Top 10 Greatest Fictional Bands
Published on July 13, 2008 - 217 Comments
The world’s hipsters and rock writers will endlessly debate who the greatest rock bands of all time are. Some bands like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin will always be included in the discussion but others are sadly ignored. Some are overlooked for the simple reason that they do not actually exist. So, to give these sorely under-appreciated bands some recognition, here are the Top Ten Fictional Bands of all time.
Notable Members: Kevin Malone
Style: Cover Band
Essential Listening: Roxanne, You Were Meant for Me
Originally a Steve Miller tribute band known as “Jokers and Tokers,” Scrantonicity now plays covers of The Police (though they have been known to cover other artists at live shows). The band has recently gone through a huge upheaval as Kevin Malone- the band’s lead vocalist and drummer- left the group. He has gone on to form a new band Scrantonicity II. Immediately the two bands began an intense rivalry that continues to this day.
Notable Members: Tobias Funke, Lindsay Funke, Maeby Funke
Style: Folk
Essential Listening: Teamocil
“Dr. Funke’s 100% Natural Good Time Family Band Solution” was a 1990’s folk trio consisting of the family of Tobias and Lindsay Funke and their daughter, Maeby. The group was underwritten by the Natural Life Food Company, a division of Chem-Grow, an Allen Crayne acquisition, which was part of the Squimm Group. As a result the group’s songs tended to focus upon the various drugs the company offered. Nevertheless, the band gained a very small but very devoted following. The band eventually split up due to growing tensions within the family. A reunion show at a Los Angeles wellness convention ended with Lindsay and Maeby storming offstage leaving Tobias to finish the show with the help of an eager fan. [The clip above is a tribute to the show itself as none of the music clips could be found.]
Notable Members: Uli Kunkel
Style: Electronica
Essential Listening: Hit and Run, Faking It
German techno-pop pioneers Autobahn released only one album entitled “Nagelbett” in the late seventies. They are perhaps the best example of a band being “ahead of its time.” Though they are now recognized as great innovators in the world of techno, their album was almost universally disparaged by both critics and audiences alike. Utter demoralized, the band dissolved. All of its members fell on hard times with band leader Uli Kunkel even resorting to the adult film industry before disappearing from the public eye completely.
Notable Members: Homer Simpson, Barney Gumble, W. Seymour Skinner, Apu de Beaumarchais
Style: Barbershop Quartet
Essential Listening: Baby On Board, Number 8
A barbershop quartet hailing from Springfield, USA, The Be-Sharps experienced a meteoric rise to fame following the release of their first album “Meet the Be-Sharps” which featured the unlikely hit “Baby on Board.” Success, however, was fleeting. By the time their sophomore effort “Bigger Than Jesus” the band was divided by creative differences which lead the group splitting up. In recent years they reunited only once for a concert atop Moe’s Cavern, though reunion tour rumors continue to abound.
Notable Members: Jesse Katsopolis
Style: Rock
Essential Listening: Forever
Jesse and the Rippers came roaring out of the San Francisco rock scene when they recorded a cover of the classic Beach Boys tune “Forever.” The song became a surprise hit with both fans and the Beach Boys themselves. In fact, three of the Beach Boys even appeared as the band’s back-up singers in the official video. The band split shortly after their first tour. The break-up was primarily due to lead vocalist and guitarist Jesse Katsopolis’s unwillingness to put the band ahead of his family. (He was helping raise his dead sister’s three daughters in addition to his own twin sons.) Since then the members have gone on to various other projects. Most notably Katsopolis’s new band Hot Daddy and the Monkey Puppets.
Notable Members: Monroe Yoder, Wendy Nespott, Chap Lippman, Flounder
Style: Pop Rock
Essential Listening: Killer Tofu, I Need Mo’ Allowence
After their first single “I Sneezed On My Face” dropped in the mid-nineties, The Beets were an unstoppable force in pop music releasing such modern pop classics as “Where’s My Sock?”, and “You Gotta Shout Your Lungs Out.” Hit after hit resulted in a huge fan base and a declaration of “Beet Mania” by the press. Eventually the band members decided to go their separate ways but not before releasing their masterful final LP, “Let it Beet.” Each of The Beets has now gone on to a solo career leaving fans only dreaming of a reunion.
Notable Members: Charlie Pace, Liam Pace
Style: Pop Rock
Essential Listening: You All (Everybody)
DriveShaft exploded onto the modern music scene in 1999 with their infectious single “You All (Everybody).” That single rose all the way to number one in both the UK and the US. Following the monumental success of their first album, the band experienced a great deal of difficulty in recording a follow-up. When it was finally released “Oil Change” found little popularity with critics or the public. The group disbanded shortly after. Charlie Pace, the band’s bassist and main songwriter, expressed interest in reforming the group in the fall of 2004. Sadly, Pace was among those who died on September 22, 2004 in the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. His death, however, sparked renewed interest for the band. Now, Charlie Pace is widely appreciated as songwriter by the critics and fans who once wrote him off as a one-hit wonder.
Notable Members: Hotblack Desiato
Style: Loud
Essential Listening: Only The End Of The World Again
The band Disaster Area is commonly cited as being the loudest band in the universe, and in fact the loudest sound of any kind, anywhere. Their legendary live shows are generally considered to be best when experienced at a safe distance of thirty seven miles away from a well-built concrete bunker. Their most recent shows have featured a segment in which an actual spaceship is crashed into the nearest sun. This stunt resulted in the planet of Kakrafoon being transformed from a harsh desert planet into a tropical paradise. A spokesman for the band commented that it was “a good gig.” The band is currently touring in spite of the fact that photon-ajuitar player Hotblack Desiato is currently spending a year dead for tax purposes.
Notable Members: Jeff Bebe, Russell Hammond
Style: Classic Rock
Essential Listening: Fever Dog, Love Comes and Goes
Hailing from Troy, Michigan, Stillwater is still known as one of the wild and raucous bands of the 1970’s both on-stage and off. After stints opening for such legends as Black Sabbath and the Allman Brothers Band, the group embarked on its now notorious Almost Famous Tour in support of their second album ‘Farrington Road.” Sex, drugs and every other rock ‘n roll excess permeated the tour which culminated in a Rolling Stone cover. The tour also caused tension between the band’s core members Jeff Bebe and Russell Hammond resulting in the band dissolving after only one more album.
Notable Members: Derek St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, Derek Smalls
Style: Heavy Metal
Essential Listening: Sex Farm, Lick My Love Pump, Big Bottom
In the history of rock ‘n roll, there has never been a career more unlikely than that of Spinal Tap. Dubbed “England’s Loudest Band” the group has gained far-reaching popularity unrivaled by its musical contemporaries. This is undoubtedly due to the Marty DeBergi documentary “This is Spinal Tap” which chronicled the group’s 1982 tour which was plagued by band in-fighting and poor ticket sales. Following the film’s release the band’s fan base greatly expanded and the group went on to become one of the most beloved in the history of rock. They recently reunited for a show at Wembley Stadium in London as a part of Live Earth where they unveiled a new song “Warmer than Hell.”

Not even Dethklok…
2. Csimmons - July 13th, 2008 at 3:08 am
nice list, i would argue for Dethklok and the Gorillaz though
3. astraya - July 13th, 2008 at 3:08 am
There is another Simpsons episode where Bart, Nelson, Milhouse and ?Ralph form a boy band under the guidance of an entrepreneur who just might have an ulterior motive, which Lisa is determined to find.
Anyone for WYLD STALLYON? “Be excellent to each other, and Party On, Dude!”
4. Ellen - July 13th, 2008 at 3:10 am
Love Scrantonicity and the B-sharps! But where are the Rutles??
5. MPW - July 13th, 2008 at 3:11 am
nice list. really great stuff
6. jfrater - July 13th, 2008 at 3:13 am

7. Rachel - July 13th, 2008 at 3:17 am
No Wonders?
8. ciunas - July 13th, 2008 at 3:22 am
Very good. Got to be ‘Spinal Tap’ at #1 of course.
The terrible heavy metal band Bad News should get an honourable mention at least. The first episode of ‘The Comic Strip Presents…’ in which they appeared was aired on TV in the UK at around the same time as ‘Spinal Tap’ was released, so their amazing awfulness was eclipsed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_News
(’A Mighty Wind’ (2003), from the ‘Spinal Tap’ guys, is full of fantastic parodies of folk groups.)
9. astraya - July 13th, 2008 at 3:24 am
At the very least we could have had a list that went all the way to 11!
11th comment?
10. Tom - July 13th, 2008 at 3:25 am
It just had to be Spinal Tap. Kudos to Harry Shearer, who was in two of these great bands, lol.
11. MPW - July 13th, 2008 at 3:27 am
Yes! Dethklok indeed
12. astraya - July 13th, 2008 at 3:30 am
Damn! Tom and MPW were already showing as 9 and 10, so I posted what I hoped would be the Nigel Tufnel memorial comment as 11.
13. ciunas - July 13th, 2008 at 3:32 am
astraya: Never mind — #9 still made me smile.
14. Spart - July 13th, 2008 at 3:44 am
Flight of the Concords…anyone?
15. Disc - July 13th, 2008 at 3:46 am
14. Spart - July 13th, 2008 at 3:44 am
Flight of the Concords…anyone?
FotC are not fictional, they are a real comedy duo from New-Zealand. They played in a lot of comedy clubs before they got their TV-show.
16. Patrona - July 13th, 2008 at 4:11 am
Why aren’t the wonders up there?
17. matt - July 13th, 2008 at 4:48 am
don’t you mean the “oneders”
18. Kish - July 13th, 2008 at 5:04 am
Deathklok and the gorillaz are real bands…..they might be animated so they cant exactly tour but their goal is to sell records
19. thirtytwo - July 13th, 2008 at 5:11 am
Scrantonicity!
Pleased to see them get a mention.
ciunas: Agree with you about Bad News as The Comic Strip Presents is one of my favourite shows.
20. Paardekopski - July 13th, 2008 at 5:12 am
Haha, after seeing the “Worst movie scenes” list, I vote for the raptrio from Teenwitch…
..Top that!
21. DiscHuker - July 13th, 2008 at 5:20 am
hellooooo?!?!?!
where is the “zack attack” from saved by the bell?
can’t really argue with spinal tap, but c’mon. we need more kelly kapowski!
22. Scott - July 13th, 2008 at 6:08 am
Oh wow! The Beets!
brings back childhood memories of watching Doug before going to school.
23. joshlops - July 13th, 2008 at 6:26 am
What about Electric Apricot or Forgone Conclusion!!!!
24. romerozombie - July 13th, 2008 at 6:32 am
Predictable. Saw No 1 a mile off. I never found Spinal Tap funny. Though ‘The Majesty Of Rock’ is a great song.
25. Vanamonde - July 13th, 2008 at 6:56 am
Missing: Strange Fruit, from the movie “Still Crazy”.
26. warningdontreadthis - July 13th, 2008 at 7:28 am
Oh HELL no! I liked the idea of the list but no Rutles?
Niel Innes and Eric Idle in the same (fictional) band and it didnt make the list? Shame on you!
27. MackZ - July 13th, 2008 at 7:28 am
What about Steel Dragon?
From ‘Rock Star’ with Mark Wahlberg.
Any takers? anyone?
no?
ok.
28. TDavis - July 13th, 2008 at 7:32 am
I’d have to put the Rutles in there.
And The Wonders (O.K., The Oneders.)
29. ChuChu353 - July 13th, 2008 at 7:33 am
What about Fingerbang and Faith + One
30. ScottyBGood - July 13th, 2008 at 7:38 am
I was surprised neither Dr. Teeth & Electric Mayhem or Josie & The Pussycats cracked the top ten. Now, with that out of the way it’s time to bust out some obscurities:
The Evolution Revolution (Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp)
The Zit Remedy (DeGrassi)
The Nightmare (Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas)
The Neptunes (Jabberjaw)
and for the Australians out there, anyone remember the Orange Organics?
Oh, and Dingoes Ate My Baby should be on the list too, in my opinion.
Here endeth the diatribe.
31. Kreachure - July 13th, 2008 at 7:38 am
I don’t like the way the list is written. It doesn’t say where the fictional bands are from (what movie? what show?), and it doesn’t make a distinction between real life and fictional events.
For example, Spinal Tap hasn’t “gained far-reaching popularity unrivaled by its musical contemporaries” in real life, but it DID play in Live Aid for real, but you just can’t tell from the paragraph!
That being said, I would have liked the list more if it had Strange Fruit from “Still Crazy”…
32. Ben - July 13th, 2008 at 7:44 am
Actually, Spinal Tap are included in this kind of discussions, although they are fictional.
Some more bands: Fingerbang, Randy’s band and Timmy and The Lords of the Underworld (from South Park; Timmy’s band actually has a song on Rock Band) should be added.
There’s “My Pony”, or something like that, in a Veronica Mars episode, and I heard there was one in a Family Guy episode.
You can add Ziggy Stardust, also.
Like someone stated before, Dethklok and Gorillaz are real bands, if not then it’s on the edge. This list should be expanded nonetheless.
33. Ben - July 13th, 2008 at 7:55 am
And two more from South Park: “Moop”, and “Faith +1″.
34. fishing4monkeys - July 13th, 2008 at 8:03 am
Csimmons: Yeah I agree about dethklok but…uhh…the gorillaz are real. They may be represented as cartoon characters but the band itself is a real band.
35. deepthinker - July 13th, 2008 at 8:05 am
Good thing you put Spinal Tap at #1… Yay!! Christopher Guest is a genius.
36. Crimanon - July 13th, 2008 at 8:07 am
DETHKLOK SUCKS!!! And they are a legitimate band, the same goes for Gorillaz.
Therefore they CAN NOT be on this list… People Wake up, Why do you think people complain about our music? Those two choices Suck, listen to something better, Please!
^^^^^ You’ll notice the uncharacteristic screaming… I mean what I said.
37. deepthinker - July 13th, 2008 at 8:13 am
Flight of the Conchords is a real band… and they are Ucking awesome!!
38. behrad - July 13th, 2008 at 8:17 am
how about “the Bang Bang” from “Brothers of the Head” mockumentary? I understand not a lot people have seen this movie but you should definitely check them out cause in my opinion they are the greatest fictional band.
39. warningdontreadthis - July 13th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Kreachure: It does. Check out the names of the band and right under that the shows/movies are written.
40. Moe Shinola - July 13th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Dude! You forgot The Barbusters! Michael J. and Joan Jett!
41. seashell66 - July 13th, 2008 at 8:57 am
Wild Stallyons, The Oneders, and the Lone Rangers from Airheads. and, yeah, the Barbusters. Ok maybe some of them sucked but, hey, they at least deserve a mention.
42. fredfreddy - July 13th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Wow Disaster Area and Drive Shaft listed back to back, you made my morning.
43. Aaron - July 13th, 2008 at 9:07 am
Where is that clip from Restaurant at the End of the Universe from?
44. chemical_echo - July 13th, 2008 at 9:13 am
No Worthless Pions from Scrubs?
45. Vera Lynn - July 13th, 2008 at 9:18 am
ScottyBGood (30) I have the book Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas. I’ve had it for years. That is really obscure.
46. TheAwesome - July 13th, 2008 at 9:21 am
I went through this list expecting to see Dethklok as number 1…
47. Vera Lynn - July 13th, 2008 at 9:24 am
And The Rutles should be included, definitely.
But maybe not so much The Banana Splits. Anyone remember them? 1 banana, 2 banana, 3 banana, 4, 4 bananas make a bunch of…what?
48. warningdontreadthis - July 13th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Vera: Cant buy me lunch xDD
I love Idle
49. WarningDontReadThis - July 13th, 2008 at 9:28 am
What happend to the rest of my comment? D:
50. Frodydude - July 13th, 2008 at 9:37 am
What about Dethklock?
51. Mandrake - July 13th, 2008 at 9:40 am
my god, why isn’t “Ellen Aim and the Attackers” in this list!?!?
And if you don’t know where they’re from, I’ll tell you; the movie called “Streets of fire”.
love that movie^^
52. Mandrake - July 13th, 2008 at 9:42 am
oh, and another great band i forgot that almost has to be in this list; “Bad News” from the movie with the same name.
53. Navik - July 13th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Dethklok Dethklok Dethklok!!
Go into the water….
54. Namowal - July 13th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Ouch! No Ruttles?
55. kowzilla - July 13th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Wow.
Thanks everyone for the great feed back!
To answer some questions:
1. This could have been a top 15, 20, etc list. But I didn’t feel like I could write full “profiles” for some of these bands.
That being said some of the other bands I considered included Dethklok, The Rutles, Fingerbang, The Worthless Pions, Desmond Winston Manchester IX (The Royal Tenenbaums), Marie deSalle (High Fidelity), Chip Skylark (The Fairly Odd Parents) and Cylon and Garfunkel (Futurama).
2. #31 Kreature
I tried to write these profiles in the style of a generic rock magazine writer covering these bands as if they were real.
3. I do realize that Spinal Tap was the obvious #1 pick. But honestly, how could I write something about fictional bands without them. If I had left them off, 75% of the comments here would be about how I forgot spinal tap.
4. #9 astraya
If only I was that clever….
56. amanda - July 13th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Are we all forgetting the Monkeys? They weren’t a real band, they were actors.
57. cheese - July 13th, 2008 at 10:05 am
no foregone conclusion from the office (uk)
58. Ian - July 13th, 2008 at 10:11 am
dethklok and gorillaz are real bands.
59. Spanner in the worksj - July 13th, 2008 at 10:15 am
amanda (56),
I think you mean the Monkees. They started off as invented for a series but then took off commercially as a ‘real’ group, didn’t they? In which their category as fictional is doubtful to say the least.
60. Spanner in the worksj - July 13th, 2008 at 10:19 am
Just loved the Be-Sharps. Mentioned ‘Baby on Board’ in the context of another earlier List here (10 Worst Fads, or something).
61. Karpy - July 13th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Didn’t Kevin Malone leave Scrantonicity and start Scrantonicity 2? Either way, I love that it’s on this list.
62. fbf - July 13th, 2008 at 10:23 am
it’s ‘DAVID st. hubbins’, not ‘DEREK st. hubbins’!
63. thirtytwo - July 13th, 2008 at 10:23 am
I quite liked California Dreams too, for my sins. Typical 90s cheese.
64. Yun - July 13th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Concurrence on:
Dethklok
Wyld Stallyns
Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem
The Lone Rangers sucked, the Monkees actually went on tour as themselves, and Gorillaz are music-first, cartoon second (which is how they’re different from Dethklok.)
Also: No Partridge Family?
65. YogiBarrister - July 13th, 2008 at 11:07 am
You got the #one right but The Monkees and the Commitments are two obvious snubs. I’ll add my vote for The Rutles as well.
66. WarningDontReadThis - July 13th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Yes the Rultes fans are uniting.
We shall win.
Well at least we’ll get a notable mention for the Rutles.
67. amanda - July 13th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Yes I ment Monkees. I hate it when people misspell things for entertainment. It’s a pet peeve. Anyway, the Monkees released albums, but they were like soundtracks to the TV show. They were really popular, but all the albums and tours were spin offs of the show.
68. Spanner in the worksj - July 13th, 2008 at 11:28 am
It may or may not be relevant here, but perhaps worth recording that ‘This is Spinal Tap’ rates alongside the best films ever made: Maltin: 3 out of 4 stars, Halliwell: 4 out of 4: Amazon’s public poll: 4.5 out of 5. Included in 1000 films to see before you die, “Every frame, every line is a joy.”
69. Spanner in the worksj - July 13th, 2008 at 11:36 am
amanda,
I’ll not put the boot to the Monkees. Anita loved them.
70. paparazzibuzzkill - July 13th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Not one person has mention The Lone Rangers? Airheads was a great movie in my opinion and I am kind of distraught about them not making the cut.
71. bwmyers18 - July 13th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Mackz beat me to it … Steel Dragon epitomized 80’s hair metal (Stand up and SHOOOOOOUUUUUUTTTTTTT !!!!!!!!!)
And Mandrake you’re right - that arrangement of “Tonijht Is What It Means To Be Young” still gives me goosebumps every time … probably my favorite flick (maybe due to my HUGE lifetime crush on Diane Lane)
72. bwmyers18 - July 13th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Make that “Tonight”
73. JAKE - July 13th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
man you guys are forgeting the greatest fictional band of all time even better than spinal tap The Lone Rangers from airheads
74. Yep! - July 13th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
doug? the beets? lol dumb list.
75. Saint Cad - July 13th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
C’mon. You have to have The Dregs of Humanity. Not only were they fictional, they were a fictional band even within the “It’s Your Move” universe.
76. Mom424 - July 13th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
I too am extremely disappointed that neither The Monkees nor The Partridge Family made the list. I still, too this day, remember many of the words from their songs. I believe I was 10 at the time; pre-teen crushes kind of stick with you.
I think I love you, but isn’t that what life is made of…..
77. WarningDontReadThis - July 13th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
I remember once seeing a movie about the partridge family. lots of drugs and sadness in that movie.
78. Rachael - July 13th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Yea! I’m glad the Monkees weren’t on this list because they really aren’t quite as fictional as one who doesn’t know their history may be led to believe.
79. fishing4monkeys - July 13th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Crimanon: Last I checked this site is supposed to allow people to share their opinions and tastes in the comments. I don’t much care for dethklok but they do deserve a spot on this list as they ARE pretty well known and they ARE fictional. What makes you think they’re not fictional? :/
The first line of their wikipedia page:
“Dethklok is a fictional death metal band and the subject of the Adult Swim animated program Metalocalypse”…FICTIONAL
80. Major Wood - July 13th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
DIE FOR DETHKLOK
81. Bobby - July 13th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Check out Bad News, similar to Spinal Tap but beat them by something like two years, I think.
82. segue - July 13th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I have to admit being a complete and total fan of Douglas Adams’ HitchHikers Guide to the Universe, so Disaster Area - Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and all of the related videos I could lay my hands on ( of which there are quite a few), are #1 with me.
jfrater…I could have made a top 20 list just from Disaster Area - Restaurant at the End of the Universe!
83. fraxrfixr - July 13th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I nominate:
Faith +1 (Cartman’s Christian rock group)
Finger Bang (another Southpark star)
84. BOB134 - July 13th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
fishing for monkeys:
Dethklok is NOT a fictional band. the people who voice the characters and play the instruments for the cartoon ARE in fact in a real band and DO in fact go on tour across the U.S.
Now the characters of Pickles the Drummer, Murder Face, Skwisgaar Skwigelf, Toki Wartooth, and Nathan Explosion are not real. However the people who voice them and make the music they play are.
85. walter - July 13th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Does anyone else remember Scum of the Earth from WKRP?
88. Airforce22 - July 13th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Although Stillwater did break up in the 80s. They still play once a year together at a bar in Macon, GA. Also just asking how are the a fictional band when they actually did exist at one time?
89. astraya - July 13th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
kowzilla (at 55): some people are born clever, some people achieve cleverness and some people have occasional moments of brilliance.
90. goof_ball - July 13th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
these bands arent real. and neither is this list. lol jk. good list
91. livingismath - July 13th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

that performance he did in the movie was hilarious, he just drops the microphone at the end and walks off of stage like he is a god hahaha!!! i love that movie
97. KingIggy - July 13th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
What the hell, man!!! Where are the Wild Stallyns. They friggin saved the world. Who made this thing. Oooh, what were you thinking.
98. livingismath - July 13th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
right on Bob! i love how tepid the audience’s reaction is in response to his ‘performance’! it’s like they totally just don’t get him maaan.
99. DiscHuker - July 13th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
i can’t get any love for the “zack attack”?
100. rocknopera - July 13th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I’m excited about the inclusion of Dr. Funke’s band. I anticipated Spinal Tap being number one, although one might argue that Spinal Tap is actually a real band… You know, since they have actual records, and have done a number of tours… Kinda like to think they are real. Good list nevertheless.
101. sarahenity - July 13th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
wasn’t there actually a stillwater in the 70s? the film was more of memoir of cameron crowe’s journalism days right?
i could be way off, but those guys did an excellent job anyway, pretty convincing as a real band.
i’ll second steel dragon aswell, cassandra’s band (who’s name i can’t remember either) from waynes world, the lone rangers from airheads…
hmmm, there’s others, but they’re the notable ones
102. stormy617 - July 13th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Ok every one has mentioned most of the other ones that I had thought except, and I can’t remember what they called themselves, the Brady kids on the Brady Bunch. They had a short lived group. Oh i guess that would exclude them from this list then wouldn’t it. This is a list about bands not groups.
Well then I second the Monkees, and the Partridge family, and The Oneders. I loved the movie That thing You Do.
103. Natalie - July 13th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Josie and the Pussycats definitely deserved to be on this list. =D
104. ScottyBGood - July 13th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Matt:
They were called Crucial Taunt.
105. sarahenity - July 13th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Ahhh Cruical Taunt thats it. Oh wow i almost forgot about the Oneders, I haven’t seen That Thing You Do in ages!

School of Rock!
107. Scarborough Scamp - July 13th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Hard Core Logo from the film of the same name. Good, Canadian punk! (Fronted by Hugh Dillon, formerly of The Headstones.) Check it out. You’ll wish they were a real band.
Secondly, how about The Way-Outs. From The Flintstones I believe.
108. facekickin - July 13th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
no real surprises here. but a couple notable mentions are missing. namely. dethklok.
109. kowzilla - July 13th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I am actually very happy that so many people have come to the defense of The Rutles. I actually decided to cut them out because I thought that they were too obscure. But it appears that there are more people with good taste out there than I predicted.

WHAT?! YOU DIDN’T INCLUDE LIMOZEEN FROM HOMESTAR?!
111. Jason - July 13th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
I refuse to believe you left off Dethklok on purpose. Must have been an error. You also forgot Timmy and The Lords Of The Underworld.

114. Sarah At The Disco - July 13th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Spinal Tap totally rocks :]
They are entirely capable of taking it up to 11.
115. Vera Lynn - July 13th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
I loved The Partridge Family!!! I still have an album (vinyl) that I listen to. And the Monkees? Swoon over Davy Jones (Marcia Brady, anyone?).
116. Vera Lynn - July 13th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

I have a nose for chemistry. Just teasin!
117. astraya - July 13th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
The Monkees spoiled their “fictional” status by turning into a real band. Come to think of it, how many of the bands on this list released “real” records?
118. Vera Lynn - July 13th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
bwmyers (95)
Thanks. That’s right! What’s the second verse? How did you know that? Do you remember it,too? Crazy show. They must all have been stoned or on hallucinogens.

I don’t think they ever played their own instruments. Voices, yes. But music? No. But they sure did have groovy clothes. Lord, you need sunglasses to look at them. Prints, plaids, sateen, whatever. Too funny.

I would never deign to tell you what to do. Right now, I am the Top Commenter. I do not deserve this. My comments are short, and forgetful. If I forget a point, I add it later. So it gives me more posts.
This should go to the people who write more (Randall, Spanner, Segue, etc). Their posts are lengthy and well thought out. They include a LOT more info than I do. They are consistantly more literate and well read about a topic than I am. They are more central to your site than I am. People come to debate them, not read my inane postings.
121. astraya - July 13th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
According to the fount-of-all-knowledge (wikipedia), the members played some instruments for some performances. Nesmith and Torke were capable musicians to start. Dolenz and Jones developed some skills. I remember Nesmith had a single in his own right in about 1976.
BTW, the success of the Monkees prevented another David Jones (sometimes billed as Davy Jones) from releasing records in the USA under that name. That other David Jones chose to become “David Bowie”. The rest, as they say, is history.

126. Spanner in the worksj - July 13th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Vera,
There’s more to top commenting than either maximum intellectual output or sheer quantity per se. Along with information and ideas, you bring a warm, personal touch that I’m sure I’m not alone in appreciating. What’s more, you respond. You must know how much that means to those who post.
And I know you weren’t fishing for this!
127. MPW - July 13th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Spanner in the worksj: you are definitely not alone in appreciating the comments from Vera Lynn.
and whats up with the j at the end of your name? is it a typo?
128. Cedestra - July 13th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
OMG, the Beets. Thank you for that, I was so grooving along to “Killer Tofu”. Ah, the memories.
Now, I’m actually glad kowzilla didn’t include Limozeen. Homestarrunner is so…lame…now. Sure, Trogdor was great and was even used as a bonus track in one of the Guitar Heroes (III?), but that site has really dropped.
I will give you a “lol” for Zack Attack.
I thought it was a great list. Frankly, I don’t think we should be including bands who appeared in a couple of episodes of a show. These should be mainstays.
The Monkees were the original “boy band”. If this were the case, we’d have to include ‘NSync, NKOTB, and the Backstreet Boys. The Monkees toured and made records, even after the show was cancelled. They were a real band (and I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they actually played their own instruments.)
129. askkevin65 - July 14th, 2008 at 12:26 am
Tenacious D is a real band (or a duo at least).
Brady Bunch kids played two different groups on the show. Once they were the “Silver Platters” when they were trying to win an amateur contest to pay for a, you guessed it, a silver platter.
On the Johnny Bravo episode, they were the “Brady Six”
If you are going with Josie and the Pussycats, don’t forget the Groovie Ghoulies and Fat Albert and the Junkyard Band.
And from the short-lived TV show starring Jason Bateman “It’s your move” there is the band “Dregs of Humanity.”
130. caboose - July 14th, 2008 at 12:50 am

That is my fave episode!! I know all the words. Even my kids do. It’s better than the Hawaiian Islands with Vincent Price.
Also, I loved Josie. They were mentioned above.
Hey hey hey, It’s Fat Albert. I’ve got a story for you….

BOB134: Of course the voice actors are real! The simpsons have voice actors…are they real too? I know the voice actors go on tour but the band dethklok (in the show) is fictional.
133. Michael Ellis - July 14th, 2008 at 2:08 am
Sorry, BOB, but as Brendon Small is but one person (supported by a drummer), and as Tommy Blacha plays no music on the soundtrack, your comment makes no sense.
Others:
The Archies (how many cartoon bands have a song that still gets played on oldies stations?)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (who are frankly much better than many “real” bands)
Three Times One Minus One
The Soggy Bottom Boys
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
The Banana Splits
Hornets Attack Victor Mature
Marvin Berry and the Starlighters (from Back to the Future)
Mystik Spyral (but they might change their name)
Motherboy
and, for good measure, Milli Vanilli
134. Ruairi - July 14th, 2008 at 2:08 am
Faith +1 was a good suggestion! My own suggestion is “Various Artists”, founded by Jez and Super Hans from the British cult comedy “Peep Show”. The band went through plenty of name changes but I like “Various Artists” as it’s intended to f*ck up anybody with an iPod “which should push our band back a year or two. Coool.”
135. Spart - July 14th, 2008 at 3:11 am
# 15 Disc
FoTC are a comedy duo - they play at being a folk rock duo for a tv show…leave that one with you…
136. henry o - July 14th, 2008 at 3:31 am
Crucial omission that nobody seems to have mentioned: The Blues Brothers.
137. Drogo - July 14th, 2008 at 3:35 am
Walter #85 beat me to it. I was going to mention Eddie And The Cruisers from the movie “Eddie And The Cruisers”
The music was made by Jackson Browne and hired musicians.
(jake ryder #87) yeah, I remember Scum of the Earth from WKRP.
138. Mom424 - July 14th, 2008 at 3:54 am
henry o; Good point! The Blues Brothers is an embarrassing oversight. I wish I would have thought of them. Who compares with Jake and Elwood?
139. Iain - July 14th, 2008 at 4:18 am
Scotland’s own - The Majestics - from late 80s BBC tv series Tutti Frutti. Probably too obscure even for those of you from the UK - but it did star Robbie Coltrane (as brothers - 1 dead) and oscar-winning Emma Thompson.
140. Iain - July 14th, 2008 at 4:26 am
Anybody mentioned The Wonders - ‘That Thing You Do’?
141. Iain - July 14th, 2008 at 4:35 am

I realize that it’s fictitious “bands”, but I think CB4 and NWH should get a nod.

Cedestra says:
“The Monkees toured and made records, even after the show was cancelled. They were a real band (and I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they actually played their own instruments.”
It’s like Mike said once upon a time “We’re about to go out there in front of thousands of people and if we can’t play our own instruments, we’re in a LOT of trouble.”
144. Jayme - July 14th, 2008 at 7:37 am
What about “Zack Attack” from Saved by the Bell. Their hit song was “Friends Forever”!!
145. Jayme - July 14th, 2008 at 7:40 am
There a Family Guy episode were Chris is in a band and their hit song is “Evil Monkey”
146. SlickWilly - July 14th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Yes, Dethklok should *definately* have been on this list. It is *not* a real band, all of the voices are done by only two guys and the music itself is written and performed by one man, Brenden Small, who voices 3 of the characters in the band. The Gorillaz are a real band: they are a duo of DJ’s, who just happen to use the animated band as a gimmick. The Blues Brothers Rhythym and Blues Revue should have made it on this list and the oversight of either Dr. Teeth and Electric Mayhem or the Riverbottom Nightmare Band are nigh inexcusable. Otherwise, decent list.
147. BishopWhiteT - July 14th, 2008 at 8:28 am
I actually started a list just like this a while back to submit, but never got around to finishing it.
I can’t believe Alice Bowie hasn’t been mentioned! “Mama talkin to me/try to tell me how to live!”
148. BishopWhiteT - July 14th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Oh yeah, and you can find most of them here…

149. SlickWilly - July 14th, 2008 at 8:30 am
Also, I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this to kowzilla yet, (and if they haven’t, I can’t believe it) but Apu’s last name is “Nahasapeemapetilon,” not “de Beaumarchais.”
150. april5k - July 14th, 2008 at 8:52 am
yeah…Hedwig is kind of better than most real bands…
151. Shaner5000 - July 14th, 2008 at 9:16 am
I think the Doodlebops could play circles around any of these bands!
152. trojan_man - July 14th, 2008 at 9:18 am
Mom424: Jake and Elwood were awesome but I think they actually had an album later. What about the band from “Happy Days”? I figured you would be in my age-range and would remember.
153. SlickWilly - July 14th, 2008 at 9:28 am
Trojan_man: Releasing albums cannot qualify a band as a “real” band. Everyone knows that Spinal Tap is a fake band, but they released several albums after the movie and went on an international tour. If the Blues Brothers are disqualified for that reason, then so is Spinal Tap.
154. trojan_man - July 14th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Slick: good point. But my question was aimed more toward the point that the Blues Brothers actually had well-known blues musicians in the band. Spinal Tap was a group of great actors that had music talent. The Blues Brothers were two actors who could entertain with 5(?) blues performers who couldn’t act worth a lick.
155. Billy - July 14th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Come on, The Lone Rangers were awesome. Any “band” with Steve Buscemi, Brendan Fraser, and Adam Sandler is off the chain. Airheads cast also included a member of the #1 band on this list, Michael McKean.

trojan_man: Happy Days had an entire episdode about Richie knowing the lead singer from Johnny Fish and the Fins. The band was played by Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids who also played Herbie and the Heartbeats in American Graffiti. At the end of the episode they perform Young Blood; unfortunately, the scene is usually cut out for more commericials.

Vera Lynn! Listen up girl!
Your posts are *NOT INANE*.
You are an intelligent, warm and caring woman. I’ve read your posts. I’ve noticed an urgent hunger for more knowledge, which only means that you’re much, much smarter than you give yourself credit for. You’re certainly add a lot of heart and enthusiasm to the posts, as well as information.
No one here cares one whit about those numbers…this is a conversation, not a competition!
I could give you a short (very, very short) list of inane posters…but I won’t, and never will, because they may change their ways and become perfectly normal people…but you, Vera Lynn, are so sweet and dear.
Give yourself a pat on the back.
Hey! You predicted Spanner and I would have fun, didn’t you? And just see how right you were!

I don’t think anyone mentioned ‘The Commitments’, ‘Hard Core Logo’, ‘The Pinheads’, or my personal favorite ‘The Dregs of Humanity’. Maybe a second part is needed to the list? And maybe a “Worst 10″? Lots of suggestions out there that could fit into both categories.

165. Buster - July 14th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
DETHKLOK!?!?!?! Where are they?!?!?! I don’t see them jfrater?!?!?!?
I dunno, I feel they should get a spot only because, y’know, they have the best selling death metal album of all time…. And they are fictional too. They even go on tour, I’m sure many of these never went on tour. Just saw them for myself, live on July 4th.
If you had the most brutal fictional bands listed they would have to be number one. They’re f’n brutal.

Janus: The “5, 6, 7, 8’s” are a real band. In fact, the “hoo-hoo, hoo hoo hoo!” song they are most famous for is actually the song Quentin heard in a gift shop at the airport in Tokyo when he first discovered them.
168. Bella - July 14th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
What about Hard Core Logo?!? They should be #2.
Lead by Hugh Dillon, the lead singer of the now broken up Headstones, his new band is called the Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir. The other three members are actors- Callum Keith Rennie (guitar), John Pyper-Ferguson (bass), and Bernie Coulson (drums). They actually meshed so well that when they were recording a performance for the movie, people came in off of the street asking who the kick ass punk band was.
169. Limoncito - July 14th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Not a band but I think Lily Chou Chou should be mention.
170. astraya - July 14th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
SlickWilly @149: Apu’s real name is Nahasapeemapetilon (did you type that from memory, or did you look it up? I just copied from your post), but for some reason in that episode he took the “stage name” of de Beaumarchais.

178. robneiderman - July 14th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Wow, there sure are a lot of fictional bands!
I’d like to personally thank ScottyBGood for mentioning Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp. I’ve been trying to remember the name of that show for years! No one I know has any idea what I’m talking about!
Now if anyone can help me remember the short-lived cartoon from the late 80’s with the cowboys in space, with the robot horse and the evil skeleton cowboy, that’d be awesome!
179. perun99 - July 15th, 2008 at 5:25 am

189. Spanner in the works - July 15th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
ralphboy69,
They did, it is pointed out and explained somewhere up above you.
I almost came in then, because somewhere in another list I came up with supposing Apu as a cricket player when he lived in India (it was for the Sportsmen turned Actors list). I envisage him as a typical excellent Indian slow spin bowler, but coming in well down the batting order. However, it hardly seems fair on any commentator to have been forced to say, “And Nahasapeemapetilon has just made a beautiful square cut to the boundary for four runs.”

I don’t know whether anyone above has covered this, and I’m too lazy to read through it all again.
Today, by chance, our open channel showed a Simpsons’ episode
we hadn’t seen before, which opens with Bart and Millhouse going to a Spinal Tap gig in Springfield.
It occurred to me. Does this make Spinal Tap the first DOUBLE ficitious bamd?

SlickWilly (149) ralphyboy69 (188) et al.
There are two apparent “errors” in the B-Sharps paragraph but actually neither is an actual error. They are both due to the numerous Beatles references in that episode. (Even the name The B-Sharps is a joke. As in the opposite of the Beatles (Be-dulls).).
1. In the episode in question “Moe’s Tavern” is rechristened as “Moe’s Cavern” after a bar The Beatles frequently played early in their careers.
2. In the episode Apu changes his name from Nahasapeemapetilon to de Beaumarchais. This mirrors Richard Starkey chaning his name to Ringo Starr.

Oh, I hate to admit this, but a number of really *nasty* puns just exploded into my brain.
Drat you smashprol, I was being soooo good!

Thanks. New deep-level fun to be dredged from that episode next time it comes around on our open channel (where they play The Simpsons and Futurama virtually on a loop, even if anything recent takes a while to reach us).
Question: did you unearth that recondite info. yourself, or is it second-hand? I got as far as seeing broad similarities between the two band names: both about the same length and beginning with ‘B’: both double-meaning puns. Even though I do play around with word sounds, it wouldn’t have occurred to me to transmogrify Beatles to Be-dulls. That’s Times crossword-level stuff, and with a crossword you are in a ‘clue looking for answer’ situation. Evening knowing about The Cavern, I’d have needed to watching with the senses of a hawk to pick that one up. The Apu/Ringo one wouldn’t occur to me if I lived to 1000! After all, Ringo’s aka is pretty similar to his ‘natural’ name.

Eddie and the Cruisers is music by John Cafferty and the beaver Brown Band, not Jackson Browne. I love Eddie…
John Cafferty is still touring!

Sadness. Billy and the Boingers is missing (formerly known as Deathtöngue - from the amazing Bloom County by Berke Breathed). I’d second Dingoes ate My Baby, too.

Anyone remember a horrible show from the 90’s called “The Heights” about a band of the same name? They actually had a radio semi-hit with “How Do You Talk To An Angel?”

The Rutles! Beatles rip off band, they actually had some great music.
What group was Jack Black in from the John Cusack film? Sonic Death Monkeys or something? Did a great version of ‘Let’s Get It On’.
That Metalocolypse band rips, whatever their name is. Deathlock or something?
That band that was playing in the club during Repo Man and Emilio Estevez says ‘I can’t believe that I used to like these guys’. But that was a real band (punk band), but for the film they were a cheesy lounge band.
The band from Rock Star with Mark Walberg!!!!!!!!! They rocked hard, son!!!
And last but not least, Wyld Stallions. WYLD STALLIONS!!!

If anyone here’s from Israel - Red Band should be added to the list.
(A new show about a reunion of a fictional band. It’s great.)

To cribbage427(#199): That explains why it doesn’t sound like Jackson Browne. The (idiot) movie reviewer’s poor memory must have somehow put “John Cafferty” and “Brown” together and got Jackson Browne. Then I went and repeated his mistake.

Definately need the WYLD STALLYONS. I mean come on, Bill S. Preston Esq. And Ted Theodore Logan. God gave Rock and Roll to You. great song.

Wyld Stallyns (yup, y’s all the way) deserved a spot in there, for sure.
And I echo the sentiments of many in saying that so should Steel Dragon.
In fact, as lame as it may sound, I’m a classic rock DJ, and we toss in a few SD tunes all the time, especially during our “Hairway to 7″ feature.
GIMME BLOOD POLLUTIOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

O my gosh!!!! The B-Sharps That is so sweet! They sure use the simpsons a lot on this website. I love it! Although I wish they had the band on the simpsons like Inc sync or the backstreet boys with bart, nelson, ralph, and milhouse on here too. They were a great fictional band. They sounded cool too!
215. Kara - August 24th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Great list! But I agree the Wyld Stallyns should be included - they save humanity and hold the ultimate truth!
