Top 10 Unusual But Beautiful Women
Published on September 26, 2007 - 146 Comments
We are constantly bombarded with ugly people lists (even I am a perpetrator of writing these types of lists) so I decided to do the reverse - a list of women generally considered unusual or ugly, but who can be very beautiful. Most of the beautiful celebrities only look beautiful because of their makeup anyway - why not give these ladies the same treatment? So, here is my list of 10 not-normally-considered-beautiful beautiful women. In no particular order.
1. Courtney Love

Courtney Love often ranks at the top of ugly celebrity lists. She was married to Kurt Cobain (of Nirvana fame) until he killed himself in 1994. She formed her own band called Hole.
2. Juliette Lewis
Juliette Lewis is recognized as one of Hollywood’s most talented and versatile actors of her generation. She first stunned mass audiences and critics alike with her Oscar-nominated performance as ‘Danielle Bowden’ in Cape Fear (1991). To date, she has worked with some of the most revered directors in the industry: Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Lasse Hallström, Oliver Stone, and Garry Marshall. Most recently, she received an Emmy nomination for her performance in My Louisiana Sky (2001) (TV). Whether lending dramatic authenticity or a natural comedic flair, Lewis graces her roles with remarkable range and an original and captivating style.
3. Uma Thurman
A breakthrough role for the tall, blonde actress came when she played Cecile de Volanges in Dangerous Liaisons (1988). More attention came with the NC-17 rated Henry & June (1990), but it was Thurman’s role in the Quentin Tarantino classic Pulp Fiction (1994) that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Donning a short black wig to play femme fatale Mia Wallace opposite John Travolta’s hitman Vincent Vega, Thurman earned a place in film history. She is, of course, recently famous for her role in the Kill Bill films.
4. Fairuza Balk
Fairuza Balk began her career as a child on the ABC special The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (1983) (TV) and the Disney movie Return to Oz (1985). She attended the Bush Davies Performing Arts School in the UK for two and a half years, where she landed a series of jobs. She won a CableAce award as Best Actress for her role in the TV movie Shame (1987) and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best actress for Gas, Food Lodging (1992). She also starred in The Waterboy (1998) and American History X, for which is probably most famous.
5. Amy Winehouse
Amy Jade Winehouse (born 14 September 1983) is an English soul, jazz, and R&B singer and songwriter. Winehouse’s debut album, Frank (released in 2003) was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Winehouse is a two-time Ivor Novello Award winner; once in 2004 for her debut single “Stronger than Me” and again in May 2007 for the first single “Rehab” from her 2006 album Back to Black. On 14 February 2007, she won a BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist (she had also been nominated for Best British Album). She has recently been in the press a great deal due to her drug and alcohol abuse.
6. Minnie Driver
Minnie Driver (born Amelia Fiona J. Driver on January 31, 1970) is an English actress and singer-songwriter. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. She first came to broad public attention when she played the lead role in Circle of Friends. In 2003 and 2004, she had a noted recurring role on Will & Grace as Lorraine Finster, Karen Walker’s (Megan Mullally) nemesis and daughter of Karen’s lover, (John Cleese).
7. Ann Coulter
Ann Hart Coulter (born December 8, 1961) is an American conservative columnist, political commentator and best-selling author. She frequently appears on television, radio and as a speaker at public and private events. Known for her confrontational style, she has been described by The Observer as “the Republican Michael Moore”, and “Rush Limbaugh in a miniskirt”.
8. Sandra Bernhardt
Sandra Bernhard (born June 6, 1955 in Flint, Michigan) is an American comedian, actress, author and singer. She first gained attention in the late 1970s with her stand-up comedy where she often bitterly critiques celebrity culture and political figures. She is also famous for her close friendship to Madonna during the late 1980s. Bernhard is number 97 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 greatest standups of all time.
9. Melanie Griffith
Melanie Griffith was born on August 9, 1957, in New York City to model Tippi Hedren and advertising executive and sometime actor Peter Griffith. Unfortunately, as her career progressed, she became increasingly dependent on drugs and alcohol and she acquired such a reputation because of the effects of her substance abuse that she found that studio executives weren’t considering her for film roles anymore. She is currently married to Antonio Banderas.
10. Cate Blanchett
Catherine Élise Blanchett (born on May 14, 1969) is an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning Australian actress. She is most famous for her roles in The Talented Mr Ripley, and playing the part of Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

1. dalandzadgad - September 26th, 2007 at 7:18 am
i hold that almost everyone can look beautiful with enough makeup.
then i saw ann coulter…*barf*
2. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 7:20 am
hah I know you all too well
I just knew that Ann Coulter was cause some controversy
I actually think she is quite attractive.
3. Cyn - September 26th, 2007 at 7:24 am
Ann Coulter? *gag* you have got to be kidding! and no, i don’t think its just my political bias showing. she’s a prime example of how one is inside reflecting how one is outside w/ her hate speech and perverse ideology distorting her somewhat classical features making her appear the gender confused horse faced hag she comes off as on TV.
4. Cyn - September 26th, 2007 at 7:25 am
oh..just saw your comment about her being attractive..Jaime you should get out more! *gah*
5. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 7:27 am
hahaha
6. Kelsi - September 26th, 2007 at 7:48 am
No Tilda Swinton or Drew Barrymore? I think they’re both unusual looking but very beautiful…
7. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 7:55 am
Kelsi: I had Tilda Swinton on the list and replaced her with someone else in the end. I think Drew Barrymore is attractive at all times - so I didn’t think she should be on the list
8. wowzer - September 26th, 2007 at 7:57 am
Ann Coulter… *shudders* She gives Botox a bad name. But Uma Thurmon? I’m sorry, but Uma Thurmon would be beautiful after having been hit by a comet… twice. Awesome list, as usual.
9. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 8:01 am
wowzer: hehe. I have seen Uma on a few ugly lists which always surprised me - I agree with you.
10. evan - September 26th, 2007 at 8:08 am
just goes to show what makeup, lighting, and photoshop can do….ugh courtney love
11. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 8:11 am
evan: you have to agree though - she looks better there than any other photo you’ve ever seen her in!
12. Morgaine - September 26th, 2007 at 8:29 am
Hmm… Uma thurman just has an unusual face, I’ve never known how to “judge” her
I think that it’s the whole what makes a person attractive, more than the face, of course none of these women would look the same with other clothes or make up.
Well, without knowing anything about Ann Coulter, she also looks attractive to me (It changes if she appears as a screaming witch on TV :P)
I would put Tilda Swinton here, instead of Kate Blanchett (She looks pretty to me, specially after playing Galadriel).
Great list anyway!
13. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 8:30 am
Morgaine: I didn’t expect that anyone would agree with me on Ann Coulter
14. Morgaine - September 26th, 2007 at 8:52 am
If what everybody else says is true, I think it’s just because I’ve never heard her talk, am I wrong?
(But yes, I still think she is attractive)
15. Clovis Sangrail - September 26th, 2007 at 8:57 am
weird… Sandra Bernhard is included in both ugliest and unusual but beautiful female celebrities?
http://listverse.com/people/to.....lebrities/
16. Leo - September 26th, 2007 at 8:58 am
I’m not a democrat but Ann Coulter is not attractive at all, I think her personality has to do a lot with it…she should have been replaced with Cristina Ricci
17. Cyn - September 26th, 2007 at 8:59 am
http://www.youtube.com/results.....rch=Search
if the link doesn’t work just enter Ann Coulter into search at YouTube and there’ll be plenty of opportunities to see her in action
18. YH - September 26th, 2007 at 8:59 am
this is all just wrong, all these pics are photoshoped to hell.
19. scoff - September 26th, 2007 at 9:26 am
Ann Coulter?????
She is by far on of the most unattractive women I have ever seen, and maybe it’s because I have heard her speak.
20. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 9:28 am
YH: in a way that is the point - most ugly celeb lists are people we normally consider beautiful but they are shown without their makeup - so I thought I would do the opposite- a beautiful list of women often considered ugly.
Scoff: In the photo here she has classic good looks - just try to imagine her without hearing her
21. Leo - September 26th, 2007 at 9:43 am
Jamie likes Ann… and he wants to kiss her… (kid’s voice singing)
22. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 9:54 am
Good God! What have I started?
23. Bonnie_ - September 26th, 2007 at 9:59 am
Should have left Long Tall Annie off the list. Once politics enters the conversation, rational thinking goes the other way and the kiddies come in and start slinging mud. That’s no fun.
I’m pleased at your list and I think these women are beautiful. How sad that some of their personal choices are ruining their God-given beauty.
24. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 10:01 am
Bonnie_ - you are so right
25. Cyn - September 26th, 2007 at 10:04 am
*pshaw* this is tame by some forums standards. ’sides its a good list. you’re doing just fine, Jaime. a little controversy is good for the circulation…LOL (in more ways than one!)
26. Angela - September 26th, 2007 at 10:10 am
I always thought Cate Blanchett was really attractive in her own way. She seems like a sort of more mature, older kind of beauty.
27. conni - September 26th, 2007 at 10:16 am
I’m glad you put Courtney in there. She’s crazy as a loon, but I think she’s pretty. Sandra has always made me shudder. ugh.
28. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 10:31 am
Cyn: I did expect some controversy - just not as much
Angela: I do too - I am always surprised to see her on ugly women lists.
conni: I nearly died when I saw that photo - I have never seen her looking so good.
29. YH - September 26th, 2007 at 10:34 am
ahhh
30. YH - September 26th, 2007 at 10:35 am
that was just me passing gas
31. wowzer - September 26th, 2007 at 10:49 am
It’s amazing how many responses there have been to this post so far. Almost unanimously everyone hates Ann Coulter. That aside, a agree with the fact that a little healthy controversy is good, but once it gets down to name-calling and such, it’s gone a bit too far. But I’m game: I am biased against Ann because of her loud and obnoxious mud-slinging. That aside, I still don’t think I would consider her beautiful if she were, um, someone other than who she is. Amy Winehouse is pretty nice looking, though.
YH: … I’m debating whether or not to even dignify your gas-passage with a witty response…
32. Jackie - September 26th, 2007 at 10:51 am
I agree with a lot of people Tilda Swinton should be on there….I would replace Sandra Bernhardt with Tilda Swinton (don’t get me wrong, I like Sandra but..don’t think she’s attractive enough to make the list).
I liked this list Jamie!
33. Cyn - September 26th, 2007 at 10:55 am
now we need the male version. and no, i ain’t doing it. its all i can do around here to read, comment and keep the taco and dessert bars stocked!
34. Joe - September 26th, 2007 at 11:48 am
-Uma has always topped my list of hotties.
-I agree with Jamie, Coulter is attractive (Her body can’t help what her politics are).
-Totally disagree with bernhard.
Great list.
35. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 11:50 am
Cyn: The male version will be harder because most of the famous ugly men don’t wear makeup often enough - but who knows - maybe I can work it out
Joe: Thanks
36. Dan - September 26th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
No Sarah Silverman?
37. Leo - September 26th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
hmm…taco and dessert…yummy
38. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 12:02 pm
Dan: I think she is quite classically beautiful to start with.
Leo: Thanks for letting us know
39. shelleym - September 26th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
How about Bryce Dallas Howard?
Played in Lady in the Water and The Village. She has such an unusual prettiness.
40. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
shelleym: she is perfect for the list - I forgot about her.
41. god_in_a_cup - September 26th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
i think courtney love used to be very hot. one of her videos ( i dont know which one sorry) she looked so amazing in it i didnt beleive it was her. i still barely believe it.
but then she started shooting up behind a mcdonalds dumpster. sad.
42. simply C is now Diogenes - September 26th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
what differs with me:
3) Uma has become too thin and gawky/muscles and tall for my taste.
1) C. Love- one of few that may look better after the plastic surgery and suctions and injections. I remember her “live” on MTV sobbing over Cobain’s grave (shortly after) calling him an asshole, ect—- big bags under her eyes and pasty and puffy heroin complexion. My friend viewing this and saying, “Good God! She looks like my grandmother” Any fan of Nirvana may say she’s surface attractive but it quickly ends there.
2. Juliette Lewis- Never ever liked her or found her attractive, let alone beautiful. If she does one more white trash “Ah Gawd!” role…Ugh…Never have I thought “that” as attractive. How many bars have hoes like this I ask?
Ann Coulter-like an older sister I have guilty fantasies of.
8. Sandra Bernhardt—never. Jeez that mouth. but, I know some guys like masculine bitchy women. I was working at a Madonna party once, where S.B. was hogging the papparazzzziii pit and I waited and waited for her to finish so that I could pass and get on with my job..This wasn’t going to happen so I said “f-ck it!” I went real close past in front of her as a “big F U”
9. Melanie Griffith- I find her delicate and sad. I agree with the attractive side..but here again is the later variation of the flesh like C.Love.
10. Cate Blanchett- I wonder. That film noirish movie she was in, showed that she looks like the silver screen actress pretties–but somewhat different, unusual in a simmiliar way as Anjelica Huston is considered beautiful by some.
Good actress though and I am really intrigued interested in seeing her in the role of/as Dylan.
43. Fe - September 26th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
My facial recognition is so bad that when I go to the movies, most of the time I have to keep track of the actors by remembering what they are wearing, rather than their features. (Which can be the pits if it’s a movie with lots of costume changes.) Most of the women on this list are actually ones I favor, simply because they are different from the usual mold of barbie dolls and I can pick them out of a line up.
For instance, show me a picture of Scarlett Johansen, who is a very pretty woman, and I won’t have a clue who she is, though I have several of her movies. Show me a picture of Mary Steenburgen or Angelica Huston and I know exactly who I am looking at.
44. ben - September 26th, 2007 at 4:19 pm
Lol I smelled trouble as soon as ann coulter was on here, but i support your decision Jamie. That picture of fairuza balk reminded me of another person i wouldnt mind on the list, that one lady from the O.C. (she was marissas mom or something, never atually watched it) and also had a role on the real C.S.I. as Lady Heather
45. Cyn - September 26th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
oooh..i remember Lady Heather from CSI. i thought that was her on this new show. thanks. and no i don’t watch the new one, just caught a glimpse. that whole story line w/ Lady Heather and Grissom was so sexay. LOL
46. Mathilda - September 26th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
Uma Thurman has such strong facial structure. It is interesting to me that in Dangerous Liasons, where the female characters appeared to be wearing very little make-up, she was one of the most beautiful actresses in the film.
I agree that most of the women on this list, in the photos shown, are quite attractive. I have to wonder if they were all unknowns and not celebrities, would we normally view them as “ugly”, or do their (apparent) personalities (or lack thereof) play that major of a role in determining their attractiveness? (I’m thinking Ann Coulter, Juliette Lewis and Sandra Berhnhardt here!)
Maybe our mothers were more right than they knew when they said that pretty is as pretty does! The older I get, the more I learn that my mother usually was right.
47. ben - September 26th, 2007 at 4:45 pm
cyn-yea i did my homework and her name is melinda clarke. I agree it got pretty hott at times but they were both cordial i thought it added a lot of depth to the story
48. Diogenes - September 26th, 2007 at 6:03 pm
Thanks Mathilda for your comment questioning personality with beauty, it broadens some of what was part of my thought process within my own comment. With age I think that what one considers beautiful becomes a deeper well. but for the most part our own sexual and individual prefrences and tastes along with prejudialness and distastes are a part of the way each person is and may never change.
49. chadster - September 26th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Nailed it man. These ladies can definitely be beautiful sometimes, but most of the time just don’t seem to be.
50. Loose_Cannon - September 26th, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Cyn-i don’t think its just my political bias showing. she’s a prime example of how one is inside reflecting how one is outside w/ her hate speech and perverse ideology distorting her somewhat classical features making her appear the gender confused horse faced hag she comes off as on TV.
Why would anyone confuse your political bias with your description of Ann Coulter? It’s so obvious in your neutrally bias criticism of Ann Coulter that it’s not her political views your criticizing, but her flawed beauty.
It’s sorta like claiming the documents for the bases of a story are false and forged, but the story is still very true. But there’s no political bias in that.
51. Cyn - September 26th, 2007 at 8:40 pm
loose canon….er…well, i am biased. LOL so i was kinda heading that off at the pass. if she kept her mouth shut and covered her throat she does have some the classical elements of ‘beauty’. but she does not keep her mouth shut..unfortunately. and it is her politics and prejudices i take issue w/ too.
as has been said here many times…it is true…that who you are on the inside impacts how you look on the outside. i’m thinking of all those National Geographic covers. or Time covers. of people’s faces. the incredible beauty of joy or sorrow in their eyes in what would be an otherwise ordinary face. that kinda stuff.
52. thebrokedown - September 26th, 2007 at 10:12 pm
How about Jamie Lee Curtis? I find her attractive, but I’m always surprised when men do, because she is so not the typical beauty. Men do seem to love her, though.
53. jfrater - September 26th, 2007 at 10:45 pm
Simply C: Great comment! Thanks
All your points are valid (except the Juliette Lewis one - she is one of my favorite actresses!)
Fe: That makes a lot of sense. I think the movies would be far more interesting to watch if they allowed women to be as plain or downright ugly as the men. For some reason ugliness seems to be an asset to men in films.
Mathilda: your mother’s quote sums up entirely the reason that so many people don’t like Ann Coulter. Thanks
the brokedown: she would definitely be a great addition to the list. Some people even say she has hermaphroditic qualities. I don’t think she is that bad at all.
54. Late O’Day - September 27th, 2007 at 1:22 am
Regina Spektor
I would not call her beautiful in the classical sense, she has a touch of girl-next-door frumpiness, but she cultivates a unique “look” that weakens the male knee-bones.
Check out her song on YouTube.
55. Loose_Cannon - September 27th, 2007 at 5:05 am
Cyn-loose canon….er…well, i am biased. LOL so i was kinda heading that off at the pass. if she kept her mouth shut and covered her throat she does have some the classical elements of ‘beauty’. but she does not keep her mouth shut..unfortunately. and it is her politics and prejudices i take issue w/ too.
I agree. Every time I see Rosie, Whoopi or the late Molly Ivins I throw up a little in my mouth. They definitely show their inner self in their outer self.
You should read Coulter’s article this week. It has to do with the hypocrisy of universities like Columbia who will invite dictators like Ahmadinejad to speak their view on the basis of ‘free speech’, but refuse to invite conservative speakers. She makes a good point.
Open your mind.
Tase Him Bro! (new window)
56. lydia - September 27th, 2007 at 5:08 am
Uma Thurman is 100% beautiful, and does not belong on this list.
57. Cyn - September 27th, 2007 at 6:28 am
loose canon
Why Liberals Are Smarter Than Conservatives
its the conservative pundits like Coulter who are homophobic, racist, hate mongering and close minded. as for that speech..didn’t see. so no comment.
as for Whoopi and Rosie..they lost ’street cred’ once they went on The View. as for Molly Ivins..for shame canon! she is a personal idol of mine. how dare you impugn her name! may she rest in blessed peace.
58. Loose_Cannon - September 27th, 2007 at 6:37 am
Cyn - its the conservative pundits like Coulter who are homophobic, racist, hate mongering and close minded. as for that speech..didn’t see. so no comment.
Apparently, liberals are so smart they have risen above using proper grammar and punctuation. Gosh, I hope my kids don’t turn out to be that intelligent someday.
As for Molly Ivins being your idol; I guess your view is her shaggy looks were a cruel twist of nature, rather then her inner hate-filled self reaching out, while Coulter’s lack of beauty comes from within. How convenient.
59. jfrater - September 27th, 2007 at 6:40 am
fight! fight!
60. wowzer - September 27th, 2007 at 6:59 am
Loose_Cannon: Alright people, lets not get down and dirty here. This is supposed to be a friendly comment board after all. Frankly, I’ve become an inextricable part of so many “arguement boards” on other websites that I really don’t care to have this one spoiled. I actually kind of enjoy being able to voice an opinion about something without being hounded for my beliefs and/or eccentricities; I try my darnedest to listen to and accept the opinions of others, and I wish that more people would try too. So lets get back to the real issue: which of these chickies are butt-ass ugly and which aren’t.
61. Cyn - September 27th, 2007 at 7:33 am
1st off…when i write fiction for publication i do take the time and effort to make it ‘proper’. this is a commentary on a website not a thesis. when i blog or participate in sites like this (which right now this is the only one for reasons like this kinda exchange)i write this way. people who actually know (and love me) ‘get it’. ’sides it being an accepted ‘webspeak’ sorta way of communicating online. lazy or not.
you need to go back and see pictures of Ivins before age and disease took its toll.
and no Jaime…i ain’t into fighting. sorry. so put away the popcorn. LOL
loose canon…don’t provoke me. this is a friendly arena….let’s keep it that way. you wanna pick fights w/ people..there are plenty of forums out there for that.
and yeah..i’m gonna get outa my own way now and shut up. even though i just set myself up in another post. *wah wah*
this is for entertainment purposes only. i must keep repeating that to myself. and don’t feed the trolls.
62. Cyn - September 27th, 2007 at 8:09 am
Texas Observer: Molly Ivins cover story
she was a cutie! *sigh*
63. AnotherEngine - September 27th, 2007 at 8:19 am
Might I suggest Catherine Keener. A great actress and pretty foxy in her own right.
64. Loose Cannon - September 27th, 2007 at 8:53 am
Cyn - loose canon…don’t provoke me. this is a friendly arena….let’s keep it that way. you wanna pick fights w/ people..there are plenty of forums out there for that.
Let me see if I understand; You post a link to why liberals are smarter then conservatives, but somehow I provoked you in pointing out you lack of proper grammar and hypocrisy in pointing out people’s flawed beauty??
If you’ll recall, I approached your first reply in a conciliatory manner, agreeing with your hypothesis that ugly views can beget an ugly appearance. I posted a link to Coulter’s recent article to tease you a bit, but there was no offense intended.
If you’re not into fighting, as you claim, why do you continue to provoke me?
65. netexile - September 27th, 2007 at 9:34 am
Is that a picture of Amy Winehouse losing bowel control? I hear coming off Heroin will do that
66. jfrater - September 27th, 2007 at 11:38 am
netexile: how mean! She isn’t all that bad! She just dropped her posh slippers!
67. wowzer - September 27th, 2007 at 11:39 am
Loose_Cannon and Cyn: Lets drop it. I don’t care who started what wehn, but it’s irritating to have to sift through personal vendettas to read other comments. Just stop reacting to the provocations and we’ll all be fine.
68. jfrater - September 27th, 2007 at 11:53 am
bah! As long as everyone is having fun it doesn’t matter in the end. People will always disagree - at least we can do it in a civil way
69. Sean - September 27th, 2007 at 1:35 pm
I agree with most of these choices, and believe that sans a few selections this list is perfect. However, I must ask do you think that Angelina Jolie isn’t the littlest unusual? I think she belongs there much more than Ann Coulter. She may not be as weird, but she definitely is more attractive.
70. Marco - September 27th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
1. I was afraid Björk was going to be in here; thankfully she isn’t
2. Ann Coulter is not human
71. 80toy - September 27th, 2007 at 2:03 pm
umm…amy winehouse and sandra bernhardt will never be beautiful. well maybe with a paper bag and a light switch…then again…no.
72. jfrater - September 27th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Sean: Jolie has massive lips - but otherwise I don’t think she is too weird.
Marco: Bjork would have been a perfect addition - I forgot her (lucky you!)
80toy: come on- if you imagine the Bernhardt photo isn’t her, it isn’t that bad!
73. Loose Cannon - September 27th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Wowzer - Loose_Cannon and Cyn: Lets drop it. I don’t care who started what wehn, but it’s irritating to have to sift through personal vendettas to read other comments.
Are you going to send me to my room without dinner if I misbehave, Wowzer?
Seriously, what a boring site this would be if people just agreed on everything, all the time. Better we should have an open and honest disagreement, in good spirit, of course, then to just agree with each other over everything.
I think Cyn made an accurate point when she stated that ugliness within can not be covered by the beauty of the skin. We disagree on who it applies to; I believe it applies to everyone, she seems to think it only applies to conservatives.
74. Wowzer - September 27th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
Loose_Cannon: I agree, it’d be a bit boring, but in my experience these types of comments have seemed to always degenerate into useless crapola name calling. Sorry if I jumped the gun a bit, I was merely attempting to nip it in the bud, per se. Now, lets keep things rolling: Bjork shouldn’t have been on this list; I don’t care if she is pretty or not, but her bansheelike wailings seem to reflect the pain and terror of every ring of Hell combined, distilled, and bottled up with gym socks. No offense to her fans, of course
75. netexile - September 27th, 2007 at 4:05 pm
Wowzer: Perfect description of Bjork, could not have put it better myself
76. Marcy - September 27th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
Late O’Day:
Regina Spektor makes me weak in the knees also. I think the best part about her is the way she looks, well, normal. While still being smoking hot, of course. She should have been on this list!
77. jfrater - September 28th, 2007 at 2:04 am
Okay - you guys are mean. You are going to start me on the war path! Bjork is brilliant!

Renee Zellweger anyone????

there are no qualities about courtney love that can be found attractive. i must strongly disagree with you.
however, i love the site. your lists are fascinating.
80. bob - September 29th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
juliette lewis is one of the hottest ladies ever !
81. Punjar - October 3rd, 2007 at 6:47 am
You’ve got to be kidding. Courtney Love? She’s drooling half the time she shows up anywhere and barely has control of what he body does.
82. jfrater - October 3rd, 2007 at 7:57 am
Punjar: yeah - but at least she looks good in the photo here
83. pmm - October 24th, 2007 at 7:49 am
so basically…in order to be beautiful you have to be white?
84. evan - October 24th, 2007 at 7:53 am
remember its not-normally-considered-beautiful beautiful woman, somewhat famous woman at that too. So no, race is not a factor. God no matter what the list, griefers come out complaining about one thing or another. jfrater i do not envy you
85. jfrater - October 24th, 2007 at 7:55 am
pmm: I do not know of any non-white women generally considered to be ugly that have beautiful photographs I can include. Feel free to mention some. Incidentally - I don’t do politically correct lists - which means that if I have ten women all white or all non-white because they are the top 10, I won’t leave some off just to “include” other races - I believe that to be extremely dishonest.
86. evan - October 24th, 2007 at 8:00 am
Careful Jfrater to specifically state black women, you’ll have someone of a different race complaining about Asians not being on there, or Latino or, etc.. Then you’ll have someone chime in and state that black is offensive that you should use the term “African-American”, but then if you do that, your viewers from Europe will post saying “hey! not all blacks are African-American, what about African-Englanders or whatever” lol, but then the African-Africans will mention that not all Africans are black….and so on and so on. Has everyone traded ration thought for some lame attempt at political correctness here?
87. jfrater - October 24th, 2007 at 8:42 am
evan: good point - I wasn’t think - thanks.
88. Ogre - October 24th, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Ann Coulter is a biggotted ignorant bitch who wouldn’t be on TV if a despot like Bush wasn’t in the Whitehouse. Beautiful??? My BUNG HOLE is more beautiful than this fascist c#nt!
And Courtney Love is coked up psychopath with delusions of talent.
With all the REALLY interesting and beautiful women out there (OF ANY COLOR) How could you possibly include these two pigs?
How about this one:
No Particular Order:
1. Oprah Winfrey - Not because of her TV show fame, but because she is HONESTLY trying to help people.
2. Vida Guerra - http://www.vidasworld.com/ Because looking that good from behind is a gift from the Gods.
3. Rose McGowen - Sadly though, Marilyn Manson doesn’t scrub off.
4. How about Linda Fiorentino? SMOKING!
5. Jamie Lee Curtis
6. Anne FREAKIN’ Margret dude!
7. Aishwarya Rai - makes me wish I was Brahman!
8. Alyson Hannigan
9.My wife
10. her girlfriend - damn, it’s good to be me….
89. evan - October 25th, 2007 at 5:42 am
Oprah Winfrey? I think I just…threw up…in my mouth..a little bit.
Via Guerra???Come on shes smoking hot, i dont think she fits the “not-normally-considered-beautiful beautiful woman” part of the list. As well as others on this your list.
90. jfrater - October 25th, 2007 at 5:56 am
Ogre: I try not to let my politics taint a list based on appearances
Thanks for your extras nevertheless
91. Albertan - October 29th, 2007 at 6:38 am
Oh Ann is beautiful inside and out….she gets the libs so twisted up…you have to love her for that fact alone!! (Cue orwellian screams of intolerance and bigoted ad nauseum)..though she could use a sandwich or two..
Sandra Bernhard..a total tire biter…nothing attractive about her in any kind of off beat way…oy…such a dog…
Keep up the great work!!!
From a Canadian!!
92. alisa - November 1st, 2007 at 4:43 am
I love Uma Thurman. I think the best movie she ever starred in was the first Kill Bill Vol. 1
93. Dangerous Dan - November 4th, 2007 at 5:33 am
I’m glad to know that someone else finds Courtney Love, Juliette Lewis, Fairuza Balk, Minnie Driver, and particularly, Sandra Bernhardt beautiful. I’ve seen many write that these women are unattractive or even ugly, but for the most part, I don’t understand how anyone can think or feel that way. I’ve never thought of Sandra Bernhardt as pretty, but I’ve always found her beautiful. Most of the other women on this list, are more beautiful, but I don’t think anyone (on this list) needs to hear it more often than Sandra.
94. Anastasia - November 8th, 2007 at 2:03 am
okay. here’s my question, why is Sandra Bernhard “unusual but beautiful” yet, still managed to make it onto the number 2 spot on Ugliest Female Celebrity List???
95. jfrater - November 8th, 2007 at 2:23 am
Anastasia: the point of this list was to take women that generally appear to be unattractive and show that they can be attractive - just as the media likes to take normally attractive women and show them in a bad light - I was doing the reverse for a bit of fun. In a way it was to poke fun at the media.
96. altanic - November 16th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
the top half of Coulter’s face looks great. Her hair, eyes and cheeks aren’t bad at all. But as you start working down that nose you realize it’s just a tad bit too long. And then you get to her mouth which no matter what face she’s making always causes me to think of a snarling dog. By the time you notice how far from her face her chin extends, whatever favorable effect her eyes had on you has been completely destroyed.
Cate Blanchett’s only odd feature are her ears. I love her voice though, which obviously can’t be portrayed in an image.
Fairuza Balk and Uma Thurman are perfect in this list. Balk also has a bit of a snarling look to her but on her it works. Uma’s wide-set eyes and somewhat flattish nose make her look a little odd but not enough to overcome the rest of her which is great.
I see Juliette Lewis and can only think of her father… I just can’t get over it. lol (see Geoffrey Lewis)
97. dofnup - November 20th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
Sir, Ann Coulter is a man! - Huey from The Boondocks
And thank you for NOT including Angelina Jolie, who is basically Jon Voight in drag. w00t!
98. jfrater - November 20th, 2007 at 1:32 pm
dofnup: There is something extremely wrong with Jolie’s lips.
99. racistscum - November 21st, 2007 at 1:25 am
Mann Coulter is a racist,ugly scumbag whore.And (s)he has an adam’s apple.
100. Anonymous - November 22nd, 2007 at 3:23 am
What about Margaret Cho and Kathy Griffin?
101. Taylor - November 28th, 2007 at 8:19 am
Uma Thurman is one of the most beautiful women in the world… a lot of people are jealous of the fact that she is grogeous and is talented and has a great personality. But we are talking just about looks here I guess. Uma Thurman is very attractive, but doesn’t belong here. She is exotic and other-worldy, but not a weird kind of unusual. As for Courtney Love, not so much lately, she is actually very pretty if not beautiful. Because of her loud, fearless and often seemingly crazy ways people call her ugly. I know she had plastic surgery and stuff, but before all of that and even kind of now, she look(ed/s) good. I don’t think she is evil, I think she has some talent and she hasn’t been able to get it all out yet. A lot of people judge her. She is looney, but she is very pretty too! I also always thought Juliette Lewis to be hot (have you seen Cold Creek Manor?). I also agree that Tilda Swinton belongs here! Cate Blacnhette has classic beauty, I wouldn’t call it unusual.
102. Barnacle - November 30th, 2007 at 4:04 am
I didn’t think much of fairuza balk until i saw her in the most recent version of the island of dr.moreau . She dances really well and her first scene was good.
Juliette lewis fans should see a french produced film called Blueberry (2004). It doesn’t leave much to the imagination.
103. Alexandra - December 3rd, 2007 at 1:06 am
Melanie Griffith? No offence to her or anything, but I’m not sure if any amount of make-up or good lighting could make her look nice. Maybe once, before her face happened, but not any more.
I do agree with the rest of your list. I think Cate Blanchett is stunning, and when Juliette isn’t wearing those awful ‘rock’n'roll’ clothes, she is quite good looking. Such a cutie in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?’
One person who I do think is commonly called odd looking and ugly is Liza Minelli. Not any more, now that she’s old, but in Cabaret she was stunning, in a pixie-like way.
104. eric n. - December 11th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
sigourney weaver… masculine looking, yet somehow attractive to me… chloe sevigny might fit on this list too. unusual looking but sexy in her way.
105. jfrater - December 12th, 2007 at 4:32 am
eric n. true on both names - Chloe Sevigny is a great actor too.
106. Slammerworm - December 20th, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Even we in New Zealand have heard of Ann ‘wicked witch of the Right’ Coulter. However, quite apart from her politics, she is rather mannish-looking (now there’s one really square Audie Murphy jaw) and therefore the least attractive on the list. Bjork would indeed have made a welcome substitution. Courtney had a fair bit of ‘work’ done, and the photo above is definitely an ‘after’ shot (not that she was that bad to begin with, though). The rest are actually pretty good-looking, in a ‘girl next door’ sort of way. Non-white nomination: Penelope Cruz (yeah, she scrubs up okay but she’s a bit weird-looking, too).
107. Randall - December 20th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Slammerworm is definitely correct here… rid of us of the mannish, churlish, and thoroughly despicable Ann Coulter, and replace her with the cute and bizarre Bjork, I sez.
108. Randall - December 20th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
jfrater:
I take it you’re okay? Heard about the earthquake in NZ…
109. sdggrant - December 20th, 2007 at 2:32 pm
Who made this list, and what kind of gad damned drugs are you on? Seriously, I don’t think I’m going to be able to get a hard on for the rest of the day after looking at this. *shudders*
110. kittym - December 20th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
sdggrant: Perhaps that’s for the best.
111. Slammerworm - December 20th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
Yeah, bad earthquake but we’re all good. Couple of buildings in Gisborne will have to be demolished, that’s all. Just in time for Xmas, eh?
Great site, BTW.
112. sdggrant - December 20th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
kittym: My girl with think otherwise…. I hope

113. Slammerworm - December 21st, 2007 at 1:46 am
Last post: ‘Viz’ once had a ‘Borderline Boilers’feature which celebrated the attraction, despite the ‘flawed beauty’, of many not-quite-stunning celebs. A further, more potentially (black, of course) comic topic?
114. Thelonious - December 22nd, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Bjork should’ve been on the list. Unusual, sexy, and brilliant. Rowr.
115. jfrater - December 23rd, 2007 at 1:14 am
Thelonious: I agree about Bjork being brilliant - I have all of her albums!
116. ChuChu353 - December 23rd, 2007 at 2:11 am
No matter what she does, Juliette Lewis will ALWAYS be Audrey #3 (Christmas Vacation)
117. suzi - December 29th, 2007 at 3:15 am
Uma does not belong on this list. She is always stunningly beautiful.
Bjork would make a great addition. Love her music, and find her looks intriguing.
118. Hombre - January 4th, 2008 at 4:31 am
Alanis Morsette? She was kind of good looking during the mid-90’s and not in the traditional way.
119. Hombre - January 4th, 2008 at 4:31 am
Or maybe Neve Campbell…but she’s plain now.
120. Hugo - January 4th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
I believe a pro could make Ann coulter look like a princess from a disney flick. Unfortunately My hand is not steady enough to feminize her macho jaw. Anyway, here it is:

122. Justine - January 14th, 2008 at 4:34 am
Cate Blanchett is bloody beautiful in every way! You hardly ever see her looking less than fantastic.
She has wonderful classic good looks. Her high cheekbones and cat-like eyes make her look almost like a goddess! Although she could be considered SLIGHTLY unusual looking, you could NEVER call her ugly. Shes magnificent.
123. fishing4monkeys - January 16th, 2008 at 4:24 am
Amy Winehouse!?!? BARF! She looks like a man! And an ugly man at that…
124. Monkey Nuts - January 18th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Ann coulter? She’s got an adam’s apple. And aside from the fact that she is a venomous cunt(I’m a republican) she’s fugly as hell.

Sarah Silverman should be on this list as well as Rose McGowan and Alyson Hannigan.

How can you have Sandrad Bernard on her as beautiful in her own way but then on your top 10 ugliest female celebrity. Just because they can make them look okay a digitally mastered retouch photo doesnt make them beautiful.
128. eh - February 2nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm
ugh
i hate everything about Ann Coulter
and she is NOT beautiful…in any way. and this isn’t just cuz i hate republicans.
129. sue - February 4th, 2008 at 1:09 am
Amy Winehouse has to be the worst looking celebrity I’ve seen in my life. She’s not “unusual but beautiful”she’s just plain unusual

sue:
So true…
131. TJames - February 7th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Cate Blanchett & Uma Thurman are both very beautiful. I always thought they were considered beautiful and very talented. Juliette Lewis is rather sexy, if not beautiful, very cute and nice to look at. I have to say, Courtney Love can look like a babe sometimes! She isn’t ugly, people just don’t like her as the person I suppose (she’s made some rockin’ tunes though). I really find nothing overly attractive ’bout Coutler. Amy Winehouse? Maybe… no. Sandra, I see her as “neutral”. Melanie Griffith could be that kind of plastic hot chick, but only for about 4 minutes. Minnie Driver is rather pretty. Balk, there is something about her!
132. D - February 27th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Maybe Melanie Griffith (especially when younger), but Amy Winehouse, Courtney Love???
here’s a better list - at least those are attractive women, although rather unknown…
http://www.wannabestar.co.uk/t.....ode=female
133. bad - March 1st, 2008 at 11:24 am
Something I notice about Ann Coulter - in every picture I see of her…she has an adams apple. WTF?
134. Angela - March 1st, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Uma Thurman? She is unique and beautiful, not unusual to make the list. Also, Cate B. is beautiful (not too sexy though). I know Courtney Love has done a lot of drugs in the past, but she can look very pretty, 100x better than Amy; Winehouse does more drugs than anyone else on earth and is unusual, undesirable, and unaware of anything she does!! I must say it again, I don’t see how Uma Thurman made this list? I personally think she is very classy, very charming, very talented, and of course very beautiful!
135. GateTree - March 9th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Cate Blanchett is a great choice, but she’s famous for playing Elizabeth I. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000949/
136. Cubone - April 10th, 2008 at 7:38 am
I think Hillary Swank should be on the list.
137. Qlovelee - April 10th, 2008 at 8:06 am
I agree with Hillary Swank.
138. Scubaguy - May 26th, 2008 at 6:07 am
I’ve met Ann Coulter at a book signing and she is beautiful. Way more beautiful than in any photo or anywhere you’ve seen her on TV. She’s got a much softer, sweeter “girl next door” look in person. She is incredibly good looking.
139. Draya - May 26th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
What? No Tilda Swinton?
And Amy Winehouse is drug addict/alcoholic who’s pissing away her looks and her talent. She’s not beautiful, she’s pathetic.
That picture is at least 5 years old.
140. astraya - May 27th, 2008 at 5:28 am
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And sometimes also in the eye of the beer holder.

A lonnggg nose.

Beautiful? Uh,….NO! Only #4 & #10 are beautiful.
145. dionysos2012 - July 21st, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Despite the fact that I’m gay, I must comment on the inclusion of Ann Coulter - not only is she a braying, self-absorbed maniac with a highly annoying voice that carries pretension in every word, but physically she is equally repulsive. She looks like an anorexic/bulemic horse with bad hair and the fashion sense of a third rate stripper.
I suppose I do have a bias against her, but, for the most part, it has nothing to do with her politics - I just can’t stand ignorance promulgated in a condescending tone and people so crass that their every word is intended to shock and awe in order to sell outrageous misinformation in the form of poorly written “books”.
Have you ever known somebody that you initially didn’t think of as beautiful but once you truly knew them they became gorgeous?
Though I don’t know the b**ch, her idiocy only increases her ugliness in my eyes.
What about Laura Dern, Amy Sedaris, Chloe Sevigny, Hilary Swank, Maggie Gyllenhall, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tilda Swinton, Bjork, Janis Joplin (though she has been dead for over thirty years and might not look so hot), Sarah Jessica Parker, or Gena Malone? I know you are limited by the constraints of the list, but I think any one of these ladies deserves to be in the top 10 more than Coulter.
146. LikesDistinctiveWomen - August 8th, 2008 at 6:06 am
I am surprised nobody has seen fit to comment on Minnie Driver. Yes she has high and very wide cheekbones. Yes she has a jawline most men would be happy with. Most definitely yes she has a complete absence of conventional beauty, but there is a difference between being beautiful and being attractive. Personally I find Minnie Driver very attractive. She is someone you could see in the streets and recognize. She is distinctive looking and is unlikely to ever be mistaken for someone else and THAT attracts me.
As for Angelina Jolie, well yes she has large lips and a wide mouth but she is “attractive” rather than beautiful, although she is a bit skinny nowadays.
p.s. Who is this Tilda Swinton people keep mentioning? I never heard of her.
