Top 10 Human Sideshow Freaks
Published on August 4, 2007 - 105 Comments
These are people who made a living as side-show freaks. Most had physical disorders and had no alternative way of making a living. A list of this type would not be complete without the most famous attraction of all: The Elephant Man. NOTE: Click the images for a larger view.
1. Joseph Merrick - The Elephant Man [Wikipedia]
Born in 1862, Joseph Merrick developed a physical disorder that caused his limbs to grow extremely large when he was five years old. He joined a side-show attraction in 1884 where he was treated well and earnt a large sum of money. A visiting doctor saw him there and made arrangements for him to live a better life. It now believed that Joseph Merrick actually suffered from Proteus Syndrome and not elephantiasis as is commonly thought. Merrick died at the age of 27 from suffocation while he slept.
2. Juan Baptista dos Santos - The Man With Two Penises
Jean (or Juan) Baptista dos Santos is said to have been a “Gipsey”, born in Faro, Portugal around 1843, to normal parents with two other normal children. His career as an exhibitionist seems to have been confined strictly to medical circles; in 1865 turned down a sum of 200,000 francs to appear for two years with a French circus. He possessed two functioning penes and three scrota, the outer two of which each contained a single testis. Dos Santos claimed that the central scrotum had also contained a pair of fully-formed testes, but that these had retreated into his abdomen when he was ten years old.
3. Myrtle Corbin - The Four Legged Lady [Wikipedia]
Josephine Myrtle Corbin was born in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1868. She was born a dipygus, meaning that she had two separate pelvises side by side from the waist down. The extra legs were part of a twin that did not split correctly, like Frank Lentini with his third leg. Each of her smaller inner legs was paired with one of her outer legs. She was said to be able to move her inner legs, but they were too weak for walking. She had four daughters and a son.
4. Mademoiselle Gabrielle - The Half Lady
Born in Basle, Switzerland, in 1884, Gabrielle Fuller first joined the circus at the Paris Exposition in 1900. She travelled with the Ringling Brothers Circus and appeared at Coney Island’s Dreamland sideshow. She was married at least twice, once to a man named John de Fuller. She had a perfectly formed upper body which ended smoothly just below the waist.
5. Mary Ann Bevan - The Ugliest Woman
Mary Ann Webster was born in London, England in 1874, one of eight children. As a young woman she worked as a nurse and in 1903 married a greengrocer named Thomas Bevan. Shortly after getting married, Mary Ann began exhibiting symptoms of acromegaly, a form progressive giantism that causes abnormal growth and distortion of the facial features, as well as headaches, failing eyesight and joint and muscle pain. The Bevans had four children before Thomas’ death in 1914.
6. Martin Laurello - The Human Owl
The man who we have come to know as Martin Laurello was born Martin Emmerling in Nuremburg, Germany around 1886. He began to perform his act in Europe when in his 20’s and brought it over to America in 1921. He appeared several times at Coney Island and worked also for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey’s sideshow. He also worked for Dick Best’s Royal American Shows and as late as 1945 was appearing with Ripley’s shows along with “Popeye Perry” and “Junior Stiles”, 7-year old Lobster Boy.
7. Mme. Clofullia - The Bearded Lady of Geneva [Wikipedia]
Madame Clofullia was born Josephine Boisdechene in Switzerland. She was born hairy and reputedly had a two-inch beard at the age of eight. At the age of fourteen she began to tour Europe, first accompanied by her father and an agent and then with her father alone. In Paris she met painter Fortune Clofullia and eventually married him. She also gained extra fame when she fashioned her beard in the imitation of that of Napoleon III. In return, the ruler gave her a large diamond.
8. Wang - The Human Unicorn
In 1930, a Chinese farmer from Manchukuo was discovered by an expat Russian banker. The Russian was able to take a picture of the man and he sent the snapshot off to Robert Ripley of ‘Believe It Or Not!’ fame. Known only as Wang, or sometimes referred to as Weng, the farmer was normal in every respect except fot the fact that he possessed a fourteen-inch spire-like horn growing from the back of his head. Ripley offered a huge cash reward to anyone who could produce Wang for an appearance in his Odditorium. However Wang disappeared from the public eye in the early 1930’s and was never heard from again.
9. Lionel - The Lion Faced Boy
Stephan Bibrowsky was born in Poland in 1890 to normal parents. He suffered from hypertrichosis, a rare genetic disease that covers the entire bodies of the subjects with a thick coat of fur. Only about 50 cases of the disorder have been documented since the Middle Ages. In the case of Lionel, six-inch-long hair covered his body. He was discovered by a German man named Meyer when he was four years old and became famous throughout Europe where he gained the nickname of Lionel the Lion-Faced Man. Far from being exhibited as a beast, he wore often the best clothes to show that under his hairs he was a literate and enjoyable person that spoke five languages.
10. Ella Harper - The Camel Girl [Wikipedia]
This is the text from Ella Harper’s pitch card. A pitch card was an advertising flyer for attractions at a sideshow.
“I am called the camel girl because my knees turn backward. I can walk best on my hands and feet as you see me in the picture. I have traveled considerbly in the show business for the past four years and now, this is 1886 and I intend to quit the show business and go to school and fit myself for another occupation.”
I have actually seen a living case of this in Verona, Italy. A woman was kneeling on the road begging but her legs were bent in front of her at the knee rather than behind.

3. Kelsi - August 7th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Fascinating…but also creepy! Too bad we don’t have those around anymore. I mean, just because we know the reason behind it doesn’t make it any less interesting to look at.
4. jfrater - August 7th, 2007 at 9:02 pm
kelsi: I agree though in the PC world we live in now I wouldn’t think a sideshow would last long!
5. lxay - August 9th, 2007 at 4:03 am
LAWLS the uhh owl man looks totally photoshopped lol
6. jfrater - August 9th, 2007 at 7:38 am
Ixay: he does - it took me a minute to realise why they called him the Owl Man. Maybe that is why so many people photoshop freaks - to replace their inner urges to see a sideshow
7. Fruckert - August 10th, 2007 at 9:53 am
i think ive seen most of these on ripleys…i know ive seen the unicorn man on it before
8. jfrater - August 10th, 2007 at 10:06 am
Fruckert: I used to watch Ripley’s Believe it or Not as a kid - I had no idea that he actually had a real sideshow in the 30’s. Very interesting.

11. peggo - August 10th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
Thanks for this great post, and not giving credit to sideshow performers, like the bed of nails tattooed people ect,
I am with a group called 999 eyes of endless dreams we are one of the last traveling sideshow what uses only medical anomalies,
We did get our 1st year out people saying this is wrong why put people on display and lots of crap.
I go by the modern day elephant man, I don’t have it as bad as he did. but we suffer from the same thing. I try to educate people about my condition and tell them how i get treated by others,
The other members do different acts we have a lobster boy what is great with magic. Born with only 6 fingers, we have a Lobster Girl 7 fingers, a 1/2 woman a dwarf and a few more, this is our 4 season and i believe it will be a great season on the road. we have people open there doors for us feed us and give us beds to sleep in when we are on tour..
peggo the leggo
12. francesca - August 10th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

14. jfrater - August 10th, 2007 at 8:30 pm
francesca: thanks for the comment. I only have five fingers on each hand so I am not as wonderful as 6+ fingered people, but I try to be wonderful anyway

this movie was banned for years and called taboo.

21. jfrater - August 11th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

22. ryan scott - August 11th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

as far as freakshows at circus some may have a dwarf or a man made freak but there few and far between. I like the people what preforms on stage and dose acts like the bed of nails ect they are interesting people

25. John Waters - August 14th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
How could you fail to include “The Enigma”.
I saw him on U of Penn Campus a few months ago, we walked up from the subway together.
26. jfrater - August 14th, 2007 at 8:49 pm
John: I only included people with natural deformities - not those who have chosen to deform themselves
27. peggo - August 14th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
The Enigma is a really nice person, if your talking about tattooed people there is Larry Thy Leopard. Katzen. Eak the geek, and s many more. i know Larry personally katzen and eak, I meet the enigma at one of our shows in Austin. all of these people chose to be tattooed I was thinking about getting my face tattooed but the freak mommy said no to me LOL. but I am going let Larry or Katzen tattoo my body.
28. Fruckert - August 15th, 2007 at 6:01 am

30. Fruckert - August 16th, 2007 at 6:45 am

31. jfrater - August 16th, 2007 at 7:33 am
Fruckert: thanks - I couldn’t find a link on Wikipedia so I have removed the text.
32. christian - August 17th, 2007 at 12:32 am
Anyone mention Chang and Eng Bunker? They got to be one/two of the most well known. Or are conjoined twins not considered a deformity.
Mike White: I too am a fan of the late Johnny Eck. He was a muscian and I read somewhere that at one time he had an orchestra. Does anyone know if any recordings were ever made?
33. jfrater - August 17th, 2007 at 8:59 am
christian: the reason I left off siamese twins is that they have occurred enough in modern times that people are quite familiar with the idea and don’t really consider them freaks. Some of the early ones definitely were treated as such though.
34. J. Tithonus Pednaud - August 17th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Regarding Jake the Alligator man, Jake is a gaff - a fake constructed along the same lines of The Fiji (FeeJee) Mermaid. However, the alligator man (or woman) was a staple in the sideshows and prodigious exhibits of years past.
Alligator people (sometimes called ‘elephant skinned) generally had a form of Ichthyosis.

36. emptyhandkiller - September 1st, 2007 at 6:31 am
You are all forgetting Adolfus Lingenhoffer, a prize attraction of the early 1800’s. Below his waist, his body was completely backwards. His feet and legs faced the wrong way. He could run, backwards, as fast as anyone at that time, and won many races. He ended sadly, as during a race he ran full speed into a tree and crushed his own skull.
37. jfrater - September 1st, 2007 at 6:54 am
emptyhandkiller - wow - that is amazing! What a shame there were no cameras in his day.
38. bayo - September 1st, 2007 at 8:19 am

I love the camel girl…shes awsome!!!!!!
45. Meeep. - October 8th, 2007 at 11:13 am
for some reason the camel girl freaked me out…not because of the abnormality but just because it reminded me a lot of the exorcist…where the girl ran down the stairs kind of crab walking…
46. jfrater - October 8th, 2007 at 11:23 am
meeep: I really found that scene weird - it was so out of place - I think they should have left it out (it was not included in the original release).
47. JoAnn Eaton - October 24th, 2007 at 1:18 am
I am the daughter of the Alligator Woman. It was the name she used on the Carnival and Circus sideshows. It is a skin disease. And years ago her father put her on the carnival and exposed her! That’s a terrible way to have to make a living being a freak. Believe me my mother hated it. It’s called Icthyosis. She did not come out of the Florida swaps as some think.
But was a woman of great love and kindness.
Thank God they banned freak shows!
48. jfrater - October 24th, 2007 at 1:29 am
JoAnn Eaton: Thank you for that comment - it is good for us to hear about the experiences of people that were part of this movement.
49. alisa - November 1st, 2007 at 5:16 am
What in the world? Most of these actually seem like they are real but Im a bit skeptical on The Half Lady, The Human Unicorn, The Lion Faced Boy, and also The Camel Girl.

53. Sarah - November 10th, 2007 at 6:55 pm
I heard on some show that The Elephant Man is like that because when his mom was pregnate she went to the circus. Apparently some elephant went loose and came near her and scared her REALLY bad. Thats why he is called the Elephant Man. The show was about a museam [[idk how to spell that]] in pensilvania. I think its the “Mueter Museam” but ya they had a lot of these people on that show because thats what there whole museam is about.
54. peggo - November 11th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
The Saturday Night Show in Austin Texas was Great. I hope some of you could of made it to it
Watch us on Tv tonight. it should be awesome
National Geographic visited the 999 Eyes on our west coast
> tour. Here’s what they have to say: In the world of

> audience for it. But can a performer go too far? Is
> the ritual torture of an animal in front of
> thousands of cheering spectators entertainment? What
> about a beauty pageant, where femininity is
> flaunted… by men? Or would pay money to visit a
> living freak show, when the word itself is taboo?
55. jbjr - November 21st, 2007 at 8:58 am
The 4 legged gal is bothersome. Don’t know why. There was a book (on the subject) that was advertized in magazines when I was a younger. Have no idea what it was called.
Someone said we don’thave sideshows because now there is shows on tv like Jerry Springer, etc.

Discrimination forces 999 EYES to cancel AIDS benefit show
“We could not, in good conscience, stay connected to an event that banned individuals from performing simply because of their physical appearance – an insult, you have to admit, to both the performers and the audience, who hasn’t had a chance to see them perform.” JAMES TAYLOR, Shocked and Amazed
“We are not comfortable performing for an event where disabled people are told how to present themselves any more than we would work an event where black people are not welcome to work and are told how to behave” TYLER FIRE, The Lucky Daredevil Thrillshow
Austin, TX. FEBRUARY, 08, 2008. Austin-based freak show, 999 EYES Carnival of the Damned, has cancelled a planned AIDS benefit performance in Minneapolis citing discrimination from event planner Because We Care.
Because We Care buckled under pressure from Pacer, a disabilities advocacy group, which claimed both the name of the troupe and its performances, were insulting to people with disabilities. While the show features self-identified freaks, members insist the performances aren’t insulting and say they have never faced such blatant discrimination.
The 999 EYES Carnival of the Damned is the last authentic human oddities freak show (as seen on National Geographic), and is owned and operated by its members. The four-year-old group practices empowerment through performances of all-ages shows in clubs, bars, theaters and churches across the country. The group’s standard contract requires that all its venues be handicapped accessible, and has insisted venues build ramps prior to performances when necessary.
Because We Care withdrew its contract offer after Pacer threatened to pull funds for the benefit. Following pressure from other performers scheduled for the show, Because We Care offered a cut-rate contract to some members of the troupe, with the stipulation that members who were considered “freaks,” would not perform.
Members of the group view Because We Care’s actions as discriminatory, and have chosen not to subject themselves to such negative treatment.

What about feral children?
I don’t know whether or not they were put into freak shows after they were found, but certainly they would have had potential.
For anyone who doesn’t know, feral children are children who have been lost, orphaned, or abandoned and have been raised by animals like wolves, monkeys, goats, etc. A few cases have been well-documented–see the wikipedia page. Feral children lack the ability to acquire language because they are usually found after the age has passed where they can– there is a very small window of opportunity; I think after four you can learn words but you cannot put them together into sentences. There have been some cases where parents have locked kids in rooms– see the wikipedia page on Genie of Los Angeles.

what about Julia Pastrana?
she was pretty famous in her day. and Tom Thumb–he and his wife (who was also afflicted with a similar form of dwarfism) were very famous in their day as well.

yes, the Julia Pastrana preserved body moving around for years. what a shame for such a beauty..damn, it furrows my brow it does. but she stands defiant in her dress, all in all, and i cant be upset or a pest, for I dont stand near her. furrowed brow again for different reason.

she was an accomplished dancer and singer, too but she was exploited by her husband
and she thought he married her because he loved her. he only married her because he didn’t want her to be stolen by another manager and lose the income he got off her. That was why he embalmed her, so he could continue to exhibit her and her child and keep making money off of her.

Not the right choice for the “World’s Ugliest Woman”. That title has to go to the Mule-Faced Woman, Grace McDaniel: http://www.sideshowworld.com/GMC.html
From what I’ve read, she was a very nice and friendly person, but boy, that first look is a shocker.

Sad side note, many countries banned freak shows in the late 1800s.
To show the freaks how much we care about them we took away their only way of making a living and left them to starve out on the street.
Typical liberal compassion. Destroy the people you want to help and you still feel good about it.

Anyone interested in this subject should find a copy of “We Who Are Not as Others” by Daniel P. Mannix. Mannix actually worked as a sword swallower / fire-eater for sideshows and knew many of the freaks he talks about. You get a whole different perspective on these individuals.
