There’s no top 10 movie list that can cause more angry responses than a top ten “overrated” list. The problem is that every movie fan has their own personal list of most overrated movies. This doesn’t mean all these movies are terrible – in fact many of them will be personal favorites of other movie fans. That being said, even good or fun movies can be badly overrated. This is a list of the ten most overrated movies in modern times. This list contains a competition – further details at the bottom of the list.
After a dozen amazing movies, this was the one that Denzel Washington finally won an Oscar for. Really? Aside from the fact that this rehashed plot is nothing close to original, it feels like this movie received the attention it did because Denzel played a bad guy and that was out of character. This had the same effect that Wayne Brady as a psycho did for the Chapelle’s Show: it might be wildly popular because it’s out of character, but that doesn’t mean the movie was that good. In fact, it was very average, at best.
This isn’t a bad movie. In fact, it’s pretty good and definitely entertaining, but for all the hype that this film received it definitely qualifies as overrated. This movie is on the IMDB Top 250 list, but the dialogue isn’t overly impressive (and only a precursor to “Pulp Fiction,” which is much better), and a lot of this film is based on “tricks” like the non-chronological order and flashbacks, which are used as style choices to hide plot deficiencies. This is a good movie, but it’s hardly a best 200 ever.
Whales. Whales can connect with unknown aliens who are absolutely unstoppable, and are the only species who can save Earth, forcing time travel to 1980’s America. A very campy movie with a plot that questionable doesn’t even begin to describe. Let this one die quietly, bring back KHAN!

It seems like everyone loves this film, but once again this movie is overrated. It’s slow, and takes a long time to play out with intermittent scares. A fairly smart movie (but not overwhelmingly brilliant as many claim) with a legitimately decent twist, but the balance just isn’t right. A little too long and boring, with a twist ending that while decent, was actually not hard to figure out very early on in the film. The ending sequence is impressive, but like many other overrated films this is a decent movie that took too long and lost track of its balance.
A lot of Al Pacino movies are overrated, and it’s not hard to argue that Pacino is consistently one of the most overrated actors in Hollywood. Look he’s screaming and cussing. I’d say again, but when did Pacino stop long enough to start up “again?” While this was a breakthrough film in the sense of violence, one has to wonder how this movie got its status. The F-word is used endlessly (so much for intelligent dialogue), the violence is way over the top, and there really are much better written drug, Mafia, or violent movies. This film might be legendary, but it’s hard to argue that this movie would still hold up if it was a brand new release.
Not even going into the incredible stretching and disregard for historical truth this film reveled in, keep in mind that this was the movie that kicked the butt of “Saving Private Ryan,” “Dark City,” “American History X,” and “The Big Lebowski,” all around the awards shows, but admit it – 9 out of 10 of you had completely forgotten that this movie had ever even existed until it just appeared on this list. Ten years later and this film’s competitors will be remembered for years or even decades to come, while this movie made it’s chick flick splash and then promptly disappeared once the next one came out.
Okay, even with admitting that 2002 was a down year for films; is that really an excuse for “Chicago” to win best picture? This was an entertaining picture, but “Best Picture?” Really? “The Pianist,” “Igby Goes Down,” “Gangs of New York,” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” were all excellent movies, and it’s hard to accept that “Chicago” was the best of the crop here. This film was fun if you like a musical, but it’s hardly a best picture.

Another very long, absolute clichéd romantic chick flick, except girlfriends went so nuts over this one that it shattered records for money brought in over an insane 9 month theatre running. This movie is the biggest moneymaker of all time? Really? “Titanic” was a long and boring soap opera without good acting, flat cardboard characters, and the all time cliché of a tragic love story between two star-crossed lovers. This is one of the most overrated films of all time, and you could even make a case for this one as number one, except that there are enough people who agree with this assessment to bring it down the overrated list.
There were sections of this film that were hilarious, but there were twice as many that weren’t funny at all. Even worse, as any late night store clerk can attest, these types of jobs provide tons of funny and ridiculous stories that could have been used in this movie, but were barely even touched, instead opting for a lot of cussing and explicit sex jokes. Other parts, like Jay cussing everyone up, just aren’t that funny. This was an impressive independent film, but nothing that should have achieved the near epic status it enjoys.
Anyone who isn’t blown away by star power will see this for what it is: a sad boring film that doesn’t do “Heart of Darkness” any justice. This was terribly acted, stilted, and somehow managed to be ludicrously over dramatic without any drama. Yet this movie is widely considered one of the 100 best of all time and is lauded for its star power. “Apocalypse Now” is terribly overrated, and is on the top of this list as an example of a terrible movie that is lauded for its status over the film itself.

One Pacino that isn’t overrated. SERPICO!!!
I disagree with Clerks but other than that pretty good list.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:17 am
Scarface?!?!?!?!
August 26th, 2008 at 3:22 am
I guess my definiion of “overrated” is way different from yours, because I disagree with almost this entire list.
It’s a clever way to get hundreds of comments, though.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:25 am
Scarface and Clerks are NOT overrated. One movie that is though: The Godfather.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:30 am
For the record guys – and to show that I am not biased when I publish submissions – 5 of the films on this list are favorites of mine!
August 26th, 2008 at 3:30 am
I love half of these.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:32 am
Al Pacino might no be the most versatile actor one can find, but the guy has great importance in the cinema… as a fan of Godfather you are, Jfrater, how could you say that? hahaha
August 26th, 2008 at 3:35 am
Couldn’t agree more with Reservoir Dogs. Way overrated.
Al Pacino has an amazing presence on screen, not to mention charisma. I wouldn’t say HE is overrated. Some of ‘his’ movies might be though.
Agreed with Apocalypse Now too actually.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:37 am
Jamie, in my less than triumphant return to listverse, I must say, I love your ways to get hundreds of comments
And I love a lot of these, but I must admit, they really do belong in their overrated status. Reservoir Dogs is a personal favourite of mine, but it isn’t in the same league as Tarantino’s other movies (I feel) and Training Day has a great portrayal of Denzel Washington (and proves he can actually act in more than one role) it lacked a lot of important details, and yet is still a personal favourite of mine.
Sometimes movies can capture our hearts while leaving out hugely important things, but you have to admit, for a movie to be critically acclaimed world-wide, it has to be doing something right, despite the fact Titanic could’ve been told in 9 seconds: Man and woman meet, sex insues, boak sinks, fat woman gets yelled at, death, end.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:38 am
I completely agree with Clerks. Completely and whole heartedly. I thought it was boring.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:40 am
carpe! Hey – welcome back! Hope you had a great holiday!
Matheusvalente: I didn’t write the list! I love Scarface and REALLY love the Godfather.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:40 am
OMG… film school made me watch Apocalypse Now and I kept wondering, is this it? I haven’t read the book, to be honest… but I was thinking the whole time to myself, “How can this a great movie?”
I did like the opening sequence, though.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:47 am
“Titanic could’ve been told in 9 seconds”
Well, that’s not the main point in cinema… some filmes could have been told in 3 seconds and they’re fantastic. Titanic is overrated for the imensous popularity it got by the time of its release(mostly due to the enormous production and marketing) but nowadays, look at how Titanic is the most used exemple of “Bad filme”. Very common to see someone: “Man, you suck, you’re not fit for Ingmar Bergman, go see Titanic”.
Well, I am fit for Bergman and still consider Titanic a great filme and major breakthrough in many cinematographic areas(visual effects are brilliant).
August 26th, 2008 at 3:48 am
10. Never seen it
9. Agreed, it was alright, but it didn’t blow me away
8. NSI
7. Ace twist, couple scary moments, but I hate Nicole Kidman. I DON’T CARE THAT YOU’RE AN OZZIE
6. NSI, and I never want to. Looks so masculine and posturing. Interest in the film has been kept alive by rappers appearing on Cribs
5. NSI. Thank God, I hate Shakespeare
4. NSI. Renee Zellweger. Vomit
3. Bloody chick flicks
2. C2 was better
1. So boring, I turned it off
August 26th, 2008 at 3:59 am
Good list imo. I agree with pretty much every choice.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:01 am
Clerks was made for $600 dollers, why is it above titanic on this list? Also where is independance day please?
August 26th, 2008 at 4:07 am
I saw Titanic three times. First with friends, to see the special effects of the sinking. 2nd was because mom needed someone to go with her. 3rd was with a buddy who’s girlfriend ordered him to see it while she was out of town, so they could talk about it when she came home (You had to know her). The best I could say is “it was o-kay.”
August 26th, 2008 at 4:07 am
Once was enough for each of these films for me.
Overrated indeed!
August 26th, 2008 at 4:12 am
I had a grammar mistake. whose not “who’s”
August 26th, 2008 at 4:18 am
Apocalypse Now was good. godfather should be on the top.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:23 am
Brave, Shane, very brave. Well-written list, I really enjoyed it. You pretty much had me agreeing with you at each description whether I like the movie or not. Good job.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:24 am
blundellisgod – “Clerks” was not made for $600. It was made for $27575.
To quote Wikipedia (which I hate to do);
“The film is in black-and-white and roughly edited due to a very modest budget of US$27,575. To acquire the funds for the film, Smith sold a large proportion of his extensive comic book collection in 1993, maxed out eight to ten credit cards with $2000 limits, dipped into a portion of funds set aside for his college education and spent insurance money awarded for a car he and Jason Mewes lost in a flood. The film was shot in 21 straight days (with two “pick-up” days).”
The film was also shot in the convience store where Smith worked, and was only availiable for shooting at nights while the store was closed, which explains why the shutters are closed the entire movie.
Sorry… Kevin Smith fan.
I agree with most of the choices on this list though, but you’re right it’s going to stir up a bit of controversy. Some people get pretty aggressive over their movie favourites (as I do with music
).
August 26th, 2008 at 4:34 am
Big Lebowski
Spaceballs
Star Wars
August 26th, 2008 at 4:53 am
For the record, I did not submit this list, but if you looked at the “contributed by” line, you already know that. I think it was brave of Jamie to publish another movie popularity list so soon after mine. It does raise the question (again) of immediate popularity v lasting popularity v critical acclaim.
Also for the record, I love Shakespeare in Love, liked The Others and Chicago and tolerated Clerks. I loathe Pulp Fiction. That would be no 1 on my list.
I guess Randall will show up soon. Then it will be on for young and old.
sarahenity: I think that blundellisgod was being ironic.
Welcome back carpe. Where did you go? Maybe you said, and I wasn’t paying attention.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:56 am
I completely agree with you on the whole list (especially Clerks!), except for Star Trek IV. Where’s your sense of fun, man!
August 26th, 2008 at 4:58 am
Try every lord of the rings film for the DEFINITION of overrated. I bet less than 5% of the people who went to see it had even read the book and that an even lower percentage of people even knew the book existed.
Brainwashing anyone?
August 26th, 2008 at 5:00 am
You know, movies don’t have to be good for people to love them and there is really no shame in that! Not every movie has to make you think to be entertaining. Its just like music- sometimes you just like the song because it reminds you of something, or it’s catchy, or you like to dance to it. It doesn’t necessarily have to be deep! I personally love the Star Trek movie because I love all the characters and I think it’s funny. I don’t really care how “good” it is!
August 26th, 2008 at 5:02 am
Only 23 comments on the list so far and it seems the only controversy is what DIDN’T make the list!
August 26th, 2008 at 5:02 am
Okay I know it is your opinion but Scarface and Apocalypse Now, overrated? I disagree, but good effort on the list even if there are far more deserving movies that could’ve been included, such as Jurrasic Park, Independence Day and The Da Vinci code.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:04 am
Scarface might be a typical gangster movie but imagine if somebody else played Tony Montana. Scarface is a classic because Al Pacino was so damn good. Godfather overrated? For me it is the best movie ever made, nuff said..
*I think Casablanca is a very overrated movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:05 am
I love quite a few of these movies, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t overrated. I had to agree with almost all of the explanations, and I could not possibly agree more with that stupid Titanic film. The actual ship sank faster than that movie took to explain it! I do disagree with Al Pacino being overrated, however. Some of his films — yes. The actor himself — no. To me he has too much presence and charisma to be considered overrated, but again, that’s just my opinion.
Good job, Shane! Can’t wait to read the controversy this will undoubtedly stir up!
August 26th, 2008 at 5:06 am
astraya – lol. i probably should have picked up on that. i’m just gunna go ahead and blame my lack of sleep and current medications for that one.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:11 am
I agree that Scarface is grossly overrated, but not that Al Pacino is. He made the movie into a reasonably entertaining gangster flick, without him it never would have got the attention it has now.
Apocalypse Now overrated? Heart of Darkness must be one hell of a book, because I love Apocalypse Now, but I’ve never read the book. I can imagine it ruins a lot of the experience of the movie
One movie I think is missing here: The Shawshank Redemption. It’s a great movie, but it has been on number 2 in the IMDB top 250 for ages and I don’t think it deserves to be the second best movie in history…
August 26th, 2008 at 5:11 am
Yea, its a pritty fair list if you ask me. Its this kind of destructive hype thats made my friends and I wary of any film coverage, cos you also get the underrated films like Boondock Saints and Sean of the Dead.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:12 am
Clerks isnt exactly rated as such an epic movie because of its content, Which i actually find hilarious, But more for the effort that Kevin Smith put in to actually film the movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:15 am
Hmmm. I guess I’m kinda lucky I haven’t seen any of those movies, or any over-rated seeming movies.
Good job on the list!
August 26th, 2008 at 5:15 am
28. Peri: That’s because there are so damn many! Look at the IMDB top 250 and almost everyone can pick about 100 movies that don’t belong there. The funny part is that almost everyone picks different movies
August 26th, 2008 at 5:17 am
Two Films that I will just never understand the high regard for:
Singing in the Rain
Akira
With all the hype on these movies, I thought they would be better. I fully expected Singing in the Rain to be on this list.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:22 am
I would add:
6th Sense: It has the same problem as the Others. When you first watch it, it is sppoky and tricks you in the end. However, upon repeated viewing it is just slow and boring.
Star Wars: Yes I mean the first one. A New Hope. There’s no denying that its a fun movie with groundbreaking FX, but ultimately it’s kids’ stuff. The only Star Wars movie that I think deserves it’s acclaim is Empire.
I think all Kevin Smith movies are over rated.
I actually think Reservoir Dogs deserves it’s status as an all-time great, as does Pulp Fiction. But every Tarrantino movie since needs to be on this list. He just keeps making worse and worse parodies of himself each time.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:23 am
Hmmm.. Very arguable list, and i disagree with each and every choice of the author, except for “Chicago”. One of the worst lists on this site.. I vote for it to be deleted.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:24 am
I agree with number four….LOTR should have won ‘best film’ all three years, 01′,02′,03′.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:24 am
I’ve seen about half of these movies and pretty much agree with the assessments. I look forward to the comments to come.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:28 am
I totally agree with Scarface. I actually bought it before ever seeing it because it was only 3 bucks at Blockbuster. It was horrible! The acting was the worst I’ve seen! I do disagree with Chicago. I thought the acting was awesome. Plus, when you can do the movie better than the broadway show, you have done something right!
August 26th, 2008 at 5:29 am
Oh, and to Garrett:
Spaceballs?!?!?! Overrated?!?!?! I’m not generally a repeat movie watcher (except for the kiddie movies constantly playing at my house) but I can watch Spaceballs over and over and never get tired of it. I won’t even argue The Big Lebowski (although I could) or Star Wars (you didn’t specify which one), but Spaceballs? Did we see the same movie? Maybe you got the porn version ……
August 26th, 2008 at 5:31 am
I liked Empire strikes back, but I have never understood the acclaim for it, consistently rating higher than ANH. The two stories (Han and co in the asteroid field, and Luke meeting Yoda) unfold at two different speeds. And then there’s the uncompleted ending.
Re ANH: after Luke escapes from the Death Star, he makes the jump to hyperspace and arrives at Yavin. How does the Death Star follow him there? Come to think of it, was it built orbiting Alderaan, or how did it get there?
August 26th, 2008 at 5:31 am
Oh god. As an avid reader and first time poster I’ve gotta say this: Why the hell do I care what films you think are overrated?? It’s all down to opinion and I’m not interested in yours. What next? a list of your favourite cheeses or your daily hygene routine? stick to lists that contain facts, far more interesting than what you think about a bunch of movies.
On the whole though, great site.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:34 am
10. Walk the Line
9. Star Wars
8. Half-Baked
7. Kill Bill Vol. 1
6. Kids
5. Natural Born Killers
4. Scarface
3. The Godfather Trilogy
2. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
1. TITANIC
August 26th, 2008 at 5:35 am
44. Cheeshygirl: I actually agree that Spaceballs is not that good… but then again; it isn’t meant to be good, it’s meant to be funny, and I’ve never met anyone who thinks it’s *good* though funny as hell.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:36 am
Thank you for “Apocalypse Now.” I’ve thought I was the lone voice in the wilderness on this one. I remember walking out of a theater some thirty years ago, listening to the two friends I’d seen it with talk, wondering if they’d just seen the same movie I’d had to sit through.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:36 am
I agree with most of your list, especially Shakespeare in Love, Titanic, Chicago and Apocalypse Now – Finally someone else besides me thinks that film is overrated.
I also agree that the first Star Wars is often held as the best but it pales in comparison to the true masterpiece which was The Empire Strikes Back.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:38 am
I hated Titanic. It was so overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:40 am
GREAT LIST!!! Finally someone has the guts to call Scarface overrated!!
Allthough i’d order the list like this:
#1: Scarface
#2: 300
#3: Titanic
#4: Fight Club
#5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10: I don’t know…
August 26th, 2008 at 5:42 am
Wait…scratch that…I’d put the Godfather Trilogy at #1 and move everything else down a notch. I’d add include star wars but people pretty much all agree that it’s gone consistently downhill.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:43 am
Also I’ve never seen pulp fiction but I’m sure I’d think it’s overrated from the clips I’ve seen.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:44 am
I like how after each movie is slated for being bad, the option to buy it is given! ‘This movie is boring and slow…’ Great sales pitch!! haha
August 26th, 2008 at 5:45 am
54: If you’ve never seen pulp fiction you can’t call it overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:45 am
i like more than a couple of the movies here, but definately they are overrated. you could even make a top 20 most overrated films only with what the oscars have awarded in the last decades.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:45 am
I agree with some of the picks. “Reservoir Dogs” isn’t just overrated, it’s unwatchable. Same goes for “Clerks”, in fact I’ve never been able to sit through that whole movie. I like Kevin Smith as a personality, he’s great when does talk shows or commentaries on DVDs, but I’ve never cared for him as a film maker.
And I’ve never understood the love affair for Stark Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:48 am
KneeDeep: Welcome. This site’s got it already – http://listverse.com/food/10-great-cheeses-you-should-try/
August 26th, 2008 at 5:48 am
Sorry for the quadruple post but I gotta do this.
@KneeDeep:
Do you have am mental problem? Are you going to dribble? Seriously! You’re an “avid reader” and you haven’t managed to figure out yet that a lot of these lists are based on opinion!? Why do you think people comment on this site!? To share their opinions about the list! If all the lists were just quoted facts then no one would have much of an opinion to share because you can’t disagree with universal fact! You should stay an avid reader but please don’t post ever again unless you have something minutely useful to add.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:50 am
Wow a lot of comments by me…I just keep thinking of stuff to late. haha sorry ’bout that.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:52 am
Haha it’s blatantly obvious that one of KneeDeep’s favorite movies are on this list
August 26th, 2008 at 5:54 am
@kneedeep: I know that…that’s why I clarified that I’ve never seen it. But I have seen quite a bit of it from youtube clips on this site and elsewhere and it just gleams of overrating by my standards.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:57 am
Wow, I was expecting to be totally outraged by this list but I agree with every single one. Especially Clerks. It’s not that any of these films are *bad*, per se (except maybe Titanic), but distinctly average, which is maybe a worse criticism.
I’d add Lost in Translation, inexplicably acclaimed despite its overarching themes of “Look how arthouse this is!” and “Aren’t foreigners funny?”. And also Easy Rider. What a diabolical mess that has not aged well at all. I watched it for my film degree and thought it was just terrible.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:58 am
First of all, just because a film is not to your taste does not mean it’s overrated. It just happens to run counter to what you search for in entertainment. Fight Club, Clerks and Reservoir Dogs are monumental because they do not follow the norm, and their cult status is cemented by the avowed labor that went into making those films what they are.
I thought of adding No Country For Old Men just beacuse it beat out There Will Be Blood, but then I decided that would be nitpicking, not to mention futile.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:03 am
Also, to call Titanic overrated is now officially an overused statement. Forrest Gump follows the same category.
Pulp Fiction: Overrated? Are you trying to insult EVERYONE?
August 26th, 2008 at 6:09 am
Don’t forget, “Gone With the Wind”
August 26th, 2008 at 6:11 am
Lost in Translation comes to mind.
I don’t think I’ll ever get the hype surrounding that one.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:13 am
F. McClure: “Pulp Fiction: Overrated? Are you trying to insult EVERYONE?”
Haha yeah actually…well not insult them I was just waiting to get a comment insulting my mom or something
I was joking about it being overrated in general but like I said later it’s just my opinion. And yeah…Fight Club is overrated. I always read about how great everybody thinks Fight Club is but I’ve only met one person who actually likes it. He always trys to get people to watch it when they’re at his house but everyone says that it’s, well, overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:18 am
Training Day – Never saw it
Reservoir Dogs – I liked it a lot, but your right, probly overrated
The Others – Never saw it
Scarface – Its not the best movie ever, but its DAM good.
Never saw the next two.
Clerks – No. No.
Titanic – No.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:19 am
Oh God, another film list. Film lists are overrated
August 26th, 2008 at 6:19 am
Oh and forgot Apocolypse now, WAY overrated.
And I think Big Lebowski and Dr.Strangelove are overrated too.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:23 am
Not sure I could bring myself to agree much with the author. Training Day – ok yeah, Denzel was good but not Oscar worthy. Not sure I would put any Star Trek movie on a list of overrated movie, it is what it is. Titanic, yes.
Reservior Dogs had shitty dialog huh? And it has plot deficiencies? Where? No one, to my knowledge, has ever said Clerks was an epic, except for you. It’s a damn fine movie made on a shoestring budget with actors who have never been within 500 yards of a camera or a studio. And if you don’t laugh your ass off, throughout the movie I might add, then you don’t have much of a sense of humor. Seek counseling.
And quite honestly, you really need to re-edit your comments on Apocalypse Now, because you make no sense whatsoever. This film was terribly acted? Uh, no, not really. Attack of the Clones was terribly acted. Lots of star power? Yeah, it had arguably one of the greatest actors ever. Without any drama? That’s just fucking ridiculous. What the fuck was all that shit at the end? A puppet show? Along with Full Metal Jacket, it practically redefined what a war movie is.
Most of what you listed got attention for a good reason, it deserves it. I realize Shakespeare in Love isn’t on a whole lot of top ten lists, but everything about that movie was well done, acting, direction, photography, dialog, plot and design. Should it have been best picture? Maybe not, but it deserved to be mentioned.
You don’t even go out of your way to give us any decent definition of what overrated is. The list comes off as popular movies you don’t like. You want true overrated movies? Try the most overrated movie of all time – Independence Day. That movie was hyped out of its ass, until people actually saw what a piece of dog crap it was. You can’t even escape the damn thing on cable – it’s practically on every weekend. Same goes for the Godzilla re-make. But those two monuments to hype and marketing are nowhere to be seen on your list.
This list is just crap, poorly researched, without definition and validity. We’re supposed to better than this at this site.
Thanks, now I’m grouchy.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:24 am
I couldn’t agree more with the films on this list. I just wish it were a Top 20 list rather than just a Top 10. So many more could be added to this excellent list.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:25 am
Dear Shane Dayton, please never contribute to this site ever again. You lack a basic grasp of the English language and have clearly misunderstood what the term “overrated” actually means. For example, Reservoir Dogs was not particularly well received when first released and has only amassed a cult following ever since; hardly liable to be termed “rated”, let alone “overrated”.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:26 am
Much agreement from me, but not all.
10. Didn’t see it.
9. Agree 100%, even about Pulp Fiction being better.
8. Probably the worst Star Trek (original crew) movie besides STV. Didn’t know it was highly rated, though.
7. I liked it. Would have made a bigger impact had I not seen the Sixth Sense first. Another one that I didn’t know was popular.
6. Didn’t see it. Doesn’t look very good.
5. Overrated. It was OK, funny, and you get Paltrow’s boobs.
4. Honestly, I can’t believe I liked it as much as I did. It was OK. Not great, though.
3. Wretched. Almost universally hated now, so no longer overrated, but used to be WAY overrated.
2. Clerks is great, but you’re right to put it on this list.
1. I tried to watch Apocalypse Now, but it was late and I couldn’t stay awake. I might try again some day, but probably not.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:26 am
YES! Thank you for putting Scarface on the list! It is WAY overrated!
fishing4monkeys : I am right there with you on Fight Club and 300. I will also throw in The Shawshank Redemption (it was good, but not nearly as good as everyone says).
August 26th, 2008 at 6:26 am
I like Titanic, but I agree it was overrated. But now it’s too overbashed.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Scarface is definitely overrated, so is Training Day, Clerks and pretty much all the other films. Except for Apocalypse Now. That film is definitely one of the world’s all time best you can’t compete.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:31 am
I’m glad Apocalypse Now and The Others were on there. I didn’t understand why people thought those movies were so great. I had a hard time getting through AN….I remember by the end going “that’s it?” For The Others I kept waiting for it to get scary and I felt like nothing happened.
I’m not sure 8 belongs on this list just because I’ve never heard it hyped up or talked about nearly as much as the others on this list.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:31 am
I expected to see The Sixth Sense here. I mean, come on… It’s much much more overrated than The Others!
August 26th, 2008 at 6:33 am
Yeah, I don’t think Star Trek IV belongs here, because almost everyone realizes that it’s pretty campy and cheesy. I’ve never heard anyone call it a great film in any seriousness. But the rest of the list is pretty spot on!
August 26th, 2008 at 6:33 am
astraya: i had to jump down immediately and respond to your comment at #24. you loathe pulp fiction?!?!? for what reason? you don’t like a good story? maybe great dialogue isn’t your cup o tea? do you hate superb acting?
i tried to defend your other list, but if i had known you felt this way about PF i may have left you out to dry.
btw, i am supremely biased about PF being a great movie, in case you hadn’t noticed.
one movie i would add to this list is “Rudy”. geez, what seemed like 9 hours of boredom for a pretty good final 15 minutes.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:36 am
bs Scarface Training Day and Apocalypse now are all in my top 25 movies of all time.I’m guessing this list was made by a woman or….
August 26th, 2008 at 6:38 am
oh my,
considering your views on abortion and death penalty and overrated movies (Apocalypse now?), i consider you a dangerous err morron. RSS is gone.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:38 am
I also agree that The Sixth Sense should have been on the list (that’s why it should have been a Top 20). Unbreakable was SO much better that The Sixth Sense. In fact, if a(nother) underrated list comes out, Unbreakable should definitely be number one on that.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:39 am
In my opinion, Little Miss Sunshine and Juno deserve to be on this list too. They were enjoyable, but are the female-leads really worthy of their Oscar nominations? Abigail Breslin was just being cute. Ellen Page, to me, was plain annoying.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:42 am
Apocalypse Now IMHO is a fantastic film. Titanic does suck tho.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:42 am
i agree with all of them, besides scarface, are you kidding???? Al Pacino an overrated actor?????
bluto: training day is an average movie, i actually found it very f*cking boring
August 26th, 2008 at 6:43 am
Most of the list is fine, but Reservoir Dogs!!??? What were you smoking?
August 26th, 2008 at 6:44 am
This list reminds me of forgetting to do my homework the night before and trying to get it done on the way to school.
It’s all bullshit and because it’s supposedly a subjective and ‘controversial.’
To me the only controversial thing about the list is that the author has painted himself as someone who doesn’t know much about film.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:46 am
i totlly agree with Shakespeare in Love, but i think titanic should be n 1, is just a piece of sh*t!!!!!!!!!1
August 26th, 2008 at 6:46 am
FYI: It stopped being cool to bash Titanic like 7 years ago guys. It’s gone into relative TNT/TBS obscurity now, leave it be.
Training Day was just plain awful..I have no idea why Denzel won an Oscar for that. RARARRRRRRRRRR look I have a gun GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. He was better in John Q.
I think Reservoir Dogs is actually better than Pulp Fiction, but thats just me.
Chicago (and Moulin Rouge) pretty much brought musicals back into mainstream movie making, which I liked. I thought it was well made and fun, and I think pretty much everyone who likes musicals liked it, but I guess if you aren’t a fan of the genre you scream that it’s overrated.
Saving Private Ryan is way overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:47 am
Al Smithee: don’t forget gone with the wind??????are you crazy??? that is one of the best films i’ve ever seen
August 26th, 2008 at 6:51 am
callie: Private Ryan overrated? how? almost universal acclaim by the men that were on the beach that day and in the fights that surrounded it. if the point of a movie is to get you to be submersed in the story that is told, and the people that were actually in the story say it is spot on, how can you argue?
August 26th, 2008 at 6:51 am
I agree. Apocalypse now is such a boring film from the very start, Titanic also. I agree that Scarface is overrated but maybe in the top 20. Training day is a great movie, but, again, i agree that Denzel did not deserve an oscar for that film.
Great list!!!!
August 26th, 2008 at 6:53 am
Titanic-wretch.
I liked Resevoir Dogs but agree it was probably overated.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:53 am
Don’t agree with some of this list, but other parts I do agree with. IMO The Exorcist is a horribly overrated movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:55 am
scarface? overrated? no no no no no no. no. never.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:57 am
I don’t disagree with much of the list. I would have probably included Citizen Kane, though. I remember being excited the first time I was able to see it on the big screen during a Film Appreciation class. I liked the direction, but the story didn’t do a lot for me.
And I’d have included Forrest Gump and Silence of the Lambs, but then I’d be repeating myself.
Perhaps 2001 as well? I always compare that in my mind to Solyaris, though, but that’s because I’m a fan of Tarkovsky. I even enjoyed Stalker.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:00 am
fishing4monkeys: Yes I do realise that these lists are ranked in order by the authors opinions. Many of the lists on here however are compiled from factual information that make the subjects informative and enjoyable to read. To read a list based upon someone elses (the authors) opinion on a movie is not interesting in the slightest. Thank you for your negative post though, I thought the people on this site were more intelligent than to start calling people names.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:02 am
Yeah, Blacknimbus, the most widely accepted, critically acclaimed as the greatest movie of all time should definitely be on a shitty list like this.
And yes, the movie that defined science fiction movies for the next 25 years should be on a shitty list like this too.
Are you out of your mind? Re-up the meds dude!
August 26th, 2008 at 7:03 am
I def. agree with Clerks being over rated and not that funny.
I don’t agree with Sixth Sense being over rated, it is a great movie especially the first time one sees it.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:05 am
I have to admit, apart from Apocalypse Now, I would agree with your entire list. Bold move, putting a few Best Picture winners on there. Like it was said in the list description, even though the films aren’t necessarily “bad,” they don’t deserve the attention they’ve gotten. (well, the Star Trek one is definitely bad; not sure too many people will argue against that).
Example: I rented both Clerks and Reservoir Dogs based on reading positive reviews, plus friends doing the whole “you HAVE to see this movie!” thing. I was seriously disappointed. Reservoir Dogs is only interesting because it isn’t chronological, which isn’t anything new. Pulp Fiction is a much better film. Clerks is “funny” because moronic people say horribly raunchy things for two hours? I turned Clerks off 30 minutes into it because it was the same thing over and over again.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:06 am
There is no way that Apocalypse Now should be above Titanic! At least Apocalypse Now had those great 10 minutes of Kilgore.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:07 am
Great, my favorite site has now become a salt lick for buffoons.
What’s next a list of overrated directors that includes Kubrick and Fellini?
August 26th, 2008 at 7:08 am
oh list verse, you always leave me disappointed. another list that satisfies a single persons opinions
August 26th, 2008 at 7:09 am
…Don’t get me started on Kubrick…
August 26th, 2008 at 7:09 am
But Steve, aren’t ALL lists on Listvese of personal opinion? They’re always in an order of preference, so…
August 26th, 2008 at 7:11 am
“Yeah, Blacknimbus, the most widely accepted, critically acclaimed as the greatest movie of all time should definitely be on a shitty list like this.
And yes, the movie that defined science fiction movies for the next 25 years should be on a shitty list like this too.
Are you out of your mind? Re-up the meds dude!”
Odd reaction. I happen to like good movies, it’s just that Citizen Kane didn’t live up to the hype in my estimation. It seems to end up as number one on a lot of lists, but Touch of Evil was more interesting. Lawrence of Arabia, just to pick one of my favorites out of a hat, was vastly superior. Perhaps I missed the point of the list, but isn’t this about overrated movies and not ’shitty’ films?
I’m glad you liked it…I thought that aside from the storyboarding, it was rather bland. Greatest movie to some people, an interesting film study to me and nothing more. At least I assume that you liked it and didn’t base your opinion on a different list of movies.
It’s a pity that the internet such a lousy method of communication. This kind of list should be a fun topic of discussion, but it hardly ever ends up that way.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:11 am
One scene in Apocalypse Now, going down river and listening to AFN radio. Oh my God did that bring back memories. Loved the movie.
TITANIC-like someone said in an earlier list-THE BOAT SINKS
August 26th, 2008 at 7:11 am
This should be retitled “I didn’t do any research, but here goes.” Or maybe, “I spilled Red Bull on my keyboard and this is what appeared on the screen when I wiped off the keys.”
August 26th, 2008 at 7:12 am
One thing I’ve found is that quite a few movies are awesome or awful, depending on what gender is watching them. Women tend to love Titanic. Men tend to love Apocalypse Now. Both movies tend to be awful to the other gender. (I like Titanic for the historical aspect, and found Apocalypse Now to be dull with large portions of dull on a river, and no relation to Heart of Darkness in the end.) A lot of guys I know love 2001, whereas I nearly fell asleep during it…
August 26th, 2008 at 7:13 am
well got to hand it to you…you are not biased…
Titanic’s production was one of the best at the that time so I guess that’s the reason for the hype. Never heard of the hype for Shakespeare In Love though.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:15 am
Blacknimbus, ok I’ll spell it out for you. This is a list of overrated movies. (allegedly) Citizen Kane is regarded by many as the greatest movie ever made. So in conclusion, it shouldn’t even be mentioned on a list of overrated movies. Are we clear now?
August 26th, 2008 at 7:17 am
I agree 100% that Apocalype Now is overrated. I also think Kill Bill vol.1 and Clockwork Orange should be included. I thought all three were boring
August 26th, 2008 at 7:17 am
Agree with Blacknimbus on Citizen Kane.
Definitely agree on Shakespeare in Love. Could not get into it at all and I usually don’t mind period pieces.
I didn’t think Training Day was particularly over rated but then I haven’t read a lot of hype about it either.
What’s with the criticism about the list writer?
August 26th, 2008 at 7:20 am
God Father, extremely overrated. I agree with number ten Denzel had a ton of other great movies that got looked over ( Malcolm X maybe?) I think they just chose that one because they knew he was well over due for recognition.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:20 am
Better title for this list: “Top 10 Movies I Think It’d be Cool and Controversial to Say Aren’t Really That Good, Even Though They Actually Are.”
You’re welcome.
And, ooooh, so edgy beating up on Titanic. Pathetic. Welcome to the internet, dude.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:21 am
bucslim: An alternate title for this list?
“Movies I don’t like that other people do”
August 26th, 2008 at 7:22 am
Bob: Snap
August 26th, 2008 at 7:22 am
I love you for making this list. So many movies have been recommended to me, like Scarface, so I rent and watch them only to be sorely disappointed.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:24 am
fail
August 26th, 2008 at 7:24 am
Wow, I think you’re definition of overrated is a tad bit off. Training Day, Scarface, Resevoir Dogs and a few others(not all) in here are some of the best movies ever. How would you even know? most of the time you’re posting lists on actors and movies that are over 50 years old!!! Not every movie has to have intelligent dialogue or “the routine”, it’s what makes a unique and entertaining movie. People will pay for what they want to see, people liked Titanic, its plot and everything. I really don’t think you’re a good movie critic. This list fails. Most of lists lately have been kind of dull. I’ve sent you various suggestions, because I’m only guessing that’s what you want is suggestions from members. How about the Top 10 most influential human beings of all time or Top 10 places to hide from nuclear war…you know something along the lines of INTERESTING.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:25 am
“Blacknimbus, ok I’ll spell it out for you. This is a list of overrated movies. (allegedly) Citizen Kane is regarded by many as the greatest movie ever made. So in conclusion, it shouldn’t even be mentioned on a list of overrated movies. Are we clear now?”
This is all opinion, so your apparent contention that hard facts are in play here is erroneous. And you prove that in fact Citizen Kane is the most likely to be overrated because it’s generally considered to be in the top 5 if not number one of all time. How can a movie be consider ‘overrated’ unless it’s, I don’t know, actually good? I don’t think you understand what overrated actually means…it’s hardly pejorative. At least not the way you are interpreting it.
Make your own list…you seem to be bursting to share your wisdom with the world.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:29 am
I really can’t wait to see what retarded ass list you make next.
You should make a list of Top 10 overrated websites!!! You being #1! but it’s your list so you decide.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:30 am
why isn’t the Godfather Trilogy not there? geez, I tried watching the first one and fell asleep, I have watch the other two and found that they were all right, nothing to get all wound up about. It is a great story, the movies not so much.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:30 am
Man lists about movies bring the worst in people.Didnt Jfrater said something about not wanting any more movie listes.
BTW this list is pretty good.Could have been top 15 maybe even 20 but i agree with this list.
))
August 26th, 2008 at 7:32 am
I wholly agree with every movie listed! …except perhaps Star Trek IV. It’s sci-fi – it’s supposed to be out there (and it really was with the whales).
August 26th, 2008 at 7:32 am
i think they’re are way more movies that were more overrated like: SNAKES ON A PLANE! lol
August 26th, 2008 at 7:33 am
“I really can’t wait to see what retarded ass list you make next.
You should make a list of Top 10 overrated websites!!! You being #1! but it’s your list so you decide.”
Lol…some of you guys really need to relax. This is a list about movies, not politics or religion. Save some of that vitriol…you’ll wear yourself out before you turn 18.
And ‘jerky’, they got you to click the link and make a post. Thanks for the blog traffic, I guess.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:33 am
training day by far and above, no oscar material.
titanic, come on now. roger rabbit much better
August 26th, 2008 at 7:35 am
I love how butt hurt everyone is over there precious movies being called overrated. So many movies are so much better than all of those on this list. Somebody get these people a box of tissues….
August 26th, 2008 at 7:37 am
2001: mind numbing! Thats my vote.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:38 am
This blog is overrared…
August 26th, 2008 at 7:38 am
I loved Titanic, I do think it’s over rated at all, ok maybe leo and kate are over rated, but not the movie its self.
I have to agree with The Others. It’s a good movie, but not great like a lot of people made it out to be.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:40 am
Number 1 for me is “The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonsai”… My wife loves this movie and has hyped and hyped it for me to watch. But, E-V-E-R-Y-T-I-M-E we sit down to watch it, I fall asleep within 30 minutes. I’ve had to resort to watching it in chunks and still haven’t finished it.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:44 am
All of these films are more than just “over-rated” they are over-played on television and over boughten at stores to this day! Stop wasting money on stupid movies and go watch a good movie like Mullholland Drive!
August 26th, 2008 at 7:45 am
we should call this list “movies that are popular that shane doesn’t like”. at least that way, people wouldn’t be offended by their baby being called overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:45 am
I thought The Others was a very good film. But then, I generally prefer the older, slower-paced, atmospheric films. I do not require explosions or chase scenes every five minutes to keep my attention!
Some of the movies that I feel are over-rated are The Graduate, A Clockwork Orange, and The Deer Hunter. All three of them are supposed to be fabulous movies, and at the end of all three I wanted to demand a refund of those hours of my life that I had wasted watching them!
August 26th, 2008 at 7:48 am
When you think about how much money was spent to make “Clerks,” one can understand a little better why it was rated higher. They did a lot with not very much….
August 26th, 2008 at 7:49 am
I disagree about “Shakespeare in Love,” I thought it was an absolutely wonderful movie….
But thank god someone finally spoke up about how overrated “Titanic” was!!!
August 26th, 2008 at 7:52 am
man, someone really dropped the brilliance ball on this list.
apocalypse now is nothing short of a magnum opus.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:54 am
I didnt know that The Others was popular enough to be considered overrated? I loved Titanic, I’m a woman who loves her chick flicks. I thought Denzels acting was great in trainig day, the movie was just ok though. I love this site because it lets all of us voice our opinion.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:54 am
I TOTALLY agree with Scarface. Although I own it and LOVE Al Pacino I think the hype of it has led people to believe it is one of the best gangster movies off all time. To be honest I personally think Casino, Goodfellas, Heat, and Carlito’s Way was better.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:58 am
140 Mathilda. I have never seen a clockwork orange and I want to see it badly because I still hear all the hype about it today. Im sad to hear its overrated
August 26th, 2008 at 8:00 am
Finally, someone has told the world (or atleast the universe
) the truth about some of Hollywood’s supposed greatest films. Damn fine list, Shane. Damn fine indeed.
I hate Titanic. Not because of the ‘over-night sensation’ of the film. Not because of it’s place on IMDB’s list, which is way too high in my opinion. No.
The reason that I hate Titanic is because that film was so critically acclaimed that it bled over into my senior prom night. Yup, our senior prom’s theme song for 1998 could have and should have been Cindy Lauper’s song Time After Time, but nooooooo Celine Dion’s song My Heart Will Go On was the hit of the night…over-night sensation.
We sat down at a table during that song in a sort of silent protest. Not like that made any kind of difference, but hey, I enjoyed my prom night otherwise.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:01 am
disc-
I really think I’m the only one in the world who doesn’t like that movie..it jsut really did nothing for me and everyone else thinks it’s an uberbig deal..Just my opinion that it’s overrrated, but if I wrote this list I’d never put it on there, as I know how many people like it. Although if there is ever a “calle’s most overrated films” list, oy can bet money that’ll be number one.
And Snakes on a Plane was wonderful, and here’s why. I got what I paid for. There were snakes, and they were on a plane. Pure and simple, great movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:03 am
Apocalypse Now is not overrated.
“a sad boring film that doesn’t do “Heart of Darkness” any justice”
Shane: Did you even read Heart of Darkness? I’m sick of seeing movies that try and match the book page for page. They are doomed from the start. Its people like Coppola, Milius and Herr who we need writing screenplays from books. They took what was at the core of Conrad’s book and translated it beautifully to reflect the current time. I just don’t think you get it, yet. Sad and boring? Pop in an adderall and watch it again. Not the redux though…its overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:04 am
Quiana-
Go ahead and see it, it’s reallllly good. Read the book first though, but just a warning you may have to print out an online dictionary for the first couple chapters until you understand all the words. I think you can google Clockwork Orange dictionaries.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:05 am
I TOTALLY agree with Scarface! Although I love Al Pacino and the movie I believe the hype of it all has led people to believe that it is the best gangster movie ever. To be honest…I personally believe that Heat and Carlito’s Way was better. Even Goodfellas was better
August 26th, 2008 at 8:08 am
Yeah, I think Fight Club should be on this list, way overrated. I agree with all of these choices, though. I didn’t think The Others was that popular to begin with, anyways.
Aso, if you notice, most of these movies are in frequent sydication on television…
August 26th, 2008 at 8:09 am
Great list, but you made 2 mistakes…
(1) Should be on: CLOCKWORK ORANGE – The awfulness of this movie cannot be overstated, but let me try: Awful, awful, awful, etc., etc., etc.
(2) Should be off: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE – I still swoon thinking about this movie!
August 26th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Thanks Callie, will do!! I would much rather read the book first anyway. The books are usually better.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:12 am
Man you have no depth of film knowledge. The vast majority of acclaimed critics, writers, and actors would heartily disagree with you. This list is too much of a 1 person perspective than a well-rounded presentation that lists on this site should be.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:13 am
OCean’s Thirteen should be on this lest. It was unecessary, and I think that Titanic should be at the #1 slot. Plot? THE BOAT SANK! I only wanted to see the last 30 miinutes for the effects…
August 26th, 2008 at 8:14 am
JFrater–
Received the movie–Once Upon A Time in the West. Amazing.
Many thanks for the competition prize!!!!
–Dow
August 26th, 2008 at 8:18 am
another movie i thought was rediculously overrated was boondock saints. it’s really not even close to good. oooh they have a little saying, ooooh they’re irish (scottish? don’t care) the movie is boring.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:18 am
the hype that surrounds clerks isn’t because of the intelligent dialouge, but mainly due to the fact that they only had something like $35,000 to make it, and succeded, if clerks is number 2 then by logic the blair witch project would have to be number 1, every other film i would probably agree on
August 26th, 2008 at 8:18 am
worse list ever.
please stop watching movies.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Here’s an idea. For those who say ‘this sucks, how about a list on ____’…go create a list. Really.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Most overrated: Dark Knight.
Nowhere near as good as Batman Begins.
As good as Heath was his performance was quite similar to Brandon Lee in The Crow. (Another movie overrated due to death. The film would have been better if it didn’t have to work around his mid shoot death.)
August 26th, 2008 at 8:22 am
119. Bob:
I vote for your title.
I didn’t know Star Trek IV was rated at all. Is one of the worst Star Trek movies, many people agree.
Even Titanic and Shakespeare in Love are what they wanted to be: bad twee commercial films.
About Apocalypse Now … let me see…
Nerdy guy: Hi Shane!
Shane: Hi. I’m going to see Apocalypse Now couse I’ve just read Heart of Darkness
Ng: I don’t know what Heart of Darkness is but the movie is much better. Is so good that you’ll have to boot your eyes out after watching it.
Shane: Don’t worry I just want to see some action with a famous cast without wondering if the movie is telling me any deeper message. So I will enjoy it for sure…
¬¬
130. akelly318:
snakes on a plane will never be rated enough XD
August 26th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Cool. Another list guaranteed to generate a lot of responses. Add these movies to the next list:
Fight Club
Do the Right Thing
Shawshank Redemption
Star Wars
Pulp Fiction
Metropolis
A ClockWork Orange
August 26th, 2008 at 8:25 am
Where is Batman : The Dark Knight ?
August 26th, 2008 at 8:32 am
Seriously who wrote this list?
I need to kick his(her) ass.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:32 am
I love Shakespeare in Love, Titanic and Reservoir Dogs!
And I think that MT (comment 164) is absolutely wrong about most of the movies he suggested.
I suggest Forrest Gump.
That movie isn’t even good, but everyone loves it.
Whyyyyyyyyyy?
August 26th, 2008 at 8:33 am
Your forgot The English Patient. One of the most boring filmes I’ve watched. Everybody loved it. I felt like an alien when I told people what I think of the movie at the time, almost just like Elaine in Seinfeld that was ostricised and lost her job because of her dislike of the movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:33 am
Awesome list!! Not only clerks, but ANY kevin smith movie is overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:34 am
Love the list even though I don’t agree with Reservoir Dogs, Star Trek IV (campy fun), Clerks, and Apocalypse Now. If you remember that Apocalypse now was in 1979, just a short time after the US finally got out of Vietanm. That was pretty cutting edge stuff for the day (IMDB has Kramer vs. Kramer & the Muppet Movie as the top grossing films of 1979).
Chicago is a great example of many movies that I classify as overrated. The whole time I watched it kept thinking, “This is a decent movie, but I am not sure why it is so hyped.” Moulin Rouge is one of the few movies in the last ten years that I bailed on…in fact, give Nicole her own section. Her bad acting in Eyes Wide Shut really stands out in a film filled with faults and disappointments.
Shakespeare in Love – Turd.
Garrett: Interesting call on Star Wars. I like the film, but the acting is awful!
Skipps: Good call on Little Miss Sunshine. I like dark comedies, but not depressing comedies (John Cusack I’m looking right at you).
I am in the tank for Kubrick (note my handle) but I understand that he does not have universal appeal. I was recently flipping channels and came across Path of Glory (1957). I missed the opening credits and was not familiar with the movie but I still found it compelling. I thought the battle scenes were very impressive for the time and the subject matter (WWI). It was only at the end that I saw it was directed by Stan the Man.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:36 am
I love alot of these movies…. am I overrated? But then I do tend to like alot of movies. I don’t know, maybe it is just me. I don’t listen to what other people say good or bad, I will watch the movie for myself and make my own decision.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:37 am
so reservoir dogs is overrated and pulp fiction isn’t. ok.
well, i for one do not agree
August 26th, 2008 at 8:37 am
Hopefully this hasn’t been mentioned already, but who really reads the comments down here anyway? Cloverfield was highly, highly overrated. I was totally let down when I saw that movie, as was about everyone who bought into the hype on the internet. Bad acting, weak plot, and the monster was not even that cool
August 26th, 2008 at 8:41 am
I think that the Godfather and the Dark Knight are very overrated but are still very good. I disagree with Clerks and Reservoir Dogs but I haven’t seen most of the others except for Scarface which I agree is overrated but still good. Clerks is one of my favorite movies.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:45 am
other than training day and chicago, you are an idiot.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:45 am
I actually enjoyed “Shakespear in Love”. I think the only reason it catches so much flack is because it won Best Picture, an honor it really didn’t deserve.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Forrest Gump is overrated. The gimmick of inserting Tom Hanks into historical footage is cute but the story is as light as the feather that opens and closes it. It’s also extremely anti-intellectual … All the good things happen to the stupid guy while all the bad things happen to the smart girl. Hmmmm.
Crash is also overrated. It could have been a Lifetime made-for-TV movie and no one would have known the difference.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:50 am
this might be heresy to some, but i got blade runner for winning a competition here, thanks jayfray, but it was pretty bad. fell asleep twice.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:53 am
Star Wars is not overrated. Love it or hate it, it permanentaly changed the film industry and the series is still remains a benchmark for all scifi films.
Star Trek IV should not be on this list, not because its a good movie (it ain’t) but because it is not overrated. Who is overrating this movie? It didn’t win awards, doesn’t appear on any top scifi film lists and I don’t think it is even a favorite among Trekkies. What it does have the distinction of being is the highest grossing Trek film, but that isn’t saying much.
Crash should take its place, this is my pic for worst Best Picture. Titanic is overrated, no doubt, but it is an entertaining movie for what it is and what it tries to be. I don’t agree with it winning Best Picture, but I can understand why, it is old-fashioned Hollywood spectacle that made a lot of money. Crash on the other hand is garbage, poorly written, heavy handed trash. Racism is bad? Gee, thanks for letting me know, Haggis.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:53 am
Seriously, who wrote this claptrap. They should never be allowed near a keyboard or movie theater ever again. Dear god.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:53 am
I 100% agree with Scareface… actually should have been #1 on the list. Goddam I do I hate the fandom surrounding this flick. Yes it was a good movie for its time in history but good god everywhere I go its Scareface poster this, scareface t-shirt that. Why they hell does every gangster wanna be badass hold this movie in such high regard. IF you never saw this movie 15 plus years ago and are just watching it for the first time today you would be completely dumfounded. That last statement really constitutes everything on this list. Everyone one of the forementioned movies are GOOD flicks but unless you were one of the special first ones to see then they just dont hold up againts the hype.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:59 am
I’m actually surprised at some of the meanness flying from the fingers of some of the regulars here at ListVerse. Telling people not to post their opinions, calling them buffoons, and generally bashing the list writer isn’t necessary. Geez, you guys should know better. Most of the lists on here are based on opinions and the great thing about this site is that we can all agree to disagree and enjoy the friendly and mostly intelligent banter. Well, at least, it used to be that way. Seems like some of the newer commentors are rubbing off on the veterans, IMO. Meh, what can you do? I think I’ll just slink back over to the forums and IRC and leave you all to duke it out here. *retreats to her comfy home away from home*
August 26th, 2008 at 9:00 am
..forrest gump was a great movie, just the whole idea behind it was very well thought out. and crash was also a great film. to me it felt like an independent film. i dont know what your talking about REHuntJr.. and about training day, you know what made that movie terrible? Ethen Hawk. if you think about every movie hes been in, you think “this movie could have been good if they casted a good actor.”
August 26th, 2008 at 9:02 am
Oh, and please refrain from telling me “Welcome to the internet.” I am well aware of how this whole thing works. I just expected better from *some* of the regular commentors on this particular site.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:08 am
I don’t think we can tell if a movie is overrated or not judging with today’s standards. We must consider the specific period and conditions that existed when the movie was played.
I mean, if you watch Citizen Kane or The General and try judge them today, you will not understand why they are considered such great movies.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:09 am
had to finally comment on this site after reading the lists for months.
I really liked The Others; it’s the only entry I somewhat disagree with, but I see everyone’s points. Actually 5 of the entries I’ve never seen.
The movies I have always felt were way overrated:
Raging Bull-finally rented it years ago, feeling guilty I had never seen it, and sat there bored to tears.
and one of the biggest pieces of crap I’ve ever sat through:
Starship Troopers! One of the only times I considered turning off a movie becuase it was so bad. But I paid for the rental, so I sat there and watched the whole stupid thing.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:09 am
To be honest, Titanic should have been all ten entries.
I did not enjoy it.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:11 am
ReHunt:
It’s also extremely anti-intellectual … All the good things happen to the stupid guy while all the bad things happen to the smart girl.
Jenny’s not exactly the epitome of smarts in that movie. At all. I think you missed the point.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:11 am
“Donnie Darko” should be on the list.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Ok, some may say Starship Troopers is not considered a “great” movie so it can’t be overrated, but I hear people say they enjoyed it, and they’ve made a few sequels, so someone thinks it is good…
Another one that people like and I never understood:
Rush Hour.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:12 am
I’d agree with pretty much this whole list. I liked Reservoir Dogs, but I would say it was overrated. Scarface was definitely overrated, but I saw that, too – and Pacino’s “Say hello to my little friend” really capped it nicely. Good list and I’m sure there’s a bunch more you could add – I’d add Legends of the Fall.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:15 am
Jamie, great list! I was so afraid it was going to be another IMBD based list, that I almost skipped it. I’m glad I didn’t.
I think I’d have put Titanic at #1, rather than Apocalypse Now, even though A.N. is truly a highly overrated film, which seemed to pay little but acquaintance with “Heart of Darkness”, itself a book of questionable background and parentage.
Scarface, for it’s time, was a true breakthrough film, but doesn’t hold up today.
Though I loved Shakespeare in Love, and all of the “in” jokes that only the true Shakespearean fans would get, I have to agree that it was a fire which burned brightly, but not too long.
That Star Trek thing. Thankfully, I did not see it.
As to the rest, they all deserve their place on the list. Not because they were bad movies, as you said, but because they simply didn’t deserve the hype.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:20 am
The Dark Knight didn’t make the list?
August 26th, 2008 at 9:25 am
i thought it was a pretty good list
except resevouir dogs
i love tarantino movies, maybe im just a little biased
August 26th, 2008 at 9:28 am
but i am very happy pulpfiction wasnt on there
thats my all-time favorite movie
August 26th, 2008 at 9:29 am
I agree with it totally, there should be a ‘most quotable movie’ list, a lot of these could be on /that/
August 26th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Totally agree with Scarface. Carlito’s Way is much better.
I do disagree with Resevoir Dogs, though. That is my favorite Tarantino film.
I woul also add that Shakespeare in Love, while hardly a great film, is most definitely not forgotten. It’s pretty good as far as melodramatic films with little regard for history go.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Titanic is the only one i would agree with.
I don’t think “The Others” belongs on this list. I didn’t think it was a very good movie, but i don’t recall it getting any kind of great acclaim to put it on a list of movies that are overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:34 am
i think what made everyone fustrated in the comments on this list is the fact that people absolutely hate other peoples opinions when it comes to movies, if it happens to clash with theirs, yet their own views are always right
August 26th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Just to kick the proverbial dead horse, I think more than half of these are not overrated, and are in fact wonderful movies.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Do you even watch movies? Apocalypse Now is a classic and Drab is Gay.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Half of these movies do NOT belong on this list.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Another very subjective list.
Sometimes when I think a movie is overrated I give it another chance and watch it again after all the hype is over and when I’m in a better mood.
I think the frame of mind you are in at the time you see a movie is very important.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:49 am
I hate to add this, since I love it so much, but 300 should be here. I love it, it is probably my favorite movie, but it’s not really a classic of cinema as much as it is an orgy of violence.
I’ve never seen a second of Titanic! Go me!
August 26th, 2008 at 9:51 am
This is one of the worst lists ever put together. The person is completely clueless about movies and puts classics like Apocalypse Now, Clerks, Scarface and Resevoir Dogs on when there are SOOOOO MANY more craptastically awful movies that are way overrated. I’m not saying these are the greatest movies of all time but their individual greatnesses are not overrated at all. What about the Oceans Remakes? What about most anything Halle Barry is in? What about Wedding Crashers and any new Adam Sandler movie?
August 26th, 2008 at 9:53 am
I just want to add, also, that if there’s even one human being on the planet who says that Southside Tales is a good movie, it is the most vastly overrated piece of cinematic shit in the history of Hollywood. Can we cuss here?
August 26th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Oh, yeah, going a step further on what El Vlad says…
The line about Scarface not being a hit if it was a new release? Are you insane, Article Author? It would be a megahit.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:55 am
#199 scottyjohnston: You make a good point there, man.
I am not sure if this film was mentioned or not, but what about….wait for it…
Borat
Sasha Baron Cohen was a very funny guy about 5 years ago when he was portraying Ali G and other various characters on his show on HBO. What really stood out to me is the fact that he was virtually unknown back then and most of the people that he interviewed and had as guests on his show actually believed that they were being interviewed by a real person.
A lot of the time when Hollywood gets ahold of something unique they tend to take off running like a bat out of hell with their latest idea and (metaphorically speaking) stab us to death with it.
and, of course, my commentary is all a matter of personal preference.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:01 am
i think i’m the only human beeing who liked titanic.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Apocalypse Now? Boring? Overrated? Sorry, but I can’t take a word you say seriously from now on.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:06 am
miki* I loved it! I cried
August 26th, 2008 at 10:10 am
I’ll never understand people’s fascination with Scarface. It was okay at best and the hype surrounding it even today is absolutely ridiculous. I think Pacino is a great actor, but Scarface is DEFINITELY at home on this list.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:11 am
#1 loved it,#2loved it,#3Hated it,#4&5didnt see either one,#6loved it,#7&8 didnt see either,#9&10loved them.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:12 am
GREAT LIST!!!
But why has no one mentioned
American History X???
I mean really, that is some of the WORST acting I have EVER seen. I think it gets alot of praise because of it’s “contiversialness” (if that’s even a word…) but really, TERRIBLE acting, and the plot is so played out (aside from the skinhead thing) it’s ridiculous.
I’m glad people mentioned Saving Private Ryan, but am disappointed it didn’t make the list. Really, the opening scene is good, save the continuancy errors and forget the fact that there were NO FLAMETHROWERS ON D-DAY. But the rest of the movie sucks. “Okay, let’s argue about the morality of our mission that is completley far-fetched and would never happen anyway…” oh yeah, and MATT DAMON.
Scarface is overrated. It’s sad to see how such a shallow movie affects EVERY teenage drug dealer these days.
Whoever said that Natural Born Killers is overated missed the point. Watch it with director commentary.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:19 am
What I’m most afraid of is that Jamie seems interested in motivating endless debate over a very (VERY) subjective theme, when there are so many other subjects worthy of lengthy and cultured discussion that wouldn’t rely on personal tastes so much.
Well, whatever pays the bills, then…
August 26th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Thats what I was suggesting earlier and I got criticised for it.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:23 am
5. jfrater – August 26th, 2008 at 3:30 am
For the record guys – and to show that I am not biased when I publish submissions – 5 of the films on this list are favorites of mine!
>
Did Jamie ever say which five are among his favorites? I have positive feelings for: Reservoir Dogs, Shakespeare in Love, Clerks, and Chicago. I acknowledge the greatness of Apocalypse Now, but agree to a certain extent with the list maker on this one.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:23 am
What with all the babble about the Godfather over Scarface?
Scarface had poor dialogue, a cliche, everyday story, and only 2 or 3 memorable moments in the 4+ hour movie…not to mention that the violence was what made it watchable anyway (which, to me, is a waste of time).
The godfather on the other hand, is brilliant, vibrant, and the setting and time is perfect. The acting is brilliant, with colorful, realistic dialogue. Sure, both use the “F” word alot, but that shouldnt be included in either, because that’s how they talk…
August 26th, 2008 at 10:26 am
FACE PALM
August 26th, 2008 at 10:27 am
The only movie that should be on this list is Chicago. The others either set some precedence in film and/or were very entertaining (isn’t that what a film should be?!).
August 26th, 2008 at 10:29 am
i really agree with almost everything on this list. actually, i havent seen most of the movies on this list but thats probably for a good reason.
Scarface is a horrible movie. I’m sure for guys in their teens and twenties it’s amazing, in fact my ex boyfriend (age 23) has a full sleeve on his arm of Tony and thinks it’s the coolest tattoo ever, but that movie is crap and all swearing and violence: not the make of a good movie.
As for Titanic, however, I completely 100% disagree with it being on this list. It had a nine month showing for a reason. That movie is a amazing, I could watch it 5 times in a row and not get bored. I could see some geeky guys not liking it for some reason, probably for the ‘romance’ but just because it’s not your type of movie, does not mean that it’s overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Great list – Titanic might have been over rated at the time but it made megga bucks, one of the biggest money spinners of that era.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:36 am
Excellent list. 2 of these movies we inherited on dvd, and still haven’t been desperate enough to shove into the machine on a boring 115 degree weather day.
Now if my eldest daughter was a listverse reader she would probably have strong feelings about the entry of “Clerks”, but she’s not. So “oh well”.
Thanks Shane!!
August 26th, 2008 at 10:37 am
23. Garrett – August 26th, 2008 at 4:34 am:
Star wars?!!! are you kidding me? have you ever watched it? i dont think you have because if you had… you would never think such an amazing story, plot, special effects, acting, etc was OVERRATED.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Oh dear. The day Listverse slumped to a low by posting opinion as fact.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:48 am
People just admit it Scarface is a horrible movie. I don’t even know where to start with why it sucks but the main thing is the suspension of belief. A lot of movies use it, but not to this level, in real life or any other movie for that matter, Tony Montana would have been shot to death in the first 5 minutes.
Also on the list should be 300, the Kill Bills, Borat, Napoleon Dynamite and No Country for Old Men.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:50 am
stupid list … who made this anyways!?!? there’s no such thing as overrated. some movies are good and some are bad and this list is a list of good movies, nothing overrated about em. thanks for wasting my time.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:50 am
190. BornTooLate:
Starship troopers sequels are bullshit
But the first one is hilarious. That guy with the head wide open and Ricco crying “MEDIIIIC!!”, great scene.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:57 am
yes this was a good list. i do question reservoir dogs but hey once i do think about it, it was like a spin off of pulp fiction. but hey quentin is a genius!
great list!
August 26th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Interesting list to say the least.
I half-ass agree with some of your assessments but I am curious as to the criteria used to pick the movies. For instance how can Star Trek IV be over-rated? I don’t know anyone, even trekkies, who rated that movie very highly to begin with.
Same sort of disagreement with Clerks; I thought it’s fame more to do with the fact that it is at least as good or better than most Hollywood fare and was done by a funny fat-guy with his own money. It was funny as hell by the way, left me in tears more than once. For 27 Grand. pfft, a mere pittance.
Reservoir Dogs not worth the hype? The dialogue not good enough? Sorry but the scene in the Diner all by itself makes it worthy of whatever current acclaim it now has.
Apocalypse Now over-rated? Come now, even if you exclude Marlon Brando (how could you?) and probably Martin Sheen’s pivotal achievement, you still have Robert Duvall to contend with. Who can forget his total indifference to the mortar bombing and gunfire all around him? Strolling towards the beach to see Lance surf? Classic stuff.
I know diddly squat about movies, my interest is purely for entertainment, but even so I’m sure that there are more appropriate choices than the one’s I’ve mentioned.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:02 am
I understand that you don’t like some of the movies, but saying Titanic is overrated is a bit harsh and vindictive. Sure women liked it, but women only account for about 50% of the population and yet this movie kicked the Dark Knight’s sorry butt in the box office. Sorry the truth hurts, but Titanic is a GREAT movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:04 am
#1 Lord of the Rings.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:05 am
jfrater: This list is becoming a candidate for Yet Another Top 10 Comments
Just an idea.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:07 am
All that criticism can be, apart from some kind of general consensus, is speaking personally. The personal opinion may have more or less weight depending on who is speaking and their relation to, and knowledge of the subject. My own two whatsits worth sees me as one with a fairly low critical threshhold who takes what comes along at its face value. Sometimes I just latch onto something that’s passing by, sometimes I seek out specifically what is regarded as a *goodie*. Beyond that I decide whether I want to continue watching, and afterwards whether it was worth watching. Nevertheless, if I pick up a weekly magazine in the doctor’s waiting room and read an entertaining and well-written story, I won’t dismiss it or rubbish it because it doesn’t stand up against ‘Hamlet’. That’s my approach to such lists.
Having said that, I am pretty shocked by films that were *bettered* by some of these. It’s not quite the same as awarding the Nobel to my waiting room novelette, but some strike me as coming pretty close to its having been judged the equivalent best for the Booker or Pulitzer!
August 26th, 2008 at 11:10 am
It seems to me that most guys will say they love Scarface, The Godfather, etc because they’re afraid that they’re REAL favorite movies aren’t “cool” or “manly” enough.
I have no desire to watch Scarface for the following reasons -
1. It is old.
2. Not my cup of tea.
3. People exaggerating about how good the movie is.
What about The Empire Strikes Back ? That was always the most boring Star Wars movie when I was young. I prefer Return of The Jedi as it has more aliens (yes that is my reason).
August 26th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Well…no one DARE say they don’t agree with Dischuker (#83)!! Let’s just all be glad his favorite isn’t Scarface or he’d probably stalk/torture jfrater until the list was deleted…seriously is the word “opinion” in your vocabulary? You’re worse than a critic! Great acting and story aren’t going to make a movie perfect. Everyone’s got their own ideas of what makes a good movie. Personally I like a lot of newer mainstream movies aswell as lesser known ‘nothing special’ movies. You can go like what you like but don’t bring your annoying bias in here. It stinks.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Patty: I agree Titanic was good, but it was *definitely* overrated. There was so much hype about it that it nearly killed my desire to see it. Also – it may be kicking The Dark Knight’s butt after *11* years, but The Dark Knight has only been out just over 2 months and has been the quickest to reach $200m (5 days), $300m (10 days), and $400m (18 days, took Titanic 66 days)… Titanic holds the spots for $500m at 98 days, but with TDK at $489m now, I think it’ll take that spot, too. Okay, enough stats, enough said.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:22 am
boaby: My husband doesn’t care to see Scarface either, so I understand.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:25 am
I don´t see the point of a list like this. Most of the lists in this site you have learnt something after the reading, but not in this one.
¿What does anybody care if some guy thinks Apocalypse Now is overrated? I would like the author to keep this kind of thing to the IMDB boards, where it belongs.
Lists like this shouldn´t be admitted, IMO, because we would end up with endless “my favorite/least favorite…” lists which don´t really belong here.
Just my opinion.
Saludos
August 26th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Thanks for seconding me on the Titanic the producers – director and most of the cast, where pushing their wheelbarrows to the bank.
Thanks again Patty
August 26th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Hey everyone, just because a move is “overrated” doesn’t mean they think it’s bad. It just means that they think it isn’t as good as most other people say.
Other overrated movies:
Fight Club
Saving Private Ryan
Forrest Gump
American History X
Braveheart
Gladiator
Pirates of the Caribbean (all of them)
Crash
The Usual Suspects
Please note that some of the films I listed I actually like, in varying degrees, but do not think they deserve the hype that surrounds them.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Great list. Of the ones that I’ve seen, I definitely have to agree. I do like Clerks though…
August 26th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Wow, Shane Dayton… it appears that your opinion, obtuse as it may be, takes the lion’s share of commentary on the list’s content. I’m not sure whether to laugh or simply shrug and wander away. I suppose it’s nice to see that you have an opinion on the topic of ‘most overrated’ movies of modern times, but I see precious little convincing evidence to support anything said about most (if not all) of the top ten listed here.
How about such movies as Tropic Thunder, 10,000 BC, Moonstruck, Escape From New York…? I could go on for a while here… I guess the point of ‘most overrated’ should be looking at something other than someone’s pure opinion. Truth is, there are thousands upon thousands of other lists about precisely this subject. Why should we care about this one?
If you want to put together a thoughtful list that makes sense and is defensible beyond ‘I think…’, you may want to closely consider such criteria as: 1) how it performed in the box office versus what the promoters expected? 2) how well has it stood the test of time (even brief timeline) for viewership? 3) How much was spent on promoting the movie versus how much it took in during the ‘prime’ release period? 4) of the popular pundits and movie reviewers at the time, what was the majority consensus? 5) Did the movie flop entirely opening week, or was it pulled from the theaters earlier than expected? I’m sure you can come up with many more valid criteria from here… I’ll not bore anyone any longer here.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Interesting……..
August 26th, 2008 at 11:46 am
I feel as though this list is purely opinion based.
Maybe if you based your choices on those of noteworthy critics it would have some basis….
But here’s just a personal list by one person.
BTW, I love The Others and Shakespear in Love.
Titantic though, I think that’s the only one that belongs here.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Great list! Always looking foward to your future lists!
August 26th, 2008 at 11:49 am
I agree with Training Day, but think that Reservoir Dogs, Clerks and Apocalypse Now aren’t overrated. They could be replaced by Midnight Cowboy – which is an absolutely terrible and incredibly boring movie (that won best picture). Also, I was not aware that Star Trek IV and the Others were thought of very highly in the first place.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
The entire list of “Saw” movies should be up there… Nearly everyone I know who have seen it go on and on about how good it was. I got bored of it and jumped to another movie when I went to the theater to see the first one.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
As a former convenience store clerk, I LOVED Clerks. One of my managers (now my good friend and roommate) made me watch it shortly after I started working with him, and I laughed through the whole thing.
I haven’t seen any of the other films on this list except Shakespeare in Love (which I enjoyed).
I don’t have the same hate for this list that everyone else seems to, but I disagree with a few choices based on what I have heard friends/relatives say about certain movies. I know that Apocalypse Now is one of the most famous war movies ever made, even if I haven’t watched it. How could something so widely respected be overrated? I think everyone’s idea of “overrated” is different.
I hope LV starts to focus more on fact-based lists rather than those based on opinions. In the name of the FSM, no more film lists! (Unless you’re listing them by something that can be measured and considered as FACT, like earnings or number of awards or something!)
August 26th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
I still don’t see what all the fuss is about when it comes to Pulp Fiction.
The only one I think shouldn’t be on the list is the Kevin Smith movie.
Seriously, who had done that before him? To that degree?
August 26th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Training Day does not deserve this list not even a little.
Neither does Clerks.
But The Others should have been number 1 by far, you can figure out the ‘twist’ 10 minutes into the movie.
I would have liked to see The Godfather in here though.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
My picks for most overrated:
Sci-fi: Star Wars. A plot that is nothing more than the largest collection of Sword and Sorcery cliches ever put together.
Fantasy: LOTR. Not a single character there has an IQ above ten. And there’s nothing there that remotely qualifies as characterization. The plot? It doesn’t actually have one.
Superheroes: Superman. Yeah, the first one. Worst plot in the history of cinema. The whole reverse-time-by-reversing-earth’s-rotation alone should’ve earned it a razzie for worst screenplay of the decade. Yet that’s only the third most retarded moment in the film. You know something went horribly wrong when you have a story about a man whose idea of a disguise is to wear glasses and this doesn’t even make it to the top ten of the stupidest ideas in the movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
I went into Citizen Kane thinking… how could this movie NOT be overrated? A movie that gets number one on every list can’t possibly be as good as they say it is. Odd logic perhaps, but that was my reasoning. Then I saw it. And I freaking loved it. An unexpected outcome for sure

When it comes to Titanic, I really don’t think it counts as overrated anymore. I mean look at the comments here. Two, maybe three people were willing to admit they liked it? I personally ended up getting backlash from the backlash. The more people insult it, the more I think of reasons why it wasn’t that bad at all. I remember coming out of the theater after Titanic thinking, that was quite good. No, it didn’t deserve a billion Oscars, but surely we can get over that by now? Good cast, decent story, some truly poignant moments (the people in the lifeboats having to listen to their friends and family scream in the freezing water always stayed with me as a particularly horrible reminder of what they went through). Sure it turned Leo into a heartthrob, but he eventually crawled out from under that and made some really excellent films. As did Kate Winslet. Titanic no longer counts as overrated when everyone in the world seems to hate it
The rest of the movies I don’t have much problem with, though Clerks seems a bit unfair, since considering the conditions they made it in, it is pretty darn good. And I’ve never even heard of that Star Trek, so not sure why it is overrated. Is it rated at all? I would also put a few of the Star Wars movies on there. I love action and sci fi movies new and old, but Star Wars was always a bit bleh to me.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Is it bad that i have nearly half of these films?
August 26th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
240. Funny name, stupid comment.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Notes: I need to chill with the smileys
I doubt comment number 215 is who he says he is
I totally agree with Cheeshy (182, 184)
Al Pacino has made some terrible films lately, don’t take Scarface away from him!
August 26th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Good for you for posting a list you knew would cause such controversey! Very good list, and just because a movie is overrated, doesn’t mean it sucks! Love Scarface, but definately overrated!
August 26th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
I always thought Clerks was overrated, and I havn’t seen half of the film on this list. Althought I did like The Others, and I thought Reservoir Dogs wasn’t as good as Pulp Fiction.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Surprisingly non-controversial in my book.
I’d have replaced Apocalypse Now (which I maintain is brilliant) with The Usual Suspects (which I maintain is outright bad), but other than that solid choices.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Yogi: I didn’t say which were the ones I liked – they are: Reservoir Dogs, the Others, Scarface, Apocalypse Now, and Clerks (which I own in a special edition set on DVD)!
August 26th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
jfrater – “stupid, stupid list. I wouldn’t have bothered to read it.” Why did you put it up then?
August 26th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Phil: that wasn’t me – someone posted under my nick. I have removed the comment.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
I very much agree about Scarface. There are way way way better mafia movies, and the hype around this one is just creep. The gas station down the street from my house sells Scarface Throw BLANKETS. Its creepy.
i don’t think that I could put together a list of 10 overrated films. I couldn’t stop at 10…. ha ha ha
August 26th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Sorry mate, should have known.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Sorry but CK is completely overrated in my opinion.
People tend to put it on their list to appear more intelligent. Way ahead of its time-yes. Good now? NO
August 26th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
I loved Clerks, although I first saw it in the 90’s. Remember to take into context the time period in which the films were made – Apocalypse Now doesn’t mean as much now as it did back in 79 when the US was barely out of Vietnam. I do hate Superbad though – way overrated (except McLovin, of course)!
August 26th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Juno Juno JUNO!
August 26th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
yeah i agree all of those are overrated especially scarface, titanic, and shakespeare in love.. and over rated doesnt mean bad.. reservoir dogs and clerks are both good films
August 26th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I didn’t think that Titanic was that overrated, but, then again, I am only 15…
August 26th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
I didn’t think that Titanic was THAT overrated. Then again, I am only 15…
August 26th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
good list, I went batshit crazy at Clerks though, I am a huge Kevin Smith fan, but a decent list otherwise.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I never knew any Star Trek movie was highly rated to begin with. Don’t see how this one could be overrated.
I’m not a fan of Scarface. That chain saw scene is the second most sadistic thing I’ve ever seen.(Passion of the Christ, the whole movie)
August 26th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Napoleon Dynamite.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
I’m just confused as to what the writer (or the commenters) think “rated” movies are. We seem to be confusing good/bad with overrated in the comments and I’m guilty of it too. So here’s my take:
Chicago was marketed for awhile before it came out and had a lot of hype surrounding it, and when I saw it I thought it was filmed well, the transitions were good, and it was well acted and well sung/danced. It lived up to the hype for me, so I wouldn’t call it overrated.
I had heard how well Denzel did in Training Day and how gritty and “real” it was, so I went to see that. I hated it. However, it was well acted, well filmed, I just really didn’t like it and I don’t think Denzel deserved an award for it. But I could still see why so many people were talking about it, so I don’t think I’d call that overrated either.
So…I don’t know. This list just feels contrived for comments to me. Overrated is one of those overused phrases like literally. “Dude, I’m LITERALLY burning up.” No..you aren’t. It’s just hot in here. Both words have lost meaning.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
253. Nelia…When it comes to Titanic, I really don’t think it counts as overrated anymore. I mean look at the comments here. Two, maybe three people were willing to admit they liked it?
****
Nelia, I don’t know about other’s reasons, but I have seen two earlier versions, one made in the 40’s sometime, and 1958’s A Night to Remember. Neither had the advantage of all of the special effects and CGI, but both, particularly the earliest one, were just flat-out better movies…they had more reality of emotion, I guess is where I’m going.
I admit Titanic was awesome to watch, visually, but I never believed a second of it, I mean, here was a tragic, tragic incident, and all we ended up with was an unbelievable love story.
I know that puts me in the minority of women.
And it’s not that I have anything against Leonardo diCaprio, either. I loved Gangs of New York!
August 26th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Surely there is a difference between being badly acted, badly scripted, bad cinematography, violence, language, chick flick, guy flick, or just simply not your kind of a movie, etc., and being overrated? Perhaps I’ve got it all wrong but one of the most overrated movies I’ve seen was Mrs. Doubtfire. It wasn’t a great movie, the premise wasn’t earth shattering, the acting was ok, but the hype that went on and on before the movie was released was huge. And every single joke in the movie was in the trailers. Every one. When you watched the movie you knew exactly what was coming and didn’t even laugh ’cause you’ve seen it couple of hundred times already. That’s what I think is overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Shane Dayton is a fuggin’ moron. Take a class you chump.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Segue: I loved Gangs of New York too! But frankly I don’t believe Leo was the reason. He could have been replaced quite easily. But Daniel Day Lewis? His performance could not have been replaced or improved upon. Amazing actor.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
deepseabattles: Thank you very much for your reasoned response. Who’s the moron? I’m pretty sure the only one confused about that particular issue is yourself.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
I forgot about Napoleon Dynamite!!!
What was up with that movie? I saw t-shirts all over the place. Everybody was talking about it. I finally watched it and laughed once. (when they shot the cow while the school bus drove past)
August 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Y’know.. I was looking at the headline and thinking they’d be wrong, but.. dammit, I can’t. Not even a bit. Well thought-out list, IMHO.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Oh God titanic is horrible. I do like apocalypse now though. I thought the Deer Hunter was rather overrated. Intentionally grueling is still grueling.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
My personal list of films that I would like to deduct from the producer’s life the time I wasted watching (some have already been mentioned):
Silence of the Lambs (ooh, he eats people!)
American Beauty (ooh, he’s a pedophile!)
L.A. Confidential (way too obvious)
Chinatown (what? oh, it can happen in Chinatown)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (they got the eternal part right)
2001: A Space Odyssey (what? oh wait….what? wow, the colors, man!)
There Will Be Blood (2+ hours for a 5 minute payoff)
Unforgiven (see: There Will Be Blood)
Fargo (crappy movie in disguise, ya.. ya.)
Gladiator (glad I’ll never watch it again)
Stand by Me (pez is a fine candy, but no basis for a movie)
all from the IMDB Top 250
And I have to add, because I just hate them so much:
The Usual Suspects (Kaizer SoWhat – no twist, just a lot of runaround)
Fight Club (see: the Usual Suspects)
August 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
This is great, I’m getting all kinds of ideas for movies to put in my queue on blockbuster.com. I just added Gangs of New York, which reminded me I wanted to see In the Name of the Father again and then I remembered I never saw Diary of the Dead.
Callie #274 I too hate it when people use the word litrally like that. I’m going to literally shit if people don’t agree that Crash, Million Dollar Baby, I Am Legend, On Golden Pond and The Big Chill were also overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
I couldnt agree with this list more! Another two i would add would be “Eagle vs Shark” and “Georgia Rules”… man what a waste of time! I want those hours of my life back!!
August 26th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
BishopWhiteT ~ what alternate universe do you live in??
August 26th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Yeah – I agree with most of these – I saw The Others and actually really liked it, but was not surprised at the “twist” ending. Though still, it was a decent film. Titanic was by far VERY OVERRATED!!! I never understood how it got so big! But, I admit to liking it though – not the best of all time films, but come on – people loved it, it’s just not cool to admit it . . .
August 26th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
It seems to me that the detractors of Apocalypse Now mention the movie being too long and boring. It offends me that people would dispraise a film because of their own lack of patience and short attention span. If they don’t have the patience to watch a long movie, they obviously don’t have the patience to read. An earlier commentor said that only men like that movie. False, I showed that movie to my own mother and she liked it.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I will never look at this site again thanks to the fact that people are saying “The Godfather.” Absolutely ridiculous!!! Anyone that mentions that as one of the most overrated movies is absolutely mentally handicapped.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I agree with this list completely, specially I didn’t get any clue as to why #4 and #5 were held at top by the academy. I would have voted for “American History X” and “The Pianist”, not that it would have counted
.
Jamie, do you have a list of overrated actors? I think likes of Russell Crowe (except for his performances in Beautiful mind and perhaps Gladiator), Tom Cruise, Keanu Reaves would feature in that list. No doubt they have acted in some good movies but in general they are not as good actors as they are considered. May be Russell Crowe could be left out from that list…but there would be plenty others to qualify for that list.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Years ago I watched “The Unforgiven” with Clint Eastwood. I thought it was the most boring movie I had ever seen. When I found out it won 4 Oscars, I was just boggled.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
CRASH should be on the list, both versions, Cronenberg and Haggis
August 26th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Agreed, CRASH by Cronenberg is quite overated, Talking about overrated: “The Big Lebowski”, gosh, it ain’t funny, it ain’t fun to watch, it ain’t good.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
You’re not right. Not even a little bit.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Any movie that stars Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, Nicolas Cage, John Travolta or has the names Baldwin/Cusack/Arquette associated with it…is without question overrated!
They don’t make too many GOOD movies anymore. There are too many movies nowadays that add too much unnecessary sex and violence for the purpose of supporting their already weak plot-lines to a dumbed-down audience. The movie industry shouldn’t be insulting our intelligence the way it has been for the last 30 years or so. We need more movies that stimulate our thoughts, opinions and dreams.
Oh, ‘Scarface’ and ‘The Others’ were great flicks! Good list.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
yeh pretty dumb list. Just because you don’t have enough of an attention span to watch certain great movies (Apocalypse Now) doesn’t mean their overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
I’ve never really been a fan of haggis – a bit chewy and gets stuck in the teeth.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
There are a lot of overrated movies but I think that Crash was a painfully horrible movie. It was basically a film written from Hollywood’s view of things and I found it to be insultingly racist and I am white. It was just silly that it seemed like whoever wrote was completely out of touch with society other than Hollywood society, which then agreed by giving it the Oscar.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Here we are with 300 comments now, and still we have so many ‘I liked’ and ‘I hated’ comments, when we’ve seen precious little detail on how it is that this or that movie is/was overrated. Where be the comparators?
August 26th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Wow I hate all these movies except for The other never seen it
August 26th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Mom424, I agree. Danial Day Lewis couldn’t be replaced in anything he ever did by anyone, anytime, anywhere! I am in complete awe of the man’s talent.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
I do rate haggis but not overly.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
I simply can’t agree that Clerks is overrated.
If you expect it to be something that it isn’t, than I suppose. What it is, though, is a story. Driven with good dialogue, with occasional forays into the scatoligical surrealism that is Jay.
August 26th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Wow – I have to say I am stunned by the reactions of some of the commenters here – movie lists are almost always subjective. I even said early on in the comments that 5 of the films on this list are my favorites. Despite that, I am not dissing all the people who say they agree completely with the list – I realize we all have different taste. It is a shame that this list didn’t start a conversation on what we should classify as overrated and instead turned in to a name calling session!
August 26th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
If you had to take two different sequels onto convenient desert island with a Blue Ray player…………
August 26th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Shakespeare in Love sucked. I’m a girl and typically, I like chick flicks, but I couldn’t even fathom why SiL won Best Picture. Really? Best Picture!?
August 26th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
well.. yea interesting choices.. overrated list maybe?
August 26th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
No film with Dame Judy Dench involved can be all bad. (Relaxes, sits back and awaits brickbats for Dame Judy.)
August 26th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
How is 2001: A Space Odyssey not on this list?
August 26th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Wow, already more posts than my list got. 307 comments and no Randall.
Bucslim @ 83: No time now. I’ll get back to you on that.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
PS Jamie: no more movie lists for a while. Or maybe you are deliberately courting controversy
August 26th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
The only part I liked in Titanic was when Leonardo DiCaprio dies. Great list!
August 26th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Although I do believe Scarface was a great movie because of the action sequences and it should not be on this list, I do have to say that it was a bit cheesy when you think about it. Some things were way overdone , like the guy with the chainsaw , wtf? The story was great about the rise and fall of tony montana ( wierd name for a Cuban) but I always wonder why he was killed off.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Denzel won an Oscar in 1989 for best supporting role in “Glory”.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
“a lot of this film is based on “tricks” like the non-chronological order and flashbacks, which are used as style choices to hide plot deficiencies.”
Welll… duh? It would suck if the story ran chronologically, as would Pulp Fiction. As would the English Patient. As would Citizen Kane. You can hardly call the film “overrated” for the stylistic flourishes they use.
My God, this list is a mind-bender. I move that it be housed in the “Opinion” section, rather than the “Movies” section, as that is all it really is.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
There is no way Shakespeare in Love could’ve beaten Saving Private Ryan without the judges having smoked some bad stuff. I’ve been hating the Academy ever since. ._.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
“This was terribly acted, stilted, and somehow managed to be ludicrously over dramatic without any drama.”
Were we watching the same film?
August 26th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
how dare you put Titanic on this list! lol jk. it IS my favorite movie though
and The Others was good too
August 26th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
I have to agree with most of these choices. I like all the movies on this list too though. If you are going to criticize Clerks though you have to call out the weak acting, not the funny dialogue and jokes. Although I was bored to sleep twice while trying to watch Apocalypse Now.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
t_man, when leo dies is one of the only parts I liked too, but the scene where the guy jumps of the top of the boat and hits the propeller causing him to flip over and over is the best part.
August 26th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Reading half of the comments on this list made me realise that they´ll let anyone near a computer nowadays.
boaby – won´t watch Scarface because it is old? Are you referring to the the 1932 Howard Hawks version? 25 years isn´t old.
BishopWhiteT – are you happy keeping these guys employed?
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0294997/
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0783536/
Matheusvalente – you poor soul. If you couldn´t find fun in the Big Lebowski, you must have a pretty depressing life.
Pretty crap list though, only Titanic and Clerks were on the money
August 26th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
jfrater: Although movie lists can be considered subjective, most lists I’ve seen in the site have some sort of criteria about their choices explained in the intro (I’ve even defended a recent movie list by explaining the criteria it was based on).
But this one doesn’t seem to have any criteria, or at least Shane failed to mention it. That’s why this particular list seems to be so subjective and apparently defined by the author’s personal tastes. And hence all the chances to get opinionated and critical of it by the commenters.
Or did you expect us to reach 300 comments only by discuss the definition of ‘overrated’? Weird plan…
August 26th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
*discussing >.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
#296. landocommando
yeh pretty dumb list. Just because you don’t have enough of an attention span…
****
quote “This doesn’t mean all these movies are terrible – in fact many of them will be personal favorites of other movie fans. That being said, even good or fun movies can be badly overrated. This is a list of the ten most overrated movies in modern times.” end quote
lando, you might want to actually READ what the list is about before you spout off.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
You forgot the Orson Welles film “The whore farts at midnight” Now that is an overrated movie
August 26th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
I love how several list commenters like to tell us whether or not they have seen a certain movie. Really?
If a ListVerse list contains several movies, books, plays, operas, cartoon, etc. Please do not feel obligated to let us know whether you have seen it/read it/played with it…and so on.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Anon: Dame Judi Dench. And I didn’t even have to look it up.
Played the Queen. And of course M in all the current James Bond flicks.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
i completely forgot about shakespeare in love…
August 26th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
I don’t know if it has been brought up yet because I didn’t go through all of the previous posts, but Apocalypse Now is number 4 on the list of Cinematographic Masterpieces. There seems to be a bit of a contradiction.
http://listverse.com/entertainment/top-10-cinematographic-masterpieces/
August 26th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
No Country for old me belongs on that list and I think some of them are just a matter of taste. I liked three of those!
August 26th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Jfrater #304:
Well, I both agree & disagree. I agree that it’s surprising that more people didn’t pick up on the list’s vague selection criteria. Unless we know more about the source & degree of the supposed overrating, it’s difficult to argue against. I think The Others is a pretty good film, for instance. Is someone going around saying it’s very good, or excellent, or unimprovably brilliant? If so, who, & which? And, for that matter, why?
I disagree that selection criteria should themselves form the basis of discussion, however. I don’t think that subjective criteria are necessarily a problem. But lists compiled according to unclear criteria are becoming endemic hereabouts, & comments on them tend to become spiteful & petty — not to mention lordly, arrogant & long-winded. (Not that having clear & factual criteria will always allow a list to avoid that kind of crap. Look at what happened with ‘The Top 10 Least Popular Oscar Winners’. Oh well.)
That said, where are Forrest Gump & A Beautiful Mind? 2 examples of Hollywood at its most dishonest. How real is all that horrible worthiness? I’ve never figured out to what extent grossly sentimental movies like these 2 are cynically manipulative as well. A recent contender has to be There Will Be Blood. Fabulous cinematography & all the rest of it, but DDL’s performance in the film — hamming it up like Donald Wolfit reincarnated — was embarrassing to watch.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Wow 330 plus comments.
This list could be on a “Top 10 Overrated Movie List”
Seriously though it did spawn some interesting and colorful comments
August 26th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
cass, (321),
“Reading half of the comments on this list made me realise that they´ll let anyone near a computer nowadays.”
Oh I like it, I like it. Well said. Untie my hands at once!
August 26th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I think you missed a lot of those obvious Oscar bait films that are really just boring dramas that don’t do a good job of getting (a sometimes poignant) point across…movies like The English Patient, that won Best Picture but sounds so mindnumbing to me that I will never, ever see it.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
A very recent movie that is way overrated is The Dark Night. It’s not as good as everyone says it is. Although Heath Ledger is really good in it the movie as a whole was average. Christian Bale was very bad in it.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Mom, (327),
If you fight your way through the postings thicket to here
I recommend you not to miss ‘Notes to a Scandal’ whatever you do. One of DJD’s best in my ‘umble opinion.
“Played the Queen.”
Before anyone comes back at you, I know you mean QE1 in Amorous Shakey. QE2 in the eponymous movie was of course another of our finest, Helen Mirren, hopefully not too far off her deserved damehood for that. Apparently the Royal-Real Thing greatly enjoyed it, or “We are amused”, if you prefer. I believe She invited Helen round for tea and a chat.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
I just fed “underrated” into the LV search mode and came up with nothing titular on films/movies. Treats in store?
August 26th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
This list was made for all those people who comment to disagree with the list. If you think so strongly that it’s not overrated, that probably means it’s overrated.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
This is a surprisingly good list. For once its a movie list not focused on movies that are 50+ years old. I have to say I disagree with clerks being on here, but I do understand why it was put on here. Other than that its on point.
August 26th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Well, personally i can agree on a few select that of -Shakespeare in Love- an -Apocolypse Now- but ScarFace that was a pretty darn good film, then an now still.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
I for one think “Training Day” was a VERY GOOD movie. Denzel obviously gave an Oscar worthy performance.
Scarface is actually too overrated and so is Titanic.
Clerks is okay but Clerks 2 is hilarious.
I agree on Reservoir Dogs. Pulp Fiction is much better.
Haven’t really watched any of the other movies…
August 26th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
come on man… pacino?… and yeah, i still think titanic should be #1 in the list…good thing it was based on a true catastrophic event or we’re lookin’ at a trilogy here. God help us.
August 26th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
good list (except apocalypse now even being on it, let alone number one.) also, i find pulp fiction to be far more overrated than reservior dogs – the reason, reservoir dogs was almost completely ripped off from a great movie (city on fire starring chow yun fat as tim roth’s character) and pulp fiction was a pretentious mess. sorry guys.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
great list. I’ve never understood the reactions to “Apocalypse Now” and “Scarface.” They were ok, but not nearly as good as everyone gives them credit for. But I would have put Titanic at #1. What a horrid movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
The fact that people are saying that The Godfather is overrated is completely ridiculous. That is one of the best films ever created in my honest opinion not to mention my second favorite film. I agree with almost the entire list from the films I have seen. Clerks shouldn’t be on here though. The film’s budget was extremely small and to create a nifty film with such an original style in regards to the camera angles and quirky characters. Good list, One disagreement but other than that I agree. Keep up the movie lists I can’t get enough of them!
August 26th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
What a crappy list.
Just lame opinions based on nothing. I could make a list of tons of overrated movies that people love that are way worse that a lot of these.
Also Star Wars (any episode) should be on every list of overrated movies.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
I liked Clerks and Scarface. Though everything else on the list is a bit over rated. Scarface seemed like you tried to look for the wrong things. It’s not supposed to be intelligent. It was supposed to be a bloody action flick that spouted off monologues and one-liners that people would repeat until the end of time. Now I think there should be an overrated television series list.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Whew! FINALLY made it to the bottom of the comments! lol!
I gotta say Shane Dayton, you’ve bloody well hit the nail on the head with nearly every movie here!
Training Day – Whoa! Waitaminute! Denzel Washington’s a BAD GUY?? But… He’s… Nice… Isn’t he?… Oscar!
Reservoir Dogs – What the hell are they planning? What the hell just happened?? What the hell are they shooting at?? What the hell??
Star Trek IV – Och! Cap’n! I tightened yer girdle as far as she’ll go! I canna tighten her no more!!
The Others – Snore. Oh, they were dead all along… Snore.
Scarface – Tony Montana is a BEEG arsehole with a LEEDLE FREN.
Shakespeare in Love – Ah! Pomp and ceremony and costumes oh my!
Chicago – Holy crap! Richard Gere CAN SING?? And he didn’t even mention Tibet!
Titanic – Snore. Gargle gargle. Snore.
Clerks – I disagree there Shane!
Apocolypse Now – The horror! The horror! ADD MORE BULLETS!
So, a big pat on the back for basically voicing what I too thought about these movies but was too scared to say! …Except for Clerks!…
August 26th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
astraya #310, not sure what you’re referring to but I’m eagerly awaiting it.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
This is sadly one of the few lists on listverse i completely disagree with. Clerks is awesome and Titanic while yes the love story is cliche was a technological masterpiece.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Sweeney Todd should have been on this list. Since so many people liked the Tim Burton version, and it was terrible. If you ask for my reasons, I can go into great detail as to why it is a terrible movie.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Chicago is the worst film ever, with no decent dialogue, a sappy, shallow plot, plus Richard Gere singing. It was a horrific experience, I personally thought Moulin Rouge was better produced at least it had better production designs.
I have no idea why it is so significant, plus Rene Zellweger is another overated actor. There are thousands of more beautiful and talented actresses in Hollywood, why give her the thumbsup? Sometimes I think in order to get attention, women have to make themselves look ugly,eg Bridget Jones,
Monster.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Shakespeare in Love is one of my favorite movies. I think it has a witty dialogue and the script reflected Shakespeare’s work beautifully. Gwyneth Paltrow was definetely overated but without her dad she wouldn’t even in the business.
Even though Saving Private Ryan had a more serious theme, Platoon had already won an oscar, so it is better to have a fresher theme. Whether or not films receive wide acclaim, they are fundamentally a source of entertainment, if they bring us joy then that’s the only thing that matters.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Why, why did someone mention Daniel Day Lewis? Now I feel the (almost) uncontrollable urge to talk about how much I love him for 20, 30 lines of text
I do understand what you are saying, but at the same time… My post was not arguing that Titanic doesn’t deserve the backlash. I have never see the other Titanic movies, they may well be much better. My post was arguing that a) it wasn’t as bad as the foul rep it gets now (mostly due to blacklash). I thought it was a perfectly fine movie. Would I put it in my top 50? no. But I wouldn’t put it down near, say, the awful parody movies that come out now like “Superhero Movie.” and b) it is SO very hated now. Therefore, to me, it means that it can’t be overrated. No movie that is hated that much should be criticized yet again for being overrated. Was it overrated years ago when it came out? Yes. But today, surely we could replace it with something else. It isn’t currently revered as much as most of the other films on this list. I just ask for some perspective.
Juggz – Interesting perspective on Titanic. (#350)
Segue – Big smile to you for disagreeing so very politely! I love it
August 26th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
I liked ST-IV and Shakespeare in Love, thought #1 and #2 were dead on. Some others:
=Bridge to Terabithia: Not bad on its own but fraudulently misrepresented in the trailers.
=Three Kings: The Apocalypse Now of the Gulf War. In all the wrong ways.
=The Terminal: After wanting the stranded passenger out of his hair for nine months, the airport security director tries to block him when he leaves. Huh???
=Cold Mountain: A completely unnecessary tragic ending is followed by an equally unnecessary saccharine coda. Does this film know what it’s trying to accomplish?
=Dark Knight: If I see one more movie where the cops let a maniac go rather than risk an easy shot, I will barf. And Harvey Dent’s complete 180 is just not believable.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Nelia, thank you.
Quite off topic…well, slightly off topic…Al Pacino. Fine actor. I had always gone to see movies pretty much on the strength of his being one of the stars.
Then one night I was taking my oldest daughter out to dinner. it was a special celebration, so I splurged and took her to one of the best restaurants in Beverly Hills.
In the booth next to us is Al Pacino and two friends. For the next *TWO HOURS* Pacino described a long, pointless, boring dream of his in such a loud voice that no one else anywhere near him could conduct a conversation.
It was unbelievably rude, and he was totally unaware of his behavior.
After that, I sort of went off Al Pacino movies.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Oh man!!! This is singularly the best list ever. I never expected you to put down Apocalypse Now as the most over rated ever, but i completely agree with you. Not many people see the movie for what it is:- a mind numbing bore-a-thon. You should have probably also included Pan’s Labrynith, Goodfellas in the list too, but hey, thats just me.
Great List
August 26th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I actually liked everything about The Others *except* the twist ending. It was all working well for me and then those last 15 minutes were like the epilogue for Harry Potter – agony.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Ah yes, Dark Knight. Probably the most overrated film I’ve ever seen or even heard of. OMG that blew so hard.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Hey what about the Dark Knight- i get it that it’s a great movie, and Heath Ledger (RIP) gave a BRILLIANT performance, but outside of the Joker the movie’s just another summer blockbuster.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
I have always wanted to see Apocalypse Now, but now I can’t make up my mind.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Whoever, says Al pacino is an overrated actor, has overrated his opinion. What do you call a fine artist, when he can create tension, atmosphere by just looking at him. Its called presence.
Also, “The Others” is not overrated at all. Comparing to most recent horror movies out there. It is by far overrated. The Slow paced you call it, is called building tension before the final twist is revealed. And it successfully achieved that.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
geeks (289) Bye! Good night and good luck.
knight_forked (290) I love Amer Hist X. One of a few that I own. My “library” is less then 50.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
I agree and disagree with this list, and I never see a movie based on someone’s opinion.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
geeks (289) Bye! Good night and good luck.
knight_forked (290) I love Amer Hist X. One of a few that I own. My “library” is less then 50. Russell Crowe sux. I won’t watch his movies. I have never seen a Tom Cruise movie. He turns my stomach. Keano who?
August 26th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
eschueter (291) Unforgiven reminded me of a really poor “Shane.” I love clint eastwood, but I was disappointed in this movie.I too was surprised it recieved so many awarda and accolades.
August 26th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
I love Scarface…whether it is overrated or not, Al Pacino is amazing. I am glad someone agrees with me on Clerks…it was just not that great. My choice for overrated movie would probably have to be Chocolat; I love Johnny Depp too, but that movie was not as great as everyone made it out to be.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Apocalypse Now??/????? Are you kidding me? One of the finest films ever made.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
This is my first post on this website so here it goes…
10. Agree, but the statement “this was the one that Denzel Washington finally won an Oscar for” is flawed seeing how he already won an oscar in 1990 for the movie Glory (supporting actor though). So he had an oscar a good 11 years before this movie even came out.
9. Agree. I was not expecting RD on the list seeing how many love it. I used to like this movie but upon a recent viewing i found it very boring (especially the flashbacks). However i thought the dialogue was very good.
8. Never seen it
7. Never seen it
6. Agree. I have never liked this movie. To me scarface is the generic gangster movie. its fairly boring and i found it to be depressing.
5. Never seen it.
4. Agree to an extent. the pianist should have won for sure. but don’t always measure things in terms of oscars. they often make mistakes (especially with number 3). Aside from the oscars, imdb gave it a rating of 7.3, which i think is legit for this movie.
3. Agree. This movie was junk. It did not deserve 11 oscars and the 7.2 on imdb is way too high.
2. Disagree. I can see why someone wouldn’t like this film though. I thought the dialogue was fantastic, smith is the one of the best writers out there, even though his movies are filled with lowbrow humor.
I thought this list was very good…until i saw your number one.
1. Disagree completely. This is easily one of the best movies ever made. Everything was great about this movie. The acting, the story… how is this movie boring at all? what else… the cinematography was fantastic. This is quite possibly the best Coppola movie ever made, and he made the godfathers and the conversation.
To me one of the most overrated movies is “Blow”, i absolutely hated it and all my friends love it.
August 26th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Titanic is pretty much the greatest movie of all time.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
You forgot the Dark Knight.
& I LOVED Clerks!
August 26th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
“crash”? it was like an episode of “touched by an angel”.
August 26th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
It still surprises me how a movie like “Shakespeare in Love” beat “Saving Private Ryan” or “American History X” in oscar? Another highly rated movie is “The Departed” just a copy of “Mou gaan dou”
August 26th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
bucslim: Sorry, it was DiscHuker who made the original comment to me. No wonder you’re confused.
DiscHuker: “astraya: i had to jump down immediately and respond to your comment at #24. you loathe pulp fiction?!?!? for what reason? you don’t like a good story? maybe great dialogue isn’t your cup o tea? do you hate superb acting?”
A good story? People talking about things I’m not remotely interested in at great length, then shooting other people, then talking about it at great length. 0 out of 10.
Great dialogue? People don’t ever, really talk like that. A scriptwriter with his head up his own backside trying to show other people with their heads up their own backside how clever he is. 0 out 10.
Superb acting? I have to grant that, but it doesn’t overcome the previous two or the next three points. 8.5 out of 10.
Non-linear story-telling? Not per se a problem, but for god’s sake give some sort of clue where the episodes fit it, and how they all tie together. An entire episode that could have been left out completely (ie the Bruce Willis story). 2 out of 10 for trying something different.
Almost complete lack of any sort of sympathetic or identify-with-able characters that I would actually want to spend any time with? 1 out of 10 for Uma.
Great soundtrack? Not my style, but great if it is. 8.5 out of 10.
Did I mention that I loathed this film? Yes. Is this probably my problem, rather the film’s? Yes. Do I stress that if you like it, that’s entirely up to you? Yes.
(Very quickly runs for cover.)
August 27th, 2008 at 12:05 am
You must be out of your MIND Most of these movies are classics! keep your opinion to yourself! Lists should reflect what most people think what one individual think…
August 27th, 2008 at 12:08 am
No Country For Old Men!!!!!!
August 27th, 2008 at 12:09 am
neither American history x nor dark night is bad.
end of.
August 27th, 2008 at 12:38 am
Clerks is anything but overrated. It helped me survive working at a small redneck town’s video store.
Plus, Clerks II is even better.
August 27th, 2008 at 12:44 am
No mention of Babel. It was a boring attempt to make a movie like Crash (which was brilliantly made).
n Al Pacino is a brilliant actor
August 27th, 2008 at 12:54 am
i think the one you missed out on was “The Departed”
I have never seen such a peice of crap that was so highly acclaimed. It was just a bunch of famous people talking in Boston accents. The plot was a boring straight forward tale much like one told by an old man who is talking just for the attention.
the fact that Martin got his Oscar for this compared to the brilliant movies he had made previously (Casino anyone?) makes me convinced that the academy, has their heads up their ass-scars.
And because we are total idiots make a rat run across the screen at the end.
BTW what happened to the yellow envelope?
August 27th, 2008 at 12:58 am
Cloverfield!!!!!
August 27th, 2008 at 1:23 am
Lost in Translation guys.
The most overrated movie of all times.
Boring, slow and boring and slow…oh did i mention boring and slow?:)
August 27th, 2008 at 1:26 am
I actually agreed with the majority of these. While I had little faith that the IMDb top 250 would ever be an accurate reflection of people’s film tastes, the placing of The Dark Knight is ridiculous. I guess a lot of people were willing to forgive all of its flaws just so they could say the “last” Heath Ledger movie was perfect. He was astounding in his role, sure, but for me that’s not enough for the film to qualify as one of the best ever.
I also agree The Departed and Babel were terribly overhyped.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:39 am
Have we mentioned Saving Private Ryan?
August 27th, 2008 at 2:01 am
ok whoever wrote this obviously reads books and thinks that books are the only way to get a story right, these movies are classics which stand the test of time because they are good, if they sucked they would vanish to the bargain bins.
August 27th, 2008 at 2:01 am
the most overrated movie of all time is CRASH. the movie won an oscar for best picture. if you actually think this movie was good you’re an idiot. if you think this movie depicted racism objectively, you’re probably racist.
August 27th, 2008 at 2:09 am
How was Crash racist?
August 27th, 2008 at 2:33 am
What is the rating system? and what makes a film badly over rated? Popular opinion? Critical success? Clerks maybe considered a “cult classic” so is rated highly by some but there rating could be considered “badly over” by the majority of viewers….oh bollocks need sleep
August 27th, 2008 at 4:26 am
how about team america? i didn’t think that was as great as everyone says it was. or anchorman. i never saw a more unfunny movie than that. that and dragon wars. everyone i know was talking about how that was just gong to be the greatest movie of all time. they were all just as disappointed as i was…
August 27th, 2008 at 5:33 am
astraya – no problem, confusion is my normal state. I disagree with just about everything you said about PF, but my beef isn’t with you here, it’s with the author of this list.
August 27th, 2008 at 6:13 am
astraya: do you have to want to hang out with a character to enjoy the story about them? this seems like a terrible characteristic to judge a movie.
the reason the story and the dialogue were so great is BECAUSE they are not typical things that normal people deal with. what would you and i talk about as we are on the way to kill people? probably not much because our stomachs would be in our throats.
if you leave out the bruce willis story line, you miss the captain koons monologue (i think christopher walken’s best scene ever) and the entire happenings with butch, marsallus, zed and the gimp.
did i mention that i love this movie? talking about it this way is like saying my dog is a jerk or that college football isn’t great or that chipotle isn’t wonderful.
(trying to lob these before you get to cover)
August 27th, 2008 at 6:39 am
opie and anthony are doing this list on xm radio right now
August 27th, 2008 at 6:47 am
lol they said your a douchebag shayne
August 27th, 2008 at 6:49 am
Good list. I’ve been waiting 20 years for someone to say that “Scarface” blew chowder.
“CHAY ALO TU MY LEO FREN!!!”
(Say hello to my little friend)
And they didn’t give it best screenplay?… shocker shocker.
As Bill Murray said in “Scrooged”……Oh my gosh, did that ever suck?!?
August 27th, 2008 at 7:11 am
I completely agree with Chicago. Ugh. It’s like a grown-up High School Musical.
August 27th, 2008 at 7:37 am
Scarface is the only movie I haven’t seen of this bunch, which must say something about my desire to see it.
I wager with all the language and violence, the cult film Boondock Saints, which I’ve seen and enjoyed, is comparable in taste to Scarface and could fit into this list somewhere.
Shakespeare in Love was fine, but appeared to be a fairly ordinary romantic comedy with a period twist. (How any film with Ben Affleck can garner best picture is what stumps me.)
I went to see Titanic in it’s waning months at the box office, but the theater was still packed. That was in Wisconsin, so there was preening response, largely feminine, when Jack mentions his home town.
Clerks comes down to representation of a zeitgeist. Films that express the attitude and emotion of a generation or significant demographic, especially a youthful one, tend to gain a following. This movie was about the people that enjoy watching it, distended through black comedy. The bits of reality treated have changed little enough since its release that certain viewers will still relate and praise its worth.
Apocalypse Now is all about the Doors song “The End.”
August 27th, 2008 at 7:44 am
Am I glad to see Scarface here!
And Titanic! And all other movies! By God, I don’t understand what people think is so special about them.
Bring me Patton!
August 27th, 2008 at 7:45 am
I agree with all of these except “The Others” I loved it and loved the twist.
August 27th, 2008 at 7:49 am
Training Day is one that I will have to disagree with. Granted the plot wasn’t as original as it could have been but the overall plot had a few tweaks that made it original. Was it a good enough performance for an oscar? No.
Scarface is way overrated. Although it is a decent film, all the wannabe gangstas that sport the T-shirts, hats, pictures, etc. makes me sick! If you want to look up to a real drug dealer, Pablo Escobar is your man.
Another great movie but is way overrated is Clerks. Kevin Smith is an intelligent guy but doesn’t show show it when he writes his films. A little less cursing and a little more plot twists and he could really make a name for himself.
August 27th, 2008 at 7:52 am
@astraya Pulp Fiction was great because of the Bruce Willis character – but I love almost everything Bruce Willis does. He has one of the best lines in the movie: “I had to crash that Honda, baby” classic!
August 27th, 2008 at 8:06 am
I suppose the main reason for Reservoir Dogs being overrated was because the way the story was told was almost a novelty…good list, too.
August 27th, 2008 at 8:28 am
I think there should have been at least one comedy on here (Clerks doesn’t count; it’s an Indie, not a comedy.) My votes would have been for either Napolean Dynamite or Anchorman. Napolean Dynamite was different, yes . . . but different does not equal good. And Anchorman was original until Will Ferrell’s next half dozen movies came out. Also, both have been quoted so much, it is past the point of “Ad naseum.”
August 27th, 2008 at 8:29 am
Interesting how the American Film Industry’s top 100 Movies of 100 years list plays into this one…once, maybe twice? I would go with that list and pick those on there that you disagree with. AFI are film critics, you know, those who RATE and OVERRATE movies. I’ve been watching movies from that list since I was about 17, trying to get through them all. There are three off of that list I believe are overrated: Lawrence of Arabia (sorry, Jamie, I know you like that movie), On the Waterfront, and Birth of a Nation. All very boring. Overrated by whom? The pub you frequent?
38. Jody K- Glad someone else agrees with me about Akira. Bleh.
August 27th, 2008 at 8:51 am
402. woooooolhouse
I think there should have been at least one comedy on here (Clerks doesn’t count; it’s an Indie, not a comedy.)
****
Do you even know what “indie” stands for?
Obviously not, because you immediately say that Clerks doesn’t count as a comedy, because it’s an indie!
Indie, or Indy, just means Independently Produced Film, one not produced by one of the major studios, like Paramount or Sony. So an Indie can be a comedy, a drama, a documentary, whatever…it’s just made on a (much) lower budget, and on a tighter schedule.
August 27th, 2008 at 8:55 am
I love frustrated film critics who are actually frustrated writers. I think this list is awesome. I may not agree with it, but that’s the beauty of art. I love films, but i’d say 99% are probably overrated. Heck, i think MY favorite films are overrated!
August 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Jamie, it appears we are now well primed for a new list on this site: List Universe’s Top 10 Most Overrated Lists List
…’nuff said…
August 27th, 2008 at 11:10 am
I would argue that everything on the list is more or less accurate (despite being extremely opinionated) except for Training Day. Training Day was a brilliant movie with an interesting plot, GREAT character development, good acting/dialog etc. It may not be a movie for the feint of heart, but it is an applaudable movie nonetheless.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:53 am
YOU’RE OVERRATED!
August 27th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
ok titanic should be number 1!!! and the others shouldn’t even be there at all!!! tut tut….
August 27th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
jamie is an ass, with nothing redeeming to say about cinema.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
rolltide: “Zed’s dead, baby, Zed’s dead.”
lol
August 27th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
astriya: Jamie didn’t write this list, it was submitted by Shane Dayton. Should read before thou speaks. I would suggest you visit the archives; Jamie does in fact have many redeeming things to say about cinema.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
chicago, star trek, and shakespeare in love are the only movoes th should be on this list. but that’s just my opinion.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
make a list with the top ten overrated lists and put this at number 1.
August 27th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
apocalypse is a better movie than full metal jacket
August 27th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
oops… I think I made that too long…my bad
August 27th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
The winner: is Cambrex101 (comment 167) – congratulations! Please email me your choice of prize and name and address. jamie at frater dot com is my addy.
August 27th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
ok im not gonna lie. I liked titanic and resorvoir dogs. Everything else is agreed
August 27th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
DiscHuker: Could you explain what chipotle is? I’ve never heard of that.
(I have just noticed an “astriya” a couple of comments ago. S/he is not me, and vice versa. I have the highest regard for Jamie and his opinions even about movies. Even if I didn’t, I wouldn’t say so, wouldn’t begin a sentence with a lower-case letter (unless referring to a username (Jamie is his actual name) and wouldn’t use the word “ass” in that way.)
(Jamie, if you moved the contributor’s name to just below the introduction, it might reduce confusion about who wrote the list. When I’m reading a list, I often think “Is this Jamie or is it someone else?” (I couldn’t quite imagine you having special knowledge about running from the cops, for example.)
August 27th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
that’s a good idea astraya. and chipotle is a jalapeno chili pepper
August 27th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
What about “The Passion of the Christ”? “American Beauty”, “Pay it Forward”, and pretty much anything else with Kevin Spacey sucks. “The Matrix” and all “Pirates of the Caribbean”. And wickeddavis, if you didn’t think Team America was funny, you are a humorless numbnuts.
August 27th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Apocalypse Now has to be one of the best movies I’ve ever seen; you’re just plain wrong. As for doing Heart of Darkness justice, the setting may be radically different, but it’s as good as a movie based on it could be.
August 27th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
astraya, (419),
It seems I’m not the only one with copycat problems. I seem to have had at least three similar others in the wake from time to time. When I complained, the answer was that nothing could be done: it might be necessary to think about changing the LV identity (whioh I’ve already done once, reluctantly, of course). I thought about it, but decided to slog on. You and I have both built up e-friendships here built on the developed base of those epithets. I also found trying to advise that Spanner and Anon were one and the same wasn’t all plain sailing. Why should we have to make life difficult for ourselves and our LV friends through no fault of our own?

419. astraya, there was no possible way that anyone who has been reading your posts for more than a week could possibly have been misled by the 410. astriya.
410. astriya has no clue as to proper use of grammar and capitalization. I’d bet that spelling is woefully wobbly as well, but the sentence (if we want to be so kind as to call it that), is too short for spelling to become an issue.
Just know, astraya, that the majority of LVer’s know you, and can’t be fooled by a shoddy lookalike.

In regard to Chicago;
obviously musicals do not appeal to everyone, but from an artistic perspective I think it was brilliantly done.
August 27th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Thank you! What a well-thought-out list. I’d put Scarface number one and Apocalypse Now second. I’ve been preaching the former’s flaws and cheesiness forever, but the latter I’ve never really spoke out against. It’s so true, though. In AN, you wait and wait and wait for something great to happen–then it ends.
August 27th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Chicago was a brilliantly done musical adaptation to a film, unlike Sweeney Todd. I would hesitate to mention Mamma Mia, since it is exactly what you would expect it to be: a musical made of ABBA songs.

I’m in a rather bright mood, having just watched the DNC, where Barak Obama was given the nomination by unanimous acclimation. Of course, 90% of the LVers have little to no interest in American politics, but this seems to be a step in the right direction for my nation; the first in 8 years.

Ugh. Titanic. I am a twenty year old woman and I still have not found the four hours (or however long it is. I know it’s long.) to sit down and watch it. My mom wouldn’t let me watch it when it came out because of the sex (I will have to thank her), and I have no interest whatsoever in seeing it. I’m sure it’s overrated. And I also hated Scarface. I did, however, enjoy the video game. Muuuch more entertaining. Haha
August 27th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
I wish I had as much interest in American politics as I do in that of Armenia (to chose somewhere at random, or anywhere else comparable), but as a citizen of the world, I am affected by American politics whether I like it or not.
There is a (possibly apocryphal) saying: When the elephants [and the donkeys, too] fight, the grass suffers. When the elephants [and the donkeys, too] make love, the grass suffers.

Anon: It must have been gratifying logging on as Anon and reading all the nice things that people had been saying about Spanner. Kinda like overhearing your own funeral. Having played or sung for more funerals than I care to think about, I often think that people should have their funerals before they die rather than after. I would love to hear all those nice things that people say about other people at their funerals. (Provided they are nice things, mind.)

This list sucks, sans Titanic and Chicago. Clerks?? Apocalypse Now?? You’re retarded.
August 28th, 2008 at 7:30 am
Astraya(438), I think they’re ‘donkephants’, and they almost always kill the grass…
Chris(424), I had no idea my face was overrated – hell, I never even knew anyone rated it… can I get it insured?

Pulp Fiction should be #1. One of the worst movies ever!
August 28th, 2008 at 7:35 am
Ah! Just thought of a better one: Jackaderms!
August 28th, 2008 at 7:50 am
I fell asleep watching Apocalypse Now, not once, but 3 times. It took me 3 consecutive nights to finish that film. It might have been a good film, but they dragged it out far too long. I absolutely agree it was overrated.
I’m honestly surprised that Monster wasn’t on the list. I like Charlize Theron, I even liked the movie, but it was definately not worth the Oscar Charlize won. Though, everyone knew she would. ‘hot chick makes herself ugly for movie – omg oscar’
August 28th, 2008 at 8:09 am
The 3 Star Wars “pre-quels” Phantom Menace, Clones & Sith, considering how many zillions they made at the box office, are overrated…
August 28th, 2008 at 8:28 am
what is with this list
Reservoir Dogs?
Scarface
Clerks
Apocalypse Now
i mean those are great movies there all very good in their own way
this list is one of the worst on the site

astraya,
Indeed. “Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated”, Spanner-youall Langhorne Clamens aka Mark Twain. Which I’m sure has been LVed or posted before, probably more than once. However, although the intention wasn’t there, I felt a bit mean. Rather like one of those coy, self-deprecatory remarks that’s designed to draw compliments from people! (Isn’t that what death is, what it does? Don’t speak ill of the!)
It’s often occurred to me how nice it would be to run aspects of one’s entire life backwards. Imagine starting off with all the knowledge and experience you’ve managed to accumulate by the end. What possibilities life would hold. Or having all the retirement time on your hands when young and vigorous to make the most of it. I recall someone did a clever take on the “ages of man” thing: one of those that gets passed around the internet. It formed a perfect arch, starting off with the bald, helpless, gabbling, incontinent infant and ending with the bald, helpless, gabbling, incontinent gaffer. We fell about.

this list is absolutely terrible. I knew it was going to be bad as soon as I saw resivoir dogs on it. maybe you should’ve titled this “top ten movies i didn’t care for”. clealy a matter of taste to me. Segue, All I meant is- were one to go into a Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, etc.- where they have a Comedy section AND an Independent section, Clerks would most likely be in the Independent section. I thought there should be at least one Hollywood-produced comedy in there. Personally, I find Clerks hilarious, and am owner of not only both movies but the (much-too) short-lived animated series from ABC (which, if there were ever going to be a Top 10 Underrated Sitcoms, that should be on there.) But re-looking at what I wrote, I did specifically say that it was an Indie, not a comedy, which was a poorly-written mistype, and I thank you for pointing that out. To everyone. And making me look stupid. Just like my mom always does. Sigh.

No!!! Loved Scarface! Loved Titanic! I know it’s apparantly not allowed to love Titanic, but I did. Cried my eyes out.
LOVED Pacino in Scarface. love him in pretty much all his films. He’s still a hottie and he still convinces me more than all the modern actionstars.
Did hate Shakespear in love and Chigaco though. Way too long, and to borring.
August 28th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Reservoir Dogs isn’t the overrated one, it is Pulp Fiction that is even though it is still fantastic.
Other notable films for the list: Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, No Country For Old Men, and Psycho (1960)
August 28th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Bashing someone over what movies they like or dislike is very immature and ignorant.
Suggesting that someone would eat crap because they don’t like your favorite dish shows a severe lack of tolerance and/or sound judgement.
I have found that my opinion of a movie is greatly influenced by my expectations prior to seeing it. I am much more critical when I hear how great a movie is.
That being said, here are five movies I feel are very underrated:
Gangs of New York (Daniel Day Lewis at his finest)
The Aviator
The Last Samurai (never though T.C. could pull this one off, but he did)
City of God (although not as much underrated as unknown – a must see)
And for the lowbrow enthusiasts: Grandma’s Boy (it helps if you work or know someone who works in the Video Game industry, but pretty hilarious nonetheless)
Just for the record I have 500+ DVDs, from just about all genres, so I have had plenty of exposure to films both good and bad. Remember, the subject of this list was not movies that are BAD, but rather overrated. (ex: Fargo isn’t a BAD movie, it just isn’t as good as people like to say it is, ya; Unforgiven and There will be blood were both boring as hell, but the endings of both films were incredible – and the only parts worth repeating; a couple of the others listed in my post were just ok, a couple were pure crap.) I firmly stand by my original comment, and add that all of the Dirty Harry movies are pretty overrated as well.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Natural Born Killers
This was not a “bad” movie in my opinion. But, in keeping with the theme of this list, I did feel it was horribly “overrated”. When this movie came out, the hype was huge. And I was absolutely in the right demographic to love it. Right age, right gender, right tolerance to on-screen violence. And I loved the sound track, much of which I had heard pre-viewing. But after I saw the movie, despite all the magazine covers and controversy and talk about whether violence in society is a cause vs a reflection of violence in the movies, etc. etc. etc…….I came out of it with the feeling that it was kind of lazy; That they used violence in the place of entertainment. Which in my mind, made it overhyped, and overrated.
Then again, maybe I just didn’t enjoy a movie that many, many people did.
August 29th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Blair bloody witch project !!!!!!,only movie i have ever walked out on,10 – 15 mins got to the part with the loud mouthed yankee bird stumbling round repeating oh my god,oh my god, bloody near threw my bundy rum i had smuggled in,at the screen !!! decided i wouldn’t waste such good alcohol on such a crap movie!
August 29th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
For those who have mentioned The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield: I would not say that these movies are overrated, but rather that they were hyped up to the extreme. These movies were not very good anyway.
August 30th, 2008 at 3:48 am
I was more or less fine with the list until I hit Number One, and in one fell swoop you flush whatever credibility you have left as a cinema critic down the the proverbial crapper. Anyone who considers Coppola’s APOCALYPSE NOW overrated either simply didn’t understand it or has ADD and lacks the patience for a story told this methodical and slow-burning.
I also see that most of the commenters here who agree with it at No. 1 HAVEN’T read ‘Heart of Darkness’. Doesn’t surprise me. I doubt these people would have the patience to read books as well.

Your description of Titanics’ popularity was a little sexist! I know a lot of guys who like that film, and i loathed it.
As for Shakepeare in Love – I watched that in a state of disbeleif of how bad it was. Eugh.
I though chicago getting the Oscar was a good thing – its well made and well acted, and visually brilliant. It was an unconventional choice, but I havn’t seen the Pianist, I have friends who absolutley loved it.

I watched Anchorman after everyone telling me how funny it was, and I laughed TWICE, both at steve carrells character when he talks to the camera.
But the thing about comedies is, there are faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar many more differnet views on what people find funny, than opinions on quality
August 30th, 2008 at 9:33 am
I have to say the most ovverrated film is obviously Citizen Kane! This film has a hundred percent on rotten tomatoes. No film should have a hundred percent. I dont care what anyone says. If its a hundred percent that tells people no one dislikes it (atleast critics). It could still be the best movie ever made but that doesnt change the fact its overrated.(By the way I found it boring so I couldnt watch after 45 minutes) I just have a hard time believing that no one diddnt like this movie. This could be the ultimate movie but that wouldnt matter. I have to constantly say that so people dont think I hate the movie and dont apreciate how it was done. Look I like 2001 a space odyssy its my 3rd favorite but many consider it one of the few movies that compete with citizen kane. At this time it has 96 percent. Thats acceptable, for alot of people it would probably be boring. I mean seriously theres at most 45 minutes of talking in the movie. Where im getting at is if Citizen kane got a 98 or 97 I would not have a problem with it. A couple of my friends say its there favorite movie. These friends cant sit through it either. When I tried to watch it they werent even in the room for most of it and it was there 2nd time watching it. I could hardly pay attention. anyways I just hate how people say they love it when they dont even find it entertaining and for alot of people they only say they like it so they don’t look dumb.
Anyways reservoir dogs is actually one of my favorite movies.
My god I dipise Titanic.
I never saw the romeo and Juliet movie but I hated the what would you call it stage script or something for a play. Though I like Julius Ceasar and merchant of Venice.
I despise Titanic the only time I was interested in seeing it was the third time and that was only because I thought it couldn’tbe as bad as I remembered…It was…
I like Training day alot but it is highly overrated.
Also I like Scarface but the only reason its consider a great movie is because people feel they can relate(which they can’t)
And the godfather thats a really good movie but a little overrated.
well this is a long post and my first one so go easy on me if you want to attack my spelling or my ideas please go easy on me. No im kidding tear me apart if you feel like it.
Anyways see ya!

Without wanting to start a debate on post-Kantian philosophy, whether one thinks a movie is overrated or not is entirely individual. But its fun to see some try and argue this is not the case.
I always enjoy Scarface, a movie that still manages to shock 20 years later! “Say Hello to my Little Friend!”
I thought I’d dislike Titanic, but Im glad I watched it with an open mind in the end!
And I must say I never “got” Apocolypse Now. That would be top of my list too!

i’ve seen 6 out of the 10. training day, resivoir dogs, startrek 4, scarface, titanic, and clerks. i liked each one for obviously different reasons. training day was good because i like it when an actor goes out of character. resivoir dogs i liked because it’s a fun movie, startrek i liked because i’m a bit of a trekkie, scarface because of the violence by the masses, titanic because i like movies that are based on real life accurances no matter how inaccurate, clerks because i like the adolescent use of profanity. thing is.. most of these movies ESPECIALLY titanic i only wanna see once or if theres nothing else on tv to watch. they are way to talked about for me to see any reason to watch them again and again

September 10th, 2008 at 9:30 am
Thank you, sir. This list is so true. BTW, The Others should surpass overrated. It was completely obvious and just a bad steal of Night’s Sixth Sense.

Denzel won an Oscar in 1989 for best supporting role in “Glory”.
Thanks dude. I was gonna mention that when I started reading the list but wanted to check to see if anyone beat me to it. I’m surprised it hasn’t been fixed.
I’ve never seen “Training Day” so I can’t comment.
“Reservoir Dogs” is classic Tarantino, and I’m not even that big of a fan. Just look at the cast! This is great gory fun, while his truly most-overrated, “Pulp Fiction” is artsy-fartsy BS.
“Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” is good clean fun, with some very humorous moments. Besides, its not like anyone was screaming “Oscar! Oscar!” anyways.
“The Others” is another I’ve never seen. I guessed the premise of “The Sixth Sense” as soon as Bruce Willis was shot…that one belongs here as well.
“Scarface” I’ve only seen a few bits-and-pieces of. Its almost 3-hour run time didn’t help. I really don’t get into remakes that change the entire background of the originals either.
“Shakespeare in Love”…no thanks, I’m a heterosexual male.
“Chicago”…I did see this…on DVD. Yes, this aforementioned heterosexual male sat through a musical. But hey, Queen Latifah is cool, and Zeta-Jones is hot. Alas, Richard Gere kept sticking his big schoz in there and ruining it. But yeah, defiantly not Best Picture material. I’d give it two stars.
“Titanic”…I’ve been dissing this massive load of shite since it came out. But then again so have a lot of others.
“Clerks” I’ve never seen. I sat through one Kevin Smith movie: “Dogma”. I couldn’t give that DVD away fast enough. Salma Hayek kept my attention, but that was it. I have no interest in any of his films from now on, thus no interest in “Clerks”. I may be a slacker but I’m 44-years-old.
“Apocalypse Now” is a brilliantly-filmed and gorgeous movie. But is is overrated. Even if it did almost cost Francis Ford Coppola (and Martin Sheen) everything. I would, however, recommend the documentary “Hearts Of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse”. It will flip you the f–k out even more than “Apocalypse Now”. How this film ever got made at all is absolutely extraordinary.

4. I love it
3. I love it and I also luv Leo
2. I’m not a Kevin Smith fan
1. Marlon, baby I’m sorry

October 9th, 2008 at 9:02 am
I do agree with some of the flicks you mentioned, but Apocalypse Now? I’ll agree with you that it’s not the most entertaining film out there but I did complete a comparative study of both Apocalypse Now and Heart of Darkness and in my opinion, I do believe that both compliment one another. Each use entirely different methods to convey the same message, but under quite thorough analysis I do deem Apocalypse Now worthy of its literary counterpart. It’s a shame Marlon Brando wasn’t an emaciated half-dead corpse though. I think that ruined the great irony that was Kurtz.

November 24th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
Reservoir Dogs is so unoriginal that Tarantino couldn’t even come up with original character names…
Mr Pink, Mr Red, etc, were all ‘borrowed’ from the Walter Matthau vehicle, The Taking of Pelham, 1,2,3, a 70s NYC hostage flick…(which is unfortunately being remade with Denzel and Travolta)
November 24th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Scarface? Agreed…Pacino as a Cuban? Al at his hammy worst…Titanic a no-brainer…a total disaster of a movie…har har…

I cannot stand Titanic as a movie . I saw it in IMAX and still was not impressed. The Others I thought was one of Nicole Kidman’s better movies . Shows how much I think of her. Watching Al Pacino scream in another film? I think he really has only one real character.
Also I would have to disagree with you on Reservoir Dogs . It will always be one of my favorites.

Platoon (because the first 40 minutes of it)

reading your comments i guess its both. but hey, what can a stupid one do – provoke and provoke. not that you can do anything else good.
December 22nd, 2008 at 1:09 pm
506. holla -
so you have nothing better to do than list hop and make derogatory comments?
why not try constructive criticism or better yet instead going list to list with all that negativity…submit a list of your own for consideration of publication. see how it feels to have people badmouth your list writing efforts or even just your own comments.
December 22nd, 2008 at 8:16 pm
I agree with all of those, except Chicago, which I love and have seen at least 10 times.
December 27th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
the recent TWILIGHT film is so over rated. Plus the novel itself also.
January 6th, 2009 at 6:40 am
Why aren’t there any Will Ferrell films on the list? He is the least funny comedian who has ever lived, Anchorman was NOT FUNNY and i just saw step brothers which was even worse.
January 16th, 2009 at 5:46 am
If you dont like any movie, it doesn;t mean its over rated. The basis is still the plot & acting, IMO.
Twilight is overrated, yes. Because terrible acting. I know a lot are dissapointed, but wont admit it.
January 29th, 2009 at 7:04 am
“Titanic” was a long and boring soap opera without good acting, flat cardboard characters, and the all time cliché of a tragic love story between two star-crossed lovers.”
Maybe you should rephrase that ?
The Sixth Sense – well, all of his movies are incredibly overrated. Unbreakable is Unwatchable, for instance.
All Star Wars movies are overrated except the first one, before they messed with it.
Scarface is great. As is Reservoir Dogs. I basically feel Tarantino did an “Orson Welles” after RD – he started at the top and worked himself down.
January 29th, 2009 at 7:26 am
Just saw Tenebrae’s comment on Monster: ‘hot chick makes herself ugly for movie – omg oscar’
Lol. I thought it was a truly awful movie. She didn’t resemble Wournos at all.
February 4th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
lol i liked clerks, chicago, titanic, and the others…and i havnt seen any of the other ones… but according to my sis..and the rest of her contemp. lit class…the pianist sucked xD
February 10th, 2009 at 4:27 am
For the record, Titanic is a classic because it is also TRUE…..
The other films, I can’t comment on, because (and I hate myslef for this) I have not seen them!
February 10th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
My list would have included
There will be Blood
Godfather
Matrix
The Shining
Donnie Darko
February 13th, 2009 at 12:07 am
>>>>Though I loved Shakespeare in Love, and all of the “in” jokes that only the true Shakespearean fans would get, I have to agree that it was a fire which burned brightly, but not too long.
Reaching for “Brief Candle” are we?
That script was saved and perfected by Tom Stoppard — and breathes Shakespeare through its pores……
February 14th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
thanks for chicago. i totally agree.
now to the ones i disagree with.
sorry.
but al pacino overated? nu-uh.
and on titanic’s behalf ( here goes all my credibility as a poster, huh? ), despite being stupid, cliched etcetera, it was also sweet, romantic etcetera. alot of movie are like it. just becaus it got awards it didn’t deserve doesn’t make it a bad movie. Its one of the best of its cliched, silly and sweet genre.
I would add breakfast at tiffiny’s, there will be blood and disagree with whoever said annie hall.
March 1st, 2009 at 7:36 pm
I can agree with Titantic. Only watched it to see the boat sink. Yet, Clerks was a great movie fueled by the de-evolution of society and Resivior Dogs is a classic. One movie that should be on here is 300.
March 7th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Titantic should have been 1-10, then the rest after that. I really hated this movie…A tragic event in histroy and we couldn’t give it a happy ending…maybe I am a sucker for the happy endings…but this could have been done better. (go figure…my mom thinks this is the best movie ever)
March 10th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
your an idiot.
March 22nd, 2009 at 9:48 am
you wanting titanic to have a happy ending.
( Is is to soon for the dark knight to be on this list? )
March 26th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
If we’re talking overrated it starts and ends with The Dark Knight. In fact The Dark Knight takes all ten spots. It’s a good action film. Too long in my opinion.
Disagree with Apocalypse Now. It’s probably boring to you because you have a problem with the pacing. There’s also a lot of metaphors in the film. You don’t think that visually it has a lot going for it? Out of curiosity what is a well acted movie in your opinion?
The excessive violence in Scarface is a metaphor for the excessiveness of the time period. I agree it’s slightly overrated. The reason why they say the f-word a lot is because they’re drug dealers. They didn’t have time to go to finishing school so they can speak properly when buying and selling cocaine. The movie is done over the top on purpose. The soundtrack is cheesy. You don’t like any of Al Pacino’s earlier work?
The rest I’ll agree with.
March 27th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
watch dog day afternoon, serpico
March 29th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Twilight is a total highly overrated one though i dont think it was out when this list came out oh well
March 31st, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Except for Apocalypse Now and Reservoir Dogs the rest are pretty much no-brainers.My choices are:
1.All of The Star Wars franchise
2.All of The Lord of the Rings franchise
3.The Shawshank Redemption
4.Forrest Gump
5.The Departed
6.Full Metal Jacket
7.The Green Mile
8.American History X
9.Anything with Jim Carrey
10.Anything with Tom Cruise
March 31st, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Otto Fick…why?
My list is everything on here…espically Titanic. Hate that movie! Should have been #1 like I posted above.
Agree with anything with Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey. I will add Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller. I’ll also add American Beauty.
From your list that should be removed………Star Wars, the old ones only. The rest are ok. The new ones are the ones that made the older ones look bad.
March 31st, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Oouchan you ask why,I ask why not.
-A Sane Revolution-
If you make a revolution, make it for fun,
don’t make it in ghastly seriousness,
don’t do it in deadly earnest,
do it for fun.
Don’t do it because you hate people,
do it just to spit in their eye.
Don’t do it for the money,
do it and be damned to the money.
Don’t do it for equality,
do it because we’ve got too much equality
and it would be fun to upset the apple-cart
and see which way the apples would go a-rolling.
Don’t do it for the working classes.
Do it so that we can all of us be little aristocracies on our own
and kick our heels like jolly escaped asses.
Don’t do it, anyhow, for international Labour.
Labour is the one thing a man has had too much of.
Let’s abolish labour, let’s have done with labouring!
Work can be fun, and men can enjoy it; then it’s not labour.
Let’s have it so! Let’s make a revolution for fun!

Apocalypse Now is the best Vietnam film because it isn’t about Vietnam, all of the other Vietnam movies pale in comparison(Platoon,Full Metal Jacket,Casualties of War)because of their limited ideological scope and sentimentality.
The Departed and Full Metal Jacket are the creations of two of the greatest directors of all time.Unfortunately neither were created during their prime. As far as I’m concerned Kubrick’s ended with Barry Lyndon and Scorsese’s ended with Goodfellas.
I wouldn’t call The Dark Knight overrated considering it achieved it’s obvious goals with out any major flaws and Ledgers performance by itself makes it a great film. Along with Unbreakable it is easily the best super hero film.
April 2nd, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Actually I would call The Dark Knight overrated because Ledgers performance didn’t pull that movie out of the hole it was in. All of the other characters sucked ass in this movie. ‘Batman’ was played by a moron who couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag and Gordon was a wimp. The movie only got recognized because of Ledgers death. I know that is harsh to say, but it wouldn’t have been as hyped up if he hadn’t had died. I found the movie to be horrible and a let down.
I did like the one with Jack Nicholson. That gave me that “comic book” feel to it. It was good.
Unbreakable is the best super hero movie that I have seen so far. It is also the best of the movies done by M. Night Shyamalan.
April 2nd, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Otto Fick:
…I agree with everything except Forest Gump. That is an awesome movie.
Also Jim Carrey was really funny in Dumb&Dumber
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:33 am
Oouchan I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy The Dark Knight, maybe watch it again somewhere down the road. I don’t think Ledgers death had much at all to do with the films success. Also I believe Christian Bale is a very good actor(with some issues but who doesn’t) and Gary Oldman is one of my all time favorites.
Also I’d like to add Requiem For A Dream to my list(subtract the anything with Jim Carey because that’s cheating but I still think Cruise is a douchebag). As a recovering dope fiend I have some huge technical issues with that film. People seem like with American History X to think that Requiem is some really heavy movie, and as someone who is also quite familiar with skinhead culture it’s not accurate either. The only good movie about skins is Romper Stomper.
The novel Requiem For A Dream by Hubert Selby is great though and I love Jennifer Connelly to death.
April 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 am
Otto Fick….maybe I will watch it again later, if only to see Ledger again. He was good in that movie but I didn’t enjoy the other actors as much. They ruined it for him and for the movie. It could have been so much better. Bale was only good in Newsies.
Ok…I have to take back one movie with Tom Cruise…that’s Legend. I love that movie! He sucked but the rest of the film didn’t really need him anyway.
April 6th, 2009 at 5:09 am
you forgot the godfather, 2001 space odyssey, and blade runner
April 6th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
The Godfather, 2001 space odyssey, and Blade Runner ? Are you freaking kidding me there buddy?
April 13th, 2009 at 6:22 am
Thank God–I’m not the only one who found most of Clerks unfunny. And Titanic is unbearable.
April 14th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Four words:
Gone With the Wind
April 14th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
I really dont think Titanic is overated. If anything then I think most animated or computer animated movies are overated .
April 17th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
your a fucking retard!! How dare you
April 17th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
What of his is a “fucking retard”? You failed to complete the sentence.
April 19th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
I was on your side right up until Clerks.
May 1st, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Most overrated films-anything by Steven Spielberg.
May 4th, 2009 at 2:49 am
Don’t really like any of these movies
Even though this list has no animation on it, I would have had to put the Nightmare Before Christmas, that movie, although I love it to bits, is was to hyped up.
May 10th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
Pretty decent list, except for Apocalypse Now which is brilliant.
May 15th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Forest Gump was the most over rated movie of all time in my opinion. How on earth did Tom Hanks win an oscar for it when almost everyone can imitate his character. I almost made it through the whole movie.
May 16th, 2009 at 12:53 am
Sharonie, yea, it wasnt the most amazing performance of all time or anything but sometimes the acadamy goes with an iconic charachter over a great performance and to be honest, there wasn’t much competition in the best actor catagory that year, IMO.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
slumdog millionaire is the most overrated movie of all time.
the only reason it won oscars because it was a foreign film. i watched it a few times and everytime it puts me to sleep.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
I would like to add Memento to the list. Special, yes. Super awesome fantastic, no.
June 9th, 2009 at 9:34 am
I would agree, in part, that all of these movies are overrated. While some are outright bad and not worth a second viewing, some are still very entertaining.
Scarface, Titanic and Training Day are still entertaining movies. Maybe they don’t deserve the huge followings they have in terms of quality and being the best movies ever, but they still work as entertainment, and they are far from the worst movies out there. There are other overrated, overbaked movies that could have made this list. The best place to start (and probably end) is with the Oscars. Slumdog Millionaire, for one, is a seriously overrated movie. It’s a movie by Westerners for Westerners about poverty in India. A feel-good movie about the slums and poverty in India? Only outsiders could make that movie. I suggest watching City of God instead, about the favelas (or slums) in Brazil. No happy, Hollywood-type ending there.
June 9th, 2009 at 10:13 am
I must say that I disagree with the whole list actually..
June 13th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
apocalypse now overrated?
you obviously don’t give a shit about cinematography or editing
June 13th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
unacceptable. apoc now is a masterpiece. scarface should be #1 btw.
June 15th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
i was actually very relieved to read this list, i thought i was one of the only people that thought most of these movies stunk up the screen, i’m now liberated to say that sometimes Pacino’s scenes makes me feel embarassed, even when i’m watching a movie alone! some of his recent performances are right up there (or down there) with Nicolas Cage’s, cringe worthy…
June 16th, 2009 at 11:21 am
@hurdy gurdy man (553): I feel the same way and will include Leonardo Dicaprio in that list. He was only good in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”…in playing the fool.
June 16th, 2009 at 11:27 am
oouchan, I must disagree. I hated Leo Dicaprio in his pre-titanic days but he as emerged as a good actor. Gangs of New York, Aviator, Blood Diamond were all good. His best performance in my opinion was in The Departed.
June 16th, 2009 at 11:37 am
@Jay Poe (555): See…that’s where we are going to differ. I can’t stand him as an actor. I don’t get that “believable” feeling from him or from Nicholas Cage. Both, in my opinion, stink as actors. (Although I did like “Con-Air”)
As for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”…I was making fun of him because he was great at playing an idiot.
June 16th, 2009 at 11:44 am
Oouchan, Yeah I go that joke about Gilbert Grape. I’m also a huge Martin Scorsese fan so anything he does I like, which of most of his recent films star Leo. Scorsese is coming out with a new film later this year called Shutter Island. It’s from a book from the author of Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone. It also stars Leo.
I guess you won’t be seeing that though. :0)
June 16th, 2009 at 11:49 am
@Jay Poe (557): Not to say I haven’t seen his movies or won’t see them. I just can’t stand him. Period. He’s just too…wishy washy for me.
I wait for it to come out on cable….free. I won’t spend even the money on rental or waste it coming to me in Netflix….but to each his own.
Just to let you know…my favorite all time actor is Tim Curry.
June 16th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Wow, Tim Curry. Where has he been? His best role was Pennywise in Stephen Kings IT.
Rocky Horrow was just too wierd for me.
June 16th, 2009 at 11:58 am
@Jay Poe (559): I am a RHPS fan! I have seen it over 350 times in the theater. I loved Curry in Legend, Clue and IT.
June 16th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
oouchan, 350 times is a lot. I don’t think I have seen any movie that much. *Legend*. I forgot all about that!! Lord of Darkness. He did do a variety of characters which I like to see in actors/ actresses.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
You forgot The Godfather. :/
June 26th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Have to disagree with you on some points. Scarface, Clerks and reservoir dogs are some of my favorite films ever. i did not see what was so great about scorceses ‘mean streets’ or that ‘Citizen Kane’ that everyone keeps talking about.
June 27th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Apocalypse Now is not and will never be an overrated movie. It is one of the greatest movies of all time, so don’t even SAY a movie with Marlon Brando, Duvall, and Martin Sheen was ” horribly acted”
June 28th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
I haven’t had time to read through all of the 500+ comments, but if no one has said it yet, Deer Hunter. I bought this movie on reputation alone on DVD and couldn’t even watch it all. What absolute drivel. It makes Apocalypse Now look like a fast paced action movie in comparison. I mean, a wedding scene where they spend 20 minutes dancing? WFT is that about? I have no idea how this drivel won 5 Oscars. I can only conlude that there were no other movies made that year…
July 6th, 2009 at 4:02 am
Star Trek IV……overrated???? NO WAY!
July 16th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Hey! There is no such thing as an overrated film. Just a BAD film. But there are a few exceptions to the rule. That’s why sometimes, Listverse is unrealiable.
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:44 am
Shakespeare In Love is the sole reason why I do not respect the Oscars. I couldn’t have been more furious when it won best picture over Saving Private Ryan.
July 24th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Sorry Man but I am going to have to call you out on Titanic and Apocalypse now.
Yes Titanic is not the greatest film ever made and some of Di Caprio’s acting is a bit ropey. However the sinking scenes are truly spectacular, there are some poigniant unexpected scenes and most of all Cameron actually has a real connection and feel for the subject which he gets across. It is fashionable to slate it because so many people like it but they like it because it is not cynical or ironic.
Apocalypse Now- Have you actually watched it. Kilgore’s Air attack on the VC village is one of the most breath taking bits of celluloid ever.
I would add to the overrated list Scent of A Women, The Three Colours trilogy and Platoon
July 25th, 2009 at 4:16 am
how is clerks overated i dont know wanyone who has seen it besides 2 of my friends but i gave them a copy.
edit your list:
1. dark knight( if heath didnt die it would of a good comic book movie and not wat it is)
2. titanic
3. scarface
4. donnie darko (was great film but you know
5. fight club (same as donnie darko)
6. Slumdog Millionaire (it wa ok shoudnt of won all those awards)
7. The Shawshank Redemption ( really no.1 on imdb)
8. Transformers (why do people really love this movie)
9. Pulp Fiction (great movie 4th fav but is overated)
10.LOTR trilogy (come on over 9hrs of walking) was good but no star wars
July 25th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
PeteF your list sucks, Have you even seen Shawshank!!! By all of the objections to Scarface being on this list i believe you completely made your point. They don’t even argue why it shouldn’t be on there they just put a lot of !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:26 am
I love you!!!
August 3rd, 2009 at 3:24 am
WTF, disagree with alot of this..
August 6th, 2009 at 6:51 am
agree with most of it but there is definitely a couple I would have in there. War of the worlds etc. Disagree with Apocolypse Now, great film.
A lot of people saying Godfather should be in ther but you forget that this film was a turning point in this genre, not quite “the original” but certainly cleared the way for a few absolute classics
August 12th, 2009 at 11:02 am
titanic and the others were very overrated i found them cheezy and simply dull, bleeaaargghh
August 20th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
dude, you are so wrong about scarface and titanic! I haven’t seen all those movies but still.. so wrong!
August 26th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
you read my mind, abt all the movies, esp scarface…
August 27th, 2009 at 2:25 am
couldnt agree with you more…. all of these movies are overrated….
posible omissions: anything that involves Will Smith (how does that man sleep at night)
Hancock is the 41st highest grossing movie of all time….
my faith in humanity has been shattered
August 31st, 2009 at 9:26 am
…Apocalypse Now
…Titanic
is overrated and bad acting… WTF?
ya those are overrated only for you only!
I suggest you to watch one more time, LOL.
September 5th, 2009 at 11:06 am
this list is shit
the only overrated film in here is titanic
and seriously where is the dark knight?
September 13th, 2009 at 7:17 am
ilovetitanic its the best movie i have ever seen and i dont give a fYck what people think it WAS the best FYCKEN movie of a ALL times and it won 11 academy awards
September 16th, 2009 at 9:13 am
I Agree, The Dark Knight was recommended to me by many people and all the reviewers licked it’s butt, but I thought it was a piece of crap! That also goes for the bloated Gladiator! What a boring, badly made stinking pile! And people, get over Titanic already! How can it be overrated when more people seem to bash it (mainly just to seem cool, I guess) than admit to liking it! Titanic was a very good movie. I can think of hundreds of movies more deserving of being bashed. Yes, the Deer Hunter comes to mind. Also The English Patient (I agree with Elaine from Seinfeld). Also LOTR and the 3 newer Star Wars movies, which were INFANTILE!
September 23rd, 2009 at 9:26 am
Titanic is a rock solid no.1 on this list.
Disagree with:
Training Day
Reservoir Dogs
Scarface
Apocalypse Now
My adds:
2001: A space odysse (allow me to vomit on this one)
Dark Knight
Lord of the Rings
Schindlers list
City of God
Saving Private Ryan
(based on the imdb 250)
September 23rd, 2009 at 6:53 pm
Thank you for including Scarface and Apocalypse Now. They are both epically overrated.
September 25th, 2009 at 2:19 am
seriously..who the hell makes this lists? please, stick to facts that have a scientific basis..those are really good lisst..but when it comes to your opinions about movies, actors, and entertainment in general, you just plain SUCK..no offense man, but i gotta say it coz no one seems to say it out loud in their posts..Training day was average? denzel will put you on a 23-hour lock down, nigga!!
October 7th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
i disagree with Clerks being on the list. it was a really good film and deserves a lot of praise. it has intelligent humour. however,Clerks 2 was quite a disappointment in my eyes. but i still enjoyed it as i think kevin smith is very clever
October 13th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Here’s my take on some of the most overrated movies in the past few decades….
http://sportschump.net/2009/10/13/five-overrated-movies/1860/comment-page-1/#comment-2784
October 20th, 2009 at 3:44 am
are you kidding me!!! I like most of these movies and if you honestly think pacino is overated, your delusional. You don’t know what the term “overated” mean!
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:36 pm
You really have to stop making list based on the word “overrated”.
October 26th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
making list based on your own opinion??!! ;(
October 29th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Now, I respect your opinion (Unlike some of the ‘kids’ running around here), and to be honest I do agree with the majority of the movies listed, but I must respectfully disagree with the choices of Reservoir Dogs and Apocalypse Now. Specifically Apocalypse Now.
I disagree with Reservoir Dogs because of the cinematography and the overall style of the film. Yeah, it doesn’t even touch Pulp Fiction (My favorite movie of all time, BTW) in cinematography, style, dialogue, or entertainment, but it has earned the recognition it receives.
Onto Apocalypse Now. I probably wouldn’t mind if it was called overrated, but to be listed at #1, called crap, and say it has little to no decent acting doesn’t sit well with my mind. Maybe it wasn’t completely true to the novel, but that doesn’t make it a bad, overrated (at least not as overrated as listed) mess.
On that note, I would like to mention a few films that are overrated, in my humble opinion:
Kill Bill Vol. 1, Gladiator, Wavelength (In terms of Art Films at least), Alexander the Great, Both the Transformer Movies, and Death Proof (By the Pro. Critics).
Other then Alexander the Great (Freaking snore fest, to be honest with you) and Transformers (Oh god the HORROR), I enjoy the movies I listed as overrated (As you enjoyed R. Dogs). That’s all. Remember, this is all based on my personal opinion, so don’t take too much offense to it.
[Q]583
Overrated:
Schindlers list
2001: A space odysse(Some dumb Vomit comment)[/Q]
For Schnindlers List: I respect opinions, but did you even watch the movie?
For 2001: A space odysseY (There’s a Y at the end of it): I can understand why you listed this one Troy, but its a masterpiece. It takes a true appreciator of the film art to understand why its a masterpiece.
November 6th, 2009 at 2:37 am
I can’t believe Empire Strikes Back isn’t on here. This is the best thing they could come up with as a sequel to the excellent A New Hope, or the sequel to it, Return Of The Jedi? It’s repetitive of the 1st, takes the plot almost nowhere (even Luke finding out Darth Vader was his father was kind of pointless as we knew this like half way through the 1st), and the empire doesn’t really strike back until the 3rd.
Titanic is the best movie ever, next to American History X.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:49 am
scarface defines the gangster film and is among the greatest achievements of cinematic art that will ever be.
November 11th, 2009 at 11:38 am
Agree with most. Clerks sucks and Scarface is overrated. I like Pacino though, good actor.
November 13th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Whoever posted this has no taste and is an idiot.
