Lawrence Peter Berra played Major League Baseball for 19 years for the New York Yankees. He played on 10 World Series Championship teams, is a MLB Hall of Famer and has some awe-inspiring stats. His name is consistently brought up as one of the best catchers in baseball history, and he was voted to the Team of the Century in 1999.
Amazing accomplishments aside, they probably aren’t how you know Lawrence. You know him as Yogi, a nickname given to him by a friend who likened his cross-legged sitting to a yogi. Yogi is famous for his fractured English, malapropisms and sometimes nonsensical quotes. He’s closing in on 86, and there seems to be no end to his fan’s love for him.
In honor of the beginning of the US baseball season, here are 25 Yogi Berra quotes that will make you shake your head and smile. Naturally, add your favorites in the comments, there are many more out there!

25. “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

You have to admit, however when it comes to the Sport of Baseball, Yogi’s quote “It ain’t over til its over” which to my mind is so 110% true. And I have seen many games where it is a lopsided game going into the 9th inning and the team losing comes back to win. Just look at Game 6 of the 1986 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets on October 25, 1986. Me being a true blue Boston Red Sox fan can attest to the date and many other anecdotes of that particular game.
“Yogi quote never seen before”……….Walking back from the left field corner after being interviewed with Kurt Bevacqua on opening day in 1978, Yogi opened up the check (stipend) that was given to him for doing the interview, turned to Kurt and said “What do you know, they spelled my name wrong.” Yogi held up the check, Kurt looked over to see the words “Pay to the bearer.”
To Kurt. I have never heard that one and that is a great one. Thank for sharing. There is a book readily available at your local Barnes and Noble or Waldenbook, called “Yogisms” I have it and its a quick read and a helluva lot of fun. What I would like to see is a book written of “quotes of Casey Stengel otherwise known as “Stengelese” in the baseball world. Also I saw an earlier comment on this list from someone who compared Yogi’s quotes as being similar to quotes of Archie Bunker. And you know, he’s absolutely right !!!
I would like to talk about a few of the finest amusing animal movies. In case there’ utes wedding party enjoyment i enjoy, it’ s humorous dog video tutorials. Just the actual skin …Funny pictures
Someone should do a Top 25 List of the quotes of the legendary actress / comedienne Mae West. There are literally hundreds of them !!!

If you can find a list on your computer of the term “Stengelese” (in reference to the legendary Baseball Manager Casey Stengel) look that up and you will probably get just as much of a kick out of it as you would with “Yogisms”
Here a couple of more items. After a ball game he went to his locker room, showered and got dressed and went straight to the hotel that he was staying at. The first thing he did was order a large pepperoni pizza. The cook in the kitchen asked, “Mr. Berra, would you like to have the pizza sliced into 8 pieces ?” Yogi replied, “No just make it 4 slices, I’m not to hungry tonight. In answer as to how he got the name “Yogi” (His actual name was Lawrence Peter Berra, born in 1925 in the Italian section of St. Louis), watch the Ken Burns Documentary “Baseball” It was said that he looked awkward and his schoolmates thought he looked like a “Yogi”. Hence the name stuck with him. I haven’t a clue as to what or where they came up with the name or term “Yogi”
Another fact about Yogi Berra, he grew up as neighbors with the great voice of the St. Louis Cardinals Jack Buck and lived across the street from where he lived with Baseball player and another legendary baseball voice, Joe Garagiola.
I believe this one is true….I don’t even think Yogi could make this up.
Yogi comes home from a day game in New York and asks the wife, “What did you do today, dear?”
The response: “Lawrence and I went to see Dr. Zhivago.”
Yogi: “What the hell’s the matter with him, now?”
