I love religious lists – especially those involving facts or debunkings. In memory of the very popular list on factlets people get wrong I have put this one together inspired by the same excellent source. Be sure to add your own factlets to the comments, and when you are done, check out the Top 10 Misconceptions About the Bible. This list also features a competition, so be sure to check out the bonus item.

Contrary to popular belief, Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden not because they ate the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but in order to prevent them from eating from the tree of life (both forbidden trees are in Genesis 2:9) which would have made them eternal. God doesn’t like competition! Here is the verse (Genesis 3:22-23): “And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now, therefore, lest perhaps he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. [23] And the Lord God sent him out of the paradise of pleasure, to till the earth from which he was taken.”

We all know the tale of Jonah and the whale… but how well do we know it? Well enough to know that he wasn’t eaten by a whale? It was no mammal that ate Jonah – it was a huge fish – though its type is not mentioned. Of course, I am presuming that everyone reading this list knows that a whale is not a fish.

Samson and Delilah is a famous story from the Old Testament which ends rather badly, as Samson’s long hair is cut short to destroy his strength. The common misconception is that Delilah was the one to give him the chop – a kind of ancient bobbit if you will. But in fact, it was Delilah’s servant who did it.

The “Rapture” is not in the Bible! Despite being believed by a large number of protestants (many of whom also believe that only that which is in the Bible can be true) it was actually invented in the 1600s by one Cotton Mather – otherwise famous for murdering women by strangling them to death (by hanging) in the Salem witch trials. The term in the Bible commonly mistranslated to the word “rapture” actually comes from the Greek ἁρπάζω (harpazo) which actually means “caught up” or “taken away” and it refers to one person only (Philip).

There weren’t three and they didn’t visit Jesus in a manger. The Bible gives neither the number of men (but does the number of gifts as three, which is probably where this misconception stems from). Additionally, Herod demanded the death of all boys under two, making it probable that Christ had been born up to two years prior. Also, the wise men visited Jesus when he lived in a house according to the Biblical account in Matthew 2:11.

The Bible does not condemn drinking alcohol (remember that Jesus’ first public miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding party), or gambling and betting. The closest it comes to the latter is to recommend against get rich quick schemes (Ecclesiastes 5:10) and loving money excessively. Be sure to remember that next time you are sipping your wine at the local casino. Addendum: “The Bible does NOT condemn the drinking of alcohol – that misconception is a holdover from Calvinistic and Purtanical Prtotestantism – which worked its way into Methodism etc; What the Bible DOES say is “Be not DRUNK of the fruit of the vine” – at the same time many gainsayers will claim that the water was turned into grape juice – but the original Gospels clearly use a word which translates from the original Greek as WINE a “fermented grape beverage”. [addendum courtesy of carra 23]. Traditionally drunk means “falling down drunk” – in other words, the loss of the will to control oneself.

“God helps those who help themselves” – a wise and good quote that everyone knows is from the Bible. But, in fact, it isn’t. It was a man, not a god who coined the well known (and overused) proverb. It was Benjamin Franklin in his Poor Richard’s almanac.

Another quote we all know from the Bible is “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Now ask yourself – do you know what God’s answer was to this question? You don’t – no one does because the Bible doesn’t tell us what He replied. If God were to have answered, we can presume it would have been in the affirmative if all of the other commands to look after our brothers in the New Testament are taken into consideration.

The Virgin Mary is not described in the Bible as having travelled to Bethlehem on a donkey. No mention is made at all in the gospels of the mode of transport used in the journey. The first mention of her riding a donkey comes from the non-Biblical Protoevangelium of James which you can read here. It was written around 150AD and is also one of the oldest works to describe Mary as a virgin both before and after the birth of Christ. The exact quote from the Protoevangelium is “And he [Joseph] saddled the ass, and set her upon it;”

This has been mentioned in passing in comments on previous lists but it definitely warrants a mention here. Unlike most of the misconceptions here which deal specifically with what the Bible says or doesn’t say, this one is a misconception about the translation of part of it. The Old Testament refers to Moses as having horns on his head after he went up the mountain to see God. This prompted Michaelangelo to sculpt him with the horns. Many people believe that this was due to a mistranslation of the description of Moses but, in fact, it isn’t. Moses really is described as being horned. And the reason for this? In Old Testament times, a person who was believed to have seen or been touched by God was described as having horns (or rays of light) coming from their head. It was an ancient symbol much like today’s gloriole.

[NOTE: The competition has now ended and the two winners of the beautiful Bible are: 23redleader and MrsBenLinus - congratulations!]
In honor of this list being about Biblical misconceptions and the fact that Christmas is almost one week away, we are having a competition. After the publication of tomorrow’s list I will choose two commenters at random to win a copy of the Haydock Bible – a stunning leather bound Bible which has a commentary alongside each verse giving interpretations from the early Christian fathers. It is my favorite edition of the Bible and it is an impressive size (11×9 inches). This book is valued at $118 USD and we will deliver to any country.

Interesting article. Thanks for bringing up The Rapture – many people fall for that one.
The reason why everyone gets these facts wrong is because we don't look in our bibles anymore. We just watch a movie or a tv special about it and believe every word of it.
theres another one about David and Goliath…i dont recall where i heard it….. but if i recall correctly, theres one version that says he slayed Goliath with a stone and sling while another one says he used a sword. weird. I forget the exact details but i'm sure a quick google search will clarify this
very racist site!!where are the lists about quran ?
I would add the misconception that the fruit that Adam and Eve got tempted by was an apple. Apple is never mentioned, just a forbidden fruit.
Jonah, and The Rapture have been my favourites for some time now. I always like to correct 'devout' Christians about their errors when they try to preach to me about the Bible.
p.s. if anyone is going to reply to this post, please dont make smarty comments about how Adam&Eve had Apple because IBM wasnt around yet..and dont point out to me that the Rapture was a hit song for Blondie in the early 80's…
The apple might be a result from the Latin translation of the bible – in Latin "malus" can mean both"evil" and "apple" . so the "tree of good and evil knowledge" could have been understood to be an apple tree.
I've heard that the "apple" is the fault of John Milton and his "Paradise Lost." Don't have a source for that. But even while I agree that Bible doesn't name the fruit, I doubt that Milton came up with the apple on his own.
"Apple" used to be commonly used to denote a fruit in general also. Hence the pineapple–a fruit with spines–spiney apple–pineapple. It could be in that sense that Milton used the word and the language has just changed between his time and ours.
Great list and gorgeous book. I’m going to have to get one now even if I don’t win. Are you aware of any bibles annotated by secular scholars?
Great list. I always enjoy finding out the truth behind misconceptions.
Thank you for this list. I am a Christian and I often get upset by other so called learned Christians who constantly misquote the Bible. I hope that this list will in a least a small way set some of them straight.
After reading the list, yes, some of these facts are coming back to me now. Haha.
None of this is fact. It's just folklore and fairytale just like any other religion. Don't say things are fact when there is no proof or evidence to back it up. The only "evidence" is a poorly written fairytale. The Bible.
The facts are related to what the bible says not historical events.
Exactly, the bible is fiction so what it says can't be fact.
Neat! Do you feel better now that you got that out? Stay hot guy…
I didn't know about #10, but I do know it was never determined what tempted them (i.e. a snake).
only posting to win!
Great list! Never knew about the horns!
I love these religious lists, my wife is very religious, and there is nothing more fun than going through each item in turn and seeing if she knows them or not. Usually after a poor showing, and her with a degree in religious studies, it's onto winding up the Minister with the odd emails.
My absolute favourite remains the one in Ezekiel about the sisters and the emissions of donkeys and the size of men down in Sudan, there is truly nothing new under the sun.
As for the competition, mememememememmeme, pleaaseeeeeeee,,,,,,,
Nice list…. sometimes I find the Bible is more full of fantasy than Harry Potter. Nice list on the occasion of Christmas.
It is amazing that religion is one of those topics that people really get worked up when, in fact, their knowledge is based on heresay. I'd be willing to bet that there is an extrememly small percentage of people that have actually read the Bible. All you have to do is read Genesis and you will be shocked at the stories it tells (incest, murder, etc.) —- There is some messed up sh*t in there! Yet, we all tip toe around what our beliefs are based on.
I agree, more people should read the bible. Its great if you can get around the way its written…although I wouldn't recommend it for the children as a bed time story
sweet list
I enjoyed number 10 the most
I have two brothers, and I can never figure out if I'm supposed to be their keeper or vice-versa.
Interesting list… Biblical history seems to be nothing more than one big game of phone tag. I'm sure that could be said for anything historical.
Good list, some I knew and some I didn't. I thought I would find some major misconceptions but these seem to be just little ones. Oh well, Merry Christmas all.
OK, I'll bite… count me in on the drawing for the Bible. Hmm, I really should start thinking about doing another list… I've only done one so far.
loving the list. had an idea about some things but horned moses was an eyeopener, also the giant fish. good stuff
Interesting list, even for those who are not prone to religious matters. Should give us some basis to counter fundamentalist christians' insidiousness ^_^
I agree with all this except for number 10. God only told Adam and Eve to not eat from the tree of the knoledge of good and evil, but He did not tell them to not eat from the tree of life. Catholic doctrine teaches that before Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they were totally without sin and that God actually commanded them to eat from the tree of life because it gave their bodies very good health and vigour and so, they would not have died at all. It did not make them as powerful as God.
He told them to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil though, because as Bishop Fulton Sheen said, men was not yet ready for such things and another source says that, even if men had not fallen, we would still have had God the Son become man, and consequently, the Blessed Virgin Mary would still have been the Mother of God and the most perfect of all creatures.
I hope I win.
Hmm….learned some interesting things
I am glad to see a war hasn't started on here. I loved the list.
I want that Bible. Another misconception, that Adam and Eve ate an apple. It just says fruit, we have no idea what kind.
Another quality list. I was at a pub quiz a year back and one of the questions was "In the Bible, who cut Samson's hair?" I knew it was the servant who had done it and not Delilah. The quiz master however got it wrong and I pointed it out and they asked me to keep quite for some extra points haha.
Typically I'm not to into the religious lists, but wow this was an exception.
Awesome way to extend the facts lists, which are a personal favorite
So interesting. I love reading a good/weird list every morning!
Wow, great list.
Hi. I usually do not comment. I love the site. I enjoyed the list greatly especially number 7 as I have had that same debate with friends of mine and have been mostly ignored. I am posting in hopes that no one has won the bible!!
Interesting and well-written list. These misconceptions probably came about because of translation issues from it's original language into English. What was your excellent source?
The text of #7 needs to be updated ….. it is the word 'Rapture' that is not in the Bible. The concept of the Rapture occurs in several places (The Revelation, mainly, but in some of the Pauline letters, as well). Other than that, it is a good list.
The concept was not believed by any Christian until after Mathers – it, like many concepts in modern religion are not based on Christianity but on the interpretations of modern men.
I knew Jonah was swallowed by a fish, but I think I always imagined it being a whale. Most likely because Pinocchio and Gepato got swallowed by a whale….
You got your own facts wrong on a few points I'm afraid.
10: It wasn't so man could be eternal… taht implies no beginning and no end, man had a beginning therefore could not be eternal. It was so man would not live forever in suffering, not because of any "competition" thing. If it was competition, then why offer never-ending life in heaven after earthly death?
9: In Hebrew, which the book was written in, there is no distinction between mammals that live in the ocean, and fish. They use the same word for both. Therefore it could have been a whale. That said… it could also have been a fish. We don't know.
6. Didn't think this was that common a misconception? But I could be wrong on that I suppose.
Overall good list though, I enjoyed it. I'm just a little ***** about these things sometimes :p
The fact that I am an atheist has nothing to do with what I'm going to say:
This list is too short and boring, there's way more interesting mistranslations and misconceptions in the bible that the ones you choose for this list.
what about, for example, the fact that jesus was never nailed to a cross? http://www.examiner.com/rationalism-in-national/c…
Also, there's no eternal punishment in the bible.
For a future reference, if you're panning to make a sequel, here is a good example of a good list. – http://www.cracked.com/article_18757_5-things-you…
I swear, this has no connection with my atheism, just constructive criticism for a site that used to be awesome but now is just one from many, and I can expect a poor list from contributors but not from you jfrater.
and excuse my pathetic english.
I knew #6. The rest were new to me. Good List
Jamie…Jamie…. It's a good thing God has a sense of humor or you would be struck by lightning for number 2 "saddled the ass" comment. I think you may at least stub your toe today.
Great list, read it every day after getting the kids off to school! Merry Christmas all!
Interesting stuff
nice list. nice contest.
I want a nice bible
Great list! I'm going to go have a guilt free drink and wait for my new bible.
This is really a very cool list. Thanks for the insight.
"God doesn’t like competition! " I must respectfully disagree. The great tragedy would be to allow sinful man eternal life. God kicked out A&E to prevent this. Since eternal life is still a gift from God it could not be competition. But I'm guessing you meant this tongue in cheek
Extremely interesting. Fascinating how people of faith don't even know the truth of their "sacred" texts. Makes a very strong point. I found the Moses with Horns the most fascinating…can't wait to see what people think of that one. Great List Frater!
oh snap I would love to win that bible!!
Wonderful! I'm not even religious but I love these details. Especially the confusions between translations, like Moses being "horned".
I'm makin' waffles.
Mmmmmm yummy…but do you have REAL maple syrup from Vermont for them?
(I have a whole gallon in my fridge!!!).
See, now I will have to make waffles as well!
I hope I win!
I'm looking forward to arguing with my grandmother about these topics of discussion. LOL
I am re-posting. I had hoped to win the Bible, as it would be a great gift for my father who is a deacon and a biblical scholar. I instead think that's a little selfish of me as I can probably afford it and others might not be able to. I just hope that the person who receives the book is going to use it!
As the Bible was being translated from ancient languages to modern languages God would not have let those Translating it mistranslate it into something he did not intend for it to meen. Wake up people, do you actually think that God would have us reading something that was not 100 % his word.
Yes, I do.
Any "god" that would ask one his "servants" to kill his own child to prove devotion to him, certainly wouldn't care what we read.
Very good list
WOW! This list accumulated a lot of comments very quickly.
Lists this unbiased and well written are becoming increasingly hard to find. Bravo.
interesting list! Can't help but thinking of how wrong many of the Christmas carols are!
Beautiful Bible! The list was very interesting and I have been a lifetime Christian and learned a few things.
Excellent list. Although there are enough misconceptions on this topic to warrant a second and third list no doubt.
