let me intervene and disappoint for a second.

the story of james worson was a SHORT STORY, written by Ambrose Bierce called “an unfinished race”, a work of fiction. and the distance from Leamington Spa to Coventry is 9 miles not 20…

the story of Felicia Felix-Mentor that appears on this page is copy/pasted directly from a wikipedia page, however the “writer” of this blog-thing left out the last section of the wikipedia page which states;

“While gathering information for the book Tell My Horse, author Zora Neale Hurston encountered the supposed zombie and photographed her. However, Dr. Louis P. Mars had examined the woman and did not think her to actually be Felix-Mentor — his reasons for denying the identification include that Felix-Mentor had a permanent limp from a fractured leg whereas the Zombie, though initially brought in with a limp, healed over time and showed no evidence of a fracture in X-Rays.”

The “Gnome” is probably a fucking monkey… and the “SS Ourang Medan”, well it just didnt exist. there is no evidence of its construction, or any other kind of evidence. and ‘Gef’, part of the evidence provided by the Irving’s was his hair, which was proven to be their sheepdogs hair.

anything i didnt address here is just obviously made-up crap…

when i read this page i tried to immerse myself, but its pretty hard when i KNOW this story is totally bullshit…

I agree with most of those hypotheses. Some of these are very obviously hoaxes like 9, 5 and 1 but some are a bit harder to explain like the dogs jumping off the bridge. I really liked your explanation for number 10 because I struggled with that one a bit.

great list! however, the story of the disappearing runner is actually a short story by ambrose bierce titled, “an unfinished race”. the gnomes freak me out! my family comes from way up in the appalachian mountains of north carolina, and there’s a family story about gnome sightings. my great aunt cornelia saw tiny, naked men running down to the riverbank and tried to go after them, but her mother stopped her and told her that little men are dangerous.

A very enjoyable list but I was surprised no one else (that I have read) mentioned that number six was in fact a fictional short story, not something that was actually a myth prior to said story being printed. Really interesting stuff anyway.
