'm not between them and Kimmy-jong-il…but I'll be just as happy to watch from the sidelines as they take away his bank accounts and make it impossible for him to do anything beyond throw the temper tantrums he's famous for…seriously, three years ago in China,he threw a fit just like a 3 year old when he was told the area was under strict curfew for the entire week and he couldn't leave the hotel.
He also expected us to speak Korean,he can't even ask where the toilet is in Cantonese!!!
I would call him an idiot, but I understand there is a minimum standard one has to achieve to be considered an idiot–which he hasn't managed yet.

well, your number one entry may not be the only place of this nature…
In Australia, there is a region called Pine Gap. It is in the middle of nowhere (google it)
There is a U.S. base there that looks like the number one entry on the list.
Access, as far as i know, is restricted on par with Area 51 in the States.
As for what goes on in there…Well, if memory serves me correct, a former Prime Minister (Gough Whitlam) told the yanks to pack up and go. Two days later, he was overthrown (ejected, sacked) by the Govener General. (and this was a Prime Minister that, if you asked most Australians, he was the most loved)…
Go figure…
And lets not start talk about missing Prime Minister Harold Holt…

Your comment about the Vatican archive is unfounded, you claim people can see any document, and that there are no hidden/special documents in the archive. Yet no-one may enter. So if only those who work for/in the library can see the documents that are actually inside how do we know such documents don't exist?
All we have is their word for it, and given the many other things the church covers up this is pretty minor and not unreasonable to assume there is something else in there.

Ive been to menwith hill, I still live close to there. I know someone who used to work there, and regularly had lunch there, I was only about 5 at time, so I can't remember too much, but what I do remember is they have really nice jelly, and I remember how the car used to be checked for bombs sometimes. The most recent time I went there was still quite a while ago, I was in my teens, and there were quite a few protesters at the enterance.

I've been there as well. The waiting list is not 14 years anymore. It is down to about 7 or so. The membership fee is $10k with yearly dues starting at $3k. It's just a glorified restaurant with alcohol. A place for wealthy people or corporations to get away and enjoy an expensive ($70) lunch or dinner. There is a dress code but it's not super strict.

I used to live on Menwith Hill, trust me its not that too exciting and just about any U.S. Military personal can get on it. Plus it may say "RAF" But the british have about absolutely nothing to do with it other than MOD to secure it, and contractors that help keep it maintain such as janitors and construction workers or repairing. The NSA, U.S. Military and American contractors run it. This is the most stupidest shit I have ever heard of.

They're probably secretly given brain cancer before they retire.
Wouldn't be much of a surprise considering they let a good chunk of their workers slowly and publicly die for years from RADIATION POISONING, after they were ordered to burn toxic waste. The base officials and even higher courts refused medical treatment to all involved, under pretense of National Security. (I wish this were a conspiracy rumor… It's a well-documented tragedy)
