10 Human Remains with Stories Straight from a Dark Novel

Dark fiction is filled with warrior princesses, violent encounters with beasts, gruesome executions, and bodies that refuse to surrender their secrets. Archaeology shows that history can produce stories every bit as unsettling.

These remains include a prehistoric shark-attack victim, infants buried in a disused latrine, a religious ascetic encircled by iron, and one “skeleton” assembled from people who died thousands of years apart.

Some interpretations remain debated, but every discovery offers a story strange enough to have escaped from a dark novel.

More than 3,000 years ago, a man encountered a shark in or near Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. Whether he was fishing, hunting the animal, or simply unlucky remains unknown. Whatever brought them together, the meeting ended in one of prehistory’s most gruesome deaths.

Researchers identified the attack while examining a skeleton known as Tsukumo No. 24, excavated from a Jōmon-period cemetery in the early 20th century. The man’s right leg and left hand were missing, while his surviving left leg had been placed across his body for burial. Hundreds of cuts, punctures, gouges, and fractures covered much of the remaining skeleton.

In 2021, researchers mapped at least 790 injuries onto a 3D model. Their distribution indicated that the man was probably alive during the attack rather than scavenged after death. The wounds also suggested that he attempted to defend himself before suffering catastrophic blood loss. A shark-attack specialist helped narrow the likely culprit to either a tiger shark or a white shark.

The damage would have been fatal, but most of the man’s body was apparently recovered shortly after the attack and buried by his community. His remains now provide the earliest directly documented evidence of a shark attacking a human—along with a disturbing glimpse of what his companions must have pulled from the water.[1]

9 Death by Wheel

In 2019, researchers described the remains of a young man excavated from a medieval cemetery near Milan’s Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio. He died between approximately 1290 and 1430, when he was between 17 and 20 years old. Although his precise fate remains uncertain, his injuries suggest that he endured one of medieval Europe’s most brutal punishments: execution on the wheel.

The Catherine wheel, also known as the breaking wheel, was used to torture and execute people convicted of serious crimes. In one version of the punishment, the condemned person was stretched on the ground while an executioner shattered the arms and legs with a club, iron bar, or wheel. They could then weave the broken limbs through the spokes of a large wooden wheel.

The wheel and its victim might be raised for public display, leaving the condemned person to die from trauma, exposure, or dehydration. Sometimes a final blow ended the suffering. The exact procedure varied by place, period, and sentence, but its purpose remained chillingly consistent: to prolong both pain and public humiliation.

The Milan skeleton had symmetrical fractures in the forearms and lower legs, matching the pattern expected when an executioner systematically broke the limbs. Damage to the occipital bone at the back of the skull also suggested decapitation. Taken together, the injuries led researchers to identify the remains as a probable wheel execution and one of the first osteological examples of that punishment recognized in Italy.[2]

8 The Possible Twins Buried in a Latrine

In 2010, archaeologists working at Ephesus, in present-day Turkey, discovered a small stone-and-brick grave in an unexpected location: the channel of an abandoned Roman public latrine. The latrine had once served the Odeion, a performance building within the former sacred precinct of Artemis. By the time the burial occurred in the eighth or ninth century, however, the toilet had been out of use for hundreds of years.

Inside the carefully constructed grave lay two infants placed side by side with their heads facing west. Both had reached approximately 33 or 34 weeks of gestation and died shortly before, during, or soon after birth. Their nearly identical developmental ages and body sizes, along with their shared grave, suggest that they may have been twins, although genetic testing has not confirmed the relationship.

One infant also had a rare supernumerary cervical rib—an extra rib in the neck region. Such ribs have been associated with developmental disorders and poor perinatal outcomes, but researchers could not determine whether the abnormality contributed to the child’s death.

The grave’s location initially invited grim comparisons with ancient sites where infants appear to have been discarded in sewers. But the Ephesus burial tells a different story. The children were probably wrapped in shrouds, carefully positioned, and enclosed in a protected grave that followed several Christian burial customs. Rather than being thrown away, they appear to have received a thoughtful farewell in the safest resting place their mourners could provide.[3]

7 The Woman Buried in Ascetic Chains

At Khirbat el-Masani, a Byzantine monastic complex near Jerusalem, archaeologists uncovered two burial crypts beneath a church. One held the remains of a person surrounded by dozens of heavy iron rings. Some encircled the neck, arms, and legs, while iron plates lay across the torso.

The arrangement might resemble a prisoner buried in restraints, but the grave’s prominent position pointed toward a different explanation. During the Byzantine period, some Christian ascetics voluntarily wore chains and iron rings as a form of bodily mortification. By rejecting physical comfort and enduring constant pain, they believed they could discipline the body and elevate the soul.

The skeleton was too poorly preserved for researchers to determine its sex through conventional examination. Most scholars initially assumed that it belonged to a monk because extreme chain-wearing had been associated primarily with men. A 2025 study, however, analyzed proteins preserved in the enamel of a surviving tooth. The results identified the individual as very probably female.

The discovery provides rare physical evidence that women also practiced this punishing form of asceticism. Whether the woman lived openly as a female ascetic or adopted a male monastic identity cannot be determined. Either way, her honored burial suggests that the community viewed those crushing rings not as instruments of captivity but as signs of extraordinary devotion.[4]

6 Unknown Skeletons Became Bejeweled “Catacomb Saints”

In 1566, a wave of Protestant iconoclasm known as the Beeldenstorm, or “image storm,” swept through parts of Europe. Crowds stripped churches of statues, paintings, relics, and other objects they considered idolatrous. Catholic communities that lost their treasured relics soon found replacements in one of history’s most macabre religious movements.

After Roman catacombs were rediscovered in 1578, human remains were removed from their tombs and identified as those of early Christian martyrs. Church officials relied on inscriptions, symbols, and objects found near the bodies, but many of these supposed signs of martyrdom were ambiguous. A letter M, for example, might be interpreted as an abbreviation for “martyr” even though it had several other possible meanings.

Because the deceased were usually anonymous, they received new devotional names and official authentication papers before being sent to Catholic churches, especially in German-speaking Europe. Those documents confirmed the Church’s approval and the relics’ provenance, but they could not establish the dead person’s identity—or prove by modern historical standards that the individual had died for the Christian faith.

Nuns, monks, and skilled artisans wrapped the bones in fine fabrics, reconstructed the skeletons, and covered them with gold, silver, embroidery, and jewels. The resulting “catacomb saints” became dazzling symbols of resurrection and Catholic identity during the Counter-Reformation. Their popularity declined in later centuries, and many were hidden or dismantled. Yet some remain in European churches today, where the anonymous dead have become local celebrities—even if nobody knows who they were in life.[5]

During excavations at Dahshur in the 1890s, French archaeologist Jacques de Morgan recovered the remains of several members of ancient Egypt’s royal court. They included King Hor, the princesses Noub-Hotep, Ita, Khenmet, and Itaweret, and an unidentified woman. After their remains entered the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, staff placed them together in storage and largely forgot them.

Researchers rediscovered the bones in 2020 and subjected them to a new bioarchaeological examination. The royal women were buried with objects including bows, arrows, daggers, and maces. Earlier Egyptologists generally regarded those weapons as ceremonial grave goods rather than equipment the women had used.

X-rays and physical examination revealed pronounced muscle-attachment sites, particularly on the women’s upper limbs. The researchers interpreted those changes as evidence of repeated, strenuous activity resembling the movements involved in archery, hunting, or weapon handling. Noub-Hotep and Itaweret displayed features the team associated with archery, while Ita’s powerful upper-body muscles could have developed through regular use of a mace or dagger. Itaweret had also survived broken ribs and foot fractures.

Bones cannot reveal a person’s exercise routine with certainty, however. Other specialists have cautioned that muscle-attachment sites can be shaped by age, genetics, body size, and numerous physical activities. The study also lacked a large comparison group. The princesses may have trained with the weapons buried beside them, but their remains do not prove that they fought in battle. Even so, these women were probably far more physically active than the decorative palace figures early archaeologists imagined.[6]

4 Living Yeasts Are Growing on Ötzi

In 1991, hikers in the Ötztal Alps encountered a corpse melting out of the ice. This was no recent mountaineering tragedy. The man died about 5,300 years earlier, and the glacier naturally preserved his body, clothing, tattoos, equipment, and final meal. An arrowhead lodged in his shoulder showed that his death had probably been anything but peaceful.

Ötzi has continued to produce surprises ever since. In 2026, researchers published the most extensive survey yet of the microorganisms associated with his body. They examined microbes from his internal tissues, skin, body water, original resting place, and modern conservation environment.

The results revealed three overlapping microbial worlds. Damaged DNA inside Ötzi’s intestines preserved traces of bacteria that may have belonged to his original gut microbiome. Other organisms colonized the body after death while it lay in the glacier. Still more arrived after its recovery, including bacteria introduced through water sprayed inside the conservation chamber.

The living stars of the study were four cold-adapted yeasts: Glaciozyma watsonii, Mrakia robertii, Phenoliferia glacialis, and a species of Goffeauzyma. Scientists cultured all four in the laboratory, proving that viable cells remained on or inside the mummy. Comparisons of samples collected in 2010 and 2019 also suggested that Glaciozyma had been actively proliferating. The yeasts are not survivors from Ötzi’s living microbiome; they are environmental colonizers thriving on a 5,300-year-old body stored at approximately 21°F (−6°C). Their continued growth makes Ötzi not merely a frozen relic but a changing ecosystem—and a potential feast that conservators must prevent the microbes from finishing.[7]

3 A Trebuchet May Have Shattered Him

Was Skeleton 150 the First Confirmed Trebuchet Death?

In 1997, archaeologists discovered eight skeletons beneath the royal chapel at Stirling Castle in Scotland. Several bore injuries consistent with medieval violence, but one young man—known only as Skeleton 150—had suffered damage on an entirely different scale.

A modern examination using microscopy, radiography, micro-CT scanning, and 3D imaging identified 167 fractures. Sixty-one affected the skull, while another 57 broke the ribs. The pattern suggested that a single high-velocity impact struck the back of the man’s head and right shoulder while he stood upright with his arms bent in front of him. The force then drove him violently to the ground.

The injuries resembled those produced by a modern high-speed collision. But Skeleton 150 died around the beginning of the 14th century, long before trains or automobiles could pulverize a person. Researchers concluded that a large projectile from a siege engine offered one possible explanation. Falling masonry might also have crushed him, although it would probably not have produced the same concentrated high-velocity trauma.

The proposed date places the death near Edward I of England’s 1304 siege of Stirling Castle. Edward bombarded the fortress with several siege engines, including the enormous trebuchet known as the Warwolf. No evidence can establish that the Warwolf—or even a trebuchet—killed this particular man. Researchers presented the findings at a 2026 paleopathology conference, and they await full peer-reviewed publication. Still, if the interpretation proves correct, Skeleton 150 could preserve the earliest archaeological evidence of someone struck directly by a trebuchet projectile.[8]

2 The Tattooed Toddlers of Nubia

Tattoos rarely survive on ancient human remains, and facial tattoos are rarer still. That made the results of a large investigation into naturally mummified bodies from ancient Nubia especially remarkable. Researchers examined 1,048 individuals from four cemeteries in present-day Sudan, covering approximately 1,700 years of Nubian history.

Multispectral imaging revealed definite tattoos on 17 people and probable examples on another six. The largest concentration appeared at two Christian-period cemeteries at Kulubnarti, which were used between approximately AD 650 and 1000. At least 19% of the examined individuals there had tattoos, although skin loss and deterioration mean the original proportion may have been higher.

Most of the designs appeared on the eyebrows, cheeks, forehead, or temples. More surprising was the age of the tattooed individuals. Many were children younger than 11, and the youngest definite case was approximately 18 months old. A still younger infant may also have been tattooed, but the marks were not preserved clearly enough for a firm identification. One three-year-old girl had received a new facial tattoo over an older design, showing that some children were tattooed more than once.

Why Nubian communities marked such young children remains unknown. Tattooing became more widespread across ages and sexes after Christianity reached the region, and some four-dot diamond designs may have represented crosses. Yet the marks could also have expressed community identity or served protective or medicinal purposes, particularly in a population frequently exposed to malaria and other illnesses. Whatever their meaning, these tiny mummies show that tattoos could form part of a person’s identity almost from infancy.[9]

1 A Skeleton Made from at Least Eight People

During the 1970s, archaeologists excavated an ancient cemetery at Pommerœul, Belgium. Seventy-six of its graves contained cremated remains consistent with Gallo-Roman burial practices. One grave, however, held a complete skeleton arranged on its back. Researchers naturally assumed that this person had also lived during the Roman period.

The first sign of trouble appeared in the spine. Some vertebrae looked as though they belonged to an adolescent, while others came from an adult. Radiocarbon dating then produced an even stranger result: different bones came from people who had died during separate phases of the Neolithic period.

Genetic and skeletal analyses eventually showed that the body incorporated bones from at least eight individuals. Most were several thousand years older than the cemetery surrounding them. Yet the skull belonged to a woman who lived during the third or fourth century AD, firmly within the Roman era. Someone had carefully arranged ancient bones into the form of one articulated person and completed the body with a much newer head.

Who assembled this composite skeleton remains a mystery. A Neolithic community may have created the original body from remains gathered from a collective burial, after which Roman-period people discovered it and supplied a missing or damaged skull. Alternatively, the Romans may have collected the ancient bones and constructed the entire figure themselves. Either way, they buried the assembled ancestor among their own dead, leaving behind a person who had never lived—but whose body spanned thousands of years.[10]
