10 Rare Hybrids with Wild Backstories

Hybrids are the offspring of two different species. A well-known example is the mule, which usually has a male donkey and a female horse as its parents. Today, there are millions of mules, and their existence isn’t a mystery; people breed them on purpose for their hardiness.

This list looks at the other side of the coin. We’ll throw the spotlight on hybrids so unusual you’ve probably never even heard of them. For example, only one verified Dogxim has been documented, after the animal was struck by a vehicle in Brazil. In Malaysia, there is a new carnivorous plant hybrid with a trap rim that glows vivid green under ultraviolet light, and nobody knows exactly why.

But it gets stranger. From a grave full of ancient human-bred hybrids to a man who went to prison for creating his own, here are ten of the strangest blends in the natural world, complete with their own wild backstories.

10 Borneo’s Mystery Monkey

In 2017, people started posting images of a young monkey on social media. The female was spotted near a river in Borneo, and while most netizens looked at the photographs and went, “Aww,” conservationists were concerned. Her existence may have signaled a serious problem in the local environment. The images suggested that she was a rare hybrid between two very different species: a proboscis monkey and the much smaller silvery langur.

Both species compete for the same territory, which keeps shrinking due to palm oil farming. Habitat fragmentation can also make it harder for animals to find mates of their own species. Researchers suspected that a male proboscis monkey may have bred with a female silvery langur in one of these mixed and crowded forest patches. The mystery monkey was later photographed with an infant, suggesting that she might even be fertile. But until DNA can confirm her parentage, she remains a possible hybrid and a warning sign that Borneo’s shrinking forests are forcing wildlife into strange new situations.[1]

9 The Grue Jay

The blue jay and green jay once had little opportunity to hybridize. The two bird species were separated by vast geographical ranges and seven million years of evolution. But during the 1970s, scientists successfully bred offspring from them, and this “grue jay” was a novelty believed to be possible only in captivity, where its parent species lived together.

Then, in 2023, a strange jay was photographed in a Texas backyard and posted online. Ecologist Brian Stokes later captured and banded the bird. A blood sample revealed that the male was a cross between a blue jay father and a green jay mother. His blue feathers, dark mask, and unusual calls were clues, but whole-genome sequencing confirmed the family tree.

The bird was confirmed as the first known wild hybrid between these two jays, and it may owe its existence partly to climate change and human-altered landscapes. Green jays live in the tropics and subtropics, ranging from Honduras to South Texas, while their blue cousins prefer eastern North America. As green jays move northward and blue jays expand westward, the two species now overlap around San Antonio, where this one-of-a-kind “grue jay” was captured and later released.[2]

8 The London Plane

City trees are notoriously short-lived. Due to pollution, compacted soil, poor nutrition, and root damage, many survive only a few decades. But one species, the London plane, is doing better than most. This tree is not rare, exactly. In fact, it is one of London’s most familiar urban trees. But its origin story remains wonderfully murky. We know it is a hybrid between an Oriental plane and an American sycamore, but how they interbred for the first time remains unknown.

The London plane is not a new phenomenon. It has been known since the seventeenth century, when its parent species lived on different continents. As global plant collecting brought foreign seeds and trees into European gardens, an Oriental plane and an American sycamore finally had a chance to meet. Some speculate that the first hybrid appeared in England, possibly around Oxford or London. Others think it may have originated in Spain or southern France, where warmer summers would have suited the American parent tree better.

Either way, the resulting hybrid was tall, beautiful, and tough. Very quickly, the City of London adopted these trees, hence the name. One feature makes them ideal for city living: they shed patches of outer bark, revealing lighter bark beneath, which helps them tolerate urban grime. But modern cities might still have the final say. London planes now face tighter growing spaces, root damage, heat stress, and fungal diseases such as Massaria, which can kill branches and cause limb drop.[3]

7 The World’s Rarest Elephant

African and Asian elephants live on different continents, so it’s no surprise that we do not see any hybrids from them. But one did exist. Guinness World Records calls him the “world’s rarest elephant,” and rightly so: no other confirmed African–Asian elephant hybrid has been recorded.

During the 1970s, a herd of elephants lived at Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom. The leader was a female Asian elephant called Sheba. When she fell pregnant, nobody doubted that Jumbolino, an African bush elephant, was the father. He was the only bull in the enclosure and had reportedly mated with the Asian females. It was still a surprise. The parents belonged to different species and different genera, and experts doubted whether their genetics were compatible enough for the pregnancy to be completed successfully.

Motty arrived on July 11, 1978. The calf had his father’s larger ears, longer legs, and more robust body and head shape. He also inherited his mother’s toenails: Asian elephants have four nails on the back feet and five on the front. But Motty was born six weeks too early, and for ten days, veterinarians fought to save his life. He died on July 21 from necrotizing enterocolitis and E. coli septicemia.[4]

6 Hybrid Termites Invade Florida

Some hybrids should never exist, simply because they are too dangerous or destructive. One such animal is the “super” termite. For context, let’s consider the havoc its parent species are already causing. Termites cause billions of dollars in damage and control costs worldwide every year, and nobody wants a hybrid from two of the world’s most invasive termite species: the Formosan subterranean termite and the Asian subterranean termite.

For a long time, the two pests could not meet. The Formosan subterranean termite hails from milder regions in Taiwan and China, while the Asian subterranean termite lives in tropical Southeast Asia. Human movement has now brought them together in places such as Hawaii, South Florida, and Taiwan.

In 2013, researchers witnessed something worrying in South Florida. The termites used to have different breeding seasons, but their seasonal mating flights began to overlap. That made hybridizing more likely. Sure enough, laboratory pairings produced fast-growing hybrid colonies, and researchers wondered whether the offspring could survive outside the lab. The answer is now yes. In 2025, University of Florida researchers confirmed that hybrid termite colonies have become established in South Florida, meaning the “super termite” is no longer just a nightmare scenario in a laboratory.[5]

5 A Glowing Carnivore

Tropical pitcher plants have a reputation for two things: they eat animals, and they hybridize easily. Recently, two species produced something unexpected: a pitcher plant hybrid whose trap rim glows vivid green under ultraviolet light. The fluorescent plant was found in Peninsular Malaysia. It was a cross between Nepenthes benstonei and Nepenthes rafflesiana.

This natural hybrid was special even by pitcher-plant standards. Researchers recorded only nine individuals in the wild, growing at elevations of about 2,300 to 3,000 feet (700 to 900 meters) in the Timur Range. The find also renewed interest in Malaysia’s overlooked pitcher plants, a group that has produced several recent discoveries.

When researchers happened across the N. benstonei × rafflesiana hybrid, it wasn’t just another odd-looking pitcher. A few pitcher species show fluorescence, but the lip of this hybrid’s trap, called the peristome, glowed an intense green. That had never been reported for the genus. Even better, the parent species did not show the same effect: one emitted blue fluorescence, while the other showed only sparse yellow-green streaks. The reason remains unknown, but researchers think the vivid glow could involve transgressive inheritance, pigments, metabolites, or even symbiotic microbes.[6]

4 The Dogxim

In 2021, a vehicle struck a dark, fox-like animal crossing a road in Brazil. Although she was seriously injured, the creature survived the collision. It recovered at an animal rehabilitation center in Rio Grande do Sul.

Her looks and behavior were baffling. The animal didn’t match the region’s known wild canids. Just like a dog, she barked and wasn’t as aggressive as a wild canid when people physically handled her. The creature’s eyes and fur also had darker, dog-like coloring. But this was no puppy. Her pointy ears and nose were distinctly “wild,” and she readily accepted live rodents as food.

Genetic tests found a few surprises. The creature was a hybrid between a male domestic dog and a female South American pampas fox. Strictly speaking, the pampas fox is not a true fox in the genus Vulpes, but the nickname “dogxim” stuck anyway. She also had seventy-six chromosomes, compared with seventy-four in a pampas fox and seventy-eight in a dog. Unfortunately, after her recovery, the ultra-rare animal died at a wildlife facility from unknown causes, and her death was not reported promptly, prompting an official investigation.[7]

3 The Marco Polo Hybrids

Arthur “Jack” Schubarth was a hunter who wanted to breed enormous sheep for captive hunting operations. Schubarth believed that if he could create a massive animal, hunting establishments would pay for the privilege of hunting it. But the way he went about it aggravated the authorities so much that in 2024, the eighty-one-year-old was jailed.

The rancher began by illegally importing parts from a Marco Polo argali sheep into the United States. The Marco Polo argali is a protected wild sheep native to the Pamir region of Central Asia. As one of the world’s largest wild sheep, the animal was ideal for Schubarth’s breeding program. A laboratory used genetic material from the illegally imported sheep parts to create cloned embryos, which were implanted in ewes on Schubarth’s ranch in Montana. One pure Marco Polo argali male was born. Schubarth named him Montana Mountain King and used him to sire enormous hybrid offspring.

Importing the original material broke the Lacey Act, which prohibits trade in wildlife obtained, possessed, transported, or sold in violation of applicable laws. Schubarth also forged veterinary certificates and moved sheep and semen across state lines as part of the scheme. He pleaded guilty to two felony wildlife crimes and received six months in prison.[8]

2 A Three-Species Hybrid

When Three Species Combine: Multi-Species Hybrids

Most birdwatchers hope to see a rare bird. In May 2018, Lowell Burket had his turn when he spotted an unknown bird in Pennsylvania. As an experienced birder, Burket recognized the physical traits of three different species. The male bird had coloring similar to both the blue-winged and golden-winged warbler, but he sang like a chestnut-sided warbler.

Burket photographed and recorded the bird, studied its markings and song, and contacted researchers through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Within a week, one of the lab’s researchers, David Toews, visited Burket. They captured the bird and collected a blood sample for genetic analysis. The tests confirmed Burket’s observations.

The bird’s mother was a Brewster’s warbler. This is not a separate species but a hybrid form produced by blue-winged and golden-winged warblers, first scientifically described in 1874. She then successfully mated with a chestnut-sided warbler male and produced a unique three-species son. While his hybrid mother was fertile, it remains to be seen if he can reproduce or whether female warblers will overlook his different appearance and choose him as a mate.[9]

1 The Kunga

History’s First Hybrid Animal: The Mighty Kunga

In the early 2000s, twenty-five horse-like skeletons were found at a 4,500-year-old royal burial complex at Tell Umm el-Marra in northern Syria, east of Aleppo. The animals didn’t match any known species. DNA tests eventually revealed that these animals were hybrids, born from female donkeys and male Syrian wild asses. The bones were recognized as the world’s oldest known human-made animal hybrids, but that wasn’t their ultimate claim to fame. Experts believe that they are the elusive kunga.

The kunga was once a prized animal in Syro-Mesopotamia. Ancient texts described them as donkey-like creatures used by the elite to pull chariots. They were also more expensive than normal donkeys, and highly sophisticated programs existed to breed kungas and care for them. Unfortunately, the ancients failed to mention which species were used to create this hybrid.

The location of the mass grave is a solid clue that the skeletons belonged to a kunga herd. As animals that were seen as status symbols, it’s also plausible that they were used as royal “grave goods” in this case. The condition of their teeth showed they wore mouth bits in life and were fed rather than left to graze like donkeys, supporting the texts describing them as chariot animals kept in stables. On a sad note: for anyone hoping to see a living kunga, that opportunity closed in 1929, when the wild Syrian ass went extinct.[10]
