The definition of an empire is: when a single entity has supreme rule and power over a vast area of territory, which consists of peoples of different ethnicity and nationality. This list is based on the influence, longevity and power of the various empires, and, as you will see, it contains at least one or two entries that may strike some as controversial. My one requirement for this list is that the empire must have been ruled – for at least a majority of the time – by an emperor or king. This excludes modern so-called empires such as the United States and Soviet Union. The entries here are listed roughly by influence and size.

At the height of its power (16th–17th century), the Ottoman Empire spanned three continents, controlling much of Southeastern Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. It contained 29 provinces and numerous vassal states, some of which were later absorbed into the empire, while others were granted various types of autonomy during the course of centuries. The empire was at the center of interactions between the Eastern and Western worlds for six centuries. With Constantinople as its capital city, and vast control of lands around the eastern Mediterranean during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent (ruled 1520 to 1566), the Ottoman Empire was, in many respects, an Islamic successor to the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire.

The Umayyad Caliphate was the second of the four Islamic caliphates (systems of governance), established after the death of Mohammed. It was ruled by the Umayyad dynasty, whose name derives from Umayya ibn Abd Shams, the great-grandfather of the first Umayyad caliph. Although the Umayyad family originally came from the city of Mecca, Damascus was the capital of their Caliphate. Eventually, it would cover more than five million square miles, making it the largest empire the world had yet seen, and the fifth largest contiguous empire ever to exist. The Umayyads established the largest Arab-Muslim state in history. From the time of Mohammed until 1924, successive and contemporary caliphates were held by various dynasties – the last being the Ottoman Empire (above).

Babylonian, Akkadians, Assyrians, Sumerians, Hitites, Bactrians, Scythians, Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Egyptians, Ethiopians… Before the Romans, there were the Persians. They basically unified the whole of Central Asia which consisted of a lot of different cultures, kingdoms, empires and tribes. It was the largest empire in ancient history. At the height of its power, the empire encompassed approximately 8 million km2. The empire was forged by Cyrus the Great, and spanned three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe.

The Byzantine Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire, was the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages, centered on the capital of Constantinople, and ruled by emperors in direct succession to the ancient Roman emperors. It was called the Roman Empire, and also Romania. During its existence, of over a thousand years, the Empire remained one of the most powerful economic, cultural and military forces in Europe, despite setbacks and territorial losses, especially during the Roman–Persian and Byzantine–Arab Wars. The Empire received a mortal blow in 1204 by the Fourth Crusade, when it was dissolved and divided into competing Byzantine Greek and Latin realms. Despite the eventual recovery of Constantinople and re-establishment of the Empire in 1261, under the Palaiologan emperors, successive civil wars in the fourteenth century further sapped the Empire’s strength.

During the Chinese period of warring states, the whole of China was embroiled in a civil war as the different kingdoms within it battled it out with each other in the quest for supremacy. In the end, the Qin State won, and gobbled up the whole of China, with 40 million people under it’s control. The Qin Dynasty didn’t last long, and soon it went to the Han, which eventually controlled China for close to 400 years. The period of the Han Dynasty is considered a golden age in Chinese history in terms of scientific achievement, technological advance, economic, cultural and political stability. Even to this day, most Chinese people refer to themselves as the Han people. Today, the “Han people” is considered the largest single ethnic group in the world.

At it’s greatest extent, the British empire was known as the largest empire in history, as it covered more than 13,000,000 square miles, which is approximately a quarter of the Earth’s total land area, and controlled more than 500 million people – again a quarter of the world’s population. As a result, the legacy it imprinted on these conquered lands is tremendous in terms of political reform, cultural exchanges and way of life. The English language, which it spread, is the second most-widely spoken language in the world today, and many linguistics agree that English is the defacto standard language of the world. The British empire is definitely one of the most influential empires ever to have existed in human history.

During the middle ages, they were considered the “superpower” of their time. At it’s height, the Holy Roman Empire consisted of eastern France, all of Germany, northern Italy and parts of western Poland. Despite being relatively small in terms of Empires, its influence on the history of central Europe is still felt today. Incredibly the Empire lasted from the early middle ages ages to the 19th century. The Empire was formally dissolved on 6 August 1806 when the last Holy Roman Emperor, Francis II (later Francis I of Austria), abdicated following a military defeat by the French under Napoleon. Upon its collapse, the following nations emerged: Switzerland, Holland, the Austrian Empire, Belgium, the Prussian Empire, Principality of Liechtenstein, Confederation of the Rhine and the first French Empire.

The Russian Empire was a state that existed from 1721 until the Russian Revolution of 1917. It was the successor to the Tsardom of Russia, and the predecessor of the Soviet Union. It was the second largest contiguous empire in world history, surpassed only by the Mongol Empire, and the third largest empire behind the British Empire and the Mongol Empire. At one point in 1866, it stretched from eastern Europe, across Asia, and into North America.

It all started when Temujin (who was later known as Genghis Khan), vowed in his youth to bring the world to his feet. He almost did. His first act was unifying the scattered Mongolian tribes. Then he set his sight on China, and the rest is history. From Vietnam to Hungary, the Mongol Empire is the largest contiguous empire in the history of mankind. Unfortunately for them, their empire was too big to be controlled, and there was no unity among the different cultures. The Mongols were fearless and ruthless fighters, but had little experience in administration. The image of the mongols as a brutal and savage people is renowned through history.

At first they were ruled by divine kings, then they became a republic (perhaps their greatest period) before finally becoming an empire. How a group of farmers, who started off fending wolves to protect their livestock, eventually became the greatest empire in all history is the stuff of legends. Coupled with an excellent military and administrative system, the Roman Empire, or rather ancient Rome, is also one of the longest-lasting. Counting from its founding to the fall of the Byzantine empire, ancient Rome lasted for a whopping 2,214 years!
Ancient Rome contributed greatly to the development of law, war, art, literature, architecture, technology, religion and language in the Western world. In fact many historians consider the Roman Empire to be a perfect empire – influential, fair, long-lasting, big, well defended and economically advanced. The influence of the Roman Empire is felt to this day, if for no other reason than the influence on the Catholic Church, which took much of its administrative nous and pageantry from it.

AND SPANISH EMPIRE? WTF?
british empire was the best
The Greatest Empire was and is the British Empire/Commonwealth. I say ‘is’ because the British Empire has in fact never been greater.
The Industrial Revolution started in the factories of Manchester. First it was England and then, country by country, industrialisation spread and it created an entire new world, an almost globally British world. But the British Empire was not like any seen before, for it was democratic.
As English increasingly becomes the global language, and as the Westminster-style of parliamentary democracy spreads across the world, so to does the British Empire continue to grow and British culture dominate over ‘traditional cultures’. England was the first country to become British but eventually almost all of the world will become British, for denouncing Britishness means de-industrialisation.
The ultimate question then becomes: what comes after industrialisation and parliamentary democracy? The greatest answer yet to that was with communism and the Soviet Union, but with the fall of the Berlin Wall that is a threat in decline. Perhaps a fundamental islamic caliphate? What do you think? What will kickstart the next ‘global empire’?
LOL “Like any other seen before it was democratic”
You better study you’re history, Athens was the first city to have democracy, in ANCIENT times, and here England was thinking it was something knew…
And the people that took industrialism to the extreme were the Americans, (not modern day though) the french were more industrial than England.
Mongol empire have been killed by Vietnamese people. ^_^
where the hell is the vijayanagara empire or mughal empire of india ? at least one of them deserves a mention here. it is a known fact that somewhere between the 16 th and 18th century the indian and chinese economy constituted half of the worlds wealth. the europeans fought against each other (the carnatic wars for example) to trade in india. it is well known that europe was in the dark ages with plague and the crusades in the middle ages. this resulted in europeans desperately searching for what they called heaven that is india.
america was accidentally found by columbus who was looking for india. the first universities in the world came up in india ( nalanda , vikramshila and odanthapura ) oxford came up after 200 years since these universities declined due to various circumstances including the islamic invasions .
india sold sandalwood , diamonds and spices to the world . the europeans would fight for pepper. india was the only country with diamonds and precious stones before south africa .
travellers from all around the world ( greece , china …etc) were spellbounded by great cities like hampi and the riches. they even joked that the kids in india played with diamonds.
the nizam of hyderabad (19 th century) , india osman ali is known as the richest man ever.
this year a temple in trivandrum , kerala , india opened its ancient treasure vaults and it is now the richest place of worship in the world with treasures worth 26.76 billion us dollars (sree padmanabhaswamy temple) .
now this temple belonged to one of the tiniest almost unknown kingdom . imagine the wealth of the biggest empires of india from the mauryans to the mughals and marathas.
india bacame poor only inthe 19 th century , thanks to the britishers.
as far as the way of life is concerned . yes its true that india doing that great when the britishers arrived . thet is because of the islamic invasions that started in the 10 th century . before that india was a comparatively peaceful land . even the wars had rules . indians had never heard of pillaging and burning of cities , raping of women after a battle or unnecessary killing.
the muslims wre the first to use brutal force in a way the indians never heard of.
the society was peaceful & educated. and we definitely did not live like cavemens. india was after all one of the first civilizations of the world. its cities like harappa , mohenjodaro , indraprastha , pataliputra were the most well planned cities ever. it can put todays cities to shame. read the town planning of harappa . the worlds most pure and the only perfect language was born in india (SANSKRIT) which means refined . it along with latin is the only perfect language. unlike english which is a well known to be a faulty language.
india is the land where buddhism ,hinduism , sikkhism , jainism religions originated. great men like swami vivekananda , buddha, gandhiji, mahavira lived here. india is the mother of all great things like mathematics, art (painting , music), philosphy , literature , etc.it was ALBERT EINSTEIN and many other great western minds that said this and not me. they said the world owes it to india for all this knowledge .
the number zero originated in india. and many such things.
i do agree india today is a third world country with illetracy , poverty , crime but for no fault of us . once again thank the brits.
Well of course this is my opinion, but even though the Greeks were not an empire, but instead a group of city states, they held the greatest minds of all times. They were philosphers, playwrights, scientists, mathmaticians, WRITERS, cultural revolutioners, and dreamers. But they were not an empire, so they can’t be considered, although the Han the home of Confucious can and i do not think that they deserve number 6. When the Roman empire fell they could not get back up, they tried but they soon collapsed again, if it wasn’t for the Byzantines there culture probably would have never been perserved. But the Han however over many years did gain back power and they ruled once again. Also how did the Ummayad even make it on the list, they took over the Islam community without even knowing anything about Muhammad, they ruled for less than a hundred years before they were were corrupted by the Shi’ates who were loyal to the true caliphate which were the relative of Muhammad. The Abassid perserved the culture of Islam and they translated and kept the precious work of the Greeks. Without them the works of Aristotle, Socrates, Ctesius, Plato, as well as the Playwright may have not ever been known. What kind of world would we live in if there were no Greeks? It makes one wonder.
You should scroll to the bottom (mine didn’t get moved to most recent cause i live in different time zone, but i got so angry that he didn’t add HELLENIC Empire, i made a 3 paragraph ranting about it, but in my opinion it was a empire because when Philip & Alexander and all the hellenic soldiers had defeated Persia, Eygept and many other countires, was it Athens that conquered? whas it Macedonia?Sparta? It was the Hellenas, i think that’s like a union.
Greece is the name turks gave the hellenics…

Holy Roman Empire in at 3… WTF!!! The British Empire and the Roman Empire are the two greatest Empires ever. The British Empire was he largest empire of all time, which at its height in 1922 was even bigger than the greatest extent of the Mongol Empire. The British Empire has left a lasting legacy on every single continent with its language, the de facto language of the world, and was the first major power to outlaw slavery within its borders. The Roman Empire on the other hand was THE definitive power of the Ancient World, and was the longest lasting nation state in history, at well of 2000 years if you count the Byzantine Empire (which is a name given to it by Historians; the people who actually lived in it never stopped calling it the Roman Empire). It has left an enormous cultural legacy in their technological innovations and their language, which forms the basis for many languages across the world. I cannot choose between the two personally and I think that if anything they should hold joint top. Not until man conquers the stars shall we see two such great powers again
I wonder if someone like Chinese or Indian, or some other non-westerner had asked to rank the empires, how would the list look? Who would be at the top?
this list is a crap made by some white ass
“1st Rom, 2nd Mongol” this list is wrong. Mongolian Empire is most most most biggest empire of human history.
Definition of Empire: An extensive group of states or countries of various ethnicities under a single supreme authority, an emperor, empress or dynasty.
Their span is defined by: The point of expansion until the point of major territorial loss or division, or declaration of dissolution.
Rome itself was founded according to legend in 753 BC, it later became a republic in 509 BC. Rome conquers all of Italy in 264 BC. However, the Roman Empire wasn’t founded until Emperor Augustus 31 BC ~ 14 AD. Previously to this it was still a Republic, even though it had expanded into much of Europe and the Mediterranean. This empire is ruled until 395 AD, after the death of Theodosius, when it permanently split into two completely new and separate empires;
The Western Roman Empire, which continued losing territory to the Goths until the emperor was dethroned in 476 AD.
And The Eastern Roman Empire which is also known as the Byzantine Empire, which by 563 AD had reconquered much of the territory lost by the fall of the Western Roman Empire. However, over the next 200 years it would decline from conquests by the Avars, Persians, Lombards & Arabs.
The Western Empire was reborn in 756 AD by Pepin and then ruled by his son, Charles the Great (Charlemagne), as The Holy Roman Empire, until his death in 814 AD. The empire continued in decline until its end circa 924 AD.
The conquest of Italy in 962 by Otto I, King of Germany forced the Pope to crown him emperor, thus reviving the Western Roman Empire as the 2nd Holy Roman Empire.
The Byzantium Empire also recovered much of it’s lost territory from 960 ~ 1040 AD under the generals Nicephorus II Phocas, & John I Tzimisces who became the empires rulers.
After 1040 AD the Byzantine Empire started falling apart. The 2nd Holy Roman Empire and other papal states under instruction from the Pope began the First Crusade in 1097 AD, which recaptured the Byzantine Empire under the 2nd Holy Roman Empire’s control. Territory was then successively lost and won until the Fourth Crusade in 1204 AD where the crusaders replaced the Byzantine Empire completely by placing themselves on the throne of Constantinople.
From 1183 til 1282 AD the conquered territories of the 2nd Holy Roman Empire declared independence, until the empire ceased to exist.
In effect the “Roman Empire” was in fact five separate empires; The Roman Empire (31 BC ~ 395 AD), The Western Roman Empire (395 ~ 476 AD), Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantine Empire (ruled by the Byzantines, 395 ~ 1204 AD), the Holy Roman Empire (ruled by the French, 756 ~ 924 AD), & the 2nd Holy Roman Empire (ruled by the Germans, 962 ~ 1282 AD).
The longest spaning empire being the Byzantine Empire 809 years, which itself could be broken down into multiple smaller empires over the history of its conquests, declines & various rulers.
The Greatest Impire was the Calaphite. from China to Saudi arabia, France to Mecca. Africa to Yeman.
Where is the Macedonian empire in your order
thanks advance
I think this list is not complete because it doesn’t include Mauryan Empire THE GRETEST OF ALL TIME
STOP ARGUING ABOUT EMPIRES
AND GET A LIFE
You seem to have forgotten the first global empire in the history of mankind: the Spanish Empire between 1492 and 1898. As a result of it, over 500 million people speak Spanish globally today, and the Catholic religion spreads all over the world.
I would have thought that because it was the first global empire (with territories in every continent) it should have been at number 1. But its not even being in the top 10 devalues this list to a great extent.
Lets solve this matter once and for all, I am going to list all the factors that make an Empire great and then list the Empires with the strongest of these factors. This is my conclusive point in this debate and after listing all the factors I will conclude who the greatest were.
So the Factors that make an Empire Great are:
-Strong Influence on the Modern World
-Strong Domination over International Relation Relations
-Strong Military
-Strong Economic Power
-Strong Industrial or Agricultural Power
-Strongest trade System
-Size
-Life Span
-Percentage of World Population
-Population of the Empire
So the Greatest Empire in these factors are:
-Strongest Influence on the Modern World: Britain or Rome more likely Britain as Rome’s technology was abandoned from 300-1000 years after their empire was invaded by Attila the Hun.
-Strongest Domination over International Relations: Britain
-Strongest Military: Rome or Britain – Both large, successful, powerful, well trained and well organised except the difference being the Romans focused on Land Power and the British focused on Naval Power. But unlike Britain the Romans were conquered by their enemies. So in conclusion their I would say Britain.
-Strongest Economic Power: Britain
-Strongest Industrial or Agricultural Power: Britain – Dominated 40% of Total World GDP
-Strongest Trade System: Britain followed by the Mongols.
-Size: Britain – Owned 25% of World Land Mass (33.7 million square Kilometres) and also her navy owned all the world’s oceans so that taken into account and the fact Britain dominated most of the world economy; Britain ruled the world.
-Life Span: Romans or Egyptians with about 600-1000 years. (Fact: Britain’s empire lasted longer than the Mongols)
-Percentage of World Population: Persian Empire with 45-50% of the World Population
-Largest Population within an Empire: Britain with 428 million people (25% of the World Population)
Out of the 10 categories that would define the Greatest Empire, Britain dominated 8 of them proving that in conclusion Britain was the Greatest Empire the world has ever seen.
There’s a reason we’re called Great Britain.
Samuel,
I like your criteria and I soley agree that the British Empire should be ranked higher than number 5 but second to the Romans.
The Romans were the big boys without any disputes from 55BC to at least 330 AD. In terms of economic , military and cultural power it had no equals during this time as its citizens to enjoyed running water within their homes, and its engineering and education and etertainment industry was not rivaled until the end of the Dark to Middle ages.
Although the British Empire and influence spread around the globe this was due to the tehnology thus it will be unfair to compare territory and influence in this manner.
However, Britians battle for world mastery to the same extend of the Romans could be said to commence prematurely in 1763 at the earliest burt undoubtely from 1815 to 1939. This will equate to less than 200 years of world mastery while the Romans were the Masters of their known world for 400 years.
It is due to this reason why i classify the Roman empire as the greatest in the world followed by the British
Your thoughts?
macedonia was a part of ancient greece dummy
hehe im from mongolia and why mongolian emperor is second? this is wrong
this is retarded.. you clearly state britian as the largest empire in history yet you put it at number 5… JUST WOW LOL.
I will have to agree. I ranked them second below the Romans
I am very surprised that you only ranked the British empire only number five on your list considering as you correctly stated it was not only the largest empire in the world but the sole economic power in 19th century. At its height the British were masters of the seas and thus trade, commerce, founders of industrialism and their overall influence in world affairs is only second to the Romans in history.
I don’t believe its the greatest of all time as in my view the Roman empire is the benchmark that all empires are measured but the British empire has a very strong case for the second greatest in history
Also do my amazement I do not know how the Spanish empire missed your list as this was the world’s first true global empire (first empire to have territories in all five continents), Europe’s greatest military power from 1503 to 1642 and the worlds from 1580 to 1642.
Additionally, the Spanish empire employed or produced the great explorers and navigators of their age – first to navigate the globe and opened all the major trade routes of its time. The Spanish can take credit for the first global currency spreading from the Americas including the British colonies in the North, Asia and Europe.
The greatest empires in terms of military and economic power, change agent, legacy, level of influence all measured by quality and time opinion are as follows:
1. Roman
2. British
3. Spanish
4. Persian
5. Ottoman
6. Mongol empire
7. Umayyad Caliphate
8. Egyptian
9. French
10. Byzantine
Portugal existed way before Spain and England we were the first global empire of the world.
We discovered the world way before anyone of those contries.
Europe, Africa, America, Asia etc…
The first and last global empire 1414-1999.
You said that “English is the second most widely-spoken language in the world” – this is wrong. English is THE most widely-spoken language in the world. Mandarin is spoken by more native people as a first language but it is not widely spoken outside of China.
I do believe all of the ideas you’ve presented on your post. They are very convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are very short for novices. May you please lengthen them a bit from subsequent time? Thanks for the post.
Nice post. I was checking constantly this blog and I’m impressed! Very helpful information specially the last part
I care for such information a lot. I was seeking this certain information for a very long time. Thank you and good luck.
lol i think Numper “1″ Should be Egypt -The old Egyptian The “Pharaoh”s egyptian empire was the oldest -Longest-Greatest First people as i know how reach every thing early medic, science, technology,Buliding,Astronomy, drawing,Implants, first people who Think about gods and worship ,first country who make army to portect Its borders-other empires such Atlnts was giving egypt Abscess every year to portect it much countrys who live next egypt was giving Abscess to help them if some one attack them,They Were The Greatest Army in the whole World also first peopel who Bulid Ships to To use it to travel&Trade u people Should Read about The Egyptian Civilization top and still Numper “1″Always nothing came or will come like “pharaoh”
You have no idea what your talking about, the holy roman empire was a group of scattered states that would even back each other up during a war.
British is the most widely spoken language (and the third largest language) on the planet and anyone who doesn’t put them as number 1 is a dumbass (especially when they put the russian empire (whose people all hated their brutal overlords and whose kings focused on conquering arctic location most of which didn’t even have governments before) and the holy roman empire afterwards.)
Come on, Britain was the first superpower and should have been first on the list.
the persian empire should be in the top 3 it was way better than the han dynasty, the byzantines and …
This is bull*****. The Roman Empire lasted 504 years NOT 2,214. What a predictable joke of an article this is.
Nice list, but the only missing empires on this list are those which we do not much about. We have a vast history from Europe and Asia, but little is known about Africa and America. For example, we know that great cities were built by the Mayas and Incas, but very little is known as to how much control they had over the rest of the continent and their populations before European colonist came into the picture. Nevertheless I do agree with the list that has been presented, making a strong case to substitute one of these lesser empires like the Umayyad Caliphate with the Ancient Greek Empire started by Alexander the Great.
Ey guys, where is the Spanish Empire which ruled during 2 centuries over the world? (started with the discovery of America)
I’ve read a few just right stuff here. Definitely price bookmarking for revisiting. I surprise how a lot effort you put to create this type of fantastic informative site.
Your definition of power is wrong as it can describe an empire, a kingdom or a dictatorship. This makes it so that the British are not actually an empire they were always either a kingdom or a republic. Pay more attention in world history class people
I was recommended this web site via my cousin. I’m no longer certain whether or not this submit is written through him as nobody else recognise such precise about my problem. You are incredible! Thank you!
what is means of great empire between now time and then time past hitory.
What about the Greek empire, and the Carthaginian Empire?
Where is the portuguese empire?
The first and last global empire of history? 1415-1999?
Epic facepalm.
British Empire? Try English Empire, we started the whole glorious adventure by conquering our closest neighbours and press ganging them into joining our escapades as subjugated people. Still do, idiots. As for our old friends from America constantly attempting to belittle our fine nation it is as clear as day you still have an inferiority complex that you havn’t dealt with. The simple fact is that if the world ended tomorrow your contribution would be a mere footnote on the last page of the history of the world. You have a wonderful future but so far your contribution has been lacking regarding anything truly significant and we can all tell how much you wish to change that. Good luck the 21st century is your stage…. fingers crossed the Iranians don’t nuke you before you fulfill your potential.
Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire were the same thing. The Byzantime Empire was simply the Eastern half of the Roman Empire that survived the fall of the Western Empire in 476 AD. The Byzantine Emperors always considered themselves to be the Emperors of Rome and made strenuous efforts to recover Italy. The Roman Empre thus didnt end in 476 but in 1453, adding another 1000 years to its history.
They were rivals though, and they weren’t the same thing
Holy Roman=Catholic
Byzantine=Greek Orthodox
…Influence and size, gee the Greeks must have not influenced anybody according to this list, even thought almost everything we have today was influenced by the Greeks, Medicine, Democracy, Science, seriously i can’t believe you put ROMANS on the top of that list, they were basically thieves that stole all the gods, philosophies, and everything from Greece. And you put the Persian empire up there? This list isn’t even 1% correct. If freikorptrasher (the writer) had any clue of what he was doing, he would put it like this:
10:Byzantine Empire (was much more powerful than hole roman empire)
9:Feudal Japanese Empire
8:Roman Empire
7:Native Americans
6:Ottoman Empire
5:Spanish Empire
4:British Empire
3:Arab Empire (The Caliphate)
2.French Empire
1.Hellenic (Greek) Empire (Philip & Alexander)
Alexander & Philip united all the city states such as Sparta, Athens, Thebes…
They Stretched from Greece all the way to modern day Pakistan and also southern in Egypt.
They also influenced about everything in today’s culture:
Democracy:Was first founded in Athens.
Private School & Public School: Were both first founded in Sparta
Philosophies: Greece has risen the two greatest Philosophers of all time, Pluto & Aristotle
Poetry: Homer, the most amazing poet of all time.
Art: The Hellenas are famous for their art, Statues,Paintings, And even Temples.
Sports: The Hellenas created the Olympics, one of the most popular sporting events today.
These are all things that still affect us today, and there are many more…
Sorry, i meant to put down Mongol instead Ottoman, but ottoman empire was still big
Guys what are some of you smoking ??? THE LARGEST EMPIRE EVER IN HISTORY WAS THE BRITISH EMPIRE which had 33,700,000 km2 (13,012,000 sq mi), almost a quarter of the Earth’s total land area. THE SECOND LARGEST EMPIRE WAS THE MONGOL EMPIRE, ALSO WAS THE LARGEST CONTIGUOUS LAND EMPIRE IN HUMAN HISTORY ; It covered an area of 24,000,000 km2 (9,300,000 sq mi), 16% of the Earth’s total land area… I agree that United States of America is an Empire, not in the classical understanding, with a Monarch, but IT rules the world with its great army, naval, … satellites… CORPORATIONS, ENTERTAINMENT, HOLLYWOOD, VIDEO GAMES, SOCIAL NETWORKING (FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE, GOOGLE..)…. OH I FORGOT TO MENTION THE SECRET SERVICES, CIA, FBI… USA IS THE NUMBER ONE COUNTRY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, WHY NOT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD ?? BUT USA BRINGS DEMOCRACY (REPUBLIC SYSTEMS) TO THE WORLD SO ITS A GOOD THING FOR OPEN-MINDED PERSONS LIKE ME… Well, however, other countries are trying to share that greatness too, countries like CHINA (not a democracy, but aspires to become a economically and social “rival” of USA…) and should i remember you guys about the EUROPEAN UNION ?? … well, there are “modern empires” and there will always be at least an empire, until the end of humankind ! I’m glad at least the old times are gone, at least for the most part…
Where is Alexander the Great’s empire? I mean if it was mentioned in the Bible before it even happened I think it deserves to be on that top 10 list!
