In the last decade the pitbull was seen as the badest, meanest breed of dog. Wrong! There are dogs that will wipe the floor with any breed of pitbull you can get. But that’s not the point here. A 30 kgs pitbull can be easily put down by a man who doesn’t fear dogs… but how about a 100 kg Caucasian Shepherd? So, if you want your home defended, here is a list of the Top 10 Badass guard dogs.
10. The German Shepherd
This breed has a personality marked by direct, fearless willingness to protect human children. The dog must be approachable, quietly standing its ground and showing confidence and willingness to meet overtures without itself making them. It is poised, but when the occasion demands, eager and alert; both fit and willing to serve in its capacity as a companion and watchdog.
9. Doberman Pinscher
Doberman Pinschers are, in general, a gentle, loyal, loving, and highly intelligent breed. Although there is variation in temperament, a typical pet Doberman attacks only if it believes that it, its property, or its family are in danger. According to the US Centers for Disease Control, the Doberman Pinscher is less frequently involved in attacks on humans resulting in fatalities than several other dog breeds such as pit bulls, because they can be trained to restrain an unwelcome intruder but not kill him. The breed was used extensively by the U.S. Marines in World War II, and 25 Marine War Dogs died in the Battle of Guam in 1944: there is a memorial in Guam in honor of these Doberman Pinschers
8. Rottweiler
In the hands of a responsible owner, a well-trained and socialized Rottweiler can be a reliable, alert dog and a loving companion. However, any poorly trained dog can become a danger in the wrong circumstances. The Rottweiler is a steady dog with a self-assured nature, but early socialization and exposure to as many new people, animals, and situations as possible are very important in developing these qualities. The Rottweiler also has a natural tendency to assert dominance if not properly trained. Rottweilers’ large size and strength make this an important point to consider: an untrained, poorly trained, or abused Rottweiler can learn to be extremely aggressive and destructive.
7. Pyrenean Mountain Dog
The Great Pyrenees (Pyrenean Mountain Dog) is a capable and imposing guardian, devoted to his family, and very wary of strangers. Males weigh in at about 100-160 pounds (45-73 kilograms), and when not provoked it is calm and somewhat serious. Courageous, very loyal, and obedient, devoted to family even if self-sacrifice is required. During World War II the dogs were used to haul artillery over the Pyreneean Mountain range to and from Spain and France.
6. Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a large, muscular, tricolour (black, rust, and white; typically with a white blaze) dog. Males should weigh around 60 – 70 kg the height is 65 – 72 cm at the shoulders. Swissies have a very strong pack instinct. They are protective of their family and training is important for them to learn their place. They want the pack to be together and gets distressed when a member wanders off.
5. The Moscow Watchdog
After World War II, breeders in Moscow wanted to create a watchdog that would be particularly receptive to spoken orders. They took the Caucasian Ovtcharka (caucasian shepherd) – possessing wariness and ferocity, and the Saint Bernard – a larger breed with a gentle temperament, and now, over fifty years later, the Moscow Watchdog possesses the mental and physical attributes desired by the original breeders.
4. Boerboel
The Boerboel, the only breed of dog solely and specifically bred to defend the homestead. The dog should give the overall impression of immense substance, strength, power, and physical ability, and should be able to more than amply demonstrate this in his day to day work. Boerboels are a very dominant but intelligent breed, with a strong watchdog instinct. They are self-assured and fearless, but responsive to the needs of the family displaying an intuitive ability to sense if the family is in danger. Like other large dogs with a strong guard instinct, the Boerboel needs to be watched around strangers always, and introduced to friends and other dogs early on to avoid aggression, and like all dogs should never be left with young children unattended.
3. Argentinian Mastiff
The Dogo Argentino or argentinian mastiff, is a large, muscular and athletic white-coated dog with an unusual history. They are excessively tolerant of children due to their high pain tolerance, derived from selective breeding to be big game hunters. They are protective of what they perceive as their territory and will guard it without fear against any intruder. The minimum height for the male is 62Â cm (24.3Â inches).
2. Cane Corso
The Cane Corso is a medium-large guard dog native to Southern Italy. Its stable temperament and powerful body make him particularly valued as a guard dog and protection dog. Traditionally, rural Southern Italy has always used this rustic type of dog for the hunting of big game and for guard and protection work. These dogs were known under various regional names: Vucciuriscu (or Bucciuriscu) in Sicily, Cane della masseria in Puglia, Cane da Macellaio (Butchers Dog). The official FCI standard calls for dogs to stand from 60-68 centimeters at the withers (23.6-26.7 inches).
1. Caucasian Shepherd
I’m a dog owner and breeder, and I tell you, if you have a place (house, yard, facility) to protect, This is the dog you need. Excessive softness or vicious temperaments are considered serious faults for the breed some say, but if you really want the bigest, meanest dog around, he’s the one. This breed is very rustic and adapts quickly to every climate. The Caucasian Shepherd is well adjusted and active. However, he is highly suspicious of strangers, and he may become aggressive.
Bonus Dog: The Wolfdog
The Wolfdog. Half wolf, half some large shepherd breed. Vicious, hard to train, eats a lot, not very a very loving pet, but who would dare break into your home when you got wolves in the back yard? The dog pictured above is a Wolf-German Shepherd cross.

hi all, im new on this side. and have yust read all your comments and i most aggre to tosa inu. tosa`s was fighting dogs centurys before the pit bull was eable to walk.. The tosa also have the size to scar off all thiefs
take a look at this im glad im not on the wrong side of a tosa…
also akita`s bobel, corsa eng mastiff and great dane are some nice dogs..
awwww i love wolf dogs i have had 4 dogs from that list i had a rottii, gremen shepherd (white),gerater swiss moutin dog, and a wolf dog and they are all great dogs i love big dogs they are great watch dogs and are so playfull no matter how old they get.
The Kangal Dog should be number one, no one would enter a house if they saw it
German Shepherds shouldnt be in the list, they were used in war to guard stock, however stock was always being stollen, the allies replaced them with Maremma’s and all the problems went away, if this is a site about guard dogs then why is the German Shepherd in it, and army Shepherds are a bit bigger and angrier than the average household one
Aren’t pitbulls more dangerous than rottweilers
I reviewed this list and I seen the AKITA mentioned only about 3 times. I have 2 akitas which I have in K9 obedience training these dogs are very good guard dogs. First, akitas doesn’t bark for nothing if an akita is barking something is wrong time to investigate. Second, akitas are very loyal and devoted to there family they’re not the kind of dog you have chain to a tree all day. Third, akitas have a thick coat something a guard dog should have it’ll be much harder to penetrate a akitas coat than a dog with a short coat. You don’t want a guard dog that barks at anything you want a guard dog that barks at everything akitas will do that. They don’t bark because they’re hungry or because there’s a squirrel in the tree but trust me an akita will let you know if something is near its family they’ll know before you know. If you a person that loves dogs that’ll make your dog part of your family and feed your dog good healty balance meals and work that dog daily talk to your dog like it’s one of your kids the akita is the dog for you and it’ll make sure when the man of the house is gone he’ll protect the home. But if you want a vicious killer angry man eater that’s been tied to a tree all it’s life and eats the scraps its owner give him then you better get you a shotgun because the minute you let that dog off that chain it’s a mad animal and it’s going to bite anything in sight even its owners I don’t care what kind of dog it is. That’s not a guard dog. WE LOVE OUR AKITAS AND THEY LOVE US TOO…if you don’t belive me come to my home and find out the hard way.
avi, if an intruder came into the house i think a rottie would have more chance of stopping him than a pit, due to size mainly, the best guard dogs are lsg dogs, they start guarding at 3 months and dont need to be taught, they will bond with anything and give their lives for what their guarding without hesitation
There’s an important difference between a guard dog and a watch dog. My 5lb chihuahua makes the perfect watch dog- she yaps her pea-sized head off if a someone even dares to walk up my driveway. But she wouldn’t be a great guard dog- her bite wouldn’t even break the skin.
i have a rajapalayam it is an indian breed to hunt most of you wont haer ed about this dog because it is not recongised by the major kennels its recongised by kci (kennels club of india) it is 36 inch high and has locking jaws white with pink nose please seee about this breed in google.com i had a rajapalayam and a 2 year old rotwiller he was a show dog my rajapalayam killed him because my rot willer took his bone if you intrested about this indian breed feel free to contact me on any time to buy or ask any doutts he will tore up those who all there in my sight to hunt please call me 9941209635
this list is incorrect the strongest dog is the rottweiler it has the greatest bite force is bulk and muscular and is bred for defense.
My next door neighbour had a rottie, she got robbed, had the whole house emptied out, furniture, everything. Any way, all the intruders had to do was throw a fresh bone and that occupied the dog the whole time. Rotties for starters arnt the strongest and obviously their guarding instinct isnt that great. My Maremma wont even take a steak from a visitor in the house even if we have accepted them, however if that person gives his family the steak and they give it to him he will accept it. And im telling you now a Maremma is much stronger than a rottie and out of the stories ive heard have killed them in seconds.
To badass12 – the Caucasian Mountain dog’s bite hasn’t even been measured so the Rot does not have the most serious bite in existence yet it does known to man. A guard dog of the utmost seriousness is EXTREMELY wary of strangers where a trained Rot is actually quite friendly and sociable. The CMD is not. Its nature is supposed to be suspicious and defensive. Where the Rot is aggressive if threatened or treated improperly, the CMD is purely defensive meaning if you get too close it can strike where a Rot, again, can be VERY sociable and likeable. That’s the problem, you HAVE to socialize the Rott as do the CMD, but the more socialized the Rott become the friendlier he is, where the CMD retains its indpendent and almost disregard for strangers. THAT is a guard dog if you have something to serious to guard.
deviljin is correst, the rottie, german shepherd etc, are all reasonably sociable dogs, the cmd i spose is like lsg dogs, very independent and nothing can take their attention away from guarding, its 2000 years worth of breeding to make them the perfect guardian dog. Thats why they will give their life for you, and guard you from the biggest animals like bears to the smallest, like flys.
what about bullmastiffs they can easliy over power a apbt
Allan – Here’s the thing. Pitbulls are not the best guard or fighting dog and yet a lot of people seem to make comparisons to the apbt as if it is a measuring stick. As for bullmastiffs – you can’t make that statement because pits’ size vary due to bad breeding. I’ve seen regular pits and I’ve seen a pit that seemed to have been mixed with a Great Dane or another big dog (hate to see someone cross breed a Kangal with pit – what a sight that would be). It was gigantic. Then you have that American bully breed which looks like a pit on steriods. Yes, a mastiff can overpower an apbt, but an apbt would probably win because it has a higher pain tolerance. It’s not immune to pain, but its toleration is higher.
Matty- This is what i think. Pitbulls are dangerous strong dogs, but i do have an alsation and he is a great guard dog aswell as a family pet, he weighs about 43kg and is huge, we bought him from the dogs home, and we think he was used as a pub dog, but he did live with 9 kids, belive it or not! However, if you look at some of the other dogs like, a doberman or a rotweiler they shouldn’t come above a GSD because i don’t think they are as strond and powerfull, even still it depends on the dogs mood, not just the breed. A couple of months back my dog had a viscious fight with a fully grown rotweiler, it beat the rotweiler but the other owner and us, as a family decided not to take it any further and it was dead in the water, so i think those rankings are wrong, and it depends on the dogs mood.
First off no breed can wipe the floor with an american pit bull. A tosa Inu weighing up to 240 pounds or a bully kuta which is the most dangerous dog on earth would give the pit bull a challange. Fila are the prob the best guard dogs because they are VERY suspicous of strangers. But pit bulls; tosa inu, dogo argentino, dogo presca and bully kutas could devour any breed.
Game Pits are very far and in between so this comment is just crazy. Bully Kutta and Tosa Inu both can easily reach 70+kg or larger and can just lay on the Pit and tire it out. They have far more powerful jaws and are just superior in most every way.
Shelby – unless you’ve done some illegal dogfighting, I’m betting you’re just a fan of the pit, because we cannot determine who would win. The Tosa Inu is the best fighting dog of Japan (Japan actually have a lot of rules for the dogs to follow). A pitbull would be engulfed by an aggressive, dogfighting experienced Kangal and would not live to see another day against a Caucasian Mountain Dog. Due to the sagging protective skin beneath the neck of a Dogo Argentino (something pits usually go for), the pit would lose to it as well. Regardless of how bad their bites are, the pit is NOT the most deadliest fighting dog as it is the most popular fighting dog worldwide.
I know a pit is not the deadliest. But it would not be an easy match for any breed. CO are pretty scary dogs. Best friend has one and I wont go near it..lol…weighs around 180. How do u think a CO would fair against a presca or dogo?
Shelby – If you’re talking about Causcasian Owtcharka, then I would love to know what your friend has that needed THAT type of protection (b/c we have to make sure bad owners don’t force others to endorse the BSL law worldwide; I have a staffy and dobe and would probably move than give them up). And you are smart not to go near it b/c they are not people dog and not supposed to be. You know, despite the serious bite of a pit or a dogo, it also depends on how the dog attacks, head size, its quickness to latch on to its enemy, its personality and its nature. As much as I want to be biased and say the Dogo is the best(I so want one), the CO is known for defending off wolves. In fact, the CO will hide itself in the midst of sheeps (like the Komondor) and can take on more than one predator at a time. Indpendent dogs are usually better than dogs with strong pack-instincts like the Dogo b/c their personality is stronger. As for the Dogo Presa Canario, I would still have to go with the CO because of its highly independent, ant-social nature, its heavy size (which would knock down any dog in a clash, not to mention, they stand six feet on hind legs), and naturally defensive personality. Personality plays a big part in dogs. However, a dog can always get lucky if they get a grip on the neck (given there’s no excessive skin like the Dogo).
It seems the CO is like the majority of the live stock guardian dogs with relation to the protection of their flock. Maremmas, which is what i own, generally will run up with their tails between the legs to make out their scared. They will do this a few times and then they will suddently body slam their opponents and proceed to kill them, whether its a wolf or a bear, this is only if intimidation does not work and their opponents are obviously wanting to fight. These dogs are very independent as they need to make their own decisions and in some instances need to learn to also live off the land. They are independent as they are controlling hundreds of sheep, goats, etc at a time, they are smarter than most dogs, but dont rank up the top because they dont take orders, which is what the tests are made up of. They make their own decisions, they will consider their masters decision, however their guardian instinct of 2000 years takes over.
Matty, has i have previously posted, german shepherds are useless compared to many other dogs and dont deserve to even be on this list. The allies used to them to guard stock in the war and they eventually had to change them to Maremmas as all the stock was being stolen. Also their not that tough or good at guarding, six fully grown army german shepherds were left to guard a few italian prisoners with a maremma, in the morning the prisoners had escaped, the maremma was asleep and the 6 german shepherds were dead. However you put it their are dozens of breeds that should be put before it and the doberman and rottie.
Shelby,
the thread is about the best dogs for guard duty, not “pit” fighting. If you’re into that crap, you have issues. Like I and others have mentioned before, if you have a pit that’s a badass, take him to turkey and put him against a Kangal, or to Japan and face a tosa, Pakistan and face a bully kuta or gull dong, or to afganaistan and face a Caucasian mtn dog or Central asian ovcharka. there are numerous sorry pit bulls out there owned by trash for the wrong reasons, who big tough neighborhood dogs could whip, cause I’ve heard it too many times.there’s a lady who breeds pits and is big on bsl who had a catahoula attack and kill one of her pits, and she stresses the same thing. DON’T BUY ONE OF THESE DOGS JUST CAUSE YOU WANT TO THINK YOU HAVE THE BADDEST DOG ON THE BLOCK! that’s not fair to the dog, and it can show insecurity issues on the owner’s side. get one that needs a home and you can take care of it and TRAIN it so it doesn’t end up in the news. as far as guard ability I’ve seen video of some good pits but it seems to be pretty rare, and these seemed to be larger than the standard therefore they may have been crossbred. but they wouldn’t be at the top of my list, and I like my chances against one over the much larger and specialized breeds. pits aren’t super dogs, they can;t do things better than any other dog. they don;t have locking jaws. they don;t have more biting pressure than any other breed, and they can’t whip any breed of dog, bears, mountain lions, etc. a lot of the semencic and stratton stuff is crap and yes I’ve read the books. a well bred apbt should be tenacious, deadgame, non human aggressive, but still only 30-60lbs, so it’s tough to ask them to face much larger and equally aggressive opponents. as stated though there are many sorry bred pits out there as you can see in the news, and by people talking s*&t nonsense on the internet.
willy, I love maremmas but let’s not get carried away. do you know how hard it is for a cao, kangal , maremma, or whatever to beat a large alpha wolf (mckenzie valley, etc) of 130+ lbs, let alone a big tom cougar, large black bear boar, or forget about a big grizzly? these animals fight constantly to survive. don;t mention the stupid videos of declawed, small, captive, weak, cougars put into pens with dogs either. I’ve seen those when I ordered info on dogos. I know dogs have and can beat some wolves but your big male alpha gray wolves would be tough for any dog, and your large cougar can lay a dogs entrails out quickly as could a bear with their claws. a grizzly could break a dog’s back or skull with one swipe.
Also, lay off the gsds dude. I don;t ownd one but their record speaks and CONTINUES TO SPEAK FOR ITSELF. A HQ one from the czech republic/border patrol is a damn good dog. no if they weren; they wouldn;t be used along with the malinois and dutch shephereds overwhelmingly by militaries and police forces worldwide. no need to bash one breed to make yours look better.
One breed I’m surprised that hasn’t been mentioned has been the Belgian Malinois. Those dogs are straight up bad-ass guard dogs. Crazy, high strung & they live for the bite. They’re not as big or intimidating as many of the other breeds mentioned, but don’t tangle with a Mal, odds are you will regret it!
To sgthacker – I agree. But honestly, it’s dangerous to even have a guard dog (for the average person, that is)b/c most people won’t learn how to control the dog in the event of a burglar entering your property and the dog attacks. The burglar has the right to sue you (I’ve seen it happened) for letting your “vicious” dog attack him, and to be truly evil, he might win the case and have your lovable guard dog put down.
And with the BSL spreading, if these “dangerous breeds” get into the media negatively, things could change for us who love these breeds. I’m against the BSL, but I’m for having a class or an exam required of new owners to have these dogs.
In my opinion, instead of trying to get “the baddest dog on the block” it’s best to rely on their reputation. My dobe made one guy cross the street when he walked past us, even my dobe was just relaxing. I don’t make her aggressive at all. She’s a big goofy baby, really but will attack if necessary. Best to use your own protection and have your dog warn you instead of allowing it to attack and end up losing it.
Who ever put this list together is Mentaly Challanged at Best. Get a life. Do some real Reserch. Better yet Get some hands on experiance before you go spreading missinformation.
Also. As far as the pitbull being a Guard dog, the breed was never desigend to be a guard dog. Some have had success training them to do Guard dog/protection type work. These dogs are the exeption not the rule when it comes to the breed.Yes it is possable a 120 pound rottie or Tosa or sutch can kill a 35 pound apbt but pound for pound the pitbull is hands down the ultamite canine warrior.Fact. If ya want a dog for pp get one from working stock .In just about any breed of dog bred to work you have two catigorys. Working stock vs Show/pet stock. Getting a dog bred down from working stock is way more importiant than the actual breed you choose.
You may proceed with your list, then, Big Game.
the dumb ***** who said his big bad GSD whipped a Pit is a moron.
My Male who is the sweetest dog you could ever want, would eat a GSD for dinner and ***** a hairball first thing in the morning.
A GSD is no match for any pure bred Pit with any gameness.
There is a reason why GSD were not popular with the old dog fighters back when dog fighting was legal.
I hope and prey that Pits are never considered a guard dog, the last thing Pit enthusiasts want is any kind of human aggression in Pits. Human aggression is a trait that was not bred for in Pits, and those that showed any were culled.
I agree with cedestra. so what would be your list all knowing “big game?” Again, who cares if the apbt is the “ultimate” canine warrior? you just said they aren’t good guard dogs on average, so what’s your beef? Again, who gives a freakin’ damn about dog fighting? pound for pound they’re probably the toughest dog, but guess what dude, we don;t live in a pound for pound world. hell, a jagdterrier or patterdale is probably as game as most pits, especially when you consider 15-25 lb dogs being used to hunt wild boar, badger, bobcat, etc. the amstaff is the “show” version of the apbt, we get it. but for guard duty WHICH IS WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT RIGHT? a good amstaff could suffice better than a poorly bred pit. you could have a mix breed that was large and had enough backbone to get the job done if trained properly for the average household. ABK, I mentioned the malinois several times. Great dogs.
I dont need to put together a bull***** list. Titled working dogs bred to titled working dogs, that are down from working stock produce the same. WORKING animals. You wrote this
In the last decade the pitbull was seen as the badest, meanest breed of dog.
It looks as if you are the one with a hard-on for apbt’s. I am simply deffending my breed of choise. If the subject is PP dogs then keep the word pitbull out of youre mouth. Also I was pointing out the difference between working stock and show pet stock off all breeds not just apbt Vs.am. staff. Ps anyone who wants the biggest baddest Meanest dog is a total jackass.
Ps. The fact that you even mentioned A wolf hybred proves you are a complete f’in Idiot. The wolf hybred is unstable/shy to say the least. Nobody I repete nobody that is seriously into any kind of personal protection work with dog would ever use a damn wolf hybred.
Pit bulls should NEVER be trained as guard dogs because once they bite into flesh they will not let go unless they want to. Fighting pits that bit their handlers were put down so they are not human-aggressive which you need in a guard dog. My BoBo was a typical pit bull; he loved all humans and hated all dogs. He would tolerate a female but not a male.
I agree about the big livestock guard dogs being the best, especially the Turkish Kangal. The Ovcharka is too unstable around humans but the Kangal is very gentle with children.
Excuse my English. Funny website. Even funnier people talking. I have two Kangal. A kangal is not good with kids. What are U crazy?? Kangal serious dog for work and guard not play with kids or pet dog!! I use pit bull to keep my dog train agel for wolf. I put Pitt bull in cage with my Kangol. My dog kills pittbull in 5 minutes. Also the bigger mixed pit bull stronger than pure breed pit. Pit bull cheap so easy to buy to train. Dogo Argentino not a good fighter. They give easy. Also not good guard but maybe in America with no wild animal. Dogo Argentino good pet dog
sgthacker- im just speaking from experiences other ppl have had with Maremmas. You might think you know a lot however military history shows that no one went near stock if they were used to guard it, replaced german shepherds, the 6 german shepherd story, the fact that they are now used as babysitters, goat farmers seem to think they can easily account for a black bear and the fact that their breed trait is described as a wolf slayer, and have been bred for the past 2000 years to do this task if intimidation has not worked. I havnt even heard about the cage fights with the animals youve described, apart from hearing about 3 illegal fights against pitts which the maremmas won, all ive heard about is stories from farmers.
Obviously grizzlys are out of the question for any dog, however you share a very naive opinion on wolves, i think generally the live stock guardian dogs are pretty close genetically to wolves, and are bred to kill them one on one. You have to remember maremmas are strategic fighters, their not just run up and hit.
Im not bagging german shepherds, the police force in my state uses them as well, and if i get my way i will hopefully be training them, i was merely stating their are many other dogs that should be above them. Well the allied forces seemed to think so when they replaced them with maremmas. Live stock guardian dogs are generally the best guard dogs as you can have a relationship with the dog, you can never hit the dog, their bred to give their lives for you in a second, they bred to be able to kill wolves and black bears, they dont take food off strangers and they make their own decisions and tell what their protecting where the safest place to go is.
And by strangers i dont mean blokes jumping your fence, i mean strangers that have been accepted by his owners. I had a bbq, my uncle tried to feed him a steak, he refused it, my old man took the steak and gave it to him and he accepted it. He then spent the rest of the afternoon lying next to a baby who was being fed and spent the whole time chasing a pomeranian off who was snappy against the baby due to the food. Also my border went a kid, he was stuck half way at birth but was a good dog, just a bit agro sometimes, however the maremma chased him away as well. This is what their bred to do, protect and thats why their used as flock dogs and now babysitters in the city regions.
Worst. List. Ever.
Little game, what’s your problem dude? I didn’t put this list together, so get that out’ve your head. the fact is there is no real top 10, it’s all very objective and open for discussion. I would not include, NOR DID I SAY I would use a wolf hybrid for guard duty, I would not really want one as a pet (don’t bring that crap up again I know many people own them and they do fine). You keep stating the obvious pal, anyone with half a brain knows to get a dog out’ve working stock whether it’s for ring sport, akc retriever trials, or guard duty. Do you think you’re really telling anyone here something they don’t already know? You’re not that dense are you? the list is fine, every breed mentioned out’ve good stock could do well as a guard dog here as well as several others mentioned like the malinois, maremma, etc.
Again, einstein, show you and parabellum show us your list or shut the hell up!
willie,
I think you and I are on the same page. I greatly respect and like the LGDs like the akbash, maremma, kangal, anatolian, caucasian mtn dog, central asian ovtcharka, spanish mastiff, kuvasz, etc. I still say from everything I’ve read, a large gray wolf (130+ lbs-the largest ever recorded was around 176 lbs) with their speed, ferocity, and jaw power is no walk in the park for ANY dog in a wild setting. Male black bears can approach 500lbs and are extremely powerful, so you’re asking a lot for a dog to defeat something like that. I love dogs but I don’t think they’re superheroes and I don’t believe everything I’ve read and I’ve read a great deal. Can a LGD kill an average or smaller type middle eastern/european wolf, yes. But you get my drift. If I was a farmer or livestock owner, the maremma, akbash, etc would be at the top of my list.
Now back to you gameboy. You are the one who seems very confused. You’ve been wrong on who wrote this list, and you’re wrong on me having something for pitbulls. You seem to be the apbt owner and an insecure one at that. So don’t come here cusssing and trying to act tough, boy when you obviously don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. If I was a landowner and defending my porperty you damn right I’d want the “baddest meanest dog” (and the bigger the better) like a kangal, boerboel, fila, cao, or caucasian mtn dog. You need to go back to the beginning and try and catch up, and attempt to add something to the discussion, because so far you’ve done neither. You seem to be the one that is thin-skinned and insecure about pits, and wants to own a dog that the average no-nothing joe will think is the “baddest” dog around. So come on know-it-all, if you think you can do better and share your “vast” knowledge of guard dogs with us, bring it on tough guy or just go away. You’ve said nothing to make anyone here believe yoiu know s**t about dogs, other than being a pitbull cheerleader who had his feeling hurt.
As for you “Game” blah blah blah PITBULL, just shut up. You’re an idiot who knows nothing. You’re a low-life wannabe thug dog fighter who’s trying to act tough. Pits aren’t the problem, losers who own them like you are the problem. Was the 80lb catahoula who scaled it’s eight foot fence and attacked and killed the pit a cur? He’s not a fighting breed, he’s a ranch type dog, but he sure busted your game pit bull’s ass, and all you’re doing is speculating and blowing up your average pit bull like he’s some badass or something. Ther’e plenty of sorry pits out ther, who knows you might have one?? lol If you’re so sure of him hopa plane to Pakistan, Japan, afganistan (better bring a gun) or turkey tough guy. Guys like you are a joke and make this board dumber with each of your posts. Mr. powerranger dog fighter. ha haha hell, go down to your local police station and say you want your great pit to challenge a czech border patrol import shepherd. what a joke. try and talk guard dogs and the insecure dogfighters come out’ve the closet cause the superman pitbull isn’t getting any love. pathetic
Yes killing large grey wolves is extremely difficult, the same with black bears, its tough, however luckily for both the predator and the dog it doesnt happen to often due to the dogs intimidation skills.
This is why LGD dogs are so affective and are being used against not only wolves and bears, but cougars, dingoes and wild dogs, intimidation generally wins out, however LGD dogs are still very capable of holding their own.
They do things other dogs of the same size cannot due to their strategy, a Maremma only weighs 45 odd kgs, however they are said to be as strong as a 70 kg dog, through their sheer determination to do their job. Their independent dogs and as they are very smart, they see a situation and pick an approach or fighting techique that would best suit the approach. One must remember also wolves hunt in packs, so their experience one on one may not be as great. But yes, its a risky business and one will lose a few LGD dogs to wolves.
sgthacker,
If you watch the youtube videos about Kangals going out with their flocks you’ll see that there is almost always more than on of them. I agree with you that it would be difficult for one Kangal to take down a wolf but from what I’ve read it happens a lot. As for bears and cougars, it would for sure take more than one Kangal to defeat either one of them.
Kangals are now used in Africa to protect livestock from Cheetahs and this has been very successful in keeping that endangered species alive because now the herders don’t shoot them. The dogs run them off. Livestock breeders in Yellowstone Park are also using Kangals to ward off wolves with the same success.
I would love to have a Kangal but my little suburban yard is too small. Besides, my wife is dead set against another dog.
Sgthacker, I was Wrong about you being the creator of the list. I apologize for that. As for being an expert on guard dogs. I’m far from one. I do however know more than the averge Joe when it comes to the A.P.B.T.
With that said.
You are a peice of ***** period. Total *****Tard. Are you a psycologest *****??? Got me all figgured out Huh??
WRONG DICKHEAD. LMFAO
Calling me a Wanna be Thug dogfighter, Just because I own a Pitbull and Know there history. What a Fuggin D-Bag. I do not fight dogs. Nor do I support or simpatize with dogfighters.
You typed=
Pits aren’t the problem, losers who own them like you are the problem.
Wrong Spanky!
Its *****s like you who belive anyone who owns a pitbull and is Proud of the Breed and familure with its history is a “THUG DOGFIGHTER” It’s dick heads like youreself that dont have any experiance or actual knowlidge of the apbt, yet go around slandering the breed and its owners. It’s stupid muther*****ers like the creator of this ignorant ass list. If the point is to Make a list of top guard dogs than why Ever even mention the apbt. Why start the list with a heading that starts with
“In the last decade the pitbull was seen as the badest, meanest breed of dog. Wrong! There are dogs that will wipe the floor with any breed of pitbull you can get.”
Only reason there could be is to SLANDER and Mame the immage of the all around, all american breed the great APBT!
Ps There is only one breed of A.P.B.T. within that breed are strains or familys. The AM. Staff, S.B.T. etc are not pit bull terriers.
Without Respect …. Big Game.
Theres generally no bad Pit Bulls, theres just bad owners. Look at the temperament tests, Pit Bulls score higher than the majority of breeds that are considered good family dogs. Just because someone owns a APBT doesnt mean they want to fight them, APBT are used for search and rescue, police work, and even work involving the sick. Their high pain tolerance makes them great dogs, however unfortunately its also means you get idiots who want to fight them. And not all Pit Bulls want to fight, its like not all Grey Hounds can chase. The comment made up the top about wiping the floor is irrelevant. Whats that got to do with guarding?
Why don’t you ask the person who came up with the list why they put that at the beginning you stupid, ignorant, dense piece of *****? I DIDN’T PUT THIS LIST TOGETHER SO QUIT GETTING YOUR PANTIES IN A WAD YOU MORON!!! HOW CAN ANYONE BE SO STUPID??!!! Yeah, I do have you figured out you retarded immature loser, you’re a stupid, dumb, freaking idiot. You make the whole board dumber with each of your posts. You obviously can’t spell, and your one trick pony act is getting old. How old are you, tough guy? 10-12? what a freaking joke, I’ll forget more about any breed of dog than you’ll ever know, LOSER!
APBT’s are reg’d with the ABDA and UKC association, the amstaff and american staffordshire bull terrier with the akc. Who gives a ***** you piece of crap? what does that have to do with anything? THE WHOLE POINT IS, SIMPLETON, THIS POST IS ABOUT THE 10 BEST GUARD DOGS AND WHOEVER MADE IT GAVE THIER OPINION, AND YOUR PIT WASN’T ON IT, SO DEAL W/ IT, NITWIT. QUIT CRYING LAKE A LITTLE BABY. ALSO, QUIT ACTING ALL TOUGH BEHIND YOUR MAMA’S DELL, SAYING THINGS YOU KNOW YOU WOULDN’T IN PERSON. I’M NOT FOR BSL OR DON;T GO OUT’VE MY WAY TO RUN OVER PITS, YOU STUPID *****ING IDIOT. YOU STARTED THIS *****, DUDE, SO GET OVER IT. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN TEACH ME ABOUT APBTS, POODLES, OR ANY BREED OF DOG, LITTLE BOY. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN TEACH ME PERIOD.
Go back to school, get educated, quit worrying about your superhero dog getting a bad name. Why would I have to do that? You and people like you, take care of that already? I suppose big game is a reference to your upcoming tennis match? Give us all a break, einstein. You’re making a fool out’ve yourself, boy.
Now I will start from the beginning, try and keep up, double-digit IQ. I didn’t put this list together, I don’t hate pitbulls. I don’t care for people who fight dogs, or go around talking s**T about my dog can beat up three rotts, pits have locking jaws, “gameness, blah blah” etc. People who know nothing about other breeds or countries. People who chain them up and then wonder why they attacked a child, or an old woman walking a poodle. There are WAY too many sorry ass pits being bred today for the wrong reasons, can you deny that? Sorry, unstable dogs who end up in the newspaper due to idiots for owners that are low-life undeducated morons. Just watch the news, buddy. Maybe the AUTHOR of this post doesn’t like pits, maybe he’s sick of all the hype they get from big mouths or them attacking innocent people or dogs, or maybe he’s just trying to say to the “average joe” that doesn’t know about kangals, etc and just knows about pits, rotts, etc that there are other more powerful breeds out there. Why don’t you pose your questions to the author of the post, bright guy?
I’ve read and own about every book Stratton, Jessup, Semencic, and others have written about pits, etc. A good friend of mine’s family has bred pits for nearly 50 yrs. What are you going to teach me, boy? Don’t make me laugh. I’ve seen, competed in, and judged numerous events for performance breeds of dogs over the years. I’ve dealt with protection training experts and many different breeds.
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? IF YOU DON’T LIKE THIS LIST, GIVE US YOURS, KNOW-IT-ALL? YOU’VE SAID NOTHING ON HERE TO MAKE ME THINK YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PITS OR ANY BREED OF DOG. AGAIN, WHAT MAKES YOU AN EXPERT? DID I STRIKE A NERVE? DOES THE TRUTH HURT?
go back to the freakin’ beginning if the thread and you can see where the tough guy pit bull infants started cussing and attacking everyone cause they geot their feelings hurt. Grow some thicker skin, and some nads while you’re at it. You need to face the facts that due to irresponsible owners, breeders, and sorry, unstable specimens that your dog deserves a lot of the bad press it’s getting. Clean up your own trailer park instead of attacking others. Every damn thread you come across about dogs some immature big mouth pit fan’s gotta start crap. If you want to use your pit to guard your shotgun house go ahead, or bring something useful to this conversation bring it on, otherwise shut up and go away, punk.
damn yall take these list way way to serious stop *****en these list are just for fun take one or two chill pills and relax yall wine like a bunch of females
(and im only talking to the two *****ers above me who like i said are *****en)
damn
any dog is a good dog if the owner shows it lovin
and a dog will automaticly take care of its family witch includes its master
not sure what planet some of you are on whether you have a problem with them or not pit bulls pound for pound will wipe the floor with another dog , as for people most aren`t even interested and anyone who would train them to be people aggressive is just building a time bomb! as for guard dogs any breed or cross breed big enough that has sufficient drive and trained properley can guard and guard well , breed is insignificant .
Breed is significant, you just have to look at the allied forces when they used German Shepherds as guard dogs, being army dogs they wouldve been properly trained. Anyway the dogs were useless as guard dogs and stock was being stollen. It wasnt until they replaced them with Maremma Sheepdogs that nothing was being stollen. German Shepherds are reasonably big dogs and obviosly wouldve had the correct training, just proves ‘itchy’ theories flawed, breed does matter. Maremmas are bred to give their life for what their protecting, thats the difference between the significance of the breeds.
What about the Hovawart! Thats a freaking beast, with a heart for its family
. I have to full grown males, and there are NO-body who’s entering our house without our permission. The oldest one was attacked by a dogo argentino, unprovoked, and he put him to pieces, metaphorically speaking. But still the 6 year old girl in the house could lay down on him and pull his ears – and hes loving it. Freinds who visits our house just have to say hello and get “approved” by us, and then they are ok! Also it’s a very intelligent breed wich also counts in a fight, not because we are using him for that, but when he “plays rough” with the other big male dogs in the park it really shows. try to google hovawart – if you don’t know the breed, and read about this amasing dog.
All and all I think the list was great. There are so many different breeds out there that would make good guard dogs. I think a fila brasileiro is in the top 2 or 3. Read about the breed, they do not like anyone who is a stranger. Also the South Russian are VERY protective. Rhodesian Ridgebacks… Tibeatan Mastiffs also….i mean the list can go on and on. I am actually in the process of purchasing an 8 month old male Caucasian Ovcharka that weighs 90 pounds.I own a medical distributorship with millions of dollars of equitment at my house (i work from my house) so i need that level of protection. deviljin, since you own a caucasian, please tell me what i can expect and what I need to do to prepare myself. I have grown up with dogs all my life. Had rotts, pits etc. I also own a rhodesian ridgeback. The lady said this particular dog is not very aggressive but is protective. Thanks for the help man!
Shelby from what I’ve read, the Ovckarka is second only to the Turkish Kangal as a protector, but can be a dangerous dog in the wrong(read WEAK) hands. Here is an overview of the breed. Read it closely as the CO is not an animal to be trifled with. If you don’t establish yourself as its pack leader you will be in big trouble;
http://www.molosserdogs.com/modules.php?name=Encyclopedia&op=content&tid=1224
One other thing; I’m not saying you’re weak. You have experience in handling big dogs which is good. It’s just that the Ovcharka doesn’t like humans very much. It would much rather be with its livestock than humans. And they shed a lot, like the Kangal does. Just make sure he knows who’s boss and you should be fine.
Shelby – I am terribly sorry if I misled you but I don’t own one, however, a friend of mine does and I’ve experienced being with it and talking about its history and all. In my opinion, if you’re not strong enough to handle it in case it pulls on the leash when you’re walking it (be better if you lived in an open space type place where it can get most of its exercise on its own aside from you walking it) then they may be not the best (you better have a really HIGH fence, more than six feet high). However, since you’ve grown up with dogs, I don’t doubt your experience but then again, this is an attack dog. There are levels of guard dog you should consider. There’s a watchdog, which can be good. Ive heard that the Tibetan spaniel would bark if there was an intruder, then the Tibetan Mastiff would come out. Yikes! There’s the sentry dog which patrols a lot like the Mastiff did, early in it history, however trained Mastiff usually hold down their intruders, not attack. There’s the protection dog – dobermans, german shepherds, etc. and then there’s the attack dog bred to attack, which needs a lot of socializing while young then when it becomes of a certain age, their natural instincts really kick in. Before you actually get the CO, consider some things before you do. A good CO will tolerate your friends but don’t expect it to be a teddy bear. I’ve seen some to be good with other dogs, but then again, these are dogs they grew up with. There will be some things you can’t do with this dog that other normal dogs you can do with. You should consider the Canis Panther as well. It is a HIGHLY defensive dog, but remember there are some things you can’t do with these dogs that you can with normal dogs. Also get a HIGH fence. Be better if you go with the protection dog, but it is your choice. The Dogo Argentino is a good dog as well. It is independent like a cat, but can be affectionate and works great in packs as their history states. They were bred to work in packs on the hunt.
Don’t get the Kangal dog as the previous comment suggested if you don’t have the space for him. It is a BIG dog and needs space.
Why isnt the Kangal in the list, seriously how can you have a top ten list than includes a rottie, german shepherd and a doberman, but doesnt include a Kangal. And insted of having a Pyrenese Mountain dog, you would have the Akbash or Maremma, ive read that its sometimes better to cross breed a Pyr with a Maremma to harden it up if being used as a working dog.
I agree with you, Harleymike. Practically all the bull and terrier races (American stafford, British Stafford, Pitbull, Bullterrier) are man-loving creatures – ever wondered why even the most aggressive Pitbulls never kill their tormentors? If the pitbull trained for fighting is ferocious, it is because these poor creatures are so terribly mistreateded from their earliest days on that they just go bonkers.
And, of course, all bull & terriers are heavy, muscled dogs with strong jaws who lock on their prey, so it´s no fun being bitten by them, but the thing is – they normally don´t bite. They are very slow to anger. The only time you have to watch out is when an 80-pound pit who REALLY likes you comes charging at you at 150 miles per hour, yapping with joy and very eager to jump into your arms!
Pit Bulls dont have locking jaws, they are just very determined not to let go, i wouldve tough being a Pit Bull lover you wouldve known this.
Willie’s right, pits can’t “lock” their jaws. This myth has persisted through the years because bully breeds have strong jaws, they bite with lots of force and they don’t want to let go. Most pit bull owners have “break” sticks to pry their jaws open.
I think it was the owner’s fault for the behavior of the dog that bit me. It was only a medium sized mutt, wasn’t even harmful looking. It only scratched my skin but I was so p***ed off (annoyed) because I wasn’t even in the dog’s yard, that I reported to the police. I was told that I was the third person the dog bit(attacked). Two/three years later, the dog’s owner was in the local news because he’s mentally ill and he threatened to blow up the high school. I’m glad he didn’t seek revenge for me making the police report.
Drogo, it sounds like it was the owners fault for sure, poor dog probably got put down, however if it only broke your skin why the hell would you report it to the police. That probably made it certain to be put down, all because of the owner. When in a loving family it couldve been straightened out a bit.
I don’t know what’s wrong with u all.. we are talking about GUARD DOGS,against man, other dogs, wild animals, etc…and the best for all this jobs are the flock guardian dogs,i live in Romania, and we here have 3 sheperd breeds, witch are used for defending against wolwes, linx, bear, thieves…so the best from that list (and from this world)would be an Caucasian Ovcharka, nothing stops him when he is protecting his owner,my friend has one,and when he was a puppy he was so sweet, but not he is a beast at only 9 months,u cannot aproach him at all
Pitt’s are not that good, and the stupid ideea that they lock they’r jaw
) must be really dumb to belive that, lets face it ,i have a great respect for Pit Bulls, they great working intelligent dogs, who will do anything for they’r owner, there are many pit bull heroes if u search on youtube, but there are A lot of dogs who will win in a fight against a Pit,no matter how big his jaws are,for instant:Caucasian Ovcharka,Tosa,Nebolish Mastiff,American Bulldog,Kangall,Rottweiler,Dogo Canario,Tibetan Mastiff,Boerboel, etc…but it seams that u are fanathics in the support that the Pitt is the best fighter,of coure he is the best, cause he fights only other Pitts.Putt an AMPBT into a yard of a Rotty or everything eles mancyoned above and see what’s going to happen.
I don’t want to see dogs fighting, ESPECIALLY pit bulls. And if the Ovcharka is that unapproachable, people in urban and suburban environments should not have one. A dog like that should only be with his flock.
