I think it is interesting that you noctied this symbolism and related it back to The Gates of Hell. I also recall from The Hairy Ape that not only does Yank make constant reference to himself being in hell, but others tell him too. Such as the policeman also tells him to go to hell at the end of scene VII. It just goes to show how much influence people have on others.

I love The Selfish Giant! When I was a kid, there was a cartoon of it on TV (this was in the 1970s). It was so sad; we loved it. I found it on YouTube. Was awesome to watch it again. :)

Great list! My favorite was the Cat and the Devil; that story seems fascinating. I have a suggestion, actually, that I sort of expected to see. I didn't realize the era it was sort of gravitating towards either haha. The book is called The Father Christmas Letters by J.R.R. Tolkien. I found two versions of it, one very old looking, in my local library recently. The letters were very .. cool. aha Just thought I'd mention for anyone interested or liking Lord of the Rings! Thanks!

To #2: It should be noted that "hunger artists" where actually quite common in Kafka's times, travelling with circuses and such. So the idea of the story isn't that far fetched as it seems today.
