Top 10 Action Movie Face Offs
Published on February 26, 2008 - 189 Comments
What’s better than a movie with an absolutely awesome hero or an absolutely awesome villain? How about a movie that features both? When the movie doesn’t revolve around one character, but two strong characters fighting one another, that’s where some films really get a chance to shine. Here are ten of the best movie face-offs in Hollywood history.
10. Superman II 1980
Superman vs. General Zod. Although not the best Superman movie, General Zod and his henchmen might be the most ruthless and impressive villains that Superman faces in any of the films in this series. It’s hard to argue Superman as not being an awesome hero, but the three outlaws led by General Zod are equally intense villains, and gave the man of steel all he could handle in this great movie face off.
9. Die Hard 1988
Detective John McClane vs. Hans Gruber. John McClane is one of Bruce Willis’s most beloved characters. He is a gritty hero who knows how to fight and get the job done, even against a whole group of terrorists. Hans Gruber, though, often doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He is an intensely cold man who has no value on human life, whether it opposes him or even if it’s one of his own men. He even forces McClane into a stand off at the end, and so even behind a refined accent and fancy suit, Hans is one bad guy you don’t want to mess with.
8. Seven 1995
Detectives David Mills & William Somerset vs. John Doe. Can a bad guy be so evil that he makes this list even with only ten minutes of screen time? Absolutely. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman track down the serial killer only known as “John Doe,” a man who is choosing his victims based on the seven deadly sins. He mocks the detectives as they try to track him down, ending with one of the most intense movie twists in Hollywood history. This is an amazing movie, and Kevin Spacey as John Doe comes across as the scariest type of sociopath. The detectives vs. John Doe definitely make the list of amazing Hollywood face offs.
7. Assassins 1995
Robert Rath vs. Miguel Bain. This movie is made for a face off list, as two professional assassins face off against one another. Robert Rath, played by Sylvester Stallone is the older experienced professional of twenty years, widely considered one of the best in the world, and he is set to face off against Miguel Bain, played by Antonio Banderas, a young assassin who wants to be considered the best in the world. These two go at it with some scenes that will blow your mind, making these two of the best bad guys to face off in a Hollywood movie.
6. Heat 1995
Lt. Vincent Hanna vs. Neil McCauley & Chris Shiherlis. Al Pacino against Robert de Niro, Val Kilmer, and company. This is the story of an obsessive LAPD detective against a ruthless group of bank robbers and killers. When this movie was first released, the shoot out scene was legendary, raising the bar for every movie to follow and keeping this film on the “gotta’ see that movie” list years later.
5. Star Wars 1977
Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader, honorable mention Hans Solo vs. Boba Fett. The Star Wars trilogy has two of the all time classic face offs. Not only does the son against father face off between Jedi Luke Skywalker and father Darth Vader one of the most famous hero vs. villain match ups in movie history, but renegade Hans Solo vs. intergalactic bounty hunter Boba Fett takes a very honorable second place.
4. Batman 1989
The Dark Knight vs. The Joker. Michael Keaton had perhaps the best portrayal of Batman, and he certainly beats out Val Kilmer’s and George Clooney’s Batman. Add in the amazing performance by Jack Nicholson as the crazy joker (”Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?”) and you have one of the all time classic showdowns in movie history.
3. Blade 1998
Blade vs. Deacon Frost. This one was a no brainer. On one side you have Blade, the Day Walker, a half vampire half human who has all the strengths of a vampire and none of the weaknesses. On the other side you have a vampire lord who becomes a vampire god. That’s one heck of a showdown. Evil doing good, versus true pure evil. This is one of the great all time ending fight scenes in an action flick, and you couldn’t ask for a better match up than these two juggernauts.
2. Face-Off 1997
Sean Archer vs. Castor Troy. This would seem to be the movie designed for this topic. Sean Archer (first John Travolta, then Nicolas Cage) is an FBI agent chasing down terrorist Castor Troy (first Nicholas Cage, then John Travolta). Troy is captured, but a strange technology allows them to exchange faces so Archer can infiltrate the terrorist organization. Trouble is, Troy manages to escape with Archer’s face. This is an amazing film, which was fun for both actors as each was a bad guy and a good guy for half the film. A smart, strong movie, the final show down pays off to the amazing build up. If you haven’t seen this one, you need to.
1. Highlander 1986
Connor MacLeod vs. The Kurgan. Maybe I’m a little biased, but how can the ultimate face off not involve the movie with the motto “There can be only one!”? In a world of immortals, there eventually can only be two left, and then one. The Kurgan is just a nasty, immoral, power hungry villain who thirsts for the blood of other immortals. Connor MacLeod is a Scottish highlander, one of the best warriors in the world, another immortal who wants to avenge his friend’s death and his first wife’s rape. The two immortals meet in combat, and the fight is to the death because there can be only one.

wow 10 of my fave movies (except blade
and good job including Zod, he was such a frightening bad ass
how about bringing him back for a new movie
2. islanderbst - February 26th, 2008 at 10:52 am
hey wait, wheres Kirk vs. Kahn?!?
3. Chris - February 26th, 2008 at 11:01 am
I don’t know if this really fits into this category, but Arnold vs Predator, or Arnold vs any of the terminators are pretty good too.
4. SocialButterfly - February 26th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Highlander!!! I love that movie… yay!!
I have to say though, as much as I love Highlander, Star Wars should be first.
As a side note: did anyone see the episode of Robot Chicken that has Lindsay Lohan battling the other teen starlets (and eventually Sean Connery) in a Highlander battle??
5. Purdnasty - February 26th, 2008 at 11:01 am
optimus prime vs. megan tron, in the ORIGINAL 86 transformers movie!
6. Purdnasty - February 26th, 2008 at 11:02 am
megatron*, long night haha
7. SocialButterfly - February 26th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Chris: The Terminator fight in #2 was by far my favourite but having him battle a woman in #3 was pretty impressive too.
8. mfloryan - February 26th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Neo V. Agent Smith……?!?!?!?!
9. Ginger Lee - February 26th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Bill the Butcher and Amsterdam Vallon in “Gangs of New York”?
Very well choreographed fight scene.
10. rational - February 26th, 2008 at 11:13 am
i love the final scene in Bruce Lees “Enter the Dragon” i forget the characters names but the dude with the knife claw contraption in the room of mirrors
11. Ginger Lee - February 26th, 2008 at 11:15 am
And thank you Shane for adding to the consensus that Michael Keaton was the best Batman.

12. cparker - February 26th, 2008 at 11:19 am
i normally agree with most of your lists, however not even close on this one. i love star wars, batman, and maybe heat. this is a personally bias category. i like:
B vs Bill (kill Bill)
rocky vs creed (live in philly)
clarice vs hannibal (weird but still one against the other)
he man vs. skeletor (this one i am kidding)
13. TheAwesome - February 26th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Yeah, Neo v. Agent Smith should have been on there, seeing as how that fight occurs across three different films and two different worlds.
14. Mom424 - February 26th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I liked all these movies,(’cept Superman II), even the damn hokey ones! Good list. I really enjoyed the original Blade, kick ass action and humour, I must be among the minority.
Beat on me if you like, but I prefer the new Batman, Christian Bale.
15. Ari-chan - February 26th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Blegh…hated Highlander, other than that the list was realy well done
16. SlickWilly - February 26th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Hmmm….I disagree with these assertions about Superman II. With the possible exception of Spiderman II, the director’s cut (*not* the original theatrical version) of Superman II is the greatest superhero movie ever made.
17. SocialButterfly - February 26th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Oohh, I didn’t even think about Neo Vs. Smith… hmm yeah that would be one to add on.
cparker: The Bride Vs. The Crazy 88!!
18. Charly - February 26th, 2008 at 11:50 am
OMG how could you forget Neo vs Smith, Rocky vs Apollo, Yoda vs Dooku, Anakin vs Obi Wan, Dumbledore vs The dark Lord, Achilles vs Hector…
Blade’s ending really sucked, I expected an espectacular and massive fight vs a God, but it was really really crappy, not even in a top 20.
19. JOE ROSSON - February 26th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I think another epic matchup missed is Ripley vs the alien/aliens!!
20. Shane S. - February 26th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
The Obi-Wan v. Anakin face off in Episode III was WAY more awesum than Skywalker and Vader! Come on, they rode platforms on a lava river fer cryin’ out loud!!!
21. DanOhh - February 26th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Stallone vs. The English Language
22. Everlast - February 26th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Decent list, but I totally disagree with the placement, and would probably remove blade, definitely remove assassins, that movie sucked hardcore, and probably have Heat as #1.
23. Everlast - February 26th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Obi-Wan v. Anakin was extremely lame, George Lucas managed to do the impossible, make special effects not special anymore. that fight made me go “m’eh” and then proceed to quickly forget about it.
24. Peter - February 26th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Nice list, though I personally disagree with a comment made in number 4. I personally think Batman Begins has been the best portrayal of Batman, but thats just my opinion.
25. Peter - February 26th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Damm, would have edited my last post if I could. When was this list made, as someone commented on Neo vs. Agent smith, and thats another good one. Seeing as how the most recent movie is 1997, I think the list may be too old to mention some of the newer movies.
26. DanOhh - February 26th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Keanu Reeves vs. Acting
27. DanOhh - February 26th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Al Pacino vs. Over-acting
28. Zach - February 26th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
How about Maximus vs the Emporer? That really was an epic battle between good and evil. Many say that movie is overrated, but I couldn’t disagree more. One of my all-time favorites.
And to get a bit existential, how about William Munny battling himself? Only Clint could pull that off- he truly was facing off with himself. The internal battle between what he longs to be vs what he used to be.
This is nit-picky, but since the list is titled “Action Movie Face-offs”- I’ve never thought of Seven or Heat as action movies. They both contain great action scenes, but are clearly more dramas in my opinion. Just sayin’.
29. badlist - February 26th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
im trying to be very productive to this list community… BUT it is Han Solo NOT Hans Solo. He is not Swedish.
That being said pretty good list. I don’t say it often but you’re about spot on in this list. congrats hombre.
30. badlist - February 26th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

36. Everlast - February 26th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Bucslim,
more like Tequila v every bad guy in china- Hard Boiled
love the movie,
although i think the best face off of that movie is his partner vs the bad guy with the eye patch. Cant recall the names. should i feel really guilt when i laugh during the hospital scene. Where these two are fighting and suddenly find a group of patients between them, they silently agree to stop fighting and let them move out of the way, when the head boss comes in and guns them all down? sorry, i just couldnt help but laugh at the part
37. bucslim - February 26th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Everlast - have you seen the other John Woo / Chow Yun Fat Hong Kong Movies? The Killer and A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2? Awesome stuff man!

39. SocialButterfly - February 26th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
bucslim: I didn’t know you were a fan of The Princess Bride, perhaps though a better one from that movie would be Inigo Montoya vs. the 6 fingered man
40. Csimmons - February 26th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Great list! 8 of these I love, the other 2 (Blade and Heat) i didn’t like.

71. Lizzie - February 26th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Great list, though think Star Wars should be higher.
And definitely an honorable mention for the Princess Bride - Inigo v Count Rogan.
72. Nelia - February 26th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Haha, I love some of the things that people have come up with. I think Sam Jackson vs. the Motherfuckin’ snakes is probably my favorite so far.
Ae - You beat me to Equilibruim. I am not surprised it isn’t on the list, because it is a little more obscure. I might have put Bale vs. Diggs, just because their little war of wits has such a funny ending. Probably my second favorite action movie of all time (nothing beats my love of Jaws :))
I would definitely have put down Terminator 2, great matchup.
As for the Batman debate… Now I love Michael Keaton, and I love his Batman, but Bale is just head and shoulders over most actors today, as far as I am concerned. He made Batman more of a real person, with realistic strengths and weaknesses. Not to mention that even Katie Holmes couldn’t ruin it for me, and while I don’t mind her in general, that performance was utterly awful.
73. Nelia - February 26th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Oh, and even though my previous post was all about what I would have put on… I really like the list. I’ve seen 7 of those movies, and they are all great face offs. Blade is a favorite of mine, as is Die Hard.
74. anthony p - February 26th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
agent starling vs hannibal

83. Smerkis - February 26th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
not the best. Blade II had a better face off then the first. Face-Off is easily one of the worst movies i’ve ever had to sit through. And Seven? Thats not even a face off.
84. seymour - February 26th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
wow…this list was so off the mark.
85. rconnors - February 26th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I am kinda surprised no one mentioned tyler durden vs. himself in fight club, this movie is one big face of between himself. And there are many physical face-offs not just the mental craziness of the main character

Andrea; I’m 45 and the level of nastiness and stupidity still never ceases to amaze me. I honestly do hope that ACB is not your real name. There are some true sickos out there, (most Listverse viewers I’m sure are NOT on that list). You must remember that your own personal security is dependent only on the fact that no one wishes you ill. Not that it’s been my experience, most people don’t wish you harm, but no sense taking unnecessary risks. I’m sure you don’t want a stalker psycho.
112. jfrater - February 26th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Andrea: are you able to get that other person to stop? It wastes a lot of my time and energy when I have to keep deleting comments

even though it’s been said multiple times, i want my input

116. badlist - February 26th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
sarah you own I’ve seen all the batman movies val kilmer was the worst then george clooney was just barely better than awful, michael keaton semi believable. with christian bale nailing it.

badlist: I can’t wait for it either - the new batman was amazing! I hope the next one is just as good!
120. Angelina - February 26th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
ACB: What parts? The public school system in Savannah, Ga is atrocious. I went to public school but If I had kids I would not send them here. Sad!
121. Angelina - February 26th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Jfrater: I find it refreshing that you are politely conversing with someone who calls themselves “badlist”. Such a gentleman!
122. Andrea Carlena - February 26th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Val Kilmer was awful, and Clooney needed a ltllte imprvement. Bale is BY FAR the best. Hands down. And most attractive.
-Andrea Carlena Beauman
123. Andrea Carlena - February 26th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Face-Off
GIVEN?
131. islanderbst - February 26th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
hows about a literal face off, the melty scene from Raiders of the lost ark?
132. GRUMPYNZ - February 26th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Star Wars should have been #1. Heat should have been #2. I would’ve included Megatron Vs Optimus Prime from the original movie in #3 - i mean how epic was that fight?! Megatron and Prime facing off for the last time.
133. LordCalvert - February 26th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
T-800 vs T-1000 in Terminator 2
Alien vs Predator
i’m not an arnold fan…
134. Joel - February 26th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
How the crap is Blade and Face/Off higher than Star Wars, Heat, and Batman? And I agree that Neo vs. Agent Smith is a valid addition. How about Roy Schneider vs. a very big shark in Jaws?
I get the impression that these are not just one-time scenes–like many of the other suggestions–but entire films devoted to these face-offs between the hero and the villain.
135. anthony p - February 26th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
the melting face in poltergeist is another memorable face off
136. davo - February 26th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
it is a crime that Arnie versus the predator is not in here
137. Csimmons - February 26th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
id put in Freddy V.s. Jason because that has to be the best fight in Horror movie history.
138. BrotherMan - February 26th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
I read someone’s comment about Wesley vs. Prince Humperdink from The Princess Bride.
I think that if we were to mention that movie we should replace that choice with the infamous Inigo Montoya vs. The Six Fingered Man.
139. Prozacsoldier - February 26th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Mel gibson VS Gary Busey in Lethal Weapon
140. Pyrratus - February 26th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

141. Philmont237 - February 26th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
What about “Enemy at the Gates”?
142. MarkJ - February 26th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Travolta in Face/Off? Hell yeah! When i saw the List i said to myself that Face/Off better make it! I agree with GRUMPYNZ about the Prime/Megatron fight.
Hey, just a random question. Anyone else tear up when Optimus Prime died??
143. Daves_Kicking_Game - February 26th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
I just read this list, and thought to myself: “Enemy at the Gates” has to be on this list. It needed to be.

153. Dawn Bearer - February 27th, 2008 at 5:10 am
Saw 2 had one of the greatest face offs in my mind
Jigsaw vs Dt.Eric Mathews, for me, alot better than Blade.
154. longball - February 27th, 2008 at 6:28 am
What about the final fight scene in Equillibrium?
Cleric Preston vs. Dupont/Brandt and henchmen.
Christian Bale did an excellent job portraying an emotionless cleric, whose only job was to stamp out feelings through out his city but then discovers emotion within himself after ceasing to take his medication. When the Proctor and the Partriage turn against him though, he makes for one of the best fight scenes i’v ever seen.
155. longball - February 27th, 2008 at 6:29 am
The matrix cannot be included here. too much CGI.
156. longball - February 27th, 2008 at 6:51 am

159. Kelsi - February 27th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Okay, so there’s no way I’m ever going to get through reading all those comments and make it to work on time, but the Man in Black vs. Inigo Montoya?! Amazing.
160. zubair kaka - February 27th, 2008 at 9:10 am
Michael Keaton had perhaps the best portrayal of Batman
what total crap…did you not watch batman begins?
161. Zoidberg - February 27th, 2008 at 9:15 am
Another vote for “Deckard v Batty - Blade Runner”
Agreed with 160 re/Batman Begins. Much better BATMAN.
162. Zoidberg - February 27th, 2008 at 9:17 am
Wait, how could I forget:
Mac(Ready) vs Windows in John Carpenter’s THE THING, if only for the fact that it’s Mac vs Windows (and that Windows is arguably consumed by the “virus” of The Thing at the end.
All kidding aside, a great film.
163. Csimmons - February 27th, 2008 at 9:19 am
OBAMA V.S. CLINTON! Lol!
164. Csimmons - February 27th, 2008 at 9:20 am

165. d - February 27th, 2008 at 9:39 am

174. swampsnake - February 28th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Dan Ooh 21 26 & 27 first 2 comments very funny but as to Pacino over acting . it only appears that way because he is usually just that much better than those he is acting with. and most of them would say they learned a lot from him.
175. swampsnake - February 28th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
although i thought the comment about stallone was funny best face off for me was rambo vs the entire police dept and anyone else they could find in First Blood. quote the col, “bring a good supply of body bags”

Blade? Seriously? That movie sucked…
Terrible puns aside, I think Kaneda vs. Tetsuo from Akira and Matrix vs. Bennett from Commando (speaking of terrible puns…) should be added to this list, in addition to The Matrix, Terminator, Predator and others already mentioned.
