This is a list of angels and demons probably not featured in the recently released movie of the same name. The entities listed below, have at various times been subject to exoteric and esoteric teachings throughout our history in many allegedly divinely inspired traditions as physical beings or as a psychological projection into the outer world of our own good and evil emotions and thoughts.
In Christianity, one of the 7 archangels, Uriel plays a role in the rescue of Jesus’ cousin John the Baptist from the massacre of the innocents. He carries John and his mother Saint Elizabeth to join the Holy Family after their Flight into Egypt. Their reunion is depicted in Leonardo da Vinci’s Virgin of the Rocks. From medieval Jewish mystical traditions, Uriel is also the Angel of Sunday and the Angel of Poetry.
The archangel of death in Islam also equated with the angel of death in Judeo-Christian traditions and sometimes more commonly known as the grim reaper. He has 4 faces to watch over the 4 cardinal points of the earth, he has 4000 wings, and his whole body consists of eyes and tongues, the number of which corresponds to the number of people inhabiting the earth, he will be the last to die, recording and erasing constantly in a large book the names of men at birth and death.
In Christianity and Islam, Gabriel prophesied the birth of Jesus. He is regarded by Muslims as the intermediary between God and Muhammad in revealing the Qur’an, where he is known as Jibril. Believing in angels is one of the six Articles of Faith in Islam. In Mormonism he was both Noah in his mortal existence and Gabriel in the realms of heaven. Gabriel is mentioned only twice in the New Testament, the passage “I am Gabriel, who stand before God” (Luke 1:19), have led some to think that he must belong to the highest rank, however he is an archangel which is 8th in rank of the 9 orders of angels. The orders are: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels and Angels.
These are demons, male and female respectively who inhabit people’s dreams in order to have sex with them. One such encounter with an Incubus is said to have resulted in the birth of Merlin, the wizard of Arthurian legend. The Succubus are said to be highly attractive, sustaining their life force by repeated and forced fornication in the presence of the mans wife to the point of complete exhaustion resulting in death.
Metatron is primarily associated with Judaism. The Zohar (a Kabalistic work attributed to Simeon Ben Iochai) identifies him as the Angel who oversaw the exodus of the people of Israel out of Egypt. Many esoteric traditions teach that he is the scribe who takes down God’s words, it is said he has an good sense of humor, and can at times be very mischievous! Metatron is associated with the symbol of a blacksmith’s hammer, which represents the shattering of our realities, and then the forging of new ones.
Referred to as The Guardian of the Abyss, The Scarlet Woman, Mother of Abominations, her place in St. John’s Book of Apocalypse (Revelation) and Enochian magic inspired occultists to elevate her to the position of the liberated woman within the Mystical system of Thelema. This culminated in a series of magical rituals known as the Babalon Working. These took place between January 4 and March 4, 1946 by Jack Parsons (the co-founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory JPL) and his partner and scribe Frater H. The point of these rituals was to invoke and manifest Babalon, then to conceive a child who would bring forward the aeon of Horus and the death of all religion. The success of the rituals has been debated ever since, in esoteric and occult legend. Jack Parsons died in 1952 aged 38 in an explosion at his home, and rumors have persisted of a magical working gone wrong. A crater on the far side of the moon is named after him. After the Babalon working, the scribe, Frater H, eloped with Parson’s wife and his money (a skill he became very good at). The identity of Frater H? None other than L Ron Hubbard the founder of scientology!
Moroni is the name given by Joseph Smith to the angel that he claimed appeared to him several times in the 1820s. Smith believed that he was the keeper of the gold plates upon which was written, the book of Mormon. The plates were written in unusual characters, referred to as “reformed Egyptian”. Smith hid behind a blanket so no one else could see the golden tablets, and translated them into King James style English. Smith claimed that Moroni instructed Smith to use every means at his disposal to facilitate the translation including the use of a magical stone. Mormon theology says that when Smith finished the translation, the angel Moroni took the gold plates away with him to heaven. In 1826 Joseph Smith was charged with being a disorderly person and an impostor by a court in Bainbridge NY.
In Aleister Crowley’s magical system of Thelema, the serpent Choronzon is the ‘dweller’ in the Abyss, the final great obstacle between the magician and true enlightenment. Choronzon is known as the ‘Demon of Dispersion’, and described by Crowley as “a temporary personification of the raving and inconsistent forces that occupy the Abyss.” The name Choronzon though popularized by Aleister Crowley, first occurred in the Enochian records of John Dee (a consultant on many issues to Queen Elizabeth I) where Choronzon is synonymous with the serpent of the garden.
Many civilizations believe in angels, and many names have been given to the various angels. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, the Bible names only three angels that have a definite individual personality. They are Michael – Prince of Angels, Gabriel – Archangel of annunciation, resurrection, mercy, revelation and death, (Gabriel is considered by many theologians to have been female.) and Satan – The Fallen Angel. The Seraphim are said to be the highest order of angels who guard God’s throne. They are often depicted as ‘burning angels’ to represent them on fire with love for God. In the Bible Isaiah saw them as six winged beings. Tradition holds that they were the first creation of God, to enable God to know himself, through their existence and experiences.
Lucifer means “light-bearer” and it is used in various places in the Vulgate Bible as a reference to the planet Venus, a sign of the Zodiac, and “the aurora” (Job 11:17, Job 38:32, Psalm 109:3), and also, most significantly for this list, as the name of the King of Babylon (Isaiah 14:12) which is considered in Christianity to be a metaphor for the Prince of Devils (Lucifer is not considered to be the Devil’s name in Christianity – merely the state from which he fell). The use of the Morning Star metaphor is symbolic of the fall of the light-bearer – as the morning star vanishes in the daylight, so the devil fell from heaven. Interestingly, the word is also used to refer to Jesus in 2 Peter 1:19.

I’ve always been interested in religious mythology.
Good list
May 15th, 2009 at 1:37 am
obviously #6 is a autobot
May 15th, 2009 at 1:39 am
Joseph Smith was charged with being a disorderly person and an impostor by a court in Bainbridge NY.
Joseph Smith was found innocent, I think that it interesting that most of the angel and demon have been written like there are just fact but when it come to moroni it is worded as if it is not true, i.e by useing the word claimed, etc
I think that this person is a little anti-mormon.
other than that i think it is a good list.
May 15th, 2009 at 1:41 am
And #3 a Decepticon?
May 15th, 2009 at 1:42 am
*sigh* I can’t help but notice the rapid decline in listverse’s interesting content recently. I’m tempted to start writing myself.
May 15th, 2009 at 1:44 am
Ehrlich what about his death? Jumping from a prison window because he was afraid he was going to be killed – was that an arrest for a different crime?
May 15th, 2009 at 1:46 am
Eyespire – feel free to send in a contribution
May 15th, 2009 at 1:48 am
Don’t forget the most entertaining demon and angel from ‘Good Omens’. The ultracool demon, Crowley, and the bookish angel, Aziraphale, both destined to roam the Earth until the Apocalypse.
May 15th, 2009 at 1:48 am
i didnt like it to be frank..bad work
May 15th, 2009 at 2:01 am
@Clouds… hahahaha.. true.. they are the coolest devil and angel…
but i think this is a cool list…
May 15th, 2009 at 2:03 am
jfrater
He was not found guilt there as well, and about being afraid to die if you look at the journal of the people around him he new he was going to die, he did not have to go to the prison to await his court case he could of left if he was afraid to die.
and it not know if he jump from the window to save his friend inside (because the mob was after smith not the)
or if he fell out because he was shot.
May 15th, 2009 at 2:20 am
Wow, angels, hope they are true, the only angel i know is my mom,
May 15th, 2009 at 2:22 am
I feel a controversial list coming on
Eyspire: I was noticing a rapid incline in the lists interesting content. I’m not a fan of the food lists but other people are. It depends on taste really (pardon the pun).
May 15th, 2009 at 2:23 am
Ehrlich: I was under the impression that he fled in terror straight out a window. Thanks for clearing up the other points though.
May 15th, 2009 at 2:29 am
ehrlich- i thought it was pretty objective. i dont think there as an anti mormon stance at all.
May 15th, 2009 at 2:35 am
#5 kudos…
jfrater i sent one… but i guess you didnt think it was good. I ran it by some friends (also avid listverse readers) and they liked it
May 15th, 2009 at 2:53 am
maximuz04: what was it? Note that we don’t publish lists immediately necessarily – we do try to have some order behind the site
May 15th, 2009 at 2:55 am
oh – and for the critics – remember this is essentially a one man show (with the exception of comment moderation in which I am helped by Cyn and Mom424) and over the last few days I have been working from 7 in the morning to 10 at night trying to get the site ready for migration so we can resolve the downtime issues we have been having! I still love you all though
May 15th, 2009 at 2:56 am
What about the arch angel?
May 15th, 2009 at 3:00 am
Hey Jamie, Sorry to interrupt… Have patiently waited for the Forums to come back up. My toolbar is not taking me there. Re-direct link not doing the trick either. Suggestions?
May 15th, 2009 at 3:03 am
deeeziner: sorry – I put up the new address too soon – I am still working on them. It is a major PITA at the moment. I will get it sorted as quickly as I can – and if I can’t get it working in the next hour I will restore the old forums and try again tomorrow.
May 15th, 2009 at 3:07 am
When re-directed and I use your “tempory address” link on page this is what i get directed too.

Back on track, interesting list and reading. Thank you Tamala.
Have always liked the existence of angels, I never feel alone.
On the subject of L.Ron Hubbard. I have met some folks who KNOW there is a tie between him and the Manson history that is not common knowledge. But I’ve said too much…
May 15th, 2009 at 3:16 am
jfrater: it was on websites that have changed the way we do things…
May 15th, 2009 at 3:20 am
Does anyone else read the name Metatron and immediately think of Alan Rickman? Or is it just me?
May 15th, 2009 at 3:25 am
Jfrater hi again, hope you and family are well
its very easy to forget that this is pretty much a one man operation, this is something we should all bear in mind.
Ehrlich im not anti-mormon, im just anti-con men, fraudsters, charlatans, snake oil salesmen and people who make the claim “I shall be to this generation the new muhammed” and he WAS convicted by the court in March 1826 where he admitted fraud by organising gold digging expeditions and claiming to posses “necromantic powers”
deeeziner @ 23 Charles Manson did indeed study scientology
your comment is ringing bells in my head (angelic or demonic i dont know yet) but i think its worth having a look at the subject again ty
May 15th, 2009 at 3:31 am
Tamala: thanks – my family is all very well and I am pleased to be back home with them – though am definitely missing my brothers and their families in the UK.
Now, speaking of Scientology, one of my favorite writers (William Burroughs) got involved in Scientology for a short time. Thankfully he was an intelligent man and dumped the lot of it. I really appreciated your mention of Babalon because I have read about Jack Parsons and wanted to add him to a list in the future. I have just had trouble figuring out how to include him. Fortunately you did
We all need to remember the involvement of Hubbard in the occult – it says a lot about him.
May 15th, 2009 at 3:33 am
Tamala1: I notice you are using a new nickname – if you want to email me with your password of choice for “Tamala” I will activate it for you.
May 15th, 2009 at 3:39 am
Thanks Jamie i will.. glad to hear your settled, are you familiar with operation clambake at xenu.net? Wikileaks also has many articles on LRH
May 15th, 2009 at 3:52 am
WAS convicted by the court in March 1826 where he admitted fraud by organising gold digging expeditions and claiming to posses “necromantic powers”
That not True,But i do find it intresting what people think and believe on sudjet
A good place for this kinda Disscutions is The MAD FORUM.
May 15th, 2009 at 3:53 am
Tamala: very very well – the guy that runs it has posted here on some of our scientology lists.
May 15th, 2009 at 3:53 am
Oh – forums are now online again
May 15th, 2009 at 4:03 am
Ehrlich@30,
On March 20, 1826, Joseph Smith, Jr. was brought before the justice of the peace in Bainbridge, New York.
On court records he is referred to as “JOSEPH SMITH THE GLASS LOOKER.” The charge: disturbing the peace.
Arad Stowell testified that he had personally tested Joseph Smith’s abilities and saw clearly that it was nothing but a con job. With his testimony and that of two other men involved, Joseph Smith was found guilty of disturbing the peace.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:16 am
I always thought Satan and Lucifer are the same – so this is not 100% correct then ?
May 15th, 2009 at 4:16 am
I know that Smith Was Charge in 1826 at Bainbridge,
he was taken to court many times but i thought that he has never been proven Guilty.
(The Book of mormon was done after this happen and he organized the church in 1830.)
i do know the history of smith,
i find it all very intresting i been reading a book about porter Rockwell one of smith close friends,it very intresting,
it be cool if there was a list about some westen gun slingers.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:17 am
I once had a dream of an Angel that appeared to me one night. As I went into a deep sleep, I was in a valley that seemed to be located some .place in Isrrael because of the building architecture designs located there. It was a large valley and as I stood there I saw the skys turned purple and very large as if a fierce storm was approoaching. There were people around me that were panic strickened and everyone was full of fear. There were peals of lightning shooting from the dark purple sky and from the deepest reaches of the clouds there came a bright light with the sound of a very loud horn or trumpet playing a long blast that shook the earth. It was truly a fearsome sight and as the bright powerful light came closer I saw a person get down on their knees with their arms stretched out to the sky praying something I could not understand. Suddenly the multitude of people all kneeled down and did the same.
After a minute or so of praying there appeared an angel Bright as the SUN not far in the sky above us that only said “Prepare the way of the Lord for your datys draw near” and then the Angel disappeared and the skys turn normal again. All the people that were there were astonished at what they saw and were changed somehow.
Thats when I woke up and wrote the dream down immediately. It was the most incredible dream I had ever had.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:24 am
claireB
No you’re not the only one. Pants down etc.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:45 am
Yep, me too claireB. The Metatron is forever synonymous with Mr Rickman in my mind. And further to that, Gabriel is Christopher Walken from The Prophecy
May 15th, 2009 at 4:53 am
Tamala1 / Tamala:
feh to the naysayers – interesting list. Thank you.
May 15th, 2009 at 4:57 am
I love religious mythology, its so interesting. Thanks a lot for posting this, it makes me want to start researching about angels again
May 15th, 2009 at 5:39 am
Interesting list. I liked number 7. Had to research them for a pschycology class. Good job Tamala!
May 15th, 2009 at 5:40 am
peejee@34
Lucifer was a Roman deity anthropomorphisized as the planet we now call Venus, and the one that gave birth to Gnosticism – this is the main reason he came to be identified as the same being who was the enemy or adversary of the Abrahamic God. (the word Satan, from the Arabic “Al Shaitan” means a human adversary of God)
May 15th, 2009 at 5:42 am
I couldn’t stop laughing at Metatron.
Come on, his name is almost that of a Transformer!
Loved the list, I find all these mythical ones awesome.
May 15th, 2009 at 5:46 am
Yay, religious stuff is awesome to read about!
#5 made a whole bunch of Crade of Filth song titles make more sense…
May 15th, 2009 at 5:58 am
I loved Balthamos and Baruch from Pullman’s trilogy. Yeah, just a story but aren’t they all…
May 15th, 2009 at 6:47 am
@Tamala
Can you cite some sources?
May 15th, 2009 at 6:52 am
Sweeeeet list! Good job Tamala!
May 15th, 2009 at 7:03 am
boring
May 15th, 2009 at 7:11 am
For number 2, isn’t Raphael also another ‘distinct’ archangel? I’m only saying this for the sake of my name
But it might only be in Catholic bibles because some don’t have the Deuteronomy books.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:15 am
Moroni sounds more like a Moron.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:24 am
Very cool list, thanks Tamala!
You know, not all lists need to be bizarre or controversial in order to be interesting.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:47 am
Thanks for the list! I access this site religiously! yuk yuk, but no seriously, i love it all, i’m always learning new information. Where are the black stick men for the demons part of this list???
May 15th, 2009 at 7:50 am
I always loved Religious Mythology XD I think it makes up for the fact that I’m not religious in the least ^^;
An interesting point, I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed this yet, but has anyone taken a good look at the picture for number 9?
I think I see a womanly shape in those folds.
May 15th, 2009 at 7:57 am
Phew! Just returned from presenting the award show on the previous ‘American’ list. Glad to come back to peace and calm – ahhh. That’s great..
I myself have looked into a few of these on my way to mapping the metaphysical universe – in my head of course. What I didn’t know initially was that Lucifer, Satan, and the Devil are supposed (by some) to be different things – I always thought they are names for the same thing. Oh well.
At this point, I could go on to reveal a few secrets of the universe – ohhh I feel so much around this subject – but I won’t. Innocence is bliss. However, anyone who’s already into theosophy can’t go wrong by researching into the Snake (or serpent power), or to look up ‘The Void’ – something I am getting nearer to myself.
Do these subjects ‘exist?’ Well, on one level, that’s up to you. If you think they don’t – then they don’t – so there is no point raising the issue, frankly. If you think they do – then they do – but you could never hope to convince anybody of that here. Only presencing through feeling can do that. …So it all depends on how you feel; at this point in your life. On another level of course, what each of us may think has no bearing on ‘actuality’. Existence will still operate – no matter what we may think about it doing so.
Right! I’m off for a ciggie.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Nice list Tamala –
Know of some of these by name but have never really looked them up.
Hope to see the Joseph Smith deal explained more factually.
By the way – on LRH, I had heard that he had bragged (pre-scientology) that he could create a practicing religion through fiction easily – looks like he did.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Very interesting list! I was surprised by how many I knew, since I am not religious. There is an anecdote about the picture for #5 that may not be general knowledge: It’s a tarot card designed by Lady Frieda Harris with Aleister Crowley. The artwork for all the cards are quite beautiful. I have heard that the magical workings Parsons had been working on had been authored by Aleister Crowley, who instructed the mixture of some very volatile chemicals Parsons should have known would cause an explosion, but where mixed anyway in the faith Crowley knew what he was talking about…
May 15th, 2009 at 8:18 am
i was thinking about the angel michael and isn’t cupid an angel, too?
hehehehe
May 15th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Was disappointed not to see Archangel Michael on the list.
Michael is considered to be:
*the lead archangel
*supreme enemy of Satan (it was Michael who cast Satan out)
*the only archangel to wield a weapon
*the only archangel mentioned by name in the Bible as recognized by Jews and Christians (Jude 1:9)
Gabriel is in the book of Luke and is considered an archangel.
Raphael is in the book of Tobit (part of Catholic Canon).
Uriel is in the book of Enoch.
Azrael is an archangel (with Michael, Gabriel, Raphael) in Islamic.
The Roman Catholic feast on September 29th honors Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Kir:
I agree! The series also mentions Metatron, however, he doesn’t seem to have much of a sense of humor in that.
Very interesting list.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:36 am
well, jfrater, i think i still love you too. i’m considering forgiving you for publishing the list that was “yesterday: 1000 comments of unpleasantness and hatred, brought to you by listverse!”
and tamala, love the list. this is fascinating stuff even for atheists like me, thanks.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:44 am
#6 sounds like something from transformers
May 15th, 2009 at 8:51 am
I’m adding Pazuzu to this list… straight out of Assyrian
folklore hell and into Regan Mcneil.
Here’s to vomiting up a bucket of pea soup!
May 15th, 2009 at 8:57 am
Archangel Michael – the Warrior (he cast out Satan)
Archangel Gabriel – the Speaker or Announcer (he announced the births of Jesus and John the Baptist)
Archangel Raphael – the Healer (healed Tobias in the Book of Tobit, and delivered Sarah, Jesus’ daughter-in-law)
May 15th, 2009 at 8:58 am
Great list, although I’m kind of puzzled by the ‘related lists’ box. Another 10 fascinating food facts? What?
May 15th, 2009 at 9:42 am
I like this list… timing/relevance is as good as can be I think. There are of course many more angels in many different traditions. Kabbalah has an archangel for every planet for example. I like that angels an demons were drawn from various disciplines and schools of thought.
But yeah, I would have included Michael, although it does seem most people are already familiar with him. Also would have included Sandalphon as he is said to precipitate the connection between humans and the divine (answering of prayer and spiritual connection).
Also the Metatron entry could have been expanded considering he sits at the top of the tree of life. And probably does look like Alan Rickman.
May 15th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Giggles
I have named my cats and a horse after 3 of this angel/demons.
Lucifer (Lucyfur)
Azrael
Gabriel
*snickers*
May 15th, 2009 at 10:40 am
This list reminded me of the movie “Dogma”. One of my favorite quotes:
Metatron: “Human beings have neither the aural nor the psychological capacity to withstand the awesome power of God’s true voice. Were you to hear it, your mind would cave in and your heart would explode within your chest. We went through five Adams before we figured that one out.”
May 15th, 2009 at 11:01 am
fuck joesph smith, mormons are stupid
May 15th, 2009 at 11:19 am
#68: oouchan – Great movie. I’ve enjoyed quite a few Kevin Smith flicks. There is also quite a bit of metaphor in their to keep enthusiasts chuckling too. – just like your quote.
You see, the further you go down the ‘metaphysical’ road, the more your finding go beyond words – realisations actually feel more like feelings – and how hard is it to describe a feeling? The number of times my ex-wife caught me coming to bed and asked “What’ve you been thinking about?” only for the same “I can’t explain it” answer. The only way I could ever do it would be through 4D animation, or through metaphor – so that’s what you discover in holy books all over the world.
BTW, can we not reply to antagonists on this list please? We all know who they are… let’s keep a peace in here.
May 15th, 2009 at 11:19 am
25. claireB–Probably would never know Metatron without Alan and Dogma. Oh and now this list too.
58. Copperdragon–Sept. 29 is an important date to my marriage–Glad to see that the Catholics re-cog-nize.lol
65. Tsiamon–But you didn’t wonder about “10 Tips for a Great First Date?
May 15th, 2009 at 11:28 am
70. Lifeschool: I like that. It goes with the how Rufus from Dogma brought up that we should not focus on the “belief” but the “idea”.
May 15th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
69. tron – what if you were born a weird freak? It’s not Joseph Smith’s fault that he was born with a faulty brain. he didn’t choose to be the biggest wacko in human history, the poor, crazy fellow… lmao.
May 15th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
72: Oouchan – Yes, that’s it! ‘The Idea’ goes beyond words. To remain open to the ‘idea’ goes beyond, because we are talking about things beyond labels (I nearly said ‘realms’ then, but that is ALSO a misguiding, very material, label). You see how hard it gets? – to describe things which are not material (or ‘things’) at all. You see??
Alright, you talked me into it. Lets break something down. I’ll label it ‘Levels of Perception’. Ok, imagine there are nine levels of perception [this is going to have to be basic... I know]. On the bottom level there is Sensory perception. This is the very base, primal, animal perception we are all born with, and it gives us information which we translate and make judgements upon. Most people never find any need to move beyond this place – and why should they; they judge? To these, everything has a label, and everything can be judged.
Ok, beyond this we get into the realms of ‘thinking out of the box’ stuff. By the fourth level of perception, the enquirer is getting pretty fed up of judging and being judged, and tries to give it up as a bad job. Who cares what YOU think? That’s right, YOU do – and the thought of trying to ‘make’ someone else think as you do begins to make you feel aweful, rather domineering – and a bit sick. And still the enquirer questions. Until level 7 is reached; and everytime an enquiry is made, the only answer is ‘It doesn’t matter’ – which gets infuriating – because you are trying to judge things which only really serve YOU. It is the last gasp at trying to satisfy something within you that really needs an answer – any answer. Beyond that is the void/the abyss/the black gap(norse mythology); where everything is ‘pointless and meaningless’ and trying to add a ‘point’ or a ‘meaning’ to things would itself be ‘pointless and meaningless’.
It would be easy to cry in pain at the meaninglessness of judgement/perception at this point – but to judge such a perception would be in itself pointless – so the chaos continues and them subsides after a while; to leave you with – …nothing! By this stage, the walls of the mind HAVE broken down, but the heart has not yet opened. This level (level 7) is also the last time any of it makes ’sense’ – because to make sense of things means you are still judging – still within ego. Beyond this place, only a handful of people have gone. You can’t get there by following words (or you’d all be there now thanks to mine) but though the journey. The good news is that we all get to level 8 when we die and become part of existence (and then forget this at birth). Level 10 is the ‘creator’ (which is not a ‘him’, a ‘thing’ or an ‘it’ – because this is beyond our capasity to even comprehend – and therefore you cannot perceive it directly – hence only nine levels of perception).
Alright, perhaps a few found interest in my little analogy. None of these levels exist, nor does anything else – it’s just a story, a metaphor for things I… could never… rationally… understand.
I also have no desire to be ‘enlightened’ BTW. How could I? This concept would be a very egotistical perception in itself…..

74. Lifeschool: Maybe not enlightened but thought provoking. Many will read and begin taking that first step. Then it will become their own enlightenment. Great ways to get to that point…by making a mind reach and learn on its own. Which boils down to: It is easier to change/update an idea then to change/update a belief. To be mired into one thought process without “seeing” beyond is a tragedy to me.
All in all…I did enjoy your post….gives me an idea!

I grew up Mormon and while I do not consider myself to be one any more I am tired of hearing such bad things about Joseph Smith. I believe he was a man with good intentions that believed strongly in what he taught. He lived his life in terror, being tarred and feathered, burned and beaten. People do not go through those sorts of things in order to ‘con’ or mislead people into some sort of a scam. I’ve read the anti mormon literature, the pro mormon literature and the literature written by people who say they have no opinions one way or the other. If you back through true historical documents you will find that he made the mistakes every man made but did many good things few men do. He was a good man, a tortured man, and now a dead man who deserves your respect.

Lifeschool, i take your familiar with nine levels of perception in some Buddhist traditions and Timothy Leary’s 8 circuit model of Consciousness, interesting stuff … enjoyed your comment

75: Oouchan. Thank you very kindly. The LAST thing I want people to think is that I’m trying to appear Hollier-than-thou; an ego’d teacher preaching egolessness. I am a very fallable human being – as you know – as we all are. I don’t have any answers for anyone, just a view; a comment.
I’m not perfect – but then what is perfection? An ideal? A standard? – aww I’m sick of all that judging – I can’t do it anymore… When something works and feels right, then it’s it. It is that. I said in an earlier post that I didn’t want to write things like this, mainly because I don’t want to offend anyone – if it conflicts with their views; but it felt right, and yes, maybe something will come of it.

#35: Ehrlich- Which book about Port are you reading? He is my Grandfather 9 generations back. Very interesting man, too bad he is not as famous as he should be. Would be #1 on any old west gunslinger list.
#50. Sugen- The name Moroni means someone from the Land of Moron, a location in the Book of Mormon.
Yes, I am a practicing Mormon.
Back to the topic at hand. A few tidbits about Gabriel from a Mormon. He is believed to be Noah from the Old Testament. The Angel Michael is said to be Adam, The Ancient of Days.

the angel moroni’s earthly life- as captain moroni – was amazing. he was the one that hid the plates to prepare for the restoration. he came down to help Joseph Smith prepare for the restoration. probably one of my favorites from the scriptures…
Moroni is a trumpeter on the top of one spire on many LDS temples. he is one amazing fellow

I was actually visited by an Incubus one night. It was actually looking for my girlfriend at the time, but we had switched places in bed that night and apparently didn’t bother checking. I was sore for quite some time after that.

Come and meet the “real” Choronzon. Something like a “risen demon” – the opposite of a “fallen angel”, in a way. Choronzon has risen up from the Abyss to give the world more choices than “good vs. evil”.

Joe Smith was facing the firing squad when he was shot. being shot caused him to fall out of the window.
i know this because he was doing the Masonic signal of distress. you have to be facing people in order to do it.

Man being #9 Azrael would suck
Always erasing and writing births and deaths…
I can imagine his work day…
“Hey Jesus, will you leave me the heck alone? Can’t you see how much work I have for friggin’ sakes.”
“Man, Jesus and his Dad…always on my back. did you get this birth…that death…and then the old man wants me to write neat. Dang I’m busting my hump just trying to keep up and He is talking about neatness. No break either.”
“I would give one of my faces for a coffee break. And I got a pee like a race horse here. And would it kill anyone if I got a raise? Look all of the mouths I have on me that I have to feed.”

The book of Mormon was actually written starting in about 600bc and ending around 421ad. Captain Moroni was the last person to have the book before Joseph Smith translated it in the 1800s. So he is not named after a place in a book, rather a place from the past.

36. Cybogen – it was the Rapture!
I had a dream once where I visited the Other Side. There’s a beautiful skating rink there and I skated on it. This was well before I learned to skate, and in the dream I was doing a spiral even though I didn’t know what it was called at the time. Since I’ll never do triple jumps in this lifetime, I can’t wait to get there and do them. I feel that I’ll be doing good to get all my singles.

perhaps the wording “smith claimed” was used not to signify special doubt in moroni, but in reference to the fact that for all of the supposed beings on this list, smith’s case is the only one where the first recorded encounter with humanity supposedly occurred in historic times to a known person. (especially likely as the list author has weighed in as not being specially anti-mormon.)
if any of the other stories included “claims” of modern literal encounters by known people they would probably be mentioned with such a wording too.
for example, if the story was “and aleister crowley claimed a physical incarnation of choronzon would appear to the initiate at the pivotal moment when they first glimpsed their true will” then i’m sure the word “claimed” would be used. however, i’ve studied crowley and as far as i know he never made that claim, i just invented it.
i don’t think smith was singled out by anything other then the fact that we know the details of his encounter story. any other specific stories, such as: “and john later claimed he’d been saved as a babe by the angel uriel” can’t be told because they supposedly happened so far in the past that john himself is only “claimed” to exist, proof from contemporary sources -if there ever was any- has been lost to time.

but isn’t the only source of this information the book of mormon itself? are there other documents from anywhere in 600BC-421AD that support this? or any that appeared post 421AD yet prior to smith’s “translation”?
and no, i’m not singling out the book of mormon on this, most of the torah/christian old and new testaments totally lack any independent corroboration outside themselves. even older religious texts, like the sacred works of india, have this problem too (but followers don’t seem as bothered about it, as they seem less obsessed with whether things like ancient sky battles happened with word-for-word literalness than with their meaning and symbolism.)
heck, totally non-religious bits of “history” aren’t considered legitimate until they can be corroborated by physical evidence -like when we (modern people) actually found the “mythical” city of troy (and thus moved it out of the realm of myth), or at least references in multiple, independent, contemporary sources.
May 15th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
96. lo -
well yes. you would have to believe that the book of mormon was written by ancients to look at it as a true historical record. but there is some supporting evidence out there.
much of the book of mormon actually takes place in the americas. the lamanites, a race of people described in the book went through rituals and had many cultural similarities to that of the aztecs. it describes something about how the lamanites turned to human sacrifices and “other abominations.”
another thing that was once used to critisize the book of mormon was that it mentions the use of cement. at that point, we thought cement didn’t even exist back then. now, we have found new evidence of the use of cement during that time period.
so, we are slowly finding “physical evidence” that the book of mormon could exist as an accurate historical record, but other than that, i don’t know of any records or documents from that time period.

I’ve studied and practiced Goetia for nearly fifteen years and it’s sad to see it missed almost completely here when it is very important to the topic.
May 16th, 2009 at 1:24 am
Mr Graves@98
I tried to include different beliefs and practices in this list as best i could, tho it does centre on Abrahamic beliefs i could have included many more, its difficult to put items like this in a few brief sentences while keeping it as informative to as many people as possible. I think i would have done Goetia a huge dis-service by including it here, it would be very difficult for people who arent familiar with it, to make any sense of it. Clavicula Salomonis Regis would have been a great place to start, but as you know, if your not at the right stage of your existence, you cant validate or understand it.
May 16th, 2009 at 1:37 am
danny@92 thanks for taking the time to reply, lo@96 correctly identifies this as circular logic, a very common fallacy used by people of faith in many traditions.
As you bring up the subject of 600bc id like to ask your thoughts regarding item 1 on this list Lucifer.
Lucifer is a big problem to Mormons who claim that an ancient record was written beginning in about 600 BC, and that the author in 600 BC supposedly copied Isaiah in Isaiah’s original words. When Joseph Smith translated(?) the supposed ‘ancient record’, he included the Lucifer verse in the Book of Mormon. Obviously he wasn’t copying what Isaiah actually wrote as the word doesnt appear there until the KJV,he was therefor copying the KJV.
Another book of LDS scripture, the Doctrine & Covenants, furthers this problem in 76:26 when it affirms the false Christian doctrine that “Lucifer” means Satan. This incorrect doctrine also spread into a third set of Mormon scriptures, the Pearl of Great Price, which describes a war in heaven based, in part, on Joseph Smith’s incorrect interpretation of the word “Lucifer” which only appears in Isaiah.

“Many esoteric traditions teach that he is the scribe who takes down God’s words, it is said he has an good sense of humor, and can at times be very mischievous! Metatron is associated with the symbol of a blacksmith’s hammer, which represents the shattering of our realities, and then the forging of new ones.”
METATRON, whose name, when looked at correctly sounds like a ROBOT, is both ANGEL AND ROBOT. Angel and Robot are one of the same. Metatron facilitated the revelation of SPACESHIP JESUS and myself.
Praise be Metatron and PRAISE BE SPACESHIP JESUS!!!

Perhaps 101 is a scientologist? I’ m not quite sure what scientology is though…
Haha anyway, interesting list… I would’ve liked to have seen Michael on there as a separate, but great list nonetheless!
Oh, and on the Gabriel note, because Gabriel is a seraphim as well, he/she/it is not simply of 8th ranking… but also of 1st… i think most of the archangels also posses a higher rank.

76: Tamala: – “I take [it] your familiar with nine levels of perception in some Buddhist traditions and Timothy Leary’s 8 circuit model of Consciousness?”
To be honest, I didn’t know a thing about these – which is surprising since I spent a year with the buddhists. The Leary model seems to have a lot to do with drug use to reach those states temporarily; which I can see may work for some people. But as someone once said; drugs will only get you half way. Having tracked down the buddhist model I can see it is a very good tool for initiates. Yes, I found buddhism was very good at opening the mind to alternative thinking, the Dharma may be basic, but it is still worlds away from base perception. It is also written in a way that ANYBODY can understand and get into.
Does philosophy have to be very complex? No, of course not. The purest wisdom is very basic – any fool can understand it – and anyone clouding the issue with long and complex jargon is simply trying to convey a degree of self-importance. No, the ones who really know are meek, very humble, very empathic, and sometimes quite reclusive in that they have moved away from social norms and social thinking. [Monks].
Does enlightenment come as a result of not judging anything or anybody? No. How about giving up all desires, and all aversions, and seeing life just as it is and just as it isn’t? No. How about putting one’s self in isolation without any needs or desires what-so-ever? No. What about if I overcome the ego completely? No. What if I dedicate my life to others? No – then you are in martyrdom, and that is still ego. Even desiring to have NO desires is still ego – and at the end of the day, ‘it doesn’t matter’ what YOU want. As far as I can work out (at this stage), Enlightenment is about feelings and has nothing to do with the brain/mind at all. You cannot ‘get there’ per se, but you can be open towards it.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the fact that Metatron is believed by some to be the most powerful non-divine entity in heaven, kind of like a Speaker of the House where God is the President. He’s supposedly the only entity, besides God, that can sit down in heaven, as he is the Heavenly Scribe, and somebody (I don’t remember who) even thought he was a second God.
May 16th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
tamala@100 -
okay actually, D&C 76:26 does not say that Lucifer means Satan. Here is D&C 76:25-28:
“25 And this we saw also, and bear record, that an angel of God who was in authority in the presence of God, who rebelled against the Only Begotten Son whom the Father loved and who was in the bosom of the Father, was thrust down from the presence of God and the Son,
26 And was called Perdition, for the heavens wept over him—he was Lucifer, a son of the morning.
27 And we beheld, and lo, he is fallen! is fallen, even a son of the morning!
28 And while we were yet in the Spirit, the Lord commanded us that we should write the vision; for we beheld Satan, that old serpent, even the devil, who rebelled against God, and sought to take the kingdom of our God and his Christ—”
So yeah, it says that Lucifer was an Angel of God, and he was a son of the morning.
We believe that it Lucifer became Satan when he was cast out of heaven for rebelling against God, as it mentions in Moses 4:1-4 of the Pearl of Great Price:
” 1 And I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.
2 But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me—Father, thy dwill be done, and the glory be thine forever.
3 Wherefore, because that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten, I caused that he should be cast down;
4 And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my voice.”
The war in heaven is is when Satan rebelled. in the above scripture, it is saying that Lucifer stepped up and said, “I will be the Savior, and i will force them to come to God, and i will be glorified forever.” but then another spirit, the spirit of Jesus says, “Send me, and i will do the will of God, and the glory will all be God’s glory.” So Jesus was chosen, and Satan rebelled, and one third of the spirits in heaven followed him..
That is a little bit of what i understand about the topics, but then again, i am only 15.
May 16th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
danny-
thanks for taking the time to put those explanations out there for all of us. i’m assuming D&C is the mormon “document(s?) and covenants”? forgive me if i messed that up. i was raised catholic, chose to leave that faith more than a decade ago, and studied many other versions of faith in the interim, but i have undoubtedly missed many details of the many religions the world offers.
i personally don’t agree with the versions of ‘god’ found in nearly all religions, but i can see you are a person of faith, and a young person who will keep growing -in whatever faith you feel is real and in all aspects of life- for many years to come.
so thanks again for sharing your perspective. even if it is far different from mine, if it brings you solace, meaning, or comfort i am very happy you have it in your life. and welcome to listverse -we sometimes have great discussions around here (and the fair share of asshats and trolls you’ll find everywhere online.)
take care

fascinating subject matter, though my favourite demon PAZUZU did not make the list. he is one mean demon, though pregnant women used to wear a Pazuzu amulet because he kept away female demons who would target pregnant women.
He was also the demon in The Exorcist that claimed to be the Devil, but was really Pazuzu.

Yes Mabel. Thank-You for reading my dream. i can tell you how real it seemed and impression it left on me was very strong. I had doubts before about some of those events occuring but after my premonition of it I had no doubt whatsoeve. It is truly to occur soon and I believe in our lifetime.

Carlos Santana claims to speak to Metatron daily.
My theory about the Satan/Jesus similarity is that Paul was actually visited and instructed by Satan, not Jesus, and he’s the enemy of prophecy… think about it, he came and radically altered Christianity in his own name.
Anyway.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:25 am
First of all this list should come from someone with knowledge of angels and demons. This list obviously came from someone with a very small part of information. I have been studying spirituality and religion for almost 20 years now and this list sucks. There will never be facts when it involves something outside of scientific research but we can all make an effort towards educating ourselves on these things. This list is wrong in so many ways that I am not gonna mention them. Let’s see if the writer of this list can figure it out. No insults intended it’s just that the person who wrote this list did very little research and came up very short.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:32 am
Red Man- You are not being particularly helpful by just saying this list is horribly incorrect and then not saying how. You say that there were “no insults intended” in your comments, but if this was really the case, you would offer constructive criticism (aka, backing up your claim that there are numerous errors in this) rather than just criticizing and saying “this list sucks”. While I personally don’t have a whole lot of expertise in the area of theology (though, personally, I think that I do have more than the average person), and this list seemed just fine to me. Sure, it isn’t going to be included in any theological studies any time soon, but it was a good introduction to a few angels and demons for a lay-person like me.
So, either contribute constructively when you say that this list is wrong, or lay off of the author, who did have to put some effort into writing this.

I have read through many of these listed herein and found a mix og Holy Angels and evil Angels. Needless to say that we all hope to encounter the holy angels as they are the messengers of God that help us in our journey of life to gain our way into heaven. However we know of the demons the evil angels that roam within the realm of our existence doing battle with the Holy Angels to steal our souls. We must realize this as a reality for the battle of good angels against evil angels is continuously happening though we cannot see it. This is Gods will to save us from the temptations of sin that can lead mankind to the eternal torments of hellfire. The Holy Angels battle against the snare of demons to work at saving our souls for heaven with all their strength. The deciding factor on the victory of good against evil is how we choose to react to tempmtation. My friends please do not be misled that these angels are not for real but they are there and are very strong and indeed working our in our desires and we must pay heed to them through our hearts and conscience to save our souls to the committment of God almighty.

You say a “very small part of information” No, a very small part of a huge subject condensed into a few easy to follow, but straight to the point lines, for people with huge, some and no knowledge of the subject, i dont know if you have written a list for this site but if you have, you will understand.
“There will never be facts when it involves something outside of scientific research” Where did i present anything as fact?
“This list is wrong in so many ways that I am not gonna mention them.”
This list is open to many subjective interpretations some of which are mentioned in the list description, therefor it is wrong, subject to what?

RE #6/Moroni
So do we blame the Moronic Angel, the Moronic Smith, or the Moronic Magic Stone for the 30,000 specifically identified plagiarized errors from King James English to the Moronic Book of Mormon?
WHOOPS — Didn’t figure on Literary experts did ya there JO!?

So I guess he must be on his lunch break right now.
