Top 10 Zombie Movies
Published on January 29, 2008 - 147 Comments
This has been a tough list to put together. I have selected many films that will be known to you all, but I have also included a couple that are lesser known - they are still brilliant films, and hopefully this list will help to expand your zombie viewing horizons! So onwards, the list:
10. 28 Days Later 2002, Danny Boyle - UK
The reason this is so high on the list is because of the fact that its characters are not undead (my preference in a zombie flick) - they are merely infected with a virus. The plot, which most of us already know: Four weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.
9. Braindead 1992, Peter Jackson - New Zealand
This was Peter Jackson’s fourth film (and is sometimes called Dead Alive) - it is a far cry from the quality directing we have seen in Lord of the Rings, but it is brilliant nevertheless. A young man’s mother is bitten by a “rat monkey.” She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors. How can this film NOT be on the list - the bitch eats dogs!
8. Wild Zero 2000, Tetsuro Takeuchi - Japan
Okay - like 28 days later the characters are not undead, but this film has to be included on the list because it is not just about movies - it is about movies and rock’n'roll! What combination could be better?! After a meteor strike aliens attack the earth and begin turning people into zombies. Rockers Guitar Wolf, Bass Wolf and Drum Wolf aswell as their rock and roll blood brother ace and his true love Tobio are caught in the middle of this madness.
7. White Zombie 1932, Victor Halperin - USA
This is the film that created the genre! It relies on atmosphere and expressionistic sets and acting to convey a pretty potent sense of dread. The coolest thing is that it stars Bela Lugosi as Murder Legendre, who can turn people into zombies with the power of his mind!
6. Return of the Living Dead 1985, Dan O’Bannon - USA
When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains (of course!)
5. The Evil Dead 1981, Sam Raimi - USA
Five friends go up to a cabin in the woods where they find unspeakable evil lurking in the forest. They find the Necronomicon and the taped translation of the text. Once the tape is played, the evil is released. One by one, the teens become deadly zombies. With only one remaining, it is up to him to survive the night and battle the evil dead. A brilliant film by the equally brilliant Sam Raimi.
4. Shaun of the Dead 2004, Edgar Wright - UK
Shaun doesn’t have a very good day, so he decides to turn his life around by getting his ex to take him back, but he times it for right in the middle of what may be a zombie apocalypse… But for him, it’s an opportunity to show everyone he knows how useful he is by saving them all. All he has to do is survive… And get his ex back. This is such a great zombie movie that it ranks as the 245th best movie of all time on IMDB!
3. Dellamorte Dellamore 1994, Michele Soavi - Italy
This movie is actually not so much a zombie film (but believe me, there are zombies galore) as an examination of life, death, love, and the boundaries between. The film is based on the life of a graveyard caretaker who has to kill the various zombies that pop up during the night. This truly is one of the best zombie movies around.
2. Night of the Living Dead 1968, George A. Romero - USA
This is the birth of the modern zombie film. It is also one of the scariest horror films ever made. The film set in concrete Romero’s position as the greatest zombie film maker in history. The radiation from a fallen satellite might have caused the recently deceased to rise from the grave and seek the living to use as food. This is the situation that a group of people penned up in an old farmhouse must deal with.
1. Dawn of the Dead 1978, George A. Romero - USA
Ten years after Night of the Living Dead, Romero gave us another astonishingly brilliant zombie film - Dawn of the Dead. It surpasses its predecessor and definitely deserves top place on this list. Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter, and his television-executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.
Bonus: Zombi 2 1979, Lucio Fulci - Italy
This tense and gory postmodern zombie film is included for one reason: the underwater fight between a zombie and a shark! You can watch the trailer here.

1. akKris - January 29th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
No Resident Evil?
2. Randall - January 29th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I realize it’s not the typical “zombies creeping around eating people” films, but “I Walked with a Zombie” is surely a work of freakin’ art, and I’d argue it belongs here.
3. purdnasty - January 29th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
hehe resident evil wasn’t bad but there’s too many better zombie movies
4. jfrater - January 29th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
akKris: I agree with purdnasty - Resident Evil is very popular but I don’t think it is top 10 material - maybe top 15.
Randall: I am not familiar with that one - I just read about it on IMDB and it sounds really fascinating - I will have to check it out.
5. fishing4monkeys - January 29th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
@jfrater:
cool list
But I’m glad to see 28 days later on here! It was a very different take on the whole genre and I liked it!
Sadly i’ve never seen any of the “classic” zombie flicks
And THANK YOU for NOT putting resident evil on here!! Good movies but not top 10 stuff like you said…
6. jfrater - January 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Sorry for the downtime guys - we are currently running at over 18MB/s! Maybe due to fox news - though I can’t find the link.
7. me - January 29th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
YAY i love brain dead and 28 days later
better than the americanized rubbish sequal 28 weeks later
Geeeeeze america do u always have to try and save the day and end up blowing everything up
8. purdnasty - January 29th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
the reason i don’t think the resident evil movies are as good as these (even though i love them, i still remember how psyched i was when i found out it was actually happening) is because they are more about ass kicking and don’t have a sense of realism - weird because we are talking about zombie movies but still, dawn of the dead, feels like you are actually there.
9. me - January 29th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I love brain dead and 28 days later
And i have to say i quite liked the first resi film
10. prop - January 29th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
dare i ask the reasoning behind evil dead being in the list over evil dead 2?
11. sarahenity - January 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
haha awesome to see shaun of the dead on here.
i wasn’t expecting that
12. toolnut - January 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Ok, so its not letting me login. . . anyways
jfrater: the link mentions “the donk” as Amazon’s weirdest product and the article mentions List Universe and the rest of the weirdest products list. Coooool!
Also, maybe its just me but I liked the newer Dawn of the Dead better than the old one. I know the old one is a classic but I guess that newer technology in movie makeup and special effects have desensitized me to older films. Sorry
13. sarahenity - January 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
haha awesome to see shaun of the dead on here.
i wasn’t expecting that
14. Maxx_the_Slash - January 29th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Quote (28 Days Later): “The reason this is so high on the list is because of the fact that its characters are not undead (my preference in a zombie flick)”
Well then, I guess it’s NOT a zombie movie then IS IT? Zombies are supposed to be undead. Zombies are supposed to be re-animated dead people. They’re supposed to eat people, not claw and spit blood at them. Zombies don’t starve themselves to death like idiots.
28 Days Later was ****ing AWFUL. It’s hard to admire a horror movie when the first time we see the main character is in the very beginning when we see him with his schlong hanging out lying down on a medical examination table for no damn reason and get’s up like he’s perfectly okay, thus destroying any reason for him being there in the first place.
15. Sam - January 29th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
YESSSS! Dawn of the Dead is one of my favorite movies of all time =]
16. Cyn - January 29th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

17. someguy - January 29th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
“your mother ate my dog!” hahaha!
the simpsons halloween episode about zombies was great!
18. petey mcgee - January 29th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
no invasion of the body snatchers?
and i can’t login either
19. Sharki - January 29th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Prop: There’s no Evil Dead 2 because it’s not really a zombie movie.
Toolnut: I’m with you on this one. As much as I love the original Dawn of the Dead the remake is better film; leaner, meaner, darker and scarier.
20. goof_ball - January 29th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Man, I love Shaun of the Dead!
21. Nelia - January 29th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Good list. I’ve only seen about half the movies, but the ones I have seen are fantastic. I have to second the question… Why Evil Dead over Evil Dead II? I prefer II personally, but I’ve always been a big Army of Darkness fan as well. Shaun of the Dead is a pleasant surprise. I love that film, and I was sorry to see that while I liked Hot Fuzz, they couldn’t quite replicate the awesomeness of Shaun of the Dead.
22. phunniemee - January 30th, 2008 at 12:53 am
Serious question: Why are people so obsessed with zombies? I don’t get it.
23. torn and frayed - January 30th, 2008 at 1:05 am
This is a topic near and dear to my heart. I have seen all these movies and I think your list is pretty damn good. Personally I’d leave off 28 days as it wasn’t truly a zombie movie, nor was it all that good. I like that there is no Resident Evil (#1 was ok, the rest are kind of lame.) or Dawn of the Dead remake (don’t be duped by the special effects, the movie is lame) My number one would be Day of the Dead. People say it’s boring, but I think it’s the most intellectual movie of the Romero series. (Can’t wait to see his Diary of the Dead). I also liked his remake of Night of the Living Dead too.
Oh and why Evil Dead over #2? Because Evil Dead is pure horror, #2 is the transition between horror and comedy, Army of Darkness is comedy. Don’t get me wrong, I love them all, but much prefer the horror of #1. The low budget look just adds to it too.
24. dangorironhide - January 30th, 2008 at 1:10 am
I’ve only seen two of the films on this list, as I’m not much of a horror film fan. Shaun of the Dead is absolutely brilliant. I can’t see what everyone sees in 28 Days Later myself, I don’t think it’s that good.
As for the remake of Dawn of the Dead (I havent seen the original), aren’t zombies meant to be shambling hunks of flesh, rather than being able to run like in that film??
25. sk - January 30th, 2008 at 1:23 am
Pretty good list!
i definitely have to see white zero!
One of my favourites:
“zombie self defense squad” and
“punk rock splatter massacre”
cheesy and damn funny
26. Seth - January 30th, 2008 at 2:27 am
what about “They Came Back”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Came_Back
And I agree with “torn and frayed”… George A Romero’s “Day of the Dead” is the best. But what can I say. I love zombies. In fact I dressed up as one for Halloween at my old job. check it out:
http://david.seth.googlepages.com/zombie.jpg
27. heavybison - January 30th, 2008 at 2:34 am
#torn and frayed: I agree completely. Though Evil Dead II is slickly made and has good effects(for it’s time), the first one is pure and simple scarier.
28. Mom424 - January 30th, 2008 at 5:39 am
Great List,
Congratulations on the traffic, I think (as I shake with LV withdrwal)
Am I the only one who thought the ending of 28 days was lame-o. Kind of wrecked an otherwise awesome movie,,,(the soldiers in the school freaked me out worse than the zombies)
Hows about Werewolf movies?,,,Dog Soldiers, An American Werewolf in London,,,etc
29. Cathysferret - January 30th, 2008 at 5:57 am
Love the list, although I can’t believe #3 is on here! And at #3 no doubt! It was under another name when I saw it (can’t remember what now) and it was the most wasted 2 hours of my life! I actually would warn people about it! And the end is horrible! Sorry… I usually don’t go off like this but I REALLY don’t like this movie…
30. Cathysferret - January 30th, 2008 at 6:00 am
Cemetary Man… that’s what it was
31. dangorironhide - January 30th, 2008 at 6:02 am
Mom424: There is a werewolf list in the archive
32. Randall - January 30th, 2008 at 6:23 am
Jfrater:
Never seen “I Walked with a Zombie,” huh? See it. I think you’ll love it.
Are you familiar with *any* of Val Lewton’s films? (He was the producer of “I Walked…”) Lewton and his team did this fantastic series of low-budget but classy horror films in the 40s…. most famous is “Cat People.” Seek them out, dude… believe me, they’re great.
33. Bill - January 30th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Wait until George Romero releases “Diary of the Dead” sometime this year. Sort of a Zombie Cloverfield.
34. jfrater - January 30th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Randall: I haven’t - but I definitely will now!
35. Mystern - January 30th, 2008 at 7:15 am
Can’t log in.
But I was glad to see some of my favorites make the list. All in all quite good.
36. SocialButterfly - January 30th, 2008 at 8:26 am
Listverse!!! Oh, how I’ve missed you!
Wow… never realized I was addicted until all I was able to access was the blog.
Anyway.. back to the zombies. Never realized I was a fan of zombie movies but I just counted and I have seen 6 of the movies on this list. Go figure…
37. Mystern - January 30th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Horray for Listverse! We need a top Vampire movie list.
38. jfrater - January 30th, 2008 at 8:30 am
If you can’t log in - try a refresh (F5) - it fixes it for me - the problem is a new caching system installed to try to keep us up while we weather this storm! It will eventually come right
39. Rew - January 30th, 2008 at 8:38 am
ok ok, where is Army of Darkness. That is the best zombie/action/pure comedy EVER
40. Jackie - January 30th, 2008 at 8:46 am
I love LOVE zombie movies George Romero’s movies are great.
I love 28 days and 28 weeks later. Shaun of the Dead was also brilliant.
41. cryndigo - January 30th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Some of those are really good.
42. DiscHuker - January 30th, 2008 at 8:54 am
28 days later freaked me out for 2 main reasons
- i went to the movie having no idea what it was about. needless to say, i wasn’t expecting zombies.
- i hadn’t seen alot of zombie movies but what i did know was that they were slow and not terribly smart. these jokers that sprinted everywhere really messed with my sense of security should an outbreak occur.
sprinting zombies shudder
btw, shaun should be #1. brilliant movie.
43. Anonymous - January 30th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Evil Dead scares me even NOW, I watched it with my best friend months ago and we were grabbing each other’s arms lol. Even for a low-budget movie, the costumes and makeup were creepy.
44. Mom424 - January 30th, 2008 at 9:11 am
rew; Bruce Campbell rocks, and I loved army of darkness, but its not really a zombie movie; more like skeletons, high camp, and satire/parody. Brilliant.
45. Mom424 - January 30th, 2008 at 9:13 am
Seth; awesome, I do the zombie thing every year at Halloween too, I love to scare the kids…(my cruel streak), the contacts are wonderfully zombiefied. are they too uncomfortable?
46. Rew - January 30th, 2008 at 9:15 am
i think bruce campbell should be iron man instead of robert downey jr.
47. Jeannie - January 30th, 2008 at 9:18 am
What about “FIDO”?? That was an awesome movie. A little lighter than these on the list - but a great movie.
48. 8rustystaples - January 30th, 2008 at 9:34 am
“Shock Waves” and Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” belong on this list WAY ahead of “28 Days Later.” While 28DL wasn’t a bad movie, it paid way too many homages (read “ripped off”) to other superior films to be included on its own merits.
Also, if you include “Wild Zero” on the list, it should be replaced with “Versus” purely on its adrenaline factor.
The much weaker “Dawn of the Dead” remake is nothing but a soulless, witless version of the Romero classic. It’s entertaining but vastly inferior to the subversive commentary of the consumer culture that Romero weaved into his film.
Loved seeing “Shaun of the Dead” on the list, as well as “Return of the Living Dead”.
On a side note, Anna Falchi of “Dellamorte Dellamore” is probably the most beautiful woman ever put on celluloid.
49. romerozombie - January 30th, 2008 at 9:43 am
The original Dawn Of The Dead pretty much defined zombie horror, even more so than Night. Although I think the 2004 remake of Dawn should be in this list, and high. The consumerist theme of the original is pretty mcuh non-existent, but it’s a real fun film, with a great twist thrown in - zombies that can run as fast as yourself.
Evil Dead, great, but ED2 is better, the ‘28…’ are criminally over-rated, and Shaun Of The Dead? Pur-lease!
50. romerozombie - January 30th, 2008 at 9:47 am
The Resident Evil films are garbage!
51. copperdragon - January 30th, 2008 at 9:56 am
wasn’t there a movie called “I was a teenage zombie”???
52. Harsha - January 30th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Hey anyone here read this amazingly cool book called “All you Zombies”. I forgot who the author is and it has nothing to do with zombies. I can’t seem to find it anywhere not even on amazon.A link to the pdf or paperback would be appreciated. Thanks!
53. Mr. E - January 30th, 2008 at 10:39 am
I think “I Am Legend” deserves mention here.
54. CK - January 30th, 2008 at 10:41 am
I actually enjoyed the Resident Evil franchise. A far cry from epic but at least entertaining. Girls kicking butt is a definite plus instead of whimpy maidens in distress. Anyhow, I thought 28 Days Later was good but it wasn’t nearly as scary as everyone told me it was going to be. Shaun of the Dead was hilarious!
55. SocialButterfly - January 30th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Mr. E: Is your last name Nygma?? Just curious.
56. Mom424 - January 30th, 2008 at 11:14 am
romerozombie; C’mon a little harsh. Army of Darkness is classic high camp. How can you not appreciate it? Family favourite at my house, my son’s favourite movie when he was six. I still laugh when I watch it. Bruce Campbell is god.
57. delioglan - January 30th, 2008 at 11:17 am
I am not sure if “I am Legend” is a zombie film as a whole, its more like “extinction of humankind film”; but if you think it as a zombie film, it definetely deserves a place in this list… A solid story, effective zombie design and frightening chase scenes.. What more you can ask for
58. Brian - January 30th, 2008 at 11:18 am
blow me 28 days and weeks later both sucked.. they were contaminated with rage… pissed off people throwing up blood on you… not a zombie movie douche
59. Brian - January 30th, 2008 at 11:19 am
also sociallyretarded your not clever you only know of that word because of Batman and Robin
60. Mystern - January 30th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Brian: I’m confused by your comment to Socialbutterfly. Is it meant to be an insult or not? The “;)” is throwing me off.
61. Marcy - January 30th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Yay Zombies! There are several on this list I haven’t seen, but you better believe they’re gonna be added to my Netflix queue!
I enjoyed 28 Days Later. Why did so many of you dislike it? Someone mentioned that it stole from other movies, but that happens all the time. As long as it’s done well I don’t have a problem with it. All films steal something from someone.
Sidenote: My husband and I dressed up as Ash and Sheila from Army of Darkness for Halloween last year. Boomstick and all. It was awesome. We went to Hollywood and people wanted to take pictures with us!
62. Mom424 - January 30th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Mystern; a person from ebaums got in here by mistake again…and
Socialbutterfly; I thought your remark clever and
Brian; douche?,,,you can’t do any better ‘n’ that?
63. islanderbst - January 30th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
wheres the serpent and the rainbow and
grindhouse planet terror?
64. islanderbst - January 30th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
and the real #1 zombie movie…
THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD
seriously.
65. 8rustystaples - January 30th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Don’t even think of putting “I Am Legend” on this list. Not only is it not a zombie movie, if was a terrible adaptation and a slap in the face to the source material.
Not that the movie was necessarily bad. In fact, the first half was quite good. Smith’s portrayal of an alone-too-long man was superb. But halfway through, it deviates from the Matheson novel and just goes action-y. It’s like the writer developed mercury poisoning in the middle of writing the script.
Subpar CGI, especially for a big-budget movie, didn’t help.
And don’t get me started on the ending.
If anyone out there still reads (and this is Listverse, so I’ll bet many of you do), do yourself a favor and pick up the book.
66. SubliminalDeath666 - January 30th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
#10 sucked, zombies are not supposed to run!! That was more like I Am Legend, where the zombies are actually seriously pissed for no reason.
67. Logick Bomb - January 30th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
where’s nudist colony of the dead?
68. Hannah - January 30th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Sean of the Dead was the best movie ever. I watched it by myself and was actually scared on some parts. But it was completely hilarious. I just didn’t like 28 days though. Nor did I see a reason for a second one! And I thoughT I am Legend was an awesome movie, but I agree that usually the books that come before movies are way better!
69. Scoob - January 30th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Good to see the original Dawn of the Dead as #1, it deserves to be there. The re-make was average at best. I think RE:1 or 2 should’ve had a mention, they were ok (the 3rd one was pretty bad).
I do not think 28 days later should be there though, that movie was plain awful and one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen and I’m a HUGE zombie movie fan. I can’t wait to see Diary of the Dead, Romero is the king and he has more control over this one, should be good.
70. Mariam67 - January 30th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I loved the new Dawn of the Dead, with Sarah Polley. Zombies scare me more than anything though, so I don’t watch those movies too often. I once saw a clip from Night of the Living Dead 3, I think it was, with the tar man? Gave me nightmares. :/
71. RobS - January 30th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
White Zombie, oh yes.
But, you have to figure, when his parents named him “Murder Legendre”, it was a fairly safe bet he wouldn’t be growing up to be an accountant.
Sad, really.
Poor little kid…
And how could you forget The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies????
I mean, we’re talking excruciatingly painful movie, here!
72. lightningclash - January 30th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
My goal in life is to create the world’s greatest zombie movie. I give my props for such an amazing list! Keep up the good work!
73. Csimmons - January 30th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
HOLY CRAP! on #6! I live in Lousville, Kentucky!
74. islanderbst - January 30th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
sorry lightning, its already been made
see comment 64!
75. jesse - January 30th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
hahaha awesome!!!!!! thanks so much great list!
76. prop - January 30th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Sharki: if the evil dead one ‘zombies’ make the list, then surely the evil dead two ones do. i mean, there’s an evil zombie hand - that’s worthy of it’s own entry on the list. but do agree with torn’s comment that it’s making the transition to the comedy side of things. nevertheless it’s a great series
and good to see braindead on the list. always fun walking round wellington playing spot the zombie locations
77. jesse - January 30th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
resident evil by the way sucks as a movie, or even a zombie movie, terrible series , so jfrater good thing u didn’t add it to this GREAT list. love the bonus
78. azombie - January 30th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
You can tell that this list was NOT created by a true zombie film expert. Evil Dead is not a zombie film, it is about demonic possession. Also, it excludes some of the more underground greats. I think someone ought to go do their homework and try again
79. indiefreak19 - January 30th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Wierdllyy coincidentally, today in my new unit on writing Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy, we looked at zombie movies!!
We watched about half of ‘Return of the Living Dead’ and it was an awesome lesson!
80. Dave - January 30th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
How is “Fido” not on this list?
81. me - January 30th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
to max the slash (#14)
i believe the guy was infact in hospital do to the fact he was knocked off his bike and as for waking up after the “zombies” are (lets say settled in) is a great twist on the zombie movie
and makes the film more entertaining to see how someon wuld react in that situation
82. islanderbst - January 30th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
dave- i’d been wondering about FIDO, havent seen it but sounds good
is it good? is it like a kids film though?
83. BrotherMan - January 30th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Return of the Living Dead! Dead right! Glad to see it on the list. And it was based in my hometown too!
84. me - January 30th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
BrotherMan
WOW do u see many zombies round tht area now then

I have nothing to contribute to this. I don’t like Zombie movies because they are really stupid and boring and then they scare the shit out of me and then I can’t sleep and who wants to watch a movie that just keeps them awake,
86. el duderino - January 30th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Shaun of The Dead was a brilliant. I thought Cocoon wasn’t all that scary for a zombie film.
87. ChuChu353 - January 30th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
No “Plan 9 From Outer Space”? LOL
88. JwJwBean - January 30th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I agree with whoever said The Serpent and the Rainbow. That movie scared the crap out of me. “You mean there really are zombies and someone can make you that way and you can be buried alive? No fucking way!”
I also have not seen too many comments on Black Sheep. I haven’t seen it yet, but my husband loves Zombie films and wants to see it. It is is worth it?
89. Drogo - January 31st, 2008 at 4:43 am
One of the “Living Dead” movies was made by somebody other than George Romero, with his permission. It was the one with the Tar Man. I came across the actors IMDB page when I was looking for something else. I don’t remember his name. He’s had the nickname “Tar Man” ever since the movie came out. He’s tall and skinny and had to cram himself into a barrel full of goo.
90. MENTHOL - January 31st, 2008 at 7:38 am
28 Days Later?! That movie was terrible! The only good scene was the zombie puking blood in the guys mouth near the end. Other than that its just the dude walking around all artsy fartsy. SOOO boring.
91. Dan - January 31st, 2008 at 11:06 am
I’ve always been more appealed by the modern zombie films, like resident evil. the new dawn of the dead is the best zombie film i’ve ever seen. I’ll get to watching all the old ones soon though, because they’re so highly rated.
92. Todd - January 31st, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Gotta say, nice try, but I agree with very few of these. No “Let Sleeping Corpses Lie,” for example. I would actually put “Day of the Dead” on here too, despite being considered by a lot of people to be an inferior work. I actually still think it’s really good.
I suppose my main point on this is the dearth of Italian Zombie films from the 70s and 80s. That’s the real stuff.
93. riledupone - January 31st, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Another vote for “Fido”. It’s the story of a boy and his zombie. It is NOT a kid’s movie. And Billy Connolly, who plays Fido, is brillant even though he has no dialogue.
94. Drogo - February 1st, 2008 at 4:18 am
I have a vague memory of a movie called “Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things” that was on late night TV. About people who are making a zombie movie and decide to use real bodies from a cemetery. They accidentally cause the bodies to become real zombies.

nerves driving for brains bumper sticker.
..ok wait, If Night of the living dead is “the birth of the modern zombie film”, what’s the origin? The ancients spoke of wandering sleepers that had an insatiable hunger for lights in their eyes.
the tip tail of desire was what they were, and they were magnetically charged and being pulled to a center.
99. Diogenes - February 1st, 2008 at 6:31 pm
consumer zombies cant break the window doors of a mall to get in.
cant break a car window in a graveyard. need brick or rock.
ok again…perhaps Dead Alive/Braindead should be also on the most scary women list. Its a mother tale as is a number of those.
Out of the son’s duty to mother, an unfortunate series of consequences(?) unfolds and zombies take over the world, or maybe just at the end of the sidewalk.
100. Diogenes - February 1st, 2008 at 6:42 pm
so if there was a great number of people fighting off the zombies and they diminished the population by a sliver. enough for groups of zombies to branch off from the herd and head into the ocean and not the forests because the forests would be gone, but rest stops or empty lots maybe or crappy hotel banquet rooms.. I dunno, whats going on here?
If there was a war between zombies and the dying living, and branches of zombies had to branch off from the war to “survive” as zombies.
what next?

Ha Ha I love Shaun of the Dead, Their 2nd movie hot fuzz was pretty funny too… I remember night of the living from when I was a kid. I remember the brains being throw from the back of the truck. I still need to see the orig. Dawn of the Dead, and I know Resident Evil didn’t make it, but I LOVE those movies, as a matter of fact we just filled out the trilogy…

you get a Zombie movie
yup
turn the backwards volume up and you hear,”brains!brains!,ect”
even though I have never seen “Weekend at Bernies”
mere speculation of the hidden horrors within is enough for me.

Aight well i’ve been a zombie fan since like 5th grade, so i want to put some opinions.
28 days later: the first zombie movie to ever scare me, good charcters and scary scenarios.
Braindead: blood and guts galore, but not deservingly on this list. the zombies are only about 1/4th of the story.
Shaun of the dead: one of my favorite movies, hilarious and kind of freaky.
Night of the living: a good movie for the time it came out, but not scary anymore
Dawn of the dead: the original end of the world zombie movie. so much better when watched a couple times, and more original than any zombie movie made. the remake in 2004 is good, and scarier cause the zombies can run, but cant live up to the original

I got a zombie stuck in my eye when I was 9. My mum tried and tried to get the zombie out; using all her force and a pair of tweezers, to no avail. We went to the hospital emergency room and waited till my number was called. I could hear a guy crying behind the curtain . he had gotten shot and the doctors were telling him to shut up.
I held an ice pack pack to the zombie, that had swollen and I couldnt see.
They called my # and I went in and layed down.
“My my, will yah get a load of that Zombie nurse!”
the doc kidded.
he continued,
“we cant do anything for ya kid. The Zombie has gotten too big and it looks like it’ll cover your whole head within an hour or so.”
117. jocsboss - February 13th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Here is a link to a news story that might interest zombie fans. The headline is “George A. Romero’s zombies have brains”. It’s about “Romero is planning a world tour this year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Night of the Living Dead, the first chapter of his influential franchise of shuffling undead people eaters.” Apparently they have restored Night of the Living Dead.

how do you rate shawn of the dead higher then Evil dead? that series was one of the best created…
And rating brain dead (Dead Alive) that low on the list should be punishable by death…you really know nothing about horror movies do you???

It happens all the time. I was telling Duke the other day that the whole reason I wasn’t blogging anymore was because of the Zombies.
“The What.”, he asked in a rather abrupt pop of a sound in his throat.
“you know…zombies, you know?”
“oooohhh, right! the zombies. of coarse.” Duke said
I said,” You know, Zombies have two tounges.”
“They Wha?”
I said, “yeh, two tounges…but thats not important. Blogging, thats what I was talking about. Those Zombies have side-tracked me off coarse”
“The what now?” Duked asked
” The Zombies Aaaarrhh, Off Coarse! Rough mossy dew!….Nevermind Duke!”
Duke: ok.

I saw Dellamorte Dellamore when I was just a kid, couldn’t have been older than 11, over 10 years ago now and I thought it was amazing. Until now, I couldn’t remember the title (and didn’t realise that Rupert Everett was the star!) Thanks so much for including it here, now I can look for it to buy.
140. Oz - April 3rd, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Just reading back over the other comments, I think I am the only person alive (or at least the only person I know) who thought Shaun Of The Dead was utter garbage. Dellamorte Dellamore is the only zombie flick here that actually has any brains (pardon the pun.) I’ve just discovered it’s alternative title is Cemetery Man. Doesn’t sound quite so eerie but it’s easier to remember anyway!
141. Lizim - April 3rd, 2008 at 8:33 pm
28 Days Later was a horrible experience for me. I don’t really like horror movies. It’s not that I don’t appreciate them, I just get really freaked out. I think that’s why my husband makes me see them. He knows I’ll do the stereotypical squealing and jumping into his arms thing. I was 8 months pregnant when I went to see it. Oh it was SO scary. I had nightmares for days.
142. Andy - April 19th, 2008 at 1:01 am
Yeah seen a couple, most you people are right resident evil shouldn’t be on the list… Fisrt one alright, second crap all…28 days later aint that scary Lizim setle down.
143. Oz - April 19th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Resident Evil IS a zombie movie so I see no reason why it shouldn’t be on the list, whereas 28 Days Later technically isn’t. I guess the people are zombie-like but they’re not zombies, they didn’t rise from the dead, they were living people infected with a virus that made them revert to their most basic instincts.
144. Redder313 - May 1st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Huge fan of both Shaun of the Dead and Evil Dead.Good choices!
P.S. The first time I ever saw Dead Alive (Braindead), I was about 8.I had a fairly strong stomach, thanks to my fathers love of slasher flicks, but this one left me having nightmares for weeks.
145. e - May 11th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Dellamorte Dellamore-i saw a long while ago but it was called the cemetary man thought it was slightly lame same with shawn of the dead i wouldnt rate them badly but wouldnt include them on my list the latter could have been funnier
146. T$ - June 8th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Shaun of the Dead is a modern day comedy/Zombie classic! This is no exaggeration, anyone who has not seen it should, and if you don’t like it get some help.
