Top 10 Most Controversial Websites
Published on October 2, 2008 - 139 Comments
I have not compiled this list to upset anyone or promote these sites. Most of these sites have already been profiled in the mainstream media, often noting their involvement in tragic cases. I have listed the links to some sites, but it will be up to Jamie whether to include them or not [JFrater: I have decided to provide links to them]. I can’t decide what would be better, to link to the site so you can all make up your own mind or to not link to the site so as not to even appear to promote them. I will describe some of the sites in generalities instead of naming specific ones because there is oftentimes more than one for each topic.

The Pirate Bay is a website for sharing and locating torrent files (special plain text files) that allow you to download movies, software, and music legally and illegally. There have been numerous attempts to shut the site down but as it is just serving text files and not the actual illegal data, these attempts have failed. The site is based in Sweden. [Website]

Ogrish.com was a shock site which presented uncensored news coverage and multimedia material based for the most part on war, accidents and executions. Much of the material depicted was graphic, uncensored, gory videos and images. The content was depicted as a means to challenge the viewer, with its catch line being ‘Can you handle life’, but later changed to ‘Uncover Reality’ after the site received a major design overhaul with aims of becoming more open to the general public and become a respected ‘alternative news service’. [Wikipedia | Website]
Rotten.com is a United States-hosted shock site with a slogan of “An archive of disturbing illustration” operated by Soylent Communications. It is devoted to morbid curiosities, primarily pictures of gruesome fatalities, deformities, autopsy or forensic photographs, depictions of perverse sex acts, and historical curios that are disturbing or misanthropic in nature. The site was founded in 1996, and its format has changed very little since that time.
First, there were Bumfights videos, then there were gang fights and now we have kids fighting and recording their fights to post online. Sadly, some of the participants are either unwilling or unaware of what is going on. [Website]
There is a movement to legalize and encourage consensual sexual relationships between adults and “consenting” minors. They have gained legitimacy in recent years and have garnered support from the likes of Allen Ginsberg. The most prominent of these sites (NAMBLA) has been parodied in South Park and other comedy movies. [Website]
Some murderabelia is simply murder-related, while some is created by actual murderers. Some states in the US have enacted Son of Sam laws where killers are not allowed to profit from their crimes, but these laws are often stricken down as unconstitutional. [Website]
I personally am not troubled by learning about serial killers, but some people take it a little far. From calendars to trading cards, there is an entire community seemingly obsessed with all things serial killer related. [Website]
What makes this controversial is how it might impact the victim’s families. While these pictures are often in the public domain, others are leaked or stolen from police files. I remember seeing a story on a news magazine show about a family being tormented by someone constantly emailing them pictures of the scene of their daughter’s fatal car accident. [Website]

Apparently some people think it’s a good idea to encourage people who are suffering from depression to consider suicide as an option, or at least encourage them to not rule it out. To me this seems incredibly cruel. [Website]
There are websites dedicated to legitimizing lifestyles centered on anorexia and bulimia. These sites provide tips and tricks for hiding your disorder as well as “thinspiration” pictures of skinny people, often celebrities. Governments all over the world are cracking down on these sites, but they are still out there and there is a movement to support their right to exist. [Website]

Hmm… interesting list. I’m not really in favour of the pro-anorexia, suicide, or pedophilia sites, but then again, what about free speech?
2. jadie - October 5th, 2008 at 1:21 am
1st to comment!!
3. jck1074 - October 5th, 2008 at 1:23 am
what about goatse? tho maybe it could fall under 9 or 8 as those are disgusting i guess.
4. jck1074 - October 5th, 2008 at 1:23 am
oh and great list!
5. astraya - October 5th, 2008 at 1:47 am
I read through the whole list without thinking “This is rushfan”! (I’ve just woken up from an afternoon nap).
Like the disturbing novels list, I have visited none of these sites, and am unlikely to.
6. Trigun472 - October 5th, 2008 at 1:58 am
Nice list. Some interesting sites, thanks for giving me something to check out.
7. Nikki - October 5th, 2008 at 2:07 am
I would say that pro-ana sites are not as bad as telling ill or sane people how to kill themselves, or the crime photos site.
8. jajdude - October 5th, 2008 at 2:16 am
mad guns on the list g - this’ll keep me occupied fo a long time fo sho.
9. avie - October 5th, 2008 at 2:42 am
interestin”the first one–pro an.–whoa not cool
10. Star - October 5th, 2008 at 2:49 am
Nice list
11. genesis105 - October 5th, 2008 at 2:51 am
snuffx should definitely be on this list.
12. storm_shadow - October 5th, 2008 at 3:10 am
I used to be a member o a pro-ana site, and trust they deserve to be on this list. They suck you further and further into your disorder until you really believe you are doing something pure and cleansing by starving yourself.
One of these I definitely won’t be visiting is rotton.com. Sounds horrible!
13. Anon - October 5th, 2008 at 3:38 am
Surprised none of the chans are on this list.
14. JayBe - October 5th, 2008 at 3:58 am
what about listverse? XD
Is The Pirate Bay the only website performing that? or is just an example? I exepted some website about hacking also. And what about that one?
http://polaris.moviments.net:8000/
Is from a guy that robbed few thousands to the banks and he tells how to do it.
15. wickeddavis - October 5th, 2008 at 4:00 am
i went to school with a kid who was obsessed with a site called cannibalmedia.com. the site was taken down as far as i know, but it was the goriest and most gruesome collection of murder scenes and such that i ever saw. also, i love the cassette skull-and-crossbones on the pirate bay ship, it was also used in devo’s “time out for fun” music video!
16. Shabab - October 5th, 2008 at 4:03 am
How did 4chan not make it? /b/ is all of the 10 items rolled into one.
17. romerozombie - October 5th, 2008 at 4:10 am
Rotten doesn’t seem to have been updated in years. The content still seems the same as it was years ago… maybe you have to dig deeper. Urgh.
Interesting list.
18. Rosirob - October 5th, 2008 at 4:26 am
Mustn’t go to rotten.com …
Mustn’t …
Curiosity … to … much …
NOOOO!
19. nubyw00tz - October 5th, 2008 at 4:28 am
Hannah, somebody’s right to be safe overrules freedom of speech.
20. JOHNY - October 5th, 2008 at 4:49 am
I’m sorry, but i think you should’ve added 4chan as a bonus. It’s not exactly a shock website, but i think it deserves a slot for being controversial.
21. Scar - October 5th, 2008 at 4:50 am
Rotten should be number 1..
Anyone who has spent more then 5 minutes on that sight can agree..
The pictures on there are disgusting.
22. Scar - October 5th, 2008 at 4:59 am
romerozombie- I go on that site sometimes..
I know shame shame.
But I really do go on that site to check for updates..
I recall those “new” photographs being put up a few months ago, but nothing new from then on.
23. romerozombie - October 5th, 2008 at 5:25 am
What’s 4chan? There’s no way I’m typing it into my browser!
Scar - Rotten is like a hideous car wreck - you just can’t help but craning your neck to get a good look at it! I think an interest in the morbid and disturbing can be quite healthy. Eli Roth’s dad is a professor at Harvard, and he thinks his son is fine.
But that’s a whole other debate. Maybe a Your view topic - do horror films go too far, or something along those lines?
24. romerozombie - October 5th, 2008 at 5:37 am
I quite fancy a set of serial killer trading cards for Xmas. I like unigue gifts.
25. Tony - October 5th, 2008 at 5:38 am
Um, where is 4chan - - or any of the other chans?
This list is full of fail.
26. nubyw00tz - October 5th, 2008 at 5:41 am
There are more chans? I thought there was only 4chan.
Back on BNet people always talked about /b/, telling the tales of evil of it.
27. astraya - October 5th, 2008 at 5:52 am
There was a week in which every list added 10 more things to my list of things to do: epic poems, Shakespeare plays etc. In the last week, we’ve had disturbing novels, professional wrestlers, bizarre food and controversial websites, which (fortunately) adds nothing to my list.
28. MarK - October 5th, 2008 at 6:10 am
never knew nambla was real lol
29. Ryan - October 5th, 2008 at 6:19 am
I was expecting to see Wikileaks there. http://wikileaks.org/wiki/Main_Page
Most of the material they post is stolen.
30. Ghidoran - October 5th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Pirate Bay - I’ve done that.
31. smurff - October 5th, 2008 at 6:32 am
Good list again - but not no. 6
32. Kreachure - October 5th, 2008 at 6:39 am
Um, so anorexia is worse than pedophilia? I don’t get it…
33. Kreachure - October 5th, 2008 at 6:49 am
4chan is from where most internet memes come from.
It’s simply an “imageboard”, where users can post images and comment on them. There are several sections of the site, and only a few of these allow objectionable content. So, compared to these other sites, it’s quite innocent.
But crazy. Oh so very crazy.
(There have been just a couple of pseudo-controversies because a few users have posted “terrorist” threats, but come on…)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4chan
34. Nikki - October 5th, 2008 at 6:57 am
I am a recovered anorexic and used to have a ‘pro ana’ site. It was a good way to make friends but ultimately the sites encouraged me to get better. One day I looked at them and thought ‘how pathetic am I being? There’s more to life than this’. So in a roundabout way they can be good, for some people anyway.
35. Jrodickens - October 5th, 2008 at 7:09 am
I respect the fact you guys had the guts to do this list. I do not believe you are personally supporting these sites however this is good publicity for them. I think leaving the links off for some, such as nambla, would have been appropriate and anyone who was interested enough could go find them on their own. Cool list tho keep up the good work.
36. MT - October 5th, 2008 at 7:15 am
Another fascinating list. I have visited some of these sites already. With the exception of #6 I will now visit the others.
37. JOHNY - October 5th, 2008 at 7:18 am
Indeed Kreachure, but “crazy” for some is “controversial” for others (i’m on the “crazy” side, by the way)
38. John - October 5th, 2008 at 7:30 am
There are limits to free speech. Some of these sites, if tested in US courts, might be found to violate free speech in that they bring harm to others. Any judges or lawyers out there who might want to chime in on this?
39. deepthinker - October 5th, 2008 at 7:37 am
Neat list. If weird people want to look at these sites, that is their business, but I know myself too well to know how things disturb me. The only one I think people should rally against would be the pedophilia ones… sick. Nambla is truly disturbing. They should not be glorifying their mental problems, they should realize that their obsessions are wrong, and they should get psychiatric help- they shouldn’t be promoting the destruction of young lives, by fulfilling their perversions.
40. Cambrexia101 - October 5th, 2008 at 8:31 am
These sound awful.
Except for Pirate Bay,
which I go to at least once a week.
Oh, and I personally don’t believe suicide is that big a deal;
if there’s nothing to live for, why not die?
At the same time, though, it should be up to the person and nobody else should try to make up their mind for them, which in my mind, includes websites.
I’m honestly surprised that people in the comments sound curious about rotten.com. Sounds fairly traumatizing to me.
I would never go to any of these sites other than Pirate Bay, which isn’t really in league with the rest.
41. lizze - October 5th, 2008 at 8:31 am
Oh wow. I just looked at rotten and i have to say that motorcycle suicide man pic is sick.
All in all, though, i think the worst website is nambla and maybe the ones like it. Its the only one that actually encourages ruining peoples lives, who don’t want them ruined in the first place. Those people need help.
42. manditaaknfv - October 5th, 2008 at 8:43 am
piratebay rocks!
43. segue - October 5th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Uh…well…yes.
I checked out various of the websites, more or less at random, and…I’m… flummoxed!
What kind of people (using the word in it’s widest sense of the definition only) support these sites?
Pedophilia?
Murderabelia
Rotten.com, When Hell is Full the Dead Will Walk the Earth. Pure Evil Since 1996?
Ogrish.com?
These are not the kind of people I want to know. These are not the kind of people I want to have in power positions of any kind.
These are not just sick people, but dangerous people.
There’s an enormous difference between pirating music or supporting anorexia and *EVERYTHING* else on this list.
Everything else is dangerous to the point of illegality. While they might all be covered by the First Amendment, what is done with them, and what is done to produce them, is *NOT*!
Why do people forget that part of the equation?
44. Rayfield - October 5th, 2008 at 9:07 am
Those sites are twisted. I hope that some innocent soul won’t go wandering onto these sites and have their souls corrupted…
45. pitye - October 5th, 2008 at 9:15 am
Sorry to say, but I’ve been to some of these.
I also saw a forum called like Bareback or something where men purposely have sex with other men to give them HIV. Something like that. I thought that was pretty effed up. D:
46. Mom424 - October 5th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Segue: What no love for rotten.com? Sorry but they have an excellent news page. Much like fark but easier to navigate; in fact the link is on my task bar. I suggest you try the daily rotten news links. And as for the rest of it; I don’t click on the rotten links to death photos and the like. There is some fascinating historical links though, worth the risk Segue. (Check out the stereoscopic disease page or the ancient porn link).
Some of these other links I find disturbing. How can pro pedophilia be legal? I’m all for free speech but not at the expense of children. There are laws about inciting riot, what about inciting pedophilia? I don’t get it.
47. DK - October 5th, 2008 at 9:30 am
I was wondering if the suicide assistance website would be listed, I recall an episode of Law & Order (special victims I think) about this subject, I think it’s just terrible. I’ve visited Rotten.com before, it’s pretty gross.
48. segue - October 5th, 2008 at 9:35 am
46. Mom424, I use Slate and Onion news sites.
49. The_Patient - October 5th, 2008 at 9:35 am
A friend recommended Rotten.com to me 4years ago (So I was 14) thinking they meant haha funny, I had a look. Its not funny, its sick. Looking at the picture of a little girl just after an autopsy, isnt funny. Yeah, Im interested in the darker side of life, so I read sick fictional books, (thats where listverse’ “most disturbing novels” comes in handy)
Ive never been on the other sites, and I dont plan to!
Although the anorexia site I think should be no.10 or 9. HOw is it worse than peadophillia?! That should be no.1
The fight thing is wrong to, well, when it involves unaware participants, but Im sure that site was thriving during the whole happy slappy whim here in the U.k!
50. Tj - October 5th, 2008 at 9:56 am
are you kidding me? 4chan.com’s /b/ board is not on here? maybe thats for the best, /b/ does hate newcomers to the site. But it is the cesspool of the Internet and downright worse than any of these other posh sites.
51. Tj - October 5th, 2008 at 10:01 am
*4chan.org
my mistake, and after reading up I noticed I’m not the only one to mention it in less than 50 comments.
An hero
52. Sherri - October 5th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Many years ago there was a talk show here in Canada called the Jenny Jones Show, and she had on a bunch of NAMBLA pervs. Their lawyer was a woman, and when an audience member asked if she would allow her own son to be a ‘consenting’ minor, she said she would if he wanted to. She had no kids at the time, and I remember thinking that her opinion might change after she became a parent. I also remember thinking that all of those men should be shot with a ball of their own shit.
53. postman - October 5th, 2008 at 10:57 am
I thought that NAMBLA was a joke from South Park [url=http://www.mysmiley.net/free-unhappy-smileys.php][img]http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/confused/confused0058.gif[/img][/url]
54. Mangawitch - October 5th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Ogrish has moved on since the old days and become the very respectable site liveleak.com.
Excellent news site and nothing like the old ogrish, although a lot of the old members still remain.
55. postman - October 5th, 2008 at 10:59 am
I thought that NAMBLA was a joke from South Park.
I also thought that Consumption Junction would be on the list.
56. debaser - October 5th, 2008 at 11:01 am
rotten.com - dont make me larf ogrish was and still is the daddy, the forum is still going strong you would be suprised at the sort of people you get on there - doctors - Lawyer’s all sorts of normal professionals
57. nina_beretta - October 5th, 2008 at 11:09 am
how about a list of the top ten bullshit lists?
58. Lani - October 5th, 2008 at 11:14 am
No Bonsai Kittens?
59. kowzilla - October 5th, 2008 at 11:14 am
I was really expecting to see 4chan on here.
Goodnight Sweet Prince.
60. niceface - October 5th, 2008 at 11:15 am
i always thought http://www.godhatesfags.com was the worst
61. Brad - October 5th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Whoever emailed that girl’s family the pictures of her car accident should be shot in the head.
62. malfore - October 5th, 2008 at 11:26 am
I would gladly suicide bomb a NAMBLA meeting….run screaming into a meeting “PREPARE TO BE RAPED WITH A PITCHFORK PERVERTS! BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
The only thing on here that truly disturbs me is NAMBLA, as it is the only one that to me, is truly evil.
63. Kelsi - October 5th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Last time I checked, it was the WORLD wide web, and freedom of speech is in no way protected on the internet, it just seems that way since most users can post whatever the hell they want faster than anyone can take it down.
64. JUNQUEMAN - October 5th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
I’d guess OSHAMA’S-OOPS-OBAMA’S WEB SITE WOULD BE NUMBER ONE.
65. anthony p - October 5th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Only ever been to rotten.com the an possibly nambla because i couldnt believe it existed.
66. nina_beretta - October 5th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
whoever needs a website on tips how to kill yourself shouldnt be alive anyway…okay okay pretty harsh but for reals…how do you not know ways to do yourself in?? Why do you need others to encourage you if cant get others to make you feel happy? Doesnt make sense…
67. Dr. Byegones Jah Knees - October 5th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Confession:
The Dr. used to work, day apon day, in a job that the Dr. HATED.
The Dr. did little things to make his time somewhat agreeable.
Sone days the Dr., along with his co-conspirator..I mean, co-worker, would log onto NAMBLA. The reason was not because the Dr. or the Co-worker liked little boys. The reason was to load a certain computer with problematic info.
The Dr. and the co-worker did this on the BOSS’S computer, when the BOSS was far far away.
We must of had ECHELON satelltes turn our direction high above this fine Earth..
68. dont need to know - October 5th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
what about infowars or prison planet
69. Metalwrath - October 5th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I remember, as a teenager, I’d visit ogrish cause it was gory… I haven’t gone for a while but I might check it out again to see whats going on there…
Interesting list, I might check out some of those.. but I will never visit the NAMBLA one for sure, nor the anorexia or suicide sites which don’t interest me. The others aren’t so hardcore in my opinion.
70. Riya B. - October 5th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Wow,nice list. I checked out rotten.com, and it’s okay, i guess. Thanks for giving me something to look up, although I probably will skip the pedophilia and anorexia sites.
Rayfield~ then it’s too late for me already…
71. Corey - October 5th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Some commenters are overreacting a bit to things like rotten.com. I used to go there quite a bit when I was only about 12 or 13. It’s fascinating; it doesn’t make me sick. I’d always planned to be a surgeon and I’m in medical school now, so why should it be sick to look at graphic pictures?
I was expecting godhatesfags on here, as well as http://www.menarebetterthanwomen.com/
72. dunfire - October 5th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
I have very mixed feelings regarding these types of websites. First of all
I do not feel that any censorship of these sites should be done. Everyone should
Make up their own mind as to whether or not these sites in fact provide any real genuine information that is of any use to anyone.
I have spent a career as a fire arson investigator having to deal with horrific crimes involving the murder of innocent adults and children in criminal activity and unfortunately having a homicide committed to a close family relative few years ago. Seeing the results of these crimes both from a professional point of view and a personnel point of view, let me state that these are not something that I ever wish to ever experience ever again and I hope that most of the readers of this website never experience as well. It is one thing to see these horrible images from a distance of the internet and quite another when involved at a level that I had to be at.
73. jhoyce07 - October 5th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
i often visit rotten.com and my father (before) always visits ogrish.com..really gruesome..harrr…
74. goof_ball - October 5th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
isnt myspace controversial?
75. Lizzyxo - October 5th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
All of you saying that the suicide page is ok because if you are so depressed you want to find a way to die should, have obviously never lost a friend due to suicide. Imagine walking in on a good friend after he/she found that site. Trust me, that kind of site, is NOT ok.
76. Kyran Wray - October 5th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
brilliant list, i hate to think how you found all these sites…
77. Spinner - October 5th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
I once asked a couple of psychiatrists why some people would regularly look at photos of death scenes and the like, and their answer was that these people lack empathy.
Personally, I think that’s an important thing to remember because lacking empathy is a significant element of antisocial behaviours ( hello murder, rape etc). No thanks.
Yeah yucky list… but then I guess it was never designed for the feel good factor!
78. MEG - October 5th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Crime Scene Photos needs to be shut down! This is a truly gruesome site, especially the Dahmer case. He was just psycho!!
79. cheesedrummer - October 5th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
what about the godhatesfags.com westboro baptist church site?
80. malfore - October 5th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Theres also a NAMBLA type webpage I’ve heard of, promoting sex between women/girls…Sorry I keep talking about that crap, but I seriously think child predators deserve the deepest levels of hell, and I’m an atheist.
ANYWAY- The whole thing of the suicide page is just bent…if you are depressed to the point that you are thinking of suicide, you can be influenced by a site like that into acting it out.
JUNQUEMAN- If you’re going to spread rightwing elitist lies, at least spell correctly…its OSAMA. Obamas not muslum, fyi
81. jasontimmer - October 5th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
how about the church of euthanasia website and their video glorifying 9/11?
82. Mandie - October 5th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
First of all, I do not believe general curiosity in one’s mortality does not an unsympathetic person make.
Second, bangedup.com is possibly the most…unorthodox websites I have been to.
Not for the faint of heart.
83. Andrewsarchus - October 5th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Well I take issue with the
thinspiration sites you shouldn’t starve yourself or throw up because you “don’t like the way you look” Girls (and guys) are supposed to have weight on them. Your body depends far less on your diet and much more on your activity level…
(even though I am a 20 year old male and am 5′8″ I weigh 114lbs … because I can’t afford to eat the necessary calories so I’m suffering from “economic starvation” and hyper-high metabolism (food is expensive I have a labor intensive job.) my calorie intake should be around 4000-5000 a day I rarely get 2000 a day.
Umm… I’ve been suicidal and still am depressed; unless you are drafted to iraq and are decapitated from the waste down by an IED suicide is not the option.
Because you have nothing to live for is an exact reason to live. I still exist because I have yet to find something (or someone) worth living for.
… The Nambla thing pedophilia=BAD
But I support doing away with statutory rape for 16/17 year olds (up to the point where their partners are 20/21 which seems reasonable to me … once you’re into college high school kids are really out of your age range. But a HIGH SCHOOL senior/sophmore or senior/junior could vary easily be “illegal”.
A 16 year old girl could have sex with a hundred different 17 year old “boys”… but the minute she has sex with one 18 year old “adult” he could go to jail and be labeled a sex offender… which doesn’t seem right to me.
The rest don’t bother me…
If you don’t like a particular site don’t visit it … The other sites on the list are mostly visually offensive and if you’re against free stuff (legality aside) don’t bother with the pirate bay
84. Tenebrae - October 5th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Is digusting really controversial? I agree that the NAMBLA, pro-ana, pro-suicide and piracy sites may be controversial. The rest are just shocking or repugnant.
You want controversial (and absolutely apalling) try Stormfront.org. It is THE most famous “White Power” site around - includes lovely topics about how the holocaust didn’t happen, etc. It is, undoubtedly, controversial. I went there once for a paper..
just.. wow.. :/
85. Panic! - October 5th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
I don’t understand why everyone has such a big problem with websites with gory/graphic images. Just… Don’t go to them, and leave them for the people who enjoy them. They have every right in the world to have those websites up.
And the whole anorexia thing is, for lack of a better word, pathetic. “Let’s take a mental disorder and make it okay by forming a large group!” Kind of reminds me of religion…. Ha ha (I is sorry Bible-monkeys, please don’t sick Jesus on me ;] ). But again, freedom of speech. I think that’s something that’s on you, and that you’ve kind of got to snap yourself out of it. Plus, I would imagine you need a lot of positive feedback to be able to keep telling yourself that that fragile, sickly body of yours is sexy.
Suicide promotion? Really? Someone needs a hobby…. But maybe the people who listen when websites tell them to kill themselves are better off dead anyway? Let’s ponder that for a bit…
NAMBLA is pretty fucked up. Like… Yeah, they shouldn’t be proud of being into kids, that’s the kind of thing you get help for… And I’ll never be the one to censor someone to a “socially acceptable” level, but honestly, they’re children, and that is NOT okay…
86. Bex - October 5th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
I used to go to rotten.com when I was younger, but I can’t handle it now
87. Saint Splattergut - October 5th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
But Ogrish is gone!
Nice list nonetheless. To know all of them is to have braved the Internets.
88. Blogball - October 5th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Nice list rushfan. I wish some of these web sites wouldn’t exist but if they were not permitted to exist I know that would even be worse.
89. Nejikun - October 5th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
I’ve sometimes surfed the 4chan board. When I heard there were different ones, I stumbled across 12chan… Not cool.
90. sharlu - October 5th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
i used to go onto rotten.com when i was younger too . . but 4chan should definately be on this list! it’s soooo controversial . . but I must admit its slightly entertaining . . sometimes
91. debaser - October 6th, 2008 at 12:05 am
ogrish forum is still thriving Saint Splattergut
92. Sunshine - October 6th, 2008 at 1:13 am
I used to frequent Ogrish. Nice little website.
93. jajdude - October 6th, 2008 at 1:45 am
That serial killers site is not so strange, except for the things some people collect. The crime library website, which I found once through this site, has all kinds of dark info too. Many people are understandingly fascinated with these abominations, and many books in the mainstream talk about them too. For example, Ann Rule books are very popular.

Jadie, that’s ironic.
96. Suskis - October 6th, 2008 at 3:02 am
I suggest the great Stileproject ( http://www.stileproject.com/ ) and, even more, its related forum: The Forum ( http://www.theforum.com/ ). The former is more a porn related site (but the freaking side of it is that sex is mixed with morgue picture, amputations and other disgusting stuff) but the forum is really a great place to open your mind about anything!
97. Iain - October 6th, 2008 at 4:40 am
A very thought provoking and well structured list. It makes you think about the limits of free speech and appears largely structured in terms of a descending order of actively causing actual harm (although for this reason I would put the fight site higher up).
NAMBLA is a case in point. However vile their viewpoint is, campaigning for it is free speech. The Suicide and Anorexia sites prey on vulnerable people and so are actively harmful rather than free expression. Remember we have and always have had laws against harmful expression (libel, slander, emergency service hoaxes, treasonous commentators like Lord Haw Haw). So if the NAMBLA site contained ‘tips and tricks’ like the Anorexia site, that’s probably where it would cross the line.
98. SiR10 - October 6th, 2008 at 5:18 am
Wow /b/ isn’t on the list? Anon goes out the way to be horrible and vile.
99. FifthSonata - October 6th, 2008 at 5:22 am
#7: Nikki - “I would say that pro-ana sites are not as bad as telling ill or sane people how to kill themselves, or the crime photos site.”
Pro-anorexia websites ARE doing just that, Nikki - is it exactly safe to tell an insecure teenager how to vomit their dinner and lie and cheat to their loved ones? Is it safe to give ideas to an already insecure teenager how to obsessively burn calories all night long? Is it safe to give them ideas on how to boost their metabolism until they’ve developed a drug problem or heart arrhythmia?
The only difference between pro-anorexia/bulimia websites and the suicide websites is the amount of time until the death of the sufferer….eating disorders DO kill.
100. Quiana - October 6th, 2008 at 6:31 am
Ive known about rotten for some years now. use to sneek on it at school. Creepy stuff but you cant turn away.
101. Quiana - October 6th, 2008 at 6:33 am
Oh and can someone tell me what the 4chan site is all about. Everyone keeps mentioning it and I’m too scared to look without a warning.
102. Anonislegion - October 6th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Quiana, 4Chan is an ok imageboard website as long as you stay away from /b/ or some of the ‘not safe for work’ boards.
Only ‘newcomers’ (I cannot use the /b/ term on this website) would substitute 4chan.org for /b/, because most of the category websites can be insightful with people actually interested in the topics of the thread.
If you go on /b/, just keep in mind, everything you see on this website appears in that board, including things by far worse than what was listed.
103. Callie - October 6th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
ohhh pro ana…
I’ve been thrown in the hospital twice for anorexia and I can tell you I learned more from my former roommates and pro ana websites than I care to tell. Some of things I used to do..bleh.
I feel like for people like that, or for the suicide one…they’re going to do it whether there are advocates or not. Shutting down the websites isn’t going to do much. At least when I was visitng pro ana sites there were others like me…it’s a really strange comfort.
104. DetroitOS - October 6th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
gonna buy me some sk stuff
105. Christine - October 6th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
The family who was sent pics of their dead daughter happened right here where I live in Orange County, CA. It is awful and I sympathy them greatly, but they are now suing the City for millions of dollars that taxpayers like me will have to pay. I find that very unfair… I had nothing to do with those pics nor did I have anything to do with their daughter slamming the car her father didn’t loan her into a freeway column going over 100 mph.
After saying that, I have no intention of ever going to any of these sites (except Pirate Bay which doesn’t really offend me, I just have no interest in going there).
106. orenj - October 6th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
lol two people comment at the same time, and one thinks they are first ahaha. thats what you get for saying first second third etc. anyways, weird list, disturbing that people are interested in those things…
107. Melina - October 7th, 2008 at 1:13 am
I was introduced to rotten dot com as an eight year old. I would spend hours on it at a time when my parents were working. It totally screwed me up, to say the least.
108. kaiser1778 - October 7th, 2008 at 1:48 am
DO NOT GO TO /b/ unless you want to see a picture of what they promote on NAMBLA. How do they get away with posting things like that!?!
Curiosity got the best of me and I’ll never be the same again.
109. Notforever - October 7th, 2008 at 2:41 am
I don’t get it, how could they legitimize the “love” between old men and “consentual” minors — it’s illegal this is just so terrible.
110. Anonislegion - October 7th, 2008 at 5:44 am
They do it for ‘lulz’ kaiser, nothing is sacred on /b/
111. astraya - October 7th, 2008 at 6:01 am
Is the creator of the suicide site still alive? If so, why?
112. Woooooolhouse - October 7th, 2008 at 6:43 am
I came across a Necrophilia “How-To” site back in college. It was linked from a Dolphin sex “How-To” site, which was linked from a comedy site. I suppose if it was more well-known, maybe it would have found its way to this list . . .
113. Savanti Romero - October 7th, 2008 at 8:52 am
I belong to NAMBLA, the National Association of Marlon Brando Look-alikes. That other NAMBLA store or name!!!!!!!
114. lulzy - October 7th, 2008 at 11:39 am
The Palin/email incident, NFL ‘terrorist’ threats, Rick Aistley possibly best artist EVAR, screwing the Scientologists…
I can’t see how /b/ is not on this list. Perhaps LV is not wanting to attract the attention of the unforgetting, unforgiving, anon legions? Probably a wise move.
Check out encyclopedia dramatica if you want a more detailed account of what actually goes on at /b/, without actual going there. And remember, no one likes the anti lulz!
As always, great list LV!
115. Brickhouse - October 7th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Wow, this is interesting. And I want to check out some of these out of curiosity… When I’m not supposed to be working, that is.
116. Melina - October 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
113 Savanti Romero- Haha…Dr. Mephesto. Hes actually based off of Marlon Brando too.
I went to the house of thin…wtf? Theres a pic of the webmistress and yeah…terrible stuff.
117. Melina - October 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
And I regretfully checked out NAMBLA and read some of the stories. Seriously messed up. The feds are probably watching my computer now.
118. joebecca - October 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
i didn’t know NAMBLA was a real thing… dang!!!
I have been on Rotten.com. When i first got AOL (LOL) in 99-2000 someone told me about it, i only looked at some of the celeb autopsy stuff though, they have JFK and Tupac on there as well as some others. in fact i think you have a list JFrater of some of the same pics they have. Nothing too bad there, but i know they used to have a “severed hands” page. NEVER went there!!! who the eff wants to look at severed hands?? Gross!
119. AnnabelleRoxayne - October 7th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
I used to visit suicide bus stop alot, I can kinda understand their views and justifications. I found it really helpful, not in bringing me closer to ending my life but deciding I wasn’t ready to stop living.
I, like most, was surprised not to see *chans or ED, both of them can successfully upset most people in some ways. There has always been alot of controversy. Still, I tyhink you made good choices with this list.
120. Tattyuk - October 8th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I’m a member of ogrishforum.com and I can guarantee you that I am not sick and dangerous as one comment posted. The majority of members are very moral and intelligent and are just as likely to be discussing the global credit crunch as they are of a murder scene photograph! Yes, there is a lot of photos/videos that some might find upsetting but ultimately, if people are sensitive, they shouldn’t look. There is stuff there that I know would upset me so I don’t look and then complain it shouldn’t be there, we all have different ideas of what is too disturbing and I am not about to judge what people’s boundaries are on the internet. I can say this though, I have had a nose on a pro-ana forum and it was infinitely more disturbing than anything I have ever seen on Ogrish. These girls were encouraging each other to starve to death and extolling those that hadn’t eaten in weeks. Tell me that is not worse than looking at a photograph?
121. rushfan - October 10th, 2008 at 9:02 am
Sorry guys, never heard of 4chan. I looked it up since it was mentioned so much, and it seems like pretty mundane stuff to me.
What’s /b/? I can’t find it.
122. tsavo darkness - October 10th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
no, no, no, people saying the photos from rotten.com are the most disgusting, you obvioulsy have not seen the clip “Two girls and one cup.” Corpses do not bother me, mutilated or whole, new or old.
123. rushfan - October 10th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
two girls one cup is nothing compared to the pain olympics
124. Denzell - October 10th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
2. jadie- not really.
I haven’t visited any of these sites except the pirate bay, but I did not- I repeat, did not download anything from there.
125. BTK - October 13th, 2008 at 8:49 am
FUCKING SICK, Wtf The Pirate Bay doing on this list?
126. kaiser1778 - October 15th, 2008 at 10:42 am
rushfan - http://img.4chan.org/b/imgboard.html
It won’t take long for you to find yourself sufficiently disturbed.
127. ajaxkid - October 16th, 2008 at 6:07 am
I can handle anything EXCEPT awful things done to children.
Death photos or “alternative” lifestyle type of things (whatever, not pretty, that’s life) until they include children.
There is no such thing as a “consensual” child.
You don’t mess with mentally incapacitated, you don’t mess with the physically incapacitated, you don’t mess with children, you don’t mess with the elderly and you don’t mess with animals.
If it’s not truly consensual, that’s criminal… period. It’s rape, sure enough.
128. Polly Odyssey - October 16th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
What about God Hates Fags? I think that’s been pretty controversial.
129. kaiser1778 - October 16th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I couldn’t agree with you more ajaxkid. Well said.
130. Katiejh - October 20th, 2008 at 11:00 am
my brother committed suicide and i think one of those suicide sites was at least partly to blame. you’ve gotta be seriously sick to think its a good idea to encourage something like suicide or anorexia. As for the peadophile site….shoot the fuckers!
131. Rina - October 29th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Ever been to a propaganda site? Thats the worst site I’ve ever seen and I hate myself for even going there. It looks so innocent and suddenly you stumble upon the videos. I’ve only been to one and still have nightmares about a single video clip I saw. I always thought beheading is a quick swing of the sword and its over. But after seeing this I had to change my mind and every time I hear the word beheading I want to run away. Nasty!!!
132. brad - November 5th, 2008 at 11:47 am
circlist
133. Annie Moose - November 5th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
The Pirate Bay is the only reasonably decent one on the list. Sure, it’s also the only one with serious claims of illegality, but hey, at least it doesn’t show/tell you how to kill yourself/someone else, or encourage such behaviour.
134. Anon. E. Mouse - November 6th, 2008 at 12:30 am
Wow… A controversial website list that does NOT contain good ole 4chan or Encyclopaedia Dramatica? Dang… They’re like this whole list rolled into one.
The boys with Anon have had thier fair share of stints on TV and in magazines (see thier current campaign against scientology).
The only things I’m personally offended by here are the pro-ana and pro-pedo websites. The suicide website does bother me some, but not nearly as much. Ogrish and Rotten, and the like, have never been a bother to me. Then again, I’m not the most mentally healthy individual around. Realistically, the only things that really disturb me are cruelty to animals and children, both of whom don’t deserve the treatment.
The lesson of the internet: Once you learn to turn off your moral compass, everything can be funny! Long live the lulz, fellas! Oh, and be kind to mudkipz.
135. BristolFish - November 6th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Got curious and clicked the “4chan” link, WTF is that all about? Is my ip address logged somewhere now? shit!
Wait, a big van’s pulled up outside my house, someone’s knocking on the door BRB…..
136. Kealey - November 10th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
I’m physically forcing myself to not look at these sites. …Curiosity killed the cat. Curiosity killed the cat. Must. Not. Look.
137. david - November 12th, 2008 at 11:21 am
im looking for a site, it has reality in the URL and you have to be a member, does anyone know

The Daily Rotten forums are more frequently updated.
www.dailyrotten.com
www.b0g.org is sicker, but Rotten has it’s…uh, charm.
