I often hear that modern horror movies are terrible and lack the originality and scare-factor of the films from the “Golden Age” of horror. Every decade produces terrible horror movies and great horror movies, and this decade is no different. So I present here what are, to me, the very best horror movies since the year 2000.
An underrated werewolf movie which brings to mind the classic Carrie, Ginger Snaps is a coming-of-age story with a difference. This movie doesn’t deliver many scares, but has a very good story line and is highly original in a genre starving for new ideas. Ginger Snaps isn’t for everyone but it is well worth a look.
An original, fun, slasher-type movie, Final Destination delivers high on the gore, scares and plot twists and it all makes for a very entertaining way to spend and hour and a half of your afternoon.
Love it or hate it, Saw was original and brought horror back to today’s audiences. The horror industry today would not be the same without this film, and for that I place it at unlucky 13 of my list.
I first noticed Bill Paxton in the vampire film Near Dark. He was by far the stand-out actor of that film. Little did I know how multi-talented he was. Here he directs a great little mystery thriller/horror with a fantastic script. He also does a brilliant job acting in it and we can expect great things from him in the future. Frailty had little box office success, but is a fantastic film. Do not pass it up.
The Descent is a film to watch with friends. The horror is a slow build up, and then suddenly you are immersed in it. It delivers high on the scares and has a great atmosphere. If you ever wanted to go cave diving, see this film… It might just change your mind.
In today’s anything-goes society it is hard to be controversial, extreme or shocking. Hard Candy is all three. It is the story of a 14 year old girl who meets Jeff, a 30 year old pedophile, at a cafe where she is invited to his home. Oh Jeff… What have you gotten yourself into. A superb performance from Ellen Page who would later become the fiery Juno, very well paced, full of plot twists and loaded with worthwhile social commentary. If you haven’t already seen this one, see it soon.
The Pang Brothers deliver a beautiful and chilling ghost story that would later be butchered by an American remake. The original is fantastic and I highly recommend it to fans of such films as The Sixth Sense and The Others, and any fan of J-Horror.
A chilling haunted house type story that is highly underrated. Brad Anderson, director of the amazing ‘The Machinist’, delivers a film to be watched alone and in the dark for maximum effect. It is one of the more unsettling films I have ever seen.
28 Days Later is one of the better ‘rapid-infection’ films out there. It has many scares, original ideas and is a feast for the eyes. Some of the scenes are simply breathtaking. I am assuming most people have seen this film, but if you haven’t, don’t put it off any longer.
In my mind, this is the scariest ghost film ever made. The sound the ghosts make unsettles me every time I think about it and it is a stand out in Asian horror. If you like long lasting, non-gory scares then this is the film for you.
I did not have very high hopes for this when I walked into the theater, but it is one of the most beautiful, touching and downright disturbing horror films I have ever seen. It is a future classic and I hope the Americans, with their upcoming remake, don’t butcher it. By the way, the current DVD release has dreadful subtitles. My advice is to put off buying it until they release the original theatrical subtitles for the film.
This existential horror film is not for the faint of heart. It has lots of gore, many torture scenes and is absolutely relentless. It is also a deep and powerful film that keeps you glued to the screen and, at the same time, begging it to stop. There is about a plot twist every 5 minutes and if the first two sequences don’t get your heart racing, I don’t know what will.
Was anyone expecting this film to be good? I mean, how good can a film be when it’s about monsters, with tentacle and claws galore, that live in a mysterious fog? The answer is very good and this is one of the standout films of this decade. The first 2/3rds of the film are fun, fast paced and tense, but it is the last third of this film that makes it one of the most horrible and horrifying horror movies ever made. The Mist gets a 10/10 from me and is a must-see for every horror fan.
[REC] is a zombie-type film that is actually scary. Indeed it is the only film of its kind that I find scary. The hand-held camcorder theme (ala The Blair With Project) is usually annoying, but it works really well in [REC]. It has a bizarre ending and is unforgiving and relentless. If you can get a copy, do so. Also, do not watch the terrible American remake ‘Quarantine’ first. [REC] is far superior and the American’s do not do justice to it.
Inside is the standout film of the last 10 years to me. It is the only film that has ever had me trembling in my seat, yelling out loud at the screen, feeling physically ill and at the same time thoroughly enjoying it. Call me obsessive but I have seen this film 5 times now and it never disappoints. It is pretty short (only 80 minutes) and has some classic horror movie moments. It is well written, fantastically directed and beautifully acted and is the single most scary horror film I have ever seen. In terms of stylishness and directing expertise it reminds me of The Shining. Every self-respecting horror fan owes it to themselves to see this movie.

July 12th, 2009 at 1:35 am
nice list. like no. two
July 12th, 2009 at 1:35 am
No drag me to hell? i thought that was one of the scariest film i’ve ever seen
July 12th, 2009 at 1:48 am
woooh! saw and final destination for me!
i love horror films!
hahaha!
July 12th, 2009 at 1:49 am
Sweeet, my sorta list
July 12th, 2009 at 1:51 am
@2 conor -drag me to hell?
i thought that was the funniest movie i ever saw!
talking goat, lol!
July 12th, 2009 at 1:55 am
Great list but wrong Inside movie, your looking for the french one with the pregnant lady.
Im pretty keen to see drag me to hell as i have heard the reviews are good.
Inside was the first movie to make me turn the other way and REC is just one of the scariest films ever made.
Havent seen Martys but ill be looking for it now.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:57 am
Good list, good movies, the ring should be one there though that scared the hell out of me.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:57 am
This is the Trailer for the right Inside film.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:58 am
I’m so glad you didn’t include a whole heap of trashy (yet enjoyable) films like Dawn of the Dead. It was a surprisingly good film in itself, yet brought nothing new to the genre. Rec is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen (although admittedly, I watched it in Spanish with French subtitles, so it was a little confusing) but the Mist is still my favourite horror movie.
Great list!
July 12th, 2009 at 2:00 am
@carpe_noctem (9):
Dawn of the Dead was a great film!!!!
July 12th, 2009 at 2:06 am
@Geng1s (6): I saw Drag me to Hell at the local cinema and it is good but very corny.
The best horror film I have seen in the last few years was called Dog Soldiers (2002). I’m surprised its not on this list! The trailer is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_0Ej5N-hFQ
I think horror films have had their hayday – it’s definitly a genre that has gone downhill over the last few years.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:07 am
Fixed video for inside – thanks for pointing that out
July 12th, 2009 at 2:07 am
@Geng1s (10):
Shaun of the dead was better in my opinion
July 12th, 2009 at 2:18 am
@ conor
I agree, drag me to hell(especially when watched on the big screen) was really scary.
I might be in the minority but I think silent hill was an excellent chilling movie.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:23 am
@tripsyman (13):
Thats like Comparing Rotten Apples with another variety of slightly morbid funnier Apples.
Shaun of the Dead is easily one of the best Zomedies ever made. Dance of the Dead is also very good, very low budget but a bit of a giggle.
Ive seen most of Dog soldiers and it wasnt to shabby.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:24 am
American viewers are saturated in their native land with films for theaters and TV that present a certain, if arguably better, quality of film or digital processing, editing, sound and overall depth of production (i.e. lots of money). When other countries film really good stories, despite all sound arguments that ‘more is less’, it is difficult for many of us to adjust our palates, and we long for both steak and sizzle. As the list writer states, we’ll probably screw it up in just that fashion when it comes time for the inevitable US remake. But our screwed up version will eventually make 300-500 million US dollars (after 5 different disc releases), while the original is torrented relentlessly and lionized as “so much better than that crappy (but cool-looking!) American version.
One social flaw of Capitalism that it is honest to a fault; consumers vote with their dollars (francs, yen…) and the majority appear to want crap.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:26 am
@The Duke Capone (14):
Silent hill was majorly under rated, some of creepiest freakin monsters i think ive seen in a film and to be honest while agree with most of this list i think there a few films missing, Silent hill being one of them.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:28 am
Most of them i do not know …which is great
July 12th, 2009 at 2:31 am
I’m really interested in how people rate Horror movies. Do you rate it like any other film, or in terms of gore, action, plot (Not much) ?
I rather liked 28 days later, it probably gave me nightmares for a week with those fast zombies and the thought of having such a thing in your city
July 12th, 2009 at 2:32 am
i personally think gin gwai (the eye) isnt that good.
i’m cantonese (the movie is basically cantonese) and i think its more of a human scare drama than a true scary movie. it wasnt really the type to make you scare alot, just maybe a few scenes were quite terrifying
July 12th, 2009 at 2:32 am
No probs Jamie, i was kinda baffled for a bit thought it was a different inside but then i realised the Driectors were the same.
@MikeB (16):
I consider myself Blessed and Cursed living in N.Z because while its difficult to get a lot of these movies and i do end up downloading quite a few it makes it a lot easier to actually hear about them because we do manage to avoid a lot of the American straight to DVD crap.
The one thing i have noticed the past few years is that Original films are getting harder to come by and the market seems to be flooded with remakes and sequels.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:38 am
@Derek (19):
Im Big on Horror films across the board (hence hald the comments on this list being mine
)
I dont think i look for anyone thing as an example i have seen 4 of the the top 5 on this list and they are all so different in content you would be crazy to compare them.
Rec: is pure shock value
Let the right one in: is a beautiful disturbing film with and underlying horror plot.
The Mist: is classic Stephen King so basically just a bit screwey with cruel twist at the end.
Inside: Is just Brutal and gorey and oh so awesome.
So yeah i guess some people will look for a particular type of horror film but i think the Genre allows the most imagination to be used and the largest variety of sub categories in film.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:39 am
28 days later was awesome, let the right one in was beautifully made, not so horror though…
session 9 i will watch today, sounds great
July 12th, 2009 at 2:40 am
Some of this films aren’t horror, but thrillers.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:40 am
*these
July 12th, 2009 at 2:55 am
@Anonymous Girl London (24):
Which ones?
Frailty i never really thought as of a horror but it does haver supernatural undertones and Hardcandy i have been avoiding as it didnt sound like to a horror to me.
The rest are all horror in my opinion.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:59 am
So many awesome looking films! I don’t know where to start!
July 12th, 2009 at 3:24 am
Number 5 is Swedish! Didn’t know swedish films were that known to the “outside”
I must see it soon.
July 12th, 2009 at 3:29 am
The Descent is so overrated. It’s very chilling when the girls are stuck in the cave and you get this claustrophobic sense… and then it turns into a monster movie. It’s just laughable after that, and both endings are lame.
Also, I think this list should include The Orphange (l’Orfanato). Amazing horror/thriller.
July 12th, 2009 at 3:33 am
Geng1s
Hard Candy is a really great movie, I urge you to watch. That being said, I don’t feel it was a horror either but maybe it is for guys… my husband squirmed around and was disturbed.
NO HOSTEL??? That was one of the best and goriest movies I have seen in a long time.
Finally, Fraility was horrible, The Mist was better as a written story, and I didn’t think any one else saw Session 9 besides myself.
I like these kinds of lists…
July 12th, 2009 at 3:33 am
I am not huge on horror, but I think 28 Days Later was the best that I have seen.
July 12th, 2009 at 3:35 am
I’m agree with most of the list, but i don’t understand how someone can like the horrible bad [rec].
I went to see it with 3 friends and we sleep throughout all the movie.
July 12th, 2009 at 3:39 am
I cant remember was Session 9 shot in Connecticut? I swore I read something about them shooting it at an old State mental hospital there but some people said otherwise.
July 12th, 2009 at 3:48 am
I think in the intro it should be “I often HEAR” Not “I often HERE”
Now to read the list
July 12th, 2009 at 3:52 am
@Geng1s (21): I agree (also as a kiwi) so invariably I have to source most of my movies offshore or download them.
July 12th, 2009 at 3:55 am
I love horror movies, but unfortunately I watched but a few of those on the list.
Frailty is fantastic, and the Saw I is really great in terms of plot twist, and I will be looking forward of seeing all these films on the list, which by the way I love very much since I hate people bashing new films in general.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:13 am
Martyrs is one sick film.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:14 am
i didn’t watch this movie called “Shutter”, but just from my friends’ description of it, and seeing the last bits of the movie alone gives me the creeps. Should be somewhere in the list in my opinion
July 12th, 2009 at 4:18 am
I’m not the biggest fan of horror movies. Nothing really scares me. I was entertained by Saw though. It is a very well crafted movie even though it is similar to Se7en.
Final Destination is rubbish. How can people say that movie is good? The acting is terrible and it is so teen oriented. That one car crash scene was cool though. The movie’s only redeeming feature in my opinion.
28 Days Later is amazing. Danny Boyle, Cillian Murphy and rage infected zombies that sprint. What more could you ask for?
I watched Session 9 recently on my own in a dark room with headphones and it did the trick. It is certainly an eerie movie. I would recommend it.
Was Ringu this decade? If so that should be up there.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:26 am
A good list, with some excellent choices, but what about ‘Dawn of the Dead’ (2004), ‘28 Weeks Later’ (2006), ‘Hostel’ (2005), ‘Dog Soldiers’ (2003), ‘The Orphanage’ (2008), Irreversible’ (2003)?
All of these are powerful but a warning to the last one on my list. It is foreign (French), and is highly disturbing with rape and violence so be warned!
July 12th, 2009 at 4:37 am
Diamond_Dragon: I really realllly wanted to see that film (being a Briton) but couldn’t convince my rather uncultured friends to come with to see it! It really looks awesome.
I love this list. It’s amazing how most horror genre films are made in the USA but a large chunk of the list are from other countries.
I’ve thought of some borderline horror movies that could probably make the list (but probably are horror in a less obvious way?):
Battle Royale (very scary at moments but the movie isn’t really created to scare so I guess it wouldn’t be a horror)
Pan’s Labyrinth (same… probably more of a fantasy)
Sweeney Todd (should have made the list! probably a horror and a VERY good one at that!)
Heard very good reviews for Drag Me To Hell and Grindhouse which both should probably make the list?
Really glad about 28 Days Later being in. Fantastic movie. As bad I feel saying this: it blows any work by Romero out of the water.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:39 am
28 weeks later as pretty good. But what about Cloverfield! I personally LOVE the whole handheld genre (such as Blair Witch Project – which is one of the most chilling movies I have ever seen, and Quarantine). Although I had no idea Quarantine was a remake. Shall look for [REC], sounds like my kind of movie
And Silent Hill was also pretty good. And Dead Silent! They were different yes but the scares were worthwile.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:39 am
Just me again, forgot about a few… ‘Wolf Creek’ (2005), ‘The Host’ (2006), ‘Cloverfield’ (2007).
Enjoy!
July 12th, 2009 at 4:43 am
@Kaze(34)- It was shot in the Danvers State Mental Hospital in Massachusetts. It really added to the authenticity of the movie. I’d say the actors were genuinely freaked out while shooting! If I am ever near there I will definitely check it out.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:44 am
Is ‘The Others’ a horror movie, wasn’t that scary but i like the twist at the end… very well written.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:45 am
I’ve seen the mist and I have to say it was one of the few films that had me screaming at the tv at the end, it was brilliantly done and definitely not your typical horror movie-that bible basher pissed me off sooooo much! However I think the most impressive thing about it is that the ending is different from the book, and I thouht the ending was amazing!
July 12th, 2009 at 4:52 am
Pretty good list – I would have preferred a little more info on the actual plotlines of the movies.
To all of you who keep mentioning Hostel – get over it. That wasn’t a horror movie – it was a snuff film. Awful, exploitive, and just plain stupid.
Dog Soldiers on the other hand was entirely awesome. Kudos to those who’ve mentioned it.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:53 am
Love the list!
Haven’t seen some of these films but I shall be soon as I love all the ones I have seen on here
especially 28 Days Later and Ginger Snaps. Saw 1 was great too, kind of went down hill though! Still watch the 6th one when it comes out though.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:56 am
And Dog Soldiers was also fantastic
July 12th, 2009 at 5:15 am
DOG SOLDIERS?? right… you gotta be kidding me
not too big into horror movies but saw and 28 days later were great.. im gonna have to check out some of these others for sure
July 12th, 2009 at 5:17 am
too many saws though they suck now theyre not the same as the original but 28 weeks later is also great just as good as the first
July 12th, 2009 at 5:20 am
I agree with The Orphange (l’Orfanato) too. I haven’t thought about this movie in a while but thinking about it just now gave me goosebumps. The use of color and shadows in this film is just brilliant. I love this list and especially the comments! I have seen about half the movies but now I have a list of more to watch! Yea!
Oh and does anyone else LOVE to watch freaky movies but regret it when you are afraid a few nights… then start the cycle over again? There MUST be a psychological term for that kind of self inflicted torture!
July 12th, 2009 at 5:25 am
The original [REC]! It warms my heart to see it on the list. It really is one of the most original zombie movies to date. Ironically, Quarantine is just utter shite, despite being a more or less complete replica.
Also, Session 9 is downright eerie. Good choice.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:31 am
I don’t get what was so scary about [REC]….
Sure it was an extremely good movie, but I didn’t get scared once, and I HATE horror movies(because I get scared easily). I’m still terrified of the Groke, and the Ice Princess from Moomin, but the thing at the end of [REC] only startled me for a few seconds.
Other than that, nice list. But it would’ve been better if you had written a short plot summary for all of them…
July 12th, 2009 at 5:46 am
Martyrs is probably one of the most shocking films I’ve ever seen… but I haven’t seen Inside yet.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:47 am
I personally don’t enjoy gross out, horror movies. I like more of the suspense and quiet movies. But my interest is piqued with Session 9, simply because it was directed by Brad Anderson. (The machinist is one of the best movies I have ever seen)
Must point out thaat in the opening description of the list “here” is used when it should be the “hear”.
Great List!!!
July 12th, 2009 at 5:52 am
I am not a true horror fan. I prefer psychological horror over gore anyday. I don’t want a puke fest, just scare me.
I just watched The Unborn. It had potential, but died at the end like it was too rushed or that the director couldn’t bother to come up with a better ending.
@The Duke Capone (14): I thought it was a scary movie as well.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:56 am
I never really though of hard candy as a horror either lol. I saw it a couple years ago, and i was really impressed by it, despite being about 11 lol! But yeh, it wasn’t scary.
And Silent Hill I also saw a while back, after playing the game once or twice, and it didn’t really scare me that much, but it is a brilliant film, it deserves a place on the list I think.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:57 am
The Mist shouldn’t even be on the list, because it was a terrible movie. It wasn’t scary and nothing really happened.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:13 am
“helloh lhistvherse, ihh wahnnahh play a ghame…”
ive only seen 4 movies on the list, and SAW is the best! just saw “angels and demons” last night and was thinking of its similarity with Saw, story/plot/style[i dunno which to use]-wise.
i think japanese horror movies were “in” during the early ’00s. then hollywood purchased them, but since the asian originals were much scarier, hollywood horror lost its shine.
still Saw’s kicks ass!!
anyone seen Wrong Turn 2? seeing those two mutants doing it was just eff’d up and hilariously diturbing.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:21 am
59. What?! Did you see the ending? I’d class a depressing film as a horror in a way.
Some good calls on the list, and it’s cool you’ve put a little-known film at number one. Definately gonna check it. The Descent is horribly overrated to me, mind.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:28 am
…An Inconvenient Truth is scary too.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:30 am
The movie where Nicole Kidman was the leading lady was scary. When in the end she was the ghost?? what do you call that movie.. can’t remember
The EYE though is very scary, the original one.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:45 am
re# 63 it was called the others…very good plot twist…lol
July 12th, 2009 at 6:59 am
Not being well versed in the Horror Genre, I was looking forward to finding a few good movies to try out. The descriptions didn’t really tell me much about any of the movies. I don’t mind the “personal favorites” lists, but I learned nothing about these films. Wasn’t even intrigued enough to click on a clip.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:59 am
Inside had me vomiting my dinner all over my keyboard <_<. Epic violence, gore and just the horror of it all. Also, seeing it happen to and from a pregnant woman was just too over my threshold.
Hard Candy is a horrifying thriller, is what I like to call it. The whole castration sequence was weird. I had the most morbid feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I think all of you completely missed 1408?
July 12th, 2009 at 7:01 am
@ 63: A quick google search should do the trick
July 12th, 2009 at 7:07 am
Nice list. I’m definitely going to have to check out REC and Inside. Let the Right One In was sheer genius. Beautifully shot, scripted, acted and edited. Hollywood will surely screw it up. American audiences really need to appreciate foreign films so that these senseless crap remakes can stop.
The Mist was very entertaining. Hard Candy was more of a thriller than horror, but left me pretty queasy. And the first Saw was pretty smart. The only one worth seeing.
July 12th, 2009 at 7:13 am
@scarlet_tears (63):
Thanks for ruining a movie I have never seen. Be more careful when commenting next time.
July 12th, 2009 at 7:14 am
Loooooove this list! Thanks a bunch for not including films like black christmas, halloween remake, etc etc… I get so effed off when people call them horror movies when they’re slashers!!! I do think that the glory days of horror have gone in the western world, we just don’t seem to push any boundaries when we make movies anymore
oh, and anothe thing I can’t stand in a ’scary’ movie is rape, wh oh why oh why oh why do so many films have to include it??? It’s almost becoming perverse now… It probably would have shocked me in the 80s but not now, it’s almost a staple for a film…
July 12th, 2009 at 7:15 am
Wow 2 french movies in the list, you’re giving me some hope for my country’s artistic production.
I’m really surprised that Inside (A l’intérieur) made number 1. I guess it got much more success (if only from a critical point of view) abroad than here (where is it virtually unknown afaik and only got a few mixed reviews).
July 12th, 2009 at 7:17 am
@ImElvis666 (69): jeez, that movie’s been out for years and you’re not exactly missing the next shawshank redemption lol
July 12th, 2009 at 7:23 am
@Chineapplepunk (72):
Just because it is out for a few years it’s okay to ruin it for people who have not seen it? It was unnecessary and careless to say it. Imagine she said the twist to the Usual Suspects or Fight Club? I said it so she would be more careful in future.
July 12th, 2009 at 7:31 am
@scarlet_tears (63): The Nicole Kidman movie was “The Others” from 2001. It was more creepy than anything, and there was a good plot twist at the end.
ColinH, I wonder about the timing of this list though, as this decade isn’t over yet. And I’m sorry to be picky but isn’t it a mistake to call the list, “Top 15 Horror Films Of The 2000s” as there are many decades left in the 2000s. Maybe it should be, “…The First Decade of the 2000s”?
July 12th, 2009 at 7:39 am
The descent? I hated that movie, it was just awful, as for the others nice list, good choice on 28 days later, such a great movie.
July 12th, 2009 at 7:48 am
I agree with Scarlet_tears (63)
Nicole Kidman is very scary.
SPOILER ALERT:
In the end, ImElvis666 is a whiner.
Thanks for the list. I’ve seen only “28 Days,” and it scared me a whole bunch. Guess I’ll have to rent some movies this week.
July 12th, 2009 at 7:48 am
I saw the original subtitled the eye the grudge and the ring
all three even with subtitles and WITH headphones will scare the crap outta you ..
there are so many tiny little sounds that 5.1 speakers cannot produce.. if you want to get scared watch all of these movies with your headphones on .. it makes so much difference
the pang bros are the kings of horror in my eyes especially from a sound suspense view
July 12th, 2009 at 7:57 am
well…now i know what to do next week when im stuck at home!!! These sound really really good, and i agree with you…americans RUIN all original movies! even i (being american) agree with that one. haha
July 12th, 2009 at 8:28 am
Saw had such an amazing twist at the end!
The Mist! Im glad that was on this list, that had an amazing twist also, very unexpected, and you dont often find horror movies with unpredicatable endings now.
I havent seen Session 9, but just watched the trailor that is posted. Brass AND Hiratio!?
I wanna watch some of these movies now….very good list!!
July 12th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Here is a couple of my 2000 favorites
The Strangers (well made shock fest where the killers do not kill fast but mentally and physically torment.)
The Orphanage (very well made story of ghost children that can’t leave anyone alone and the children are REALLY scary looking!)
Pan’s Labyrinth (yes there is one scary part and the overall atmosphere can be considered horrific.)
July 12th, 2009 at 8:30 am
I’m sorry but the original version of The Mist with Jamie Lee Curtis was loads better than the remake.
July 12th, 2009 at 8:31 am
I’m glad to see the “SAW” franchise here. Man… those movies are almost as good as sex.
And now I have a list of other movies to see….
July 12th, 2009 at 8:32 am
No The Others by Amenabar? Booo!
July 12th, 2009 at 8:37 am
I’m sorry Wickman but JLC was in The Fog, written by John Carpenter, not The Mist, which isn’t a remake but is based on a short story by Stephen King.
July 12th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Never been a horror movie fanatic, but as kids in our teens we used to watch ” SCARY MOVIES ” and go to bed with a poker stick your eyes as big as dinner plates.
And while lying in bed you hear sounds in the house you have never heard before.
I never had nightmares in those days – I had nightelephants.
Thanks for the list ColinH
July 12th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Hard Candy isn’t a horror movie. It’s a Drama/Thriller. And personally, I think the movie is disgusting. A 14-year old girl decided to kill a pedophile, even though he never made any perverted advances towards her, just because he was a pedophile. Really? KILL someone because he’s a pedophile? Isn’t that a little extreme? Wouldn’t you rather send him to prison to be molested himself? This is the first movie that told me “Ellen Page is a hardcore feminist bitch and I should never watch any movies of hers ever again until she calms her man-hating the **** down.” She also has a ****ty attitude in general and I hope one of her co-stars man-up one day and busts her jaw for her.
I’m glad for the inclusion of Saw. The sequels aren’t that great, but the first one was epic. The traps we saw in the movie were elaborate and well thought out, and it’s neat how the big trap that Lawrence and Adam were stuck in played out well.
July 12th, 2009 at 8:59 am
I’m glad you put The Mist on this list. I’ll admit, it took me awhile to get into this movie. It seemed pretty cheesy. However, for the rest of my life, I will never forget the ending – didn’t see that one coming!
July 12th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Oh my, i was just about to send a list when suddenly this came… boo hoo for me, better luck next list…
July 12th, 2009 at 9:04 am
What!? No High Tension?
July 12th, 2009 at 9:05 am
LEt me correct that…. “I WAS JUST ABOUT TO SEND A LIST OF HORROR FILMS of 2000 when suddenly this list came..”
July 12th, 2009 at 9:06 am
What about disaster movie it was so bad it was horrifying
July 12th, 2009 at 9:07 am
and half of the films in this list was in mine… GREAT LIST ANYWAY… i think im going to rent some of the films later…
July 12th, 2009 at 9:07 am
i was hoping high tension will be here too…
July 12th, 2009 at 9:09 am
how about HOSTILE?
July 12th, 2009 at 9:15 am
i expected SAW to be greater than 13th… i love watching the first scene on SAW 3… when daniel’s dad crushed, smashed and broke his feet with a toilet lid to pull his foot out the leash.. that was epic…
July 12th, 2009 at 9:15 am
I know the plot about a “zombie virus” has been done a million times, but I Am Legend gave me nightmares for a week. I think it was the utter sense of isolation that really scared me.
July 12th, 2009 at 9:16 am
High Tension DEFINITELY should have been up there. That was a seriously twisted movie.
July 12th, 2009 at 9:17 am
I also remember MIRROR… starred by Keifer Sutherland.. there are some wicked parts there.. awesome. .
July 12th, 2009 at 9:18 am
MIRRORS
July 12th, 2009 at 9:19 am
Great List!!!
I am so happily surprised you included Ginger Snaps which was great, but very underrated…
Only a few I hadn’t seen like Martyrs, Hard Candy and Rec, but you have given me a few things to try and rent if I can find them.
Thanks!
July 12th, 2009 at 9:34 am
@ 74 Moonbeam
you cant be serious… either youre really dumb or you’re a big fat troll
July 12th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Wolf Creek!!
July 12th, 2009 at 9:34 am
“Inside” is horrific, I couldn’t sit through it based on what I’ve seen on Youtube
At 3:50 they show the pregnant woman burning the attackers face with an aerosol spray and cigarette, and actually show her skin melting off, pretty sick stuff. The next part (8) shows her doing the scissor c-section
July 12th, 2009 at 9:42 am
@bearded defender (62): yeah Al GOre scared the s*** out of me… kidding..
July 12th, 2009 at 9:43 am
WRONG TURN is kinda should be on the list.. atleast 15th.. for me..
July 12th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Oh I totally forgot about Eden Lake. It has one of the most depressing endings. Totally bums you up. (*that didn’t sound right*)
July 12th, 2009 at 9:53 am
I’ve been an avid horror movie addict since I was 8 years old, and sadly, there have been very few really GOOD horror movies offered in recent years.
Most have convoluted plots that take a completely artsy-fartsy turn in a vain or misguided attempt at becoming the new “original” watch word in the genre. What crap!!
Lists like these help me to find some gem that has escaped me, either because of the straight to DVD trend, or because the budget was applied to the movie itself and not a large advertising launch or because as a US LVer, my country just doesn’t seem to spotlight foreign offerings to the theatre.
On that note I’ve added REC, Martyrs, and Hard Candy into my Netflix list.
Thank you for your list, ColinH.
@ImElvis666 (44): Pull a Google on Danvers before you go…I believe the place is now demolished.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:10 am
@ImElvis666 (69): Psst, there’s a twist at the end of the movie….But then you knew that already.
Sorry Dude—-I hate it when people tell me what I’m getting for my Birthday, too.
@Gaara (66): Spoilers suck!!…even inadvertant ones!!! I haven’t seen Hard Candy yet so thanks!
July 12th, 2009 at 10:23 am
I DO love me a good Guillermo Del Toro movie–Does anyone know if “Chronos” will ever be available for rental in the United States?
It’s been in my Netflix queue for over a year with no expected availability in sight.
I’d like to view before I purchase.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:23 am
I watched Ginger Snaps and for some reason i was expecting nudity it never came and as a consequence I hate that movie
Saw rules ass!
Final Destination was awesome I watched it having no idea what it was about, damn I didnt even know it was a horror until people started dying lol
What about Hostel that movie scared the crap out of me and just like with Final Destination I didnt even know it was a horror until they started butchering people, and it has nudity unlike Ginger Snaps which makes it a classic in my eyes anyway.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:27 am
@Maxx the Slash:
Obviously you didn’t fully pay attention near the end. She doesn’t kill him just because he’s a pedophile, she hints at other reasons. And Ellen Page’s choice of role hardly makes her a “hardcore feminist”. In any case, she does a really good acting job in this movie.
I will agree that this isn’t really a horror film, but it is quite good.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Funny how you keep saying “the American’s butchered this or that” Amazing how you butchered basic spelling in your very first sentence. Simple movies for simple minds…
July 12th, 2009 at 10:35 am
@Randy N Roger (112): Who are you making reference to?
A simple way to define your target is to simply click on their name in their comment, and you will get a reference automatically posted into your comment box, like the one I have opened this comment with.

@deeeziner (109):
Cheers for the heads up. That’s a real pity about the hospital being demolished. The building looked amazing and eerie. And that’s without even knowing it was an insane asylum.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:38 am
My faves on this List: hard candy, ginger snaps, martyrs, let the right one in, session 9 and 28 days later.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Not a bad list, although in my opinion The Mist is the worst film I have ever seen, and I’ve seen Waterworld.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:40 am
The author of this article
July 12th, 2009 at 10:47 am
c’mon let the right one in is not an horror film, its a love story…kinda twisted…but love story!!
July 12th, 2009 at 10:48 am
@Maxx the Slash: I think pedophiles should be killed. They never change and can have hundreds of victims in thier lifetimes, ruining every life they touch. Putting them in jail is not enough. Eventually they get out. I am biased, maybe. I have four kids. If anyone did anything to them I would kill them, no problem.
That having been said, I also think Orphanage should be on the list. Scared the crap out of me. Also, for those of you who are afraid of clowns try watching Amusement. It has some rather stupid bits, but one scene involving a clown is really intense. It scared me and I love clowns.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Man I hate the Grudge. And the Ring. Both the original and the American remakes. They were just plain old boring. Then again, ghost genre does nothing for me. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) was MUCH better than all of them combined (even though there were ghosts involved)
I also second (third?) High Tension. Absolutely ADORE that movie.
The Mist was great until the ending- how did Stephen King let them do that to it!! I loved the novella, especially the typical ambiguous King-style ending. The movie just ruined that.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:15 am
@Bengaalse Tijger (101): Wait,…what?
July 12th, 2009 at 11:17 am
Saw is probably my favorite horror movie franchise ever, despite what everyone says. It makes Halloween fun. When you can’t go trick or treating anymore, it’s something to look forward to every year.
I know [REC] is on here, which I have never seen, but Quarantine was the last film in a long time to scare me so relentlessly. I was afraid to go back to my car that night. I woke up the next morning, still terrified of the dark.
And I agree 100% with the Mist. People hate it, but it is the epitome of horror. The ending just leaves you with such a terrible feeling, which is what horror movies should do.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:17 am
@Jason (40): Earlier today I read your comment and it made me wanna watch The Orphanage – which I just did. I just wanna thank you for the suggestion cause this movie is absolutely AWESOME!
July 12th, 2009 at 11:21 am
Glad I came back to this site some new very interesting items which I wanted to know more about. Great work on your site.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:23 am
At (86) Maxx The Slash
I am a huge horror movie fan, and although i have to agree that Hard Candy wasnt exactly a horror film, it was def creepy and distrubing enough to be one. But i have to say that your discription of the movie is a little wrong. Ellen Page’s character wanted to kill the pedophile because he was the last person to see and talk to her friend before she was killed by someone. Ellen Page’s character was certain that it was the pedophile that was responsible for her friend’s death. Especially suince she rooted through his stuff and found a whole bunch of child pornography. Yes, it was a little extreme of a reaction, but her character was supposed to be a pyscho, that’s why it was so creepy that this young girl was such a sadistic killer.
I agreed with most of the movies on this list, and i have seen a majority of them. I must watch Inside, that sounds like a great movie! But i have to say that my favorite movie of all time, and the scariest one I have ever seen, Dead Silence, should have a space on here!
And to all those that thought Drag me to Hell was good, um, it was really the most ridiculous thing thats tried to pass for a horror movie ever. It was more funny than scary, i laughed my a*** off the whole movie.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Pity you didn’t add Ringu (the Japanese version, not the American version) or Repo! The Genetic Opera. Holy shizz those movies scare the crap out of me.
I have a friend whose been trying to get me to watch Let the Right One In for AGES. She told me that it was a love story, but now that it’s a horror movie, I’m thinking of kicking her ass now.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Great list! I hadn’t heard of nr. 1 before I read this and now I’m going to see it as soon as possible. A note though, I would have had The Mist at nr. 2 and Rec at nr. 3. The Mist is really one of the best horror movies I’ve ever seen, I’m hard pressed to find any fault with it whatsoever.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:39 am
“Drag me to hell” had a few very beautifully creepy scenes like when she goes down into the parkhouse and the silken handkerchief follows her around, but most of the time it was just plain disgusting – like a rotten-denture-fetishist had made it, and the “scary” parts was that nasty old hags face jumping at you from the screen, like a silly youtube amateur scary video.
I was surprised how great “session 9″ was, I liked the “ring” and “the eye”, both the original and the remake, I would habe included “the devils backbone” and the immortal “flatliners” in the list. But I get sick by films that just consist of torture and murder. F** it, is there not enough brutality in the world?
July 12th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
get rid of hard candy for sure, a unique movie but it was so thick with it’s own self worth and holier than thou mentality it just came off as absolutely pretentious and hard to watch.
What about the ring? Original or remake we only need one but it gave birth to the grudge and the eye, those movies are completely pale in comparison. Martyrs and Inside are out of the same mindset so I don’t think we need both representing that section (there are a lot to choose form in the last 9 years so make sure to represent a lot of different bodies of work.) How bout The Host? Classic monster movie done right, I think it was the single highest grossing Korean film ever made.
Or Splinter?
I personally hate the descent and think it’s horror movies with the lowest common denominator, and it doesn’t have anything to offer that I haven’t seen before.
House of a 1000 Corpses for uniqueness?
Dawn of the dead remake for showing us it can be done right and improve on the original?
High Tension?
Let the right on in should be first by the way, not really scary but one of the best movies ever made and especially for it’s content (it’s so easy to make vampire movies bad).
July 12th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Also, another comment to make is, the young boy on “The Mist” was the best actor in that movie. He deserves an award for is crying scene!!
July 12th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Good list, I’ll definitely have to watch a few of these.
I love “Hard Candy”. I didn’t know it was considered a horror film; I thought it was more of a suspense… Well, either way, it was creepy, so I guess it counts.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
One I would add would be “Drag Me to Hell.” It was a PERFECT horror in my opinion: fast-paced, tightly-plotted and scream-out-loud-scary! I would also add “The Ring” because, honestly, nothing has ever terrified me like that movie. I haven’t seen most of these, but I’m going to rent “Frailty” tonight after reading about it.
The best thing that horror movies can do is instill a sense of something being wrong–when the monster is slashing at someone, that’s scary, but you can mentally deal with it. What a good horror movie does is unhinge that deepest part of your mind that puts the world into order. When a movie chills you to the bone before a single drop of blood has been spilt, you know you’re in for a good time.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
The Descent is the best horror movie I’ve seen in the last few years. Black Christmas isn’t included on the list but in my opinion its a fun slasher flick. Its not the smartest horror film but it definitely delivers on gore and chills.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
any list of good horror films which includes The Mist has to be regarded as questionable… The Ring could have been substituted for anything on the list and I would have agreed with it
July 12th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Good list, but I must disagree with you on The Mist, which I found to be predictable and boring. Also, where the hell is The Ring!!!!!!?? Its the one remake that the Americans did right.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I’ve seen all of these, hooray! Martyrs and Rec are absolutely amazing, as is The Eye, not the craptastic remake with a ghost restaurant though.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
What an impressive list !!! I’m afraid I’ve never seen “Inside”, but I am going to check it out ASAP !
July 12th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Awesome pics. I’ve seen a few but now want to see the rest. I’m sure someone else must have mentioned it, but if not, another great horror flick is The Devil’s Backbone.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
“Let the right one in” is a real good movie, in a time when vampires are already an overused subject in all sorts of stupid plots (take “Twilight” for example)
.
Once again, a proof that Americans insist on screaming and blood, thinking that will do all the scary stuff.
Very good list
July 12th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Glad to know some many here appreciate Session 9. It is simply an outstanding film, and definitely one to watch alone and in the dark to get the maximum effect.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
This list blows goats it is shallow racist towards America and short sighted. Here’s a good one for ya “life in Europe if America had not been an ally in WW II” it is a true horror…
July 12th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
I meant to say “so many” instead of “some many.” So much for my proofreading skills.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I always liked “Disturbia,” because it seems to me more intelligent most other horror movies. I’m surprised it didn’t even make the list.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
rcs #142: “racist towards America” Honestly? No wonder people think Americans are stupid…
July 12th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
For some reason i was thinking High Tension was in the 90’s but yeah 2003, should deffinatly be on this list. Excellent movie with a great twist (someone should a do a plot twist list. Does Ginger snaps and the Decent really be on this list? I liked the Decent as it was quite original plot wise butnot sure if its really that great.
The strangers was pretty Creepy, one of the better films to come out of the states and even has a few similar scenes to Inside.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
@rcs (142):
your yanking my chain right buddy? half the films on the list are american and im not even sure they all deserve to be there. have you seen any of these movies?
July 12th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
@aaa (144): Disturbia is a horror movie? i thought it was just a suspense thriller, but still is nice, reminds me of a simpsons episode hehe.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Im starting to think this should have been a top 20 list.
The Orphanage
Dawn of the Dead Remake
Silent Hill
High Tension
The Host
Cloverfield
Wolf Creek
The Strangers
House of 1000 corpses
Drag me to Hell
To many to mention, i need to go and buy some dvds
July 12th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
@bearded defender (148):
100% agree, to quote Southpark “Simspons did it ! Simpsons did it!”
July 12th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Take a long look at this list and you will see why people say horror films suck now.Further your contempt for America shows how ignorant you are of Americans outside of the corporate sector. We’ll show you something horrific! We are the original terror of the Japanese.
July 12th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
The “Final Destination” movies are pretty damn creepy. I admit, at first I wrote them off as more “wink-wink, we are skewering the horror genre, aren’t we clever” crap (like “Scream”-I HATE that movie and blame it for very nearly ruining the horror genre) but they aren’t like that at all. The tanning salon scene in “Final Destination 3″ is the stuff of nightmares. Horrifying.
Another good horror movie from the 2000s is “The Convent”, about a Catholic high school taken over by demons. I don’t know anybody who’s seen this movie, but it’s definately worth checking out if you can find it. Scary stuff.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
i have literally just finished watching REC and it was really good, the ending was shocking. i’ve also watched the mist, i only watched it because there was nothing else on tv, and im so glad i did because it was terrifying – mainly because of the way the people in the film reacted to the horror. it was an impressive insight to the way people react to the supernatural (i wanted to slap that woman!) and the ending is absolutely heartbreaking. i’m sure i could think of some other great horror movies (i love the genre) but its late lol. although i do remember watching a film called Madhouse when i was younger which is the only film to scare the crap out of me – great list.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
sweet list, love #6, 7, 12, 13 and 14…not sure about the high ranking of the mist. and i noticed no sixth sense, but overall, great list.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Man I’m really excited by these “little known” movies on the list, AND the ones added in the comments (the orphanage & the machinist)
Really lookin forward to checking them out
I remember seeing INSIDE on another list. I am STILL too terrified to watch it.
I must comment on The Mist though. LOVE Stephan King. Was really excited for the movie & was horribly let down. The twist was great, but it wasn’t the movie that got that right-that was King’s work. I’m totally confident that the book is far superior. Movie was awful. BUT agreed that it’s totally original & cool. But perhaps better suited for a Best Horror Fiction list? Eh?? *hint hint*
July 12th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
WTF? No House of 1000 corpses?
July 12th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
Tale of Two Sisters. See it. It’s brilliant.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
“The Signal” should be on that list somewhere
July 12th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
@bearded defender (148): Maybe your right, I always considered it a horror, but now that I think of it, I’m not so sure.
July 12th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
@rsc (150): You really are retarded, first of all, the Asians have always kicked the American’s asses (perhaps you are familiar with the Vietnam war?), and second the “original terror of the Japanese” would probably be China as they fought each other long before the Americans. (Before you jump to any biased conclusions, I’m Canadian.)
July 12th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
I agree that The Ring should be added (maybe a top 20 list?) … I would also suggest OldBoy — very atmospheric and very scary.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
I was suprised that Let the Right one in didnt get nominated in the foreign sections of the Academy awards. It really Pisses me off how Horrow films get looked over these days.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
@rcs (150):
Let me Guess, you voted for Bush both times right? You probably even scribbled his name down in Byro on the screen during the last Election.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
If you’ve never seen the made for tv version of Ju-on, I can’t recommend it enough. The acting, makeup, and effects are so much more chilling and realistic it is unbelieveable.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
LoL I only watched two out of 15. That was The Grudge and SAW(but SAW 3). And I agree with rla5137 The Ring should be added in this.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
@rcs (150): dude, you sound like Big Brother just wound up the key on their mechanical mouthpiece.
Entertainment, and horror in particular, are a VERY universal theme, and if you want to wax politic why don’t you head over to one of the very heated debate lists here at site.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Where have I been? I haven’t heard of many of these titles. Going to look into Martyrs and Inside.
I highly recommend Hard Candy but wouldn’t call it Horror. Definitely suspense.
Saw parts of Hostel and thought it was utter rubbish.
July 12th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
What was SAW original for again?
The least convincing acting of Cary Elwes career?
A plot that was completely nonsensical and ridiculous?
An extremely boring script with an extremely un-anticlimactic payoff?
A gimic that is basically ripped off from Se7en(Oh wait that’s the opposite of original).
You could have cut Danny Glover’s character completely out of the movie and it wouldn’t have made any difference to the plot. The movie just sucked, no two-words about it.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Haha, Drag Me to Hell ruled! It was so reminiscent of the original Evil Dead series!
July 12th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Why has no one mentioned 1408 or Rose Red? Most of the movies on this list, I found extremely dull. I haven’t been able to be scared by anything lately, and really only a fan of older stuff. this modern era, imo, is not good for horror, all the people capitalising on the communist teenagers and snuff films.
Final Destination: laughable, Fun for the whole family deaths
Hostel: To extreme, also not much plot development.
Drag Me To Hell: lol
Dawn of the Dead: Epic Fail. Original was better, more impending doom!
Then again… I’m a Stephen King nerd, so IDc what you say, lol.
July 12th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
and also The Exorcism of Emily Rose may not be the best exorcism movie but it definitely has its fair share of creepiness.
July 12th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm no “The Ring”? MUCH better than The Grudge. Dark Waters was good too.
July 12th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
@mweb25 (170): @TheOneWhoLoledLast (169):
You guys are making me want to spend the weekend watching Horror movies. Emily Rose was quite disturbing and i think another film that was way underrated and Im Sorry im a huge fan of the Dawn of the Dead remake, how can you deny Zombie Baby. Hell i even like the Texas Chainsaw and Halloween remakes. Friday the 13th errrrrrrr not so much.
July 12th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
ONE MISSED CALL?
July 12th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
I’m not sure if these would be “top 15 of the 2000s”, but I found these to be rather creepy yet very underrated, “Home Movie” and “Calvaire”.
Home Movie was an interesting take on the whole hand-held camera style. It had Adrian Pasdar from “Heroes” and a couple’s two children’s slow descent into pure evil. It was pretty creepy, especially if satanic little kids tend to really freak you out.
Calvaire was really weird and disturbing, althought a little slow at times.
And I agree with the House of 1000 Corpses comments, it deserves mention, it’s definitely entertaining.
July 12th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
I actually hate the mist, it’s predictable wit a horrible ending.
Saw deserves a better credit.
and I think you did a great job putting this list together!
July 12th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
All of these are winners…also really enjoyed “the exorcism of Emily Rose”…
July 12th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
thank god hostel wasnt on this. that movie and part two were so horrible
July 12th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
The Mist? I hated that movie… [REC] was the best on there. Quarentine (Remake) sucked.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Well, i liked this list. And i am too a fan of scary movies so i will have to look at these.
I definitely{[sp] thought Saw was gonna be higher up though.
I was expecting more saws for some reason. Ahha.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
no 30 days of night? i mean its not the greatest movie but its definately one of the most scared ive ever been during a movie. everytime those damn vampires got on screen i would just squirm and fidget and shake until they left. the whole time i was watching i was begging for it to end so i wouldnt have to watch it anymore.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
You forgot a few that are seriously worth mentioning. Dog Soldiers, Nightwatch amd Daywatch. Plus I think The Devils Backbone and the Orphanage and lastly Doomsday! All excellent!
July 12th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
But other than the Japanese pieces of crap on this list not a bad list, altough I was also sort of thinking that it would have been better as a top 20 list.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Hostel should have definately been on this list.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
I also think it’s worth mentioning that the sequel to 28 days later was a crock o’ crap, as most sequels to horror movies are. (Saw maybe being almost an exception to that).
July 12th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
HARD CANDY SUCKED! DON’T WASTE THE HOUR AND 45 MINUTES. BORING AND NOT SCARY AT ALL!
July 12th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
I kept thinking to myself; why does everybody like this Mist movie? I’d seen it, and I thought it was a thorough piece of ****.
Then I realized, it’s The Fog that is the piece of ****, and I’d missed many opportunities to see The Mist as a result of my misconception.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:12 pm
It’s still 2009, and I think it’s worth mentioning that District 9 just came out.
I haven’t actually seen it but the previews made it look very good.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
Jono are you fucking high or something? The mist was a great movie!
July 12th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Yeah, the Mist got a bad rap, in addition to being the best novel adaptation and an epic for all time it’s one of the only films I’ve seen to use CG properly throughout.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
I did not have very high hopes for this when I walked into the theater, but it is one of the most beautiful, touching and downright disturbing horror films I have ever seen. It is a future classic and I hope the Americans, with their upcoming remake, don’t butcher it. By the way, the current DVD release has dreadful subtitles. My advice is to put off buying it until they release the original theatrical subtitles for the film.
July 12th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
I often here that modern horror movies are terrible and lack the originality and scare-factor of the films from the “Golden Age” of horror. Every decade produces terrible horror movies and great horror movies, and this decade is no different. So I present here what are, to me, the very best horror movies since the year 2000
July 12th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
No Shutter(original). You gotta be kidding me!
July 12th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Saw & Final Destination was a great film
July 12th, 2009 at 11:55 pm

July 13th, 2009 at 12:00 am

July 13th, 2009 at 12:20 am
hehe what a loser!
July 13th, 2009 at 12:29 am
Do you have some problems you’d like to talk about?
July 13th, 2009 at 1:20 am
where’s the RING? is it before yr 2000?
July 13th, 2009 at 1:52 am
what about dead silence? it’s quite scary for me..
July 13th, 2009 at 3:37 am
haha seems like a deranged freak craving attention. at least its entertaining pathetic as it is from him
July 13th, 2009 at 4:28 am
The mist was good the first time I watched it, but when i watched it the second time it was so crap..>.>
July 13th, 2009 at 4:56 am
terrifying!!!!!,, enormous horror movies, kep it up GUYZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
July 13th, 2009 at 4:59 am
the mist was fucking terrible.
July 13th, 2009 at 5:10 am
That’s actually a really good list. I’ll admit, I started reading it, thinking there would be no ‘Inside’. But nope, you put it in the exact same position I would have. The only one on your list that didn’t really do it for me is ‘Saw’. ‘Hard Candy’ was a little over rated imo. Thanks for including the much overlooked ‘Ginger Snaps’!
July 13th, 2009 at 5:40 am
nice list! Ju-on and The Eye scared me a lot!
July 13th, 2009 at 5:45 am
The Mist was fantastic, and so are many others on this list.
July 13th, 2009 at 5:51 am
@Ozz (189): Is this who I believe it to be?
July 13th, 2009 at 6:21 am
who made this list? how can grudge beat saw? ginger snaps was such a lousy movie, absolutely horrible acting. where’s the reaping, fallen, house of a thousand corpses???
July 13th, 2009 at 7:06 am
House of a 1000 Corpses is more of a cult movie, many, many people are put off by it and consider it to be well, crappy. The Devils Rejects would have been a much better choice if you had insisted on putting a Zombie movie in there.
Also @Chineapplepunk (70): How are slashers NOT horror movies, that’s quite an absurd statement. The definition of horror is anything that causes dread, fear, revulsion, terror, etc. Horror is an extremely broad genre.
Overall, decent list, but I would have at least swapped out Ginger Snaps (god, that movie grates on my nerves, the girls with their pathetic desperation to be different and how they overly traumatize a girls life to begin with) with Drag Me To Hell. Raimi had finally come back to us horror fans. Also, Grindhouse, or as least Planet Terror needs to be put in there as well; I had never had as much fun at a theater as I did when I saw those two movies. Absolutely wonderful.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:25 am
the mist is a terrible film..bad CGI,bad acting >:(
July 13th, 2009 at 7:54 am
Silent Hill gave me the chills, I loved being scared by it.
I think ideas contribute a lot to how creepy a movie is, the more eerie and disturbing it is , the better it works for me.
Recent horror movies such as the “Haunting in Connecticut” are very prosaic which give you the scares in sudden bursts of sounds. Nothing more. Utter disappointments if you ask me.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:56 am
Give “The Ring” some props. It was the first good American horror movie (I know it was a remake)to come out in awhile and it started the return of good horror movies. It seems like lately things have been a bit dull.
July 13th, 2009 at 7:58 am
Ooh! Anyone seen “Dagon”!
July 13th, 2009 at 8:10 am
I didn’t read past “I often here…” If you can’t proofread even the very first sentence, it usually goes downhill from there.
July 13th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Session 9 has been one of my favorite horror movies for years I have made all of my friends watch it.
July 13th, 2009 at 8:23 am
30 Days of Night should be included on the basis that is it by far the best vampire movie made since The Lost Boys. I saw it by myself in the theaters and while there isn’t an overflow of shock scare (there are some eerie scenes) the landscape and the premise were done well.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:14 am
Extra points for including some excellent foreign entries in addition to terrific oft-overlooked movies like Session 9 and Hard Candy.
However, you lose points for including Saw (siliest ending ever), Final Destination (Death has to make it look like an accident???), and one of the worst horror movie to come out in years: The Mist (spoils a terrific build-up by turning into an uninentional laugher).
July 13th, 2009 at 9:16 am
Horror movies have went down hill in the last decade. Frailty was good and the ending of The Mist is very disturbing. Hated the Descent. I don’t see why critics liked it. Didn’t they have 2 versions of this film from Britain and America with 2 different endings?
I never heard of #’s 1, 2, 4, and 5.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:30 am
What? No Orphanage? you must be crazy. The Descent was laughable.
July 13th, 2009 at 9:51 am
A really good list but I’ve missed:
Calvaire:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407621/
Freeze frame:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363095/
July 13th, 2009 at 10:58 am
wth??? no shutter?? u gotta be kidding me man. thats like the scariest shit ever man. even the sound of intro was scary as shit. it should be in top 5. u guys should definitely check it out.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:07 am
I like the list and have taken note of the few I’ve missed. However, I feel you left out Frontiere(s) and most importantly Dog Soldiers. Ginger Snaps is a good werewolf movie but it can’t measure up to Dog Soldiers mix of Horror/Gore/Suspense/Adrenaline.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:11 am
my congrats.this is indeed a top list.the movie that succeded to haunt me where martyrs.the plot tends to be changing all the time, making you mumbling,”ok,this must be the final twist of plot, how much more can i take???”you’re right,it makes you wanna stop it,but at the same time you become a mazohist by not choosing wisely&let it playing….i loved “let the right one in”.no fungs,no sticks,no crosses,no garlics!!!if vampires exist, they kinda look like this…&yes, everybody,DO NOT SEE [REC]’s awful remake “QUARANTINE”,it is a total dissapointement…forunately i grabbed the original spanish version, cause i have learned my lesson with american-crap-remakes…haven’t seen “inside though,&preparing my stomach for this one….
July 13th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Final Destination! That movie sucks balls! The Mist is right up there with sucking balls also. Where is the Ring, for being rated PG-13 that movie whoops all these listed.
July 13th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Shutter
The Ring
The Unborn
The Cell
those are some REALLY scary movies if you ask me!! they aren’t gory, but the type that really make you jump and keep you on the edge of your seat.
I’ve seen Frailty a million times, and while it IS a super good movie, it’s in no way a horror movie IMO. Much more suspense/thriller.
July 13th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
OH, and The Mist was the DUMBEST movie i have ever seen!! Seriously!!
July 13th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
From the movies I have seen I agree for the most part, but thank you for a few recommendations.
I think you are missing a very important horror movie from the 2000s, The Ring!!
July 13th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
In the intro paragraph the author spells “hear” as “here”. Wrong spelling. Sorry, total pet peeve of mine! I think The Strangers should have been on here. That was bar none the scariest movie I have ever seen. “Is Tamara there?…” *shudder*
July 13th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
86 Maxx the Slash: Hello, did you even SEE Hard Candy? She doesn’t kill him for being a pedophile; she forces him to kill himself for helping murder her friend. DER!
July 13th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
I’m sorry but The Strangers was a bad movie. I’m sick of movies saying “based on a true story” when its almost 100% completely made up.
The director said when he was a kid he heard someone knock on his door and asked for someone who didn’t live there. Later he found out that who ever didn’t answer the door, their house was broken into. No killings or anything like that.
Also, The Strangers, like most horror movies are just ridiculous with the crap we are presented and expected to accept from the characters. Horror movies teach us that people are stupid, which may be true, but come on. No one can be that dumb. They had a shotgun, plenty of places in the house to hide, but somehow get defeated. The movie was a let down.
How many times can Hollywood use the no signal or the battery ran out for cell phones. I hate that.
July 13th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
I loved the first 20 minutes of Jeepers Creepers, how it goes from two kids just riding down the road to abject fear in a snap. Loved it!
July 13th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
@Jay Poe: I respectfully disagree. They got defeated because they were psychologically terrorized. It wasn’t about how they were stupid or their cellphones lost battery power. They were ganged up on by a group of psychos. It was late at night in a remote area and there were many entrances into the home. I don’t know about anyone else but that is WAY more terrifying than the typical slasher movie involving zombies, because it could actually happen!
July 13th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
@tattooedgirly (232): I had high hopes for that movie. The creepy voice behind the door and the doll masks looked awesome but i was let down.
Stupid scenes that I can remember:
1. Scott Speedman is outside pointing the gun at one of them for, it seemed like 5 minutes, never got a shot off. Just shoot!!
2. He goes outside to the car to see if it is okay while leaving his girlfriend in the house alone, after the killers already came into the house. Let’s split up, good idea.
3. Liv tyler falls while running and breaks her ankle.(that has never happened before in horror movies).
4. After they shoot their freind by accident. Why didn’t they stay in that corner until the morning. They have a gun, the bad guys didn’t, and there was only one entrance to the door. Just keep the gun pointing at the door.
I also agree with you that the more realistic movies are the better/ scarier they are. This one just did not do for me. I heard they are making a sequel though.
July 13th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
“Jeepers Creepers” was cool until they started doing typical dumb horror movie character stuff. Now would you go investigate or go to the nearest town and call the police? I liked the remake of “The Hills Have Eyes” because it seems as if the protagonists were really screwed and their only mistake was an honest one: trusting the directions of the gas station attendant.
July 13th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Also, “The Inside” and “The Strangers” has almost the same plot but “The Inside” is much better.
July 13th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
@Jay Poe: Ok, I do have to agree that they did do some stupid things. You have reminded me now. I totally agreed they should never have split up, but stayed in a corner with their gun. But I guess if they did that, there would be no movie. Regardless it scared the living crap outta me! Any horror movie that does that is a good one for me!
July 13th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Bunbunbunbun`
Thanks for your posting on The Mist. I really liked the short story by Stephen King and had high hopes for the movie. To be honest I liked everything about the movie until the last five minutes which ruined the whole thing. The short story ending was really haunting and somewhat thoughtful, but the movie ending was a cheap grab by the director to “shock” people. It totally took me out of the movie and showed me that you can make a really good movie and then ruin the whole thing with “twist ending” simply designed for shock value that isn’t in character with the rest of the story. It’s a shame since the director actually made one of my favorites “The Shawshank Redemption”
July 13th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Nice. I am a big fan of horror films and your entry has given me some to watch.
I have seen some of them.. but most I have not so I shall try see if I can find them. yay~~
Horror = <3
July 13th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
dammit, is there anything the americans dont ruin? UGH.
July 13th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Awesome list. Let The Right One In is my personal fav of this decade.
July 13th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Interesting list. Can’t say I agree with all of it. Kudos to Session 9, Let The Right One In, 28 Days Later and Martyrs.
I suggest you check out French horror flick Sheitan, starring Vincent Cassel. For me, it is hands down the best horror film of the last decade.
Also, Calvaire.
And while not technically a horror film, Hungarian film Taxidermia. It’s a sick film. One of my favs.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
interesting list. I have not seen many of these films. i really like “28 days later”, “saw” and “hard candy” although i would not really regard it as a horror film as such
July 13th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Nice list! There are so many horror flicks I meant to go see, but never could… Meds I used to take made me massively paranoid for a while, and I guess it never quite wore off, lol.
I loved Ginger Snaps, it was a fresh and interesting take on an oft-used genre. And Hard Candy, while not quite horror to me, was brilliant. I’ve always found pedo-baiting an interesting concept. The Mist is the only King story I’ve ever liked beter on film than in writing (the ending is just better). The first Saw was great, but every one after was terrible.
I personally think that Silent Hill and Pan’s Labyrinth would both make great additions to this list. While Pan’s Labyrinth was more of a fantasy, it was one with such horrifying elements that I believe it qualifies just as much as Hard Candy does. As for Silent Hill, I may just be prejudiced because I adore the games, but I think it was filmed very well atmospherically, and in terms of effects. Quite underrated.
July 13th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Aaa you’re tripping fact is everyone is always saying “the Americans ruined it!” No the producers of the film are the ones that handle that bit. I’m a Native American, your Canadian. Think about that while you research things like plague Fleas or the Japanese ground invasion of China ah nevermind like you said you’re Canadian.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
Oh my God, this is the worst list of scary movies in existence. I’ve seen The Mist and it is not even scary at all. Not even a bit. If anything it is a bad movie that I will never watch again. Where is The Others? That is one of the freakiest and scariest films that I have ever seen in my life. Unless by “horror” you mean violent and satanic then The Others should be on here. It has an amazing twist in it and it is downright unsettling, especially the room with all the white blankets. And the first time you watch Signs is also not for the faint hearted.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
what about wolf creek!?
July 14th, 2009 at 12:54 am
Don’t think that Hard Candy can be considered a horror film, more of a suspense.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:47 am
I think that 28 days later was an awesome movie. I personally don’t find the movie Inside to be number one. I’m not sure what I would call the scariest movie of all time, but I think that The Hills Have Eyes was a creepy movie.I did also recently watch The Shining, boy is that movie ever messed up.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:12 am
I can’t watch horrors with ghosts and ghouls, they freak me out too much. When we went to the cinema to watch The Grudge I was on the verge of tears and ready to walk out after 15 minutes. I alept over at my boyfriend’s place for 3 nights cause I couldn’t sleep alone and I kept hearing those aweful creepy noises everywhere I went. It was scary as hell
July 14th, 2009 at 3:27 am
Ok, I don’t usually comment lists, but this time I have to, because you put literally all my favourite recent horror movies on it. I felt happy and weirdly validated to see this. Especially since you left out all those overrated popcorn flicks like Saw and Hostel. Wonderfully done, keep it up.
July 14th, 2009 at 6:00 am
They do not make good horror movies anymore. Saw was good but most others are horrible. I even think the Asian ones are lame. Pathetic that HW is so bankrupt on ideas that they have to borrow from Asia.
July 14th, 2009 at 8:52 am
I hate horror films, but on the other hand zombie/rapid-infection is my favorite genre. Invasion is one of my favorite movies, and I also liked the movie 28 days later. Any suggestions of similar movies ?
PS: I even enjoy zombie dreams ( anyway I wake up before I get eaten ):D
July 14th, 2009 at 11:29 am
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN!!!!
im so glad that an educated person made this list.
as soon as i saw LTROI included i knew you knew what youre talking about.
i would have included the Ring, though. and maybe have left Ju-On out.
but, a good, solid list muchacho.
July 14th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
there are some films here I need to see. I was pleasantly surprised to see Hard Candy on here. Also, despite many negative views on the movie, the first Saw was a good horror film. It brought something new and interesting into the genre. As for Drag Me To Hell, it’s a great horror film in the sense that it is SUPPOSED to be cheesy. It’s well filmed and well written as well as cooky in all the right ways. It had all those things that we love (and joke) about classic cult films. The people who don’t like it are the people who don’t understand it. It takes more than blood and guts to make a GOOD horror film.
July 14th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Great list! Inspires me to go to the nearest video store and actually rent some horror titles. I love how you include various foreign films. Other countries have greatly contributed to the horror genre, so it’s great to see that acknowledged in your list.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
i have to say technically hard candy isn’t really a horror flick but more of a psychological thriller . real good movie. F**ked up, but well done.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Literally just saw The Cave. Basically, people make The Descent into a Pitch Black cave infested with Alien Predators. I wonder why I’m posting it on Top 15…
@JK the Fifth (252): 28 Weeks Later? If you wanna go to the low budget, indie side, check out The Signal.
July 14th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Wow… I would of thought ONE person would have given a shout out for “The Devils Rejects.” One of the creepiest families ever filmed since the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. (The 70’s version, not the recent piece of festering dung they called a remake.)
Some people said in prior posts that it’s the sense of “this could really happen” which makes for GREAT horror films. I agree. “Open Water” FTW! It’s the “not seeing the sharks” factor which chilled me to the bone.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Did anyone else like The Host? I thought it was very intense and the monster freaked me out. Any thoughts. It was the first time I watched a Korean movie, but I was very impressed.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
I like to see horror films that scare me but also can provide a good story. A story that makes sense. So, that in mind, my favourite films are THE OTHERS, SAW and THE DESCENT.
I also saw a couple of years ago a very disturbing french movie called HAUTE TENSION (High Tension). That was bloody scary and gory.
July 14th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Thanks jfrater for curing the brain damage Twilight caused me. Let the right one in is now my favorite movie of the decade, and has restored quite dignity back into to the vampire horror genre.
July 14th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Arrrggh, ColinH! I’ve seen a bunch of these. I liked most of them even if it’s impossible to scare me anymore.
But you included trailers! I didn’t even watch the entire trailer for “Session 9″ before adding it to my Netflix queue. With all these movies to watch, I’m not going to get any editing done!
July 14th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
I think people are too harsh when criticizing modern horror. It seems a lot of people pay lip service to old classics that they haven’t even seen all the way through for the sake of appearing cultured. I find it amazing that people can list off a bunch of modern horror they like and maybe two classics and still write off today’s films as comparative garbage.
On a less pretentious note, this list was quite good. I can see why you didn’t include films like High Tension and The Others, though I loved them both.
July 14th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
I like horror movies but I can’t stand the gore fest ones. I really think gore movies and horror movies should be separated into two genres. I didn’t like most of the movies on this list, but I will check out REC and The Mist. Decent list.
July 14th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
SHUTTER SHUTTER SHUTTER SHUTTER!
ITS A THAILAND MOVIE BUT TO ME IT’S LIKE ONE OF THE SCARIEST MOVIE I’VE EVER SEEN.
July 14th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
I have 2 words for you JFrater. WOLF CREEK.
July 15th, 2009 at 8:48 am
Funny Games?
July 15th, 2009 at 11:26 am
@Jay Poe (230):
Wolf Creek is another one of those completely fictional “Based on a True Story” movies. Sure, it “Could” be true, but The Survivor(s) (not saying who or how many to not be all Spoiler-Boy) never witnesssed any of the Events portrayed in the film that were “Horrific”.
I felt cheated by the ending of the movie. I’m just glad it was Free.
July 15th, 2009 at 11:48 am
@someone (266): I have 2 words for you JFrater. WOLF CREEK.
And I have a few words to add in front of “Wolf Creek”, which would be “Do Not Watch”.
Great list anyway, though a few entries are debateable. I learned of a few I had never heard of, though, and those go on my list to check out.
July 15th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
whoa i was afraid to see what ‘great horror films’ you were about to claim at first but you seriously mentioned my new favorites! damn good list…. inside, martyrs, and let the right one in are movies any horror fan has to watch.
July 15th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
session 9 and gin gwai too!!!
July 15th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Just watched Let the Right One In and it is an AMAZING film, not very gory, although rather disturbing and definitely not the typical vampire movie.
I agree that The Orphanage should be on the list as it has some great scary scenes as well as the emotional undertones that are necessary for any good film. 28 days later was also great, Ginger Snaps is definetely underrated and excellent and Saw was a good idea initially but was ruined with the immemorable sequels. The ending of the Mist left me in shock but I hated the film as a whole.
I think there should be a part two to this list with the excellent movies mentioned in the comments included such as:
Rose Red(it was pretty good)
The Exorcism of Emily Rose(not for everyone but i thought it was terrifying, still am scared to be awake at 3 am)
Sixth Sense(not sure when it was made though)
Open Water (slow movie but is both scary and realistic)
Silent Hill (awesome atmosphere)
Pan’s Labyrinth (one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, although probably not horror)
Altogether, an excellent list! Now going to watch [REC] and Session 9:)
July 15th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
just watched Inside. gruesome. of course the girl makes the typical horror movie mistakes, but definitely creepy, and some very neat moments. another reason why my boyfriend and i can’t A) have a house, and B) live in a first floor apartment. after watching movies like this, there’s no way in hell i can stay alone at night when he gets called into work. i have enough issues with the dark as it is.
tomorrow’s movie, [REC].
July 15th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
I really love THE MIST. It’s a fun watch but it’s really so heartbreaking at the end. So far it’s the best Stephen King novel brought in the big screen.
July 16th, 2009 at 4:57 am
Good list – will be looking for many on Netflix.
Let The Right One In was an amazing movie – glad to see it getting some attention. I’m just going to assume the US remake will ruin it.
The Mist was a terrible movie. Horrible CGI, bad acting and one of the worst endings I’ve seen in a while. I re-read the short story every few years, and the crushing pessimism of the original ending should have been maintained… good story completely ruined.
July 16th, 2009 at 7:03 am
Watched [REC] yesterday and I’m not sure why everybody seems to think the ending is shocking but it was a pretty good film and had me scared a few times throughout.
July 16th, 2009 at 11:28 am
@Maxx the Slash: Yes, Dude, I too agree that most pedophiles are incurable and do more damage than their pathetic lives are woth. But, as already pointed out to you, she killed him for killing her friend as well as being a pedophile. Go back and watch the ending again. And once again she DIDN’T kill him, she gave him a choice and due to his EVIL he made the only rational choice. STOP SAYING SHE KILLED HIM and let people watch the movie and see what really happens.
July 16th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
@ItsJustJake (268): Wolf Creek did suck. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (at least the recent remake), An American Haunting, and Amityville Horror all claim to be true stories as well. All of which suck except for the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I liked Ju-on/ The Grudge series. Japanese and the American version. There was no real story or plot but just the scare factor working for it. It just gets right to the point. Hardly any special effects or CG. Just a women with make-up on. It’s way scarier.
Nothing worse then a unscary movie with a bad plot. Especially one that takes 30 minutes to get to the action.
July 16th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Another good film to check out is A Tale of Two Sisters. It’s an Asian horror film, so you will need to be used to reading subtitles. The American remake, which I believe was called The Uninvited, was terrible. They added different twists, and such that were just not necessary. The original Asian film is a perfect psychological thriller.
July 17th, 2009 at 7:19 am
Has anyone seen SHUTTER?
The scariest movie ever in my opinion.
You definately should check it.
July 17th, 2009 at 8:14 am
I second the “A Tale of Two Sisters” recommendation! The cinematography is beautiful and the acting is excellent.
“Shutter” is one of the better Asian horror films with the creepy girl with long wet hair as the antagonist. The remake was wretched though.
July 17th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
South Park’s spoof on Cloverfield was way better than the movie itself. I think my favorite horror movies from the 2000’s is probably Saw I and Final Destination I. I also really liked Quarantine, so apparently that makes like, four of us who do.
July 17th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
@Sarah (282): I thought Quarantine was okay. Didn’t like the end. I usually like the zombie type movies. I’m sick of the first person view shaky camera thing. Enough is enough. It was cool and new when the Blair Witch came out but it’s just warying thin now.
July 17th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
hostel had a more lasting effect on than saw
July 18th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
But the 2000’s aren’t over yet…
July 18th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
WOW, didn’t expect so many replies so quickly. Thanks all for reading my list. In answer to many of you – I thought Hostel was rubbish, so that is why it is not on my list.
I had to toss up between Dog Soldiers and The Descent as they are both from the same director, and there were so many I wanted to include.
I defend Final Destination. Not a perfect movie by any means, but I thought the concept was fantastic, and I loved how they pulled it off.
I tossed up whether to include Shaun Of The Dead, but I wanted to do strictly horror movies.
I saw Drag Me To Hell just 2 days ago, and I would like to include it as an unofficial Bonus to the list. Sam Raimi is the man!
Jason – Irreversible is not a Horror movie in my opinion, but a very good movie, if you are up for it.
Thanx once again for reading, and I urge all of you horror nuts to watch these films.
July 18th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
In answer to 74, I chose to say “2000’s” because next decade will be 2010’s, then 2020’s, etc.
People are able to see when this list was published and infer that it was from 2000 to July 12th 2009.
July 18th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Also keep in mind that I have seen every horror film on wikipedia’s “list of horror films” from this decade, and then some. That is well over 200 films. I have taken into account ever one of those films and these are the ones that I think take the pudding.
July 18th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
“Take the pudding.” That’s funny. I hope you’re still online, because I want to take this opportunity to ask you a question that’s bugged me since I first read this. What do you mean by “An underrated werewolf movie which brings to mind the classic Carrie?” How is Ginger Snaps like Carrie??
July 19th, 2009 at 2:38 am
*shivers*
July 19th, 2009 at 5:28 am
The original Saw was brilliant, Australian director/co-writer! However, I think that AU could be included here. In my opinion it is a whole new sub-genre of horror in itself, and inevitably something else will follow.
July 19th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Spent the weekend doing the horror thing–
Hard Candy–Definitely a gender movie, the guys in my home all hated it, and now one of my teens hates Ellen Page as well.
Martyrs–Gory, and a plotline premise that is a little hard for the unreligious to wrap their mind around. Was hard to watch at some points–good thing there is a fast forward button on the DVD remote. The final resolution was abrupt and unsatisfying.
A movie I think should be on the list—A Haunting in Connecticut. Only if you are ready to accept what “based on true events” REALLY means.
It means there was this event that as it stands alone, on it’s own merits, isn’t much to speak of…but if you throw in a good writer and the proper filming crew/director you can pop up with an excellent fictional story.
And I found this to be one of the best ghost stories I’ve seen in a while.
Now if you feel that “based on true events” should be synonymous for documentary… then this isn’t your type of movie.
July 19th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
session 9 is one of the worst movies i’ve ever seen.
July 20th, 2009 at 8:06 am
More of a TV show than a film, but Ghostwatch FTW!
July 20th, 2009 at 8:51 am
Yeah, the end got a little silly, but Ghostwatch is creepy as hell. Pre-dates Blair Witch.
July 20th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
the last scene of the mist is sweeeeet. it left my jaw hanging for minutes.
July 20th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
What about Sheitan? Eyeball plucking’s finest.
July 20th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
If you would really like an excellent horror movie, go for Asian Horrors..Some of them are in the list but I have a few additions to make…Anak ni Kumander (featuring Filipino boxing icon and comedian-Manny Pacquiao)…his face alone will scare the S*** out of anyone
July 20th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
I read Listverse every day, and don’t often comment, but I’m sorry – I need to comment here.
The Descent is scarier than any of the movies above it. The point of horror movies is to be scary. And yet The Grudge and The Mist are above it? No, that’s incredibly off. The Mist was alright, but The Grudge wasn’t scary in the least. Just putting it above The Descent makes this list crap. Sorry, but big-time fail here.
July 21st, 2009 at 1:54 am
somebody help me out here….was Audition in this decade or the last? if so, it was by far the freakiest stuff i ever saw. oh btw, Ju-On=No Bueno! couldn’t sleep 4 weeks cause of her……Love the rest of the list….not so much of how many ppl liked Hostel though…..Ugh
July 21st, 2009 at 6:42 am
Excellent List! If only the abysmally lame “Final Destination” were replaced by the creepy “1408″; or for that matter, “High Tension” for which viewing has caused me to no longer answer my door.
July 21st, 2009 at 3:32 pm
This is a great list! I love horror movies but I haven’t seen Rec, Inside, Martyrs, or The Mist. Planning on watching Rec tonight though…
Another movie that could be added to the list is High Tension (french.)
Check it out: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338095/
i loved it
July 21st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
299 – The point of horror is to tell a story, it doesn’t necessarily have to be scary. It has to have a horror theme but some of the best horror movies ever made are not scary in the least. Day Of The Dead (Original), Martin, Nosferatu, etc. The Descent is pretty damn scary, but I think it has been fairly placed on the list
289 – Carrie & Ginger Snaps are about supernatural changes happening to a young lady at the time of her first period. I said it brings Carrie to mind, it is still a very different movie though.
297 – Sheitan is very good, but I gave the French 2 already and I didn’t think Sheitan was good enough to add to the list.
301 – Couldn’t stand 1408, it was a jumbled mess of stupid ideas – Clown in the air vents, time travel, snowing in the apartment – what the hell. If the twist in High Tension a) made any sense, and b) wasn’t so obvious, it would have been on the list. it is very well made and a great throw back to the exploitation films of the 70’s but it disappointed me with the ending.
300 – Audition was this decade but frankly I found it boring. The last 30 minutes were pretty good, but the first 70 were utterly boring. I like Takashi Miike, but not his horror stuff. I like his Yakuza Films (especially Gozu)
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:24 am
Yes!! TY for including Let The Right One In! One of my recent favorites of any genre!
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:49 am
Just going over a few of the replies, I did obviously have to leave out a number of films. Because of this I would like to mention a couple now.
Dog Soldiers – Not on the list because I thought the descent was better
Kairo (Pulse) – Not on the list because I completely forgot, great film, check it out.
Shutter (Original) – Just missed out, but it is a very creepy movie and well worth one’s time.
Drag Me To Hell – Fantastic B-movie by the legendary Sam Raimi of Evil Dead fame. Well worth a look.
Shaun Of The Dead – Simply because this is a horror comedy it did not make the list. Had I put it on the list, I would have placed it at number 4, right behind The Mist.
The Exorcism Of Emily Rose – Because, having looked into what actually happened, I believe Emily to actually have been possessed, I do not consider this a horror it could not make the list, but a fantastic film. If you think the Exorcist is the only good possession movie, you need to watch this one.
A Tale Of Two Sisters – Honourable Mention, it is very good.
Retribution – A wonderful film by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who did the aforementioned Kairo.
273 – Glad to see a girl (not to offend anyone) enjoyed Inside. My girlfriend (now ex-girlfriend) threatened to break up with me if I didn’t turn it off. Don’t worry, I turned it off, she’s my ex for other reasons.
July 22nd, 2009 at 10:02 am
I can’t believe that The Devil’s Rejects didn’t make the list. It was very good and light years ahead of its predecessor House of 1,000 Corpses.
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:45 am
If this sorry list is the “best horror films of the 2000s” then that really shows the pitifully low state of horror in modern cinema. The only horror film of the last 10 years that was actually top class was 1408. “High tension” was insultingly bad, I’m not sure why everybody loves that film so much, it was so bad it hurt. Saw and its sequels was mainly just torture porn rubbish, Final Destination was a pathetic teen film that should never have been released, because there was absolutely no plot. Just lots of gore. Since when was horror just about gore? Horror is pitiful these days. Good list though, it was a good read.
July 22nd, 2009 at 5:05 pm
307 – Have you seen all of the films on this list? Let The Right One In is hardly about the gore, it is a beautiful fairy tale that serves as a relief in a world plagued by Twilight lovers. Inside was an amazingly well made film that had an incredibly dark atmosphere and actually managed to scare me. Martyrs had artistic merit and was about the finest film torture films can be. The asians are making some fantastic ghost films this decade including the two on my list, and the ones I mentioned in post 305. The Descent, Session 9, 28 Days Later and The Mist are all great horror films and [REC] is simply one of the best horror films ever made. 1408 on the other hand is a confused and confusing piece of predictable worthless shite that wasn’t scary in the least. (Glad I got that off my chest).
July 22nd, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Wait… are you serious? You’re claiming that 1408 is “preditable, worthless shite”, while you also think [REC] is “one of the best horror films ever made”? Are you genuinely serious? [REC] is generic, repetitive, boring, highly unoriginal drivel. There is nothing new there. How can you possibly say that? If you found 1408 confusing, then, well, insert insult here, basically. It wasn’t confusing in the least, it was constantly filled will clever references and artistic metaphors. Don’t blame the film just because you missed them all. The Descent was highly mediocre, highly, painfully, irritatingly unoriginal and idiotic in a number of aspects, 28 days later is good at best, and The Mist isn’t horror as far as I’m concerned (although it’s easily the best film on the list that I’ve seen). Vampire films are unoriginal and stupid. Yes, I use “unoriginal” a lot, it’s a big problem for me, because it seems that film-makers don’t put the effort into films as they used to and it really irritates me when we get another film that just constantly rips off ideas that have already been reused to extinction. Originality is an idea grossly overlooked when people are making films.
And I’ve not seen all the films in the list, as I have always avoided ghost films and other supernatural rubbish. So I can’t speak for those. But I’ve seen The Others and it was bloody awful, and The Sixth Sense was chilling, but hardly outstanding. There are some good films here and there, but the horror genre has produced (nearly) nothing good in the last 10 years, hopelessly plagued by torture-porn and idiotic, overdone “killers in the closet” ideas designed to “make you jump” (which is a cheap, pathetic tactic to scare people). It actually offends me when I actually go to the effort to see one of these films and I’m presented with nothing but utter tripe.
July 22nd, 2009 at 8:49 pm
1408, as far as originality is concerned, followed the book as much as it could with no original ideas of its own, and it was filled with what you would call supernatural rubbish. Snowing in the room, clown in the airvents, the carpenters singing ‘it’s only just begun’, the whole ‘has-he-escaped-or-is-it-part-of-his-imagination’ bs. The Grudge and The Eye are far superior to The Others and The Sixth Sense and 1408. The Mist changed the original story enough to be its own movie, and did a bloody good job of turning a potentially terrible movie into a dark and pessimistic horror film. Torture porn is pathetic, but Martyrs is the best torture film ever made and defies the genre. Vampire films are not boring, you may find them so but I suggest you see the truly original ones like Martin, Near Dark and Let The Right One In. [REC] has some high quality scares as well as some well placed cheap scares and is original as far as I’m concerned. I agree that Horror is plagued by unoriginal ideas and remakes, but if you look past those I could easily name 50 horror movies of this decade that were worth making.
July 22nd, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Well, fair enough then.
Thanks for the conversation.
July 23rd, 2009 at 2:00 pm
TWO words: Baby Blues ~ any movie where the mother is the horror and her children are the victims, scary cause no ONE else has really ever done it so Viciously.
July 24th, 2009 at 5:01 am
how many people – the same thoughts
July 24th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
312 – Hm, I haven’t seen it. Going to watch it tonight. Looks good.
313 – Not sure what you mean?
July 25th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
The Mist is absolutely awesome and Patrick Jane acts amazing in it! I’m looking forward to seeing ‘Inside’ and the other films that I haven’t seen.
July 26th, 2009 at 7:59 am
The Decent deserved to be much higher on the list, if only for the reveal of the cave dwellers – in my opinion the best executed scares of horror movies ever. Those that have seen it i’m sure will agree with me. Errie, surprising, and terrifying – the first time i tried to watch descent i was on my own at night – i put it off till the next day i was so unnerved. Next day i watched it while ironing in full daylight and it still scared the hell out of me, and i was raised on horror movies. What Neil Jordan did was incredible. anyone agree with me?
July 27th, 2009 at 11:00 am
1408’s the worst film I’ve ever seen. It’s what i call a circus film, a mixed bowl of nonsensical horse crap.
July 27th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
#3, The Mist, was a TERRIBLE movie. None of the characters were sympathetic or intelligent, and by the end of it I was actively cheering for the monsters to kill the remaining survivors.
I thought Quarantine was decent, I’ll have to rent a subtitled version of REC to watch.
July 27th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
316 – The Descent is fantastic, however I was bored the first time I saw it. Then I gave it another chance and watched it with 8 other people and it is one of the very best horror movies ever made. I am in complete agreement with you.
317 – Again, in complete agreement. Circus film, I’ll have to steal that from you. I hated 1408.
318 – I thought the kid, the father and the other runaways were all very sympathetic.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
The Orphanage is an amazing film and deserves to be on the list. Let the Right One In has a eerie sort of beauty to it that is unique to European films (many creepy scenes in this particular film but the last one was the best). I liked 1408-thought the story was great. Drag Me to Hell had a lot of potential with the story, but I’m sorry, I didn’t like the cheesy, gross-out humor in it. Plus, did that girl really deserve what happened to her? Session 9 was very, very creepy, but a little confusing as to what was really going on. Now, I liked The Others. There were parts in The Others that were also very creepy, and it has some things in common with The Haunting in Connecticut, which I thought was pretty good and not one that blows its whole wad in the trailer, unlike a lot of horror films made today.
Thanks for all the comments! I will definitely have to check out some of the other films on the list. Btw, I did not like Saw, and I wouldn’t call Frailty a horror film. Has anyone out there seen Sublime? Strange, bizarre film.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
Oh, I didn’t like The Grudge, either.
The Ring was pretty scary, though.
July 30th, 2009 at 9:03 am
You must add “Drag Me to Hell” to this list – the best American horror movie since “The Exorcist.” Scary, funny and highly original, all without a single profanity or so much as an exposed nipple.
August 6th, 2009 at 11:28 am
MIST IS ARGUABLY THE BEST STEPHEN KING ADAPTATION SINCE MISERY…AND IT IS AWSUMM!! AND THE REASON FOR IT BEING AWSUMM IS IT’S ENDING…SEEN ALL THE MOVIES ON THE LIST…THERE IS SOME SHUFFLING TO BE DONE…..
1.MARTYRS SHUD BE THE NO.1 FOLLOWED BY INSIDE,MIST AND REC RESPECTIVLY
2.PLZ REMOVE FRAILITY(AT BEST AN AVERAGE THRILLER..NEVER A HORROR)
2.ALSO REMOVE FINAL DESTINATION(VERY CHEAP TEEN TRHILLS),GINGER SNAPS(HIGHLY OVERRATED WAREWOLF SHITE)
3.TRY TO FILL THE EMPLY SPACES BY THE FOLLOWING…………
1.ON PLACE 15 ADD ANY 1 OF CABIN FEVER/THE RUINS
2.ON 14… SPIRAL(2007)
3.FOR OTHERS CHOOSE FROM BLACKSHEEP/DRAG ME TO HELL/3 EXTREMES(TAKASHI MIIKE)….
August 7th, 2009 at 7:34 am
but the myst was the biggest piece of garbage ive ever seen, and if i didnt need to run out of the theater as fast as i did to throw up, i wouldve gotten a refund.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:06 am
the mist is a terrible cliche, the ending was the only part worth watching
August 14th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
watch sweeney todd(just delicious), secret window(scary at d rite places), and hush(believable…nd gwyneth is awesum in it)….
August 15th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Horrorfreak @ 323 – these lists are subjective, but I thought Ginger Snaps was very good and Frailty is certainly a horror film. It may also be a thriller, a religious film or any number of other genres but it definitely falls into the horror category enough to be included and was a great film. Now Cabin Fever WAS a piece of garbage and Spiral was a sequel and is therefore ommited from my list along with all remakes, no matter how good because they lack originality. And I shall defend Final Destination to the grave.
August 15th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
324&325 – The mist is fantastic. End Of Story.
326 – I agree that those are all very good horror, but they don’t make the cut for my list.
August 15th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
the only good the mist have is the end…the rest of the movie sucks.
August 17th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
What about The Ring?
August 19th, 2009 at 4:43 am
I echo the sentiments of most. Where’s ‘The Ring’? It should be on the list. Everyone I know was extremely terrified of it.
August 19th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
@ColinH
LIST OF HORROR MOVIES OF 2000′S DOESN’T CONTAIN ANY OF TAKASHI MIIKE….WTF!!U MUST BE KIDDING!! U NEED TO WATCH SOME MORE MOVIES KID. GROW UP AND LOOK AROUND.TAKSHI IS ARGUABLY COMPARABLE TO ROMAN POLANSKI IN HIS OWN GAME!!!
AND WHAT DO U THINK OF “DANS MA PEUM” /”SHEITAN”/”CACHE”/”SPLINTER”???? AND U CAN SAY WHATEVER TO “PYCHO GORE GUY– ELI ROTH” BUT HIS FIRST EFFORT “CABIN FEVER” WAS A AWSUM DEBUT …..(EVEN TARANTINO ADMITS IT)….DEFEND THAT CHEAP TEEN FLICK AS WELL AS U CAN BUT WHEN U GROW UP AND BECUM REALLY VERSATILE IN THIS GENRE U WILL KNOW THAT IT WAS CRAP!!!!!
August 21st, 2009 at 11:32 pm
323 – I am 21 years old and studying film production at Melbourne University. I thought Sheitan was a very good film, but don’t exactly think of it as horror. I love Takashi, but not for his horror but rather his Yakuza films. I did not like Audition. This is my list, feel free to make your own. Splinter was alright, but it wasn’t anything special and Cabin Fever was simply annoying and Quentin Tarantino happens to have a biased opinion as he is Eli Roth’s producer for two of his other films. I do not base my feelings on what Tarantino thinks and I do not think of him as a god who is always right by any means. He is a talented film director and nothing more. I have seen well over 700 horror films and have a personal collection of over 200 so if that’s what you meant by versatile then I feel that I am versatile. Dans Ma Peau was a superb piece of cinema but by no means was it a horror film and nor was Michael Heneke’s Cache. Michael Heneke happens to be one of my all time favourite film directors and Cache was no exception to his genius but it is NOT a horror film. So off you go, back to your false god Tarantino.
Now to the readers of my list who atleast respect my right to my own opinion. The Ring is a remake and as such I did not include it on my list. The same goes for sequels.
August 23rd, 2009 at 2:26 am
number 7 scared the shit out of me.
im keen to see hard candy, looks really good
August 23rd, 2009 at 4:07 pm
After reading all of that, I still think that ‘High Tension’ should be on the list, although the plot was twisted it was overall a fucking creepy movie. I don’t see why people are trying to insist on ‘Hostel’, when it was just a piece of crap. I’m finding it harder and harder to find a horror movie that doesn’t have naked people in it, it’s starting to get annoying.
-If anyone liked ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ look up ‘Hot Fuzz’ not horror, but it was wicked good. ( :

Horrible list, check out Rob Zombie’s movie. This list is so bad.
September 1st, 2009 at 5:49 pm
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
September 3rd, 2009 at 5:26 am

COLIN H!!! U HAVE TO INCLUDE GOZU AND UZUMAKI ANYHOW IN THAT LIST!!!!
NICE TO C PEOPLE R STILL WATCHIN HORROR….I FEAR THAT THE RECENT CRAP SERVED TO US WILL ULTIMATELY RUIN MY FAV GENRE!!
September 20th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
I wouldn’t consider Hard Candy a horror film. Also, The Mist had some of the worst acting I’ve ever seen.
September 20th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
Love and own every movie on this list with the exception os Saw (it was terrible). Have not seen Inside though… was very happy to see Martyrs and the Descent on here!
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:17 am
Martyrs should be no1 and I saw Inside and the others but Martyrs is very very disturbing. I can’t forget that movie. A good movie made in Europe of course, not that Hollywood bullshit gay movies they’re making today. Good list, Listverse the best. Excuse my english.
October 14th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
Paranormal Activity should be on there.
October 15th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
i love horror films. and by that i do not mean the stupid american ones designed for teens, where the typically big breasted blonde(or brunette if they want to make out she is intelligent) gets attacked and screams for 10 mins before finally dying. or where they have the rule of ‘black man dies first’. not all american horrors are like that, just most of them.
by horror i mean truly terrifying films that make u walk away from it and think ‘wow, that might actually happen to anyone of us’.
i do enjoy the first Saw offerin as it was intelligent. the rest were lame. The Shining was classic horror to me.
October 19th, 2009 at 5:04 am
WHERE’S THE AMITYVILLE HORROR REMAKE!?
one of the scariest movies I have seen. and unlike most, the original wasn’t butchered by the remake.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:22 am
these movies are good and all….but you shuld see this director called Michael Haneke,
i don’t know if you’ve heard of him, actually you’ve probably NEVER heard of him, but hes pretty good, you should check him out……………………. HYPNOSIS
October 28th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
OMFFFFFFFFFFG! Michael Haneke is my favourite director, but he’s not a horror movie director. David Lynch is a favourite too, but again not Horror. And what the hell is with that hypnosis thing, I was hypnotised yesterday! Are you stalking me?
October 29th, 2009 at 12:50 am
personally my favorite is Benny’s Video. pink is all the colors of the rainbow . ben reilly’s clones girlfriend knows what im saying. Santa SiNGs REAl good but enough of that know. still trying to finish this empire.
Behind his eyes he says, ‘I still exist.’
This is the way, step inside
BLIND HYPNOSIS
November 8th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
amittyville horror wasn,t that scary , dawn of the dead was a great m0vie although not that scary, Quarintine was ruined with shitty acting from the girl from dexter her name escapes me, Paranormal activity had some scary moments that actually made my spine tingle although drags on at some moments but is hands down best of 2009
November 9th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Must be on this list:
Paranormal Activity 2009 – excellent horror. I think the husband’s script could have been tweaked but overall, superb. My wife and I were freaked out and with almost no gore.
I am Legend – best apocalypse movie. Many of my favs like 1408, the mist, 28 days are in there, cloverfield, dawn of the dead, knowing, pitch black. When gore is involved, I stop considering it horror.
