Top 10 Common Methods of Suicide
Published on November 18, 2007 - 123 Comments
[WARNING: This list contains adult content and images] The unfortunate and depressing issue of suicide has become a staggering piece of harsh reality in today’s world. In the US, ranking 46th in the world of rates per capita, we experience 11,000 self-inflicted deaths per year, and the UK: 7,000. This has become a serious issue for many countries whether the factors be family issues, health issues, money problems, or relationship failures. The ways in which people decide to shuffle this mortal coil are numerous and varying. Ten of the most often seen are as follows.
10. Drowning
How it’s Done: Maybe a relationship tremor has caused you to rethink your life here on the planet, and the weight of it all has made you decide to drown yourself. Sometimes, driving or even convincing yourself to walk into a large body or water will do it, otherwise many perish in as little water as a slightly-filled bathtub.
Results From Failure: Oxygen deprivation can cause severe and permanent brain damage.
9. Electric Shock
How it’s Done: Sometimes the thought of continuing to live in a world inundated with problems and insurmountable issues results on one wanting to die by electric shock. Something as simple as jamming a utensil in a wall outlet, to the more notable dunking an appliance in an occupied bathtub, can result in death by electric shock.
Results From Failure: Deep burns from 500-1000 volts, ventricular fibrillation at 110-220 volts, and severe neurological damage.
8. Exsanguination
How it’s Done: Frequently the most obvious way to rapidly harm one’s self yet pass on relatively slowly, is to slit the wrists or the carotid, radial, ulnar, or femoral artery. Using a sharp implement is the easiest way to go. Razors or knives are popular. Contrary to popular belief, the effective method for this is not to cross the wrist, but to draw the blade up the forearm (as is evident in the photograph above). This is the same way Japanese perform Jigai (women) and Seppuku (men), although their’s is often for more spiritual purposes.
Results From Failure: Extreme loss of blood causing the heart to dramatically slow eventually depriving the brain of oxygen. Also, most often, deep scars and tissue damage.
7. Jumping
How it’s Done: Pondering the emptiness in one’s life can be a painful experience. Yet, when it all seems so overwhelming, you might decide to plummet from a significant height to your own death. Leaping from a building to the pavement below is quite lethal, and popular. However, romantics may choose to use a cliff over jagged rocks. Or bridges.
Results From Failure: Shattered femurs from impacting with water up to severe bodily harm from impacting with any solid surface.
6. Suffocation
How it’s Done: You’ve decided that your life is in disarray and you can no longer stand the pressure. One way to end it all is to encase your head in a plastic bag and asphyxiate yourself. Or, if you’re really ready to go, nitrogen or helium directly inhaled is useful.
Results From Failure: Turning back at the last minute before passing out can result in serious and long-lasting to permanent brain damage.
5. Carbon Monoxide Inhalation
How it’s Done: It’s all so difficult and the full weight of the world is seemingly square upon your shoulders. You’ve decided to go to the great beyond and you are going to lock yourself in a car, in a closed garage with the engine running and go to sleep. Or, if you have any appliance that puts of CO, that’ll do.
Results From Failure: CO molecules irreversibly attach themselves to human hemoglobin and the result is often fatal even if one backs out.
4. Poisoning
How it’s Done: Romeo and Juliet had it down when, once seeing the other presumably dead, the other fatally poisons himself. Taking a substance internally not meant to be done so can be considered poisoning: cleaners, industrial fluids, diazepam, cyanide, and the like.
Results From Failure: The toxic levels of poison required to kill one’s self are generally non-reversible. However, hospital staff can attempt it and often make one vomit or something similar. Lasting effects can include internal organ damage.
3. Hanging
How it’s Done: It’s all over. Nothing in life seems to make it worth living any more. You can acquire a length of rope and construct yourself a noose, which is, by the way, considered a deadly weapon if tied correctly. Once built, wrap one end securely around something high: a rafter or a ceiling fan, and leap, head fastened within the loop, from a chair. Or, if you’re short of rope, anything strong enough to support your weight from your neck can be employed.
Results From Failure: Brain damage from lack of oxygen, Often, failure to actually break your own neck may only yield strangulation and you can be saved, but damaged. Also, permanent rope burns or implement scarring can occur.
2. Drug / Alcohol Overdose
How it’s Done: The pressure and stress of daily routines has beaten you down for the final time. Within your medicine cabinet lies the answer to your extermination: prescription and over-the-counter meds. A huge mouthful can do you right in. Or, to speed along the process, couple your target pills with a few swigs of alcohol. Many of our favorite musicians have chosen this route. Even alcohol alone, in extreme excess can kill you.
Results From Failure: Severe to permanent organ failure if successful removal isn’t achieved, as well as impaired judgment. Often, clinical assistance is necessary if attempt is repeated.
1. Gun Shot
How it’s Done: One of the most often achieved forms of suicide is by gun shot. Generally a head shot is desired since its results are 99 percent effective, however a chest shot can be equally as devastating.
Results From Failure: Sometimes the blast isn’t enough to kill. In this case, severe to permanent bodily damage can occur as well as blood loss, organ and tissue damage, and brain damage.
Support
Suicide is never a solution. There is no problem so great that it can not be resolved with time and care. This list is meant not as an instruction guide, but a description of the most common forms of suicide. The following is a list of sites you can visit to get help if you are feeling beyond help. Please remember, no matter how bad things get, someone, somewhere is able to listen to you and help you through.

This reminds me of alt.suicide.holiday, the most comprehensive suicde manual on the internet.
http://www.cat.pdx.edu/~chuff/holiday.html
It’s pretty incredible to read through, and very useful for those who wish to committ suicide.
http://www.cat.pdx.edu/~chuff/holiday.html
P.S please do not commit suicide anyone; permanent solution to temporary problem etc etc
2. amoondoo - November 18th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
dude….
3. jfrater - November 18th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
JT: great links - thanks
4. JJ - November 18th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
there are cases when suicide is a good idea i.e. when already dying from an illness
5. jfrater - November 18th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
JJ: I don’t agree - you can be given pain killers so you don’t suffer, and your family, as a result, get to do the things they need to do to have closure when you die.
6. Sara - November 18th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
great list, but extremely disturbing. wow.
7. Conor R - November 18th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
I’ve been following this site since its inception and have found its content interesting and entertaining. Ways to commit suicide, however, I think is going too far.
Making methods more easily available can only make the problem worse.
8. Tlmabp - November 18th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
well the gun shot suicide is the best because is almost 100% painless and quick.
9. Mike - November 18th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
I have had your list in my favorites for awhile now and have enjoyed it.
You have every right to post this, but sadly, I now have to delete your site.
Even if one person reads this and is successful in committing suicide, it will be one to many.
Please provide a list of suicide prevention as a follow up to this.
Thank you
10. ian - November 18th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
it maybe painless and quick at the time of death but how much pain do you have to go through before you actualy do it and how long do you feel that pain…so its probably not that painless and quick after all
and i agree this list maybe be going alittle to far at the very least you shouldnt call it a “TOP 10″
having had a friend who committed suicide a couple years ago this list brought back strange feelings i had from that time.
11. amie - November 18th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
You know, you read the title of this list. If you disagree with it, why read it?
Yes, this list could be considerable controversial, however, is he really listing anything the general public does not know?
As far as gun shot suicides, I have a friend who tried and failed. He is now scarred forever, along with many health problems.
12. BrotherMan - November 18th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Seppuku was used by the samurai warriors who had to maintain their honor most often after a dishonorable act. I took a religion class in college we read about the samurai religion and the book did not involve anything about them slitting their wrists but rather the samurai stabbing themselves in the stomach with a knife and pulling upwards basically disemboweling themselves. Afterwards a skilled samurai would decapitate them ending the ritual
13. MCardona - November 18th, 2007 at 2:30 pm
Are you kidding me? Another lurker here, emerging to question whether those of you that take offense to the list actually believe it is enough to make someone kill themselves. You could ask any reasonably intelligent adult/adolescent, and I’m sure he or she could list all of these suicide methods plus a few more. Jfrater has a list of torture techniques; is that going to make people go out and torture someone? Maybe they want to test out the archaic methods of execution listed on the site? And forget about drugs. I’m sure there’s someone that read the list on drugs who is sitting in the corner of some crackhouse with a needle in one hand and a pipe in the other. Get serious; if you are so worried about people killing themselves, go volunteer at a suicide prevention hotline.
14. MCardona - November 18th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
Oh, by the way, jfrater, I love your site. I read books of lists and was psyched when I found your site. I went back and read every list but never commented until now. Keep up the good work!
15. StewWriter - November 18th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Goodness, struck a nerve here didn’t we?
16. Jill - November 18th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
I find this list the most disturbing.
17. petey mcgee - November 18th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
yeah, i agree that this one seems inappropriate. love the site and will continue to read, but just so dark…
18. MCardona - November 18th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
I just hate when people blame everything/everyone except the person that made his or her own decision anyway, whether it be a list of suicide methods, a video game, a song, etc.
19. MCardona - November 18th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
25 Methods for Killing With Your Bare Hands
20. jfrater - November 18th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
Please note: I have now added a section on support - with web sites and telephone numbers to help people who are reading this list with the wrong intentions.
Mike - and other who think this shouldn’t have been posted, I specifically wanted included the “results from failure” in order to make people realize how real and how devestating suicide is - more often than not people DO fail and those are the horrific consequences.
Having done that, I care about what the readers of the site think, and if sufficient numbers of you tell me to remove this list, I will do so.
21. jfrater - November 18th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
MCardona: frankly I post lists that interest me - I (like many others) have an interest in the darker side of life. Frankly, there are over 300 lists on this site and most of them are not death related. I personally believe this list should not be suppressed - though as I have just said (in my previous comment) - if sufficient demand from loyal readers requests its removal, I will comply.
22. Juggz - November 18th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
What I am about to say may offend some, but it is a life long motto and It definately applies to this list.
If offend you because of a loved one who committed suicide, I apologize in advance for your loss.
but here we go!
“If more STUPID people killed themselves, there would be less STUPID people in the world!”
End of story!
23. dalandzadgad - November 18th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
this list might be more appropriate(?) if it was backed up factually: total number of deaths per method, frequency, and geographical range.
24. Juggz - November 18th, 2007 at 3:05 pm
nobody would be complaining if the title read a little bit more like a list about the most common methods of suicide.
25. jfrater - November 18th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
Juggz: You are right and I have changed the title accordingly. It was certainly not my intention to endorse suicide. In fact, may people can take advantage of the comments here to post their advice on helping someone that may be considering it.
26. Cyn - November 18th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
few thoughts:
i support freedom of speech/expression.
you have a choice of reading a list or not. this is preceded w/ a warning. finished off w/ ways to find help.
there are many, many other lists on site that are entertaining and much lighter fare. i suggest you check those out instead if the subject matter is unpleasant to you.
one entry does not a site make, so keep that in mind if this one entry has turned you off to listverse. i would urge anyone who says they will not return to reconsider.
and as always, anyone is welcome to submit lists they feel are more appropriate to the site or are rebuttals of a kind to any list already online.
and of course i’m biased…i love this site!
*smoochies* to J
27. MCardona - November 18th, 2007 at 3:13 pm
jfrater: I just wanted to make sure you realize that I am in complete agreement with you; I couldn’t tell from your last comment. I have no problem with any list on your site and love reading them.
28. jfrater - November 18th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Cyn: Thank you
MCardona: I realized that after posting
Thanks for the support.
29. Mike - November 18th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Thank you, I am pleased to see that you did add suicide prevention hot lines and changed the title.
Honestly, I expected people to flame me for my comments and quite the opposite happened, intelligent conversation. Where else can you find that on a site. My compliments to all.
As for making a choice to view certain material on this site, I do tend to stay away from certain material based on the description provided.
Based on what I have seen from your readers and yourself I will stick around. But forgive me now for any future comments that I make.
Have a great Thanksgiving.
30. jfrater - November 18th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
Mike: no forgiveness is needed for future comments - your views matter as much as mine and deserve an airing! I am pleased you are going to stay around and I look forward to future comments from you! And thanks for the thanksgiving wishes - same to you and your loved ones!
31. xdarkhorsex - November 18th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
Suicide seems to be one of those topics in society that is always verboten. however, talking about suicide is NOT going to plant the idea in someone’s head or give them a route to take. Someone who is suicidal has already thought of it. Talking about suicide actually has the reverse effect of what people commonly think, as one learns when taking a suicide awareness course.
Keep the list, good on you for adding the phone numbers and links. The first phone number that you have listed for the USA is applicable in Canada as well, if you could add that.
Juggz: as far as your comment “If more STUPID people killed themselves, there would be less STUPID people in the world!”, that’s about the most idiotic and insensitive thing I’ve read in awhile. Suicide, to one who is contemplating it, is not the “cowards way out”, to the person who is feeling that way it is often the ONLY way out. i pray that you will never be in such a state of depression.
32. xdarkhorsex - November 18th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
I would like to add this link to the list, it would make a great list in and of itself, however it’s not mine.

33. Fruckert - November 18th, 2007 at 4:23 pm
i had no idea there was a name for wrist slitting…
34. GTA - November 18th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
Nice list, i like these kind of “Death” lists
35. Kelsi - November 18th, 2007 at 6:19 pm
Interesting list. These definately are the most common…but there are so many out there. I don’t have any problem with this list, suicide is all over the place in the media, entertainment, etc. It is increasingly discussed in many subcultures, some of which I have identified with. It is a real problem, and I don’t beleive it should be shied away from or soulutions and methods for preventions will never be explored by the greater population, which I believe is important. darkhorse, I think that is an excellent link, thank you. =)
36. Borg - November 18th, 2007 at 6:27 pm
I have great respect for what Jamie does and how he does it, but I have a strong distaste for this list. I can’t really explain it though since there are few more morbid than I and suicide is the subject matter of some of my favorite books (Steppenwolf, A Long Way Down), music (anything by the Smiths, really) and movies (The Bridge). Although I find it a fascinating topic, I suppose I feel that a top ten list is just not the appropriate medium for suicide. I don’t wish for the list to be removed, I just wanted to voice my opinion.
Oh and Juggz, maybe I misunderstood the point you were making but there are a lot of very intelligent people who are very depressed. I do not think only stupid people commit suicide.
37. TerranRich - November 18th, 2007 at 6:59 pm
A lot of you people are seriously overreacting to this list. A person willing to commit suicide will find a way, regardless of this list’s existence or not.
Get a grip, seriously.
Awesome list, as always!
38. Borg - November 18th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
To be honest, the most offensive thing about this list to me are the commenters who tout free speech and then criticize those who have a difference of opinion. People have just as much right to be offended by this as they do to enjoy it.
39. conni - November 18th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
I for one, love the wide assortment of lists to be found here and hope Jfray continues as usual. There are warnings beforehand and many lists have been changed to suit the readers. I don’t know any other site which is any more interactive and I’ll keep visiting it and recommending it for as long as it exists. =) This site is where I go for a big treat during my day. Thank you again, Jfray! =)
40. Alexandra - November 18th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
I think that this is so wrong to post this on here, I know that there are probably tons of these lists all over the internet, but posting these extensive list of details and the results of doing it wrong, it just doesn’t seem to be right.
I think that if you post these types of lists, kids are more likely to get their hands on them and find ways to do this to themselves.
41. Arisma - November 18th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Please don’t take this down. I can’t imagine anyone serious enough about suicide using *this* as their manual. (no offense)
I’ll never understand why people who are offended by something feel the need to a) seek out the subject and b) make pretend it doesn’t exist. Removing a bookmark and boycotting a site won’t make suicide any less a choice some make.
as to JJ’s comment about suicide in the face of certain death, I think it’s an intensely personal and private choice. I’m all for families having time to heal and grieve but I don’t think it should come at the price of ones own personal suffering. If you’re dying from, say, emphysema, no amount of drugs are going to keep you from feeling suffocated. And just the sheer mental toll of facing each day knowing you’re going to die and soon is more than some can stand. So no, while it’s not an option that should be taken by all, I think it’s an acceptable choice for some.
42. heavybison - November 19th, 2007 at 4:26 am
Are the pics for #6 and #8 real stuff? wow.
43. Davern - November 19th, 2007 at 4:39 am
JFrater: dont you often state, for example in the top 10 reasons not to make another movie list, that your not from the US. but in the preface you say, “In the US… we experience 11,000 self-inflicted deaths per year” if this is a mistake where is it that your from?
44. jfrater - November 19th, 2007 at 4:42 am
Davern: you are right - the list was contributed by an American.
45. Harsha - November 19th, 2007 at 4:58 am
I had heard about that part about slitting your wrist is more effective longitudinally rather than across.Anyway thanks for confirming it. Actually isn’t it also a way to get high!?
46. jfrater - November 19th, 2007 at 5:20 am
Harsha: I don’t think it is a way to get high - when a person cuts themselves, it is considered a form of self abuse by psychologists and a person deriving pleasure from it should seek therapeutic help immediately.
47. Tlmabp - November 19th, 2007 at 5:47 am
Hey I also agree Jfrater, you only put this type of thing just for curiosity, he is not expecting you all(including me) to actually commit suicide. if you do so, that would actually be your problem. Remember people this site is only intended for curiosity and entertainment. Jfrater dont listen to this people and keep up the good work.
48. Martin L - November 19th, 2007 at 6:17 am
This was a good list, and as an earlier poster said, contained nothing not already known to the general public worldwide. People think materials like this list are potentially harmful because suicide is such an enormous black door: no one who’s never contemplated it can understand what goes through the mind of one who is, and one who has will think, “But that was at a time in my life when my judgment wasn’t as good as now.” Suicide seems like something people of good will should be able to control — but there are so many reasons for so many people in so many states of mind, that there is no one-size-fits-all bandaid for the problem.
And now just to lighten the mood and go back to being a cheerful pain in the ass: in the Support section (a VERY good idea), your second sentence reads: “There is no problem so great that it can be resolved with time and care.” Don’t you want a “can’t” there? Especially since it IS kind of an important paragraph. (Yup, I’m an English major; used to edit a couple of small newspapers too, back in the day.)
49. jfrater - November 19th, 2007 at 6:30 am
Martin L: oops - thanks for that correction - it is now fixed.
Thanks to everyone for being so supportive in my decision to post this list.
50. Blogball - November 19th, 2007 at 11:04 am
I could see something like this appearing on PBS or another educational network. Plus as someone mentioned everyone is aware of these methods. It’s the order in which they are in that makes it interesting. It’s nice that you added the support section at the end. By the way I must have a warped sense of humor because at the end of the support section you added a notable omission. It just kind of struck me funny. Kind of like saying “oh and If none of these support groups or hot lines help you can always leap in front of a speeding object. (I told you I was warped)
51. jfrater - November 19th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Blogball: heh I can see how it might be seen in that way
I will change that when the server settles.
52. mandysparky - November 19th, 2007 at 10:33 pm
This list is extreamly inapropriat, you are basicaly telling depressed people that are suicidel all the methods they can under take to end their life! And saying that “suicide is never a solution” at the end with the lil support thing dose not justify putting up this list!
I normaly love this site but i find this list pathetic and suicidel people are just going to see this list and maybe even be inspired to hurt themselfs.
I know this because i use to be depressed and suicidle and this list would of most definatly inspired me to kill myself.
So think of that when ya sleep tonight.
53. cheese - November 20th, 2007 at 3:06 am
mandysparky: i understand your point of view, but i don’t think someone who is suicidal what look at this list as inspirational, merely educational. And if someone was suicidal, im sure that thought would have crossed their mind before.
great list jfrater, look forward to more.
54. euan - November 20th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
hey ive tried to kill myself 8 times and im ten!!!
55. Angelina - November 20th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Great list! I was just thinking the other day that this would be an interesting list to post. I love this website! Keep up the good work, jfrater!
56. jfrater - November 20th, 2007 at 1:25 pm
Angelina: Why thank you
57. Gravy - November 20th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Thats some crazy shit….
BTW LOVE THE SITE!!!
58. mooster - November 20th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
Believe me, as someone who has dealt with depression all of his life, there is nothing on this list that people don’t already know, if they’re interested.
Not the best of your lists, jfrater, but certainly nothing to apologize for!
59. mandysparky - November 21st, 2007 at 6:18 am
Cant this be called like 10 methods of death and take down the pictures? Cause the title and the pictures just add to the fantasy of hurting yourself..
The scientific explinations on what realy happends inside your body that results in death is great but i just dont belive that you have dealt with this sensitve subject the right way…
I know that depressed and suicidle people know how to kill them selfs, but you are listing all the different options and choices one could take.. i dont know how to explain it.. it just dosnt sit well with me and i hope the person who put up the list recognises it and understands.
60. Tlmabp - November 21st, 2007 at 6:34 am
mandysparky: as I said on my previusly comments jfrater only list this kind of thing for curiosity and entertainment porpuses.
if a person did wanted to kill him/herself it does’nt take a list to learn how to shoot, or stab him/herself, that is plain dumb.
61. jfrater - November 21st, 2007 at 6:43 am
Mandy: I appreciate what you are saying, but we make a point of not censoring on this site - and I think it would be wrong to change the list to obscure its original nature. Suicide is a taboo subject, but perhaps if it were more openly discussed it might lead to fewer deaths - pretending it isn’t there doesn’t help anyone. I should also add that I think this reaction seems to be mostly from Americans - I have not seen such a strong taboo against the topic in Britain or New Zealand. That is, of course, not a criticism - merely a sociological observation
62. iain - November 21st, 2007 at 9:33 am
jfrater, glad i stumbled apon this site after aimlessly surfing through loads of boring pish, love the openminded lists and the comments,i find it very interesting and educational, also had a good laugh reading some people’s comments completely taking things the wrong way getting offended and making complete twat of themselves, keep up the good work, il recommend this site to every surfer i know.
63. jfrater - November 21st, 2007 at 9:37 am
iain: thanks
It is very rewarding to see such a positive comment - especially after some of the ones on this list
64. Prozacsoldier - November 21st, 2007 at 12:04 pm
Woww a controversial issue with good comments and replies!
Well,I’m with you jamie, and can you give us a reply button?
65. Prozacsoldier - November 21st, 2007 at 12:06 pm
I forgot, it’s my nickname related with this list?
66. jfrater - November 21st, 2007 at 12:27 pm
Prozacsoldier: not intentionally - but indirectly yes
67. bob frenzy - November 21st, 2007 at 11:50 pm
it made me poot.
68. Clues - November 22nd, 2007 at 6:11 am
I’m a youth counselor at a residential treatment center for adolescent teens with emotional and behavioral problems. Unfortunately almost all of my clients know theses 10 and possibility a dozen or more ways to end an unwanted life. I do NOT think that having a top 10 list on the internet is going to swing a persons’ decision one way or another.
That being said:
What does concern me are some of the comments about “cutting”. Attention seeking individuals such as the increasingly popular self harmers or “Emo” find sites like this comforting, because they think they have found acceptance. The more the media glamorizes this kind of behavior the more appealing it will become.
***The madness of the crowd is intoxicating.***
J- I think you have classed up suicide as much as you can and once again did a good job of being very diplomatic. I believe most of the readers knew what they were getting in to when they clicked on the link. I would recommend to the more light hearted readers the humor section it is quiet entertaining.

Clues: thank you for an excellent comment - it is very good to hear from an expert on the subject at last! Also, regarding cutting, in comment 46 I mentioned it though only briefly.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been wanting to end my life for a while and I now have the tools to carry it through.
72. Tyler Niccum - November 25th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Years ago, back when I was in high school (1999-2003), there was a crazed suicide rush going on. For about a year, there were at least 15 attempted suicides at my school, three personal friends of mine were successful. Once, I walked out of my homeroom mobile unit, to find a young girl hanging herself from the tree…I held onto her screaming for bloody help…she lived, fortunately. Another experience, a close friend of mine, called me one night, late and talked to me about life. After an hour on the phone, I found out the next day that she had killed herself…i never knew…
So, I’m not offended by this list, in fact, I appreciate it. People need to know that, suicide is not the answer for anything…and if they are considering it, please at least talk about it with someone beforehand and then make your decision….its your decision….but its not the only one.
73. Jumbo - November 26th, 2007 at 8:24 am
This site really helped me think of ways to kill myself. i give my thanks to the webmaster. BYE BYE planet earth. Ill one day see u all in a new life
74. jfrater - November 26th, 2007 at 8:28 am
Jumbo: are you being funny or stupid? I can ask the same of June Frise too!
Tyler Niccum: I am very sorry for your loss and for having had those experiences - how terribly traumatic it must have been for you! And I think it makes the comments like 73 and 71 even the more despicable.
75. SnowKid32 - November 28th, 2007 at 8:27 pm
That scared the shit out of me, and sadly, I think this will effect someone, not now, but much later in their life.

77. meh - November 29th, 2007 at 4:25 am
I have a fraternity brother that swallowed both barrels of a double barrel 12 gauge. He missed! Blew his face off. After years and years of reconstructive surgeries you can still tell. Nicest guy in the world too.
There certainly are valid reasons for suicide. It’s a personal choice. I think about it often. I was in an accident and considerable damage was done. I am 34 with a college education and ten years experience in my field. At the same time I was getting out of the hospital, after months in several hospitals and an old folks home, I got divorced - and not by my choice either. Now I live with my parents because I spent my entire life savings and retirement on medical bills after I got fired from my job two months after my divorce. I spent those several months going to rehab every day learning how to walk again. Now, because I have no money and because disability takes years I lie flat on my back in bed in pain every day. I have no friends locally and no means to visit anyone. All in all it’s a pretty shitty situation and a pain filled existence. Yes I think about killing myself almost every day. Haven’t done it yet. Thing is I WAS ALREADY DEAD when the paramedics found me. They, literally, flipped a coin and pumped me full of experimental fake blood as I had bled out (blood pressure as zero-pulse zero). They brought me back. Great - now I have to live in pain, broke, broken hearted and alone. Fun stuff y’all.
Is my situation reason enough? I don’t know but sometimes I think so. I read above “they can give you pain killer”. ONLY IF YOU HAVE MONEY OR INSURANCE, of which I have neither.

Minsa: judging from your IP address and name, I am guessing you are in India. Here are two telephone numbers in Bangalore for Samaritans: 23092068 / 23021071 - ring one of those telephone numbers and talk to the people there - they will be able to help you right now.
79. jfrater - November 29th, 2007 at 4:31 am
meh: I am very sorry to hear about your situation - I can’t even imagine what that must be like. I wonder if you tell us your city, whether someone on this site might be able to help you out somehow - even if just by visiting and chatting.

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
The Samaritans UK
Additionally, here are some numbers to call:
United States: 1-800-273-TALK (National Suicide Prevention Hotline)
United States (Spanish): 1-888-628-9454
United Kingdom: 08457 90 90 90 (Samaritans)
Republic of Ireland: 1850 60 90 90 (Samaritans)
the above info. taken off this post by scrolling down to the bottom of the list. also..you can check your local telephone directory for area suicide hotlines. or contact the nearest hospital for local help. there are any number of ways to find help w/ depression or suicidal thoughts locally.
that said…
personally…which means i am speaking for myself not listverse or anyone else…
people who post ‘emo’like comments to a post on a site designed for entertainment should seek professional help. obviously you have some issues that a counselor could help you with. it is your responsibility to pursue professional help if you’re still capable of writing a coherent response on a entertainment site post. for those people that are not coherent enough to pursue professional intervention…then it is left up to those around them to help. so if you happen to know people who post similar comments…have a talk w/ them. guide them towards professional counseling. most if not all college campuses have health clinics..so take a walk w/ them to the clinic. or make some phone calls for them. be supportive. and if it is extreme…then contact authorities yourself to get help for your friend.
i understand that sometimes people say appropriate things in inappropriate places…it is a kind of ‘cry for help’. well, then get the help you so obviously need. or help your friend find the help they need.
again…this is my personal opinion. i just have a real problem w/ people posting such attention grabbing comments on an entertainment site. if you need help…Google suicide intervention not ‘lists’. to me…these kinds of comments trivialize and minimize (in the minds of the general usually uneducated public) the deadly seriousness of depression and suicidal thinking or contemplation. suicide is no joke. nor is depression. depression is a life threatening disease that requires professional assessment and treatment. as for the list itself..the first time i read it..i had no problems w/ it. and i still think it is a fine list. it is the comments i take issue w/. *sigh* i dunno. maybe someone will find this educational. i hope so. keep in mind there are huge differences in posting something online about suicide, making attention grabbing comments and the actual disease of depression and the horrendous consequences of suicide. /steps off soap box

96. Brian Moo - December 6th, 2007 at 11:11 pm
Whoah whoah, I can’t tell if some of these people are serious about going to commit suicide or are just joking.
As it said on the bottom of the page:

Brian Moo: I can’t tell either - some have been obvious attempts by people that are angry I put this list here to make me feel guilty and remove it - and I won’t. The fact that I have told people underneath each item what the consequences are when it goes wrong - and so often it does, coupled with the numbers at the bottom which you quoted, makes this a list not intended to help people do it, but to help them realize they shouldn’t.

i think this is a great website. why are you people saying that it shouldnt be up here? it could be helping someone out. kinda like me. and i mean come on..you kno wat the title of this was so you knew wat it was going to be about. so why are you people bitching?

101. Hn.. - December 12th, 2007 at 2:21 am
it’s funny to think that most of you people are concerned about complete strangers and what they do with their lives…
There will always be people committing suicide as long as there’s pain in the world..and frankly neither of these would ever be gone…
Live with it….
or rather don’t….
(don’t take this too seriously…frankly, i don’t know of my opinion on the matter…just think of this as a stray thought…)>:)

103. Does’nt matter - December 12th, 2007 at 10:07 pm
when i was 15 i tried and came extreamly close to dieing due to drug poisoning (im 16 now) my points of life have changed since than dont get me wrong im not going to do anything remotly close to it again, but i still dont see a point in life and i think its quite dumb to carry on a pointless life. having no one in your life, no parents no friends just a job stuck in a adouption home sneaking on the computer to find life. trust me, you dont want to see the next day. this site needs more than ways to kill yourself, it needs solutions as well.
104. Cyn - December 12th, 2007 at 10:49 pm
doesn’t matter:
this site is intended for entertainment purposes only. a place of lists that generate discussion.
there has never been an indication on this site or in this list that suicide was a viable option…far from it. there is plenty of information about preventing suicide as well as getting local help in this particular list. as well as endless info online to provide aid and comfort to those actively considering suicide. there is usually help available locally..i know there is in America. anyone can call the nearest hospital for local help. or contact the nearest church. if someone is serious about suicide…then they need to seek professional help immediately.
~quote~this site needs more than ways to kill yourself, it needs solutions as well~/quote~
please re read this list more carefully..in particular the header and footer. and you’ll find there is info there…even though it is certainly not expected on a site such as this.
if you are indeed a minor in the care of an ‘adoption home’..you should talk w/ the adults in charge about getting you the professional help you need.
posting a comment on a site like this..is not it.
get offline. ask an adult for help. get into therapy. you can save your own life.
just ask for help.

the preceding is copy of the footer of this list. as much discussion as this list has generated….
i see this as public service. a means of generating discussion. providing information.
it saddens me to no end that it has also been used as some kinda ‘emo’ ploy.
this is a list. simply a list. the fact that contact info has also been included…well, you’d not see that kind of consideration elsewhere.
i guess it comes w/ the territory of cyberspace that people will use things for purposes other than they were intended.
just keep in mind…suicide is a deadly serious issue. it is best handled by professionals.
personally…
i don’t have a problem w/ this list being here. i hope J leaves it be. i do think its got some folks rethinking the seriousness of this issue. and in a positive way.
i just think if someone is of sound enough mind to gain internet access and post a comment here…then they are of sound enough mind to seek the professional help they so desperately need.
as for anyone else …i think this could be the kind of exposure they need to fully appreciate the seriousness of suicide and i hope it will make them more compassionate towards people that are depressed and/or suicidal. should they ever be confronted w/ this issue …now they know there is help available and that they have something to offer someone they know in need.
106. Clues - December 13th, 2007 at 2:02 am
Excellent Cyn!
I would wager that most of the “thank you now I can go kill myself “responders are just looking to get either a point across to -J- or are trying to get some attention.
Anyone that thinks a community of anonymous strangers could help anonymous readers decide to kill themselves is being fooled. It is ludicrous. We as fans of this site are not internet therapists that are able to diagnosis a problem let alone treat it.
So if you are looking for help you need to look somewhere else. I believe this site has given a wealth of information on where to start. If you are just out to get attention you may need some therapy as well.
-J- You are very brave to tackle such a taboo subject. I’m glad you are sticking to your guns!
107. Cyn - December 13th, 2007 at 3:01 am
thanks Clues.
i’ve always found this site to be as informative and educational as it is entertaining. controversy is a good way of opening your mind to new ways of thinking too. i fully appreciate what J is doing here and i will continue to support his keeping this particular list up.

110. Marjorie - March 16th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
I would describe myself as suicidal from time to time. Right now for example, which is why I googled suicide methods. A list like this is not going to change how I feel about it, and I’m glad its up because there is too much taboo on the subject.
I don’t think many people call those helplines. However, the pictures and consequences bit are very poignant and really make you think about the reality of things.
It seems we actually don’t die very easily. The amount of blood you need to lose and pills you need to take to finish yourself off means that half-hearted attempts simply won’t work.
Thankyou for posting this list. I think it is phrased brilliantly.
(also, wrt the comment on ’stupid people’: jog on. You know absolutely nothing about depression.)

~suicide is not temporary solution to permanent problems, but it is permanent solution to all of your temporary problems~
113. SlickWilly - March 17th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Suicide is not a solution to anything. It is the most selfish, self-serving, egotistical act a person can perform. Anyone who has witnessed the aftermath of the family of a suicide victim knows that killing yourself is to eternally cripple the lives of those closest to you. You don’t just hurt yourself when you commit suicide; you hurt all the people who ever loved you, cared about you, and gave you the most reason to live. For those people to go completely out of their way to try to help you simply because they love you, and for you to turn around and essentially tell them “Fuck you,” that is creating more problems than you had before. Only now, your problems don’t go away, they just get dumped on those closest to you.
114. jfrater - March 17th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Wow - I thought I could safely re-open the comments on this list - obviously I was wrong. I am now closing them again.
Thanks SlickWilly for your intelligent comment - if more people commented like that I would leave the comments open on this list.
115. Dave - September 7th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
People, there are some interesting comments on here.
I’m 35 years old, and I live in Northern Ireland with my four month old son. My wife suffered severe post natal illness after the birth of our child and killed herself before our son was even 2 weeks old.
The pain that’s left behind I can’t describe. No words will ever describe it. Not only do I miss my wife terribly, but I wonder how I’m going to bring up my son without his mother. Every child needs a mother. I wish she were here every day, he’s grown so much in that time.
For her, yes, it was a permanent solution to a temporary problem, because if she were here now, she would love him as much as i do.
Please think about what you are doing to yourself and the ones you leave behind. There is always help available. Whichever country you are in, there will be help available in your local area. Please think twice, both for yourself and the people you love.
Dave
