Talk about a daunting proposition! I think you came through admirably; I thought your hierarchy was well thought out. Being one for the here and now however, I must add Pat Metheny as a MAJOR contemporary artist of influence. His body of musical works in his own right and collaborations with various forerunners who still stand is staggering. Nicely done, thanks for this.

basie, roach, mingus more influential than Monk? Please. They were fantastic musicians, but not as influential as Monk (who probably is even more important than Ellington on the developments on modern jazz). I’d say that though his greatness, i don’t think that i would put Mingus on a list of the more influential musicians. And Benny Goodman?! Jesus Christ what does he invented? A list of the most influential jazz musicians with benny goodman and without lester young, charlie christian, kenny clarke, wayne shorter, jimmy blanton, bill evans, ornette coleman (where’s coleman!) is not serious.

thanks for the list, i was trying to remember some of the great pieces of music that were played for me with double bass, cello and this was a great reminder.
