Top 10 Propaganda Videos
Published on July 30, 2007 - 48 Comments
Propaganda has been with us for a long time but it was not until the two wars that it became such a useful tool in control of the opinions of the people. This list shows ten of the best examples of propaganda available on the Internet including anti-porn, anti-homosexual, and anti-drugs.
1. Anti Pornography Propaganda
Produced by the Citizens for Decent Literature, this is an amusing propaganda film from 1965 entitled Perversion for Profit. It is presented by George Putnam - “Outstanding News Reporter”. It demonstrates certain photographs and points out that they appeal to “the sodomists” and others with “overtones of bestiality”.
2. Anti LSD Propaganda
This is another film from the 1960s but this one focuses on LSD. The main character describes her first time using LSD and goes on to talk about eating a hotdog that has a face and screams when she tries to bite it. She tried the drug because she was “pretty jacked-up on marijuana”. This is very cool, man.
3. Anti Homosexual Propaganda
Boys Beware! is the title of this 1959 anti homosexual propaganda film. In the picture we see the cunning wiles of the homosexualist focusing on the case of little Jimmy Barnes who thumbs a ride and ends up in hot water after the “nice man” Ralph picks him up. This film contains some great lines like “all homosexuals are not passive; some resort to violence”. After seeing this film you will think twice about hitching a ride!
4. Pro Tax Propaganda
From 1943, this film uses Donald duck and his friends to explain why we must pay income tax to do our duty for the country. This is the first example here of propaganda being aimed at children with more of an eye on the future. Did it work do you think? One of the nice quotes from this film:
“[…] every American should pay his or her income tax, gladly and proudly”.
5. Anti Piracy Propaganda
Now for a brief dip into some more recent propaganda. We have all seen anti-piracy clips at the cinema and the begining of DVDs, but this video is a testament to how long the anti piracy brigade has been active. This 1992 video features a rapper singing “Don’t copy the floppy”. This video was produced by the Software Publishers Association.
6. Anti American Propaganda
This is the most recent example of propaganda in the list. It is a film by Barry McNamara (who is apparently a political thinker), and it is speaking against US domination of the world. The most interesting thing about this one is the style of animation - it could have been made by a propagandist from Soviet Russia. It speaks of the neoconservative manifesto to bring about a New American Century.
7. Nazi Propaganda
The Nazis were famous for propaganda during the wartime. This video shows Adolf Hitler speaking to the youth of Germany. He asks them to embrace all things German so that in the future there will be no ranks or classes. At one point he says “We want this people to be peace loving” - yeah right. The crowd goes wild whenever Hitler stops talking.
8. Communist Propaganda
In this clip we see a very common theme in Communist propaganda - displays of power. The Chinese still do it, the North Koreans do it, and the Soviets practically invented it. This film is taken from Victory Day and shows a military parade in Moscow in 1945. The music in the background is a rather stirring rendition of the Soviet Union’s National Anthem.
9. Anti Communist Propaganda
This is a 1952 American propaganda film by Coronet International Films. It is amusing how it points out that you are paying the highest taxes in history because of Communism. The film describes the origin of communism with Karl Marx. It is interesting how the commentator also speaks out against the Tsar and even insinuates that the communists were right to up-rise against him.
10. Anti Nazi Propaganda
This is Another Disney produced cartoon propaganda film entitled Hitler’s Children, Education for Death. The film uses very typical propaganda images and sounds - the Nazi’s tower over the people who behave as if they are terrified. This one really just has to be seen to be believed.

“…and again, the breast fetish”
“The pleasure of pain. The worship of the whip.”
Oh dear the anti-porn psa was awesome. I love the slight quavering of the guy’s voice when he gets through a particularly “stimulating” segment. You just know he’s wearing a rubber thong under his suit. You just know it.
2. jfrater - August 1st, 2007 at 9:39 pm
hehe - it is my favourite of the lot too. Imagine what those people would think if they were transferred to now with all the porn on the net!
3. mooster - August 7th, 2007 at 9:06 am
I prefer the anti-LSD film. How could you not want to try acid after watching that?
4. jfrater - August 7th, 2007 at 9:13 am
mooster: I wonder if those films had that effect on the youth of its day. I remember seeing a movie from the 1960s which was blatant anti-marijuana propaganda. I suppose we can laugh but we should remember that many of the films now contain propaganda - it is just more cleverly hidden.
5. Sandra - August 8th, 2007 at 11:12 am
the anti LSD one has the same tone as if it’s from the book Go Ask Alice. Just completely trippy. Its a diary of a teenage girl in the hippy era, and she does a lot of drugs and is in and out of mental institutions. A lot of times it doesnt make any sense, but she usually wrote the diary entries when she was coming off of highs as far as i could tell. Half of it just her describing her acid trips from what i remember. Good book though, in a really weird way.
6. Sandra - August 8th, 2007 at 11:14 am
Oh yeah, i love the anti porn! 75-90% of it ends up in the hands of our children! I think he just pulled those statistics out of his butt.
7. jfrater - August 8th, 2007 at 12:12 pm
Sandra: I have heard of the book but never read it - is it worth a read do you think? And I totally agree about the porn one - talk about scare tactics.
8. Sandra - August 8th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Yeah, the book is definitely worth a read. Kinda hard to follow cause its an actual diary and never goes into who anybody is or her relationship with them. Its got some freaky entries in it about her having a cut on her and she thinks it has maggots and bugs breeding in it. Just the way she described it is, ew. Its only like 150 pages though, so you could be finished with it in 1 night.
9. jfrater - August 8th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Sandra: thanks for the review - I will add it to my Amazon wishlist!
10. cassie - August 14th, 2007 at 3:47 am

LOL JIMMY BARNES.
16. Crimanon - August 17th, 2007 at 12:55 am
I remember back in High school history, Our teacher played an animated movie about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as told by a young survivor. It’s unfortunate that it’s not here, being as it was Extremely disturbing, and for some people I knew it was actually… life changing.
17. jfrater - August 17th, 2007 at 9:07 am
Crimanon: Was it propaganda in favour of dropping the bomb? I didn’t see anything like that on my search - it would be interesting if someone could fine a copy.
18. Crimanon - August 18th, 2007 at 5:36 am
JF: It was a post-”drop” propaganda animation directed at children to create an anti-American sentiment. The young boy, I believe, was a citizen of Hiroshima. Unfortunately, even after about two hours of searching for what I thoughht would be a Very standout video, all I am left with is an aching back, and a swimming feeling in my brain. I’ll keep searching. How do you find the strength to do this all of the time?
19. jfrater - August 18th, 2007 at 8:40 am
Crimanon - oh I see - that is interesting. I will keep my eyes out in case I come across it. I find the strength to do this because of the great comments people leave - showing their appreciation
20. Dod - August 28th, 2007 at 3:39 am
They left out Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”.
21. jfrater - August 28th, 2007 at 3:43 am
Dod: Adding that would certainly have caused some controversy in the comments
22. sakul - September 12th, 2007 at 11:54 am
Uh, you missed the entire line up of Fox News…
23. sakul - September 12th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Also, what about reefer madness?
24. jfrater - September 12th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
sakul: I thought the LSD one was a good representative for drugs
25. the midnight knight - September 14th, 2007 at 9:59 pm
You need to add Reefer Madness to that list. There is a musical based on the that propaganda film. A musical.
26. SoCal Tom - October 2nd, 2007 at 12:16 pm
“Reefer Madness” and “Marijuana - Weed With Roots In Hell” were two of the anti-weed propaganda films of the fifties. There was another in the same vein called “Cocaine Fiends” from about the same era.
Suncoast carried a package of those types of films, usually found in the “Horror” section. It contained 20 movies, and sold for less than $10 (US).
And for the anti-porno film, George Putnam was a Los Angeles TV anchorman and radio commentator for quite a few years. He passed away not too long ago. He will be missed only by his fans.
27. Peter - October 19th, 2007 at 8:20 am
I wish George Putnam was still with us; that mellifluous voice of his would be fantastic for Viagra ads. And he was way ahead of the curve in equating body-building with homo-eroticism. Most of us wouldn’t make that connection until “Rocky III” and “Commando” came out.
And I’m with ‘Michael’… Putnam was definitely getting a profound sense of arousal discussing the S&M stuff at the end.
28. tyro - November 8th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
That porno propaganda video had me laughing my ass off. Being a member of the BDSM scene myself, I found the end particularly funny.
I remember seeing that Disney video about Nazis a while back–scared the crap out of me. It’s just…creepy. I do remember that there’s also a short Disney cartoon in which Donald is a Nazi recruit, although for the life of me I have no idea what it’s called. I’m pretty sure the rotten.com library has an entry on it, though.
And if you value your faith in humanity, for the love of all things sane, don’t read the comments at youtube for the Boys Beware video!
29. Sarah - November 10th, 2007 at 8:34 pm
i have seen the hotdog LSD one…funny and creepy at the same time…Im never gunna do drugs lol
30. aplspud - November 16th, 2007 at 7:39 pm
My favorite part of the pornography film was just how little the black tape actually covers. And what are the lustiest of lusty animals? Rabbits maybe? Well, the Nazis will hunt them down for sure!
31. heatherrrr. - December 5th, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Crimanon -
i know the cartoon about the hiroshima bombings you’re talking about - it’s called barefoot gen.
we had to watch it for my writing/culture class about asian-americans. i found it incredibly disturbing.
32. Crimanon - December 9th, 2007 at 1:07 am
that looks like it, thank you heatherrrr. Jamie!!! Check this out!
33. ABC - December 9th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
The video titled “6. Anti American Propaganda” is in actuality “anti-fascist argumentation”. No-one opposes the USA as a country, but rather the right-wing fascist minority that has been in office for quite a while now. Instead of dubbing any opposition as “anti-american”, you should use reason and logic to determine whether the points made are valid, or not. Propaganda appeals to feelings, faith and beliefs; argumentation to logic, reason and a sense of what is true.
34. emily - December 16th, 2007 at 10:22 am
why was the kid in #3 put on probation?
35. chinup - December 28th, 2007 at 9:30 am
ABC how can you possibly say that the Anti-American video isn’t propaganda. It’s presenting one side in a sensational manner therefore it is propaganda. “Whose going be next North Korea, France the UK. None of us really matter to them.” I for one think that’s a very well reasoned and valid point.
36. Bobboo - January 4th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Many of those “porno” magazines I owned! Man, they helped me get through the awkward age of adolesence. Had they not been available I’d probably raped the local girls volleyball team while they were on the court!
37. Hemanth - January 5th, 2008 at 7:55 am
Ha! Nice sound effects in the LSD video. Notice how the video doesnt talk about anything other that the strang exeperience? I bet it made a lot of people want to try some stuff!
Also, you got to love the face of the hot dog, and to think it had 7 kids..
38. squid vicious - January 7th, 2008 at 8:06 am
Shouldn’t M. Moores’ work be at the top of this list?
39. jfrater - January 7th, 2008 at 9:38 am
squid vicious: if the list were extended to 15 you might find him there, in the company of Mr Gore
40. Shakespeare’s Girl - January 7th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
tyro- the one with Donald as a Nazi is Der Furher’s Face, which also spawned the song of the same name. Interestingly, it reuses the “Pink Elephants” sequence from Dumbo, slightly reanimated to fit the context.
I personally would have put Education For Death farther up the list, I saw it recently for the first time and it scared me…
It’s amazing how well the Disney animators could portray humans, yet still have it look like a cartoon. And it’s sort of scary how much like Wendy from Peter Pan that mother looks.
41. Benji - January 26th, 2008 at 12:18 am
I’d just like to say (if it hasn’t been said already) that many Americans are terrified by the Bush administration. I personally did not vote for him, and refuse to call him my president. I agree that we as a nation have become far too grandiose; a look at our national debt (not to mention our trade debt!) shows just how slyly our government has been operating. I try to do my part, but it’s difficult: what’s missing from this piece is a look at modern US propeganda.
For many Americans, the nightly news gives our sense of the world (not me, thank you.) It’s tailored to look as though the ‘world’ supports ‘our’ war on ‘terror’, and daily a country is dropped ever so silently from that list. Though we should be a neutral country, being a ’superpower’ (more like a terrorist force to be reckoned with,) we denounce countries like Canada and France who just want to stay OUT of it. Good Idea, if you ask me.
I’m very upset that countries view US citizens as hate-mongering, war-like people; most of us don’t want a part of what’s happening. Bush’s approval ratings are the worst ever seen during a presidential term. And, although he shouldn’t be allowed such power, his reach is far beyond what was ever expected (half of his initial supporters are regretful.)
I think the Anti-US (should we say American? I mean, Canada, Mexico and the whole of South America are pissed off enough) propeganda is well deserved. We’re trying though. This term’s candidates are pretty fair .. doesn’t say much, but at least we’ll be out of the Bush fiasco.
Oh — as ‘proof’: I AM an American, a formerly proud one, living in Gresham, Oregon, US. I’d give my address, but I’ve already had a noise complaint in my complex .. I don’t need to be fire-bombed by evangelical extremists. .. that’s a whole OTHER issue.
42. Marvel9280 - February 22nd, 2008 at 12:26 am
Wait, so Donald’s good side is Uncle Scrooge, and his bad side is… Hitler?
This paints the Carl Barks works in a WHOLE new philosophical light.
43. George - March 23rd, 2008 at 2:04 pm
how about this one:
PRO - AMERICAN PROPAGANDA
44. gbear - March 27th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
So, I guess the anti-homosexual one teaches us that 1. people in the 50’s were verynaieve and 2. that in the 50’s all homosexual men dressed in suits.

HAHAH one never knows when the homosexual is about, one may never know he is “mentally ill”!!
And why is the “violent” homosexual wearing a tux? :S
47. robertojuanito - June 23rd, 2008 at 10:21 am
these are interesting to watch years and years later.
I might also suggest “I am Cuba” it’s an anti imperialism film shot in 1964
48. Micowoco - July 11th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
No. 6 is pretty accurate analysis, with neat El Lissitzky - inspired graphics.
