State of the Universe: February 2008
Published on February 7, 2008 - 59 Comments
For those of you who are new to the site, each month I write a post to explain some of the stuff that is happening behind the scenes. This is our February edition.
8. New Design and Logo

Our Logo competition was highly successful and resulted in the selection of a great new logo. As a result, I was able to put together a new design of the entire site, taking in to account some of the things that have bothered me about the old design. Most noticeable is the new color scheme and layout; I have removed the left hand panel which has given us a much greater amount of space for the body of our lists.
The first list published that takes advantage of this new space is the Top 10 Badass Ancient Weapons - I was able to incorporate extra images in to the list.
It should also be noted that the site load time according to Alexa has now dropped from 6.9 seconds on average, to 2.5 - an enormous increase which will make your browsing experience much better.
7. The List Universe Online Store

The greatest consequence of our new design and logo has been that we have now been able to launch our online store! You can now buy various items of clothing and merchandise branded with our cool logo. As time goes on I will be adding more merchandise that focuses on specific lists on the site. One thing I would like to do is make a Che Guevara tee-shirt that uses a silhouette of his death mask - if you happen to be a great digital artist that is able to make a silhouette from a photo I have, please let me know! In the picture above you can see some samples of our merchandise - there is much more at the store, so be sure to visit the List Universe Online Store.
6. Advertising

I have now been able to put a lot more thought in to the advertising we are using on the site. This has meant that I have been able to remove two of the adverts. I would like to point out (due to a few comments on another list) that some of our adverts are able to generate a small amount of money just by loading (though the majority need to be clicked to make money) - which means adblocking software prevents us from making money. If you feel it is not too inconvenient, whitelisting the site would be very helpful for us.
5. Servers

We experienced some massive downtime in the last month due to getting to the front page of Fox News for our Top 10 Bizarre Things You Can Buy On Amazon. The traffic hit was great, but it made us realize that our new servers are not exempt from an onslaught of traffic. In order to cope with this we have our hosting company looking at alternatives for us - one of these alternatives is a cluster of servers running behind a load balancer. When a final decision is made I will let you all know. This could involve a little downtime but plenty of warning will be given.
4. The Bible List

I have to mention the Bible List simply because it was such a landmark list. It received well over 1,000 comments! I was completely astonished - as I am sure many of you were. Thank you all for your comments and for keeping it civil! If we can discuss religion in such a civil way, there is virtually nothing that we can not talk about.
3. Your View

This week I decided to trial a new type of list - Your View. It has been greatly successful. The idea is for me to ask a question, give you my own answer, and then let you all share your own views on the topic. The two questions so far have been quite tame, but believe me, I intend to throw in some tough ones! The two lists so far are:
What is the best movie ever made? and
What is the best book ever written?
I hope to publish at least one question a week (on Mondays) - though I may publish more if I feel it is worth doing so.
2. Two Requests

Please tell me what types of lists you would like to see more of. Obviously I realize that certain lists elicit many responses and debate, but I am conscious that I am making the decisions every day on what types of lists you want - let me know so that we can all get the most from the site.
The second request is that you all promote the site amongst friends and family as well as the various social networking sites or forums you frequent - the more traffic we get to the site, the more discussions we get on various topics and the more varying opinions we get. We have been very fortunate to be able to offer the site completely free of charge, and continued (and growing) traffic make that possible! And a big thank you to those of you who have been promoting the site so far - it has had a noticeable impact already!
1. Going Forward

You will be pleased to know that there will be no more major changes to the site for now. Having said that, I am very keen to get your feedback on any changes or improvements we can make. Some features have been lost, but some of these were slowing the site down considerably - so we may have to learn to live with them for now. As always, thanks for your ongoing support of the site! It would not exist if it were not for you all!

Hahaha.. I love the title: State of the Universe… good stuff Jamie.
As far as what I would like to see more of… I can never have to many music and movie lists but I personally really enjoy the history lists… bizarre disappearances, badass weapons etc..
2. Rob - February 7th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Jamie,
What happened to links?
3. jfrater - February 7th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
SocialButterfly: duly noted
Rob: what links?
4. Rob - February 7th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
There used to be a links section on the bar atop the page. After it’s insertion, you posted a few links there and then it stopped. Love to have’em back
5. Taos - February 7th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
no problem helping the little i did :p
6. jfrater - February 7th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Rob: oh - the hot links - others have asked for those back too - I will definitely consider it.
7. Rob - February 7th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
btw, have I mentioned that this is my favorite site…besides youporn??
lol
8. jfrater - February 7th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Rob: I am very pleased to hear that
9. Mom424 - February 7th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Great job, I like the new bigger & better pics. I don’t object to the ads, anything to keep you on the job ya know…I would have preferred the colour scheme reversed. Dark text on blue is easier to read than black on white,,,but it’s a minor complaint
Keep up the great work!
10. SocialButterfly - February 7th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
LOL @ Rob!
11. Anonymous - February 7th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Yay! This site seems to be going in a very good direction. And I’ll oblige number two by telling you that I would like a few conspiracy theory lists, a top ten amazing moments in sports list, and a top ten simple magic tricks with little or no preparation list. And for the Simple Magic Tricks list you should include the Balducci levitation, a video of which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....U&NR=1 It even shows you how to do it.
Good luck and I can’t wait to see this site prosper and grow like a butterfly in spring lol. Sincerely,
Anonymous.
12. Angelina - February 7th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Love the new look! Can’t wait to buy a t-shirt! I love the bizarre lists, especially medical/science related. Love the music and movie lists. Oh, and bring back the Hot links, please!!!!
13. SubliminalDeath666 - February 7th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
This is an AWESOME website!! Except when Jamie leaves for some stupid adventurous vacation and doesn’t update the website…….. then it’s like our version the Dark Ages!
14. Mystern - February 7th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Huh. I didn’t realize there were ‘verse onesies . . . I’ll have to get one for my son. I think the best part of this post is the title . . .
Also, one thing about the new look that I think you should change: we used to be able to click on users names to see their profile, no you can only do that with the top comment posters. I think this should still be included in the new look.
15. jfrater - February 7th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Mystern: I just added the kids wear yesterday
16. Mystern - February 7th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Sweetness. Though I noticed you dodged my other part of the comment with the adroitness of an American politician
17. SocialButterfly - February 7th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
I have to admit I agree with Mystern… maybe I am just being a stalker but I enjoy being able to see everyone else’s profiles… even though I haven’t filled mine out yet.
Seriously though, it helps you understand where they are coming from IMHO anyway.
18. Mystern - February 7th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
YAY! Someone agrees with me! I must get a Listverse bib . . .
19. jfrater - February 7th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Mystern: haha - I will think about a way to put it back - it was a hack last time and I want to do it all right this time - it matters a lot when there are so many comments on each page.
20. Mystern - February 7th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
JF: Okay that makes sense. Thanks for answering that for me. Though, with my limited computer knowledge I must ask, what do you mean by “hack”?
21. Csimmons - February 7th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Lol! State of the universe! Im gonna buy a bunch of listverse stuff!
22. downhighway61 - February 7th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
rob- i think we can all agree that youporn is second to this site. the fact that any person can post their own nasty videos on youporn brings it down a notch.
23. jfrater - February 7th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Mystern: I mean by hack that I hacked it together - with string and glue - when what I should have done is thought it out and done it in a refined way
24. Mystern - February 7th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Ah. What we really need is a place where we can browse through profiles.
25. Ashley - February 7th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
I love the food lists
*drool*
26. stormy617 - February 7th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
I think that the new layout looks great and so does the new logo. As soon as I have a little bit of extra money I am going to buy at the least a couple of shirts.
It will be great just think of the extra advertising you will be getting out of this. All the people that ask hey what is that on your shirt??
And we can say oh hey it’s this great website……you should check it out, it won’t hurt or anything you know just look once. That will be all it will take to have another addict on board LOL
27. Ashley - February 7th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I love the pink t shirts!!
I’d like a list of…. 10 Things to do once you have read the new lists.
Once I have finished reading all the new lists / comments etc for the day I find myself lost.
I mean, I can’t actually do some work while i’m at work, so it would be great to have some suggestions. I know there’s already the top ten boredom busting websites (since I have read most archived lists) … so what to do?
28. Blogball - February 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Hi, I noticed that you are now putting listverse.com on all the photos. Does this mean they are for these sites purposes only?
Which brings me to another question: If someone submits a list can you get your pictures from lets say Google images or do they have to be original photos?
Thanks again for all of your work on this great site.
29. Ginny - February 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
I loved the Bible list, and another Bible list somewhere… The oddities you find in the Bible are entertaining. (God hates figs, lmao)
30. jfrater - February 7th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Blogball: I am happy for people to use the images (as most of them came from Google to start with anyway) - as long as they are downloaded from the site and uploaded to peoples’ own servers - I pay for bandwidth. The branding is because I am starting to use a lot of photos that I have bought from iStockPhoto and it helps to protect my costs. For anyone submitting lists - google is fine for images - I will occasionally replace submitted images but I am happy to get them from there.
31. jfrater - February 7th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Ashley: try the forums once you run out of lists
Lots going on there.
32. Joss - February 7th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
I second the Top 10 Things To Do Once You’ve Read All Of Today’s Lists.
33. Lucy - February 7th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
I would love to see more lists with soundclips/videos. The Top 10 Most Amazing Recording list/s are definitely some of my favorites.
I always find it intriguing to read lists about stuff I wouldn’t have otehrwise known about, such as the Mormon lists or the Top 10 Bizarre Religious Beliefs, etc.
anyways, you’re doing a great job at this site, keep up the amazing work!
34. Kai4a - February 7th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Hey Frates, how about a list of the top 10 lists that shouldn’t be made. Ow, my brain hurts. It’s like the worlds dumbest moebius strip.
35. Shabab - February 7th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Great job with the site Jamie. I must say, this site is a testament to what dedicated hard work and determination can do.Not too long ago each list used to generate on average 60 comments in total, but now the comments hit the hundreds within minutes of publishing a new list.Very very impressive.Keep the lists rolling. Onwards and Upwards ! (Excelsior:)!)
36. jocsboss - February 7th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Good site so far. I like the new layout. I would like to be able to click for profiles, as was previously discussed. I like the longer lists, top 15 or top 20. I would also like dancing girls in my living room, but I don’t think that there is much that you can do to help me with that.
37. corinthian0430 - February 7th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
keep up the great work =^_^=
38. JwJwBean - February 7th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Thank you for communicating and keeping us all informed on the changes. Gotta ge tme a shirt. I am just worried I will buy one and you will change something and I will be bummed because the new thing is what I really wanted and then I have to spend more money and my husband will say “why are you buyng all this listverse stuff?” I will have to hide my addiction and everything will tumble from there. AHHHHHHHH!
Okay sorry. Anyway, I like the bizarre and the crime lists. I also like the music and movie lists. Oh and the religious lists. And the humor lists because I love to laugh.
39. bdizzle - February 7th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
you should have a list about easy pranks or i would also like to see some cool chemistry experiments
40. newsong - February 7th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
I put a link to the site on my links page: http://members.shaw.ca/newsong/links.html
41. riledupone - February 7th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
I’m glad to see the list Universe is unfolding as it should. I too am impressed with the new look, and I’m partial to the history lists. Well, I like all of them. This is the first site I’ve ever repeatedly posted on. I did lurk for several months though. You do great work, jfrater!
42. james ried - February 7th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
jfrater, I have no prob white listing your site to have easier viewing of the lists which keep me motivated throughout the day.
43. DiscHuker - February 7th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
jamie, thank you so much for the work you do to entertain a bunch of people that you don’t know other than because of these lists. i just noticed your logo on my favorite list for the first time. very official.
44. Miss Destiny - February 7th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Well thanks for running a great site, it’s high on my bookmark list! I come here at least once a day but usually more than that because of the multiple lists and the comments. The comments are usually as fun to read as the lists themselves! I’ve been talking to all of my friends about the site and they’ll most likely be dropping by eventually. I’ll be doing some Listverse pimping on Myspace too.
And those shirts look pretty sharp I totally want to pick one up!
45. jfrater - February 8th, 2008 at 12:03 am
Thanks for all the nice comments guys - I appreciate it and it makes it all worthwhile for me
46. Harsha - February 8th, 2008 at 12:05 am
“discuss religion in a civil way” ?!!?…We forgot about Bible dude already!?!? LOL!
Also I think we need more humor lists. Long time we had one of those.
47. jfrater - February 8th, 2008 at 2:17 am
Okay - as requested, Hotlinks are now back and are accessible from the main navigation bar. Submit some links!
48. Cathysferret - February 8th, 2008 at 6:23 am
Jamie: I was just checking out the store and saw the maternity shirts! Brilliant to put the logo where the baby bump is!
BTW, I love the site and can’t get enough… it didn’t take long to get through all the archives… I’m addicted!!
49. jfrater - February 8th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Cathysferret: thanks
I thought it was a neat idea too
As for running out of lists - I am thinking of doing an ebook that will include a bunch of lists not found online! Keep your eyes peeled! I have nearly finished my next list - I will be publishing it within the hour.
50. closet_nerd - February 8th, 2008 at 8:32 am
I only discovered ListVerse recently and this list made me come to realize just how great this site is. The quality of the content and the comments are second to none. Especially how there’s so little flaming retards!
51. Cambrex101 - February 8th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
I personally like the Music lists a lot (although I always get angry because I disagree, lol. There is not nearly enough Queen on those!)
Also, I think an interesting list would be one where you did Top Ten Inaccurate Disney Movies. Where you compare the Disney version to the real one, since most are based on old stories….
52. jocsboss - February 10th, 2008 at 7:14 am
I think that it would be nice if you could put the name of the list contributer under the name of the list instead of at the end of the list. They deserve it.
53. JwJwBean - February 10th, 2008 at 8:23 am
I was just thinking that last night. I also read a list trying to see it from the writer’s point of view. I feel from reading most of the comments I can guess which way someone will sway with the choices. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised. It really confuses me when I think it is Jamie and I find out it was someone else all together.
54. devilishgrin66 - February 13th, 2008 at 3:42 am
Top XX saddest TV episodes.

56. Brian Moo - February 15th, 2008 at 1:21 am
I thought we agreed Klaus Nomi was to be our mascot, Jamie.
57. stormy617 - February 18th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
I really like the new shirt you just introduced on the new list, but you really need to make a mouse pad. LOL That was something I was looking for when I went looking at your new store to see what I am going to buy!!!
58. 23RedLeader - February 28th, 2008 at 11:21 am
well…im farily new to the site (ive had a profile for about a month now) and there is not much that i would have you change. i love this site. im on the computer here at school for three of my six class hours and it really helps me burn my downtime. thanks and keep up the good work
-ken-
59. zeppelingod - March 7th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Great Job!!
I’m new to this site as well, been here a couple of weeks and love it.
Although, I noticed in the ‘10 Modern Cases of Feral Children’ list, the size of the font is small and looks grey almost. It started bugging my eyes…..then again maybe I should just get off the computer after 4 or 5 hours
lol
