Top 10 Pink Floyd Songs
Published on May 24, 2008 - 149 Comments
Pink Floyd - one of music’s most successful acts - they have sold over 200 million albums around the world. They are considered to be a British progressive rock band, gaining early recognition for their psychedelic or space rock music. This is a list of their ten greatest songs.
In 1985, Roger Waters left Pink Floyd and declared the band dead. Two years later, David Gilmour and Nick Mason released A Momentary Lapse of Reason and proved him wrong. Although the album is arguably worse than anything else in the Floyd catalog, the songs “Learning to Fly”, “On the Turning Away”, and “Sorrow” stand as some of the best of the post-Waters Floyd. This performance is from the Pink Floyd concert film Delicate Sound of Thunder.
Richard Wright’s mesmerizing keyboard work and Roger Waters’ though-provoking lyrics both shape this great song from the Floyd’s greatest hit, Dark Side of the Moon. The melody was originally born from the Pink Floyd recording sessions for the film Zabriskie Point, but the film’s director rejected it. This performance is from Roger Waters’ Live Earth performance.
Syd Barrett’s music, both with Pink Floyd and as a solo artist, is characterized by entrancing and often surreal lyrics. “The Gnome” from Pink Floyd’s debut album Piper at the Gates of Dawn is no different. “The Gnome” is a Tolkinsian tale about a little man who enjoys drinking wine and sleeping. This is the album version with random footage of the late Syd Barrett.
Atom Heart Mother is a very eclectic album featuring a very avant-garde symphony/rock suite, three songs by Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and David Gilmour respectively, and “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast”. The title track is the second-longest song the Floyd have ever recorded, clocking in at 23 minutes and 44 seconds. This performance is from the Bath Festival in June 1970.
“Fat Old Sun” remains one of David Gilmour’s best songwriting efforts. This performance is from the DVD David Gilmour in Concert.
During the recording of Saucerful of Secrets, Syd Barrett became more and more disconnected from his bandmates and the world in general. Every theory on Syd’s mental breakout has been posited, from LSD to drugs and epilepsy. This song is seen by many as a self-assessment by Barrett. Barrett was dropped from the band soon after, replaced with his friend David Gilmour.
Another of Pink Floyd’s “epics”, “Echoes” pushed the space-rock tendencies of Pink Floyd to their max. The “whale” sound effects would later be recycled into “Is There Anybody Out There?” from The Wall. This performance is from David Gilmour’s live DVD Remember That Night.
Animals, while not as well known as Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, is every bit as good as its brothers. This album introduced the pig, who’d be present at every subsequent PF tour. This version is from Roger Waters’ live DVD In the Flesh Live.
Shine on You Crazy Diamond is the Pink Floyd’s tribute to their fallen leader, Syd Barrett. The nine-part, 26-minute song is perhaps the greatest collaboration of Gilmour, Waters, and Wright. This performance is from the Pink Floyd DVD Pulse.
This short, acoustic, poignant song by Roger Waters and David Gilmour lends its name to the album, which also features “Shine On”, “Welcome to the Machine”, and “Have a Cigar”. This performance is from Live 8, which was a moving time for Floydians everywhere. After 20 years of animosity, Roger Waters and his former bandmates finally shared a stage together.

Led Zeppelin rules!
(Just joking!)
2. mr_evilmonkey - May 24th, 2008 at 6:37 am
Great list. Glad you kind of stayed off The Wall.
3. FelixMG - May 24th, 2008 at 6:48 am
Excellent list.. although i disagree with it for the most part, it is still excellent.
4. capo - May 24th, 2008 at 6:48 am
WOW….you totally blew it on this one : (….have you actually listened to any of their albums?
5. stevenh - May 24th, 2008 at 7:09 am
Retitle as IMHO…
I would love to get 1 unit of any currency for all the “I disagree with …”, ” type messages that are sure to follow.
6. Ranen - May 24th, 2008 at 7:17 am
Comfortably Numb? Time? Run Like Hell? I think you missed a lot of the better songs in order to make a personal top ten list. These may be your favorite Floyd songs but they are not really a good batch for most fans.
7. MojoRisin - May 24th, 2008 at 7:25 am
Yeah number one for me would have to be comfortably numb (live pulse performance)
8. F.McClure - May 24th, 2008 at 7:33 am
I got three words for you: TIME and COMFORTABLY NUMB. What were you thinking? Pink Floyd is my personal favorite band, and I think its great you include more obscure works of art like Echoes and Dogs, but how could you forget the two most popular Floyd songs in history? Work harder next time, dude. Use headphones. Like your supposed to.
9. Csimmons - May 24th, 2008 at 7:34 am
Glad you stayed away from “the wall” and excellent list.
10. Denashi - May 24th, 2008 at 7:42 am
Awesome list!
PF is one of my all-time favourite bands!
One thing though - I would have made a few changes, not all of the songs on this list would make it to my top 10, but hey… personal taste eh?
Nice job!
11. JohnofSane - May 24th, 2008 at 7:56 am
This is the stupidest list on here. You missed alot of good songs.
12. islanderbst - May 24th, 2008 at 8:12 am
Not a Pink Floyd fan (cant get into any band doing the high-concept, music as art-form thing), but wondering where that song “Money” is at?
13. Kreachure - May 24th, 2008 at 8:21 am
So nobody likes The Wall? That’s too bad, cause that’s pretty much all I really recognize from Pink Floyd!
*ducks to avoid incoming tomatoes*
14. Harsha - May 24th, 2008 at 8:30 am
Ok stevenh you get 1 yen for every disagree comment ;). You make only 1$ for every 103 comments. ….Actually on this particular list you might make a lot of money.
15. Ant-LOX - May 24th, 2008 at 8:35 am
I’m a huge Floyd fan, and pretty much agree with everything except #10, I’d throw “The Trial” in that spot.
16. esa - May 24th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Thanks for staying off The Wall.
I personally hate when uber mainstream songs are on a top ten list because then it seems as if the list maker doesn’t even listen to the band.
But seriously, good job on this list.
17. romerozombie - May 24th, 2008 at 8:49 am
Interstellar Overdrive and Brain Damage (I seriously freaked out when I first heard that, I felt like I was high or something) are top 1 and 2 for me. Not heard most of the songs on the list.
Careful with that axe, Eugene.
18. WarningDontReadThis - May 24th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Haha, can’t wait to see what kind of comments this list gets.
Nice on by the way, I haven’t listened to pink floyed that much at least now I know where to start.
19. tampon_juice - May 24th, 2008 at 9:03 am
brain damage, eclipse, another brick in the wall, hey you, one of these days, breathe. where da hell r all these songs
!?
20. Vera Lynn - May 24th, 2008 at 9:08 am
I am a huge Floyd fan. I have the prism tatooed on my shoulder. I LOVE all their stuff. I would have had a different list but I do like all these songs. Great job on getting the performances. Fun to watch them play. But I do think you will catch a lot of heat.
21. 20Fan20 - May 24th, 2008 at 9:23 am
You should not include songs just because they were popular but they should not be left off because other people like them either.
I think this list kinda of suffers in the sense that you avoided great songs because others listened to them.
If not, you might take another listen to The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon I think you will like them.
Thanks for the list, I look forward to more music lists.
22. Eleutheria - May 24th, 2008 at 9:24 am
You’d better be comfortably numb to catch the flak from the inevitable comments… might want to take some time (and money) to run like hell?
23. Felmin - May 24th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Why do so many people comment with differing opinions to the creator of the list? The author picked 10 of his favorite Pink Floyd songs, not yours. No one cares if he omitted your favorites, that isn’t the point of this list.
brain damage, eclipse, another brick in the wall, hey you, one of these days, breathe. where da hell r all these songs
!?
Tampon Juice’s name in of itself illegitamizes his post. He could have written the most profound, thought provoking and eloquently worded response and it wouldn’t have mattered because of his vial choice of screen name. And it just so happens that he also types like 12 year old with internet shorthand like “r” in place of “are”. Two extra letters and you won’t look like a dumbass. Regardless of his linguistic skills, all he does is list some of his top songs and then asks in an indignant manner emphasized with an exclamation mark AND a question mark. This insinuates that he is outraged that his favorite songs weren’t chosen. What an injustice that the creator of the list has a differing opinion to yours.
Any list of “TOP TEN” people will have discrepancies with. Just listen to the songs and move on.
24. Chris - May 24th, 2008 at 9:41 am
good list, but you missed a couple of really good songs. Also astraya (1st comment), I hope you are not saying that Led zeppeling is bad.
25. Giant Peach - May 24th, 2008 at 9:42 am
Why would people comment with their discrepancies to the author’s opinions? We don’t care what your top Pink Floyd songs are Tampon_Juice and your name itself illegitamizes anything you have to say.
26. Cedestra - May 24th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Unusual choice of songs, to say the least. I have my list of favorites, Pink Floyd being one of my favorite bands, but I don’t think I would have made a top ten list out of it. I love Dark Side of the Moon, but I actually liked PF sans Roger Waters better. A Momentary Lapse… and the Division Bell are my two favorite albums, followed by Dark Side… I know my opinion on those songs is not popular, although I have heard many through and through PF fans say that “Learning to Fly” was their best song ever.
27. schecter99 - May 24th, 2008 at 9:46 am
way off
28. J - May 24th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Yes!! Glad you picked the right number one. I would have never come back to this site
But really, where’s Comfortably Numb?
29. Dan - May 24th, 2008 at 10:08 am
looks like you annoyed a lot of people with this. I’ve been meaning to really listen to pink floyd for a long time, so this is where i’d start.
30. Kelsi - May 24th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Wait….realy? No Time? That song is one of my all time favories. EVER. Can’t disagree with the number 1 spot…but the rest of the list is semi-whack.
31. That guy - May 24th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Good list. but personally i prefer Metallica
32. robotoisawesome - May 24th, 2008 at 10:51 am
I have to admit I am a gigantic pink floyd fan, and I am extremely glad to see some of their more obscure albums represented. In fact in my opinion Animals is their greatest album all things considered, but i have to admit comfortably numb would of had to make an appearance for me, it has one of the greatest guitar solos of all time!!
but rant aside great list!!
33. christopherborne - May 24th, 2008 at 10:55 am
I wanted to highlight all of Pink Floyd. And while it kinda sucks that Comfortably Numb or Time aren’t on there, I’m glad I got “Fat Old Sun”, which is very typical of many songs they were doing at the time (”Grantchester Meadows”, “If”, “Green is the Colour”, &c). While this may not be the BEST Pink Floyd songs, it is more representative of their history than a list of Dark Side and The Wall songs would have been.
34. robotoisawesome - May 24th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I have to say when i saw the gnome on there a little part of me got quite excited, i expected this list to be nothing but the wall and dark side of the moon so i was quite happy to see some of their more obscure work represented.
but seriously, i’d like to tell you a story
35. Mom424 - May 24th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Great Job CBorne! Personally I think The Wall to be over-played, over-produced, and over-rated. Much better choices here.
David Gilmour Rules.
By the way, I would take it as a compliment that tampon-juice (likely what’s in his cranium) disagrees with your picks.
36. Bad News - May 24th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Pink Floyd - Syd Barret
37. christopherborne - May 24th, 2008 at 11:03 am
and I’m not much of a fan of “Top 11″, “Top 12″, &c lists. Limiting the response is all the fun/difficulty.
38. lost 654 - May 24th, 2008 at 11:18 am
in the flesh?
39. jfrater - May 24th, 2008 at 11:45 am
I actually know very little about Pink Floyd - with the obvious exception being The Wall - so I liked this list a lot Christopherbourne - thanks for broadening my musical horizons
40. Mullaccio - May 24th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Thanks for the list. Disagree with it for the most part. Here is a few that would make it into mine that were not in this list.
-Interstellar Overdrive-(For its intense trippiness!)
-Any Colour You Like-(A song many years ahead of its time)
-One of These Days-(A truly rocking Floyd number)
-Bike-(A song which I believe sums up Barrett’s style, in particular, his lyrics.
I think the wall is extremely overrated and I dislike everything that case out after that. The Floyd still rule!!
41. Mullaccio - May 24th, 2008 at 11:54 am
case=came…..Apologies
42. PJMurphy - May 24th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
In the 70’s, I discovered Floyd and weed in the same month. 20 years later, I was smoking my first harvest at my first Floyd concert.
I have listened to all of it, repeatedly, but just can’t develop much of a taste for the Barrett years, with some notable exceptions.
Still, a great list, and you could probably have expanded it to 20 or 25 songs, and still have people bitching about omissions.
BTW, as I type this, “Learning to Fly” just came on the radio. Synchronicity, I guess.
43. christopherborne - May 24th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
For those of you who have no idea who I’m talking about when I say Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Syd Barrett, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason, the wikipedia article has a nice picture identifying the members.
44. christopherborne@yahoo.com - May 24th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
@Vera Lynn,
you are a bigger fan than I, apparently!
45. leinad - May 24th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
what a list! i dunno if i agree, but its great to see a whole list dedicated to pink floyd. my personal favorite is Echoes -greatest song in history-. but obviously, i think you left out some important tracks. great stuff still.
46. nzhdeh - May 24th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
comfortably numb is definetely top 10, i was surprised/disappointed it wasnt there =\
47. Dawn Bearer - May 24th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
I am disapointed
No Pink Floyd list should be devoid of songs like Money,Time, Comfortabley Numb, Another Brick In The Wall Pt.2, The Great Gig In The Sky ,or Hey You
48. Bass - May 24th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
astraya (1): Echem… FUGGU.
49. Spinner - May 24th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
While I could debate the other 9… ‘Wish you were here’ is up there in my all time favorites so , I shant debate
List is interesting in that it’s highlighted a few I hadn’t considered. Thanks for that.
50. marqueemark - May 24th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
could have been a top 100 list really, these guys will go down in history with names like mozart and beethoven, it is so much more than just music…
51. Blaxter - May 24th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
“Comfortably Numb”? “Money”? “Another Brick in the Wall”? “Time”? “See Emily Play”?
AAAAAAAAAARGGGGGHHHHHHHH………….. I’m sorry, but this list is an impossible dream.
52. jussanuddername - May 24th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Hello? Have a cigar.
53. Chalkwhite - May 24th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
I don’t get where all the hate for The Wall is coming from. That’s my favorite Floyd album, personally, and my favorite song is Nobody Home. I know I’m weird, though. I do think this should be a “My Favorite” instead of a “Top 10″, but his opinion is valid. I appreciate the love for Animals and Wish You Were Here, though.
54. trojan_man - May 24th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
#1 is my ring-tone. Good list.
55. thelith - May 24th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
yeah i’m disappointed with the list too. Liek most other people said you missed comfortably numb, time, have a cigar, and money . Comfortably numb has one of the most memorable solos in all of music history.
56. Vera Lynn - May 24th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Yes. I am the biggest fan ever. Love my tat. Smile every time I look at it. No one sings me lullabies…. I have every album and I love Syd’s solo stuff. Mad cap laughs. I will keep the video of him you posted. I have a picture of him on my dresser. He was so cute and so messed up. Im glad you included some obscure stuff.
57. Vera Lynn - May 24th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
I have Piper at the Gates of Dawn on vinyl, Floyd stickers on my car, and 2 framed concert posters in my bedroom. Tee shirts, backpacks, hats, etc.
58. bucslim - May 24th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
A difficult list to come up with, too much material to pick from, but I personally think the top ten doesn’t match my top ten - just an opinion. I think it becomes more difficult when you take into account that much of Floyd’s discography was created during the whole Album Oriented Rock era, in which there were great songs, but more to the point, great albums that were meant to be played as a whole. This is no more true than Dark Side of the Moon. There really isn’t a dud on the entire album. I would also put forth that argument for the Wall. And it’s part of the reason that Floyd was never a Top 40 type of a band.
I know I disagreed with the author, but coming up with my own top ten would be just as difficult and in some way downplay what’s listed which is still great stuff. I would have most certainly included “Money” and “Another Brick in the Wall” as well as “Great Gig in the Sky” “Time” and others. There’s plenty to choose from.
59. Ghostship - May 24th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
TIME, DUDE. TIME. WHERE IS TIME?????????
TIME!!!!!!!!!
60. Plucky_3 - May 24th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
OH MY GOD, YOU DID NOT INCLUDE TIME???? OH, I SHOULD JUST COME OVER TO YOUR HOUSE AND USE THE BATHROOM WITHOUT FLUSHING!
Relax guys, it’s a top 10 list and it’s his opinion. Some excellent songs in there, good list.
But he really should have included TIME!!
I’m coming over to your place.
61. Vera Lynn - May 24th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
jfrater You don’t know a lot of Floyd? You’ve never heard or seen the Australian PF? They are the greatest cover!! I know you are NZ but it’s close enough!
62. christopherborne@yahoo.com - May 24th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
I have a feeling that a Top 10 AC/DC list wouldn’t have created nearly so much controversy
63. dtidew - May 24th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Well wish you were here is definately number 1!
but you definately missed out on some: Time, Brain Damage/Eclipse, Mother, Comfortably Numb, Hey You, Another Brick in the Wall (all parts)
i could go on and on
64. KannonKitsune - May 24th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Its kinda ridiculous that there are so many comments about not using songs from The Wall.
Don’t be pretentious people. Just because a something is popular doesn’t make it bad (doesn’t make it good), but its just hipster mentality to say “oh somebody knows what that is, god, now its not cool.”
Your supposed to like things because you like them, or dislike them because you dislike them, not go blindly with or against the masses.
The Wall is still damn good music.
65. Mullaccio - May 24th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I don’t like the wall for the sole reason of what it sounds like. There is a few half decent songs on it. But I just don’t like the cheesy 80s sound to it. More of a fan of the psychedelic music. It has nothing to do with what is cool or hip. I personally could not give a fiddler’s fart about what is cool.
66. goof_ball - May 24th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
yay pink floyd! i like how the videos came from different sites lol
67. MPW - May 24th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
vera lynn: if you read list you wold have noticed jfrater did not right this list
i am just sayin’
68. MPW - May 24th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
mind the spelling and grammar errors my keyboard is actng up
69. slice paper wrists - May 24th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
a gnome called grimble gromble…not a big fan on old floyd, i think its a bit nutty. Some good songs on the list though and some to check out. I would have included comfortably numb, welcome to the machine, goodbye bluesky, fearless. but hey floyd touches people in different ways!
70. Vera Lynn - May 24th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
MPW no kidding.I was responding to #39 where jfrater signed in. I am not that ignorant even if i’m a PF fan. Take a look around you. Observe the obvious. Dont jump to conclusions.
‘And I’m most obliged to you for making it clear that I’m not here” -Syd Barrett
71. Vera Lynn - May 24th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
MPW and it’s “write” not “right”
72. Chris G - May 24th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
The only choice here I like is Dogs. I also like Careful With That Axe Eugene, Have a Cigar, and really nothing else Pink Floyd have ever done. They are pretentious, suicidally depressing crap.
73. MPW - May 24th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
my mistake i apologize for my ignorance
however, you need to learn to correct your errors before you correct mine
“take a look around you”
74. MPW - May 24th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
i said nothing about pf fans being ignorant so why dont you not jump to coclusions
75. MPW - May 24th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
conclusions
76. Vera Lynn - May 24th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
MPW
What’s wrong with “Take a look around you”? And I suggest we declare a truce. I dont want to argue. If you want to meet foe coffee or a beer, let’s debate it ourselves. “Life is a short warm momemt and death is a long cold rest”
77. Vera Lynn - May 24th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
MPW
And that’s “for” not “foe”. I apologize.
78. MPW - May 24th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
your right i am sorry
btw, i am not a beer drinker, plus it may be hard if were from different states/countries
im from california
oh yeah “take a look around you” only works if spoken not written:)
79. leesh - May 24th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
The Great Gig In The Sky is my favourite pink floyd song
80. Ro - May 25th, 2008 at 12:05 am
uhhhhhh ……doesn’t any one here listen to rap? All these rock lists one after another. Looks like I’ll have to write (The Top 10 Notorious B.I.G songs)
81. Miss Destiny - May 25th, 2008 at 12:16 am
Not really my cup of tea, but I’m sure my bf will be happy to see this list, he’s quite fond of Pink Floyd.
I do respect the decision to pick more obscure songs than taking the easy route and going with choices everyone knows just to avoid conflict in the comments. No matter how big the list is there are always going to be people (and I myself am guilty of this, though I try not to be a meanie about it) who say, “You didn’t include THAT?!”
I notice a lack of music lists about country music, not a lot of fans here on LV?
82. mkarner007 - May 25th, 2008 at 12:41 am
time? money? have a cigar?
i mean its great that you listed some of thier more non-mainstream songs like jugband blues but you could find better syd-era floyd than that.
but you did get it right with wish you were here at number 1
83. mkarner007 - May 25th, 2008 at 12:42 am
and me thinks you should do a top ten muse list.
84. CCJ - May 25th, 2008 at 2:21 am
I have a feeling that Jamie might have known this list would cause quite the controversy. With the relocation and everything, he knew he would be busy for the next few days, and probably wanted to create a discussion among the group. That’s why he submitted this list.
By the way, good job with the list CBourne. Not the same as my personal list would have been and if anyone doesn’t agree with me, then they are wrong….about anything….I am the center of the universe and all should kneel before me and my personal preference of Pink Floyd songs.
85. astraya - May 25th, 2008 at 3:07 am
Chris (24) and Bass (48) Please look up the phrase “tongue-in-cheek” in a good dictionary. I pass no judgment on Led Zeppelin.
86. Diamond_Dragon - May 25th, 2008 at 3:34 am
Why do people have to be so rude commenting? :S
Make your own bloody list if you dont agree with this one
“How I wish, how I wish you were here. We’re just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl, Year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found?
The same old fears. Wish you were here.”
Wishing You Were Here…
This song gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it!
I like your list at least!
87. flamiejamie - May 25th, 2008 at 4:12 am
Are you serious?
If you must be so opinionated then could you at least make it top 25 songs? That way, you might include some of the real masterpieces.
YOU ARE MISSING:
Comfortably Numb
Sheep
Time
Have A Cigar
Brain Damage
Interstellar Overdrive
Hey You
Money
Another Brick In the Wall, Part Two
Welcome to the Machine
When the Tigers Broke Free
See Emily Play
In The Flesh?
Astronomy Domine
One of These Days
The Fletcher Memorial Home
Eclipse
Sorrow
Atom Heart Mother
The Great Gig In the Sky
High Hopes
Coming Back to Life
Have you actually listened to Pink Floyd for the past fourty years? Or did you just think of the idea, research it for a day, and paste a two sentence excerpt for each song you happed to find? I’m just surprised you didn’t alphabetically order the list to find your winner.
88. diamond - May 25th, 2008 at 6:36 am
whoa controversy!!
It’s impossible to write a top 10 floyd list in my opinion, having tried to do it several times before. To be honest, it’s hard to go WRONG with Pink Floyd, which is what makes them so fantastic to begin with.
89. byrneman - May 25th, 2008 at 7:35 am
Obscured By Clouds? More? Meddle? How can these have zero representation?? Meanwhile, songs by Syd Barrett when he went solo made the list? Re-Do!
90. robneiderman - May 25th, 2008 at 8:48 am
I’m not a huge Pink Floyd fan, but I like some songs. You missed some of my favorites, like Learning to Fly and Us and Them, but I won’t fault you for it. A list like this pretty much ends up being “My 10 favorite Pink Floyd Songs” rather than “Top 10″. I’m not sure there’s an accurate way to measure a song’s objective greatness, and who wants to see a “Most Popular” list? Still, a list with 10 clips of awesomeness is alright by me.
91. CodFish - May 25th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Attn: byrneman
You are obviously a pretender, and not a contender to be a real Pink Floyd fan.
The #4 selection, “Echoes”, *IS* on “Meddle”!
It’s probably my second fave Floyd album after “Animals”.
Christopher Borne, I really liked your list. Good job! The only thing that would have made it better would have been if you had used the video for “Echoes” from Floyd’s “Live at Pompeii” video.
92. Ashikins - May 25th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
umm… all i have to say is TIME!!!!! that is by far their best song. i enjoy the others but “Time” should have been in that list somewhere… :-/
93. Vera Lynn - May 25th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Ashikins I love “Live from Pompeii” I think it is one of their best.So fun to watch them be them, and also to play. Roger Waters hitting the gong, the veins in his arm when he plays, them talking about pie in the cafeteria. It is so wild to see them in their own skin.
94. Polly Odyssey - May 25th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
I think I had some kind of seizure once I saw this. Mainly because Pink Floyd is my favorite band, ever. This list was not up my alley, it IS that alley. Thank You!
But it needs more Interstellar Overdrive.
95. 17inSoCal - May 25th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Dogs and Sheep are easily my favorite Pink Floyd songs. And I’ve heard most of their music.
96. rp - May 25th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
I like that you included some Piper stuff which makes it all the more surprising to me that you left “Bike” off the list. Love that live version of Dogs. I’ve just about worn that dvd out and it is particularly responsible for reducing the life of my Outlaw amp.
97. christopherborne@yahoo.com - May 25th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
@Codfish,
I really didn’t feel like ripping/editing the Pompeii DVD; it was just easier to find the Remember that Night version. Both versions are great, though.
Maybe I should do a Worse of PF list. I think that one would start even more shinola.
98. Late O’Day - May 25th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Oh, I get it. It’s “cool” to omit “Comfortably Numb” since it’s wildly popular among Floyd fans and anything popular can’t possibly be good, right?
You look so much more intellectual and cultured by naming lesser known fare. If someone tells you they enjoyed reading “Moby-Dick”, you’re the type who rolls his eyes in affectation and declares with a heavy sigh: “I suppose it was okay — but ‘Omoo’ was Melville’s true masterpiece.”
99. rp - May 25th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
When the Tigers Broke Free gives me goosebumps. Bike is beautiful in its offbeat simplicity (a Barrett trademark). Interstellar Overdrive was probably their breakthrough song. See Emily Play makes me smile (even when sober). But my all-time fave may be Fearless. I could listen to that song over and over and still love it. And I’m not even an Arsenal fan. The entire Dark Side of the Moon album is classic. And the later Roger Waters dominated stuff (The Wall, The Final Cut) ain’t so bad either.
I guess my point is that these types of lists are very personal and subjective and shouldn’t be judged too harshly. Pink Floyd has been around since… well… dirt, and there are so many options.
100. rp - May 25th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Late:
I’m guessing that submitter (an obvious fan) has heard those more popular songs so many times that he’s become “Numbed” by them. At least, that is how I feel. I grew up on The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon, and even Animals, then discovered the earlier stuff which has become more recently ingrained in my head. So if I were to try a list, I’d probably be guilty of the same. I really doubt if he’s intentionally trying to prop up the obscure songs.
101. Alicia - May 25th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
I was considerably disappointed with this list, tbh.
102. Champiñon - May 25th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
Awful list. It seems like you never listened to pink floyd…
103. dr. Hannibal Lecter - May 26th, 2008 at 3:26 am
Well, I’d just take The Pulse and create a top 10 out of that.
Kidding.
Nice list, although obviously personal top 10.
Oh man..look what you made me do. Now I have to listen to PF today.
104. Shadow - May 26th, 2008 at 5:00 am
While I was disappointed to not find “Hey You” on this particular list, it was only because that song and a couple of others that were omitted are special to me, as I discovered the Floyd at a difficult time in my life and their music sort of helped to smooth over the worst edges of that time and make life bareable(sp?).
To those of you who are bitching about your favorites being omitted: how do you make a top ten list of music from a band that created music as an art; not as a performance piece? How do you narrow down the ten best songs from a band whose music was ALL great? You can’t. Hence the dsiagreement here. Keep that in mind please.
105. krishna - May 26th, 2008 at 5:49 am
Realy shocked to see the list ….cant believe that
“Another Brick in the wall”,”Comfortbly Numb”,”Hey You” in the list
106. christopherborne@yahoo.com - May 26th, 2008 at 7:29 am
@krishna
“Comfortably Numb” and “Hey You” I could get behind. But “Another Brick in the Wall”??? Come On. That song is annoying more than anything else.
107. georg - May 26th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Kudos for including two syd barrett-penned tracks on your list. The only good songs in floyd’s entire career were written by barrett. Everything else they ever did is nothing but ponderous, bloated garbage. Second most overrated band in rock history (after the beatles, of course.)
108. madgett - May 26th, 2008 at 11:38 am
This is a very personal list, to say the least. But then it was written with the intention to spark controversy, wasn’t it?
109. Mark - May 26th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
I’m not going to agree/disagree with your choices, but I’m glad to see some more obscure songs here.
Barrett was a genius.
I’m a bit disappointed with your description of “Momentary Lapse of Reason” though.
110. Le Master - May 26th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
The list was really that bad until it got to number one. “Wish You Were Here”? Are you joking? That’s Pink Floyd at its worst.
111. CK2005 - May 26th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
It’s funny how angry people because someone likes different songs by a band that THEY LIKE THEMSELVES! Sheesh!
This was a very good list, as I expected. I’ve yet to come across a bad list on this site.
first post by me btw woo
112. CK2005 - May 26th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
how angry people get*
113. christopherborne@yahoo.com - May 26th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
@Mark:
I did say “arguably”, so argue!
@Le Master:
Are you kidding? “WYWH” is their best! Come on!
114. christopherborne@yahoo.com - May 26th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
@georg:
How can you like Syd and dislike the Beatles?
115. Cedestra - May 26th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
I took a listen to the songs I hadn’t heard and realized that I do NOT like Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Hey, at least I know now
116. TrilithonOfKutulu - May 26th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Syd’s solo work is good…especially The Madcap Laughs.
117. christopherborne@yahoo.com - May 27th, 2008 at 5:03 am
@TrilithonOFKutulu:
Opel’s probably my favorite. That title track is just so haunting and beautiful
118. DA MAN - May 27th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
WOW! I agree with every list on this site except for this one. I like how you included some lesser known work off of The Piper At The Gates of Dawn but why would you list only one track from The Dark Side of The Moon and none from The Wall? Even though The Wall isn’t there best album and it does contain the extremely overrated, “Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2″ It still has great tracks like, “In The Flesh?” “Hey You” “Mother” and one of there all time best “Comfortably Numb.” And (on the subject of Dark Side) no “Money” or “Great Gig in The Sky” This list is a true disappointment.
119. CodFish - May 27th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Attn: Le Master
You, sir, don’t know what in the hell you are talking about.
“So, so you think you can tell,
Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field,
from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?”
YOU OBVIOUSLY CAN’T!
120. Adam - May 28th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Oy, you missed out on quite a lot.
121. christopherborne@yahoo.com - May 28th, 2008 at 10:09 am
The a cappella version of Dark Side is amazing.
http://www.darksidevoices.com/thealbum.phtml
122. Steeler Rob - May 28th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
I absolutely love “Comfortably Numb”. The version from the Pulse tour DVD is, in my opinion, the greatest solo ever. Gilmore is a living legend.
I also for some odd reason like “Bike”! The lyics are very Syd Barrett like!
123. Bones - May 29th, 2008 at 3:30 am
i feel like a sheep for saying this but hell it’s my opinion too.
“Comfortably Numb”=all time fave Pink Floyd.
“Time”=another simply fantastic song.
but then it is a very nice list. you can’t really go wrong with Pink Floyd. even “The Wall”. though very overrated it is still an extremely misinterpreted and underrated album. it gets the wrong attention from ignorant people.
124. gman62 - May 29th, 2008 at 7:16 am
Glad to see you put something from Animals on the list. That is my all-time overall favorite Floyd album. It has a nice, circular pattern to it.
125. Mark - May 29th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Ah, it’s impossible to say what the best Pink Floyd song is. They are all awesome in their own way.
126. choadius - May 29th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
CBorne,
Although my list would be different, I personally liked yours because it prompted me to think about and listen to a few things that I haven’t heard for a long time.
You have attempted a difficult task and should be commended for your bravery.
That being said, I may have included Interstellar Overdrive, but it would be hard to narrow it down to ten since the band has such a large number of great songs. Unlike many, I was actually quite glad that Money and Time were not included as they would not make my top ten either.
127. Janet - May 30th, 2008 at 12:44 am
I sure would of thought that “Run Like Hell’ and “Comfortably Numb” would of made this list for sure.
128. Janet - May 30th, 2008 at 12:52 am
I cant believe that “Comfortably Numb” and “Run Like Hell”,did not make YOUR top 10,cuz they(those two songs that I just listed)do make it by the radios top 10 and it was those two songs they had as encores at the three concerts that I saw them perform. You know the old saying “Always save the best for last”.
129. rp - May 30th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Cbourne:
I love Opel, too, as raw as it is… If Barrett had lasted a few more years and had the same production, well, this might have been a completely different list.
130. Bianca - June 5th, 2008 at 7:28 am
Wish you were here…is my favourite song of all time!!! Brilliant number one..I still think you made a mistake by not including ..The Great gig in the sky!!!!
131. Juliana - June 25th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Oh God! Wish You Were Here??? Cheeeese! Where’s Comfortably Numb????
132. rockon - June 29th, 2008 at 5:28 am
i think ‘coming back to life’ must feature on this list
133. this list sucks - July 10th, 2008 at 2:30 am
Comfortably numb?
Time?
Interstellar Overdrive?
TAKE THY STETHOSCOPE AND WALK!?!
134. Mike D - July 24th, 2008 at 9:19 am
not that I’d expect it on anyone else’s list, but my personal favorite is Fearless from Meddle.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWH01DBJxlo I love the acoustic mood and the lyrics speak of personal power. Meddle is awesome and maybe underrated.
135. christopherborne@yahoo.com - July 24th, 2008 at 10:52 am
@Mike D:
I love “Fearless”! It and “Wot’s…Uh the Deal” are definitely on my top ten!
136. Johan - July 30th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Kinda agree with Late O Days. I mean, it just seems as if the author is trying to be original or surprise us, since Comfortably Numb is the most popular Floyd song among fans. I mean, with that solo, it damn well should be.
BUT still good list. I wouldve put Echoes and Shine On 1st and 2nd, but thats just preference. Time also, rather than Us and Them off Dark Side, and the Great Gig is a phenomenal performance.
Im a fan thats never been a fan of the Syd Barrett era, I particularly dislike The Gnome and Bike, lol. But oh well.
By the way, whats with everyones hatred of the Wall? not their best work, but still an awesome album.
137. smr - August 14th, 2008 at 7:47 am
To my mind Saucerful of Secrets is under-rated. My opinion of it is that it showed how much Pink Floyd had matured. Yet I cannot understand why you chose The Gnome. My top 10 would have these;
1) Echoes
Dogs of War
2) Shine on you Crazy Diamond
3) Money
4) What do you want from me
5) Us and Them
6) One of these Days
7) Welcome to the Machine
9) PowrTocH
10)Great gig in the Sky
138. rushfan - August 15th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Young Lust was my favorite for a while. Then Mother. Now pretty much all of Mettle.
139. jiminut - August 15th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
rushfan, Young Lust is one of those great rock ‘n roll songs. The Floyd is really kickin’ it there.
As far as “everyone’s hatred of the Wall” (Johan), I think it’s the natural love of the underdog versus the obvious choice. Frankly, I don’t know if I agree with “not their best work”. It’s certainly not my fave but that’s because it’s so dark and twisted. There’s not a whole lot of upliftment in the Wall. With some of their other material (Animals, Dark Side), it’s not exactly positive but it can be inspiring to the loner in all of us. Dogs, for example, is biting and nasty… if you’re a corporate type, which I’m not. Dark Side at times is a celebration of being a little bit loony.
But more to the point, The Wall is a tour de force. It’s what they (Roger, at least) were leading up to for the entire 1970’s. It’s remarkably cohesive, and clear. And there are plenty of great songs (Thin Ice, Blue Sky, Mother, Brick, Young Lust, Young Lust, Run Like Hell, the Trial, oh and these are just off the top of my head, I’m not looking at a list).
I like the whole career of Floyd. Oh, scratch that, I’ve never been able to get into the immediately post-Syd era, which I know makes me sacreligious (sp?).
140. Ford - October 14th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
10. Free Four
9. The Nile Song
8. Bike
7. Welcome to the Machine
6. A Pillow of Winds
5. Us and Them
4. Interstellar Overdrive
3. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
2. Dogs
1. Echoes
That’s my personal top ten Floyd songs.
I got to see them live in ‘88. It was an awesome show!! I did long for Waters to be there, but it was still worth it.
141. SPN_Watcher - November 29th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Ummm…Comfortably Numb should most definitely be on there. Like most of the ones here, but I am with others in the opinion that you missed the mark on this list.
But hey- you like what you like, right?
142. Stedzo - December 8th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Love Pink Floyd, so just seeing a list with their name on it is enough for me. Animals is my favorite album after Dark Side so I could add Sheep to this. Feerless is another gem I would have included. Time is a classic, but in the end I get the meaning of your list and any true PF fan would appreciate your list even if they don’t necessarily agree wit it.
143. chux - December 17th, 2008 at 9:18 am
high hopes, welcome to the machine, saucerful of secrets
144. Vera Lynn - December 17th, 2008 at 10:09 am
I have every album including solo work. Thet are absolutely my favorite band. I would love to have a PF lunchbox.
145. pooya - December 31st, 2008 at 3:12 pm
you forget (hey you)is the best
146. adam - December 31st, 2008 at 9:48 pm
at the risk of being flamed, I just could never get into Pink Floyd. I think their stuffs ok, but nothing too special. Just my thought.
The Beatles, thats a different story
147. rushfan - December 31st, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Adam ~ Just out of curiosity, what don’t you like? Have you listened to Mettle? It’s a good album. Don’t feel bad, not every band is for every body. My best friend doesn’t like Led Zeppelin and I used to think it was weird, but you get to a point where you realize, hey, different strokes for different folks, right? Keep on keepin’ on.
148. adam - January 1st, 2009 at 11:10 am
Just seemed like the comments needed a bit of a kick in the arse. See Evan’s comment (#2) and the shitstorm that followed on the top 15 beatles songs list. Can’t let a silly Beatles list beat a Floyd list on comments. I’d actually take Zepp or PF over the beatles any day of the week.
149. screamwriter - January 3rd, 2009 at 12:13 pm
LOL@ Jugband Blues. I love this song but its much more a Syd Barret song I would say. I also think that its your list so its fair to post what YOU feel the best songs are. When someone else posts a nice list of bootleg clips they can have their own say
Its nice to know some others know a few of the pre- DSOTM songs.
