Pink Floyd was (and is still today) one of the most influential bands out there. They have influenced music genres from contemporary to progressive rock. Floyd was innovative with their music and helped create a new progressive space rock feel. With elaborate art work on their album covers and live concerts that had floating pigs and lasers, Pink Floyd gave new meaning to the word psychedelic. A list of Top 10 Pink Floyd Songs has already done which resulted in a lot of hurt for missing songs, so without further ado, here is an additional 10 Pink Floyd songs.
Repeated within this amazing song are lyrics from “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, which is a song from the musical Carousel. It is from a recording of Liverpool fans signing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at a soccer match.
What is interesting about this song is the rumor that there is a subliminal message within the song itself. It is supposed to be a different version of the Lord’s Prayer: “The Lord is my shepherd, He converteth me to lamb cutlets….” (I have not been able to confirm this even when I listen to the song myself, although I would love to hear it.)
Although this song is making fun of money, Pink Floyd sold over 34 million copies of this album. This was written by Waters, but sung by Gilmore. In the 2006 Dark Side of the Moon tour, Roger Waters sang all the songs from the album but “Money” due to this.
Favorite line from this song: “The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think. Oh by the way, which one’s Pink?” That line was asked by many people to the band throughout Pink Floyd’s music career. This song goes to show how far corporations and agencies will go to exploit their clients, especially with the phrases like “You’re gonna go far” and “Riding the Gravy Train”.
What better name to give to the rift between Syd Barrett and Roger Waters then the name of this song. Many believe the first part of this song is targeted to Barrett and the second part about Waters. Clearly, it was about the miscommunication that occurred between them.
Gilmour was quoted in saying “‘Learning to Fly’ is about breaking free and the actual mechanics of learning to fly an airplane.” This was true since he would go on to get his pilot’s license, despite the rumor that he was terrified of flying.
To many, this song is what started the space rock genre. It also dealt with the ‘space race’ between countries to gain control of outer space. Pink Floyd’s philosophical powers at work.
(Two for the price of one.) As with the album The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon had songs that played and flowed into one another, creating a ‘one long song’ feel. By themselves, Brain Damage and Eclipse are excellent pieces of music, but are better played together as they compliment each other.
As with “Have a Cigar”, this song is about the ‘money-making machine’ that is the music industry. With clever lyrics such as “What did you dream, it’s alright we told you what to dream”, this song points at the industry’s lust for money rather than establishing talent. This was a bone of contention with not only Pink Floyd, but most of the artists of those days.
“Time” is an all time classic and deserving of the number one slot (based on the many comments from the first list). This song is largely based on the affect of life passing by and chances that are not seized along the way. All 4 members were given credit for writing this song. The intro of clocks chiming was a concept by engineer Alan Parsons who was attempting to introduce a new ‘quadraphonic sound system’. However, the band decided to use it for the opening of the song instead, with much more powerful results.
That’s right, the entire album. How can anyone just pick one? Whether you believe it’s the best of the best and has no equal or you feel that it’s overrated and overplayed, “The Wall” is easily the most recognized Pink Floyd album. With such songs as “Comfortably Numb”, “Run Like Hell”, “Hey You”, “In the Flesh” and “Another Brick in the Wall” this album had more notoriety than any other and can be considered as the number one album of Pink Floyd’s expansive musical legacy.
Fun Fact: Did you know if you play the album for Dark Side of the Moon (started at the 3rd MGM lions roar) it runs with the Wizard of Oz?
Notable admissions: I can’t fit them all in, but in order to keep to a top 10 list, these songs were regrettably cut: Dogs of War, One of These Days, The Great Gig in the Sky, See Emily Play and Interstellar Overdrive

@Scratch (60): I’ll back that claim.
@ianz09 (59): My experience is a 50/50 split between published and unpublished – my last one appeared three months after submission. I’d rather have a list printed 12 months later than not at all – so here’s hoping my Incredible Christmas Gifts list makes it next time around.
See you guys tomorrow.
@Lifeschool (62): Then there is still hope! I just make sure not to hold out too much hope do to the pattern I have witnessed. It’s been several months since I submitted 13 Masked Bands, and my fingers have been uncrossed for awhile! I understand that JF can’t publish everything everyone submits, so I just shake it off if it turns out not to be very timely. If he ever has an urge to publish them, he’s got them, so for know I’ll just read everyone else’s
@Shifty (55): the Grammys are complete garbage.
@nicoleredz3 (58): I absolutely agree on your stance with the Grammy Awards being complete garbage!
Case in point:

@ianz09 (59): Maggsy Waggsy… Can we, like, make that a thing?
You REALLY don’t like me very much, do you?
“astraya
Smoke on the Water?
Stairway to Heaven?”
Hahaha WHAT?
I’m disappointed to see Money so low on the list, but it’s a list dedicated to Pink Floyd, how can I complain?
“Pink Floyd is good, but still the most over rated band ever.”
STFU and GTFO.
In my opinion, Pink Floyd doesn’t have one bad song (disregarding A Momentary Lapse of Reason – many not so great songs on there), but I’m pretty bummed so see this list. Pink Floyd is amazing and there are SO many options for this list and unfortunately some less-awesome songs were chosen.
@ianz09 (61):
Thank you, and on behalf of all good-hearted Canadians, I apologize for the export of Nickelback and the hours and hours of wasted radio programming that they are responsible for.
Awesome list. Pink Floyd is the greatest band that ever existed. I own their all of their albums on vinyl, CD and on itunes. I’ve seen them in concert, and the were phenomenal. They have inspired me most as a musician, and I listen to them nearly every day.

@Scratch (66): Apology accepted. We in turn extend our plea for forgiveness from the entire world for the likes of Britney Spears.
@Maggot (64): Don’t lie, Maggsy, you laughed at least a little through your cringing…
@myndela (68): Well said!
Here is another lesser known gem from Obscured by Clouds – Childhood’s End
@Scratch (60): You know I think your right. Pink Floyd can be the number 2 most over rated band.
@myndela (68): This is exactly what I’m talking about
@Maggot (64): “The flute is a heavy, metal instrument!” – godda love it.
@ianz09 (69): I gladly accept your apology for Britney Spears. Gladly! If you ever come across Lady Ga Ga; I’m sorry it came to THIS, and I hope you will remain similarly forever benevolent.
@Maggot (51):
“Now that I have, I feel kind of empty inside.”
Would that be due to “enema” effect?
Oouchan thank you for stepping up to bat for the Pink Floyd.
Tried to comment yesterday, but the computer didn’t want to cooperate.
I love the band, the music, the hype, the myth and the fact.
Good to see that they still hold up after all these years.
I wanted to wait to comment til most people faded out. The music of Pink Floyd is very personal to me and I need to keep that private. Their music speaks to my heart and breathes through my soul. So much of my identity and life experiences can be found in their music. Its an intensely personal relationship. I know how that sounds. But thats how I feel. In many ways, their words and music have given my life, and the troubles I have endured and overcome, validity and vindication. Their music allowed me to feel the deep dark horrible secrets and cruel pain that is life and know I wasnt the only one in the world who could feel that way. If it wasnt for their music, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Healed.
Syd Barrett is the greatest of all Pink Floydians. Band should have stopped after Piper, then formed some other group.
trmos(77) I have that on vinyl. I love most of “the madcap laughs.” I think “jugband blues” is so emotional and heartwrenching. Most people dont get it.
And what exactly is a dream?
And what exactly is a joke…?
@bythewaywhichonespink (76): That is almost exactly how I feel when I listen to Floyd. No matter what is happening in my life, to have them with me, to be the support I need is what keeps me going. You summed it up nicely.
Are you serious? That is what they are, my support.
Are we odd or normal? Or does it matter.
You just became my sister.
All hail the Floyd!! Great List!!
@Maggot (64):
I’m like WOW…
The whole DSOTM and Wizard of Oz thing is crap. I have seen many people try (and tried myself) and never seen anything other than a few neat coincidences. After all why would the band synch an album with a movie when the movie is much longer than the movie.
However, I have confirmed on multiple viewings that the song “Echoes” off of the Meddle album synchs up perfectly with the “3rd act” of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. It works best if you have the movie on VHS as the newer DVD versions seems be be a little bit edited. Directions on how to do the synch are at this URL http://www.pinkfloydonline.com/echoes2001_setup.html .
Apparently, the reason for this is that Pink Floyd was originally planned/hired to do some of the musical score for the movie at the request of Stanley Kubrick. However, the studio didn’t like the image of Floyd (drugs, hippies, etc.) and nixed the idea. I guess Floyd had already written the song and decided to put it on their album. I, for one, think that the music of Pink Floyd far surpasses the music that accompanied the third act of the movie in it’s released form and that this makes for a much better movie.
jhenninger (83) “…when the movie is much longer than the movie.”
Really?
#83 jhenninger is right. The Wizard of Oz synch is terrible and makes no sense. Any die hard fan knows about the 2001 synch and would never have put a fun fact about the Wizard of Oz on their list. No offense, just stating how true fans think
I tried to synch Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wizard Of Oz. It worked about as well a synching Abbey Road with The Godfather.
@bythewaywhichonespink (84): Sorry, I meant “when the movie is much longer than the song” since the movie is over 100 minutes and DSOTM is only 42 minutes.
However, the third act of 2001 and the song Echoes are almost exactly the same length (within a second or two).
Anyone remember the disco version of “Have a Cigar” that was released in 1978? Weirdest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the band, but it popped on when they changed the formatting of one of my favorite radio stations in Chicago, WDAI (no longer exists).
My rant about music:
When I blast my rather mainstream pop or, some classical or something not classic rock, people quickly jump at the chance to point out that I dont know “real music” like “pink floyd, the Beatles” blah blah. After hearing every song on this list, I know I wasnt missing out on anything. I am stunned how classic rock fans, unlike any other music fans, are the first to point out how their genre is superior to all others.
I find it rather boring, repetitive and… well it doesnt make me feel good, which to me is the purpose of music (to me I emphasize again).
maximuz04 (89) I think thats cool. What do you like? Im always looking for something fresh. Just cuz I breathe Pink Floyd doesnt mean Im not receptive to what ever else is out there.
In PF’s Sheep, the alternately worded Lord’s Prayer is voiced by the electronic-sounding guitar. If you listen to this portion of Sheep, you will hear the lyrics that are found on the record’s sleeve.
There was no rift between Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. The rift was between Waters and David Gilmore. Get it right, smacky.
You’ve got it about half right. Everything Floyd did after Animals was garbage, bar the odd track. You should probably have included some live performances; the version of ‘Echoes’ on the ‘Cruel But Fair’ bootleg is superior to the studio.
Oh, and Money’s by far and away the poorest song you could’ve chosen from DSOTM.
where the ***** is comfortably numb
Everything about Pink Floyd is amazing. Absolutely amazing. I'm thrilled to see some of the best on this list.
Good list, I like the progressive side of Pink Floyd.

Wish you were here is probably the most well-known and acclaimed song by Pink Floyd. Should've made the list imo.
Pink Floyd are beasts !!
Box Jellys
Lost for words is also a very good option for top 10 songs i think, it mustn’t be excluded..
How is “Astronomy Domine” about the space race? It’s just Syd Barrett reciting names of planets and constellations from an astronomy textbook!
Comfortably Numb is absent? Surely in the top 10
This is the playlist on God’s ipod.
no top 10 list is complete without comfortably numb….
but my fav song is coming back to life!!!
Awesome List.

what about Childhoods End?
Sheep is a great song, but to single it out, instead of Dogs as the most important song from not only Animals but Floyd’s entire career is a giant mistake in my eyes. Dogs. Mind blowing. Lyrically, musically, everything: it’s set way apart in my mind from nearly anything Floyd ever did. First time Waters really dared to cut to the quick of the human condition, and first time Gilmore ever dared to fully follow him where he was going. If you ever wanted proof that Roger and David used to be on the same page, it’s all here in Dogs.
I dont disagree with this article.
What a truly fun article!!
That was very informational post!
Wonderful post!!
What a frankly incredible writing!!
Cool list, like the choices, especially Fearless because I think more people should know about meddle, it’s really a piece of art.
