WARNING: This article contains graphic photographs of dead bodies. In recent decades many groups have released photos of famous leaders to prove that they are indeed dead. This list includes some of those as well as famous celebrity photos. This list is not for the faint of heart. Click images for a larger view.
1. Marilyn Monroe
Monroe was found dead by her housekeeper on August 5, 1962. Her death was ruled as an overdose of sleeping pills. Questions remain about the circumstances and timeline of housekeeper Eunice Murray’s discovery of Monroe’s body. Also, some conspiracy theories involve John and Robert Kennedy. The official cause of her death was “probable suicide”.
2. John F Kennedy
President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas at 12:30pm Central Standard Time on November 22, 1963, while on a political trip through Texas. He was pronounced dead at 1:00pm. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested, in a theatre about 80 minutes after the assassination and was charged by Dallas police for the murder of Dallas policeman J.D. Tippit, before eventually being charged for the murder of Kennedy.
3. Pol Pot
On the night of April 15, 1998 the Voice of America, of which Pol Pot was a devoted listener, announced that the Khmer Rouge had agreed to turn him over to an international tribunal. According to his wife, he died in his bed later in the night while waiting to be moved to another location. Ta Mok claimed that his death was due to heart failure.
4. Che Guevara
After capture in Bolivia, Guevara was taken to a dilapidated schoolhouse in the nearby village of La Higuera where he was held overnight. Early the next afternoon he was executed. The executioner was Mario Terán, a Sergeant in the Bolivian army who had drawn a short straw after arguments over who got the honour of killing Guevara broke out among the soldiers.
5. Benito Mussolini
On 28 April, Mussolini and his mistress were both shot, along with most of the members of their fifteen-man train, primarily ministers and officials of the Italian Social Republic. The shootings took place in the small village of Giulino di Mezzegra.
6. Nicolae Ceausescu
On December 25, Ceausescu and his wife were condemned to death by a military court on charges ranging from illegal gathering of wealth to genocide, and were executed in Târgovişte, Romania. Before they were shot dead, Ceauşescu sang part of “The Internationale” and proclaimed that history would judge him well. His wife was screaming at everyone to go to hell.
7. Mao Tse-Tung
Mao Tse-Tung was a Chinese military and political leader, who led the Communist Party of China (CPC) to victory against the Kuomintang (KMT) in the Chinese Civil War, and was the leader of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. Under his leadership, China suffered the Cultural Revolution, a struggle for power within the Communist Party that manifested into wide-scale social, political, and economic chaos, which grew to include large sections of Chinese society and eventually brought the entire country to the brink of civil war. There are estimates of up to 500,000 deaths as a result of Mao’s policies.
8. Saddam Hussein
Saddam was hanged on the first day of Eid ul-Adha, December 30, 2006, despite his wish to be shot (which he felt would be more dignified). The execution was carried out at “Camp Justice,” an Iraqi army base in Kadhimiya, a neighborhood of northeast Baghdad. The execution was videotaped on a mobile phone, showing Saddam being taunted before his hanging. The video was leaked to electronic media, becoming the subject of global controversy.
9. Vladimir Lenin
Lenin died on January 21, 1924, aged 53. Rumors of Lenin having syphilis sprang up shortly after his death. The official cause given for Lenin’s death was cerebral arteriosclerosis, or a fourth stroke. But out of the 27 physicians who treated him, only eight signed onto that conclusion in his autopsy report. Therefore, several other theories regarding his death have been put forward.
10. Hermann Goering
Goering (second in charge of Nazi Germany) was found guilty on four counts raised against him: of conspiracy to wage war, crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity. No mitigating circumstances were found and he was sentenced to death by hanging. He asked to be executed by firing squad - the request was refused. On 15th October 1946, two hours before his execution was due to take place, Goering committed suicide in his Nuremberg cell, taking a capsule of poison that he had succeeded in hiding during his imprisonment.

Joe: While he was hanging up (dead) his body was attacked and defiled by the public who hated him. That photo is actually upside down - it was taken when he was hanging from his feet.

Well, as for Hitler, i personally believe that he did not commit suicide, but really fled to South America, and lived for some time.
As his corpse was never found, i like this conspiracy theory.

I was pretty sure the Mussilini shot was upside down. Otherwise rigor mortis really did weird things to him.
The JFK shot really shocked me.

RobS: He and his mistress were shot standing up and then hung upside from butcher hooks as a warning to other fascists and for the public to have their go at him. As for the JFK shot - I picked the less horrific of the two public photos. You don’t want to see the other.

for some reason the last sentance in the paragraph about Nicolae Ceausescu made me laugh. Everything up until then was all sad and serious then the last line was just so random.
I think Marilyn Monroe looked so weird was because her hair was wet and pushed back. We’re all used to seeing her with blond poofy short hair, plus it’s a black and white picture of someone who’s been dead for probably a day or 2, so you’re gonna look different after that.

On the notion that Hitler escaped Berlin…there is a really interesting book out there called “Stuka Pilot,” by Nazi Germany’s top Stuka ace, Hans-Ulrich Rudel. Rudel was a staunch supporter of the Riech and of the invasion of the Soviet Union in particular. Anyway, he gives an interesting account of how, during the final hours of the Battle of Berlin, he was confident he could have landed his Stuka on the street outside fo the bunker and could have flown hitler to safety. He implored Hitler to take the plan, but Hitler, Rudel says, refused. Shortly afterwards, the Bunker fell. To me, that puts a pretty big nail in the coffin of this particular conspiracy theory.
Oh, cool list, BTW. jfrater strikes again! That photo of Marilyn was pretty off-putting. I also remember when they killed Ceaucescu. That guy really struck me as being the architect of his own downfall.

Monroe was found lying face down (some say staged) but the photo appears to show some lividity (blood pooling) or Tardieu’s ecchymoses (burst capillaries) on her face - difficult to say for sure.
The Kennedy photo you chose is disturbing (the large hole in his neck is from a tracheotomy + bullet entry wound) but definitely not as gruesome as the one showing the back of his head decimated by the projectile.

Bill: Thanks for that - it is an interesting tale - I definitely believe he died in the bunker. And you are right about Ceausescu (who has one of the most difficult names to spell that I have come across on this site!)

Very interesting list. Those photos are very striking. I was in a comic book shop once, that had for purchase a card set featuring images from the “Zapruder film” and images from JFK’s autopsy.
They were sitting along side some of those Serial killer trading cards. At the time I didn’t find them of interest. I wish now I would have purchased
them. They most likely held some very rare images.

The picture of ‘Hitler’ is not of Hitler. This is a very famous picture of a dead German soldier who had a Hitler-style moustache, which for some years after the war was publicised as a photo of the dead Fuhrer, but this has been thoroughly debunked. You can research this if you wish. No photos of Hitler’s corpse were taken, for the same reason they torched his body: Hitler didn’t want to be posthumously mocked like Mussolini, either in photos or real life.
Hitler didn’t shoot himself in the forehead (as shown in this photo, which has a bullet hole in the forehead). He shot himself in the temple (side of the head). All of this is pretty well known.

Every year in my country (Romania) around christmas, they show on tv videos of the trial of Nicolae and Ileana Ceausescu, and i must tell you…it’s hillarious!
At one point when she realizes that thing’s gone bad she says to some soldiers somethin’ like “common’ kids, don’t be mean”

karlontxo: I guess it was probably safer to do it immediately and not run the risk of him escaping and causing more damage. Having said that, if he had just been put in jail for life we probably wouldn’t have to bear seeing his image on the teenager’s tee-shirts who have no idea what he did.

i dont think the jfk one is disturbing at all ive seen photos of bodies that are half soup. Marilyn Monroes photo doesnt tell us that most of her beauty was in the makeup because her body was left for 2 days in the morgue and before it was even claimed so she was dead nearly a week before burial, when my friend died her body looked awful and she was one of the prettiest girls i know so death has a veyr negative impact on your physical appearance just incase people thought that marilyn was ugly

Funny that people who log onto a website looking for photos of dead people then refer to them as “gruesome”. What were they expecting?
I think you should add some more photos. How about the guy who had his arms and legs chopped off by the crowd and then had his torso paraded around town in a wheelbarrow?

As noted in a BBC article about the public release of photos Uday and Qusay Hussein’s dead bodies, the practice goes back to ancient Greece, and definitely serves a political and public purpose.
I’d like to see more photos of dead U.S. Presidents, particularly those who have been in office during the 21st century.

re the Monroe picture. I have a book called Unnatural Death, written by Michael Barden MD, an ex-Chief Medical Examiner for the City of NY (ISBN : 0 7474 0813 0)
That photo is in the book, and here is a direct quote from Barden : “the picture was taken after autopsy and it is the pathologist’s work that caused the face to sag. Before the procedure, say those present, the lifeless Marilyn remained beautiful”.

marilyn monroe was drugged by members of the luchese crime family. alongside jon kennedy and robert kennedy, monroe also had affairs with underworld kingpins. one of whom being the boss of the luchese family. a few weeks before her death, marilyn overheard the boss talking with a few soldiers about a alleged hit on carlo gambino. the luchese boss overheard this, but he kept quiet until the night of her death. he knew marilyn monroes death would be huge news, and he could not risk the publicity. luckily a great plan came into place. the luchese family boss was incarcerated on drug charges and that would keep out of the lime light. he sent 3 men over to monroes house one night. she apparently thought she was getting picked up. they injected her with a lethal dose of a undisclosed substance, threatened her housekeeper with her family’s life, and left her house. official cause of death, accidental overdose.

Why would hitler commit suicide? He had dozens of doubles. The body they presented as his was that of a double known only as “the man from Berlin”, hitler escaped to Argentina along with many prominent nazis. In fact the CIA and the vatican assisted many nazis in escaping, this was known as project paperclip, look it up, it is well documented.

This is in response to the picture of “Hitler”. I did not see the picture you had posted however, in doing searches on the internet I came across a picture that someone assumed was Hitler’s corpse. The explanation of the picture was that it was of Hitler’s body double who had been captured and assassinated with a gunshot wound to the forehead. Don’t know if that helps or not because I didn’t see the one you had posted.

Hitlers body was burned and later identified by his surgeon and the story confimed lots of ppl that saw his dead body after he shot himself along with his long time lover and short time wife eva hitler (born eva braun) which preferred the poison over a bullet.
The body they found in Berlin was one of Hitlers doubles (i only know of one double) who was shot by the SS trying to cover Hitler but the body was quickly identified as double since the poor soul was wearing patched socks. At the time they still had hope that the Führer would flee Berlin what refused to do.
The JFK pic is poor and doesn’t show much of the damage the 3 hired mafia hitmen delivered. He was shot in the throat up front and shot in the head from below the road out of a duct. The 3rd shooter missed…the bullet from the headshot was rasped to work like a dumdum bullet splashing his brain out all over Jackie Kennedy. There are more photos that show this.
Marilyn Monroe had an autopsy. When doing an autopsy they usally open the skull to examine the brain and therefore the skin of the head is cut open and the face skin pulled down…so much for her beauty. She plain and simply f****ed the wrong ppl…literaly and didn’t want to keep quit about it making demands for money as she was completly broke. Eihter the mob or the goverment killed her to cover up and tie up the loose ends.
Hermann Göring didn’t hide any posion. He had a secretary asking a soldier to give him some paper and a pen to write stuff in prison and in the pen was the capsule with the poison.
Che Guevara was dug out some years ago and it was found that his hands were missing. He got his hand cut off after beeing shot dead as a keepsake of the military f**k who was in charge at the time. They were kept in alcohol and are preserved to this day.

That picture of JFK is utterly shocking. I don’t think any gorier picture of him could compare to the expression on his face in this one.
If you decide to do another one of these lists, I suggest the (Catholic acknowledged) incorruptible body of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes. Even if people from other religions do not acknowledge it, it’s an interesting story nonetheless.

Brittney- yeah the pics of River Phoenix are pretty disturbing, and I remember the first time I saw Marilyn Monroe’s morgue pic it haunted me for a long time. Since then I’ve seen lots of gross and creepy death pictures, celebrity or otherwise. I’m interested in–as disgusting as this sounds–pictures of exhumed bodies. Anyone out there got any info?

Marilyn, by the coronor’s and witnesses’ accounts was as beautiful in death as she had been in life. The post-mortem photograph on this site was taken after the autopsy when much of the fluid had been drained from the body, thus accounting for the slackened skin. (She was, after all, a young woman and didn’t have “baggage” around the jaw.) If one refers to photos taken of her shortly before her death it is obvious that her beauty was not merely owing to makeup.

and yea the MM one was creepy. I knew she wasn’t the ‘100% natural beauty’ advertised and she’d had plastic surgery, bleaching etc. but just looks like a totally different person.
And just a random musing. a few individuals on this list asked to be shot instead of hung, and had their requests refused.
Just got me wondering. anyone know WHY this is? As in, why refuse the request? Dead is dead. If a government makes a decision to kill someone does it really matter HOW they die, hanging over shooting or something?
Doesn’t make a bunch of sense to me… Well ok the only ’sense’ i can make of it is chilling. and that is, human beings are sadistic and cruel by nature, and as the length of a noose rope is RARELY the correct length, it often results in the victim being strangled slowly to death thereby suffering more and offering some sick pleasure to the individuals watching, as oppose to the intended result of the neck snapping. (or if the rope is too long the head can, and has been in the past, be pulled clean off, severed @ the neck).

Sure, why not. My first time I saw this image was on a back street in Ohio, USA. I was driving along in a truck had at the time and used it for picking up stuff I thought worth picking up. I saw a heap of interest, off a particuliar side street, and stopped to rummage. A box of books fell out within my scavaging. The Monroe book that was published with the above photo caught my hands and eyes and it was tossed in the back when I saw the pics.

Re photograph of Marilyn Monroe…this was taken after autopsy and the original bears a police file number. The facial discoloration occured after death and it is the surgeons work that caused her face to sag. According to those who witnessed the autopsy proceedure the lifeless Marilyn remained beautiful.
