Let’s face it: aside from the obvious flaw that rodents carried and distributed the plague, rats and mice are pretty darn cute little critters. And who else but Hollywood would ride yet another animal wave into money-making oblivion. Many movies have rats and mice in them, but few use them as the main characters playing both antagonist and protagonist. All but a couple here fit that category, and the others use them as an equally supportive role, but of no less importance. Here are ten films with our furry friends.
10. Charlotte’s Web (1973)
Debbie Reynolds, Paul Lynde, and a young Danny Bonaducce supply their voices to a stellar animated feature based around the life, and, as it seems, impending death of a runty pig. Templeton steals the show in this, the superior original, as the gluttonous rat. The video I found is stills against a Sarah McLachlan tune.
9. Stuart Little (1999)
Geena Davis, Hugh Laurie, Michael J. Fox… oh, and the so-adorable-you-want-to-smack-him Johnathan Lipnicki fill out the cast for this animated-meets-live action comedy that really is pretty cute and quite family safe.
8. Ben (1972)
“Where Willard ends, Ben begins” so states the film poster. Lee Montgomery befriends a rat named Ben and soon discovers his real roll as the leader of a crew of rogue rodents.
7. Steamboat Willie (1928)
The cartoon that launched the world’s most famous mouse into the stratosphere. Mickey is the pilot of a steamboat and must outwit Captain Pete in this 8 minute masterpiece.
6. The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
Vincent Price and Barrie Ingham supply voice talent to the animated feature loosely based on the Sherlock Holmes stories. Twists and turns, rescues, and a cliff-hanger finale really make this a Disney feature to see.
5. Willard (2003)
I had to include the remake instead of the 1971 original with Ernest Borgnine because I truly believe that Crispin Glover is the most borderline insane and eccentric actor available today who could, and honestly does, pull off this witty re-imagining. Oh, and with R. Lee Ermey as his boss, you can’t go wring.
4. The Rescuers (1977)
Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor work for the Rescue Aid Society as two brave little mice. An adventure sends them deep into the swamps in search of a kidnapped little girl, Penny, as they enlist the assistance of shrews, rabbits, and a dragon fly named Evinrude. But it’s the diabolical kidnapper Geraldine Page who ultimately steals the show as the horrid Medusa. The music is as sad as it comes, as well.
3. An American Tail (1986)
When animator Don Bluth left Disney to begin his own studio in the early eighties, no one could have imagined he’d produce two of the most beloved movies still adored today. In this one, Feivel is separated from his Russian family as they begin to emigrate to the United States. His adventure leads to new friends, and many bumps and bruises along the way. Oh, and the song SOMEWHERE OUT THERE absolutely makes this 33-year old dude sob like a little girl.
2. Ratatouille (2007)
One of the most amazing films from the Disney/PIXAR library finds Remy the rat alone in Paris in search of a restaurant once ran by his idol. Patton Oswalt and Lou Romano as Remy and Linguini respectively give this kitchen caper all the life it needs as perhaps one of the finest films to take place in and around food.
1. The Secret Of Nimh (1982)
Wil Wheaton, Shannon Doherty, and Dom DeLouise use their amazing voice talents (the former of the trio basically unknown at the point) in this fabulous movie about Mrs. Brisby and her desperate need to relocate her home as the farm’s plow is about to till the land and destroy it. Rats, mice, a great owl, and a bumbling crow fill out the cast in this, Don Bluth’s first film outside of the Disney name. This movie is both beautiful and sad and truly makes you hope that little Timmy can get through pneumonia while his house is being uprooted. Great music, too.
Notable omissions: Rats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Graveyard Shift

Hey guys! Mr. The Author here again! You know, I saw the movie WITCHES (Ravyn) and you’re right, that one did have a lot to do with mice as well, great call! Oh, and ‘torn and frayed’ about Fantasia, I actually ran a few of the Disney Mickey Mouse movies through my head (there are really only half a dozen starring primarily him without supporting cast) and I just settled on STEAMBOAT because it is so significant in his ‘career’, but a good call non the less! thanks!

Witches, that’s the one with Anjelica Huston, right? I remember watching that as a kid, and it made me terrified of old ladies with British accents. I still loved the movie though, haha.

AAH! WITCHES! Based on the Roald Dahl book? Did they even make that into a movie? Yes, yes it is the one I’m thinking of! (Thank you wikipedia.) Wonderful and strage.
But aside from that…awesome list! A fun read. =)

I know the point of this is movies featuring rats, mice. However, putting them in scenes for the sake of putting the rodents in a scene is annoying. Hairspray, Titantic, The Specialist, True Grit,The Best of Times all do this. Snoop Dogg provides the voice of rap-rat giving advice to the hero in Malibu’s Most Wanted. My Gosh, Tom Cruise takes a chunk out of one like he’s eating ribs or something. Of course some are featured in the solitary confinement scenes in prision movies!

Anyone remember the movie from around 65 that had a village infested with rats and set on fire to kill the rats? It had an haunting song that went with it. I think it was a Western. Was it Good, Bad and the Ugly with Clint Eastwood?

I agree with Mouse Hunt. I wound up seeing it instead of Titanic, when my mom-in-law didn’t show to take our daughter to MH. MH was probably more fun. I know you don’t give a damn, so, anyway, IMHO the best part of the movie was Christopher Walken’s hilarious turn as a deranged exterminator.

I really enjoyed reading Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh in school – such a great book. For that reason I won’t watch the film, it just won’t be as good. I thought Ratatouille would have been 1st – I adore that film.

i have a small quibble: it’s mrs. Frisby, not mrs. brisby.
49 lo
April 20th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
it was only “frisby” in the book. in the film it was changed to “brisby” to avoid any issues with the makers of the frisbee toy. obviously, no one could see that the spelling was different in the film’s audio, so they just changed it to brisby.

Two things:
You might consider “Ban and Me”, based on the book of the same name.
“The Great Mouse Detective:” was not loosely based on the Sherlock Holmes” stories, except indirectly. It was based on “Basil of Baker Street” and its sequels.

I loved the Secret of Nimh. I read the book Rats of Nimh first, and I still have the book somewhere- although it’s the movie cover version.
@Gryphon:
I read ahead of the class in Elementary school too. I was put in a special accelerated reading group that only had like one other person in it and we read different books than everyone else. I was a real bookworm back then. My parent had to tear me away from my books.

I had a beloved rat named Tailspin. We adored each other. One day, I had to go on a trip, and planned on being away for about two weeks. It took me three days to arrive at my destination. I called home to tell my husband I’d arrived safely. He interrupted, “Tailspin hasn’t eaten since you you left, and has barely drank any water. He just sits alone and stares. Please come home, or I think he’ll die.” I *immediately* returned home as fast as I could, trading in my bus ticket for a plane ticket.
When I arrived, I went into our bedroom where Tailspin was sitting on a pillow at the head of our queen-sized bed, forlorn and disheveled. “Tailspin?!” Startled, he looked at me with apparent disbelief, let out a squeak that I’m sure was the equivalent of a roar of joy, leaped the *entire* length of the queen bed, landed on my chest, and proceeded to lick (kiss) me nonstop for five minutes. I held him and wept, vowing to never leave him again.
He died about six months later from a cancerous tumor of his eye. The vet tried, but couldn’t remove it all. It didn’t matter. He never came out of the anesthetic. It’s been almost 30 years. I still miss him.
Tailspin is proof: any animal can be a friend. Any animal can love you unconditionally.
