Top 10 Tips For Making An Emergency Landing

Published on May 8, 2008 - 108 Comments

It seems like a good time to add to our survival lists with this next exciting installment, aimed at teaching you how to land a light plane in the case of emergency. I am sure we have all fantasized about being able to stand up when an air hostess dramatically cries “Is there anyone on board who can land this plane?!” and say “Yes! Yes, I can land this plane. Show me to the cockpit!”. Well - perhaps that is not true, frankly I hope I am never in a situation like that - but it certainly appears in films often enough that someone somewhere must be hoping for it.

So, for those of you with this weird desire, or those of us who travel frequently, here is a list of the ten steps to take when a pilot is down and you are in charge. NOTE: Listverse will not be responsible for any damages you may cause in a poorly executed landing.

1
Don’t Panic

Dontpanic

This is the most important step - you absolutely must not panic. When you first arrive in the cockpit you can be sure of at least one of two things: either the pilot will have set the plane to fly on auto, or he will have “trimmed” it to fly “hands off”. In both cases the plane will maintain a steady speed, course, and height. In addition, the pilot will have filed a flight plane, so Air-Traffic Control (ATC) will be aware of your flight.

Top 15 Outdoor Essentials

Published on May 7, 2008 - 83 Comments

Here is a short list of items that you should take with you whenever you go on a hike or a camping trip. For general disaster planning, it is probably also a good idea to have the survival collection (from twelve to one) in a small box in the trunk (boot) of your car.

This website is viewed all over the globe, and no one list is appropriate for all times and places. There is probably no need to carry water when traveling down a fresh water river. Special situations usually require a special kit. Adjust this as necessary. Also, this is only a guideline – Be responsible for your own safety.

It was tough to make the list short enough for ListVerse, and yes I probably did omit some important things, but hey, in a survival situation do we really need toilet paper?

Good Quality Tent

Selecting from an ultra lights solos at a bit over 2 Lbs to family affairs that need a car to transport can be daunting. A tent should be chosen based on what and where you expect to use it. This is often the most expensive item in the kit, and depending on your sleeping bag, also the heaviest. It is most important to right-size and right season your tent. You should insist on putting it together in the store before you purchase it. If they don’t let you – take your money elsewhere. And after you bring it home, put it up in rain / dark / etc. - just so you know how.

Top 10 Great Revenge Movies

Published on May 6, 2008 - 388 Comments

Revenge is one of our most primal instincts. The need to inflict suffering and punishment on those who have wronged us goes back to our days in the dark old caves. Because movies about turning the other cheek are a lot less interesting than movies about stabbing someone through the cheek, there have been a pile of great revenge films over the years.

This is our list of the best of the genre - hand picked for your viewing pleasure! Notably absent are films which have a revenge aspect, but not as the primary focus - such as Shawshank Redemption.

[Competition] If we get over 150 comments on this list, I will randomly select one registered user who has commented to select any one of the DVDs on this list as a prize. This includes non-US residents. Random or pointless comments added just to take us over the 150 threshold will not be included. The prize will be drawn tomorrow (7 May, 2008) at 1pm GMT. Good luck! ADDITIONALLY, if we get 200 comments, I will give away a second DVD, and if we get 300, I will give away a third DVD. Get commenting!

Straw Dogs

Upon moving to Britain to get away from American violence, astrophysicist David Sumner and his wife Amy are bullied and taken advantage of by the locals hired to do construction. When David finally takes a stand it escalates quickly into a bloody battle as the locals assault his house. This is Dustin Hoffman as you have never seen him. This is one of my favorite revenge movies - it is definitely worth the purchase/download.

Top 10 Myths About the Romans

Published on May 5, 2008 - 93 Comments

For many, the only exposure to Ancient Rome comes from what they have seen in the movies or on television. Unfortunately, films like Gladiator, Spartacus, Barabbas, and Demetrius and the Gladiators don’t present a very accurate depiction of life in Rome and the arena.

Considering the fact that the Roman Empire existed for so long, and so much of our own Western society has derived from it, it is no surprise that we all have at least one or two misconceptions about the Empire and its people.

For this reason, we have put together a list of the most misconceptions people hold about the Ancient Roman society and customs. Fortunately most are easily proven wrong as you will see when you read on:

Thumbs Up

Image002-4

Contrary to popular belief, the emperor did not give a thumbs up or down for a gladiator as a signal to kill his enemy. The emperor (and only the emperor) would give an open or closed hand - if his palm was flat, it meant “spare his life”, if it was closed, it meant “kill him”. If a gladiator killed his opponent before the emperor gave his permission, the gladiator would be put on trial for murder, as only the emperor had the right to condemn a man to death. In the image above we see this myth in action.
