Site Update: September 2008
Published on September 18, 2008 - 79 Comments
Well - I was going to do monthly updates but it appears that administrative tasks and list writing / editing has gotten the better of me and I have not written since May! I apologize for the delay - but better late than never.

Since our last update we have appeared on Radio Scotland where I was interviewed (or grilled as the case may more aptly be stated). You can listen to the interview here. Many thanks to my brother-in-law Geraint for providing the recording for us. In addition, we recently appeared on the BBC television program “Click” which has nearly doubled our traffic! The injection of “fresh blood” in the comments has been interesting - we have some great new commenters and some rather questionable ones - but all are welcome and we certainly appreciate the new attention. We also had a 30 minute article about the site on BBC Radio (not the same as the BBC Scotland interview) - it can be heard in its entirety here.
As most of you will know, we have two administrators on the site (in addition to me as over-all owner/administrator). We have Cyn (who has been absent recently due to evacuation for Hurricane Ike) who is our main site comments administrator, and dangorironhide who is our forums administrator. I am now happy to (belatedly) welcome Geraint (my brother-in-law as mentioned above) who has now taken on the arduous task of managing the four servers that this site runs on. You may have noticed that our downtime troubles have virtually vanished - that is thanks to his excellent efforts optimizing and monitoring the machines and site.
As we have so many new readers I thought it might be a good idea to just give a little background - especially in light of this comment on the Top 10 Favorite Films of JFrater which I wrote to celebrate my birthday this year: “I dont know who you are but if your choice of movies are anything to go by I wouldnt (sic) invite you to any of my parties” (your loss ManxMark, I am great at parties!) So, I am a New Zealander but started this site while living in London (about one year ago). I was studying opera singing at the Royal College of Music and contracting as a software developer. As many people have asked for a song, this is a recording of me singing Onegin’s Aria with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. I have since returned to New Zealand (Wellington to be exact) to be closer to family and friends.

We have redesigned the front page of the site to showcase the various areas of the site. So far the feedback has been positive but we are always interested in improving the experience of the site - so if you have any complaints or wishes, let them be known. At some point in the future (when the site is making enough money to pay for more than just the hosting) we will get professional designers to give us a makeover - but until then it is just me! Be sure to check out the front page every day - sometimes there are new features that you might like.
I am not a fan of popup and popunder advertising, but one of largest advertisers has recently asked us to trial these (popunders only). After their promise not to include heavily animated or audio ads I have complied and the trial began yesterday. As a compromise for quality, these ads are only showing on the main page and subsidiary pages such as the list archive. No popunder adverts will appear on any lists on the site. This should mean we can generate sufficiently higher revenue to start saving for updates, while not spoiling the viewing experience. Furthermore, the advertiser has assured us that each user will only see one popunder - so don’t be dismayed if you get one - it should be the last one you get. You don’t need to click these ads unless they contain something of value for you - we are paid for views, not clicks. Having said that, if you do like what you see - feel free to click as the advertisers are of high quality and you should not end up at any questionable sites. Please inform me if you have any issues with these ads - the most important thing for me is keeping you all happy! I promise!

We are always looking for high quality submissions. These can be lists of 5 - 30 items and should include at least one paragraph for each item. We have had some brilliant submissions over the history of the site and we would like that to continue. We especially love submissions of a bizarre nature - but we will certainly consider everything. Please remember to spell check your submissions - it can sometimes take me a great deal of time to edit and spellcheck submissions. Submitters may find this list of 10 common English errors, this list of another 10 common English errors, and this list of top 10 tips for great writing useful.
Our second crossword competition ends today! Be sure to get your entries in. This competition is much harder than the last, but that shouldn’t put you off - with a little perseverance you will get there. We have a small number of entries so far, so your chances of winning a prize are great. The prizes are taken from the List Universe Store.

With the larger number of people commenting of late, we seem to have (unexpectedly) a great number of personal attacks - as opposed to attacks of an argument. We pride ourselves here on having great dialog in the comments, and part of that is listening fairly and with an open mind, to the views of other people. No matter how inane someone’s comment may seem, we owe them the benefit of the doubt and should reasonably debate their argument, not make personal attacks. An ad hominem attack (the term to describe attacking the person not the issue) is usually a sign that you have lost the debate. If you find yourself resorting to these types of comments, you probably need to consider whether they may be right and you wrong. This site is about learning - no one learns if we refuse to consider a fair argument from a person holding an opposing viewpoint.

I was recently approached by a Canadian company who wished to buy the site. The offer was a generous one but I turned it down. The reason is that I love the site and I love what it has become with the user contributions. I couldn’t give that up to a faceless organization who are interested in financial gain and nothing else. I hope that this will reassure you all that the site is here to stay and is not going to be usurped by big-business.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has contributed in some way to the site - whether it be as an administrator, a commenter, or a submitter. Without your contributions the site would not succeed - and while I may not say it often, I really do appreciate it. I am proud of the wonderful community that you have all developed here and look forward to many more years of the same.

Don’t forget this admin update guys
2. dunfire - September 18th, 2008 at 3:25 am
One of the few web sites that I visit dailey where my IQ actually increases instead of decreasing like so many other web sites have a knack of doing to me. Thanks for a great web site!
3. knight_forked - September 18th, 2008 at 3:32 am
JFrater: #2 sounds good
Two typos that I noticed:
- whether ‘is’ be as an administrator (should be ‘it’)
- contributions the ’side’ would not succeed (should be ’site’)
Not a big deal, thought would let you know
This indeed is a great site…very informative and definitely a great place to find intellectual (not that I am one) discussions.
4. warningdontreadthis - September 18th, 2008 at 3:46 am
I hope all goes well with Cyn
5. jfrater - September 18th, 2008 at 3:56 am
warningdontreadthis: I believe she is currently waiting for the all-clear to return home. But she really needs to move out of the area she is in because this is far too regular an occurrence!
dunfire: thanks
I am glad you like it!
knight_forked: fixed
Thanks.
6. jhoyce07 - September 18th, 2008 at 4:04 am

11. Lynn in Oregon - September 18th, 2008 at 4:29 am
Thank you jfrater and others for the work you do on this site. I am addicted to Listverse and am here everyday.
Question for you…
Is there an advantage to having a user account?
Thanks again and keep up the good work
12. miki - September 18th, 2008 at 5:21 am
jfrater don’t sell the site
it would be terrible.
keep up the good work! i think it’s the only website i read daily
anyway.. i am a great fan of the listverse..i was reading the articles from the beginning but was to shy to comment anything
13. NickChuck - September 18th, 2008 at 5:29 am
I
14. NickChuck - September 18th, 2008 at 5:31 am
I love this site! I rarely post a comment but I check the site daily, sometimes twice daily. I read all the comments, too, and enjoy them as much as the lists sometimes, thanks to all the regulars that post here.
Keep up the good work!
(Also, this is the second post attempt, I wrote a much longer one before but all that posted was “I”, hehe)
15. NickChuck - September 18th, 2008 at 5:32 am
Also, don’t think I’ve ever posted on a list that had less than 20 posts - usually no matter how new the lists, there’s always a million and a half posts =P
16. Matt Howard - September 18th, 2008 at 5:34 am
Hi jfrater,
This is one of the regular sites I visit (usually to keep me from actually completing uni work), plus it’s my fave:D I’ve started commenting more, so I just wanted to let you know how I think it’s really admirable that you didn’t sell the site. Most people would have, but the fact that you didn’t shows your integrity.
Oh yeah, the creationism ‘your view’ is an awesome topic, a massive amount of responses!
Keep up the good work
Matt
17. Cubbie - September 18th, 2008 at 7:35 am
Thank you to you too! I love this site!
18. Dawn Bearer - September 18th, 2008 at 7:43 am
I admire your devotion to the site Jamie
Keep it up!
19. Vera Lynn - September 18th, 2008 at 7:55 am
This site has changed my life. Cannot thank you enough Jfrater. Best to you forever!!
20. Callie - September 18th, 2008 at 8:13 am
Ha houston-ite’s aren’t going anywhere…my parents have only lived there for three years and have been through 2 major hurricanes. They’re ok though- just without power.
21. Cheeshygirl - September 18th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Jamie, I can never thank you enough for The List Universe. Not only have I learned and laughed, but I’ve also found an amazing and intelligent man who makes me happier than I’ve been in a long time. (Pic posted in the forums now!) We would never have found each other if it weren’t for Listverse bringing us together. As Vera Lynn stated, this site has changed my life. Major kudos to you, Jamie, and to all those who contribute to the quality of LV by adding their own thoughts and feelings in a positive and constructive fashion.
22. Cedestra - September 18th, 2008 at 8:57 am
re: #8: Oh, Jamie, that was beautiful! I had always imagined your range higher, for some reason.
Thank you, in general, but thank you specifically for keeping the site “non-corporate”. I appreciate that you didn’t sell and kept the site under your charge. I would have been disappointed if you had sold it.
23. BishopWhiteT - September 18th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Hey Jamie, as always, still diggin the site. One suggestion though would be to implement something that lets people know when a submission has been received and maybe even some feedback on it, such as: if it will be published and if not, suggestions to improve it, or why it was rejected. Mainly, though just something to let us know you did have a chance to check it out so we aren’t left to wonder if you got it or not.
Keep up the good work!
24. Kreachure - September 18th, 2008 at 9:11 am
JFrater: Thank you very much for your site and all the work you put to it. I’m glad to see you stepping up to the plate proudly with the increasing popularity of the site.
I’m sure even more interesting times are still ahead!!
25. Brithombar - September 18th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Dude, you kick ass.
26. Katie - September 18th, 2008 at 9:21 am
I visit your site daily and want to thank you for the consistent, informative entertainment! I’m sure Cyn will bounce back from Ike, and I can say from experience that everyone in this city immediately got on their feet to do what they could to bring us back to normalcy! It’ll take time, but we Texans (esp Houstonites) are a hardy bunch!
Oh and fantastic voice! good looking too….
27. apzy - September 18th, 2008 at 9:27 am
this is one of the best.
found “out of this world” topics here..lol
you rock Jfrater!!!,…
28. DK - September 18th, 2008 at 9:42 am
Jamie, I think it’s wonderful that you got an offer to buy the site, it just shows how successful it has become! I also think it’s wonderful that you declined the offer, the site truly would not be the same without you in charge!
29. sgvaibhav - September 18th, 2008 at 10:04 am
u look cool admin!!
30. Aaron - September 18th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
You have a great voice!
31. ponteefex - September 18th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I’ve been droppin into this sit via ever since I stumbled upon it some six months ago but only now have I felt the overwhelming need to comment. Well done J Frater for creating and running such a unique site. Not only is it compelling… it is also human… all to human.
Looking forward to engaging in the forums.

32. ponteefex - September 18th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Shame on me for quoting Nietzsche but not tarrying long enough to check my typos… tut tut
33. Mortivore - September 18th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
I’ve posted this a few times, but I’m gonna do it again just for the sake of posting. I freakin love this website. XD I spread it around school as much as I can. And I love being able to randomly spout off facts and have people ask me “How do you -know- all of this stuff?” Makes me feel a great deal smarter. XD
I’m so glad you didn’t sell the site. I would’ve had to go on a modern ninja mission to sabatoge their operation from the inside and somehow give you ownership again. And I’m not a big fan of moving. XD
34. jfrater - September 18th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Thanks all for the comments- it is very heartwarming
It really is a great thing to have so many people share my love for listverse.
Lynn in Oregon: The benefit to registering is that competitions require users to be registered - other than that just the coolness factor (for now)
35. mexmark - September 18th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
this really is one of the best sites online, who else has been checking it from the beginning?….like when it was red haha
36. kiwiboi - September 18th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I have since returned to New Zealand (Wellington to be exact) to be closer to family and friends.
Ahem…not from where I’m standing.
BTW…it’s strange not being able to drop in after a game at Craven Cottage, now that the season has started again
37. copperdragon - September 18th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
thank you for mentioning #3. there are certainly a few regular posters who believe their opinion to be the only one or the correct one, and are not very accepting of other viewpoints.
Also, I second the suggestion for private feedback on unpublished submissions.
Otherwise, keep up the good work. I check in every day, even if I don’t always post (once bitten…).
38. jfrater - September 18th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
kiwiboi: hehe I should have said “to be closer to a great number of family and friends”
39. JwJwBean - September 18th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
JFrater, thank you for listverse. I now know I can not follow a recipe, there are a lot more evil women out there than me and I can prove it to my kids, and I know how to outrun the cops if I ever need to. Hehe. I have a serious addiction to this site and have enjoyed every minute of it. Keep up the good work. Now to find the last 6 crossword answers.
40. SocialButterfly - September 18th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
As Vera and Cheeshy both advised I too am forever changed because of this site. If you ever have a day when you wonder if it’s worth the effort, please talk to me. I could talk about the many ways that this site is amazing!
41. Csimmons - September 18th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Yes SB, first it starts out as gentle commenting on the site, then all out spam, then you get hooked up with Mystern, LoveVerse is amazing isn’t it?
42. astraya - September 18th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
This site is my lifeline to the English speaking world. I am surrounded by Koreans. My only contact with native English speakers comes on Sundays when (if) I go to church. This site is not like actually talking to people, but it helps.
My only grouch is that I don’t ever get any other work done. If I keep Internet Explorer open, I’m always glancing at the “recent comments” section. (I got sucked back into “evolution in schools” that way.) If I close IE, the cravings creep up on me. (Be strong, be disciplined! Fight the urge!)
Don’t sell yourself out, Jamie. Don’t sell us out.
43. jfrater - September 18th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
astraya: I won’t
I love the site too much for that!
44. lotte - September 18th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Wow,jamie’s voice is sexy!
And no,you CAN’T sell the site!
45. SarahJ - September 18th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
keep up the good work Jamie, I am sure your brother in law will be very happy when he sees his name in print!!

Kiwiboi
46. Panic! - September 18th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
I gotta say, Listverse was a brilliant idea.
The lists are fantastic, and there are some really cool people who leave great comments, and it’s all just so damn interesting. Boredom would’ve killed me by now if not for this site.
So, I guess what I’m trying to say is, you get a cookie.
47. enxchanted - September 18th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
You have a wonderful voice, Jamie
48. downhighway61 - September 19th, 2008 at 2:25 am
No, thank YOU for all of the time, money and effort you have put into Listverse. This site, or something relating to it, is usually the first thing I’m on and the last thing I’m on. Which is why I constantly have Listverse dreams.
How does it feel to know you have caused at least 4 relationships?
49. fishing4monkeys - September 19th, 2008 at 3:25 am
The recent rise in personal attacks is probably due to the fact that a lot of recent lists are being linked to the main page of ebaumsworld.com …whose members are notorious for personal attacks. Just read some comments on the site and you’ll see what I mean..
50. segue - September 19th, 2008 at 7:46 am
jfrater, this is the *only* site I visit on a daily basis, and only one of two I visit at all. The general level of both intelligence and humor is high (have you ever noticed how it takes a really intelligent mind to be able to laugh at itself, as well as at absurd situations?).
I consider LV my daily dose laughter, education, debate, and mental vacation from the real world, which isn’t always so kind. If this is my escapism, it’s the best form of escapism I can imagine!
Thank you for creating LV, and for lovingly guiding it through all these months. You’ve done as much good for me as have many of my doctors. More good!
To all of the regulars I’ve come to know, and consider part of my world, thank you.
51. Kelsi - September 19th, 2008 at 8:13 am
I’ve been enjoying most of the lists as always, but I’m not happy about the popunders! Hopefully they won’t be around long…
52. Maggot - September 19th, 2008 at 9:01 am
jfrater: it ain’t gonna happen! [re selling the site]
I am with everyone else here in that I would hate to see that happen, and appreciate your dedication to “keepin’ it real”. But, I do realize that everyone has a price. So if one day someone makes you an offer you can’t refuse, well I’d understand…
53. Lynn in Oregon - September 19th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Thanks also to the regular commentors.. reading your comments is usually as good the list itself. Not only has this site and it’s readers kept me entertained, I have also learned more about the world around me.
Thanks!
54. kim - September 19th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Jamie that was wonderful. Thank you for sharing not only your views and ideas but you wonderful voice.
Keep up the great work!
55. Metalwrath - September 19th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
I don’t comment here often but I’ve been visiting for a while now and I do visit the site every day or two to check out the newest list(s).
Great site!
I could tell you (jfrater) were cultivated and had fine tastes but I was far from thinking you were an opera singer! Your voice is fantastic! The classiest in that mp3 is the applause at the end though
keep up the good work and its very cool of you to not want to sell the site. What a keeper ^^
56. sheltiesan - September 19th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
#3: God Bless you! I’ve noticed a lot more of that in the last few months.
#2: Thank you! Please don’t ever, ever sell us out. We all love it here so much!
I’m not much of a commenter, but I love this site. I look forward to coming home and seeing what the list for the day is. I also enjoy reading the comments. I find this site very educational as well as entertaining.
I’ve been “hooked” for about a year, now. Thanks jfrater for such an interesting site.
57. DK - September 19th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
I love how the periodic “Update” postings bring out the lurkers:D “Lists” like this really help give this site a personal touch, and I think it’s great how many of the comments here are from people who say they “don’t post often.”
58. YO-YO - September 19th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
No No thank U for everything U did i think this is the best site ever THANK YOU
59. Denzell - September 19th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
I expected you to look a lot geekier, you know- curly hair and thick-rimmed glasses…
60. Denzell - September 19th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
The site also changed my life and made me quit being carefree in the sense of “being shallow.”
61. LemonKiwi - September 20th, 2008 at 5:08 am
Keep up the great work. I really enjoy the site. I get to learn things I didn’t know and my list of things to look up is getting longer =). I enjoy reading the comments from people all over the world. Thank you for all the work you put into the site.

Some Bizarre Top Tens you wont see on The List Universe:
10 Cannibal Recipes That Only My Mother Could Love.
-not only is it a great alternative to the current human population overgrowth and depletion of our world resources, but is one of the Top Ten ways to be closer to Mum. Includes great cullinary tips so you wont show up to the next family reuinion redhanded!
10 Ways To Beat A Dog At Card Tricks And Gloat Over The Fact That The Audiance Can’t Tell The Difference.
- It may sound like a casual night out at your local theater, but your in for an event that the dog wont soon forget.
wich brings me to:
10 Best Bestiality Love Songs.
- Didn’t think there were ten did you? Could only think of eight, right? Well with this list you too can become the life of the party.
which brings us to:
10 Quaint Dance Tunes About Anal Sex.
- Allright. This list would cause quite a stir, no dought, but where else will you learn that Gibby Haines, of The Buttholesurfers, has a pet dog named,”Mr. Cigar”?
-And what’s a list like this without “Fear” and a little Ving?
What’s that over there you ask, but:
10 Happy Banjo Songs Sung and Played By Clowns
-sounds tame and maybe not so bizarre, but a list like this CANNOT be compiled. so sorry happy clowns.
Theres:
10 “Happy-No-Worry & Everything’s Just Fine” List by comment/list contributer Rushfan
- it’s possible but unlikely
and the contest that turned into a list:
Top 10 Scabs Sent In By “Listverse” Devotees.
-A contest is held where readers are asked to send in their bigest, largest, most stupendous scab–that can be created in one months time. The winner’s name will be posted and they will have the prize choice of a coffee mug or a tiny teddy bear with the List Universe log printed on it! GET SCABBING KIDS! It’s worth the pain.
Reason given for piling up user scabs is vegue. Some possiblities are the making of a kite or a weather proof poncho or just one Gigantic Mega Scab.

hey j!
i just wanted to say thanks for not selling out. ive been a member here for quite a while and i love how things are run under your command. i dont talk much on the site, but i think now is one of the rare moments where i must voice my opinion. Thanks j, the site means alot to everyone, especially me! keep it up!

I R BACK!
well..home. and sorta online. thankfully to no significant damage. this was not as bad an evac situation as Rita but still has been a rough time for us. so we’re taking some time off to relax and get back into our own routines again. i’ll chat w/ J soon and get caught up. see how things are going here.
i appreciate the comments…thanx ya’ll. and yes, J ..this has been way too frequent an occurrence. once we’re settled again. recuperated etc. my focus will be getting us the HELL out of ‘hurricane alley’….details pending… and suggestions welcome…lol

69. Angharad - September 24th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Popunders are *horrible.* I’m not going to visit as often because they always sneak through my anti-popup-plugins. I guess I can’t stay away entirely because you have a fantastic site, but that’s… really low.
70. jfrater - September 24th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Angharad: They are only on subsidiary pages and lists that are older than 7 days - this helps to capitalize on older lists that get little traffic. Please remember that the site is costing me nearly $1,000 per month to run (not including my time) and advertising is the ONLY source of revenue. You get hours of my day, use of my servers, and don’t have to pay for it. It is not really unfair of me to try to make the most of the advertising to cover costs really is it?
71. segue - September 24th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Jamie, that explanation really shocked me! I had no idea how much it was costing you personally to run this site.
I have to say it’s well worth it. I honestly visit only your site on a daily basis, and only one additional site (aside from certain science sites) on a casual basis.
LV attracts a more intelligent overall level of poster, and the lists are almost always ones that give you something to think about, and usually teach you something by the time it’s all over.
I can’t imagine another site I’d want to visit daily.
Thank you for this, Jamie.
Truly.
72. JwJwBean - September 24th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
I have only had the popunder come up once. I have never had it try any other time while I was on this computer. It came up once on another computer, but I have not seen one on that computer since then either. It takes only a few seconds to close or click it. I would rather have this than a popup. Those tend to have bad timing that end up right in my field of whatever I am trying to read.

I can’t go to the home page, it shuts down my poor excuse of a computer. If I go to the archives I have to pick something quickly, if I stay there for more than a few seconds my computer shuts down. It’s probably the programming for the ads (I guess). I don’t expect that anything can be done about it. It’s up to me to get a better computer.

Jamie,
I hate to tell you this, but I got a popunder while viewing this list. Truthfully, I did not find it annoying, and it will not chase me away from my beloved listverse, but I’m just letting you know that they are happening on lists.

I think there may be a bug with the popunder. Not sure; I haven’t really looked into it. I just came back from vacay in the UK and had this issue while on the site on my MacBook. I was using Firefox 3, do not have any script blocking, and am not yet running Leopard on the notebook. When going through my usual list of sites for the day I’ll open them all at once in separate tabs and then read each site in order. I found that if I didn’t stay on the Listverse tab, instead of getting a popunder, the tab redirected to a random other site. It’s been a different site each time, but they’ve all seemed fairly dodgy; they seemed as though I shouldn’t mouseover anything and they all asked if I wanted to download their software while viewing the site. (Uh, no….) This has only ever happened in the tab I loaded Listverse in. Not sure if it’s a known problem or a fluke or what, but I thought I’d bring it to your attention.

Just a FYI to those who *HATE* popup’s and popunder’s: change your browser to Firefox and the problem eliminates itself 95 - 100% of the time.
I honestly do not remember the last time I’ve seen a popup.
