With Halloween right around the corner, you’re going to need an endless stash of horror movies to make sure your nerves stay shot straight though the Day of the Dead, itself. Given that a lot of horror fanatics have written for Listverse over the years, there is plenty of reference material to keep that scare-pantry stocked. Here are the top ten lists about horror movies, which you can rifle through as you keep that rifle handy.

This list, published in June 2009, by “cdnnknght” offers some tips for those who find themselves often trapped in horror movie scenarios. A terse read and a checklist-of-sorts, this list is an amusing note of what most characters fail to do right before they die. Take a look.
Compiling 15 of the best lycanthropic movies of all time, and rarely leaving one out, this list from November 2007 is a handy one to refer to around Halloween time. Plenty of full-moon transformations and feral woods-play can be seen in any one of those mentioned, and special props to those in which prosthetic make-up and tedious still-shooting account for making a beast out of a man. You might recognize a scene from number 10, In the Company of Wolves, from your local costume emporium, via the famous mask of a wolf snout coming out of the man’s mouth. Read on for other hairy examples of great horror film making.

Any movie list is subjective, but this one does a good job at taking in the grander scope of the horror genre, from Steven King to slashers to Japanese squeamfest to Hitchcock. The Shining gets number one, which is logical: top notch director (Stanley Kubrick), top notch actor (Jack Nicholson), based on, arguably, the most identifiable work of a top notch horror writer (Steven King). Usually Psycho gets the top spot, but at least it’s only two spots away. Check out the list of this particular author’s top ten horror films here, published in September 2007.
Jessica Mauger came up with a list of shocking movies that are NOT banned, and that are available in particular at her local DVD store. Bullet-pointed are some notorious familiars of the shock variety (Hostel II, The Hills Have Eyes and The Human Centipede at number one) and a few lesser-known and foreign films that are guaranteed cringe-inducers, with Irreversible and Seed as high-ranking contenders. If you like the feeling of having nerve-endings strangle your stomach-lining, take a gander at the films mentioned in the author’s list, published January 2011.

Shane Dayton’s list throws together a slab of this author’s favorite bloodsuckers. It should be noted that four of them are based upon Bram Stoker’s Dracula (one is a Mel Brooks film), but the Bela Legosi-starring Universal Studios classic is left off. Interestingly, this list doesn’t just look at vampires as being horror icons: they can also show up in action and comedies. Take a look at this list, published April 2008.
This list, published in July 2009, by Colin H., presents a recap of some of the decade’s best, if not best-recognized, horror flicks. On it is Ginger Snaps, Final Destination, Saw, Hard Candy and Ju-On, as well as a host of films that were better than that which you ever heard about them. Read the list, make a few discoveries and see why Inside got number one (and perhaps why you should go look it up).
This list, by Elizabeth Kelly, compiles a handful of obscure horror flicks that have surely crept by the attention of the general public – and what a shame. The list offers a breakdown on a whole repertoire of movies that the author stresses should be added to the Halloween rotation cycle, including the likes of Jacob’s Ladder; Alice, Sweet Alice; Night of the Creeps; and Paperhouse, at number one (you’ll have to see it for yourself to fully understand why). Check out the list, which was published in June 2010, here.
Author “Randall” defines “Hammer” as being “a name synonymous with lush, Gothic horror with a very British tint.” This list, from October of 2009, compiles a 13-item collection of such so-called Hammer films, from the author’s extensive stash, taking a tour through “very British” takes on Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy (at number one) and Phantom of the Opera. You might just spill your tea in terror upon watching any of the entries. Take a look at which smashing Hammers made the cut and why.

You most probably only know a J-Horror film through its American adaptation, but what better way to get to the heart of the darkness than to go straight to the source: Japan. This list, by Jackie Huff, from January 2008, compiles a list of the ten best (i.e. skin-crawling) horror films from across the Pacific. Yes, the original inspirations for The Grudge and The Ring claim the second and first spots respectively, but the rest are reason to pay more attention to what’s happening in Japan, and why imported films will immensely improve the condition of your horror collection. Take a look.

This list, by Shane Dayton, from February 2008, takes a look at some of the best psychos in film, without mentioning the obvious Norman Bates. Mentioned are Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector, Christian Bale from American Psycho and even Macaulay Culkin in little boy form. That and a good number of entries you will have to see for yourself, after thanking the author for enlightening you. A varied list of crazies, and we know how varied crazy can be. Check it out.

A lists about lists? What is this?
listception
Damnit you beat me too it.
Listception? wait….I see what you did there. Very clever indeed, you took the word inception and replaced the ‘in’ with ‘list’.
It is also possible that “zxcv” cleverly took the word reception and replaced the ‘re’ with ‘list’.
Or maybe “deception”.
what about “exception”…??
Yo dawg, i heard you like lists.
Granted, a list about previous lists was long overdue for a new one. I think this is the first new one I’ve seen since I joined in July 2008.
hmmm….not a bad list, but a strange approach nonetheless…
What comes next? A list that lists the best lists about other lists?
japanese Horror
<3
good concept for a list but i can already guess people will hate this…to many horror films and imo the horror genre is the most split in terms of personal opinions so your going to get a few complaints if people favs are not on here.
Horror is easily my fav genre, saw number 8 and the title picture for Ringu on there…nearly wet myself in excitment! Freaking love that film
disappointing list today
Let’s go slowly discouraged, we’ll burn the pictures instead
When it’s all over we can barely discuss
For one minute only, not with the fortunate only
Thought it could have been something else
These days it comes, it comes, it comes, it comes, it comes and goes
Listomania
Think less but see it grow like a riot, like a riot, oh I’m not easily offended
It’s not hard to let it go from a mess to the masses
Listomania
That’s Lizst-omania. About the composer. Nice try tho…
a top 10 list about other top 10 lists….ummmm i could have just looked at old ones. not trying to be a dick…but this makes no sense to me at all.
Definitely an off-kilter list. I have an affinity for the Hammer Horror franchise (RIP Jimmy Sangster).
Actually enjoyed this ‘list of lists’. It helped me catch up on the genre from popular to lesser known films in a kind of category-based form – nicely done. I also think that the horror genre can use a bit more tweaking to describe the subgenres (which this list does to an extent).
For example, the ‘Disturbing List’ is a kind of new entrant in this field (as far as I know). I’ve never watched any of the films listed and didn’t realize until now that I actually avoid these types of films. The kind of suffering involved from a sadistic perspective (even if it’s revenge) leaves little room for escapist viewing or even hope.
I like a horror list close to holloween, but a horror list about old horror lists is not that AYOBA…. It would have been nicer to have a original list, instead of you just scrolling through listverse archives and having your say about each pick… =(
Some one got lazy….;)
I’m sorry I don’t like to diss listverse but this is not one of it’s best by a long way. How many lists are there of horror films on this website? When I read the title I actually thought this could be about other lists on the Internet that I haven’t read.
10 rare flowers and now THIS? Oh come on.
ATTENTION ALL LISTVERSE-ERS!!! From now on, before you submit a list you must email everyone who reads this site to see if they like the list topic and if even ONE person doesn’t like it, then don’t submit it! Apparently it’s SUCH a travesty to see what the list of the day is only to see that it’s a subject that doesn’t interest you! Never mind the fact that other people might not like it.
*grumble,grumble* sheesh!
I don’t think the issue is that people don’t like the subject, infact if you do like the subject then you have probably already read the lists mentioned.
It’s like when one of your favourite TV shows that you look forward to watching does a clip show.
I will start an original list tonight that I have been toying with and hope people like it. Watch this space!
Dude, it’s the comments section; let people voice their opinions.
So…..alot of you are complaining about getting another list to read even if it doesn’t affect your life in the slightest? Make your own list so you can complain to yourself! Geez ungrateful and spoilt much?
Agreed! Bunch of babies.
Nice
So…a list about lists….I’m actually for it. Nice, neat and tidy. Everything compacted into one. Makes it easy. My only complaint would be to have a regular list posted and one like this above to be a bonus list. 2 for the price of 1.
Nice job.
Why do people watch horror movies? I have watched a few. I find them so boring. What, if anything, am I missing?
Maybe you lack imagination? Or willing suspension of disbelief?
A soul – that’s what you’re missing.
Becaue a good horror movie is just about the best movie. That’s why.
Why? What do you get out of it?
I am way too skeptical now to fully enjoy horror flicks. even the gross-out factor has little effect on me (I am a CVT in animal emergency care so real life is often grosser than fiction)
I like them because they make me laugh, they make me a bit squeamish, and I love a good lycanthrope.
aspicco, maybe I can recommend this Stephen King’s book to you: “Danse Macabre: The Anatomy of Horror”. Maybe Mr.King can explain better than I could why people like horror films and books.
The same reason some people enjoy romance and drama. I like horror because of the thrill of being scared out of my wits, along with the suspence and thrill of a good well made slasher movie and I like the terror of a haunted house film.
I can’t sit and watch these disturbing movies like Serbian film and Salo etc. I like to have some entertainment rather than be completely grossed out or shocked for the sake of it. Not for me. If you really cannot find enjoyment out of a horror (not even a horror comedy?!?!) then that’s your business. I can’t find any entertainment out of a rom-com so each to their own.
I don’t really like the idea of a list about lists. I’ve been reading this site for a while and I went back and read a substantial portion of the archives, so I’m already familiar with most, if not all of these lists. I’d much rather see lists with new material.
Unlike 90% of the commenters (commentators? whatever) I actually enjoyed this list. I love lists about lists and I love lists about movies. So this is a two in one for me. The only downside was reading all the *****ing and moaning in the comments.
Nice try, but I really don’t need a list that reminds me of previous lists. I can simply go to the categories and check the lists I want to go back to.
I knew metalists would come eventually.
i am surprised the original version of “The Haunting” is not on any list. it is the only movie that ever scared me, mostly because you don’t really ever see anything; it is all power of suggestion by getting inside the characters’ heads, especially the lead played by Julie Harris. i have goosebumps just thinking about it…
mike, I agree about the movie version of {“The Haunting.” It is one really scary movie. But I found the Shirley Jackson novel it was based on to be even more powerful. I think it is one of the finest novels ever written in English.
Shirley Jackson was one *scary* writer. I have read, I believe, all of her stuff, short stories and novels, and they never fail to send shivers down my spine. Try The Lottery. Try We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
+shiver+
…sigh…
I agree with oouchan – should have been a bonus list a little closer to Halloween. I do love me some twofers. This is more like a 1/2er.
Man, where did the old listverse fans go?? The ones who wouldn’t bit*h so much! Geesh!….. anyway….. Good list! I enjoyed it!
They probably went to the same place the old Listverse went.
I didn’t think lists about lists were allowed… guess I was wrong!
I rckoened I’d view at as which would be the worst way to die? I rckoened that Michael is a pretty efficient killer and part of that is that many of victims simply don’t see him coming. Stab, dead. End of story. What’s much worse is 28 days later where even close friends and family will hunt you if they are infected. Where you have to live an isolated life barely able to trust anyone and knowing that civillisation has collapsed around you. And if they catch you, you’ll have a long time as a violent rage monster puking blood to look forward to. Ewww.
still here…..nice compact reference list.
Utter *****e
Recursive Lists do it to themselves!
OKAY. Randall is here. Now listen up.
In the first place, there is NO problem with a list like this, since it serves the purpose of RECALLING for us some of the previous lists on the site which are related to the upcoming holiday (Halloween). Yes, sure, you could go look through the archives yourself, but what’s wrong with someone picking their own favorites and doing the research for us? I DO agree that a list like this would be better presented as an ADDENDUM, so that we’d have TWO lists in one day—an original, and then this one. But that’s Jamie’s decision. In the meantime, who cares? There’ll be a new list tomorrow.
But as the writer of one of these lists (The Hammer Films list) I’m happy to see my list recalled so that people can re-read it.
NOW…. since Halloween is my favorite holiday—and since I have been away from Listverse for far too long…. I’ll go and write a new list or two dealing with classic horror films.
I can hardly wait – both for your renewed participation and the new lists. Woohoo!
ps: 10 Best Vincent Price vehicles?
RANDALL!
Yay! Write a horrifically delectable list for the approaching Eve of Hallows.
That and if it’s good I’ll send you a pic of me in my costume…
I don’t work quid pro quo. Send the pics anyway.
My parents didnt lalery have any interest until was probably like 11 but they wouldnt of cared before then my parents didnt try to getting. My parents never cared before then my parents never cared before then my parents didnt scar me from movies at and no it didnt lalery have any interest until was probably like 11 but they wouldnt of cared wasnt prone to getting. My parents never cared wasnt prone to protect me for life.My parents never cared wasnt prone to protect me from movies or anything watched pg18 movies.
Shut up Randall, no one likes you anyway . . . so . . . there . . .
Wow, it’s like a mini-LV reunion… now if only Segue, Flamehorse, Blogball, and Kreature would comment it would be a Halloween miracle!
I have no problem praying to the Halloween gods. I’ll say a few words (and not the &%#*usual ones) whilst carving my pumpkin.
Goddammit I missed you, you *&%$@#.
Well why don’t you cry about it?
Yay! Can’t wait to read it. And you need to participate more. Please!
this list is like a cheesy recap episode
i can never get human centipede out of my mind just as soon as i do somebody brings it up
omg i hate that. worst movie concept ever.
So basically this is a top 10 list about other lists ?
The movie ”The Lost Boys” reminds me of my childhood , lol good times
Hey! Good oh! Two of my friends wrote Lost Boys…that shouldn’t remind *anyone* of their childhood
Japan has the most amazing minds in the world. Really their ideas are out of this world. I wonder why are the Japanese so creative people?
I’d like to say that there’s more to Oriental horror besides Japan. There’s K-horror (Into the Mirror, Oldboy, I Saw the Devil, Tell Me Something, Whispering Corridors series), HK horror (Ebola Syndrome, The Eye), Thai horror (13 Beloved, Coming Soon, Shutter), etc. Good list of lists, though, for a horror fan.
um…lazy!
LAZY list today.
People griping about a list of lists forget that not everyone who visored this website have been long time visitors. I, and I assume others, are pretty new to this site, and I have not checked out all of these lists, so I really appreciate it.
Here’s another great tip: Use the archive, it’s like this list, but not limited to ten!
These lists are supposed to be informative in an easy to read way. How lazy do you have to be to make this list! I didn’t learn anything from this, I wasted my time, and so did you. Seriously, why did you think it was worth posting this list? Or is there just a criteria that has to be met, release X amount of lists per week? I’d choose one good list a month over having to see another list about lists.
I haven’t been here since the middle of the month…it’s seems the only thing I’ve missed are the adverts.
What an amazing coincidence. We didn’t miss you either.
When Jamie did a list of the Ten Best Listverse Lists, people didn’t seem to mind it. That’s been a while. It was time for another metalist.
And this is just opinion, but, to paraphrase Will Rogers: I never metalist I didn’t like.
LIsts within LIsts!
I’m going to go through all the lists and make a list of commentators who whine about others’ lists, listing their finest list-complaints.
They run out of lists to post… lol
Silence of the Lambs is a psychological thriller. Not a horror flick.
I think it’s both a psychological thriller and a horror flick.
good but old movies
“A Serbian film” should be in this list.
Oh my goodness! Incredible article dude! Thank you, However I am going through troubles with your RSS. I don’t understand why I cannot subscribe to it. Is there anyone else getting the same RSS issues? Anybody who knows the answer will you kindly respond? Thanks!!
i scared
