Logo Competition Winner
Published on February 3, 2008 - 80 Comments
I am very pleased to announce that the winner of the logo competition is David Rygiol (Davidr4889). His logo was voted top out of the final five by our readers and was also my preference. Below are the two representations of the logo that he submitted:
David is about to complete the BFA program at San Jose State University in California. The text of his brief follows:
A good logo clearly communicates the mission and ideals of the organization it represents with a simple and engaging visual statement. A great logo not only does this successfully, but it also inspires. I believe that this logo is a clear and profound representation of your vision, and that it will inspire an interest in learning and discovery among visitors of The List Universe.
Concept
After spending some time exploring your website and getting a general feel for what you stand for, I took the two words ”list” and “universe” and through a process of word association and idea gathering came up with some visual guidelines for the logo. For list, I thought it was important to include a clear representation of the number 10, since your site is founded on top 10 lists and similar lists. Thus I included the 10 white dots within the deep orange circle. Universe is an extremely broad and somewhat abstract term, but I chose to represent feelings and ideas of an infinite space of information, to communicate the extensive nature of your website’s content.
Design
Although this logo at first appears complicated, it is actually very simple and easily reproducible. I have also designed a one color option for simpler applications, which I display on the following page. The entire mark uses only 2 colors: Black and Orange, but makes use of combining these colors to achieve depth and richness. The typeface is Avenir, a very simple and modern face that brings a somewhat distinguished feeling to the logo, while not coming across as pretentious.
Congratulations David! You definitely deserve the prize!

15. Drogo - February 3rd, 2008 at 6:27 am
Looks really cool to me! I like it.
16. JT - February 3rd, 2008 at 6:40 am
I love it. Reminds me of the kind of logo a book shop like Waterstones would have.
17. jocsboss - February 3rd, 2008 at 6:56 am
Good call. Was my choice. You coulda just asked me.
18. Kiribub - February 3rd, 2008 at 6:58 am
w00t! My favorite, too!
19. Kiribub - February 3rd, 2008 at 6:58 am
P.S. want a mug. No, two; Mrs. likes it.
20. jocsboss - February 3rd, 2008 at 7:05 am
Jamie, are you going to change the text at all? Like to ListVerse.com?
21. JwJwBean - February 3rd, 2008 at 8:13 am
What a great write-up and explanation. Now I totally get the 10 dots.
22. Mom424 - February 3rd, 2008 at 8:42 am
Great choice. Congratulations David!
23. jfrater - February 3rd, 2008 at 9:35 am
jocsboss: I am kinda treating the text as seperate - so I can make that whatever I want - the actual logo is the most important thing. On the mugs etc. I will put listverse.com and I will probably do a few shirts with just the logo on the front - and maybe text on the back.
Would you all prefer the multi-toned logo for merchandise or the single color? David is about to do a blue version for me - based on the new site colors.
24. Gravy - February 3rd, 2008 at 9:45 am
Good choice!
25. Ravyn - February 3rd, 2008 at 9:50 am
I like the multi-toned logo. This logo was my second pick with the two-tone. The multi-toned version looks sooooo much better in my opinion.
26. Monkey - February 3rd, 2008 at 9:54 am
Yay! I like the multi-colored one. I think you should keep the reddish-orange color though. I can’t wait to buy a Listverse coffee mug!
27. warrrreagl - February 3rd, 2008 at 10:01 am
I was going to draw that one, but David beat me to it. Great job, David! I like it.
28. god_in_a_cup - February 3rd, 2008 at 10:19 am
blasphemy.
29. NoPunyNerd - February 3rd, 2008 at 11:05 am
Multi-toned looks even better than the plain one, which was my first choice from the git-go. The added depth increases the interestingness factor tremendously.
Good job, David4889!
30. fishing4monkeys - February 3rd, 2008 at 11:26 am
I think this logo is boring but whatever…it’s the lists that I come to this site for not the logo
31. Heaven - February 3rd, 2008 at 11:28 am
Personally I prefer the plain one. Especially if it’s in blue instead. But if the multi-toned one was blue also, then I suppose it wouldn’t look that bad.
32. Ranger - February 3rd, 2008 at 11:29 am
Hey everyone, i’ve been on this site since about august, and i’ve gone through every list about twice and im checking on new ones everyday. i absolutely LOVE this site. I’m glad that you’re going to be merchandising because i think i’ll buy a mug or T-shirt. Thanks for all the time and effort you’ve put into getting these lists published. I think this website can go pretty far, yknow? one of those great website getting rich things :-). Congratulations David, and thanks J.
33. ringtailroxy - February 3rd, 2008 at 11:31 am
hemanth: i agree with the “milky way” reference, and i mentioned it on the finals post! as an avid amateur astronomer, i couldn’t help but see the parallel. also, it looks like a definitive “view” of the universe, or at least, the globe!
nice work, David! good choice, Jaime! i think this logo conveys the singular thought of the many, contributing to knowledge as a whole, which is why their are only 10 dots and a whole ‘ocean’ of possibilities…
plus, if you can, it would good if it was offered in different colors, such as blue or green… because i look terrible in red! (red tend to wash out natural blondes…)
34. lightningclash - February 3rd, 2008 at 11:41 am
I didn’t like that logo at first, but it definitely grows on you. Great work!
35. heavybison - February 3rd, 2008 at 11:44 am
#JF: I hope u’ll just change the color theme of the site and not much else because the best thing about this site is it’s simple and clean interface.
36. dangorironhide - February 3rd, 2008 at 11:53 am
Well done mate. Wouldn’t have been my personal choice, but then I don’t run the site.
37. jfrater - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:04 pm
heavybison: did you look at the new design? It is even cleaner than this one: http://listverse.com/beta/lvlist.html - the logo looks AMAZING in shades of blue. I think you will all be pleased. Obviously it is lacking the logo at the moment and I am still tweaking, but that is what the site is likely to end up looking like - and soon - I am hoping to start implementing the changes tomorrow - with the merchandise starting then or the day after.
38. jfrater - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:06 pm
ringtailroxy: I do plan to offer it in a variety of colors - I might do a brief run of the current listverse red/orange (as is seen in the logo above) - but then I will change to blue for the majority (in keeping with the new site design) and a variety of other colors.
39. Blogball - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Way to David! I think this will look just great on Merchandise.
40. phunniemee - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:18 pm
jfrater: Regarding the new site design you linked to…can you please pad the left side of the screen? Text is uncomfortable to read when it’s abutting the edge like that. Everything else is great.
Oh, and the multi-toned logo makes all the difference. Less “bank”.
41. goof_ball - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:33 pm
I’m sorry David, but I like others way better. Congratulations though anyway. I don’t come for the logos though so it’s okay. Out of the two given, I like the second one better.
42. jfrater - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:36 pm
phunniemee: I have doubled the left padding. What browser are you using? At present I have only tested in Safari.
43. phunniemee - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I’m using Firefox. The padding on the right is huge, and on the left there’s none. (Well, maybe 10 pixels or something.)
44. jfrater - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:41 pm
phunniemee: could you maybe do a screen shot and email it to jamie@frater.com?
45. jfrater - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
phunniemee: try it again - I have uploaded the latest stylesheet with the wider left padding
46. Andie_Girl9 - February 3rd, 2008 at 12:57 pm
WOOO!!! All that campaigning really paid off!! Now, I can die happy.
-Andrea Carlena Beauman
47. phunniemee - February 3rd, 2008 at 1:00 pm
jfrater: I emailed you.
48. islanderbst - February 3rd, 2008 at 1:04 pm
count me for sticking with the current orange layout and the single color logo
but either way im sure listverse will still rule
49. Janet - February 3rd, 2008 at 2:36 pm
I love it!!!
Thats the one I voted for.
50. Heaven - February 3rd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
jfrater: I agree with phunniemee, the text IS too hard to read when it’s that far over. I like how the layout of the site currently is centered… makes it much nicer.
51. newsong - February 3rd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Still not a fan, but I hate minimalism.
52. GRUMPYNZ - February 3rd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Looks great!
53. CJ - February 3rd, 2008 at 4:15 pm
I like the multi toned one - I think it will look sharp in the blue.
54. sarahenity - February 3rd, 2008 at 4:43 pm
hmmm. wasn’t my favourite, but i think it will look much much better in blue.
congrats david!
55. JwJwBean - February 3rd, 2008 at 4:56 pm
I like the multitoned one too, but how does it print on a shirt?
56. sarahj - February 3rd, 2008 at 5:19 pm
thats a great choice! I like it.
57. sarah at the disco - February 3rd, 2008 at 7:20 pm
its a goo done…but i liked number 2 on the top 5 better :p
58. abhare.hemant - February 3rd, 2008 at 8:56 pm
congo david………
cheers..
59. Lynx - February 3rd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Multi-toned…for sure!
“Would you all prefer the multi-toned logo for merchandise or the single color? David is about to do a blue version for me - based on the new site colors.”
60. 20Fan20 - February 3rd, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Great job! I think you did a slick job on the logo. I look forward to seeing it used.
WOW this is the most agreeable comment section I have read so far!!!
Don’t worry David someone will bring up a song from the bible that was played in a geek movie and all hell will break loose!
61. DiscHuker - February 3rd, 2008 at 9:51 pm
that’s cool to see the artist’s explanation of what he was thinking. didn’t even connect the fact that there were 10 dots for top 10 lists. good work and congratulations david.
62. jesse - February 3rd, 2008 at 10:27 pm
i new it would be the one
63. Kathy Katholica - February 3rd, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Very well done, quite a good choice!
64. ravivarma2k - February 4th, 2008 at 12:44 am
great choice (cute and simple)
hey few people mistake it for a cricket ball(not from a closer view though)
the cricket ball is of a similar color and the white dots resemble the seam(threads)
as many of those following list verse are not from cricketing nations,,,, it dosent matter…
65. fishing4monkeys - February 4th, 2008 at 5:18 am
Is it just me or does listverse look like one of those annoying advertisement sites you get when you misspell a website name like listvers.com or ikipedia.com ?
66. fishing4monkeys - February 4th, 2008 at 5:19 am
Sorry for the double (well triple now) post I didn’t think the first one posted so I posted a second and now I look like a spammer…
67. jfrater - February 4th, 2008 at 5:21 am
fishing4monkeys: you think the new design looks like that?
68. dangorironhide - February 4th, 2008 at 5:23 am
I actually agree with fishing4monkeys a bit on this one. I much prefered the old layout, I thought it was a lot easier to navigate.
69. jocsboss - February 4th, 2008 at 5:35 am
I like the new layout, mostly. In Firefox, with a widescreen monitor, the entire right half of my screen is just blank pale blue. That doesn’t bother me though.
70. jocsboss - February 4th, 2008 at 5:41 am
Oh, forgot to mention, I picked number 1 as my favourite. The multicoloured option wasn’t displayed. I like some of the change but not all of it. I like the colour gradient on the circle, but there are way too many little dots everywhere. It looks cluttered and spastic. Something like a drop shadow on the white circles would have been a lot nicer. It would add depth to the logo without being so messy.
71. cryndigo - February 4th, 2008 at 8:12 am
I didn’t like this one but congratulations to David.
72. fishing4monkeys - February 4th, 2008 at 8:12 am
jfrater: I don’t mean to bash your site or your designing or anything like that but yeah…a little. It’s not so much the new colors rather the way that it is now aligned to the left…I hope I didn’t offend you by what I said because I didn’t mean it like that at all.
73. fishing4monkeys - February 4th, 2008 at 8:54 am
On second thought the old colors with the new layout or the new colors with the old layout would look great!!!
74. fishing4monkeys - February 4th, 2008 at 8:56 am
I think the new colors with the old layout would be the best because I always use the “view a random list button” and if I land on a list i’ve read already I don’t have to move my mouse I just click again and I keep doing this until I get to a really good list that I havn’t read…lazy I know
And sorry for the multiple posts in a row I just kept thinking of something else to say. haha
75. Hannah - February 4th, 2008 at 10:12 am
Jamie: The new design for the website looks awesome! I love the new colors and the new logo is really cool!
Congratulations David and Jamie!
76. Vanna - February 4th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Jfrater: What was the font used in the old logo? It’s super cute
77. Vanna - February 4th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
I be honest, I prefer the OLD colors with the NEW layout. For some reason, the blue looks too corporate. The old colors were warm and alive
78. Ravyn - February 4th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
I already said in the logo contest that shades of blue is over done and used by too many corperates. But that is my opinion.
79. hgaratie - February 4th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I think I like the orange also, but the logo looks really good in blue though!
80. jrjb - February 4th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
logo is fine. blue is cool but I agree with the others orange
was great.
