This list is a teaser for our new book due out in November, the Ultimate Book of Bizarre Lists, featuring lists not found on this site or anywhere! You can pre-order a copy now and you can also buy our first book. Also, the first five people who write a review of the first book on Amazon can email me their address to receive a free copy of both books in November. Get in quick! This list looks at birth defects – the dread of every expectant parent. Some are fairly well know while others are, thankfully, extremely rare. Warning: some images on this list may disturb.

We are all familiar with the tales of Siamese twins (named for the country of birth of the first known conjoined twins). It is, of course, a rare disorder in which twins are born joined together at one or more parts of their bodies. In the most rare cases, children can be born joined at the top of their head. Sometimes Siamese twins can be separated, allowing both to live full lives, but more frequently, this is not possible.

Ambras Syndrome is a disorder that causes someone to be born with excessive hair over the face and body. This is fortunately a very rare disease; in fact, there are only 40 humans in the world with it at present. The disease is extremely debilitating for children, as they are often rejected by their peers.

Fused limbs are two limbs which are joined together. This can happen in some cases with toes or fingers, but in a recent case in Peru, a young girl was born with her legs completely fused, giving her the appearance of a mermaid. One in every 70,000 babies has this disorder.

Cyclopia is named for the famous mythical creature the Cyclops. Children born with cyclopia have one eye in the middle of their head. It is believed that the cause may be related to certain cancer treatment drugs taken by pregnant women.

Craniopagus parasiticus is a condition in which a child is born with a parasitic extra head from their unborn twin. There have only been ten cases of it in documented history, with only three surviving birth. In one bizarre case, the second head was able to smile, blink, cry, and suckle.

Foetus in foetu is when a child is born with his twin inside him, giving the appearance of pregnancy. Both twins are usually formed from one egg, but during the pregnancy, one is absorbed by the other and it begins to live off it like a parasite. Surgery can usually remove the undeveloped twin from the stronger one with no ill effects.

Children who are born with this disease grow bone in areas that are hurt. Where a child is injured and would normally scar or have their skin grow back, the child suffering from fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva develops bone in sufficiently large quantities that it can become debilitating, with the excess bone fusing joints. The bone cannot be removed in surgery because it would cause more bone to grow in the surgery wounds.

Progeria occurs in one in eight million births. It causes a child to look aged well beyond their years. Children with progeria lose their hair, develop wrinkles, and take on the facial characteristics of the very old. Severe arterial damage caused by the disease means that most sufferers die by the time they hit adolescence.

Vestigial tail is when a child is born with a semi-functional tail, complete with muscles, nerves, skin, and blood vessels. It is believed to be caused by a mutation of the genes that exist in infants to cause the cellular death of body parts that are not needed.

Anencephaly is the absence of a brain and spinal chord. There is no cure and most anencephalic babies die during childbirth. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “a baby born with anencephaly is usually blind, deaf, unconscious, and unable to feel pain. Although some individuals with anencephaly may be born with a main brain stem, the lack of a functioning cerebrum permanently rules out the possibility of ever gaining consciousness. Reflex actions such as breathing and responses to sound or touch occur.”

Pictured above is the bonus item – a giant baby born to a mother who was a mere 5 foot tall! The baby weighed in at 400 tons. In the picture you can see a team of family members preparing the baby to go to hospital for its shots. This item is the bonus because it is obviously not real

I'm familiar with Progeria… saw it in a hindoostani movie called paa. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1532957/
I remember this kind of case in a movie… The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) by Brad Pitt.
XD loved the last one, and that included some which I haven't come across yet, liek the one with ni skull, that was scary
.
Good list overall, thanks frater!
like the one with no skull* or should i say cranium.
Poor children!!
Depressing but decent list.
I laughed for about five minutes at that gigantic baby! Good list, though.
ok
Major WTF on the bonus item.
These are the times I'm glad to be a (relatively) healthy adult. Great though disturbing list!
Wow, I'm shocked, disgusted and sad all at the same time.
Ah thanks for the correction – I have changed the image.
No worries. I love this kind of list! Thank you
great list jf — really interesting and unexpected.
but i have to ask —
i know the bonus was fake — it's pretty clear just by looking at it. but what were the circumstances surrounding the pic? it is funny as *****, but for a joke photo, it seems as if it would have been a pain in the ass to shoot / manipulate / what have you.
The giant baby is a piece of artwork. They were moving the piece either to or from where it was installed
I love horror movies and I am a huge fan of medical shows on the Discovery Channel like the programs about half ton dudes and "tree men", but I was not prepared for the pictures in this list. Needless to say, sometimes real life is indeed more horrifying than fiction and the toned down documentaries shown on TV.
I believe that the photo for #8 is another example of parasiticus or parasitic-conjoined twins rather than fused limbs. I love this site and check it every day to read the new list!
Disturbing, sorry
The Bonus one I saw in an art gallery :3
I know how it feels to suffer with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP, item #4). I had a milder version of this disease called Myositis Ossificans. I injured my hip long back and didn't seek any medical attention since it was a minor internal injury. Few days later the pain kept growing and growing and I couldn't sit, stand, sleep or even crap properly. Any slight movement of leg would cause excruciating pain.
Visited several doctors but none of those guys were able to diagnose it properly and they were thinking that it is some kind of cancer or tumor. Luckily I found a doc who diagnose it properly and it was curable. God! I recovered miraculously!
Whoa!!! no.6 is crazy!!! holy ***** ! "In one bizarre case, the second head was able to smile, blink, cry, and suckle" what the ???, who ??? but ,why??!! ….*****!!
You have to have a strong stomach to let that suckle you…only a woman (well mother) could handle that, a guy would probably put a big jar over it and slide a magazine underneath and throw it on the compost head , then burn his cloths and cry in a cold shower. I am gobsmacked . Jesus belly flopping Christ .
You’re funny.
awww shucks…….
ya know no one knows what life has in store for them,i just hope that someday something will open your eyes and heart.but hopefully you"ll never be able to bare children cause i can see what kind of dad you will be should you have a child thats not born perfect..just remeber god creates us all no matter what people my think or how much others laugh we are special in gods eyes
I rofl'd
you just made my day
The father of the twins handle it fine considering he (and his wife) found out via the newspaper. Islam (the ‘head’ twin in the picture) was nearly sucessfully removed…only to have the surviving (“full”) twin die at a later date.
Some of the things one can not un see
These things are horrible. BUT if you want to see even WORSE, check out what has happened to Iraqi children which have been explained to depleted uranium. WARNING: Not for the faint hearted.
armadillo does have a point.
i dont know about *worse* — in fact, some of the photos in this link are just other examples of things on the list. http://www.xs4all.nl/~stgvisie/VISIE/extremedefor…
I nearly cried looking at the photos and in fact had to close the window before seeing all of the pictures. It's absolutely heartbreaking to see these things, especially if there is a known cause for it.
Oh, how horrid!
This is a sample of what happens in chemical warfare. Everyone is a target. Even the unborn. Even the not yet conceived.
It is a horror beyond anything else I can imagine, and the perfect way for mankind to finally find a way to wipe itself from the face of the earth.
Crikey D: that's unfortunate
That's it, Im not having kids…
I love bizzare lists and this was a great one. Sad though.
Yikes! Carniopagus parasiticus is creepy. i pity that baby’s twin. he’s only born with a head….and lifeless
FML, I was eating dinner, I thought I would be able to handle these images as I would of probably seen them before in biology. I haven’t seen haf of these anymore, thanks for the list, I now know of more birth defects. But god, that cyclopia one always gets to me. So scary. There are pictures of preserved babies with this condition stored in a jar. Those are disgusting.
I was eating dinner too…
For those of you who has the same interest in the above as myself i recommend reading:
Mutants http://amzn.to/dmk7KD
A Cabinet of Medical Curiosities http://amzn.to/aipAo5
The former is a bit hard to read as it focuses on the genes that causes mutations, but it is worth a read. The latter tell stories about people who became famous because of their defects.
Another great list to satisfy our ever-expanding, inexhaustible curiosity of morbid and weird diseases, this time those inflicting babies.
birth defects are normally detected at birth
Oh my crazy list I love it
I love the list thanks!!! Awesome job!
Three words : Harlequin-type Ichthyosis. Google it, and check out the pictures and the videos. It's the most disturbing birth defect I have ever seen.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlequin-type_ichth…
http://www.google.co.za/images?hl=en&source=i…
holy crap dude , you are sooo right .
Eww thats crazy.
According to Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, if you survive long enough with Harlequin-type Ichthyosis you are eligible to enter a tournament whose outcome will decide the fate of the world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs3ROFNxa5M
for some reason i cant pull up this wiki link (so i dont know if this is a repeat or not — if so,,*sorry*)
this has more info—-: http://www.firstskinfoundation.org/content.cfm?pa…
and this one tells about the gene theyve identified as being involved—-: http://www.firstskinfoundation.org/content.cfm?pa…
I was waiting for somebody to mention that. I knew SOMEBODY would. Imagine giving birth to that…. We all talk about these poor babies, but really, these poor mothers.
No Elephant Man? And Proteus Syndrome?
Too J,Fraterean!
Even with a degree in classical music, I'm not sure how to play a spinal chord.
Is the human race mutating, or are these are result of 1) more people being born, so more things go wrong; 2) better medical care means more of these sufferers are living longer and 3) photographic evidence means we all get to see it, instead of the local village, town, city or country.
In one class last year I had one student with the fourth and fifth fingers of one hand webbed together, one with a small second last-bone of the fifth finger (ie two fingertips) and one with no last-bone on the index finger of one hand.
I think it’s socioeconomic. People that can afford better nutrition and medical care have fewer children with birth defects and are also more prone to accept and care for children with defects. Less privileged people lose more children to malnourishment and lack of medical care, but also have a higher rate of birth defects for those reasons. Either way – both introduce more individuals with birth defects into society.
What happened to these poor creatures in older times is another story and another bizarre list for JF.
coming soon from MGM, freaks 2: the new breed!
Awesome list.
Sorry, in what way is this list any different to a Victorian freak show?
there is a little caption beneath each picture explaining the nature and the tragedy of the disease . also no concessions stand…
There are explanations as to what each birth defect is called and what it actually is. I learnt something knew today from this list and there is nothing wrong in learning about birth defects- in fact learning about them is SO much better than ignoring them completely!
Also I didn't read the list for amusement although maybe you did? But I felt for each of the people featured and I was humbled.
Instead of calling him "The Elephant Man", we interact with him as a human being and call his condition by the correct name.
This list leaves me thankful for the good health of my own 4 kids. Poor babies – thankfully these are rare but doesn't make it any easier for the people and families involved.
Where`s George W Bush?
These are 'bizarre' birth defects.
Arrogance and a low IQ are not too 'bizarre'. Neither is being handed everything to you and then you running it into the ground.
In Dallas, moron. Where's Obama–oh that's right, Jug-earred Megalomania wasn't one of the birth defects highlighted in the list.
Psychologists call it "Aggressive Narcissism Syndrome"
symptoms:
Glibness/superficial charm
Grandiose sense of self-worth
Pathological lying
Cunning/manipulative
Lack of remorse or guilt
Emotionally shallow
Callous/lack of empathy
Failure to accept responsibility for own actions
How could you not include harlequin ichthyosis
I mean yeah a picture of it will haunt your dreams for the rest of your life, but still. I'm actually stunned it wasn't in this list
yeah i just googled that, it bothered me physically. any idea why the eyes look like that?
theyre everted. (turned insideout — the eyelids are).
and the thick-ass skin pulls on the outside, stretching it, just as it does to the lips
the ectropion makes it extremely hard to fight off infection, and often there is a perpetual infection — slightly caused by (among several other things) severe permanent dehydration (the super thick, super scaley epidermis does not hold water well at all, and it is very common for sufferers to fall to dehydration.
the only other thing i know is that they damn near always bleed upon birth, —- i dont know why this is, but if i had to guess, i'd say something about the consistancy of the vitreous humour , the ectropion effect i mentioned above, and inherent sepsis.
Coming from a family of 12 healthy kids, this makes me realize how truly blessed my family has been.
Great list, Jamie.
Poor babies!
.
My daughter was born with fused teeth. It caused an extra one to grow when the baby tooth feel out. Since there isn't room for that extra tooth, the bottom teeth in the front are all sideways. I still have the fused teeth. It's still kinda weird to look at.
My sister was born with her soft spot closed. This was quite a long time ago so chances of living weren't that great with surgery. If they didn't do the surgery, she would end up looking like the elephant man. Needless to say, she's got a scar on her head now and doing just fine…..of course as her big sister it was my duty to tell her when we were younger that they removed her brain because she wasn't using it.
Awesome list!
A friend of mine had the closed soft-spot thing. She had to have surgery when she was like 2 days old. She doesn't have any visible scars, but there's lumpyness you can feel on her head!
Here is a recent picture of a baby born August 2010 its a shocker. http://www.facebook.com/

aid=46280&id=1122788030&l=e651dabf24
Sorry i made a mistake in the above link here it is made short http://tinyurl.com/3x5hwyk
:-O
This seems to be one of those times where I am too shocked to actually say anything about the list :-/
Number 6:
AHH! QUATO! QUATO!
i'll take the chick with three… uh… better not – people seem a little sensitive
It would be awesome to have a functional tail. Let you hang, Help keep your balance. Do bad things to women with it, etc.
More monkey-like… not dog, otherwise you couldn't play poker, since the wagging would give away your hand.
AND NO FLIPPER BABIES!!!
These babies are nothing to joke about. I bet you would feel differently if it were you or a family member. Free your mind, the rest will follow, don't be so blind or be so shallow.
What about Harlequin-type ichthyosis? Search ‘Harlequin baby’ on YouTube and tell me that shouldn’t be on this list!
Looking on wikipedia on a case of anencephaly, i found that case of a child, Baby k, who lived for 2-3 years, after her mother had continued the pregnancy in the knowledge that she had a child with such a condition and went against the doctors advice of 'do not resucsitate'-all due to her religious beliefs. I am not an overtly religious person and while it is acceptable for the mother to hold her beliefs, what quality of life was a child with such a condition to have? -Barely a brain and the minimal functions of breathing. Religious freedom and the sanctity of life-are, understandly is a grey area where science and religion overlap-but as someone with young siblings with disabilities,i do think it is hard to look from the outside and judge a situation.
Harlequin-type ichthyosis or Harlequin Fetus should be number 1!! Extremely disturbing and sad. I think it's actually so bad that a picture shouldn't be posted on here. But if the reader wants to see, they can google it. It's an image you will NEVER forget.
that is awfull because such things happens to kids
Sensible brock is way less fun than clueless brock.
i was thinking the same thing about armadillo earlier
yeah – but all three has bad speling and grahamer
I can't bring myself to read everything in detail, but I'll try again later this morning. I saw a show a few years back on a kid (who has since passed away) who was born with a very rare defect that caused his skin to fall off. He basically had to live making minimum physical contact with anything because his very fragile skin would break or peel at contact.
When they took his winter jacket off during the documentary it had to be done with such great care that it took an hour. So sad….
Me think some of the commentators are like nr 1: no brain. Especially the fools who always has to comment first with “First!”.
good list but Collodian Membrane Ichthyosis and Harlequin Ichthyosis.are definitely big big misses
I agree, I was expecting to see Harlequin-type Ichthyosis for sure. Tragically there are far too many to choose from I suppose.
Man, I just finished a stint in the lab sampling foetal autopsies, now this… Just for the heck of it I'm going to throw in Fraser Syndrome and Ectrodactyly.
Creepy list Jamie. Some glad I'm not pregnant – like pregnant women need any excuse to worry….
re: Cyclopia – that particular infant's deformity might have been caused by anti-cancer drugs but Cyclops babies predate any sort of cancer treatment.
For those of you interested in the giant sculpture dude – his name is Ron Mueck. He's damn awesome. Sometimes the pathos/emotion generated by art is proportional to its size. http://www.pictureorama.com/2006/11/giant-sculptu… http://www.pictureorama.com/2006/11/giant-sculptu…
This is just terrible! This is why I support abortion and stem cell research.
Can you seperate those two? What if I want to support stem cell reserach but not abortion?
I'm sorry that just because someone looks different than you they should have to die.
it has less to do about looking different and more to do about quality of life, don't you think?
Awesome list Jamies bizzare lists are always top shelf stuff – this one is very sad, it is amazing how many mothers still bring up their kids suffering from some sort of disability and love them as if they were normal.
I know people have been thumbing you up but I really don't know why. "Love their kids as if they are normal"!! Are you *****ing joking me??? The *****S that give this a thumbs up are obviously themselves in some way retarded if they think it takes a special kind of something to love a child with a disability.
Snickersman, if stem cell research can prevent the things in this list then I think a lot of people would change their minds and support it. Most of these lists are just entertainment, but this one is more.
Feels so lucky to be normal. I knew about half of these, but the images were heart wrenching. Now i cant bring myself to google the harlequin one :/
p.s. Loved the bonus :p very funny!
These days J Frater appears to be in a hurry, while composing his lists. The current list is no exception. The listed items have very little textual support. Particularly craniopagus parasiticus deserves more information like whether it is possible to remove the extra head surgically. Or some true cases of this condition should have been mentioned.
The vestigial tail has "muscles, nerves and blood vessels", but what about bones? Because all sub human tailed mammals have bony tails. Without bones, should these things be still called tails? Are the muscles voluntary?
its called google and wikipedia you want more info about anything on any list here start there.
I've heard of all of these before, poor people
Great list – very disturbing but this is what I like to see on listverse!
There was no place to park the tanker truck.
Here's the syringe – http://www.alamut.com/images/2001_misc/colossalSy…
Whatever that movie is I want to see it. Maybe attack of the 50 Foot Woman (just a guess)
hey blogball………
it's from 'the amazing colossal man'……i *think* it was released in the late 50's……..like '58 or '57 ——– i remember cathy downs being in it, but i cant remember any of the males.
It was The Amazing Colossal Man (Aug 1957) – which may have been sort of an anti-sequel to The Incredible Shrinking Man (Apr 1957), there was a sequel – War of the Colossal Beast.
i'm currently 8.5 months pregnant and was debating whether or not I should read the list. of course, my morbid curiousity won out. Ugh, i can't UNSEE these images! Thank god i've had multiple ultrasounds and my baby seems perfectly normal and healthy so far. Just might have her daddy's lips though. LOL
