Humans have come a long way since keeping cave bears at bay with a spear. Most people today do not fear getting jumped by wildlife, even though nonhuman animals contribute to nearly a million human deaths every year, mostly through disease transmission and snakebite. The deadliest are not necessarily the animals getting the most attention. Dogs, freshwater snails, and mosquitoes cause far more human deaths than sharks, bears, and big cats.
Although snakes alone cause about 100,000 deaths annually, we might still prefer our chances in a modern environment to facing the large meat-eating beasts of prehistory. From crocodile-like reptiles so tough they outlasted the dinosaurs to enormous marine predators and mammals armed with multiple pairs of flesh-slicing teeth, here are ten ferocious monsters best admired from afar—and across time.

10 A Sea Crawler with 50 Legs
Many people shudder when they see a cockroach. But today’s roach might look like the preferable choice next to an ancient arthropod that once scurried across the ocean floor. Tegopelte had a broad, shield-like body measuring about 1 foot (30 cm) long and an impressive 25 pairs of legs.
In 2011, the discovery of fossil tracks shed new light on the creepy critter. Around 500 million years ago, something with 50 legs left prints along the seafloor that would later become Canada. These almost certainly belonged to Tegopelte, one of the rarest animals known from the Burgess Shale. It was more than twice the size of every other known bottom-dwelling arthropod from the same locality.
The trackways were several feet long and captured an animal capable of making rapid turns and sometimes using only a fraction of its legs at a time. Combined with evidence from its anatomy, the tracks support the idea that Tegopelte was a fast-moving carnivore. Call it a sea-roach if you will, but this was probably one bug you wouldn’t want scuttling toward you.[1]
9 The World’s Largest Scorpion
In 1871, fossils from Britain were described as belonging to a giant crustacean. The pieces were incomplete and difficult to interpret, and their true identity remained controversial for more than 150 years. Then, in 2026, researchers used modern imaging and newly associated fossils to finally settle the issue: the mystery monster really was an enormous scorpion called Praearcturus gigas.
At an estimated 3.3 feet (1 m) long, P. gigas is the largest known scorpion. Some of its features resemble those of its modern relatives, including enormous pincers. Researchers also identified a stridulatory surface—a body structure capable of producing sound when rubbed against another part—although nobody can know exactly how the scorpion used it. Stranger still, large flaps along its segmented body differ from anything seen in living scorpions.
Its environment offers another surprise. The fossils came from sediments deposited by rivers, leading researchers to suggest that P. gigas may have been aquatic or amphibious. Its great size and huge pincers also support its interpretation as a major predator. The same study determined that fossils previously named Brontoscorpio anglicus and Bennettarthra annwnensis actually belonged to this species, finally combining three prehistoric mysteries into one very large scorpion.[2]
8 Oligocene Toothed Whales Were Orca-Like Terrors
Nearly 30 million years ago, the ocean had its own version of an orca. Ankylorhiza tiedemani was an early toothed whale that lived in waters covering what would later become South Carolina.
When researchers studied a nearly complete skeleton in 2020, one fact was immediately clear: this was no cute dolphin of popular media. Ankylorhiza reached about 15.7 feet (4.8 m) long and possessed a strong snout, powerful jaw muscles, and large teeth designed for grabbing substantial prey. Its body also suggests it could swim relatively quickly. Researchers concluded that it occupied an ecological niche remarkably similar to that of modern killer whales.
The skeleton proved equally valuable for understanding whale evolution. Dolphins belong to the toothed-whale lineage, so scientists were not comparing “dolphins and whales” as separate groups. Instead, Ankylorhiza showed that several swimming adaptations found in modern toothed whales and baleen whales evolved independently after those lineages split. The two groups wound up with remarkably similar solutions for life in the open ocean—a case of evolution apparently arriving at the same design twice.[3]
7 A Mysterious Giant Carnivore
In 1923, the American Museum of Natural History sent Kan Chuen-pao on a paleontology expedition to Mongolia, and he didn’t disappoint. Chuen-pao discovered the only known skull of Andrewsarchus mongoliensis. This bizarre carnivorous mammal lived roughly 37 to 47 million years ago. The head alone measures more than 2.7 feet (0.8 m) long and contains an impressive collection of piercing and crushing teeth.
More than a century later, we still aren’t entirely sure what the beast looked like because the rest of its skeleton has never been found. Early reconstructions depicted a gigantic, wolf-like predator more than 12 feet (3.7 m) long and 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, but those estimates were based on comparing its enormous skull with animals scientists once thought were close relatives. As its position on the mammal family tree changed, so did ideas about its body.
Scientists have variously connected Andrewsarchus with mesonychids—the famous “wolves with hooves”—and entelodonts, or “hell pigs.” More recent research favors a relationship with entelodonts and other even-toed ungulates. That means this intimidating meat-eater probably ran on hooves. However, whether it actively hunted large prey, scavenged carcasses, or ate a more varied diet remains uncertain.
For decades, artists essentially had to build an entire monster around one giant head. More than 100 years after its discovery, Andrewsarchus remains one of prehistory’s most tantalizing carnivorous mysteries.[4]
6 The T. Rex of Mosasaurs
Near the end of the dinosaurs’ reign, mosasaurs dominated the Cretaceous oceans. These enormous marine lizards had powerful jaws, flippers, streamlined bodies, and tails adapted for swimming. All were carnivorous, but one newly recognized species stands out even among these fearsome sea monsters.
In 1979, an 80-million-year-old fossil was discovered near Dallas, Texas. For decades, it was assigned to another known mosasaur species. Then researchers revisited fossils from museum collections across the country and realized that more than a dozen specimens represented something different. In 2026, the animal finally received its own name: Tylosaurus rex, or “king of the tylosaurs.”
Growing up to about 43 feet (13.1 m) long, T. rex ranks among the largest known mosasaurs. Its finely serrated teeth and skull anatomy indicate powerful jaw and neck muscles, making it a formidable apex predator. Fossils also suggest that its aggression wasn’t reserved for prey. One specimen nicknamed the “Black Knight” has a fractured lower jaw and is missing the tip of its snout—injuries researchers believe were inflicted by another member of its own species.
The best part may be that this monster wasn’t freshly dug from the ground. Its fossils had been sitting in museum collections for decades, hiding in plain sight under the wrong name. Sometimes discovering a new prehistoric killer requires an expedition. Sometimes it just requires taking another look at the shelves.[5]
5 The Cretaceous Sea Held Krakens
The Kraken is typically relegated to sailors’ tales and fantasy films. But during the Late Cretaceous, the oceans did indeed harbor octopuses approaching sea-monster proportions. In 2026, researchers revealed that some of the earliest known finned octopuses were enormous predators capable of rivaling the marine reptiles swimming alongside them.
The animals were identified from exceptionally preserved fossil jaws dating from roughly 100 to 72 million years ago. Because octopuses have soft bodies that rarely fossilize, virtually everything else disappeared. Yet those surviving beaks were enough for researchers to estimate total body lengths of roughly 22 to 62 feet (7 to 19 m).
Among them, Nanaimoteuthis haggarti may have reached the upper end of that range, potentially making these animals some of the largest invertebrates ever described. Heavy wear on their jaws suggests they crushed hard skeletons, while the researchers proposed that they may have preyed on large marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs and mosasaurs. Even stranger, asymmetrical wear patterns could reflect lateralized behavior and surprisingly complex intelligence.
Imagine a 60-foot octopus equipped with a crushing beak and enough brainpower to use it effectively. Suddenly, the Kraken seems considerably less mythical.[6]
4 The Reptiles That Survived Extinction Twice
Sebecids were land-dwelling relatives of crocodiles that looked as though someone had decided ordinary crocodilians weren’t terrifying enough. Unlike their low-slung, semiaquatic modern cousins, these predators had longer legs, a more upright stance, deep skulls, and serrated teeth designed for slicing flesh. The largest members of the group reached roughly 20 feet (6 m) long.
Scientists thought sebecids disappeared from South America around 10.5 to 12.5 million years ago. Then fossils found in the Dominican Republic changed the story. A tooth and vertebrae dating to roughly 5 to 7 million years ago revealed that these predators survived in the Caribbean several million years after vanishing from the mainland fossil record.
The Dominican animal itself was much smaller—perhaps around 7 feet (2 m) long—but its existence suggests the Caribbean acted as a “lost world” refuge for an otherwise vanished lineage. Older sebecid fossils from Cuba and Puerto Rico indicate the predators may once have been widespread across the islands.
Exactly how terrestrial crocodile relatives reached the Caribbean remains uncertain. Temporary land connections or chains of closely spaced islands may have helped them disperse north from South America. Either way, sebecids effectively survived extinction twice: first by outlasting the dinosaurs and then by hanging on in an island refuge long after scientists thought their entire lineage had disappeared.[7]
3 The Beast That Preceded the Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs weren’t the first land animals to produce terrifying apex predators. Roughly 265 million years ago, during the Middle Permian, South America was home to Pampaphoneus biccai, a carnivorous therapsid belonging to the group Dinocephalia.
Dinocephalians lived tens of millions of years before the earliest dinosaurs and belonged to the synapsid branch of the evolutionary tree—the same broad lineage that eventually produced mammals. Pampaphoneus was an anteosaurid, a family containing some of the largest terrestrial predators of the Middle Permian. Its skull carried enormous canine teeth backed by serrated postcanines built for tearing flesh.
A nearly complete skull described in 2023 gave scientists a much clearer view of the animal. Researchers believe that specimen and the original holotype probably belonged to subadults, while a larger fragmentary fossil may represent a fully grown individual. Estimates suggest that mature animals could have reached roughly 10 feet (3 m) in length.
Perhaps most notably, Pampaphoneus remains the only known South American anteosaurid. Long before Tyrannosaurus rex ever appeared, this mammal-line predator was already showing that evolution had mastered the giant terrestrial killing machine.[8]
2 A Misjudged Predator Was Actually Terrifying
For years, Anteosaurus magnificus had something of an image problem. The enormous Middle Permian therapsid possessed a gigantic skull, bone-crushing teeth, powerful jaws, and a heavily built skeleton. Because it looked so bulky, paleontologists often pictured it as a sluggish predator that relied on ambushes or scavenging. Some even suggested it might have spent much of its life in water.
Then scientists looked inside its head.
Researchers used X-ray micro-CT scans to digitally reconstruct the brain cavity and inner ear of Anteosaurus. They discovered that its balance organs were relatively enlarged compared with those of close relatives and other predators living at the same time. The region associated with coordinating head and eye movements was also well developed.
Those features painted a dramatically different picture. Rather than a lumbering brute, Anteosaurus was anatomically equipped to be an agile terrestrial predator capable of tracking prey and striking quickly. The animal lived roughly 260 million years ago, long before dinosaurs evolved. Yet, its nervous system already contained adaptations associated with active pursuit hunting.
It’s essentially a paleontological makeover in reverse. Scientists took a creature they thought was slow and cumbersome, scanned its skull, and discovered that the supposedly clumsy monster had been built for the chase all along.[9]
1 A Giant Predator with Three Sets of Meat-Slicing Blades
Modern lions, wolves, and other carnivorans possess a specialized pair of carnassial teeth that act like scissors when the jaws close. An extinct group of predatory mammals, the hyaenodonts, took that design much further. Some developed as many as three successive pairs of specialized shearing teeth.
Then there was Simbakubwa kutokaafrika.
The fossils belonged to a gigantic hyaenodont that prowled Kenya roughly 22 million years ago. Researchers estimated that the animal may have weighed up to 3,300 pounds (1,500 kg), potentially making it considerably heavier than the largest living bears. Its jaws contained enormous piercing canines and blade-like molars designed to slice through flesh.
Despite that hardware, the species went unnoticed for decades. Its fossils had been excavated at Kenya’s Meswa Bridge site in the late 1970s during a search for ancient primates. Because those researchers were focused on fossil apes, the huge carnivore bones were placed in the collections of the National Museums of Kenya. Years later, paleontologists studying hyaenodonts opened the drawers and realized the giant jaw and teeth belonged to an animal unknown to science.
Simbakubwa was a hypercarnivore, meaning more than 70 percent of its diet likely consisted of vertebrate flesh—not that it necessarily ate meat exclusively. Its name means “big lion” in Swahili. However, it isn’t closely related to cats, bears, wolves, or any other living African predators.
An enormous carnivorous mammal armed with multiple pairs of meat-slicing teeth is intimidating enough. Knowing that its fossils spent decades quietly sitting in a museum drawer makes the discovery even better.[10]
