No person today has seen a living woolly mammoth. And unless a big tech company produces a clone, nobody ever will. But extinction did not shut the door on every elusive creature. Once in a while, one pops up and poses for a photograph.
Some are huge, like the ghost elephants that survived decades of conflict in Angola. Others roamed remote forests for generations before surrendering their first photographs, such as a dwarf fox discovered beside a highway and an egg-laying mammal named after David Attenborough.
Persistent researchers use sniffer dogs, environmental DNA, and camera traps to confirm that elusive animals still survive, while accidental discoveries can provide answers too. From a food market selling rodents related to a family missing from the fossil record for 11 million years to New Guinea “fossils” that were very much alive, here are ten second chances to see some of the world’s least-seen animals.

10 The Rusty Lark: Missing Since 1931
Larks are songbirds found across Africa, Europe, and Asia. But one species disappeared so thoroughly that nearly a century passed without another confirmed record.
In 1931, naturalist George Latimer Bates collected specimens of the rusty lark (Calendulauda rufa) in what is now Niger. Those museum specimens became the last reliable evidence that the tawny little bird still existed.
In February 2026, French ornithologists Pierre Defos du Rau and Julien Birard traveled through Chad with conservationist Idriss Dapsia. During their work in the Abou Telfane Wildlife Reserve in Guéra Province, they hoped to find another elusive bird, the Kordofan rufous sparrow.
While Birard was observing a Horsfield’s bush lark, several Kordofan sparrows appeared nearby. By the time he grabbed his camera and recording equipment, the sparrows had flown. But another unfamiliar bird remained, decked out in shades of brown, rust, and white.
Birard knew it was a lark and took photographs and recordings. Only later did the team realize what they had found: the missing rusty lark.
Specialists compared the images, plumage, and vocalizations with historical descriptions and museum material. The evidence confirmed the bird’s identity, ending a 94-year absence from the scientific record. The photographs also became the first known images of the species alive.
The bird the team wanted had flown away.
The one that stayed had been missing since 1931.[1]
9 The Mountain Bongo: Reappeared in a Kenyan Forest
One of Africa’s rarest large mammals is the mountain bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci). Captive breeding programs care for hundreds of these critically endangered antelopes, but only a tiny and fragmented population survives in the wild.
Mountain bongos are found only in Kenya. Their best-known stronghold lies in the Aberdare Range, but smaller populations have historically occupied several other mountain forests.
One of those places was the Maasai Mau Forest, approximately 125 miles (201 kilometers) from the Aberdares. No confirmed camera-trap record had emerged from the forest since 2018, and conservationists feared that the local population might have vanished.
The Mountain Bongo Project was not ready to give up. Working with community members and local trackers, the group installed camera traps in places where the elusive antelopes might still be moving.
In December 2025, one of those cameras photographed a young male mountain bongo. The image, recovered the following month, provided the first confirmed camera-trap evidence from Maasai Mau in seven years.
Then more bongos appeared.
Subsequent images captured several individuals, including adult and younger males and a female. The photographs suggested that a small surviving population had remained hidden in the forest.
That does not mean the bongos are safe. Maasai Mau faces illegal logging, livestock grazing, and habitat fragmentation. Unlike animals in Kenya’s national parks, those in Maasai Mau must survive in a forest divided among multiple forms of ownership and management.
Still, you cannot protect an animal until you know it is there.
The cameras proved that Maasai Mau’s bongos had not vanished. They had simply become very good at avoiding everyone.[2]
8 Attenborough’s Echidna: Found on the Final Memory Card
Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna (Zaglossus attenboroughi) looks like several animals assembled by a committee. It has the spines of a hedgehog, the snout of an anteater, and the digging feet of a mole. It also lays eggs because, apparently, it wasn’t unusual enough already.
The critically endangered mammal is named after naturalist Sir David Attenborough and belongs to the monotremes, the ancient group of egg-laying mammals that also includes the platypus.
Science knew the species primarily from a single specimen collected in 1961 in the Cyclops Mountains of Indonesian New Guinea. Although Indigenous communities later reported that long-beaked echidnas still lived in the mountains, researchers lacked photographic confirmation.
More than six decades after the specimen was collected, an international expedition returned to search for the animal. The project combined Indigenous and local knowledge with modern camera trapping. Researchers conducted community surveys to identify likely habitat and then carried more than 80 cameras into the steep tropical forest.
For almost the entire expedition, the cameras recorded nothing conclusive.
The team spent four weeks in the mountains, repeatedly climbing through difficult terrain and gaining a combined elevation greater than Mount Everest’s height. When they retrieved the last cameras, their chances appeared to be disappearing with them.
Then came the final memory card.
Its last images showed Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna walking through the forest. The cameras had captured the first known photographs and video footage of the species, confirming its survival after 62 years without a scientific record.
The echidna waited until the last possible moment to appear.
Apparently, it understands dramatic timing as well as its namesake.[3]
7 The Goblin Shark: Finally Filmed in the Deep
The goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) belongs to a lineage extending back approximately 125 million years. But scientists didn’t describe the modern species until 1898, mostly from sharks caught accidentally by fishermen.
Studying these predators in their natural habitat was extremely difficult. The species lives thousands of feet below the surface in darkness—not the most accessible place for humans.
Then researchers found footage of two.
The first observation occurred in 2019, when a remotely operated vehicle filmed a goblin shark near a seamount close to Jarvis Island in the Central Pacific. The significance of that footage was not fully recognized until researchers examined it years later.
The second shark appeared in 2024 on a baited camera deployed along the slope of the Tonga Trench. After more than 50 days of continuous deep-sea recordings, the goblin shark drifted into view for approximately 20 seconds.
The brief visit was enough to break records.
The Tonga shark appeared at a depth of approximately 6,550 feet (1,997 meters), about 2,300 feet (700 meters) deeper than any previous goblin shark record. It also extended the documented depth range of lamniform sharks—the group that includes great whites, makos, and goblin sharks—by approximately 354 feet (108 meters).
Together, the two observations considerably expanded the species’ known geographic and depth ranges. They also became the first confirmed footage of live goblin sharks swimming freely in their natural deep-sea habitat.
After more than a century of studying specimens dragged to the surface, scientists finally saw the goblin shark where it belonged.
It gave them about 20 seconds.[4]
6 De Winton’s Golden Mole: Underground Since 1937
The last confirmed record of De Winton’s golden mole (Cryptochloris wintoni) occurred in 1937. The mammal’s known territory centered on the coastal dunes near Port Nolloth, South Africa, where it “swam” through loose sand instead of moving through permanent tunnels.
Despite its name, the animal is not a bright gold nugget with feet. Its dense coat is slate gray with yellowish or bronze tones, although microscopic structures in the hairs can produce an iridescent sheen.
Decades passed, and the species was feared extinct. Then, in 2021, researchers brought in a specially trained border collie named Jessie to help search for it.
There was one problem: Nobody had fresh De Winton’s golden mole scent available for dog training.
Instead, Jessie learned to identify other golden moles living along the coast, including Grant’s golden mole (Eremitalpa granti) and the Cape golden mole (Chrysochloris asiatica). When she ignored fresh subsurface trails in promising habitat, researchers knew that an unfamiliar species might have made them.
The dog could narrow the possibilities, but environmental DNA provided the stronger evidence. Researchers collected soil from the animals’ trails and burrows, then analyzed the genetic material left behind. The samples revealed four golden mole species: the two familiar species, the endangered Van Zyl’s golden mole (Cryptochloris zyli), and De Winton’s golden mole.
DNA from a museum specimen helped confirm the identification.
Later fieldwork produced photographs and video of live animals, while additional environmental DNA revealed four more populations along South Africa’s west coast. De Winton’s golden mole was not only alive but apparently more widely distributed than scientists had realized.
The moles remain clueless about all the attention.
They are blind.[5]
5 The Laotian Rock Rat Revived an “Extinct” Family
When the Laotian rock rat was discovered, it was not a cute moment. In 1996, biologist Robert Timmins found several dead specimens being sold for food at a market in Thakhek, Laos.
Two years later, researchers acquired more remains from local villagers, including skulls, jaws, and fragments recovered from an owl pellet. Villagers also supplied photographs, and one young boy was seen casually holding a living animal beside the road.
Clearly, this creature was not rare enough to surprise the people who lived alongside it. Science, however, had no idea what it was.
In 2005, researchers formally described the Laotian rock rat (Laonastes aenigmamus). The rodent appeared so different from every known living species that they placed it in an entirely new family called Laonastidae.
Then another group of scientists looked at its skull and noticed something strange.
The rock rat closely resembled Diatomyidae, an ancient rodent family known only from fossils. The most recent fossils were approximately 11 million years old, leading paleontologists to believe the entire group had vanished during the Miocene Epoch.
Further anatomical and genetic research supported the connection. The Laotian rock rat was not a member of a newly evolved family after all. It was the sole known survivor of one that had been missing from the fossil record for millions of years.
In 2006, researchers captured, photographed, and filmed a living specimen in Laos. The footage showed a dark, furry rodent with a thick tail and an unusual waddling gait. Despite its common name, it is not a true rat and lacks the nimble movements associated with most rodents.
Scientists searched museums and fossil beds for an extinct family.
Meanwhile, people in Laos were selling its surviving relative for dinner.[6]
4 Angola’s Ghost Elephants: Decades in Hiding
In 1975, civil war broke out in Angola. The conflict continued for 27 years, devastating the country’s wildlife along with its human population.
Elephants were killed for ivory and food, displaced from their habitats, and sometimes caught in areas littered with land mines. By the time the war ended in 2002, Angola’s once-vast elephant population had collapsed.
But not every elephant disappeared.
Local communities continued to report enormous elephants living in the remote highlands of eastern Angola. Researchers found footprints, dung, feeding marks, and other signs, but the animals themselves proved remarkably difficult to see. They moved mainly at night and avoided people so successfully that they became known as Angola’s “ghost elephants.”
Conservation biologist Steve Boyes spent more than a decade trying to document them. The search covered the Lisima landscape, a vast region of high-altitude wetlands, forests, and rivers. Local knowledge eventually helped his team narrow its attention to an area near Cangamba.
In 2024, a motion-activated camera finally photographed one of the elephants.
The dark nighttime image showed a massive animal standing in tall vegetation, its eyes glowing in the camera’s light. After years of indirect evidence, one of Angola’s ghosts had stepped in front of a lens.
But the picture raised another question: Who were these elephants?
Boyes collected dung and sent it to Stanford University, where researchers extracted and sequenced the elephants’ DNA. The results showed that the highland animals formed a genetically distinctive population unlike any previously sequenced. Their closest known relatives lived hundreds of miles to the south in Namibia rather than in the nearby Okavango Delta of Botswana.
That does not prove the ghost elephants originated in Namibia. Limited genetic data from wild African elephants still leave gaps in their history.
For decades, researchers wondered whether the elephants existed.
Now they know the answer—and have an entirely new mystery to solve.[7]
3 The Cozumel Fox: First Photographed in 2023
Cozumel Island, off Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, has its own population of unusually small gray foxes. Archaeological remains prove that the animals have lived there for centuries, but science still has not formally described or named them as a separate species.
That is partly because the Cozumel fox (Urocyon sp.) is extraordinarily difficult to find.
The last reliable sighting occurred in 2001. More than two decades passed without another confirmed record, raising fears that the island’s dwarf fox had quietly disappeared.
Then, on September 14, 2023, Rafael Chacón spotted an unfamiliar animal near kilometer 29 of Cozumel’s coastal highway. He photographed it and uploaded the image to iNaturalist.
It became the first known photograph of a Cozumel fox.
The picture shows a small adult male with large ears, dark fur along its back, and a long, bushy tail. Personnel from the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel captured the animal, assessed its health, and released it.
The photograph confirmed that the fox still survives, but almost everything else remains uncertain. Scientists do not know how many are left, precisely where they live, or how much habitat they require. Available evidence suggests their distribution may be limited to southern Cozumel.
Development, vehicles, disease, and introduced predators such as feral dogs and cats could all threaten the remaining population. Researchers believe the fox is likely critically endangered, but its undescribed status and the lack of population data make conservation difficult.
The good news is that the fox is still there.
The bad news is that one photograph may represent a dangerously large percentage of everything science knows about it.[8]
2 A Blurry Photograph Led to a New Monkey Species
African colobus monkeys are famous for an odd feature: Their thumbs are reduced to tiny bumps or missing entirely. This helps them swing rapidly through forest canopies, although it seems like a questionable design choice for an animal that spends its life gripping branches.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, local communities occasionally reported a dark monkey they called the “Likweli.” The animal lived in a remote stretch of rainforest between the Lomami and Congo rivers and was rarely seen even by people living near its limited range.
In 2008, conservationists Bernard Ikembelo and Ashley Vosper obtained the first photograph of the mysterious primate.
Unfortunately, it was blurry.
The image suggested that something unusual was living in the forest, but one indistinct photograph could not establish an entirely new species. Researchers needed clearer images, physical comparisons, recordings, and genetic evidence.
A decade later, another survey produced a much better photograph. Between 2018 and 2022, field teams recorded 114 detections of the monkey. Eighty-nine included visual observations, while the remainder involved its distinctive vocalizations, sometimes accompanied by only a brief glimpse.
The accumulated evidence revealed a new species: Colobus congoensis.
The Likweli has glossy black fur, high cheekbones, pinkish-orange lips, and a face framed by spiky hair. Its deep roaring calls differ from those of related species. Genetic evidence indicates that its lineage separated from that of its closest living relative, the black colobus (Colobus satanas), approximately four to five million years ago.
Its known range covers only about 656 square miles (1,700 square kilometers), and researchers have recommended listing it as Endangered because of hunting and habitat loss.
The Likweli was never lost to the people who knew its forest.
Science just needed nearly 20 years to turn one blurry photograph into a species.[9]
1 Two New Guinea Marsupials Returned from the Fossil Record
The pygmy long-fingered possum (Dactylonax kambuayai) and ring-tailed glider (Tous ayamaruensis) had something unfortunate in common: Scientists knew them primarily from fossils dating back thousands of years.
Then researchers found both animals alive in the rainforests of New Guinea’s Vogelkop Peninsula.
The pygmy long-fingered possum was formally described in 1999 from fossil remains. It appeared to have vanished from the record around 6,000 years ago. But one modern specimen had already been collected in 1992 and placed in the Australian Museum, where it was misidentified as a different species.
Researchers eventually recognized the mistake. Additional specimens, photographs, and sightings confirmed that the tiny striped marsupial still survived in lowland forest. One of its fingers is twice as long as the next-longest digit, allowing it to probe rotting wood for insect larvae.
The ring-tailed glider followed a different path back from extinction.
Fossils showed that its relatives once lived in Australia and New Guinea during the Pleistocene and early Holocene. But living gliders known to Indigenous communities in the Vogelkop Peninsula eventually proved to belong to that seemingly vanished lineage.
Photographs, living specimens, and fossil comparisons revealed not only a surviving species but an entirely new genus, Tous—the first new genus of New Guinean marsupial described since 1937. The small glider has large eyes, relatively bare ears, and a powerful grasping tail. It is also culturally significant to Tambrauw and Maybrat communities, whose knowledge helped bring it to scientific attention.
The discoveries offer evidence of the Vogelkop Peninsula’s ancient connection to Australia and demonstrate how isolated rainforests can preserve evolutionary lineages long after they disappear elsewhere.
Finding one animal known only from fossils would have been extraordinary.
New Guinea had two of them hiding in the same forest.[10]
