Top 10 Most Annoying Sidekicks in Movies
Published on May 21, 2008 - 243 Comments
Every now and then, certain movie characters (and the actors that played them) come along and capture the heart and imagination of millions of viewers worldwide. Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker; Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa; Mel Gibson as William Wallace, along with many others, have changed everything we think about movie characters. These characters have been emotionally imprinted upon the Hollywood landscape, inspiring thousands of writers, directors, and actors to contribute to the entertainment industry with excitement, passion, and vigor. This list, however, has nothing to do with such impactful characters.
This list is about the characters that we all hate. Characters that bring nothing more than noise and distraction to the movie screen. Characters that try their best to drown out the performances of the other actors on screen, selfishly upstaging the film with their annoying banter and garrulous eccentricities. Characters that, when they appear on the screen, make you want to stuff Sour Patch Kids into your eyes and ears.
Just a side note: These are mostly sidekicks from action/adventure movies, with a couple of exceptions. I could easily make a list of 100 annoying characters from comedies or dramas, but comedy is usually something of a subjective market. So I decided to pick annoying sidekicks from seemingly serious and epic movies, because they just drain the life right out of the scene when they appear. Enjoy.
I included Bubba on this list for only a couple of reasons. I recognize that Bubba from Forrest Gump is a pretty popular character from a very popular movie. But I feel that his speech impediment, his uninspiring speeches, and his lead in the endless “shrimp” scene, warranted his inclusion in a list of annoying movie characters. Most of the scenes involving Bubba are usually dominated by Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump character anyway, leaving the viewer wondering why we really needed another slow, confused, southerner with a speech impediment.
Another very popular character and a wonderful sidekick to Han Solo, but I decided to include him on the list simply because of the noise. Noise, noise, noise. Every scene involving Chewbacca is like trying to watch a movie that has been put through a wood chipper. Most of the Star Wars series is shot with great sound quality, due to Lucas’ genius work starting up the THX franchise. But even in quiet scenes aboard the Millennium Falcon while the cast is deep in hyperspace, Chewie’s “Nyraghgg nyaghhh nanyyyyyy” slices into the audio with reckless abandon, clogging up an otherwise peaceful scene.
No matter what you think about the Lord of the Rings franchise, you can’t argue that most scenes involving Gollum require a certain amount of intestinal fortitude. He is ugly. He is repulsive. He repeats the same phrases over and over again. He eats raw fish. Most scenes that involve Gollum make you wish you were back in the Shire.
Of all the characters on this list, Jeff Goldblum’s portrayal of pseudo-sidekick David Levinson in Independence Day is the least obvious. In a way, Levinson is sort of a sneaky annoyance. While Will Smith is busy fighting aliens and saving the world from annihilation, Levinson is trying to figure out how to get back together with his wife. While Bill Pulman is busy organizing the countries of the world, uniting them in liberty and leadership, Levinson is worrying about science and trying to deal with his grumpy ole dad. Then by the end somehow he finds himself on a secret mission to blow up the mothership, and as they are flying through space, I swear you can see a look on his face that says “Did I leave the oven on?” Plus, his “drunk” scene is absolutely not believable. He downs a liter of Vodka in a fit of depression one minute, then in the next minute he is discussing physics with the U.S. Department of Defense. Please, just get off the screen and let Will Smith kick some ass.
The only thing more annoying than Stifler himself is an impersonation of Stifler, which is something that occurred in frat houses nationwide soon after American Pie was released. I am not trying to say that American Pie is a good movie (trust me, it isn’t), but did we really need a cocky mama’s boy to fluff up the scenes and make them even funnier? I actually enjoyed most scenes that involve Eugene Levy, but then inevitably Stifler would appear and force me to remember that I was watching a terrible teenage comedy about sex. Not really a sidekick, but annoying nonetheless.
This duo takes a position in this list because they simply bring nothing to the table and serve as a good reminder that big movie studios think you (the audience) are stupid. What’s not to like about two goofy pirates, especially when one of them keeps losing an eyeball? Everything. They are not funny and they always interrupt any scene involving Johnny Depp, who brings enough comedy to this adventure movie.
Any movie tends to lose a little bit of watch-ability when there is one single character who does nothing but scream the entire movie. Yes, the entire movie. She is screaming, complaining, whining, crying, and yelling for the whole flippin’ movie, and the whole time she thinks that she is a beautiful singer and the object of Indiana’s affection. Most scenes involving Willie Scott and Indiana Jones are somewhat uncomfortable, because you are just waiting for her to start screaming again. She is a horrible sidekick too, because she simply has no interest in participating in the adventure. I have seen this movie several times and I have yet to figure out why she is even there.
If you’ve seen this movie, you know exactly why he (or she?) is on this list. This androgynous brand of annoyance brings new meaning to the term; loud voice, whiny tone, horrible costume, persistent commentary, and amazing ability to make everyone in the audience wish they had stayed at home. A complete distraction in what is at least a decent movie. The only other person capable of truly bringing this character to life would have been Gilbert Gottfried, but I think Chris Tucker did a pretty good job.
Any character that can actually make me wish to see MORE of Nicholas Cage deserves to be included in a list of annoying movie sidekicks. Enter Riley Poole, fledgling sidekick to Nicholas Cage’s character Ben Gates. The worst part about Mr. Poole? The lines. Yes, yes, I know, it’s a Disney movie. But these one-liners are horrible. I remember actually wanting Nicholas Cage to start talking, just so I could get a break from Poole’s incessant humor. I think the idea behind Riley Poole is to make the audience constantly think, “Oh that Riley, he just can’t do ANYTHING right, can he?” which is O.K. if we are watching a Tom and Jerry cartoon. But for a full-length, 90 minute action/adventure movie? It is downright criminal.
I mean, is there really any other option? In the most anticipated prequel of the 90’s (and arguably, of all time) the character of Jar Jar Binks took center stage in the Star Wars universe and proceeded to halt all the momentum George Lucas had created in the late 1970s. With his computer generated baby mumbling, awkward human-alien interactions, and helpless efforts to help the Jedi, Jar Jar made audiences worldwide stare aghast at the screen at probably the most disastrous “comic relief” sidekick in film history. In defense of Jar Jar, George Lucas has said “…there is a small group of fans that do not like comic sidekicks. They want the films to be tough like The Terminator, and they get very upset and opinionated about anything that has anything to do with being childlike,” clearly showing his intention of making the Jar Jar Binks character purely kid friendly and nonsensical. Honestly, George, I would have rather seen Elmo or Big Bird tagging along with the Jedi. Jar Jar Binks was a walking catastrophe.

I dont think Bubba was too bad. I liked his whole situation in the movie, especially how when he passed Forrest gives his mom all that money. I really agree with Chris Tuckers character and Stifler though.
2. Christine - May 21st, 2008 at 9:45 am
OH MY GOD, THANK YOU for including Jar Jar Binks. He was annoying as all hell!
Golum was annoying but he was sort of important to the plot of LOTR. I didn’t mind the other characters so much but this was a funny list. Thanks for making me laugh =).
3. Quiana - May 21st, 2008 at 9:46 am
I know I might get shot for this but i have never seen star wars, but now I know which characters to plug my ears for!!
4. Christine - May 21st, 2008 at 9:46 am
Oh yeah, that voice of Chris Tucker is just plain annoying too.
5. flgh - May 21st, 2008 at 9:48 am
Com’on, cut Chewie some slack; his “nyaghhh”s are legit funny comic relief
But I agree with Ruby Rhod & Jar Jar Binks
6. Cathysferret - May 21st, 2008 at 9:55 am
Jar Jar… yes. Gollum… NO! He is cute in the ugliest of ways… he is such a tortured soul you can’t help but feel sorry for him (more in the second movie than the last)
Willie Scott is annoying in the Temple of Doom but Indy has to have a woman as a sidekick… this one was just very girly!
7. Chris - May 21st, 2008 at 10:02 am
Good list, but unlike some of the other characters on this list, Gollum was incredibly important to the story.
8. Philmont237 - May 21st, 2008 at 10:05 am
Stewie Griffin said it best in Family Guy regarding Willie Scott, “Lady only here cause she humping director.”
9. TH Jack - May 21st, 2008 at 10:14 am
Wow, this list sucks. There are so many more annoying sidekicks in movies that deserve the title more then at least 7 on this list. Those 7 might me annoying to the other characters in their movies but no the audience. Jar-Jar wasd annoying to both, but I mean you picked Chewbacca over C3P0? I’d rather have a Wookie’s animal grunts then listing to a whinny driod bitching all the time.
10. Quiana - May 21st, 2008 at 10:19 am
Philmont273 Lol, you are so right. I think Ive seen that episode 100.
11. Anthony - May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 am
Jamie you filthy liar! I knew it!
Great list, I love the inclusion of Ruby Rhod. Both the best and worst part of that movie.
12. trigster - May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 am
Oh God, Willie Scott. I absolutely despised this character. I much prefer the nazi girl from the last crusade. She’s more attractive and a badass. I love those type of women ;).
I agree christine’s comment about Golum regarding his importance. I can see how he is looked at as annoying, but I think what makes him annoying is also what makes him essential to the series. I suppose he’s right where he should be on the list anyhow.
Great list
13. Kreachure - May 21st, 2008 at 10:26 am
I agree with C3PO over Chewbacca. I mean, if you felt the urge to include another character from Star Wars besides Jar Jar, then it would’ve been best to go with what some consider to be the classic trilogy’s Jar Jar (not that I would; I like the peculiar role C3PO played along R2D2 and with other characters as well).
14. toolnut - May 21st, 2008 at 10:28 am
ok, I might get attacked for this but I actually like Ruby Rhod. I thought his character was completely necessary. His scenes are some of the best from that movie. IMO, he’s not annoying at all.
15. Ghostship - May 21st, 2008 at 10:29 am
Yeah, I think c-3p0 is more appropriate than Chewie…
But Personally, I think some of the best laughs in The Fifth Element are from Ruby Rhod, yeah, he’s annoying, but he’s at least supposed to be annoying; unlike Jar Jar or others on the list.
16. Kreachure - May 21st, 2008 at 10:30 am
Also, I think Ruby Rhod was supposed to be intentionally annoying and over the top, and that’s why I sort of enjoyed watching him in that movie.
I’m guessing no other character in this list was supposed to be annoying on purpose…
17. tattooedgirly - May 21st, 2008 at 10:32 am
I think Willie from the Indiana Jones movie is meant to be annoying, that is the part she plays in the movie. I just watched that movie the other day and I really liked her, she reminds me of myself lol.
18. Mom424 - May 21st, 2008 at 10:34 am
Robin from Batman and Robin, tops ‘em all.
19. Kreachure - May 21st, 2008 at 10:36 am
LOL, I put my comment up before I saw toolnut’s and Ghostship’s!
Three Ruby Rhod supporting comments in a row? I think we can start a Ruby Rhod fan club now!
20. WarningDontReadThis - May 21st, 2008 at 10:37 am
You’re right about 10,8,6 and 1 but 5?! No way.. D :
I hope the creators of the American Pie series die a slow and painful death.
Anyone willing to help me kill them :D?
21. dangorironhide - May 21st, 2008 at 10:42 am
WHAT???? You’re including Stifler on this list? WTF man? He was one of the funniest characters in that film! Well whatever, I loved American Pie (1 AND 2), & Stifler made those films jump the gap from good to great.
The rest of them I agree with, especially Jar Jar.
22. Kreachure - May 21st, 2008 at 10:43 am
Mom424: Do you mean Robin from Batman and Robin the movie, or Robin altogether since forever and always?
(I’d agree with the latter!)
23. Kreachure - May 21st, 2008 at 10:46 am
dangorironhide: I think you’re spending too much time at the Frat house!
24. G Fresh - May 21st, 2008 at 10:52 am
How about Leo Getz from the Lethal Weapon movies? I thought for sure he’d be on here. Actually, Joe Pesci in pretty much any movie he’s been in would probably qualify…
25. island boggs - May 21st, 2008 at 10:58 am
jar jar is perfect, however, seven thumbs down on bubba and chewbacca. i am thouroughly ashamed.
26. Mac - May 21st, 2008 at 10:58 am
Jeff Goldblum is too wonderful to be included here, or spoken of in any negative way. He’s Jeff Goldblum. It lifts my heart when he’s onscreen, always. I can’t wait til he starts touring with the Jeff Goldbluman Group.
27. T - May 21st, 2008 at 11:08 am
Not too impressed. Most of them aren’t really sidekicks, they’re secondary characters, love intrests, comic relief… The only one I would agree that is annoying and a sidekick is #2.
28. gcat - May 21st, 2008 at 11:12 am
The much more obvious choice for the Indiana Jones sidekick would be the annoying and blatantly racial stereotyped Asian kid. As for the LOTR, I would go with Gimili… his comic relief was completely unnecessary and made me slightly embarrassed to be watching the movie. I disagree with the rest of the list too (with the exception of jar jar). What about the Ewoks or C3PO?!
29. Metalwrath - May 21st, 2008 at 11:16 am
Many here I don’t really agree with but it was an interesting and funny list to read anyway.
I don’t agree, not in the sense that I believe these characters are essential (I do for Gollum though and I actually prefered the scenes with him than those without him), but because many of them I never even thought they were remotely annoying.
30. Z-Rex - May 21st, 2008 at 11:19 am
Interesting list. I’d have to humbly disagree with Bubba- if only for the bond that he & Forrest shared. The scene where Forrest runs back to rescue him and gets shot, and Bubba passes thereafter is one of the best in the movie, IMHO. (My apologies to the 8 people who have yet to see F.G. and that spoiled it for you.)
Some of the other choices I never really thought of as annoying, like the guys from Pirates. They didn’t seem to have big enough parts to even be annoying.
Is it possible to add a lead character to this list? If so, I’d add Hayden Christiansen (sp?) of Episode III- if for no other reason than the scene where he tells Natalie Portman, “Your skin is soft. Not like the sand, which is rough.” That might not be the exact line, but it ain’t far off. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I saw that for the first time. I probably laughed. If I were George Lucas, I’d seriously consider severing my writing hand to avoid penning such drivel in the future.
31. Randy - May 21st, 2008 at 11:21 am
I have to disagree with most of this list (except, of course, #1) I didn’t find that any of these (except the afore mentioned #1) were all that annoying. Great opinion list, though.
32. gromit - May 21st, 2008 at 11:24 am
you know, this is a great list, and very agreeable as well, however one thing sticks out, and that is that 80% of these movies are some of the best movies of all time (independence day, the fifth element.. etc.) and one must wonder, would the movies be that memorable without these characters, some yes, (cough Jar Jar Binks cough) but most of these movies best moments involved these characters and wouldn’t be the sam without them.
awesome list again
33. carpe_noctem - May 21st, 2008 at 11:29 am
Great list. It’s completely original, so that’s always a bonus too!
I think a lot of you are mistaking annoying with hatable. A lot of the descriptions are obviously exaggerations, and even though I loved Ruby Rhod, you can’t disagree that the entire point of his character’s existence was to be annoying.
Definitely agree with number 1!
34. Mom424 - May 21st, 2008 at 11:30 am
Kreachure; Robin in general; superfluous, annoying, and gay. Who needs homo-erotic undertones in Batman fer gawd sakes? Even gay folks snicker at the Robin/Batman relationship.
35. JayArr - May 21st, 2008 at 11:34 am
BooYah!!! JarrJarr Binks STINKS! While you missed the mark on several of the others, you hit this bad boy out of the park for accuracy… I almost stopped watching that movie BECAUSE of JJB….weesa-ugh…weesa-gag…
36. WarningDontReadThis - May 21st, 2008 at 11:35 am
mom424: Hope you’re not listning gay as a negative
37. PhineusQButterfat - May 21st, 2008 at 11:37 am
Amazingly, I disagree with every choice except Jar Jar Binks.
38. Harsha - May 21st, 2008 at 11:37 am
I agree this list is crap. So many who deserve to be here aren’t here. And many of these don’t deserve to be here. Stifler makes an crappy movie like American Pie slightly interesting. Same with Riley Poole in national treasure.
39. Quiana - May 21st, 2008 at 11:43 am
LOL, JayArr you had me at BooYah!!
40. JayArr - May 21st, 2008 at 11:45 am
I agree with TH Jack on C-3PO… annoying to say the least. Much more so than Chewie ever could have been.
41. Mom424 - May 21st, 2008 at 11:53 am
WarningDontReadThis; Only in Batman.
42. DiscHuker - May 21st, 2008 at 11:54 am
this list has no merit other than for alex to spout his nonsense.
bubba, chewie and gollum? you reveal your bias.
just go ahead and say you don’t like blacks, wookies or old disfigured hobbits.
43. MzFly - May 21st, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Good List - nice coice fo subject and I do agree with most of selections. But, I have to agree with those that support #3 Ruby Rhod, as the character is obviously meant to be annoying and over-the-top. Stifler is a steadily annoying character but in the 1st film his presence is really needed to make some of those gags fly.
44. smerkis - May 21st, 2008 at 12:07 pm
cept for jarr jarr and willie, this list is dumb. The rest of those characters were essential to those movies, though annoying at times, their part provided something to the movie. An important something. I cant imagine LOTR with out gollum, Star Wars without chewie, and American Pie wouldnt be American Pie with out the Stiffler
45. jfrater - May 21st, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Wow - I certainly didn’t expect this list to cause so much controversy! Maybe I should hold back on my “Top 10 reasons Star Wars sucks”! just kidding
46. beauty_chaotic - May 21st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
I don’t agree at all with the addition of Riley! Riley is SUCH a refreshing character in an action/adventure movie. He made that movie worth watching and his humor is kick-ass; c’mon!
47. Blogball - May 21st, 2008 at 12:11 pm
I like the fact that you had no fear in taking on some very popular characters and you explained your reasons in a very entertaining way & with confidence.
Good job on this original list alextenn!
48. MzFly - May 21st, 2008 at 12:18 pm
*choice *of
49. Shane S - May 21st, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Rob Schneider as a sidekick/cameo in any movie could be a list in itself.
50. WarningDontReadThis - May 21st, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Mom424: I always thought batman was sorta gay anyway.
51. Bob - May 21st, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Good list, though I anticipated Short Stack from Temple of Doom being on it. That dame wasn’t half so annoying as that stupid little kid.
52. Kelsi - May 21st, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I am not happy with this list.
Gollum? Chewy? JarJar? BUBBA?! All excellent characters. Even Stiffler made the AP movies more enjoyable. Thumbs down for this one.
53. Noodle The Cat - May 21st, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I’m sorry but this list makes me not want to continue coming to this site. It is terrible. Only a couple I agree with.
I understand it is all about opinion, but shouldn’t the list be considered reasonable by the universal court of man?
I have not had a problem with Jamie’s lists but some of the “and the rests” have not been so good.
54. Lori - May 21st, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Bob said,”Good list, though I anticipated Short Stack from Temple of Doom being on it.”
I think you meant “Short Round”. Nice list. I didn’t agree with Bubba, David or Riley, but I can understand the rest, even though many were essential to the plots.
55. Cedestra - May 21st, 2008 at 12:55 pm
I would fight the semantics on 1 and 3- I don’t think Ruby or Jar-Jar were sidekicks, per se: more just remarkable characters. But they both were annoying, yes indeed.
What a polarizing list! You’d think we were talking about Bush or Christianity. Oh dear, what have I gone and done?!?
Nice list. I actually like the bumbling Pirates; then again, I was pretty satisfied with the whole movie franchise, so they wouldn’t have disrupted my love anyways.
56. EricB - May 21st, 2008 at 1:07 pm
great list! one of my favorites as i have seen most of the movies on there. (that always helps, lol)
We all knew that Jar-Jar had to be #1, i knew it as soon as i saw the title of the list.
But Gollum I didn’t mind enough to think he should be on here. And Chewy? well….hes part of a classic. sure his noise is annoying but i think its part of the Star Wars mystique. It wouldn’t be quite the same without it…
57. tassadar - May 21st, 2008 at 1:09 pm
What about the chick that played Melissa, Paxton’s wife in Twister? She was the party pooper, when everyone was screaming with joy she was screaming in agony!
Or Edward Furlong in terminator 2? A little kid giving orders to Arnie, come on now!
58. Csimmons - May 21st, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I liked bubba, but all the rest were annoying as hell!
59. ylekiot - May 21st, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Noodle The Cat - I have to disagree with you I have never seen a truly bad list here. There are some that I seam a bit misguided, but they still have there value. If nothing else they give us a chance to give our opinion, regardless of there value. If you don’t return you won’t be missed. Great list totally off, with the exception of #1.
60. Becca - May 21st, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Really? Chewbacca? Can anyone imagine Star Wars without him?
Hmm…I didn’t find Gollum annoying either, but then again I was so excited to see those movies I might be biased on that:P
Everyone else I agree with though, especially Jar Jar. Gah.
61. Mining - May 21st, 2008 at 1:33 pm
How could you put Stifler up there? I loved the first few American Pie movies, but the newer ones completely blow ass.
I agree with Jar Jar though.
62. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 1:33 pm
stifler was great, the two characters that were annoying were stifler’s little brother and jim’s dad
tassadar:arnie was sent to the past to serve and protect the kid but his girlish voice was annoying.
63. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Arnie not arrie, my bad
64. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 1:37 pm
the new american pies are just trying to bank off the success of the first three
65. Wolfgang - May 21st, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Batman gay… no way Robin…Liberace gay Riley Poole.. I wish.
66. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 1:48 pm
every time i try to log in it says i do not have sufficient permission to access this page what gives
also if you click on MPW by the top commenters area it says something about an error
67. blaze fielding - May 21st, 2008 at 1:50 pm
stifler?! but stifler is great! american pie movies are amazing, even the ones after the wedding werent too bad.
I think if this list wasnt narrowed down to movies, we could deff. include scrappy doo. :]
68. jfrater - May 21st, 2008 at 1:55 pm
blaze fielding: wow! I thought I was the only person alive who hated scrappy doo - he totally ruined that show!
69. spence425 - May 21st, 2008 at 1:56 pm
-disagree with bubba
-disagree with chewbacca
-gollum wasn’t a sidekick to anyone
-i like Riley Poole…though on this one, i can understand your thoughts.
70. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 1:57 pm
i hate scrappy doo
71. Kurupt - May 21st, 2008 at 1:58 pm
that would have to be the worst list i have seen on this site
I did not agree with any o the characters on the list
And Gollum HAD to be in LOTR annoying or not ( i think not ) he was a big part of the story
72. Noodle The Cat - May 21st, 2008 at 1:59 pm
ylekiot - Not coming here to be noticed, (so it does not matter to me if I am missed) coming here to be entertained, informed and reminded of things I forgot.
And if this is a chance to offer our opinion, I gave mine, and got a rude reply from you.
73. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 1:59 pm
jfrater: did you read post 66
74. R - May 21st, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Meh… some of the people on the list were atually quite important to the final outcomes to their movies. (Forrest’s shrimping business, for example)
Riley was good for comic relief, which a majority of movies overuse, however in most, a small amount is necessary.
75. Kurupt - May 21st, 2008 at 2:00 pm
also Stifler was great in the first movie and was so popular that he had to be in the rest but he was not the reason for the decline in movie quality as the series got longer
76. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 2:01 pm
noodle the cat: you would be missed:)
77. spence425 - May 21st, 2008 at 2:03 pm
haha….scrappy doo.
now that is a legitimate sidekick. and an annoying sidekick. he should be on this list.
78. jfrater - May 21st, 2008 at 2:04 pm
MPW: Thanks for pointing that out - I didn’t notice your comment. There is obviously a bug there in my profiles code - I will fix it as soon as I get to New Zealand - 2 days away. Sorry for the annoyance.
79. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 2:04 pm
every scene stifler was in was meant for his charcter to deliver the punchline(well, almost every scene)
80. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 2:05 pm
jfrater: thanks a billion
81. jfrater - May 21st, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Scrappy ruined everything - he basically single-handedly ruined the Scooby Do show.
82. jfrater - May 21st, 2008 at 2:06 pm
MPW: you are welcome - and boy do you reply fast!

Jfrater, MPW: I didn’t really mind scrappy in the cartoons but that awful movie they made. God I wanted to rip my eyes out after seeing it.
Why the hell did Rowan Atkinson do it`?
84. Diamond_Dragon - May 21st, 2008 at 2:23 pm
So you guys really dont wanna start a shrimp business with me?
Yousa hurta me feelingsa
85. jfrater - May 21st, 2008 at 2:23 pm
WarningDontReadThis: I have managed to avoid the movie so far - I had no idea Rowan Atkinson was in it - very weird.
86. DRay - May 21st, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Completely disagree on 9, 8, and 5. Even disregarding my personal opinions on those, not a quality list. I think a second one or this one redone would be very nice though. You can’t win ‘em all.
87. Bob - May 21st, 2008 at 2:24 pm
“Bob said,”Good list, though I anticipated Short Stack from Temple of Doom being on it.”
I think you meant “Short Round”.”
Ah yes, that’s the kid. Thanks!
88. Barky - May 21st, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Pirates of the Caribbean is horrible. Yes, all of them.
89. YogiBarrister - May 21st, 2008 at 2:37 pm
I just watched NATIONAL TREASURE 2 last night and was thinking exactly the same thing about Riley. I wasn’t annoyed so much by the actor, but rather by the screenwriters. The character is one big cliche.
90. jayhawk - May 21st, 2008 at 2:37 pm
I think this list is really funny. Of course there is no merit, it is opinion. I don’t think it deserves to be torn apart because you don’t agree. I personally have no love for many of these characters (save chewie & Gollum). If you are heart broken to see your favorite characters in cinema like the d-bag from National Treasure up there give some new ideas. Lets see.. how about the blond chick with glasses from the Goonies, although not a sidekick very annoying (but strangely attractive?? no). Winston from Ghostbusters perhaps…great movie but that guy had the personality of a dead moth. I liked Yanosh more in the second film.
91. copperdragon - May 21st, 2008 at 3:01 pm
i’d like to nominate John Cleese as the new “Q” (R?) in the last couple Pierce Brosnan James Bond movies.
His interactions with Bond are so irritating.
The old “Q” (Desmond Llewellan(sp?) (RIP)) did his share of needling Bond, but not in an annoying way.
The fact that “R” only lasted a couple of movies kinda proves my point.
92. goof_ball - May 21st, 2008 at 3:22 pm
haha i like this list =D
93. alextenn - May 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Thanks jayhawk. After reading these comments, I was beginning to think that people thought I was a beat writer for a major newspaper. It is just opinion. I was creating a list of 10 annoying sidekicks from Movies (not TV) and these are the ones I came up with. Don’t agree? Come up with other options that are more annoying than the ones I have here. (I think you will find there are not a LOT of options to choose from… filling in the 8,9,10 spots required some extra thought.)
94. Anderi - May 21st, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Whoa! Whoaaaaaaa!
You DARE have Chewbacca on here??
Ok, that’s your opinion…
I don’t agree and so I have taken your advice and decided to add my glaring omission from your list:
That freaking WAYANS dufus from the Dungeons and Dragons movie!
With the exception of “I’m Gonna Get You Sucker”, ANY movie with a Wayans in it is straight to DVD!…
I mean, he’s a medieval street punk in a fantasy world!! PUH-leeze!
95. WarningDontReadThis - May 21st, 2008 at 4:09 pm
jfrater: You’re lucky. I loved scooby doo when I was a kid and argued that the movie must be brilliant. I was so wrong. It sucked beyond words. I can never unsee what I’ve seen.
And yes he was, I bet he regrets it.
96. Anderi - May 21st, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Sorry if this is a repeat but my comments aren’t showing up…
Glaring error: Chewbacca.
Glaring omission: the youngest Wayans doufus in Dungeons & Dragons the movie.
He was like a medieval Chris Tucker!!
97. Clantargh - May 21st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Can I suggest as a new list Top 10 ways people have shown their hatred for Jar Jar?
98. littlegraysheep - May 21st, 2008 at 5:01 pm
yea, i would agree with seignor caps up there, would agree on jarjar, annoying as hell, but the others are great because they explain the hero and the world around him [and honestly when u read the book and see gollum on the screen u can’t be nothing but amased as how good he is transfered.
Yeah would agree with the guy from independance day, including all the other characters, plot, dialog, score….Nice CGI tho :))
99. littlegraysheep - May 21st, 2008 at 5:03 pm
sorry for lotsa mistakes, can’t b bothered to check, and sorta feelt u wouldn’t read it anyway :))
100. Anderi - May 21st, 2008 at 5:08 pm
@Clantargh: TOTALLY AWESOME IDEA!! Now, get to work!…:p
@ajr: …ajr… jar… Jar jar??? I didn’t realise he could read english from far in the future, in a galaxy far, far away… From him…
101. Dan - May 21st, 2008 at 5:21 pm
interesting list, i especially agree with number 1. i think everyone must have thought of him before actually seeing him on the list.
102. Ryan - May 21st, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Wow this list kind of sucks. Half these movies would have been horrible without the sidekicks. I do agree with #1 tho haha.
103. NN - May 21st, 2008 at 5:46 pm
On target with #3 and #1. Any Gilbert Gottfried role is kinda annoying too(but strangely funny).
104. JwJwBean - May 21st, 2008 at 5:48 pm
I didn’t agree with Alextenn’s opinion on all of his choices, but I don’t think that means this list sucks. I think with the internet some of us forget that there are real people with real feelings on the other side of the screen. Nice job on getting a list together. And even though I didn’t agree at least you gave your own valid and funny reasons for not liking a character.
105. bt - May 21st, 2008 at 6:04 pm
Worst list ever
106. Lela - May 21st, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Ruby Rohd yes! Gollum not so much. I think his character was very ideal for the situation. If anything he was a villain instead of a sidekick!
107. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 6:22 pm
bt: you sound lie comic book guy:)
108. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 6:22 pm
like not lie
109. rocknopera - May 21st, 2008 at 6:27 pm
You could have done better than that
110. Csimmons - May 21st, 2008 at 6:58 pm
please don’t tell me people have signed up to bash the site, I would hate to see this turn into ebaumsworld where everyone says “gay” or “sux” about a list, and MPW, are you spamming to get top commenter?
111. MPW - May 21st, 2008 at 7:09 pm
spamming: what is that
112. tron - May 21st, 2008 at 7:21 pm
wow. this a terrible list. many of the choices are huge parts of the movie. you chose a racially induced number of black people for this list. this site is littered with subliminal racism. i hate it. bunch of racist close minded idiots who can’t handle that people who are different are better than them. screw you listverse!
113. QDV - May 21st, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Yeah, I’m another Short Round hater. He reminded of another annoying sidekick, played by Ernie Reyes in “Red Sonja.” The one that has made me wince the most, though, was Tracey Walter’s “Malak” in “Conan the Destroyer.” “Let’s flee” still busts me up.
114. Cyn - May 21st, 2008 at 7:32 pm
tron-
that’ll be $50 for the screw. we do accept credit cards.
but seriously…if you don’t like it here. don’t bother commenting. or are you one of those types of people who when having a crappy time at a party ruins it for the rest of the guests? hhmm…?
115. Lela - May 21st, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Tron:
Wow! 2 out of 10 are black. Let’s see that percentage would be twenty. To have it be “subliminal racism” and a “number of black people” would have to be over 50%!
Just for your knowledge.
116. Csimmons - May 21st, 2008 at 7:40 pm
half the list?!?!?!?! ONLY TWP ARE BLACK!!!!! Racist my ass!
117. Rocketiza - May 21st, 2008 at 7:41 pm
this is easily the worst list ever posted on this site. It shows none of the thought that is usually put into what is posted.
Sidekick is not the right word to describe even half of the characters selected. Character, supporting character, minor character whatever, but calling the two pirates a sidekick? To who? Sidekick implies a connection and deep relationship with a main character as someone who is constantly helping them out.
His definition of annoying is characters we all hate, but on most of the descriptions he has to caveat his selection with I know this character is popular but…
The author admitted they had a hard time thinking of the top characters of the list.
and that’s all i could type before my microwaved hotdogs were ready.
118. Flock O’Seagulls - May 21st, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Agree with the inclusion of Willie (and the suggestion that Short Round be included also) from Temple of Doom. A cute kid with a dumb name, speaking pidgeon English just didn’t work. The overwrought diva didn’t either. More Karen Allen was needed.
Also, I disagree with the inclusion of Bubba Blue.
119. Csimmons - May 21st, 2008 at 7:45 pm
I will say Jamie, this is probably the worst list ever posted on this site, I love every other list on this site, but this one is just awful. But don’t get me wrong, I am not bashing the site, just this list.
120. davo - May 21st, 2008 at 7:49 pm
reads like an old guy wrote this list
121. nelia - May 21st, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Never seen Forrest Gump, I must confess… but otherwise, I’ve seen them all, and I have never disagreed with a list more than this one. Chewbacca over C3PO? Gollum… ok, annoying, but what is the story without him? I really liked David from Independence Day. Stifler I enjoy, though I can understand how some might not. Our goofy pirates from Pirates were hilarious, especially in the first one. Willie is, fair enough, totally annoying. But then, that whole movie was bad. Ruby Rhod is, amazingly, a great character. Considering the voice and the shrieking? Still very funny and a great foil for Willis. I loved his womanizing, despite what his outfits might imply. Riley was the only redeeming part of National Treasure.
But congrats on number 1, Jar Jar is beyond the most annoying and pointless character in any movie ever. So… 2 out of 10.
122. nerdlette - May 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I think you kind of have to be female to understand the charm of Riley Poole. He’s cute. Nic Cage…not so much.
123. nelia - May 21st, 2008 at 8:08 pm
haha, that could very well be true nerdlette.
124. leinad - May 21st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
dude. ruby was great!!!!!! wtf?!!? it was a great character: fun, original, and portrayed in an awesome way by tucker. i disagree on this one so much, although i can understand fully at the same time why you put him there. but dude, it was a great movie and a great performance in my opinion.
125. Cyn - May 21st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
List Contributor: alextenn
alextenn has spoken in his/her own defense once already…and hopefully will come back again to combat the naysayers. i’d recommend not bashing J, the site or this list but come up w/ what you would consider as better alternatives. bashing the list contributor personally or J or the site is not helpful for anyone.
as for comments directed to the site…if this list is not your cuppa tea, there is an archive full of 100’s more to check out. also…you can submit your own list for consideration. which i would strongly recommend that you try. only then will you know how difficult it is to not only submit a list but to endure the sometimes grossly overstated criticisms.
its just a list folks. ease up!
and as always…show some respect for the other folks visiting the site. play nice. keep in mind how you present yourself too.
126. Lizzie - May 21st, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I have to admit, when I saw the title, I immediately expected to see that little twerp Leo Getz on here somewhere, preferrably at No. 1!!!. I thought he was a given. But Chewwie? Sacrilege!!
Actually, I don’t agree with quite a few of the choices, but that’s my opinion. It was a well presented, entertaining, and as it turns out, controversial list. And don’t we love those here at LV.
Jamie: Top 10 Reasons why Star Wars Sucks? I’d love to see the fallout from that one.
127. MiSaNtHROpE - May 21st, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Instead of citing one Chris Tucker character, you should have written “Chris Tucker.” Every movie of the four that I know of with Chris Tucker in it (Rush Hour 1-3; The 5th Element) sucked donkey balls with a facial, and it was always his fault. Eddie Murphy in I Spy also is deserving of this piteous list.
128. anthony p - May 21st, 2008 at 8:53 pm
HAHA i knew it , the moment i saw the list i knew Jar Jar would be number1, i really dont see why everyone hates him so much
129. alextenn - May 21st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Rocketiza:
I had a feeling the term “sidekick” would require some explaining, and that is exactly why I didn’t explain it. Its pretty subjective. I actually thought about simply calling it “characters from movies” instead of “sidekicks”, but I decided that since I was taking characters from mostly action/adventure movies, I went with “sidekicks” because that seemed to fit the action/adventure theme. Since when did “sidekick” require “a connection and deep relationship with a main character as someone who is constantly helping them out”? Thats an interesting explanation. By my calculations, this list contains at least 7 that fit your definition exactly, and the other 3 of which fulfill at least some of the definition.
As I said above, I would love to hear any alternate choices for this list. I scoured movies (read that again… MOVIES, not TV) for hours thinking of all the possibilities.
Lizzie: Leo Getz would have been a great addition to this list.
130. alextenn - May 21st, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Sometimes I wonder if 90% of the people actually read what the contributor writes, or if they just scan the list quickly, make a quick judgment, and then post a comment. Which is fine if they do, its just makes it harder to spot the ones who actually contribute knowledgeable responses
131. Ben - May 21st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Some of these are ok, but I think Bubba is waaay off.First of all, you said these guys were just distractions, but i think Bubba was a real genuine inclusion in forrest gump. I mean up till then all forrest had was his mom and jenny, bubba was completely new and it was a big thing in the story. Plus it made for one of the first times forrest actually had to deal with adversity. Sure, he got made fun of before, but he always had someone to tell him he was the best until bubba died. Sorry for the long rant on just one thing
132. Ptbus - May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm
You have offended me by putting bubba on this list.
133. Cyn - May 21st, 2008 at 10:30 pm
alextenn -
think ya hit the nail on the head.
still i am glad of those few who are really into LV. read the lists. make note of the contributor. address their comments/complaints and yes, praise to that specific person.
LV really is a ’slice’ of cyber ‘life’. 90% of stuff online is crap. but when you find that 10% that is real gold…like LV!…you know you’ve found something worth returning to and doing whatever you can to support it.
i appreciate you contributing this list and hope these comments have not put you off submitting more lists.
134. geronimo - May 22nd, 2008 at 12:03 am
I found Gollum more creepy than irritating..and ultimately he turns out to be a tragic character..not sure if it is right to include him in this list……
135. jfrater - May 22nd, 2008 at 12:48 am
Well this list has been a very enjoyable one to read - and many of the comments are good - so that is a consolation when reading the ones which are not. I do agree with almost everyone on the list but I don’t mind if people want to bitch
136. WOW - May 22nd, 2008 at 1:10 am
Never have I seen such hate on this site before!
funny how we all hate Jar Jar though.
137. Nejikun - May 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 am
Let’s see…
Gollum, No. He’s one of the most important characters in LOTR. The scenes with the split personality are the most interesting in the movies.
Willey Scott = Love interest, not sidekick.
Jar Jar, Pintel & Ragetti, and Ruby = comic Relief…
The only 2 who actually qualify as “sidekick” are Chewy, whom i don’t agree with, and Riley Poole.
For those who suggested C3PO, he slot into comic relief, the same as Pintel and Ragetti.
138. carpe_noctem - May 22nd, 2008 at 2:10 am
alextenn, don’t second guess yourself, this is a great list, and a really original idea. you won’t find a single list on this site that has everyone agreeing with every choice. just because a character is annoying doesn’t mean they aren’t funny, by the end of The Fifth Element, if Chris Tucker had said another word, I was going to destroy the movie screen, but as comic relief, he was hilarious, and Chewy is a big, lovable.. alien thing… but whenever his mouth opens, you want that warp drive not to work, just so we can have some quiet for a little while…
great list mate, don’t ever be put off by criticism
139. HA - May 22nd, 2008 at 3:02 am
This is one of the best lists I’ve seen on this site. (And I’ve read them all)
And the folks posting so upset about you pointing out how awful these characters (especially Chewy and that awful LOTR thing) are the icing on the pretend list cake.
I also don’t understand how the importance of a character has anything to do with how annoying they are.
140. Mandy - May 22nd, 2008 at 3:37 am
hmmm I agree with most, like stifler and ja ja but i totaly disagree with Gollum i find his chacter extremly interesting and liked him alot… althought in real life i wouldnt just at the chance to be his best friend… lol
141. Mandy - May 22nd, 2008 at 3:38 am
Jump***
142. Andrey - May 22nd, 2008 at 3:53 am
The list is preety good except for Bubba.People liked him:)
143. Iain - May 22nd, 2008 at 4:16 am
The most annoying sidekick bar none - Stu Kominsky, the little fat friend in ‘Good Luck Chuck’ - the worst thing in a truly horrible movie. Thank God I didn’t have to pay for to see it.
144. Iain - May 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 am
‘pay for to see it’ … way to sound special
145. stevenh - May 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 am
alextenn:
Interesting list - great idea. Thank you.
Perhaps Jamie should replace the tag line “Lists with a twist” with “In my humble opinion” - (a) he gets a bit of flack on the tag line and (b) perhaps it will slow down some of the list bashing comments… nahh, that’ll never happen.
146. SonOfMyFather - May 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 am
I thought Short Round was more annoying than Willie in Temple of Doom.
147. MonkeyBrains - May 22nd, 2008 at 5:52 am
I’ve got to say, this list fails on many levels.
How can you call David Levinson a side-kick?! He was a chief character in that film (saving the world not important enough for you?!) and NOT some annoying Robin to Will Smith’s batman…. annoying secondary characters maybe, but side-kick? I don’t think so.
And Ruby Rhod? Anyone who tried to take that character seriously should probably readjust their humour settings.
Its a shame this list doesn’t really do what it says on the tin - Gollum, not a side-kick and a vital part of the story (try reading the book). Pintell and Ragetti - they’re personal dynamic was the only thing that made an otherwise boring and over-hollywoodified trilogy vaguely watchable.
Some of the characters on this list are underdeveloped yes, sometimes even a little pointless, but to call half of them side-kicks is blatently wrong. At least the list was funny though.
Apart from Jar Jar Binks. Even I wanted to kill him.
148. stevenh - May 22nd, 2008 at 6:03 am
alextenn:
It appears the consensus is that you could have had Jar Jar Binks as item 10 though 1, listing the top ten ways that he is annoying…. of course you’d have to limit it to 10 items - difficult
149. fishing4monkeys - May 22nd, 2008 at 6:06 am
I can honestly say this is the DUMBEST list i’ve EVER read on this site! Apart from #1 and #8 they were all pretty good sidekicks! Do you honestly think movies should only have 1 character? Wow…just wow…
150. David - May 22nd, 2008 at 6:08 am
It’s ok Listverse, every website has a bad day.
Horrible list.
151. Jayhawk - May 22nd, 2008 at 6:39 am
Great movie sidekicks…
Marcus Brody-Indiana Jones Last Crusade
Chunk-Goonies
Barf- Spaceballs
Ray Stantz-Ghostbusters
Dignan-Bottle Rocket
152. astraya - May 22nd, 2008 at 6:53 am
Donkey in Shrek.
153. catseye - May 22nd, 2008 at 7:05 am
Well, call me strange (wouldn’t be the first time) but I like Chris Tucker and I enjoyed the Ruby Rhod character’s energy and wit. (He did scream a little too much) Bruce Willis was very subdued in The Fifth Element and Chris/Ruby was there for contrast.
I just love the Fifth Element. It was everything the later Star Wars films should have been.
154. ozhan - May 22nd, 2008 at 7:41 am
Gollum’s story is my favorite part of the books. In movies… its good.
155. JayArr - May 22nd, 2008 at 7:49 am
Clantargh (97) - I know an elephant that cut its own ears off in protest after seeing Jar Jar Binks…
156. JayArr - May 22nd, 2008 at 7:53 am
Iain (144) - LOL! That’s okay… I am for to doing that myself sometimes.
157. S.D.Schaffer - May 22nd, 2008 at 7:58 am
Jeff Goldblum’s character is drinking “Old Bushmill’s” Irish whiskey, NOT vodka. Bushmill’s also appears prominently in “The Sting” and “On the Waterfront.” (Great stuff by the way.)
Agree with Kate Capshaw, I think we all know how she got that role. Hayden Christiansen made Jar Jar look like Laurence Olivier, awful acting. (Jar Jar was painful to watch.)
158. YashaMaru - May 22nd, 2008 at 8:07 am
although i agree with 8 and 6, i must object.
stifler is one of the characters who bring out the most laughters. and AP has been crap ever since they changed the roster. boo them.
no gollum, no lord of the rings. period. he is a much needed annoyance, and though i hate him; lotr simply wouldnt even be without him.
159. facekickin - May 22nd, 2008 at 8:18 am
this list only becomes legitimate from five down. c’mon man. bubba was the only character forrest could identify with. race was a non-issue to them in a time if extreme prejudice. and gollum. are you serious? if anything, he was a scene STEALER. his eyes and movements left me incredulous. but yeah. from 5 to 1 I completely agree with. those guys sucked.
160. Jim - May 22nd, 2008 at 9:06 am
Thanks for noting Riley Poole! He is single-handedly preventing both of those awesome movies from being my kids’ Indiana Jones. Not that Jon Voight is very helpful…
I could never put my finger on why I hate the Temple of Doom, but I think you nailed it. A few weeks ago when the trilogy was on USA I was very excited, but ended up distracted during that one, now I know why. Short Round was awesome, if you want to point the finger at a poorly-designed stereotype, redirect to Sallah.
I’d also like to submit the following to the follow-up list:
Schraeder from Accepted
Randall from Clerks and Clerks 2
Richard Belzer and Richard Lewis in The Wrong Guys (what, movies nobody has ever seen don’t count?)
Chet Ripley (Dan Akroyd) in The Great Outdoors (he was supposed to be, just like Chris Rock in the Third Element, but still!
161. dofnup - May 22nd, 2008 at 9:11 am
LOVE that you included Willie Scott. Gawd, she was annoying. Plus she was a huge letdown after the awesomeness that was Marion.
162. yeltay - May 22nd, 2008 at 10:03 am
I agree with Th Jack. This was the worst list I have ever seen on this site. I couldn’t agree with a single one except Jar Jar. I have never posted until now but this terrible list inspired me.
163. Tiffany H - May 22nd, 2008 at 10:09 am
to be fair, Sam was more of a sidekick than Gollum. both annoying. VERY annoying.
164. DK - May 22nd, 2008 at 11:22 am
This was an extremely well written list, and it’s obvious that alextenn put a lot of effort & thought into this list. Because of that it’s unfortunate that I totally disagree with most of it! Some of these characters I wouldn’t consider “sidekicks,” and the ones who are sidekicks, are sidekicks I love!
The only one I agree with 100% is Jar Jar of course! And I suppose, while I thought Ruby Rhod was a great character (though I wouldn’t say side kick, more of a secondary character) and really makes the movie, he was pretty annoying! Leo Getz would have been good for the list for the same reason I suppose, he’s annoying, but I couldn’t help but love him for it.
I agree also with one of the previous comments, though I’m too lazy to go find it again, who stated you may have to be a girl to “get” Riley Poole, he was my favorite part of the National Treasure movies, I had a huge crush on him:)
Kudos to Alextenn for being ballsy enough to put together a list like this, even though I disagree with it. You had to know it would be controversial:)
165. Cyn - May 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 am
DK-
now see it is possible to take issue w/ a list w/out dissing the contributor or the site. nicely done DK!
as for controversial…that is what LV is all about, eh?
166. Barack Obama - May 22nd, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Alextenn: I wrote you off when I read your comment about American Pie. Then you came right back with your Pirates of the Carribean bit, and then TOTALLY REDEEMED YOURSELF WITH PUTTING THE BLONDE CHICK FROM INDIANI JONES ON THERE! WORST. FEMALE. COUNTERPART. EVER.
167. R. Nixon - May 22nd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Bubba was a great character. The innocence of the bond between him and Forrest was endearing. You really missed the mark on this one. -1
168. DK - May 22nd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Why thank you Cyn:) Of course that’s what it’s all about, and I’m impressed at the ability to create such controversy without mentioning politics, religion, or The Beatles!
169. Star_Rider - May 22nd, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Ruby Rhod is one of the funniest personalities I’ve seen in ANY movie!!! Chris Tucker played “it” magnificently!

Ruby Rhod friggen rules. He and Chewbacca deserve to be OFF this list. As does Willie Scott from The Temple of Doom. She’s not a sidekick. Short “Shorty” Round was Indiana Jones’s sidekick in that particular movie. Willie was the annoying love interest. Get it right.
171. Paul - May 22nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Chewbacca? You’re crazy. He’s both helpful and adorable.
172. Phillies - May 22nd, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I am conflicted.
Your list includes Willie Scott, which was the precise first name that came to mind when I read the title of this list. An honorable mention could go to Short Round, though it’s not even close to a measurable fraction of how bad Willie Scott is.
And yet….and yet you include Chewbacca? Chewie?? The big hairball??? How? I can count the number of times throughout the series how many times he’s annoyed me, and that number is a resounding zero. Chewie and Han…they go so well together. I just…ugh……….
And Gollum??? I loved that guy! How can you say he was annoying with a straight face? How??
Of course, I will agree with Jar jar Binks. Anyone who has two brain cells to rub together (and a matching set of ears) will agree 1,000% with that choice.
Still, a so-so list, I’m sorry to say
173. robneiderman - May 22nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm
This list = fail.
Jar Jar is annoying, agreed. Didn’t see National Treasure (looked stupid). Everyone else on the list was either perfectly tolerable or perfectly awesome.
Worst. List. Ever.
174. Marty - May 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm
What you say about that annoying Clara that Doc meets in Back to the Future III?
All she is there for is ruining all the plans the main characters make through the entire movie, saying she’s in love and showing she couldn’t really do much more because of her flat brain. OMG, I hate that character.
175. Tucker2046 - May 22nd, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Jar Jar Binks is THE NO. 1 ANNOYING CHARACTER — SIDEKICK OR OTHERWISE — IN MOVIE HISTORY. There, thank you, I got that off my chest. I’ve been waiting years to unload. Look, sidekicks all can’t be Gabby Hayes, but good grief, what in the hell was George Lucas thinking?
176. PunkPenguin - May 22nd, 2008 at 7:05 pm
I disagree totally with Gollum…..he was a very important character to the role and there was a lot of work that went in to creating his character. He was actually one of my favorite characters in the movie…at moments I wanted him to die and other moments my heart wept for him…..I will admit the excessive drooling was a bit much for me but all in all I think he does not deserve to be on this list!!!
177. JwJwBean - May 22nd, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Wow you all are way harsh. I am starting to be really happy my list never made it on listverse. I know that movie lists of any sort seem to be controversial, but to flat out say “worst list, that character was important so he shouldn’t be on this list”,is just downright rude. So what if the character was important, it doesn’t mean the character wasn’t annoying too. And this is one person’s opinion. Post your own top 10 of who you thought were annoying sidekicks. I know you won’t because you all are too afraid someone else will rip you a new one like you are doing to Alextenn. Now you all need to behave or else I am going to have to pull this car over and…
178. getoutofmommysbasement - May 22nd, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Can someone please explain how being annoying has anything to do with how important someone is in a movie?
“gollum is important, so he isn’t annoying” What sense does that make??
It is creepy the way you are defending a cartoon.
179. MPW - May 22nd, 2008 at 9:49 pm
i knew a girl that looked like chewbacca
180. enxchanted - May 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 pm
i absolutely HATED willie scott in The Temple of Doom. She is the only reason that I like that particular movie less than the other two. Insufferable.
But chewie?! I loved chewbacca! I’ve always wanted a wookie
181. Nejikun - May 22nd, 2008 at 11:59 pm
My point is, Gollum’s not a sidekick, so he doesn’t qualify.
182. sue - May 23rd, 2008 at 12:21 am
Thank u,thank u,thank u for including stifler on this list.he drives me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!! And i thought Bubba was sweet:)
183. matthewsej - May 23rd, 2008 at 4:36 am
Hey I liked Jar Jar, its his anoyingness that makes him so cute
184. Rebecca - May 23rd, 2008 at 5:23 am
worst. list. ever. (not the idea, but I disagree with 99% of it).
185. Peri - May 23rd, 2008 at 8:00 am
I kinda liked Jar Jar…for the first ten seconds. After that, he got on my nerves.
Willie Scott–she’s the reason I’ve only seen that movie once. Once. I’ve seen the other two many times, to the point where I could quote dialog, but only saw Temple of Doom once because of her.
Ruby Rhod…don’t ask me to explain why, but I just like him.
186. Mandysparky - May 23rd, 2008 at 9:43 am
haha so many people hate this list and so do i! It sucks, nice try better luck next time!!!
187. Renold - May 23rd, 2008 at 7:39 pm
I was about to stop reading this list at number nine, but I persisted, hoping that your next choices wouldn’t suck so much.
I’m glad I did, but I think Willie Scott and Ruby Rhod were an assload more annoying than Jar Jar. How you’ve managed to see the Temple of Doom more than once escapes me.
188. jasontimmer - May 23rd, 2008 at 8:05 pm
ruby rhod has no place on this list whatsoever. 5th element was a fantastic movie, I must have seen it over a hundred times by now. ruby is, of course, annoying, and that’s entirely the point. he’s frickin hilarious. he pisses off korbin just as much, if not more than, the audience, and that’s why he’s just indespensible in this movie.
189. Late O’Day - May 23rd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Um … oldest movie on this list is what? Star Wars? Temple of Doom? The compiler of this list swims in a very shallow cultural pool. Maybe the list should be entitled: “Most Annoying Movie Characters for Kids Who Don’t Know How Many Beatles There Were And Never Saw A Rotary Phone.”
190. JwJwBean - May 23rd, 2008 at 9:29 pm
“188. jasontimmer - May 23rd, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Umm did I miss something? Was the title of the list Top 10 Annoying sidekicks that should never have been in the movie? Umm, no it was Top 10 Most Annoying Sidekicks in Movies. You just said yes he was annoying. I think you proved he should be on this list.
191. alextenn - May 23rd, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Nice, Late O’Day. I see what you did there.
Star Wars came out in 1978 by the way. They had rotary phones back then. In fact, I had one in my house growing up. Along with all of the Beatles albums.
I am sorry if I didn’t include characters from “Some Like It Hot”, “North by Northwest”, or “Vertigo” on this list. Maybe you and your ancient wisdom can shed some light on some annoying sidekicks from movies from a bygone era. You know, that time when gas was a nickel/gallon and you could feed your family for a week on a dollar. Come on, Pops. Enlighten us all.
Of course I know how many Beatles there are. That’s easy. There were 23 of them.
192. jasontimmer - May 23rd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
JwJwBean- I wrote that because of the implication of the list, and a lot of comments on here, that these characters, because of their annoying quality, should have been omitted. To quote Ruby Rhod’s inclusion: “amazing ability to make everyone in the audience wish they had stayed at home. A complete distraction in what is at least a decent movie.”
I rest my case.
193. rp - May 25th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Lots of hate here, but I appreciate the list, though mine would surely be far different. For years, I thought Ruby Rhod was female. Once I discovered who Chris Tucker was, it ruined the movie for me. And is there any more damnable evidence that George Lucas can’t write dialogue than Willy Scott? Poor Kate Capshaw never had a chance with that character. She was the sole reason that so many hate Temple of Doom. Oh, and Chunk from Goonies would be high on my list. I really wanted to see that little bastard endure a tortured, grisly, Ichi the Killer-like death.
194. beccaz - May 26th, 2008 at 12:50 am
Riley Poole may be annoying, but I love his character. He would be my fav in that whole movie.
195. Quiana - May 27th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
@Alextenn. I see what Late o day means. IN MY OPINION the comments make this site go round. If people couldn’t argue, rant, and agree with eachother things wouldn’t be as fun. Just a little advice. This really isn’t your thing, not because you screwed up the list but because your skin isn’t thick enough.
196. faburobin - May 27th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Willie Scott was completely and totally terrible in Indiana Jones, but they needed somebody to get freaked out at the gross stuff Indy just takes in stride. Besides, she was banging the director. (She married him later.)
197. Lizz - May 27th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I loved Jar Jar! D:
198. jfrater - May 27th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Lizz: You may be the only person in the world who does
199. alextenn - May 28th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Quianna:
Just because I want to defend what I wrote doesn’t mean “this isn’t my thing” or I “dont have a thick skin.” I enjoy reading the comments. I submitted a list that got almost 200 comments… I am happy with that. I don’t care that people disagree. You might notice that throughout these comments I have asked people to give alternate examples of annoying sidekicks if they disagree with my list. Unfortunately, most people have not done that.
Besides, its the internet. You don’t need a thick skin to go and post annonymously on the internet.
200. mitchsn - May 29th, 2008 at 5:59 am
OH I know one u missed. Short Round from IJ Temple of Doom.
Child actors. Nuff said.
201. TashaD - May 29th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Ok so it’s a bit of a kids film but surely jiminy cricket deserves a mention, admitedly he’s an animated character but still. Enjoyed the list though and agreed with most of them. Thanks
202. lottalita - May 30th, 2008 at 7:20 am
I don’t agree with the list… scrappy doo is the most annoying side kick, the people in this list just make the movie funny!
203. DatGuyRightDer - June 1st, 2008 at 11:39 am
I agree with every one of those except for 1,3 and 4
204. IEatBugs - June 2nd, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Can we just please remove this list. Its making everyone angry and I quite agree that it is the dumbest one I have came across.
205. MadMonkey - June 2nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
I’m sorry, alextenn, but you are a complete idiot…
206. Green Is Good - June 3rd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Ha ha ha! Jar Jar is #1! Hilarious! When I saw this list, the first annoying sidekick I thought of was Jar Jar.
207. Bart Simpson - June 4th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
hey !! #5,#7 and #8 were not bad at all !!!!
208. rushfan - June 5th, 2008 at 7:23 am
#3 is right on. My god, he almost ruined an awesome, badass movie. And he’s normally so funny. I wonder if it was the script or his interpretation of the character.
209. Crash - June 6th, 2008 at 7:06 am
With the exception of #3 and #1, I disagree with this list. Bubba was a great character, and his similarities to Forrest were essential to their bond. Chewbacca, I don’t have to defend that beloved character (the writer of the list is in a tiny minority of people who are annoyed by him…choose the Ewoks and you might get some agreement). Gollum is the written word come to life. Just because you have a weak stomache, you shouldn’t hate the character (besides, he wasn’t a sidekick, he was a confused, tortured villian. I did not see Levinson as a “sidekick” either. He propelled the action much more than Will Smith. Smith had one action scene toward the beginning and another at the end when he basically did what Levinson told him to do. The rest of the time he stood around posturing. Levinson was the true hero of the movie. Stifler? He wasn’t a sidekick either. He was an annoyance…but to the other characters, which made him funny. The pirates were funny to most people, so again, enjoy your lonely party.
Willie Scott was a character established to be the complete opposite of Marion Ravenwood. Not adventurous, not self motivated, not capable. Instead of a help to Indy, she was a hinderence…making his efforts more difficult. This was planned. People just don’t get it.
Riley Poole may have annoyed you, but was a lot of people’s (including me and
