10 More Bizarre Videos
Published on August 14, 2007 - 55 Comments
So, here we are again - this is our third list of bizarre videos. The first two lists have proven to be so popular that it seemed appropriate to do another. Some of the items on this list have come from suggestions in comments on various posts on this site and discussions on other sites. Thanks to all for the suggestions. So here, completing our trilogy, are 10 more bizarre videos. WARNING: There are scenes of horror in the videos below.
1. Begotten - Elias Merhige
Merhige is an American avant garde film director. This is the full version of his cult film Begotten. It starts to get really weird around 1 minute 50 in. I warn you - this is pretty hideous. The film opens with God killing himself with a straight-razor.
2. Eraserhead - David Lynch
This is a snippet of one of David Lynch’s early films. It was made in 1977 and it is a surrealist horror film which has become a cult classic.
3. Rubber Johnny - Chris Cunningham and Aphex Twin
This has to be the most asked for clip so far. Cunningham is an acclaimed English music video director. This is a short film he made with music by Aphex Twin. He has also directed music videos for Bjork.
4. I’ve Plummed this Whole Neighbourhood - Nurse with Wound
Nurse With Wound or NWW is the main recording vehicle of British musician Steven Stapleton. NWW was originally a band, formed in 1978 by Stapleton, John Fothergill and Heman Pathak. This unusual clip features some very strange sounds accompanied by a bizarre video clip.
5. Holy Mountain (trailer) - Alejandro Jodorowsky
Holy Mountain is a cult film by Chilean Alejandro Jodorowsky. This film was entirely financed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. At a projected budget of $1,500,000 (in USA dollars), it is the most expensive Mexican film production to date.
6. Taiwanese Alien Baby
This is a real human baby suffering from a terrible disorder called harlequin ichthyosis. Sufferers of the disease are known as Harlequin Babies. Awful.
7. Thrift Store - Shaye St. John
Shaye St. John is a mulit-media performance artist. This is one of his performances which is, frankly, weird.
8. Le Reour a la Raison - Man Ray
Man Ray was an American modernist artist who contributed significantly to the Dada and Surrealist movements. He lived mainly in Paris.
9. The Clergyman and the Seashell - Antonin Artaud
This is an early film of the Artaud surrealist play of the same name. Artaud is most famous for his Theatre of Cruelty in which the actors accompanied by sounds attempted to shock the audience. They were successful in most cases causing members of the audience to be sick, or to faint.
Part 2 can be found here, and part 3 here.
10. Variations V - John Cage
Cage was an experimental American composer. In this performance of Variations V we also see Merce Cunningham - he was Cage’s lover and frequent collaborator. The musical score was composed by flipping coins to determine each element and it also involved photo-cells and tape recorders.
This list is three in the trilogy. The first two are the Top 10 Bizarre Videos, and Another 10 Bizarre Videos. As always, if you can suggest more, do so in the comments.

12. josefk - August 15th, 2007 at 2:29 pm

29. Maria Galpin - October 15th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Harlequin Ichthyosis is a very real albeit very rare skin condition which is almost always rapidly terminal. The infant is born with severe contractures and often have necrosis (death of tissue) at the end of toes and fingers. It is a tragic and horrific disease for any infant to endure for their usually short life. They are born in pain and often die in excrutiating pain. For anyone to refer to them as aliens is the final cruelty. However interesting it was to watch it was still upsetting. At least this little innocent could suckle and did not need i.v. feeding which is often the case.
How sad. It was just a tragic situation where the infant was born to people who were not willing or able protect their child from the ignorant public.
30. Harlequin Parent - October 16th, 2007 at 11:39 am
Harlequin Ichthyosis is a genetic condition (not a disease) that is caused when both parents carry the affected gene, and there is a 1 in 4 chance of any pregnancy resulting in a child who is affected.
The issue is that the skin grows at an extrodinary rate and builds up into scale which doesn’t easily shed.
Babys look very severe as they shed very little skin whilst in the womb and this builds up into extremely thick scale, this also can become taut and cause the contorted features that you see in many of these videos.
The condition isn’t normally discovered until birth, 2D scans may pick up that something is wrong late in the pregnancy, 3D scans can potentially pick it up earlier.
Loss of finger tips and toes can occur if the tight skin isn’t released ASAP after birth by a plastic surgeon.
After birth babies are normally treated in a humidified incubator and the skin moisturised with a thick petroleum cream (similar to vaseline), they can also recieve retinoids to help promote the shedding of this thick layer of scale.
Death in most cases is due to infection, but because of improvements in neonatal care more children are surviving to lead relatively normal lives (although requiring intensive skin care regimes)
The fact that this video ends up on the internet highlights how ignorant most people are about harlequin ichthyosis (which is just one type out of over 20).
As a parent of 2 children with this condition, i can honestly say that this video doesn’t beong on here.
31. jfrater - October 16th, 2007 at 11:51 am
Harlequin Parent: thanks for your comment which helps us all to understand the situation better. I will remove the video clip as soon as I find a replacement.
32. Maria Galpin - October 16th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Dear Harlequin parent and Jfrater,
Thank you for your prompt response.
Firstly my writing was only to enlighten some of the more disturbed of your viewers and to express my sadness at the plight of the infant in not only your video but in another that I have seen on the internet.
I refer to this condition as a disease with the true sense of the word from middle english ” lack of ease”. I don’t want to labour the point but according to the dictionary “DISEASE” is any disorder of structure or function of the human, animal or plant that produces specific signs or symptoms and is not a direct result of physical trauma. Regardless of the causative source genetic or acquired through toxic or other exposure…..
I really appreciate the Harlequin parent’s involvement in this discussion, thank you for helping us to understand this as I have only a surface knowledge of the condition and know little of the survival or other statistics.
I admire your strength as a parent and your willingness to inform those of us less wise. Would that more people had your insight.
As to this website it is a well run and fascinating look at some of the stranger and more avant garde artistic endeavours to which I would otherwise not be exposed.
33. Jason - October 20th, 2007 at 2:45 am
That Rubber Johnny was just so . . . fucking weird. I try and use better and more descriptive language, but every time I watch it I end up thinking “What the hell is the message?”
34. jfrater - October 20th, 2007 at 2:53 am
Jason: I totally agree with you
35. Tyree - November 29th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
Harlequin Parent, I’m a bit confused. I’ve been fascinated with strange diseases and disorders for quite a while, and in everything that I’ve read about harlequin ichthyosis, it’s described as excessive shedding of the skin, which causes the sensitive layers to be exposed, hardening and tightening enough to crush the lungs of the afflicted infant. My understanding is that very few of the children who have this disease live past infancy. I might be wrong, but I’m just trying to clarify on this point.

39. TheAlchemyst - December 20th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
Greetings! I have a lot of names, but i go for TheAlchemyst, i live in México, and i love ths website (spetially the weird videos).
I would like to show you this video, appeared on the net not so long ago and its called “Obedece a la Morza” (Obey the walrus), and takes some scenes from the game “Starfox” and from the 90’s movie “The Goddess Bunny”.
This video its pretty weird, as you see it, strange feelings start in the back of your head and go all over your body, whyle the ItzyWitzySpyder song its played backwards.
I dont know why did he made this video, but since it appeared on the net, more then 50 replys said that it contained subliminal messages, and there was even one guy who tought about a “Satanic group of transexuals that opperated worldwide”, this, of course, hadnt been prooved yet, but its amazing how people can react to this kind of things.
link to the video:

40. sdggrant - December 20th, 2007 at 4:15 pm
Oh God, I’ve seen that movie before. It is DEMETED! My girlfriend said she had nightmares about that woman, especially when she has the clown face on her head near the end. Reminds me of the movie House of 1000 Corpses.
41. TheAlchemyst - December 21st, 2007 at 12:45 pm
sdggrant: That’s NOT a woman…. its Johny Baima, a transvestite; the movie he appears on is called “The Goddes Bunny”, a tour on the gay scene of the USA. He/she started his life as an orphan, and passed from fosterhome to fosterhome, receiving a lot of abuses as a kid, then he suffered from Polio, then, the doctors tried to Fix his back with an Iron stick… its not a cute story… but its true…
42. Stereo Mike - December 25th, 2007 at 9:02 am
Has Jan Svankmajer’s name really not been thrown about? Here are two smashing examples of his work:

And despite her impressive, eclectic videography, this video from Björk surprises:

Thrift store guy is a weirdo. Rubber Soul director is one too, truly bizarre.
I just don’t get John Cage. Not bizarre just makes me sleepy.

44. JettaKeiran - January 11th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
All of those were very good choices, but may I as a very small favor? Video number 4 caused me to go into a mild seizure due to the sound pitch, and I think it would be wise to put a slight warning up Just to be safe.
All of them really were greatly bizarre
I hope you can make another one soon!
