Top 10 Evils of Scientology
Published on January 28, 2008 - 172 Comments
This list is a combination of other lists I have already written about scientology but with more of a focus on the deaths caused by the organization. Be sure to read the afterword for details on the up coming protests against the group.
“I have taken what 1 consider to be the most expedient way out of my present predicament. I harbor no resentment against anyone, except the Church of Scientology. They have a great deal to do with my demise. To play with people’s defense mechanisms in the manner that they do is a criminal thing at best. l hope they can be outlawed.” — Suicide note by James Hester
10. Scientology is a Secret Organization
The swift and calculated responses from the group have managed to do what no other organisation or government has done - censor certain information from the internet. You can find out how to make a bomb on the internet, but you can not find out what you have to do to pass the top levels in the Church of Scientology. Ironically, considering they are so secretive, it does not stop them using information taken from people they audit against them if they turn on the group. This would be the same as a person confessing to a priest, leaving the Church, and having the priest publish their confession on the internet.
9. L. Ron Hubbard Was a Drug Abuser
L Ron Hubbard was a drug abuser, which is ironic considering the organisation is very anti-drugs and even runs an organisation called Narconon to help people get off drugs. His son, Ronald, had this to say:
“I have personal knowledge that my father regularly used illegal drugs including amphetamines, barbituates and hallucinogens. He regularly used cocaine, peyote, and mescaline.” — Ronald DeWolf a.k.a. L. Ron Hubbard, Jr. Affadavit in Schaick v. Church of Scientology, US District Court Mass., No. 79-249
When Hubbard was in Las Palmas during 1967 he wrote a letter to his wife. In it Hubbard tells his wife: “I’m drinking lots of rum and popping pinks and greys.” See the decision by Judge Paul G. Breckenridge, Jr. in Scientology v. Armstrong, Los Angeles Superior Court, Case No. C 420153.
8. L. Ron Hubbard Was a Liar
Mr Hubbard told his followers that he was Nuclear Physicist:
Developed by L. Ron Hubbard, C.E., Ph.D., a nuclear physicist, Scientology has demonstrably achieved this long-sought goal. Doctor Hubbard, educated in advanced physics and higher mathematics and also a student of Sigmund Freud and others, began his present researches thirty years ago at George Washington University.
[Hubbard, “P.E. Handout”, HCO Information Letter of 14 April 1961]
In fact, Hubbard had no scientific degrees. In February 1953 he decided to obtain a “degree” from Sequoia University, a notorious “degree mill” in Los Angeles that was eventually shut down by the Californian state government in 1958. [Quoted in Russell Miller, Bare-Faced Messiah, page 212].
7. Dirty Tricks
Scientology is famous for using dirty tricks against its detractors. The worst of these tricks is called Fair Game. The organisation claims to have ceased using fair game but many people have experienced harassment since that claim was made. What is fair game?
“May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.” Hubbard
As part of fair game, Scientology members have created and distributed pamphlets full of lies and slander against people who have publicly protested against them.
6. Anti-Psychiatry
Hubbard (founder of Scientology) decided that psychiatrists were an ancient evil that had been a problem for billions of years. He taught that they assisted the evil alien Lord Xenu in his genocide 75 million years ago. The results of Scientology’s hatred of medicine and psychiatry has lead to numerous deaths. The second half of this list describes five of those deaths:
5. Kyle Thomas Brennan
Kyle Brennan was a young man who suffered from depression. He lived with his mother as his father (a scientologist) lived in Clearwater Florida to be close to the organization’s headquarters. The father regularly sent Scientology materials to his son which Kyle considered ridiculous. Kyle visited his father for a holiday and died in his care. According to Kyle’s mother: “I am uncertain as to what unfortunate events led to the tragic death of my dear son, who at the time was staying with his Scientologist father. I can say that his depression medication was not found on his person when the police searched the crime scene. I was also informed that when Kyle’s father found him he waited forty-five minutes before calling for medical assistance. He called a fellow Scientologist first, and then waited for him to arrive on the scene before calling an ambulance or the police. ”
4. Elli Perkins
On March 13, 2003, Jeremy Perkins, a 28 year old untreated schizophrenic, stabbed his mother Elli 77 times. She bled to death on her bedroom floor. Jeremy is currently being held at Rochester Psychiatric Center, having been found not responsible for Elli’s murder by reason of mental disease or defect. Jeremy, under the care of the CoS was taking vitamins for his mental disorder, rather than his prescribed schizophrenia medicine.
3. Josephus Havenith
An autopsy report lists his death as “probable drowning” but notes that his head was not under water. He died in February 1980 at the Scientology Fort Harrison Hotel in a bathtub filled with water so hot it had burned his skin off.
2. Heribert Pfaff
According to the records, Heribert P. died august 28, 1988, during the night from a heavy epileptic attack. He hit his head on the night table. The scientology doctor reports that he prescribed vitamins for his patient -despite regular attacks- instead of treating him with proper medication. Such medication was indeed not detected in his blood during the post-mortem examination.
1. Lisa McPherson
On December 5, 1995, Lisa McPherson died. Scientology had held her against her will for 17 days. During that time, she tried to leave, became violent, and refused to eat. At the time of her death, she had bruises and abrasions on her body, and she had lost over 30 pounds in just 17 days.
Some text on this page is taken from the website Scientology Associated Deaths - I have shown just 5 of the many many deaths listed there.

john: hear hear!
3. King of the Horizon - January 28th, 2008 at 7:44 am
i completly agree with what anonymous does but by trying to shut them down because the church denies free speech is going to get played against them saying they are denying the churchs free speech
4. Anonymous - January 28th, 2008 at 7:46 am
the people calling themselves anonymous are from sites like 4chan.org and ytmnd.com
5. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 7:46 am
King of the Horizon: I see your point, but I think anonymous are trying (more than anything) to bring some of the organization’s atrocities to the public eye - which might help to reduce the number of people taken in by their brainwashing in the future.
6. purdnasty - January 28th, 2008 at 7:54 am
no matter what your background is you should oppose this, not as a religion but as a violation to the natural rights of every individual
7. JwJwBean - January 28th, 2008 at 7:58 am
Does Scientology and Mormon have a lot of similarities? They both seem to have many secrets. I think I will have to read Dianetics. We have it here on our bookshlef. My husband read it. We were at a festival and there was a scientology booth. They had one of those “rate your stress” meters or something like that. You put your hands on two metal handlebar type things and a needle goes up and down on some numbers. My husband knows how these work and how it can be manipulated. He was showing the poor little girl working it that it is all bullshit. I hope she learned something.
8. dangorironhide - January 28th, 2008 at 8:00 am
CoS FTL. You shyould have a second section on Scientology lists, you’ve got so many of them!
They can all rot in hell. I’m surprised you can do so much research on them without going on a murderous rampage around their nearest ‘church’!
What pisses me off is the way they call themselves ’scientologists’. As if anything they do is in any way scientific.
Excellent list. Methinks we need more of them, and to spread them further around the internets so more people can join the crusade!
9. sue - January 28th, 2008 at 8:11 am
I think scientology is creepy, and moreless a cult. And I hate the way certain celebrities are making it seem like its the next best thing since whatever.
10. Sam - January 28th, 2008 at 8:16 am
Scientology is the most ridiculous “religion” ever!
11. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 8:17 am
JwJwBean: good on your husband! As for similarities in Mormonism and Scientology - they are both secretive and both founded by “odd” people
dangorironhide: this is only the third one believe it or not. I have mentioned aspects of them on others though.
sue: yeah - the celebrity thing makes it seem like it is okay and can trick a lot of people.
12. dangorironhide - January 28th, 2008 at 8:20 am
Only the third? I reckon you need enough to make a new section then
I think the madness of Tom Cruise isn’t helping scientology at all. He’s making it into a joke.
13. filipinoknight - January 28th, 2008 at 8:43 am
I just never understood how they got the status of a church in any country. They are a cult founded by a science fiction writer. CoS was probably founded on cocaine binge. I do agree though they need to be stopped.
14. heavybison - January 28th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Which makes me wonder…just how are people suckered into it in the first place…
15. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 8:46 am
heavybison: that is the problem - it is because of brainwashing - many people are defenceless against the organization - something they take full advantage of.
16. SlickWilly - January 28th, 2008 at 8:47 am
Hmmm….interesting list. I’ve always despised scientology with a passion, for reasons 5-10 listed above, among others. However, of the five people listed above, only #1 can be linked conclusively to scientology, and even then to a particular handful of scientologists, which the CoS is quick to point out whenever anybody brings this up.
I agree that the word needs to be spread about the evils of scientology (as there are many), but we can’t jump to conclusions and rely on anecdotal evidence to make a case against ANYONE, and that includes the CoS. It should be noted that scientology is harmless, just as is mormonism, christianity, and judaism. It is the Church of scientology that is evil. A belief is just a belief, no matter how ridiculous it is. The people behind the belief are the dangerous ones.
A GREAT anti-scientology site is Operation Clambake, which has records one MANY people the CoS has affected. I recommend a visit to that site if you want the whole scope of the evils of the CoS, not just suspicious deaths, but a full debriefing of the Fair Game policy, w/ actual CoS documents, as well as numerous stories of people affected by said policy. Not to mention a full overview of the CoS chast system, including how much money one has to pay to gain ranks. The full CoS doctrine can be viewed there, so I think it would be prudent to point the viewers of this list in that direction.
17. SlickWilly - January 28th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Heavybison:
The method for suckering people in is insidious. The CoS members will stop you on the street, very discreetly, and ask if you want to take a personality test. This bogus “test” simply identifies if you are the type of person most likely to allow yourself to get sucked in and pay vast sums of money. Then they tell you you are depressed and offer free moral and ethical counseling. During these sessions, they hook you up to an e-meter, which I’m not sure if it does anything at all, but most likely it is a crude form of lie detector. They ask you increasingly personal questions and record the whole thing for posterity. In this way they amass a file of all your deepest and darkest secrets. See the problem here?
Those not suckered in after this point are muscled in through blackmail. Those who are suckered in but become aware of the problem are blackmailed into staying and paying. The others are the breed that actually believe the CoS has the path to salvation.
Check out the site I pointed out in my above post, Operation Clambake. (Named because Scientologists believe human beings evolved from clams
)
18. Harsha - January 28th, 2008 at 9:16 am
Jfrater you forgot Tom Cruise. The guy is a celeb and all of a sudden he’s on scientology propaganda mode. His popularity can be used to influence a whole lot of kids!
19. Derek99 - January 28th, 2008 at 9:24 am
All hail Xenu
20. Mystern - January 28th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Awesome list. How about one for the LDS church?
JwJwBean and jfrater: One fascinating similarity between CoS and LDS is they both believe in aliens.
CoS- Xenu and such; LDS- There are millions (or at least thousands) of worlds where people live and worship Jesus and God. It’s worth noting that LDS doctrine also believes that God lives on his own planet (called Kolob) in some distant part of the galaxy. It’s said that 1 day on Kolob is 1000 years on Earth.
21. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Harsha: did you watch the recent documentary with him that caused all of the sudden onslaught of info on the group? In the intro, David Miscavige (the current boss of the group) explained that a person in Cruise’s position needs to use it to spread the group as far and wide as possible. I think Cruise has taken that to heart. He is a nut and should be blacklisted by Hollywood.
22. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Mystern: I seem to recall that Mormons believe that when you die you become a “god” of a planet - is that right?
23. Mystern - January 28th, 2008 at 9:43 am
jfrater: Not quite. If you are worthy and lived a good life and such then you live eternally in the highest “Kingdom of Heaven” (the Celestial Kingdom). Then you get to create your own race of spirit beings and rule over them as a god (in your own universe, no less).
A couple requirements for this to happen:
1. You have to be married in a Mormon temple ceremony
2. You have to have kept all the commandments (in the Mormon faith), or have repented of your sins.
3. There are no second chances. No matter how forgiving God may be while you’re on Earth after Jesus comes again there is no more repenting.
24. shaunism - January 28th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Have you seen the South Park on Scientology? BRILLIANT!
25. Miss Destiny - January 28th, 2008 at 9:56 am
I almost became a Mormon, I’ve known Mormons practically my whole life and I’ve never heard of any of what Mystern said.
Before you die you can be sealed with your family in a Temple and you can remain with them forever? That’s about as close as I’ve heard to what JFrater said.
I ended up not becoming a Mormon, not anything against the religion or its followers, I just decided I’d prefer to practice my beliefs as an unaffiliated individual.
26. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 9:59 am
shaunism: I haven’t seen it - I really must. Is the full thing on youtube?
27. Miss Destiny - January 28th, 2008 at 9:59 am
One thing I forgot to add, I totally agree with this Anonymous group. I hope they succeed in their goals.
28. shaunism - January 28th, 2008 at 10:01 am
jfrater: Not sure if the whole thing is, but you can definitely see the scene where they show what Scientologists believe. As it starts it does something like say “This is what Scientologists belive. No, really, this is what they believe.” It’s fantastic.
29. Sam - January 28th, 2008 at 10:04 am
I just went to the whyaretheydead.net website and I had no idea how many SoC related deaths there were or that there headquarters are in Clearwater Florida. Thats about an hour from where I live. Had now idea what was going on in my own back yard
30. jonathan - January 28th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Scientology is BEYOND stupid it’s like a waste of precious time man!!
31. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 10:05 am
jonathan: please stop using that variation of my username - it confuses people.
32. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 10:06 am
shaunism: I will definitely check it out!
Sam: scary huh?
33. Maxx_the_Slash - January 28th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Could have just combined lists into one, removed the other ones, then post an update stating the Scientology list was updated. You didn’t have to make it look like a new list that really has nothing at all different about it.
34. Mystern - January 28th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Miss Destiny: From the official LDS website,
Regarding Kolob
Regarding the Celestial Kingdom
As far as the other worlds go, that’s doctrine specific. I’ll try and get some exact quotes for you.
35. Mystern - January 28th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Miss Destiny: Here’s a couple exact quotes from LDS scripture:
D&C 76: 24) That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.
D&C 93: 10) The worlds were made by him; men were made by him; all things were made by him, and through him, and of him.
Moses 1: 33) And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.
36. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Mystern: clearly Mr Smith was a fan of the saccharine language of the King James Bible!
37. Funhat - January 28th, 2008 at 10:34 am
They aren’t anti-psychology, they are anti-psychiatry.
Big difference.
38. HexenBexen - January 28th, 2008 at 10:36 am
Great list! I hate Scientology, most of my family is involved in that shit and they disgust me to no end.
39. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 10:38 am
FYI this list is doing fairly well on reddit: Top 10 evils of Scientology - hopefully we will make it to the front page so more people can hear about the deaths caused by this cult!
40. Mystern - January 28th, 2008 at 10:40 am
jfrater: I agree. What’s funny is that if you ask most Mormons they believe that he actually had better grammar than the King James Version of the bible, pointing out errors in Hebrew words. The problem is, in original versions of the BoM there are far more grammatical errors than there are currently. There’s even an LDS apostle who makes this false claim.
41. ProgRapture - January 28th, 2008 at 10:45 am
I think Scientology may be the stupidest false religion ever invented, but they don’t offend me as much as the Westborough Baptist church. You know, the website godhatesfags.com. While Scientology is off making millions from retards like Tom Cruise and exploiting it’s retarded cult members, the Westborough church is trying to make the world a ‘better place’ by being total hypocrites by blatantly ignoring the New Testament, and adding a huge blemish to the good name of Christianity.
JFrater, this is one of the most enlightening websites I have ever seen, and I commend you for vocalizing the truths about the cult of Scientology.
42. Adam - January 28th, 2008 at 10:47 am
I just had to post on this topic as a lot of religious doctrine, talk and ‘righteousness’ really gets to me and I also cannot understand how one religion professes absolute truth once they realise another one has been about before it and whatnot!
Anyhow, Scientology is pure insanity from a SCIFI writer!!!
In regards to the recent Tom Cruise videos, has anyone seen this article comparing Mr Cruise to Goebbels? Very interesting….
http://www.guardian.co.uk/germany/article/0,,2244151,00.html
43. indiefreak19 - January 28th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I have always been wary of religion due to various experiences, being best friends with a gay guy and not being able to understand how one religion professes absolute truth when there are thousands of religions before them and will be thousands after!
Anyhow, Scientology pretty much ticks all of my doubt boxes!! A concept created in the past 50 years by a SCI-FI writer of a very dubious background with their recent activities of hounding people and attacking any defamatory comment, in some sort of ‘1984′ style!
And in relation to the Tom Cruise videos, here is an article comparing the man himself to good ol’ Goebbels….very interesting….

44. SlickWilly - January 28th, 2008 at 11:01 am
jfrater:
Can I advise posting a link to www.xenu.net? If anyone ever was anti-scientology, that is THE website to expose their atrocities.
45. SlickWilly - January 28th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Haha…I meant posting it at the bottom of the list.
46. DanOhh - January 28th, 2008 at 11:10 am
ProgRapture: I did a internship in Topeka, KS where the Westborough Baptist Church is located. These idiots are hated by every body there. The residents of Topeka hate then and through stuff a them since they are always on the street corners protesting everything. The police hate them because people are alway threating them the Phelps family orders the government to have police protection for them while they protest.
The Westborough Baptist Church has no affiliation w/ any other Baptist church in the U.S. The congregation is very small and made up mostly of family members that are lawyers.

49. Yogi Barrister - January 28th, 2008 at 11:20 am
“Do Scientology and Mormonism have a lot of similarities? ”
JW, they are similar in that both use modern texts that can be proven to be bogus. At least L. Ron Hubbard admitted that Scientology was a made up religion. The Book of Mormon is obviously fraudulent as well, whereas entire passages are lifted from a previously published book about the Lost Tribe of Israel.
Another similarity is in the way the two raise money hand over fist. But let’s face it, all religious texts are based on mythology. It’s just harder to prove thousands of years after the fact.
I just hope Jamie doesn’t end up on the top ten list of people Scientology would like to harm.
50. JMurf - January 28th, 2008 at 11:26 am
Scientology rocks.
Actually I might go out and buy some rocks to show how much they rock
51. purdnasty - January 28th, 2008 at 11:28 am
does anyone know how i can the church closest to me? the anonymous group has my support
52. riledupone - January 28th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Of all the objections I have to Scientology (and they are legion!) is their anti-psychiatry ban. I’ve battled depression all my life and take prescribed meds for it and will be taking them for the rest of my life. Without those meds, I would have died many years ago. Vitamins just don’t do the job. Another great list jfrater. I’m lovin’ the list universe
53. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 11:53 am
purdnasty: give this a try: Scientology Missions International Locator
54. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 11:54 am
is anyone thinking of picketing London? I might join in.
55. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Angela: you are awesome! thanks for finding that for us!
56. Mystern - January 28th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Why would you picket London? (sorry I just couldn’t resist)
57. heavybison - January 28th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Hey..if there’s a London uprising, count me in too…just make it a weekend pls..
58. Lindsay - January 28th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
This is so weird and messed up… Brainwashing is a sad thing.
59. Miss Destiny - January 28th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Mystern - Thanks for that, I really had no clue. I guess I passed on the details when I was learning.
60. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
wow - we are only 3 articles away from the front page of reddit! reddit comments for this topic
61. Mystern - January 28th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Miss Destiny: Yeah those are some things that you don’t learn until you get pretty deep into LDS doctrine.
62. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
I just recently heard Will Smith became a scientologist, WTF!?! The CoS is recruting celebrities left and right!
63. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
jfrater:Did you ever get a response from Yogi Barrister saying I could have his prize from the geek movies list? I really need to know.
64. SubliminalDeath666 - January 28th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
If I did have the proper equipment, I would bomb one of the Freewinds Scientologist cruise ships!! That would be the ultimate achievement!!!
65. crimsonchrissi - January 28th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Go nuts all you want people about Scientology-
All I know that 2nd pic of L. Ron is HAWWWWT!! xxoo
66. heavybison - January 28th, 2008 at 1:38 pm

67. SpookyMulder - January 28th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
The Scientologists have infiltrated out televisions now. I saw a commercial the other day from “thewaytohappiness.org.” I looked it up and it is a web site about this book written by L. Ron Hubbard about how you should live your life. I was pissed.
68. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Okay, first off im a dude, second I got ripped off by Yogi, thats why i keep asking.
69. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Scientology is probably the weirdest and most evil religion ever, I think I will protest.
70. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Csimmons: be gracious! Yogi has emailed me offering you his prize.
71. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
jfrater:SWEET! whats your e-mail adress?
72. kaylensmommy2006 - January 28th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Wow - this is some seriously scary sh*t! I am speechless.
73. dangorironhide - January 28th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Csimmons: heavybison never said you werent a guy. You are being a right asshole about this prize thing. Just accept that you didn’t win.
74. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
dangorironhide: I know I didn’t win, BUT FOR THE 1,000,000 TIME, HE OFFERED ME HIS PRIZE!
75. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
By the way, sorry for being a huge asshole about the whole prize thing, sorry Yogi for saying you screwed me over.
76. dangorironhide - January 28th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
I know he offered you it, but it seemed even with the list itself you were claiming you should get a consolation prize for staying on for 12 hours straight posting. That’s not prizeworthy, that’s just stupid.
77. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
dangorironhide: I said I recieved support, I didn’t want too get a consolation prize(too wimpy) but i recieved support.
78. MzFly - January 28th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
The more I research the Church of Scientology the more I am against everything they stand for. I have read a lot of firsthand accounts from previous members and they even have a hard time being objective about thier experiences years later. Seems like the most severe cases of brainwashing I have ever heard of. I mean, these people have been out of the clutches of CoS for over 5 yrs and they are still afraid to really be open and talk about it?
79. Kelsi - January 28th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
You know, with all this creepy, creepy, strange, unnatural, just….evil….crap, you have to wonder why anyone would join in the first place.
…
Anyone? Why?
80. tristan - January 28th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
What about the Catholic Church? The 2000 plus year reich is much worse than Scientology. Those tactics above and worse (such as oblation, the castrati, the inquisition). Also there has been a cover up by the drug companies concerning the fact that antidepression drugs can exacerbate suicidal ideation.
81. Cazz - January 28th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
jfrater - I’m definitely up for picketing London….. I was thinking of doing Brighton (but only as I know precisely where it is) but methinks London would make a greater impact. Is there information available for people wanting to locate their nearest ‘church’?
All I can say is that I’m glad I live in the UK where this kind of madness is still recognised as a ‘cult’ and not a religion. What does terrify me though is how many of these ‘churches’ are springing up all over the country……. there isn’t one in Bristol yet but I’m sure there will be soon :s
82. Borg - January 28th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
tristan: I’m not sure of your intentions, but I think you bring up a valid point. As far as religions go, if this is the worst that Scientology can conjure up then I’m not sure that it even begins to measure up to some of the darker histories of other religions. This is not to say I think Scientology is good or even justified, but I think it puts some perspective on things.
83. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Wow! 2 posts away from the front page of reddit. article here. If enough people vote we will hit the front page and give a little justice to the 5 people listed here that were murdered by the CoS.
84. Dana - January 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
But…but…Tom Cruise saved us from 9/11!
85. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Dana: I am certain he would like us to think so - just like Mayor Giuliani!
86. Nelia - January 28th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Haha, that southpark ep. was brilliant. I loved the end with all the suing talk. Fabulous. Then Scientologist Isaac Hayes left the show because they didn’t “respect religion.” This after being fine with an episode about the Catholic church being run by a giant spider, and a statue of the Virgin Mary bleeding from the backside… Double standard much?
I read all the comments because I was curious to see if anyone was supportive of Scientology. Apparently not, though if they are they probably wouldn’t want to post here anyway. Wouldn’t get a friendly reception
87. GO ANON GO - January 28th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
just here to lend my support to anonymous
88. jfrater - January 28th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Nelia: hehe - I think you are right about the reception they would get! This site is not well known for its tolerance of zany religions!
89. Drewbacca - January 28th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Wow I could absolutely understand thinking Scientology is a stupid quasi-religion but why all the hate? Sure there are a bunch of idiots in it but it has not affected my life in any way. I don’t see the problem is.
90. Sarah - January 28th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Scientology is still using fair game, just look at the deaths of Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake.
91. goof_ball - January 28th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Um… no offense, but who the h*ll cares about scientology?
92. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
jfrater: congrats on getting on reddit!
93. Mom424 - January 28th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
goof_ball; anyone with a conscience….
also they don’t pay taxes anywhere where they are still considered a church, so even if you’re a cold-hearted bastard, the pocket book hit should infuriate you….
94. Mom424 - January 28th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
jfrater; I’m impressed with your courage, it takes cojones to publicly take a stand against the dirty rotten scumbags…
Also be careful where you go for treatment for drug addiction,,,a friend of my kids was treated in the Toronto area, now he’s off the drugs but also off the family, the decent non-scumbag family. Trust me its no good trading one addiction for another,,and from what I’ve read Scientology is at least if not more harmful. In many of the deaths I’ve read about, the people seem to think if they just try harder to be more devout to cos, they will be able to cure themselves of say Manic Depression or Schizophrenia. No drug addicts I know are that self-deluded.
And cos does not deserve capitals…..
95. Mom424 - January 28th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
tristan; yes the roman catholics were awful, as were the protestants, as were the romans, as were the vikings…note WERE, not are! and the castrati is a very poor example, they were like rock stars and it was better than being a dirt-poor underfed peasant. And yes some anti-depressives have side-effects including increased risk of suicide…it says so on the bottle…does cos come with a warning?
You sir are either a fool or a scientologist…oops silly me, same thing
96. jeff - January 28th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
okay lets just face it scientologists are nothing but a bunch of corrupt brainwashed ignorant religious nutters, who feel free to do absolutely anything to better their church, they are completely and hundred percent egocentric, and they think they are doing good. but just because someone tries to do good doesnt mean they are, and doesnt it mean its not for self serving reasons, and christianity and catholicism are much larger scurges upon the world than scientology, some estimates range that christianity and catholicism has killed over 100 million people since its start, nazis killed 6 million, so we can see the perspective as to why ones allowed and one isnt, scientology however is new, and has only caused relatively few deaths, and comparatively few ruined families and lives, but at the same time christianity started out like that, will it take another 100 million before both of these scurges are gone from life, or is human life of no value? yes i believe in freedom, but not the freedom to take life and cause pain and misery to others as these groups so often and so frequently enjoy doing, especially to those who go seeking for help and treatment.
97. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
jfrater:did you get my e-mail? i saw your e-mail on previous comments, was i right?
98. mike - January 28th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
fuck scientology
99. Mom424 - January 28th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
jeff; organized religion, either Judaism or Christianity or whatever started eons ago, before we knew any better. It is an unfair comparison. Try comparing cos to any modern religion. Some similarities to Latter Day Saints and Jehova Witnesses and thats about it. Have you read anything about either of them? Even the Witness “Nutters” who don’t believe in whole blood transfusions believe in anti-psychotic meds,,,even if they cause the need of ‘em…
100. Harsha - January 28th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Firstly ppl stop calling it as a religion. Its not. Its an exaggerated cult. I would love to go and paste one of their “churches”, but the nearest one to me is a few thousand miles away. Maybe I’ll get my chance in september.
101. Csimmons - January 28th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
I would love to picket the CoS but I live in Kentucky and there isn’t one for MIIIILLLLLEEEEESSSSS!
102. riledupone - January 28th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Gawker has put up a copy of an email that may or may not be from Leah Remini, the actress from “King Of Queens”. She rants on in almost incomprehensible language, urging people to take more courses and advance. It sounds like a cos fundraiser. you can find it here:

103. Martin L - January 28th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
I was given to understand that Scientology is in fact the only religion ever to be started on a bet. It was a friendly wager back in the early 40s, so goes the tale, between L. Ron and another (better) science fiction writer, A. E. Van Vogt, in which L proposed that a religion could be founded which would make money. Something like ten years later, with the earliest successes of Scientology, Van Vogt conceded he’d lost, because Elron was already a millionaire. There are in fact a number of ideas in the Scientology mythos which sound like thefts of Van Vogt’s work, particularly the notion of Slans, a below-the-radar race of benevolent telepaths — sort of how followers of CoS view themselves, once they’ve reached the higher levels and are fighting that great psychic fight that is supposed to be the point of all those tests and seminars, and all those thousands of “clams” forked over. It’s all plagiarism, hypocrisy, and the most jaw-dropping cynical bullshit … and it’s a damn sight stranger than fiction, ain’t it?
104. JwJwBean - January 28th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
It is funny how now Scientology gets all this publicity. I remember as a child never even hearing of Scientology, but I remember a commercial for L. Ron Hubbard’s book Dianetics being all over the t.v. I do not remember it ever mentioning being part of a religion or trying to get anyone to join the CoS. I do remember it saying quotes from people about the book. Like, “One of the most gripping stories of our time. Extremely moving…” I thought it was just a fiction story book.
105. xasshern - January 28th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
i just have to say “thank you listverse!” for taking a stand against the evil cult of homocidal, self-loving, delusional, goat-fucking lunatics that make up the “church” of scientology. i am very much for free speech and freedom of religion, but this is almost worse than an organized crime syndicate and must be stopped at all costs. if there was ever a time for super heroes it is now because the “church” of scientology is nothing but a group of super-villians bent or world domination and controlling other people. they represent everything wrong with organized religion in any of its forms. they are based off of true fiction and in all their blind rediculousness resemble a ficticious organization, but are sadly all too real. i’ll put it to you this way; they make me proud that i live in the south were the southern baptist dominate everything, and any in the region know that THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING. and i goddamn dare this pack of movie-star assholes (not actual actors but “movie-stars”) to do fuck about shit against me or anyone that opposes them or their warped scemes. i see them…ALL OF THEM, as a cancerous growth that must be amputated from the world so that its evil cannot spread and contaminate the rest of the world. fuck al-quida, Scientology in all its forms is a clear and present danger against human rights int he United States of America and around the globe. the 10th of February I’ll be burning an effigy of Tom Cruise along with copies of dianetics and vhs copies of top gun. i might even dress up as Guy Fawkes and do something really shitty…who knows. No, i think i’ll dress as Lestat from the Anne Rice novels and raise some hell for what Tom Cruise has done to that character. Might i point out how shitty that is that you can ruin the reputation of a completely evil and fictional vampire by the organization you have sold your soul to? Christ on his throne! I’m calling for a 3 way cage match between Tom Cruise, Mit Romney and John Hegee to decide Whose cult is more fucked up. and i’ll run in there towards the end dressed ass Lestat with a titanium folding chair chair and wreck some lives by God! now, who the hell is with me? FOR PEACE, FOR SANITY, FOR HUMANITY, FUCK SCIENTOLOGY!!!

109. Darx - January 28th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I’ve heard on a couple occasions that Hubbard once gave an interview or wrote an article (or something) in which he said that a really great way to get rich would be to invent a religion…and then he did and no one seemed to notice.
Does anyone know if that’s actually true or if that’s just a story that makes Hubbard sound more like an evil genius than he deserves credit for?
110. JwJwBean - January 28th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Very interesting. I went to check snopes. I had heard a similar rumor. There is nothing on L. Ron Hubbard or Scientology over at snopes according to their search. I am sure there have been tons of rumors or accusations about CoS just dying to be investigated by snopes. Yet none exist. Hmmmmm.
111. JwJwBean - January 28th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Time even wrote an article about CoS. I didn’t read the whole article, I am too tired right now. Here it is though.

112. yong23 - January 29th, 2008 at 12:49 am
Just wondering…. with all the readers on listverse, I would imagine at least one or so CoS members having come across this site…and yet, no one has come forth and defended their “great” L.Ron? I guess it’s not their style…
113. jfrater - January 29th, 2008 at 1:11 am
yong23: I have noticed their conspicuous absence on the other lists as well - however there is one Scientologist that did post on an early list - he is the author of a book about the cult.
114. Drogo - January 29th, 2008 at 1:52 am
Of course CoS is against psychiatry, they know their followers need mental help, and don’t want them to “wake up” to reality. What would happen to a member if it seemed that they had become a threat to Scientology. Should any accidental deaths be investigated?
115. jrjb - January 29th, 2008 at 1:59 am
ProgRapture and Dan Ohh: I agree.
A “church” that uses lawsuits lawsuits lawsuits and retaliation tatics - can anything be more creepy? Oh yeah the Westborough Church comes to mind close those same tactics. Fred Phelps and Tom Cruise two nuts of different colors!!!!!!
As I stated on post on the earlier list about COS - Saw Kirstie Alley defend the tactics on some TV show years ago and was both disgusted and creeped out.
Cults and death seem to go hand in hand (i.e. Jim Jones)
116. g. Anton - January 29th, 2008 at 4:27 am
I think that the concepts of ‘Anonymous’ are great! With all the goverment illegal spying and FBI/NSA snooping, the only guarantee we have of freedom of speech ia anonymity! Buy a laptop with cash, only use other peoples wireless connections to the internet, never, never pass it through customs or an airport, and don’t enter any traceable personal data into the machine. If you can move to Mexico or some other free country before doing the above, so much the better.
117. dastex - January 29th, 2008 at 6:39 am
Sure scientology is weird and out there. They may even be resposnsible for some deaths but they are no different from other more mainstream religions as far as rejecting science and beleieving in God’s ability to cure a disease.
Take 7 day adventists they do not allow blood transfusions. How many of their members have died or nearly died because of this little prohibition. Another case in point are the pro-lifers. Thought we had safely removed the back street abortion as a chooce of last resort…think again. More women die in childbirth every year than in all of the conflicts around the world combined.
118. Mystern - January 29th, 2008 at 6:42 am
Dastex: It’s Jehovahs Witnesses who do not allow blood transfusions, not 7th Day Adventists.
119. SlickWilly - January 29th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Diogenes:
There is a well known story about Elvis checking out scientology. He got out of the limo,. went in the building, and came out about ten minutes later, saying, “Fuck those bastards. All they want is my god-damned money.” Or something very similar to that (swears included). No, Elvis was not a scientologist, because he had the brains to see through their little scheme from the get-go. I can’t say the same for his daughter, Lisa-Marie. Last I heard, she was a practicing scientologist.
120. netizen - January 29th, 2008 at 8:16 am
Hell yeah, this isn’t a moment too soon!
And shut up with all the scientology apologetics, they aren NOT an religion, they are a criminal mpyramid scheme dressed up as a religion. Hence, all comparisons between the “Church” of Scientology and actual religions are invalid. I know that I’m breaking Godwin’s law, but nazis are the only close comparison we have at modern times.
If you read some of the ex-scientologists stories, you’ll realize that they are probably one of the most insidious and dangerous institutions on the earth right now and THEY MUST BE STOPPED! I can only commend Anonymous for getting more people aware of this, and hopefully the demonstrations will have a huge turnout and their bogus tax exemptions removed. As soon as enough people are screaming for justice, the ex-scientologists that are keeping quiet will step forward and bring an end to the madness. Godspeed, internet.

122. Randall - January 29th, 2008 at 8:24 am
jfrater, I don’t know if you wrote this list or if it was someone else here, but I gotta tell you—good for you. One of the things that got me loving List Universe in the first place was its consistent criticism of Scientology.
A “religion” invented by a fourth-rate sci-fi writer, whose motivation was to scam people out of money. And for proof that it is only the most moronic, dull-witted and servile of people who buy into the lie of Scientology–it’s most vocal proponents are ACTORS. And, as we know—there is no other subset of humanity on earth as dumb and gullible (and whor-ish) as ACTORS.
123. jfrater - January 29th, 2008 at 8:34 am
Randall: I did write it - unless a list specifically names a contributor, I have written it
124. Thorne Smith - January 29th, 2008 at 8:37 am
Well done! Scientology is the Amway of religions. And the only reason they call themselves a religion is to benefit from the tax exempt status.
I urge those of you interested to not only check out http://www.xenu.net, but also Mark Bunker’s site: http://www.xenutv.com. Both very, very interesting and enlightening sites. Be sure to check out xenutv’s 1999 trip to Clearwater on youtube. Bizarre and scary.
I also support anonymous. Sadly, you have to fight fire with fire in some cases. They’ve taken to highlighting Mark Bunker’s suggestion to write your congressmen & women to revoke the CO$’s tax-exempt status. Now that would be a massive shot to the cajones!
125. netizen - January 29th, 2008 at 9:23 am
If you decide to join the pickets, make sure to be peaceful. Watch xenutv1’s movies on youtube, it shows what kind of reaction the scientologists will meet you with. Do NOT argue with them and do NOT lose your temper, because they are trained at verbally abuse SP’s.
126. Mom424 - January 29th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Any lawyers among our esteemed members? Why is it that Europe has been successful in banning cos for its false claims and obvious profiteering? and not here in North America?
127. Randall - January 29th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Mom424:
Come on, Mom… there’s a little thing here called the Constitution of the United States of America. Guarantees protection of our civil liberties. Freedom of Religion and all that. We’re, as a people, very touchy about horning in on that document’s stated rules. In fact, since it was written, we’ve expanded on the thing, not curtailed it.
It’s not that European countries don’t have their own constitutions and laws guaranteeing these freedoms—they just don’t have the iron-clad *tradition* that we have (in a legal sense) of always being on the side of the Idea of the Individual Right over those trying to limit that Right. Which is not to say that we don’t f**k with the document now and then–Bush has done a number on it, we sure know that. But in general our legal system prefers to err, consistently, on the side of the document. It’s our one overall, agreed-upon standard for our society–The Constitution–and while lawyers and judges and pols are happy to bend the Con to the breaking point—they’re generally loathe to violate it.
I don’t like it anymore than anyone else here–but Scientology is currently viewed as a religion (gag) and is therefore protected. We’d need some extreme heaps of evidence to prove it was criminal…. and to my knowledge (unless I’m mistaken) this has never been done with any relatively large, known religion in our history.
128. bucslim - January 29th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Methinks anything I can think (again methinks) of can be turned into a religion if I’m kooky enough. Anything from the Hale Boppers to Borat saying he follows the hawk.
That’s how a lot of this stuff gets started. Joe Smith looked into a bag of rocks to interpret the golden tablets he found, but no one can find now. Jehovah’s Witnesses think only a certain number of people go to heaven, which explains why their church membership is more than that number. Oral Roberts demanded his followers to raise money or he’d die. L Ron makes a nice bookend to these dorks.
But then what is orthodox? I mean, just about anything you pick is going to be dead-wrong-one-way-ticket-to-satan’s-barbeque in someone else’s mind.
It’s true we all have a right to worship how we please in this country, and it’s my right to ridicule it mercilessly.
129. Mom424 - January 29th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Randall; cos is not large, except monetarily. Of course I know about the American constitution. Probably better ‘n’ most Americans. cos is not a religion, but a cult. I believe there is a lack of political will in both our countries on this issue. Note that Warren Jeffs got his ass convicted, and he didn’t kill anyone. (at least not in this particular instance)I guess polygamy/child abuse is a bigger issue than death.
130. Randall - January 29th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Mom:
Well I agree totally that Scientology is a cult, not a religion–but my point is, one would have to present a *mountain* of evidence to support this. The law doesn’t move lightly against established religions, no matter what we personally think of them.
And you say Scientology is not large–I beg to differ. While the actual number of practicing, “recognized” members isn’t that large (I’ve seen estimates for 25,000 - 100,000 people) there are a lot of followers and fellow-travelers boosting the numbers perhaps into the 2 or 3 million mark. (I myself have a friend whose dingbat sister is a Scientology nut… he disavows her of course–but whether you’d call people like her–or she’d call herself–an actual “scientologist” is questionable, but whatever she is, you have to grant she’s far from alone). Even at that low end of the numbers, several tens of thousands of Scientology “members” is still a hell of a big number, and makes for a big difference between Scientology and a cult like Warren Jeffs’. I mean, we could say all these things about the Moonies, too, and they haven’t been outlawed.
My point is…. well, you’re right–there’s a lack of political will about this. But the Constitution is what helps to enervate that will; we aren’t keen on the general idea of interfering in religions, no matter how whacky they are, unless we’re presented with solid evidence that they’re breaking the law… and moreover, with Scientology we’re not dealing with some penny-ante cult like Jeffs’ or the Branch Davidians… it’s always easier to go after the little handful-sized groups than corporate-sized cults. There’s a lot of attendant dangerous precedent that could be created here too, which could end up threatening what we think of as the “legitimate” religions. Hence my point about the Constitution and why the legal system isn’t hyped up about going after the COS.

132. Emmaintheuk - January 30th, 2008 at 1:14 am
I was stopped in the street when I was 18 (I’m now 33) by someone with a clipboard in Brighton. They claimed it was for some type of research that they wanted to do some personality tests. I asked if it was for some local university or something and they sort of went along with that. I was at a bit of a loose end so I went along. The room was pretty full of all sorts of people, old, young, male and female. I was in there for about an hour and a half and was asked to wait while they looked over the results. By this time I was getting bored and various people were thanked and told they could leave. There was about 5 people left, but by this time two hours had gone by and I was bored beyond belief so I left. They tried to stop me going saying that they had some interesting results for me but I left anyway. It was until a couple of years ago that I saw the word Dianetics again and associated it with CoS. All I can think is that I was a bit depressed and aimless at the time, which was no doubt the reason they wanted me to stay. I’m glad I didn’t stay but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been so easy to brainwash even at that time.

Emmaintheuk;
i know this has mentioned to already on this site, but your experience really sounds like the Southpark episode!
I guess that’s their tactic… sort of like when someone comes to you and says, “Hey, have I got a great job opportunity for you!” Then they tell you to come to one of their meetings… and you find out that it was Amway, or some other pyramid scheme… (sorry, for any Amway participants that I might have offended, but you know it’s true!)
135. shaunism - January 30th, 2008 at 2:47 am
This is not meant as any sort of fanning of the flames or anything, but a general question/thought: when does a ‘cult’ become a bonafide ‘religion’? I have no doubt Mormonism would be considered a cult now if it weren’t so well established. And as Christianity must’ve been to the Romans. So when will Scientology make the leap?
136. jfrater - January 30th, 2008 at 3:10 am
shaunism: I think that most people consider that Scientology is a cult - it is banned in Germany for that reason. I also consider Mormonism to be a cult - along with JWs and SDAs.
137. Icecycle - January 30th, 2008 at 3:51 am
To add to this and a very real warning.
These people believe that Niacin can be used (for what? stopping drug abuse? depression?) in massive ongoing doses.
It will eventually kill you.
good site
(hidden scientologist in above link)
mentions liver toxicity, not something you want to find out about (from your doctor.)
So, having read all of Ron’s screed (back in the 60s, I am really old.) I would say that the fruitloop pharmacopoeia is the most dangerous of all.
138. Megan - January 30th, 2008 at 4:16 am

Mystern; Don’t tell anyone,(especially Jamie), but I’m pretty sure I ripped that line directly out of a Stephen King novel… The Stand
There really is nothing new under the sun.
147. Mystern - January 30th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Mom424: Stephen King? Shudders. Never really was a fan.
148. Mom424 - January 30th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Mystern; some I like, some I don’t. Depends on the story, and whether he gets to the point! His novella’s/short stories are often way better than his novels. Try Apt Pupil, gave me the willies.
(yes they made a craptastic movie out of it) but the story truly horrifies.

Hm. I’ll have to check it out.
150. IDontTrustcosWithMyName - January 30th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Someone commented on the lack of scientology supporters commenting on these threads. It’s my understanding that scientologists are not allowed to access the internet, save for a small group who are allowed to access the internet solely to find scientology critics and then flood the ‘offending’ website with pro-scientology statements (or to discredit the authors)
151. jfrater - January 30th, 2008 at 11:30 am
IDontTrustcosWithMyName: I think I have heard that as well
152. albert0 - January 30th, 2008 at 11:36 am
really? Im not suprised then. Why would anyone want to be scientologit?
153. Devon - January 30th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Well I agree COS is nutty as all heck but I think we are avoiding the obvious and that is that Islam is the most brutal murderous cult alive today!
Consider that Islam was founded by a man that had innocent people murdered and married a 6 year old girl and advocated beating of unsubmissive wives and looting and stealing…well…I don’t think you can beat Islam in terms of savagery…a savegery that is now occuring in the West…and a savagery that has been ongoing for 1400 years!!
At least the COS is relatively small and young…and now is so ridiculed that no one takes it seriously…Islam on the other hand has hundred’s of millions of fanatics who support incredible evil…..
Granted, if one were to speak out publicly about Islam, they will have to spend the rest of their lives in hiding…
And I don’t think that even the COS has a death sentence for those that leave Scientology…Islam teaches the murder of those that leave Islam…
Again…nothing touches Islam for pure barbarity…only Marxism and Nazism can probably surpass it…
154. Mom424 - January 30th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Devon; I don’t know how many Islamic people you know, but the ones I know are peace loving and extremely tolerant. And yes Islam has some horrific practices (mostly not of the Koran but from other prophets?), but have you read the Old Testament lately? full of smiting and stoning and boiling. The problem is not Islam, but with the hi -jacking of it for perceived political gain.
155. Molotov - January 30th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Devon-
Why do you refer to Islam as a “cult”?
I really think you should investigate a bit more about the faith before you dismiss it. If you’re interested in educating yourself, you may want to learn about Fatima (Mohammed’s daughter), the five pillars and the Qur’an. Yes it is violent, but as Mom424 suggested so is the Old Testament.
And, if you have the opportunity, please read they Infancy Gospel of Thomas about what Jesus was like as a boy. It may shock you.
You don’t have to agree with it, but to declare all Muslims “barbarian” appears, quite frankly, rather ignorant and doesn’t look well for you. It would imply that perhaps you’ve been lapping up the American hate-mongering propaganda. And that couldn’t be it, could it?
156. jfrater - January 30th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Molotov: while I agree with your sentiments completely - I do not agree about the Gospel of Thomas - it was written by a breakaway sect in the 4th century and is a work of fiction.

scientology is a same bs as cristianity or any other religion. So sci has provoked a couple of deaths? well cristianity has provoked millions upon millions

I willbe attending the rally on Feb.10th in Chicago. Can’t wait to see how the react.
159. Maxx_the_Slash - January 31st, 2008 at 1:29 am
I wonder why Scientologists goes through the trouble of calling their practice a “religion”. We all know it’s a cult. A religion is a religion because it has a diety of worship, which Scientology seems to be lacking. oh, it has an “anti-Christ” figure in Xenu, but no God to worship. And L. Ron Hubbard founded the religion, but he has no Godly powers, so he doesn’t count.

160. stormy617 - January 31st, 2008 at 1:40 am
Wow I have always known that CoS was a really wacky *religion* but I never knew quite how bad it really was.
I too remember the commercials for L. Ron’s book, from when I was younger. I think we even had a copy of it in the house as my mother buys a lot of books but I never read it.

Do one on the LDS church next, please!
162. ddw - January 31st, 2008 at 11:00 pm
I use to be LDS so ask away. I will tell you what I know. I was a member for about 10 years..temple going and all.
163. ddw - January 31st, 2008 at 11:04 pm
I must say that it has taken me years to get over the guilt of leaving the church. ‘What if’ keeps creeping up in my mind I look back however and see too many inconsistencies in what they teach. IF it was all run by true devine intervention then why have things changed. For example; when I got divorced (there is s story) HE could keep his temple recommend but I couldn’t. I was no longer allowed to go to the temple. “I” was bad. I, however, did nothing that I should loose my recommend (pass to enter the temple). NOw however they say a divorced woman can enter. Its ok. The men really do rule in that church and woman are second class citizens.

Sarah and ddw: You guys are gonna love the list I sent Jamie. It will be the first list on the site dealing exclusively with the LDS church.
165. ddw - February 1st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Sweet. So where do we find this list?

169. J. Coustark. - March 20th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
#169 I think you have a major problem that needs looking into.
Perhaps you should have a quite talk with your mother and father and explain to them your need to post this type of rubbish, you are not impressing anyone with your capital letters and filthy language.
If this is the best way you can find to express an opinion I feel very sorry for you. You should use some of that money you talk about and sign yourself into a medical instituation where they may be able to help you.
Bye the way, I am in no way connected to Scientology nor have I any wish to.

Devon…
wow. I can’t believe you would post something like that. True that Islam does have its fair share of cruelties but that does not make it a cult, every religion has had its fair share! the Catholics had the Spanish Inquisition (I’m Catholic and I’m not proud of this but it happened) and the Protestants burned innocent women who they thought were witches, for two examples. yet the Catholics and Protestants of today are NOT responsible for these crimes. You cannot vilify an entire group because of the mistakes of some. The Muslims in the region where I live advocate peace and respect, and are not the cultists you seem to think they are. I really hope it wasn’t any hate-mongering that led you to your misguided opinions. It’s things like that which are always going to keep us from true mutual understanding and peace.
