Top 10 Sports Figures Who Blew It
Published on January 8, 2008 - 165 Comments
Despite brilliant careers, many sporting figures have blown their reputations away by foolishness or crime. This is a list of the top 10.
10. Pete Rose (1941 - Reds, Phillies, Expos - Reds Manager)
In August 1989, three years after he retired as an active player, Rose agreed to permanent ineligibility from baseball amidst accusations that he gambled on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds; some accusations claimed that he bet on, and even against, the Reds. After years of public denial, in 2004 he admitted to betting on, but not against, the Reds. After Rose’s ban was instated, the Baseball Hall of Fame formally voted to ban those on the “permanently ineligible” list from induction. His hordes of adoring fans each, in their own way, continue to plead for his inclusion into the Hall, but thus far, no one is bending. So, I guess that just goes to show you how incomprehensibly stupid it is to bet while still employed by the MLB. Nice one, Charlie Hustle.
9. Ray Lewis (1975 - Baltimore Ravens)
Despite his accomplishments on the field, Lewis’ public image was tarnished following a Super Bowl party on January 31, 2000. Following this party a fight broke out and Jacinth Baker, 21, and Richard Lollar, 24, died from stab wounds. Lewis and two companions, Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, were brought to an Atlanta Police station for questioning. During the questioning Lewis lied to investigators by saying he didn’t know the other two suspects. However Lewis’ limo driver told the police that he saw Lewis punch one of the victims. The limo driver further stated that Lewis told the other occupants to stay quiet, and that Sweeting and Oakley stated “I stabbed mine”. Eleven days later, along with Oakley and Sweeting, Ray Lewis was indicted for murder and aggravated assault. Lewis’s attorney arranged with prosecutors to dismiss the murder charges if Lewis pleads guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice in exchange for him testifying against Oakley and Sweeting. Lewis accepted this plea bargain, and he was sentenced to one year probation. He was not suspended by the NFL but was fined a league-record at the time $250,000. And he continues to ‘kill’ on the field to this day! My hero!
8. Ty Cobb (1886-1961 - Tigers, A’s - Tigers Manager)
On May 15, 1912, in New York’s Highland Park, the Detroit Tigers were playing the hometown New York Highlanders. In the stands behind home plate was a Highlander fan named Claude Lueker who was giving Detroit’s Ty Cobb a tough time. A really tough time. According to spectators who were in the stands that day, Lueker hurled insults and epithets at Cobb every time the Georgia Peach came to the plate. By the end of the fifth inning, Cobb warned the Highlanders manager and the umpires that if the man wasn’t ejected from the game, there was going to be some serious trouble. Nothing was done to the rambunctious fan, and so when he called the notoriously racist Cobb a “half-nigger” in the bottom of the sixth inning, the ferocious outfielder climbed into the crowded stands, leapt upon the man and began beating him senseless. Other fans began pleading with Cobb to stop the physical attack because the foul-mouthed Mr. Lueker had no hands. He had apparently lost them years earlier in an industrial accident. As the crowd pleaded, Cobb responded as he pummeled the man, “I don’t care if he’s got no feet!” American League Commissioner Ban Johnson, who was at the game that day, immediately suspended Cobb indefinitely from baseball. See where protecting your good name gets you? I’m not even a half-’N-Word’ and I would have done the same thing.
7. Chris Benoit (1967-2007 - WCW, ECW, WWE {F})
On June 25th, 2007, Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and their 7-year-old son Daniel were found dead in their Fayetteville, GA, home at around 2:30 p.m. The Fayette County, Georgia Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating this case. Police entered Benoit’s home on a “welfare check” after several missed appointments, and found three dead bodies. Investigators confirmed that Benoit, over a three day period, murdered his wife and son and subsequently committed suicide. Thanks to the hurried response by Vince McMahon and the WWE, he was immortalized in a 2-hour segment covering his lengthy career… oops, should have waited! Not until nearly the full way through the show did the WWE come to realize that this was a double murder/suicide. Open mouth, insert foot.
6. Darryl Strawberry (1962 - Mets, Dodgers, Giants, Yankees)
Strawberry began to use alcohol and eventually he started to experiment with cocaine and amphetamines. Strawberry had been drinking beer casually since high school but started using drugs upon his arrival with the Mets as a way to fit in. It was easy to drink after the game as the team gave the players complimentary beer and then he and other Mets would continue the party often all night long. He began to use amphetamines to overcome his hangovers before games. By 1987 he was drinking virtually every night and was using more cocaine. Though he reached career highs in batting average (.283), home runs (39), and RBIs (104) he was starting to wear on the Mets organization. He skipped part of spring training and then missed a late-season game claiming he had a virus. In January 1989 Strawberry was arrested after a domestic violence complaint by his wife. Strawberry spent a short time in an alcohol rehabilitation center and admitted that he had a problem with alcohol, though he told no one at the center about his drug use. The only thing worse than his professional life was his private life. To cope with his back injury and personal problems, he resumed drinking alcohol and soon after he turned to cocaine. He had an altercation with a homeless man in September of 1993 and then divorced his wife in October. Later that year Strawberry uttered the infamous comment about his hometown. When informed that people were rioting and looting in Los Angeles he said, “Let it burn”. In 1994, the government said Strawberry owed $146,000 in taxes on income he hadn’t reported. Strawberry was facing jail time, his legal bills were bankrupting him, and he turned to alcohol, which led him to do a line or two of cocaine. His brief cocaine use caused him to fail a drug test. He was released from the Giants and received a sixty-day suspension from baseball. Suddenly Strawberry was broke, had no income, and was facing a trial. On Wednesday, April 15th, 1999, he was arrested for possession of .3 grams of cocaine after allegedly soliciting a prostitute, who turned out to be an undercover police officer. Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig put Strawberry on administrative leave, which meant he was not able to play or practice with the team. Strawberry claimed that the cocaine did not belong to him, and he was joking with the woman and would not have met her at a hotel. The Yankees kept him off the 40-man roster and some sources believe the team suspended his pay. That appeared to be it for his illustrious career, aside from about fifteen more minor infractions. Stellar.
5. Ron Artest (1979 - Bulls, Pacers, Kings)
On November, 19th, 2004, Artest took center stage in arguably the most infamous brawl in professional basketball history. The game took place in Auburn Hills Michigan between Artest’s Pacers and the home team Detroit Pistons. The brawl began when Artest fouled Pistons center Ben Wallace as Wallace was putting up a shot. Wallace, upset at being fouled hard when the game was effectively over (the Pacers led 97-82), responded by shoving Artest, leading to an altercation near the scorer’s table. Artest walked to the sideline and lay down on the scorer’s table, while mocking Wallace. Wallace then threw an armband at Artest while he pretended to give a radio interview at the scorer’s table. Reacting to Wallace throwing something at Artest, Pistons fan John Green threw a cup of beer at Artest, hitting him. Artest jumped into the front-row seats and confronted a man he believed to be responsible (who turned out to be the wrong man), which in turn erupted into a brawl between Pistons fans and several of the Pacers. Artest returned to the basketball court, and punched Pistons fan A.J. Shackleford, who was apparently taunting Artest verbally. This fight resulted in the game being stopped with less than a minute remaining. Artest and teammates Jermaine O’Neil and Stephen Jackson were suspended indefinitely the day after the game, along with Wallace. On November 21st, the NBA announced that Artest would be suspended for the remainder of the season (73 games plus playoff appearances). This is the longest non-drug or betting related suspension in NBA history. Now that’s something to be proud of. Jackass.
4. Mike Tyson (1966 - Heavyweight Boxing)
Tyson was arrested in July 1991 for the rape of Miss Black Rhode Island, Desree Washington in an Indianapolis hotel room. Tyson was convicted on the charge on Feb., 10th, 1992. Tyson’s trial is chronicled in the book, Down For The Count by Mark Shaw. It strongly suggests that Tyson would not have been convicted if he had been provided adequate legal defense counsel and that Tyson thus did not receive a fair trial. Under Indiana law, a defendant convicted of a felony must begin serving his prison sentence immediately after the sentence is imposed. He was given a sentence of six years and was released on March 1995 after serving three years. On June 28th, 1997, the second bout between Tyson and Holyfield would become one of the most controversial events in modern sports. The fight was stopped at the end of the third round, with Tyson disqualified for biting Holyfield on both ears. One bite was severe enough to remove a piece of Holyfield’s right ear, which was found on the ring floor after the fight. Tyson later stated that it was retaliation for Holyfield repeatedly head butting him without penalty. In the confusion that followed the ending of the bout and announcement of the decision, a near riot erupted in the arena and several people were injured in the ensuing melee. On July 29th, 1997, Tyson’s boxing license was revoked by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in a unanimous voice vote; he was also fined USD $3-million and ordered to pay the legal costs of the hearing. The revocation was not permanent, as a little more than a year later on October 18th, 1998, the commission voted 4-1 to restore Tyson’s boxing license. Legal problems caught up with Tyson once again. On February 6th, 1999, Tyson was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment, fined $5,000, and ordered to serve two years probation and perform 200 hours of community service for assaulting two motorists after a traffic accident on Aug. 31st, 1998. He served nine months of that sentence. You know, being a monster in the ring that subsequently leads to clean bouts and great boxing is one thing, but being a drugged-out juggernaut in the real world is always going to get your dumb ass in trouble.
3. Rae Carruth (1974 - Panthers)
On November 16th, 1999, near Carruth’s home in Charlotte, North Carolina, Cherica Adams, a woman Carruth had been dating, was shot four times in a drive-by shooting. Surviving the shooting for a time, Adams called 911 and described Carruth’s behavior: He had stopped his vehicle in front of hers as another vehicle drove alongside Adams’ and its passenger shot her. Carruth then drove from the scene. Adams was eight months pregnant with Carruth’s child. It was later found out she was pregnant with twins. Soon after her admission to the hospital, Adams fell into a coma. Doctors saved one of the children’s lives, the other later died from complications. Later, Carruth went to the police and posted a $3 million bond, with the condition that if either Adams or the children died, he would turn himself in. However, after Adams died, Carruth became a fugitive. The Panthers released him a few days later, citing a morals clause in his contract. He was eventually captured after being found hiding in the trunk of a car outside a motel in Parkers Crossroads, Tennessee. Also, in the trunk was $3,900 in cash, bottles to hold Carruth’s urine, extra clothes, candy bars, and a cell phone. At trial Rae Carruth was defended by David Rudolph and was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder by shooting into an occupied vehicle, and using an instrument to destroy an unborn child. He was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison. However, Carruth was found not guilty of 1st-degree murder and was spared the death penalty. Carruth is now serving a sentence of at least 18 years and 11 months at Nash Correctional Institution near Raleigh, NC. According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, he has a projected release date of October 22, 2018. Wow, shooting a woman who is pregnant is like an instant ticket on the bus to Hell. Congrats.
2. Michael Vick (1980 - Falcons)
Michael Dwayne Vick is a suspended National Football League (NFL) quarterback under contract with the Atlanta Falcons team serving a 23 month sentence of incarceration for criminal conspiracy resulting from felonious dog fighting. A U.S. federal district court convicted and sentenced him in 2007 and a 2008 trial is scheduled for related Virginia state felony charges for his role in the dog fighting ring and related gambling activity. He is currently being held at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. This is the official, “How To Ruin A Promising Quarterback Career” Step One. His ticket has been punched and he’s going to ride on the same bus as Carruth. Dog fighting. Despicable.
1. OJ Simpson (1947 - Bills, 49ers)
Besides his Hall of Fame career, Simpson is infamous for having been tried for the murder of ex-wife Nicole-Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1994. He was acquitted in criminal court in 1995 after a lengthy, highly publicized trial. In 1997, Simpson was found liable for their deaths in civil court, but to date has paid little of the $33.5 million judgment. He gained further notoriety in late 2006 when he wrote a book titled If I Did It. The book, which purports to be a first-person fictional account of the murder had he actually committed it, was withdrawn by the publisher just before its release. The book was later released by the Goldman family and the title of the book was expanded to If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer. In September 2007, Simpson faced more legal troubles, as he was arrested and subsequently charged with numerous felonies including but not limited to robbery, burglary, and assault, all with a deadly weapon, first-degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon (which carries possible life sentence), coercion with use of a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit a crime. This guy, the absolute most abhorrent criminal in the sporting world, regardless (in my opinion) of his innocence, is about as criminally clean as Satan. If anyone out there who is reading this believes, whole-heartedly, that OJ is anything other than GUILTY, let me hear about it, because I am so not convinced. As he spends his days searching for the ‘real killer’ on the golf course while avoiding his restitution obligations, I’ll maintain that his ass deserves to be put to death by firing squad.

jesse: I am sure that is entirely coincidental
Catriona: I think we might have him on another list somewhere - it might have been one of the accident lists.

15. Mom424 - January 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Stewwriter; I was recovering from fairly major surgery during the oj trial/fiasco, i watched the whole damn thing..he was not found innocent but not guilty, an entirely different matter…and had the prosecution not been so cavalier in their acceptance of the jury, with little or no challenges, i believe the verdict would have been different,,,also Lance Ito (the judge) was/is a ditz….
(the jury sucked, lots of reverse prejudice, and none of ‘em seemed terribly bright) and before you all flame me as some sort of bigot,,,,I am not,,,I’ve said it before,,,”assholes come in all colours”
16. Mom424 - January 8th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
ps; firing squad is too quick, i think pistol whip, beaten to within an inch of his life, then slashed in a frenzy, and just before he dies, we could throw something acidic, then of course we could spend 2 or 3 or 4 million of the victims’ money to buy our way to freedom….
17. Balaji Duttt - January 8th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
I have to ask - was there no other photo of Pete Rose available? Anywhere?
Gah.. my eyes.
18. Mom424 - January 8th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
pete rose, chris beniot, ty cobb not black…
oj’s not really black either, only when its to his convenience,,,he’s rich…..
amazing what happens when you think you’re just too cool, you can excuse almost any kind of horrendous behaviour..a culture of entitlement, i’m better than you so the rules don’t apply to me,,,
(in oj’s case thats exactly what happened)
19. Borg - January 8th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Pretty good list. Maybe because I’m baseball biased I notice the baseball omissions more but some I would include in notable omissions are: Barry Bonds, Dwight Gooden, Shoeless Joe Jackson, and John Rocker.
20. Tony - January 8th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
As a wrestling fan (flame away i dont care), the benoit situation was insane. The tribute show was so sad, then you found out the truth of what happened. All these wrestlers were saying how great of a father and husband Chris was, then look what happened. And by the way, i think Michael Vick was so high up on the list because he was so famous. I dont understand how a guy who ran a dogfighting ring was higher on the list than a man who suffocated his son and choked his wife. Double Murder/Suicide>Dogfighting host
21. Bill Gates Penis - January 8th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Hello I am Bill Gates Penis.. just surfin’ the web.. found this great site.. how is everybody..
22. stormy617 - January 8th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
OMG what is up with that pic of Pete Rose???
What the hell were they thinking??
Thats just scary as hell!!
23. Mary - January 8th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Tony: Benoit is lucky to be number 7 when you consider he didn’t even play a sport. And if you are a wrestling fan you should know about Pacman Jones, the disgraced football star and criminal who TNA wrestling treated as a hero.
Btw, in addition to doing a show in honour of double murderer Chris Benoit, WWE featured Mike Tyson and Pete Rose on their programing _after they had earned their spot on this list.
24. Tony - January 8th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
omg bill gates penis….i have so many questions for you….are you gold plated?
25. StewWriter - January 8th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Mom424: Funny as it may seem, I watched the damn OJ fiasco from beginning to end with a friend of mine (like from the White Bronco chase all the way to the anti-climax) We stayed up, riveted (for some seemingly stupid reason) and planned the rest of our day around the nonsense. Man. Anyway, I also remember exactly where I was when I heard the verdict as well, missing the beginning of a movie in the theater parking lot. Good Lord, I had issues.
Tony: Honestly, the only real reason I stuck Vick so far up the list was because his goings-on were so recent, as the current football season is just now grinding to a halt. Otherwise, I agree, Benoit murdering his family and then killing himself would have likely been higher.
Blogball: Goodness! I could have gotten about six lists out of those! Is that every other sports player on Earth? Kidding, but concise list nonetheless! Thanks!
26. Kelsi - January 8th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
SubliminalDeath: Here here!! xD I’m not a cat person either, but hurt my dogs and I’ll get you when you least expect it. You will live the rest of your life in fear because I will hunt you down and kill you and I will never get caught and wou will never even see me coming. =|
Good list though!
27. Crimanon - January 8th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Jesse: that was pretty uncalled for. However, Chris rock said it best, “We’re ten percent of the population but we’re ninety percent of the final four.” Just because they’re of a different race doesn’t mean that they are the Entire problem, they just have more of the spot light. Had these guys been your average Shmoe you wouldn’t even know what had happened.
28. Tony - January 8th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Actually i dont really know anything about TNA, but i think i heard the name pacman jones at some point. I guess your right if this is a “sports” list not “sports entertainment”.
On another note, i dont see why this is turning into a racial discussion here. I dont think Jesses comment was out of line in any way.
29. JJ - January 8th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
i think the whole dog fighting thing is blown out of porportion its not as bad as people let on you cant force a dog to do something it doesnt want to do and (besides pit bulls were breed to fight) its the simple truth.
and maybe there are more black guys on this list because blacks consist of the majority of the the criminal element(i’m black by the way) this is also the truth
30. mattayeaux - January 8th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Srew, great list. I love the way you write. I have seen comments that you are a novelist. If that is true, where can I find one of your books? I think I would enjoy them.
31. Tony - January 8th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
JJ i gotta disagree man, although my post above said i didn’t agree with Michael Vicks list placement, i do agree to the severity of his crime. Dogs can very easily be forced to fight, if they are raised in a violent mistreated environment they become aggressive plain and simple. Theres no such thing as an affectionate lapdog that fights other dogs to the death. He pitted these animals against each other and made profit of the results. If you don’t see that as a despicable act, you shouldnt be telling anyone about “the simple truth”.
32. Miss Destiny - January 8th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
The WWE aired the tribute to Chris Benoit because that is what they do when news like that breaks. They did it for Owen Hart and also for Eddie Guerrero when both stars passed. Before the full story came out, Benoit was such a beloved figure in the wrestling business, the WWE was doing what they felt was necessary. I’m not defending Chris Benoit at all, I’m just saying I agree with the WWE for the decision they made regarding the tribute show. At that particular moment I think there would have been an outrage among the fans had they just gone ahead with business as usual.
I will say without any shame that I am terribly saddened with the knowledge that the memory of one of the greatest technical wrestlers of all time will be forever tarnished.
33. el duderino - January 8th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
WWE is by no stretch of the imagination a “sport”. Watch a real MMA fight then watch a WWE event and see if you can tell the difference.
I don’t noticing that 7/10 of the guys up there are black is racist, it’s just an observation without characterization.
JJ you couldn’t be more wrong about dog fighting. Bit Pulls are bred to fight by sadistic asshats who want to see dogs tear each other apart, it’s not like these are naturally occurring events that people like Vick just happen to be witness and bet on.
34. JJ - January 9th, 2008 at 1:00 am
Tony my statement was you cant force a dog to do anything it doesnt want to,,it is true i have been around dog fighters and their dogs and these dogs are friendly and sweet around people and they only get excited around other dogs,, they like to fight,,,dogs dont wag their tails when they are doing something they dont like,,,,,,,yes pit bulls were bred to fight thats why they exsist
35. JJ - January 9th, 2008 at 1:04 am
that OJ trial was bullshit that nigger should have fried!!!!
36. Ginger Lee - January 9th, 2008 at 1:52 am
Instead of a racism debate it looks like this is turning into a capital punishment debate…and a dog fighting debate.
Jeez, sometimes these comments turn into Sean Hannity phone-ins or The View…all sass and no class.
37. jbjr - January 9th, 2008 at 5:27 am
Bonds and Clemens may have to be added sooner than later!
38. jbjr - January 9th, 2008 at 5:27 am
very timely list
39. jbjr - January 9th, 2008 at 5:35 am
Former Gold medal winner disgraced Marion Jones.
Throw Floyd Landis (Tour De France) in there two.
Track and Field and Cycling the dirtiest of dirtiest as far as cheating but baseball getting there.
The Juice what an arrogant asshole! Couldn’t go away had to committ another crime (allegedly).
40. jbjr - January 9th, 2008 at 5:44 am
Lesser known than Rose as far as criminal activites concerned - Denny McLain major league’s last 30 game winner ended up in jail for various fraud/illegal schemes. Art Schliester, NFL Quarterback who was a deginerate gambler (as Joe Pesci described mob bosses in casino)who also did time.
41. jbjr - January 9th, 2008 at 5:47 am
Hey I just gave you four white guys! Clemens, McClain, Landis, Schliester!
Just kidding guys! The list is pretty good.
42. StewWriter - January 9th, 2008 at 5:50 am
mattayeau: Wow, am I flattered! Yes, a writer and an illustrator, but by no means an novelist… not yet, anyway. If you want, you can see a ton of my writing right here: http://stewwriter.blogspot.com
Much of my writing appears here, so you might see a few duplicates. If you are interested, my two chap books appear on my MySpace page as well, just look up Stewwriter. Enjoy!
43. jbjr - January 9th, 2008 at 5:51 am
One last comment - Its really sad to see Joe Frazier and Leon Spinks down and out both blowing millions. Boixing in general was the dirtiest sport for so long now nobody cares. Sports Entertainment (WWE) and now MMA has supplanted them especially in pay per view and interest.
44. evan - January 9th, 2008 at 6:29 am
Denny McLain then started working at 7-11 after his jail sentence
45. yeravgjock - January 9th, 2008 at 6:35 am
Great list… i think it was a lil out of order but another reason why im addicted to this thing… but on a lil side note did anyone else think that the title was going to talk about sports bluders? (like bill buckners missed ground ball) and not dumbasses that give human being a bad name?

stewwriter; Yeah I remember when they came out with the verdict, I actually wondered if the jury saw the same trial I did. I understand the climate of bigotry/corruption that had existed in the LAPD for years; to use that as an excuse to let a murderer go free, morally reprehensible. Do the right thing, then bitch; I feel that the complaints of the minority community would have been better served with a guilty verdict. ie; You guys are such dirty assholes, and we still did the right thing…
48. bucslim - January 9th, 2008 at 7:20 am
If this is a list about sports figures who blew it, what about Tayna Harding - she would have medaled if that fat guy could hit harder.
Former Nebraska back Lawrence Phillips could be one of the greatest NFL running backs ever if his head wasn’t overflowing with steaming piles of shit. The list of criminal acts this chisel head has committed would be longer than the unabridged copy of War and Peace. Ok, he had a rough childhood, if it were me, I’m sure a few million dollars would pay for a lot of therapy.
Bodie Miller might have an Olympic Gold medal around his neck but he decided that being a lazy stoner party dude was more important.
Greg Norman might have two green jackets if he learned how to play golf without both hands around his neck.
Poor Bill Buckner. Probably one of baseball’s toughest, grittiest players. The Red Sox wouldn’t be where they were without him, he’d tear off his limbs in order to make a play. Yet in spite of all of his hustle and clutch play, he’s remembered for a ball rolling between his legs.
Former Oklahoma football QB Charles Thompson might have a national championship ring if he wasn’t a coke dealer. That incident practically ruined OU football for the next 10 years.
Arizona State RB Loren Wade murdered a teammate for talking, that’s right I said talking, to his girlfriend. It was reported that Wade was on steroids at the time.
Chris Webber could have helped his team win an NCAA basketball national championship if he could have remembered how many timeouts there are in a half.
Hey everybody! I’m Len Bias, I’m a hot young prospect who just got drafted by one of the most storied NBA teams in history! I’ve got nothing but a pile of cash to spend and an awesome career ahead of me! Where’s the coke!?!?!
Ricky Williams could’ve been one of the greatest NFL running backs ever but he picked rocking the gange and rollin doobies over a mountain of money. That’s right, he’d rather smoke pot than get paid millions.
Are you guys getting the picture? Just because you can hit a fastball, do a tomahawk 360 dunk, take a hand-off and race down the sidelines, or chip in from the bunker doesn’t make you smart. Maybe some of the ass-kissing and constant fawning over some of these spoiled, pampered and pompous athletes might have something to do with it.
49. dischuker - January 9th, 2008 at 7:36 am
yeravgjock: buckner was the first thing i was expecting when i saw the title. maybe another good list idea.
since this list is turning into a debate about race (hot topic) and several other lists have debated religion (hot topic) and politics (hot topic) let me stir another fire…
why is it that Rae Caruth, and presumably others, who kill a pregnant woman get charged with the death of the child also but if the woman goes into a clinic to kill the child it is called choice? Caruth is charged with, i don’t know if this is the actual charge, “using an instrument to kill an unborn child”. the instrument, i’m assuming, is the gun. this is criminal. when a doctor kills a baby with forcepts, scissors and a vacuum tube it isn’t criminal?
what sort of messed up world do we live in?
50. SocialButterfly - January 9th, 2008 at 8:12 am
yeravgjock: That is what I was expecting too but this was a great list nontheless.
dischucker: I am not saying whether I am for or against abortion but Caruth was tried in NC so it is possible that abortion is illegal in that state.
Mom424: How black OJ is is fully dependant on which magazine you are reading… remember the Time/Newsweek fiasco (which incidentally is outlined in the photoshop list)
51. Crimanon - January 9th, 2008 at 8:16 am
Disc: Abortion is legal in NC, I would know, being from there and all.
52. TerranRich - January 9th, 2008 at 8:30 am
At least Pete Rose is in the WWE Hall of Fame, celebrity wing (created just for him, I believe).
As for the Benoit tribute show, wrestling has become so accustomed to having wrestlers die too soon that they pay tribute to them, sometimes without knowing the full story. It really just proves that they had no idea Benoit was capable of what he allegedly did, and they thought he was murdered… as I did when the story first broke out.
Just put yourself in their shoes… one of their top stars is found dead (he was slated to win one of their titles, according to rumors at the time), 24 hours before their big weekly TV program is to air live. They’ve gone through so many deaths, including that of Eddie Guerrero, who died two years earlier, so their routine is to pay tribute to them, especially if they were top stars. They make the decision to pay tribute to them, at a time when there were no accusations or suicide-murder theories yet.
It was unfortunate that they paid tribute to a man who allegedly committed murder and then suicide, but it wasn’t any fault of the company’s. They even corrected it the next night on another one of their shows, when the chairman, Vince McMahon, came on air and said that they would no longer mention his name from that point on, and that the tribute was a mistake, but was the right decision at the time.
53. bucslim - January 9th, 2008 at 8:52 am
I thought the tag line read “sports” figures, not roided up man-whores who scream at the camera. Calling pro wrestling a sport is like saying heroin has nutritional value.
Pro rasslin was created to sell razor blades on TV. If you can don a pair of neon trunks or a singlet and prance around in matching combat boots while calling yourself the Mongolian Stomper, I’m not sure you’re an ‘athlete,’ or a ’sports figure.’
Just look at the audience, they shame the cast of The Hills Have Eyes.
54. copperdragon - January 9th, 2008 at 8:58 am
che: i’m with you. this list was a little narrow in its scope. where’s the women? (marion jones, tonya harding) where’s the europeans or asians?
maybe jfrater is saving them for an additional list?
55. copperdragon - January 9th, 2008 at 9:05 am
i would not want to be a woman in today’s society. the government and the church are constantly battling over what can go in and come out of a woman’s body.
sex within marriage: legal
prostitution: illegal
childbirth: legal
abortion: illegal
i’m no lawyer or historian, but i’ll bet those decisions were not made by women.
56. dave4248 - January 9th, 2008 at 9:10 am
Ty Cobb? Is that a joke? You’ve got the right team, but the wrong player. #8 should be Denny McLain. He was on his way to being perhaps the greatest right hander in the history of the American League….and he squandered it all away. He eventually ended up in jail, not to mention robbing hundreds of their pensions.
57. tristan - January 9th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Michael Vick got put in jail for practices that are common in agriculture/slaughterhouses. PAC-ing(pounding piglets, fetuses, neonates against concrete)raping rack, anal electrocution for fur bearing animals, tethering, starving for male calves and the list goes on and on. Michael Vick was at least in touch about his feelings for non humans-complete disrespect.
“Pitbulls were breed to fight”? thats the same argument they used for human slaves. As a non caucasian I find that logic despicable.
58. Gr8flDdFn - January 9th, 2008 at 9:39 am
all hall of shamers right there.
59. MzFly - January 9th, 2008 at 10:02 am
JJ: Forst off, Pit bulls were NOT originally bred for fighting. They were working dogs. Humans, in all our wisdom and superiority continued to breed and trasin them for fighting.
And secondly, I have been a Michael Vick fan from the start of his career but have lost a lot of respect for him based on the wrongs he has committed. I do not condone dog-fighting in any way however, if that was all he was guilty of it could almost be forgiven. The part that cannot be overlooked is the fact that there were dogs found on his property suffering from starvation, malnourishment and the remains of dogs who didn’t perform well enough for him. THAT cannot be so easily forgotten. He tortured them.
60. Jason - January 9th, 2008 at 10:07 am
Speaking of squandering, the 1919 White Sox (eight of them, anyway) threw away their careers for a couple of bucks.
You could almost forgive those guys, though, when you think of how today’s pampered, over-privileged sports superstars behave as if they are above normal humanity; guys like Vick, Ray Lewis, etc. get paid jillions to run around for a couple hours each week, and behave as though they’re Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter - they’ve got the run of the town, basically, with no consequences.
Athletes in general should be amazed that they get to rake in millions for playing games, endorsing products, etc. That being said, it doesn’t necessarily require the highest test scores on earth to be a basketball/baseball/football player… For some, obviously, the money and fame definitely go to their heads.
61. Dr. Smooth - January 9th, 2008 at 10:08 am
I don’t know about OJ Simpson being on the list, his carrer was already over with. The trial actually gained him fame to a new generation of sports fans, and I recall kids being pissed off that instead of after school cartoons they got stuck watching the trial and news about the trial.
I don’t think Ray Lewis should be on this list either, if anything that Madden Curse is the only thing that ruined his carrer.
You really should add Ricky Williams, he was one of the top backs in the league and killed his carrer failing drug tests then bragging about smoking weed and going into early retirement. The guy was a complete joke after that, plus he cried like a little bitch all the time when defenders would yank his dredlocks.
Onterrio Smith was pretty much his stunt double, but he wasn’t much of a sports figure.
I know this guy never made it pro, but Maurice Clarette would have been perfect for this list.
I really hate the fact you could have a top 10 list of runningbacks alone, thank god for Lawrence Taylor.
62. bjchiz - January 9th, 2008 at 11:15 am
Regarding Blogball’s post, which listed several baseball players…that information is INCORRECT. You got that list from WNBC’s website, which was published before the Mitchell Report was released. WNBC has done a TERRIBLE job fixing that mistake. Many of the players (Jason Varitek for one) were NOT listed in the report.
Love this site, also!
63. Blogball - January 9th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Thanks for pointing that out bjchiz. My apologies to Jason Varitek and others.
I would be really mad if I were him.
I found what I think is a more accurate and detailed list here.

i didnt mean to strike a debate. but i should have known because people like to go nuts over a small un harmful comment like that.
65. Blogball - January 9th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
In my experiences in life the people who point out something like what jesse did are the ones that are not usually prejudice. It is the people that notice it and are afraid to say anything because they think that if a black person hears me say what jesse said he or she will think I am a racist. As if black people can’t distinguish a real racist comment with an innocent observation.
66. Crimanon - January 9th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
How about we all just leave race out of it. Living in New England has given me a perspective on racism that I hadn’t thought before. It’s nothing but Tongue-in-cheek up here and people piss me of. Why does race have to denote potential criminal acts? Why can’t people just shut up for once and not include “He’s one of those guys” mentalities into what could be a good debate on sports statistics. Leave the race card to someone with a little more experience and a law degree.

George Best, the English footballer. Talented as all get-out, nearly a pop star. Squandered everything he gained and boozed himself to an early death. Does that count as ‘blowing it’? Oh, and he was white, in case anyone’s wondering.

i am a cusser. true confession. although i do try to watch my language in front of children, especially my own. my daughter has known for a long time..there are ‘adult words’ and they are not for use by children. gawd knows, she’s had quite an education via Adult Swim. inadvertently but still..
i am all for debate. discussion. sometimes using a well placed curse word to emphasize a point. but in my own opinion..not as an admin nor speaking for listverse…i do think commenting here has become a bit ugly.
keep in mind the words you choose to use do represent you. there is no edit here for commentors. i’m juz say’n…
i am not attempting to curtail debate. discussion. or even heated arguments. i’m just wondering if certain words are what you want associated w/ your presence on this site. hhhmmm…?
and really. creative cursing is an art form of the highest order. one that is to be appreciated for its creativity and skill of use. not just tossing about of expletives.
again..i’m speaking personally and not as a representative of this site. so J’s got his own say about this. and yes, he’ll be reading this for the first time just like ya’ll. (sorry hon)

Nice list, though! =)
82. Ben Heitzman - January 9th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Ray Lewis should not be on this list. Hardly anyone remembers that and I had forgotten he gotten in to trouble until I saw it here.
83. trebek - January 9th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Ty Cobb. America’s first real sports star. Nice to see not much has changed in 100 years.
Gotta remember that when Cobb played, baseball was still first and foremost a GAME. The players didn’t take it seriously all the time. Cobb took the game and made it into a sport.
84. slipstick - January 9th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Yeah, I grew up outside of Detroit so I would say that Denny Mclaine and Bob Probert should be given honorable mentions for not making the list. Let’s fave it, you don’t want to make the list at all, let alone be close to the top.
85. Mom424 - January 9th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

To put Mike Vick in the same category as Rae Carruth is a joke. A pregnant female is no comparison to an animal, i don’t care if it is “mans best friend”. Rae Carruth is no better than Scott Peterson.
90. DiscHuker - January 10th, 2008 at 7:22 am
i’m surprised that nobody took the abortion debate bait.(bate bait?) i could draw a few different conclusions…
1)everyone agrees with what i said (laughable)
2)nobody cares (not likely)
3)everyone is scared to say their views(possible, but highly doubtful on this site)
or
4)everyone is in the midst of massive research about to unload their opinions
are there other reasons that i am missing?
91. bucslim - January 10th, 2008 at 7:45 am
I’m surprised people still watch rasslin!
92. Megatron - January 10th, 2008 at 7:59 am
I think that Benoit and Carruth should be 1 & 2. OJ didn’t kill any kids or a pregnant woman; not to mention he will always be Norbert from The Naked Gun (come on, you all still laugh). No steroid using players should be on this list and I commend you for not doing so. Josh Hancock, Doc Gooden (one of my all-time favorites, coulda been a hall-of-famer), Steve Howe, Todd Bertuzzi, Tonya Harding(!), Len Bias, Woody Hayes, Bobby Knight, Frank Francisco (threw a chair at a woman), Larry Eustachy, Gary Barnett, Jose Canseco, Tank Johnson, Pacman Jones, Maurice Clarett, Ugi Urbina, Brett Myers, 1919 Chicago White Sox, and Jon Ameche (he literally blew it) hating Tim Hardaway. It is unfortunate that their are more black people on this list, but I think that is because we forget or don’t know all of the jackasses who played before blacks were allowed in the game. Ty Cobb was definitely not the only racist in baseball during his time or before blacks were widely accepted in white run sports.
93. lincoln - January 10th, 2008 at 8:39 am

White people have been getting away with killing black people for umteen years. Pay back is a bitch.
94. evan - January 10th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Mr. Lincoln, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this list is now dumber for having read to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
95. Barnacle - January 10th, 2008 at 9:03 am
Racism and sport go hand in hand. Thats where these sportspeople get the impetus to give such good performances. The best warriors in the past have been ones with indifference to the welfare of the opposing team, ‘not from here’. Look at first hand accounts of any war. Any sport, especially on the local level, is sustained by an undercurrent of racism, about using common identifiers and misconceptions to put the other blokes down. Any difference at all is used to bolster the team’s togetherness and disrupt the concentration of the other team.
To tie this in to what Cyn is saying about cussing, the most skillfull asset to have when you are a member of any sports team is a way to put members of other races down by using a range of fresh, racial taunts. This is one of the traits that is common and underground across all the sports in the world. This is ‘legitimate’ behaviour and is always topical. Thats the way it is, unfortunately.
96. Jackie - January 10th, 2008 at 9:10 am

Well, it’s a good list, but somewhat lacking in sports personalities from other disciplines and from outside North America.
Diego Maradona (arguably the world’s finest soccer player) should be included http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_Maradona
Tonya Harding also deserves a mention http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonya_Harding

jj; i totally agree he shoulda fried,,,,but you didn’t have to use nigger,,guaranteed to inflame, and it doesn’t matter if you are black, people reading can’t tell….
ps; not really fried, ‘cuz I don’t believe in the death penalty,,,,,
102. Mom424 - January 10th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
dischuker; I didn’t take up the debate because I have discovered the futility,,,those who don’t believe in it for personal reasons allow people to make up their own mind, and GENERALLY the vehement anti-abortion crowd is the same crowd that believe homosexuality is god cursed, the bible is the literal truth, and creationism is the way to go..you can’t fight faith with reason much as I try..
for the record, I believe in abortion in cases of incest, rape, and where a pregnancy threatens the life of the mother….(I don’t consider it an abortion in the first few weeks) I don’t believe in birth control as a contraception method except in extraordinary circumstances…ie 11 yr old mom..
103. Mom424 - January 10th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

kiwiboi i’m not racist or retarded(i’m black by the way) i just dont see the problem with the word NIGGER i’m not offended by it and dont see how anyone could be its just a word big deal i think thats the reason we cant stop racism its because we try and change the racist instead people should just stop being offended by words,,,NIGGER SPIC CHINK GOOK FAG a word never killed anyone get over it people,,, Besides blacks do make up the majority of the prison population,, now is that because the legal system is racist or is that because they commit more crimes ,,well i think its obvious that they commit more crimes either that or even the black judges are racist too. people we really need to grow up and stop being so soft skinned ,,as we all learned as children “sticks and stones will break my bones but WORDS will never hurt me
106. StewWriter - January 10th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Holy sweet mother of mercy, I had NO idea this list’s comments were going to escalate into a grudge match over race and animal issues. I can’t wait to do another like this *snickers slyly* Goodness…;-)
107. Cyn - January 10th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
like it or not America is seen as racist…how the rest of the world views itself or how we view them aside…
basically its a given so why add fuel to the fire w/ inciteful word usage and commentary? this is an entertainment list site not some sociopolitical forum expressly set up for debating social or political issues.
so lighten up! think about where you are. how you are representing yourself. relax. be entertained. be entertaining.
108. kiwiboi - January 10th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
jj - I agree that “nigger” is just a word. But it is a word that is universally acknowledged to be grossly offensive…for the very reason that giving offence or being offensive or demeaning is almost always the objective when using it.
Being black does not (in my humble opinion) excuse somebody from using the word “nigger” in a public forum (or anywhere else, for that matter).
Good for you that you are not offended by the word. But that doesn’t mean that others shouldn’t, or won’t be offended when *you* use it.
For what it is worth, I agree with some of your other comments to me; it is, unfortunately, a politically-correct world that we live in.
109. Kelsi - January 10th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Cyn: I really would have to disagree with you on the notion that America is seen as racist, at least within America (I haven’t travelled outside of it). Maybe we haven’t been non-racist for very long and certain inherent prejudices within individuals will always exist, but I have not seen any real intolerance based on race in my life. Maybe I’m sheltered, but I don’t think that I am. I think things have changed.
As for the rest of what you said, lol, HERE HERE!
110. Cyn - January 10th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Kelsi - well, given that i live in the South..i may see things quite differently. i’ve also lived in other parts of the country in vastly different circumstances that has exposed me to racism in more than just the stereotypical white vs black (or any people of color). there is also racism (or more likely classism) w/in racial groups amongst themselves. just one example…black on black crime, especially in the South..is quite an issue. these news stories do make it online and via other media outlets onto the world stage …so like it or not whatever our media deem newsworthy (for whatever reason and we support that w/ our advertising dollars) is what the world sees as us. and no, its not just the South. and no, its not just the US. once you get online and communicate privately w/ individuals from various countries and socio-economic circumstances not only do you learn racism is a human issue not just country/cultural/whatever but also that what you see in the news ain’t always what the private citizen of any place actually lives or believes. humans are a biased bunch! something we exploit for our own agendas. it is the way that it is. do i like it? well, no. but as a student of human nature…i accept that is the brutal reality of not only our time but our species. can we change it? dunno. it is nice to know some folks keep trying.

111. Cyn - January 10th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
btw..thanks for completing your profile. …so i noticed you’re 19. sorry sweetie but to me that makes you a mere child. LOL

i’m old enough to be your grandma. *faints* (or at least mom…i suck at math!) anyway…now its more understandable about your worldview. so you hang onto that innocence as long as you can child.
reality will catch up w/ you soon enough.
112. downhighway61 - January 10th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
i’ll just add my two cents on the racism issue:
i grew up in new york. the high school i went to was very very diverse. our town was 56% white. anyway…. you would think that in an area that is so mixed racism would disappear quickly, and people would learn to accept each other. while i was in school we had very little problems racially. but i noticed after i graduated i met more and more people who weren’t exactly openly racist, but they would make comments that let you know how they really felt. comments against blacks, comments against mexicans, against jews (which sucks, i am one!). so… that racism isn’t just in the south, it’s unfortunately alive in the inner cities of new york also.
113. kiwiboi - January 10th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
downhighway61 - racism and bigotry have always been, and will always be, a part of the human condition, unfortunately.
114. Cyn - January 10th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
racism is a human issue not confined to a particular race or region.
think that’ll be it from me on this topic.
i’m off to read more lists for entertainment purposes only.

TerranRich: Did she get fired? I thought she was suspended for two weeks. Anyway it was a dumb thing on her part because of exactly what you said. The Al Sharpton’s come out in the world.
When something like that is said, the media automatically runs to him for a quote.
Tiger said it was no big deal. When I saw the blurb about her quote on MSN without even reading the article I knew old Al would be quoted and sure enough there he was calling for firing.
In this era, the broadcaster outta know her ***
could be grass. That’s what I meant when I said it was a dumb thing for her to say.
119. alexora - January 11th, 2008 at 11:05 am
hey people, please do try to chill out with this whole racial debate…
Anyway, here’s another disgraced sports person of whom I read today, track and field athlete Marion Jones:

Slammerworm, George Best was from Northern Ireland, indeed hs family home is less than a mile from my own in East Belfast. He was an incredibly talented footballer, who as as been said , blew it all. Sadly his alcoholism killed him. His funeral was televised live and I was one of thousands to pay their respects as his cortege passed by home.
121. kiwiboi - January 11th, 2008 at 11:56 am
George Best was one of the all-time greats.
I met him twice and my wife and son would regularly see him in our village (where his in-laws live). George was never too busy to sign an autograph or to shake your hand.
122. reecedawg - January 11th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
so how in the hell does benoit kill his wife and kid and not even crack the top 10, there has always been a double standard and always will, not to mention the ref that messed up maybe billions of dollars……..lets ponder this
123. reecedawg - January 11th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
sorry meant top 5 for benoit
124. Megatron - January 11th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
One thing that is worth mentioning about this list is the idea that even though some of these guys did stupid shit, not all of them “blew it” if that means helped end their careers. Ray Lewis, Ty Cobb, and Ron Artest all did stupid things, but none of their careers ended because of it and none of them lost out on something like the hall of fame or went to jail for a long time. I would take them off of the list and put Maurice Clarett, Len Bias, and the 1919 Chicago White Sox in their places. Honorable mentions definitely to Josh Hancock, Ugi Urbina, and that asshole who murdered his teammate on the Baylor bball team.
125. Mav - January 12th, 2008 at 3:06 am
#7 is still very hard for me to get straight.
A lot of the police evidence and statements contradicted the later statements.
Like they first said, they found him on the floor and then the later statemenst said that they had found him hung from his weight equipment in his gym. The bibles next to the family when he himself was not religious.
The empty liquor containers found around him, and later his autopsy showed no alcohol in his system but they did find it in his wifes.
The whole case is very very weird.
126. your fuckin’ mother - January 12th, 2008 at 9:30 am
the person who posted number 93 is a typical “cry for me because I’m black” crybaby idiot asshole. Simpson should be severely beaten with an aluminum baseball bat by 6 angry people for 6 hours, then justice would be served. 1919 black sox was just a scandal, not some guys who murdered people. I’ll just put it out there to piss you off, but 7 of 10 are black. no matter how you put it, blacks will never be civilized human beings because they don’t try to be.
127. Crimanon - January 12th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Mother: It’s mentalities like that that keep people on the offensive. Your comment is no more civilized than you say blacks are. Keep comments like this to the SS and 1488 websites. Racist little skidmark.
128. JJ - January 12th, 2008 at 10:40 am
i have to say “your fuckin mother” does make a point its been what like 40 years since King jr and the civil rites movement and the black community as a whole has not done much to improve their situation ,, they say the white man is keepin them down when its there own doing,,,, i say stop smoking crack get out of the gangs stop having kids in highschool and get an education . the only one keeping the black man down is the black man
129. Crimanon - January 12th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Now wasn’t that a much nicer way of saying it. There is, and I agree, with the BET video that they’ve been pushing for awhile. “Brush yo teef, brush yo teef” or what ever it is. Trying to change that way the younger generations are growing up. In the end Everyone needs to take responsibility for their actions. Even “The White Devil” and his tendencies to keep talking trash about but not Helping, AT ALL, with the problems society is having. Can it with the Ni**er shit and be respectable. Stop being on the offensive all of the time.
Since MLK most of the leaders of the African-American community have been hate mongers trying to take BY FORCE what they feel is right. I think MLK would be appalled by the things going on right now. Black on Black, Ghetto mentalities, and Jena 6. I stand by my opinion that we all just need to Shut Up for a while.
130. downhighway61 - January 12th, 2008 at 11:33 am
dang. people are mean. once you’re in a bad situation (drugs/poor/uneducated) it’s very hard to get out of it, no matter who you are. there are people that get out of it, which is great. but you can’t just say “help yourself” when the entire situation goes much deeper than that. it’s hard to just “stop smoking crack” just like people have a hard time “just not smoking.” it’s an addiction! not growing up to be drug addicted or poor or anything like that requires a child to think ahead into the future, which most kids and teens don’t do.
131. Crimanon - January 12th, 2008 at 11:43 am
It’s all up to the parents and I’m sure the parents of today are Old enough to have some common sense. No matter how their parents raised them, they still know that, “This is Screwed up” and they HAVE the ability to keep their kids from doing the same things that “screwed” them up as a kid. Prevention people!!! How hard is it to raise a kid when you know what NOT to do?
132. jbjr - January 12th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Its easy to spew hate behind from the computer.
JJ: Lot of white folks on welfare blame society too.
133. Crimanon - January 12th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
hate/hate; love/love; love/hate; hate/love; love/hatelove. If you understood all of that congratulations.

given the word choice and tone of some the most recent comments…this is why i’ve urged J to post a ‘code of conduct’ here. it is his site, so it is his call.
just be aware word usage, tone and malicious intent are things I NOTICE. believe me..if it were my site to do as i please…i’d be banning people. and deleting comments. but its not.
and this comment is representative of me..not this site, certainly not J.
so children…grow up. behave yourselves. conduct yourselves w/ some degree of decorum ..please.
J - my apologies to you for not clearing this comment prior. its just i got a bit pissed off about this crap. sorry.
135. Alex - January 13th, 2008 at 8:32 am
I thought this was a very good list. Michael Vick, #2, Hell yeah!
136. jeneria - January 13th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Steve Howe is a glaring omission. I met the guy a few times in my hometown of Whitefish, MT. Nice guy, but a total waster.
And I know this is an American-centric list but the footballer (soccer on this side) George Best could be on this list.
137. littleboots - January 13th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
i have an oj in the slammer, it’s a brass pog slammer, with oj behind bars: innocent or guilty? on one side, and the chase on the other, shaped like a throwing star…i got it for my kids when pogs were popular, but kept it from them, cause i figured one day it would be a collector’s item…not that i think profiting from such a gruesome act is cool, but hey, it’s all i have…lol therefore i am all for him gaining notoriety however it happens…any ideas out there that would help me figure out it’s worth would be appreciated tho..
138. JJ - January 13th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
it may be an addiction bvut heres a thought if you never smoke it in the first place then you dont become an addict you have to be pretty fucked up in the first place to think smoking crack is a good idea,, i say if you are stupid enough to do it you deserve what you get
139. cor - January 14th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
jesse - “wow they’re almost all black”
Yep… and im sure the “greatest athletes of all time” list will also consist primarily of blacks.. your point?
I dont understand how a guy who ran a dogfighting ring was higher on the list than a man who suffocated his son and choked his wife. Double Murder/Suicide>Dogfighting host” - very good point.
Marion Jones anyone? That was pretty big.

WOW… They’re ALL white, guess no matter how hard we try us whites will never be civilized…
see how retarded that sounds? Now go smack yourselves!
141. BoboDaHobo - January 15th, 2008 at 6:05 am
This is one for the future… Joey Barton of NEWCASTLE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB, has a bad rep already
142. downhighway61 - January 15th, 2008 at 10:33 am
thank you cor. you said it perfectly.
and jj, do you know what it’s like to move around from ghetto to ghetto with your alcoholic crack smoking mommy? or to be kicked out of your house at 15? or to be put into group homes because your parents can’t take the time to show you right from wrong? people take drugs for the first time for many reasons. you can’t generalize people like that, everyone’s situation is different, and we can’t all make perfect choices all of the time.

144. JJ - January 15th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Downhighway61: oh boo hoo! i dont care what your situation is to smoke crack or not smoke crack is not a difficult choice, EVERTHING tells you crack is bad so you’re just lowlife scum if you do it,,, end of story!!!!
145. downhighway61 - January 16th, 2008 at 12:12 am
the point was if you don’t have parents to teach you right from wrong, then making these choices is a bit harder. and that you can’t take people’s problems at face value. but whatever. i guess i’m full of compassion and a bit naive.
146. JJ - January 16th, 2008 at 12:32 am
you dont need parants to tell you crack is bad ,,,all addicts try blame something else when it was their choice to start no one is ever forced nuthin makes anyone start and i dont care what your life is like people can come from the worst environment and they can become anything they want to ,,sad thing is most that start out “bad” CHOOSE not to improve
147. chsrocket47 - January 16th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
im pretty sure “pacman” jones should be on this list. i think he screwed himself up for good. and ray lewis didnt blow it. in my book, an athlete “blowing it” means they have tarnished their careers for good and as you have said he still tears it up out there. he’s my hero too!
148. Datou - January 19th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Guys, it’s a “Top Ten” list. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of competition. There are plenty of morons out there who could fight it out for the top fifty or top 100.
149. Datou - January 19th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
PS. OJ Simpson is a sad sad reflection of how utterly stupid and vacuous us Americans can be. I mean for god’s sake, how could so many people believe he’s innocent just because he’s the same skin color? The fucking guy got away with a brutal murder in front of the world’s eyes. He deserves to rot in jail for 50 years getting reamed up the ass all day long by a 400lb guy named “Tiny”.
150. Ezekiel 25:17 - February 8th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Are you kidding me or what? Why isn´t John Carlos on this list? :O
151. xande - February 15th, 2008 at 7:42 am
the whole oj thing had othin to do with race even that the jury was black it wasnt race it was fame cause whites would have done the exact same thing if it was jay leno or a jerry sienfeld the exact same crap would have happened
152. chichi - February 22nd, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Wow they’re all American.
I think I would include;
Ben Johnson
Diego Maradona
Paul Gascoigne
George Best
Marion Jones
Sonny Liston
cyclists who have taken so many drugs they’ve died.
Tonya Harding
Justin Gaitlin
etc
153. JazJ - May 28th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
First of all, I wanted so much to believe O.J. was innocent, but as time went by I had to come to the sad realization that such a terrific player had a heart of pure evil. The fact that his children were upstairs at the time of the murders, to me, makes him one sick freak. You don’t run when everything is okay and sadly he ran or at least freaked out. The history of domestic violence was there and he just couldn’t really defend that part, so he had to use methods that were guaranteed to help him, divert attention to someone else. He is the worst kind of criminal and deserves to fry and I’m sure he will someday, if not in this world then the next, if you believe in such things.
Secondly, I think times have changed a lot. Black americans enjoy freedoms now that 30-40 years ago would have never happened. I live in the south and it seems to me the older generation who grew up in those times are the ones that have the hardest time with it. My only problem is to have true equality then people shouldn’t seperate their own culture from the rest. You will never hear of a Miss White America or such because then racism would be called, trust that. I think we live in a too politically correct society. There are people in all cultures that have racism problems and I have viewed it from all angles. My great-grandmother was ripped from her Cherokee family and basically used as a slave in the fields, though she was adopted by that family, but only for that purpose. I could cry foul, my ancestor was a slave and now I’m due restitution, but no, I didn’t know those people and I really don’t want any handouts. Maybe an apology would be nice, but those people can’t apologize because they are dead now. So, I just have to remember to be a better person and worry about what I can do now, because lingering on the past is not a good way to live.
154. Susana - May 29th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Well said, JazJ.
155. Eoin - May 29th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
They are all American basically; and pretty much the same sports over and over. People like George Best and Diego Maradona should perhaps be in it.
156. PR - August 25th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
I only know three people on this list. I think Mike Tyson was the only one who actually played a non american sport. I agree about Hansie. They made a movie about him. I don’t recall OJ even getting that honour!
157. rushfan - September 5th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Great list, but it’s gonna take some time before I get that image of Pete Rose out of my head.
I always loved Daryl Strawberry. I grew up a huge Mets fan in Texas and had lots of fun the year they won the world series. My favorite Met was Lenny Dykstra, though.
158. SuperHero3 - September 29th, 2008 at 10:58 am
You can take Ray Lewis off this list. He recovered his image. You can add Maurice Clarrett to this list. Also add Vince Young who seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. And some explain to me how Shawn Merriman escaped the steroid persecution and riducle. This guy was a big-time user and still got his fancy Nike commercial deal. Ofcourse now he is on the injured reserve with to
