15 Incredible Japanese Show Videos
Published on April 25, 2008 - 101 Comments
Within the overpopulated world of Viral videos, a unique breed of shorts stands out of the landscape like a magnificent Mount Fuji of awesomeness. Japanese show videos are the cream of the crop in hilarious, amazing, and all-out wacky scenes caught on camera. These videos provide short but oh-so-gratifying pieces of Japanese TV goodness, and prove that Japanese television is light-years ahead of our time.
There’s something very relaxing about a spa on top of a snowy mountain… except when a prank show rigs the spa house for the visitors to ‘enjoy’ an insane ride on their relaxation chairs. Some of the best dokkiri (hidden camera pranks) available on the Net.
This is what happens when you have kids watching Anime from very young. They only want to learn from cute cartoon animals and… things that should not be considered cute at all. One of those viral videos that made us westerners raise an eyebrow and laugh our asses off.
This clip, as well as several others, come from “Kasou Taishou”, a semi-annual talent show that showcases acts by amateur performers (called ‘Human Art’ by some), rated by a panel of judges. You have to see these acts to understand just how impressive they get to be. The creativity of the artists performing in this and other acts is uncanny, as you’ll soon discover. Here we have a trip underwater as seen from behind the goggles of a scuba diver…
For those who don’t already know, the movie “The Ring” is a remake of the immensely popular japanese movie “Ringu”, which made the J-Horror movie genre incredibly popular worldwide. So if you think “the video” that curses people to die in seven days is popular in the west, you can’t imagine how popular it is among the Japanese… and that includes cute innocent Japanese girls. In other words, this prank is every Japanese girl’s worst nightmare come true.
If bizarre is what you want in your viral videos, look no further. An insane English lesson that became very popular in viral video outlets. This video made many a westerner think, “is this really how crazy Japanese are?” and made the cultural gap a laughing matter. Possibly the joke’s on us, because the makers of this skit probably knew how ridiculous this premise was, and intentionally provided an ironic view of Japanese culture; something that got lost on many who watched this segment overseas.
A very cute Kasou Taishou performance with a cool twist at the end. It starts off pretty unimpressive… apparently. I thought you’d learned by now not to underestimate Japanese shows…
An impressive and even touching act. Yet another gem from Kasou Taishou.
A compilation of random pranks with a quirky Japanese twist. You won’t be disappointed.
The popular painting by Katsushika Hokusai meets the ingenious mind of Salvador Dali in this Kasou Taishou act. Impressive artistic prowess in motion.
One of the most famous Japanese videos of the Viral age. The nasty things these poor fellas go through… and they have to keep quiet while at it! Only one of the many hilarious segments from the variety comedy show “Gaki No Tsukai”.
I think the title pretty much says it all. Japanese prank madness at its finest.
This is one of the most impressive displays of “human kabuki theatre” in an act from Kasou Taishou. It can be accurately described as ‘A Matrix food fight’.
A hilarious and very original game, proving that ‘Game shows’ in Japan are way beyond what ‘game shows’ in the West are considered to be. This is only the tip of the iceberg of how wacky and funny game shows get over there. If you search ‘Japanese game show’ on YouTube, many other games with ostentatious amounts of zaniness await. And if you want more ‘human tetris’, use those search words on YouTube and you’ll find even more segments from this game show.
Amazing. You will be thoroughly impressed by the complexity of the act, and the skill of these performers.
The video that started it all. An action-packed ping pong match that changed the landscape of viral videos forever. I remember how watching the ‘cinematic’ effects in this one literally took my breath away. This short but amazing act made millions around the world drop their jaws in utter awe and admiration, and opened the golden gates to the wonderful world of Japanese show viral videos. The rest is history.

Yes, Silent Library (#6) is my favourite show ever! I absolutely love the shit Japanese people do to each other!
And #5 I love too! I’ve seen most of these before, but it’s always great to have new ones!
For the English lesson one, this is awesome too:

jfrater: I had my own little dawn service in the middle of my host family’s garden… The think I’m strange now (like they needed any more proof), but it was worth it for the Aussie/Kiwi pride. I’m going to make me some Anzac biccies now!

Maybe I’ll use this in my next English classes next week!

Great Job Keatchure! Wonderful compilation.
I am in agreement; #11 English Lesson lampoons our culture and our perception of Japanese culture. Very Clever.
I think it safe to assume that the Japanese do not suffer the sue-happy environment that exists in North America. I am rather jealous of their relaxed attitude towards nudity and bodily functions as well.
The performance art is wonderful. How to convey so much with so little. Puts CGI in its proper place.
10. Mom424 - April 25th, 2008 at 7:24 am
Jfrater, Kiwiboi, Carpe_Noctem et al;
I will add a splash of rum to my coffee this morning and be thinking of you guys.
Jeffreygvl; It doesn’t matter that you have seen these before; they represent the best of the genre, are presented in a cohesive, intelligent, and very entertaining manner. Provides an interesting over-view unavailable elsewhere.
11. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 7:33 am
Cool list, but “incredible” in another title? There are synonyms for “incredible” and “amazing!”
12. Phillies - April 25th, 2008 at 8:56 am
Hilarious. I love these! Great list!

I can’t see the videos, but there is a show from over there that the US over dubs with joke comments. In US its called Most Extreme Challenge.

Keatchure:
Yet another reason to love this site!
Viewing Japanese game show videos (in America, at work) is clearly the reason The Internet was created. The good humor (and lack of lawyerly influence) these videos exhibit should be a lesson to the rest of the world.
All (most) my favorites in one place…Thank You.
17. Bob - April 25th, 2008 at 9:51 am
Man, I wish YouTube weren’t blocked at work. These video lists always suck for me. :-/

stevenh “Viewing Japanese game show videos (in America, at work) is clearly the reason The Internet was created.”
Agreed! Unfortunately in a call center I can’t use sound, so a few I will have to save for later, but most I can get the idea well enough with no sound!
19. SlickWilly - April 25th, 2008 at 10:30 am
The Japanese are years ahead of us in entertainment. They are clearly the superior race.
20. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 10:54 am
“The Japanese are years ahead of us in entertainment. They are clearly the superior race.”
You’re damn right they are:
East Asians average higher on IQ tests than Whites, both in the U. S. and in Asia, even though IQ tests were developed for use in the Euro-American culture. Around the world, the average IQ for East Asians centers around 106; for Whites, about 100; and for Blacks about 85 in the U.S. and 70 in sub-Saharan Africa.

Hi all, thanks for the praise (for my list and Japanese people too, apparently
) and I’m glad you liked my choices. There’s plenty more crazy Japanese stuff out there on ‘teh interwebs’, so consider this list only an appetizer.
Is there a reason you keep calling me Keatchure? Weird!
Anyways, I guess this was a subtle change of pace from the usual ‘controversial’ lists and whatnot around here, even though they seem more popular.
Next time I make a comment on other lists that seems too serious or negative, please remember this list, because this kind of crazy and funny is almost always where my head’s at. Let’s all lighten up more often!
Oh, and
.
22. Christine - April 25th, 2008 at 11:17 am
That was HILARIOUS! Thanks Kreature for helping me pass the time at work with some giggles. I feel like those guys in the library trying to contain my laughter!!
23. SlickWilly - April 25th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Well, I was making a joke. But I question the article that cites those statistics. It has been removed from it’s original source, and I’m always a little weary of physiological scientific testing that draws a distinction between races, as scientifically we have proven that there is no such thing as physiological “race” as we colloquially refer to it. Secondly, unless I am mistaken, they did not state which IQ test was used, or the average age of the participants. This is problematic, since it has been shown that the standard Weshler and Stanford-Binet intelligence tests have faced severe scrutiny in the past for exhibiting a racial bias towards african-americans. In addition, the IQ test can only be “reliably” applied during the devlopmental years of a child’s life. Intelligence tends to level off as you get older. IQ tests measure your performance as compared to the performances of other kids at the same place in your development. If adults were used for this experiment, or even participants older than 12 or 13, the results could be very skewed.
Not to denigrate the Japanese. They are overall an extremely intelligent people. But their idea of entertainment is clearly superior to our own. Any country that can get away with blowjob competitions on prime-time TV just by barely obscurring the member with a little opaque dot is a good one in my book.
24. Christine - April 25th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Oops I spelled your name wrong. Thank you KREACHURE.
25. YogiBarrister - April 25th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Good list, this is funny stuff.
Rylan, I hate to clue you in, but IQ scores don’t mean one race is superior to another. Some races tend to have higher birthrates, some have better immune systems, better skin, denser bones and better muscular structure. Some cultures have higher emotional intelligence. The superior human race is the one that will endure the coming tribulations.
26. Mom424 - April 25th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
I too object to posting vague IQ references.
Those folks in Sub-saharan Africa are using their innate intelligence in order to keep breathing. Not learning how to take IQ tests.
The dog eat dog competitiveness of Japanese society; they begin training for said tests just about as soon as they begin to speak; also spawns ridiculously high suicide rates.
We’re not much different under the skin; the main difference is in our respective circumstances. There but for the grace of god go I.
27. SarahJ - April 25th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
My husband and I sat here at 1am watching and laughing at these and being amazed at the incredible art! Great list thanks Kreachure!
28. Kreachure - April 25th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
You’re quite welcome!
29. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Ha, you guys need to lighten up.
30. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
It hardly matters to me, but if you believe all races have the same level of intelligence, you’re pretty ignorant.
31. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
I’m going to stop now though since this isn’t an appropriate place to debate it, and political correctness prevents the issue from being discussed intelligently anyway.
32. Avi - April 25th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
i have the belief that all people around the world are equally retarded and only those who can point out that one race is better than another sticks out as even dumber than the rest of us monkeys. what makes the japanese great is their ability to poke fun and entertain each other with a smile on their face and a love for a good fun laugh.
33. Bob - April 25th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
“higher emotional intelligence”
What does that even mean? Sounds like some vague, made-up nonsense to me. New Age much?
34. SlickWilly - April 25th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Rylan: If it doesn’t matter to you, then why did you bring it up?
The fact of the matter is, the whole idea of “intelligence” is still controversial in modern scientific circles. There is not one, single consensus among psychologists as to what “intelligence” really means, which is why the IQ tests don’t measure someone’s “smarts”…they measure their mental performance in the context of their peers. If someone is bad at math, but good at languages, would you say they are smart or dumb? If someone does poorly in school but shows a natural talent for music, or auto-repair, would you say they were smart or dumb? The point is, the whole idea of “intelligence” is not as clear cut as you might think it is. Measuring people with completely different upbringings in completely different parts of the world, where different thought and behavior patterns exist and perspectives are radically different from our own, with the same set of standards is asinine. If IQ is about how you perform in context of your peers, why would that provide an accurate reflection of your intelligence if you are sub-saharan African measured against american school children?
And, really, what this comes down to is the fact that studies like this are inherently racist, by measuring the links between “intelligence” (a genetically-controlled, though vaguely defined, measure) and “race” (a socially-constructed delineation). Race is not a genetically supported idea. There are no “races” in science, no “blacks” or “whites” or “latinos” or “asians,” etc.
I’d be willing to bet that, if properly designed, internally-fixated tests were administered to each different group, you’d find that the gamut of intelligence runs from mental handicap to genius in all of them. And if you think any different, Rylan, you’re pretty racist.
35. SlickWilly - April 25th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Bob: According to the Evil Wiki, emotional intelligence is a real concept, described as “an ability, capacity, or skill to perceive, assess, and manage the emotions of one’s self, of others, and of groups.” Ever met an adult that acts like a kid…immature, childish, petty? They have a low emotional intelligence.
36. SlickWilly - April 25th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Rylan: We can discuss the issue intelligently if you’d like. I’d like to see some intelligence from you first, though.
37. Kreachure - April 25th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Oh boy. Somehow you managed to stir up controversy in a completely innocent and uncontroversial list.
Seriously, consider lightening up. It’s good for your health!
38. Csimmons - April 25th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Ahhh… those crazy japanese, of course they made human tetris which is fucking hilarious.
39. SamL - April 25th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Surprised that “Pie Hell Punishment” didn’t make it. A guy has to go through his morning routine…without making any reaction to the constant barage of cream pies being thrown in his face.

2nd and 3rd parts can be found under the user’s video list/side bar.
40. Mom424 - April 25th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Kreachure;
Allowing folks to spew biased, misleading, and inflammatory statistics without challenge is irresponsible. That goes treble for overtly racist comments.
Rylan; And what criteria did you use to judge me as ignorant? Is it because I realize that circumstance plays a larger role in perceived intelligence than potential? Exactly how intelligent would you be, deprived of nutrition, health care, and your smug white-bread upbringing?
Having a nice theoretical discussion in my living room I would have Einstein; stranded on a desert island, I want the fellow from Sub-saharan Africa. Different requirements, different intelligence.
41. SlickWilly - April 25th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Kreachure: You don’t know me too well if you think I’m all business all the time. And if you wouldn’t mind reading back over the comments, I didn’t stir up anything. I was baited. Not intentionally baited, but baited nonetheless, with the posting of that ignorant “study” and the equally ignorant comment that followed.
As the saying goes, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. You might have intended this list to be innocent and uncontroversial, but we all see things a little differently.
42. Dana - April 25th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Only in Japan are they not afraid to scare little girls and throw elderly men out of warm cabins into the cold snow. Hehe!
43. goof_ball - April 25th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Japanese people are so funny!
44. stevenh - April 25th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Kreachure:
I didn’t intend to misspell your name… Sorry.
Weird how a wonderful and benign list can spark some flame debate…
Rylan is not necessarly wrong in his statistics. What is wrong, however, is the thought that any ‘IQ test’ can be culturally neutral, and that the statistics are valid.
While I do not know the stats that he is quoting, (1) to my knowledge, no test of ‘innate intelligence’ has ever existed and (2) even the hack tests used in the USA were never meant to be used in a multi-cultural setting.
Keep in mind that IQ tests are usually language dependant so the quality of comparison depends on the quality of translations - suspect at best.

Japanese Toilets prank doesn’t make it to the list?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsDbOMJOMgQ
46. Kreachure - April 25th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Mom424: All I said was that it’s kinda ridiculous to have a clash when this list is supposed to be as clean and innocent fun as it can get in this site. And how am I supposed to ‘allow’ or ‘disallow’ anything here? It’s my list, but not my website.
As other comments prove, most people are actually having fun with this list, which is what you should’ve been doing instead of paying attention to feather rufflers and keeping up bitter arguments over things that have little to no relation to the list. Isn’t the world filled with enough bitterness elsewhere?
I’m nobody’s boss, but can’t we just stop fighting for at least a while and enjoy the simpler things in life? Pleeeeeeeeze?
:D

51. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Fuck!
52. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Search “race intelligence” on Wikipedia and check out the first two results.
53. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
To clarify, I’m not afraid to acknowledge that there are real differences among races (intelligence being one of them), but I treat everyone as if they are equal.
54. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
“Is it because I realize that circumstance plays a larger role in perceived intelligence than potential?”
So you admit that potential (genetics) is a factor? Again, I’m not a racist and I only meant it to get people worked up, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t validity to it.
55. NN - April 25th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Haha, I’ve seen #1 before. Long live Japan!
56. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
“The state of knowledge does not permit a precise estimate, but half a century of work, now amounting to hundreds of empirical and theoretical studies, permits a broad conclusion that the genetic component of IQ is unlikely to be smaller than 40 percent or higher than 80 percent. The most unambiguous direct estimates, based on identical twins raised apart produce some of the highest estimates of heritability. For purposes of this discussion, we will adopt a middling estimate of 60 percentheritability, which, by extension means that IQ is about 40 percent a matter of environment
57. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Sorry, I hijacked this list. Delete my comments, by all means.
58. Mom424 - April 25th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Rylan;
Why would our site administrators delete your comments?
Free speech applies to everyone, even those with misconceptions.
Where in my comments did I say that heredity has nothing to do with intelligence? My comment is that intelligence does not follow the man-made racial divisions that you subscribe to. Differences in overall scoring are cultural and due to circumstance. ie; grinding poverty will affect IQ. Brain development requires nutrition. Potential is thwarted by economic and geographical chance.
Raise 500 white children, 500 asian children, 500 black children, 500 whatever other race I’ve forgotten, give them the same pre-natal care, upbringing, nutrition, schooling; the vagaries in intelligence would be the same regardless of race.
Don’t be telling me to google; 5 minutes and I can prove anything you want. Anyone can publish anything on the internet. You quote us some sources, we’ll see what you come up with. You made the comment, defend it.
59. Cyn - April 25th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
anytime you post a coded link in comments you chance having that comment thrown into moderation. like anywhere online that has commenting, there are filters for spam and other things any site has had issues w/ in the past. as with the use of numbers here (and other things.)

if your comment has a link in it. or numercial numbers not text numbers. or if you are certain you commented correctly and it still does not ’show’ …do not keep entering the same comment or similar comments. it is either in moderation due to it being filtered or it could be your system and/or ISP has delayed its input. or it could be LV has a hiccup.
when you keep commenting it throws off the count for those people who are still counting comments or using the numbered comment as reference in their own comment…both of which are extremely lousy ideas btw. do no count. do no use the number of the comment. just address that person by name in your response. leave the counting of comments to J if he’s running a contest or whatnot.
basically when in doubt ..do not hit enter again.
as for any comments in moderation, i always release the most recent timestamp. so gimme a minute.
and please …everyone should read or re read the comment posting etiquette ..the link directly under this comment box.
60. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
“You quote us some sources, we’ll see what you come up with.”
Like I said, my posts aren’t showing up if I include links; start by searching “intelligence race” in Wikipedia and checking out the first two results (you’ll find legitimate resources within both, so don’t assume otherwise).
“Raise 500 white children, 500 asian children, 500 black children, 500 whatever other race I’ve forgotten, give them the same pre-natal care, upbringing, nutrition, schooling; the vagaries in intelligence would be the same regardless of race.”
Where could I find the resources that support this statement?
61. Rylan - April 25th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Additionally, search for “Is Race A Valid Taxonomic Construct?” for an easy to read overview.
62. jfrater - April 26th, 2008 at 2:53 am
Rylan: we don’t delete comments unless they are spam - sometimes your comments might not appear immediately because they contain URLs or certain key spam words - it is then up to Cyn and I to approve them. I am currently on holiday so it is up to Cyn to do it when she gets time. Be patient and they will show up
I am trying my best to do a bit of admin when I can (iPhone or internet cafe).
63. Houkama - April 26th, 2008 at 2:55 am
Very nice one, I didn’t know most of them^^ I guess I will go and look for some more Kasou Taishou stuff now…
One little thing, though: Description for #4 is probably meant as “human Bunraku theatre”, as Kabuki is the thing where all parts are played by men^^;
Nice Job, Thanks!!
64. Stereo Mike - April 26th, 2008 at 3:25 am
I’m so glad you added this list! I was trying to come up with a list myself that included Zuiikin English (the exercise show) and Masquerade (the cool costume game show) but found it impossible to summarise under a title… but well done! I can’t fathom why we can’t come up with a decent, fun game show that goes beyond answering questions, lying and opening boxes.
65. astraya - April 26th, 2008 at 6:39 am
Somewhere on youtube is a video of a group of Korean men parodying the video in no 11, but I can’t find it right now.
The last time I checked, we were all part of the human race.
66. astraya - April 26th, 2008 at 6:49 am
I did find this, though, which goes to video no 1.
67. astraya - April 26th, 2008 at 6:57 am

68. Elsa - April 26th, 2008 at 7:48 am
I must agree with Mom four-two-four (spelt per Cyn’s directions -tee hee) IQ tests are extremely biased based on the formularies used in compiling said tests. IQ tests also do not denote the amount of supposed intellegence, but more aptly the ability to process and solve problems (simplified explanation). Factor in any number of variables(geo-political, economic, etc) and you could have an almost endless outcome with differing results on any given day. Kinda like the thousand monkeys and a typewriter theory. To even imply one race superior to another based solely on genetics freaks the hell out of me.
I am always a bit suspicious of anyone who puts too much emphasis on the results of said tests. I come from a family that historically has scored very high on standardized tests, but I do not put that down to genetics, but rather a lively household with a tremendous amount of mental stimuli from birth. The tests were seen almost as a joke among the siblings (The school system requested and provided the hoops for us to jump through). The only time I ever refer to any of the results is to use it in a joke.
Methinks we have a troll in our midst.
69. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 8:02 am
“To even imply one race superior to another based solely on genetics freaks the hell out of me.”
Of course it’s ridiculous, that is why I reiterated that it was a joke! However, I still think it’s silly to assume that peoples living in separate environments for thousands of years will somehow remain equal.
70. Mom424 - April 26th, 2008 at 8:05 am
Elsa; Let him troll. I am actually laughing out loud. I knew where his stats were going to come from. All of his “sources” trace back to one scientist(?); Phillip K Rushton. Here is one ridiculous statement from him
“Blacks, according to Rushton, have larger genitals, making them more promiscuous, and smaller brains, making them less intelligent than whites and Asians. Using 60 different measures, Rushton ranks the races along an evolutionary scale with blacks at the bottom and Asians at the top.”
He actually taught at a Canadian University - in order to not appear politically correct he wasn’t fired - the students heckled him out of class, he had to record his lectures in private.
There are a million learned articles calling him out on his foolishness. The police actually investigated him, considered charging him with hate crimes against a definable race; decided he was looney not criminal.
Here is what happened to him;
“Rushton became an outcast from the reputable scientific community. After seeing his scientific career spiral downhill since the 1990s, Rushton was dealt some final blows to seal his fate. His reputation was so lowly he was booed off the unreputable Geraldo Rivera stage set. The only major supporters of the racial ideology of this failed scientist remaining into the 21st century are David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan who lost the Louisiana governor’s race over a decade ago, and today a worldwide spokesman for the white supremacy movement”

To clarify, I don’t mean one group is better overall, but rather that there are measurable differences among the groups.

“Elsa; Let him troll. I am actually laughing out loud.”
I’ve actually been posting on this website for awhile now. How many times do I have to repeat that I was being facetious about one race being overall superior to another?

“To clarify, I don’t mean one group is better overall, but rather that there are measurable differences among the groups.”
Oh lord,where to even begin.
No, it’s too easy…I … must…resist…
74. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 8:32 am
Now knowing that I’m neither a troll or a racist, in fact, I have friends of all colors and have dated both an Hispanic and black girl, can any of you entertain the possibility that there are relatively small, yet real genetic differences among races?
75. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 8:36 am
“Oh lord,where to even begin.
No, it’s too easy…I … must…resist…”
That answers my question! I’m sorry that some subjects are too touchy for you.
76. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 8:42 am
You know what, you guys are right. Differences are only skin deep, and to suggest otherwise makes me both stupid and a racist.
77. Elsa - April 26th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Rylan..not too touchy….more like not worth wasting my breath (figuratively speaking). And it would border on the cruel, akin to shooting fish in a barrel.
78. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 8:48 am
So you can’t entertain the possibility that there are relatively small, yet real genetic differences among races?
79. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 9:00 am
“Human populations have been largely separate in breeding populations for tens of thousands of years. It takes an enormous effort of pig-headed faith to believe that it is impossible for there to be differences in aggregate intelligence between groups despite the existence of differences in skin colour, skull shape, facial features and stature. Maintaining that the average penis lengths of all races is also the same is as absurd as believing in transubstantiation or the Angel Moroni. Of course there are aggregate differences between populations and it is absurd to imagine that brain function and intelligence would be immune to variation, that the politically unacceptable would also conveniently be scientifically impossible is absurd. But the greatest absurdity is the way that the unthinkable is kept unthinkable, by closing down research and refusing to look in case evidence is found and declaring that anybody expressing an interest in the controversy must be an evil racist even to be interested. That line is as much bullshit as the “move along please there’s nothing to see here” as police throw a cordon around the scene where three cheerleaders and a dwarf were decapitated with chainsaws.”

Rylan, it isn’t your theory of IQ having genetic components that’s offensive, it’s the word superior, that you used in your first post on the subject. Forget about race for a moment, and consider only brain function. Obviously a high IQ is a good thing to have, but it alone doesn’t mean one brain is superior to another. Would you say that the brain of a really smart person with a disabling neurosis or severe depression is superior to a well adjusted person of average intelligence?
81. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 9:46 am
“Rylan, it isn’t your theory of IQ having genetic components that’s offensive, it’s the word superior, that you used in your first post on the subject.”
I’ve stated about five times now that it was a joke. If I was serious and a white supremacist, I wouldn’t link people to statistics indicating that Asians are smarter than whites!
82. Joseph - April 26th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Is there a way to rank or rate lists? this is great
83. carpe_noctem - April 26th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Rylan: Obviously your very argument at the start was based upon a faulty thesis, because even though you’ve repeatedly stated that it was a joke, your basic premise was that Japanese are superior (in a strictly scientific sense, meaning greater than) to us in intelligence, while black people are inferior.
But your defence for this statement just a few comments ago is that if you were a white supremacist then you wouldn’t be giving out statistics about Asians being smarter than white people. I’m not… really sure just exactly what you think you’re writing about any more, but if you go back up there to your first comment (it’s actually your second that’s the critical one, the first is just you bitching about the title of the list) you’ll see that your first comment was about how Asian people are marginally better than us in IQ tests, and black and sub-saharan people are drastically lowered.
I’m not saying you’re an inherently racist person, but to judge an entire race based on an arbitrary ranking system that Japanese people in particular are taught from birth is of critical importance (most of Japan’s industry is from trade with America, and english skills are considered necessary for many of them), while black people (and hispanics, who weren’t even mentioned) often are given poorer quality living conditions and educations (which tend to focus more on life skills and potential career options than pointless verbal and spatial cognitive exercises).
Australian Aborigines were given an average IQ of 62, and these are the minority indigenous Australian’s, who’ve had around 240 years of contact with anything remotely resembling civilisation, and the majority of them live far away from the sprawling metropolises that offer any education. But if you’re going into the bush, you don’t want the Harvard Law Graduate with a ‘certifiable’ IQ of 170, you want the man who knows what he’s doing. I’d love to see how well you’d fare in an Aboriginal IQ test.
And you say repeatedly that surely someone must agree with you that there are genetic differences between the two. A four year old with one eye can look at a Japanese, African and American and tell them apart, so to base a defensive argument about intelligence on the fact that different races look different? I’m sure you’ll win many supporters with that.
One last thing, just to stick with the whole IQ thing. I’ve had my IQ tested a number of times, and not on the internet (where all your information seems to be coming from), but with actual psychiatric tests, and each time, my IQ has been ranked between 160 and 170. Einstein’s (although quoted in ridiculous discrepancies on the web) is estimated to have been in that range. I’m not even going to try to pretend I’m anywhere near as smart as him, but since I’m willing to bet you aren’t going to agree with a lot of what I’ve just said, given that my IQ is apparently so high, wouldn’t that mean that my argument, as compared to someone with a comparatively lower IQ would be, what was the word you seemed to like, superior?
84. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I made the mistake of bringing up such a controversial topic by joking around about the superiority of one race. There is no way to objectively determine the superiority of one race over another. Also, I’m willing to admit that the term “intelligence” is somewhat vague, and that the methods used in the resources I pointed to (and there are plenty of them, contrary to what mom424 said) could be unreliable.
The only point I AM trying to make is that it is wrong, but of course politically correct, to assume, like I think everyone pitted against me is, that the mental capacity of all races was unaltered by evolution.
“I’ve had my IQ tested a number of times, and not on the internet (where all your information seems to be coming from), but with actual psychiatric tests, and each time, my IQ has been ranked between 160 and 170″
I know, everyone on the Internet has an IQ of 160 and an eight inch dick!
85. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
To further clarify so as to avoid anymore confusion:
“And you say repeatedly that surely someone must agree with you that there are genetic differences between the two. A four year old with one eye can look at a Japanese, African and American and tell them apart, so to base a defensive argument about intelligence on the fact that different races look different? I’m sure you’ll win many supporters with that.”
It’s not proof by any means, but the differences among races that are currently scientifically verifiable open up the POSSIBILITY that there may be variation in intelligence.
86. Rylan - April 26th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
“One hundred years ago nobody would have turned a hair at the suggestion that the races are fundamentally different and indeed the opposite view, that the races were fundamentally equal, would have been regarded as absurd and a denial of science. Today to suggest that races even exist is considered to be a great heresy. Is this progress, a denial of the obvious or an evil form of censorship?
Anybody can state that the races don’t exist and announce that all men are equal, nobody demands to see their doctorate. A brain-damaged ten year old child can announce that races are equal and will be given a standing ovation. A Nobel Prize winning biologist who says the opposite will be banned from campuses across the world.
My own view on the matter is that there is overwhelming evidence to support the concept that people should be treated as people and all people should be given the opportunity to make what they can of their life and not have their life mapped out for them on the basis of their perceived race, ethnicity or culture. Black people have become senators, fighter pilots, surgeons, professors, judges, rock guitarists and generals. There is no field in which black people cannot compete (competitive tanning is fictional). Similar things can be said for women, but here’s the fundamental difference: nobody expects people to pretend that women and men will always do equally well in every field.
It is blindingly obvious that there would be hardly any famous women in sport if they had to compete against men. Nobody needs to lie and pretend that women and men are the same in order to argue for the right of women to take part. But in matters of race it seems it is necessary to lie and suppress evidence of difference and to lie about such suppression in order to maintain the fiction that human equality is based on science rather than ethics. The case for equality of access to education and opportunity is a moral one and it is cast iron, it will not be undermined by admitting that the aggregate IQ scores of different groups is not the same any more than the case for allowing women into universities is affected by the statistics that men outnumber women in the top (and bottom) 2% of achievements by two to one.”

Well I would say that the one point you are trying to make is wrong. I’m not that politically correct, I copped some shit for poor taste jokes over in the other thread, but I took it with humility over there, so don’t try to justify your position. I definitely agree with you that the term intelligence is vague, that it’s impossible to guage in any fair way a global ‘intelligence’ but you can’t genuinely believe that evolution over millions of years resulted in some cultures being dumbed down?
No one’s willing to do such an experiment, but if you got 50 average newborn babies from a small tribe in the Phillipines, and took 50 of the same from America, and swapped them over, I would be extremely, extremely surprised if the average perfermance of those Phillipine students wasn’t virtually identical to their peers. Similarly, the Americans in the Phillipines would be taught the necessary skills to survive in that environment.
According to you, you say that since these races were altered by evolution, they’re more likely to possess a base, hunter instinct, and thus more likely to go on a hunting rampage through New York City. I know you’ll probably quote that as something ludicrous, but it’s entirely true, if you say that there is a genetic code of mental capacity imprinted within these babies, then they’re more likely to exhibit certain traits such as aptitude for learning, concentration, and of course other such genetic descendencies such as instinctual responses to stimuli.
I’m not saying we’ll have a Vietnam-vet situation, where the sight of a spear drives them insane, but surely, if those instincts exist, they’d be more likely to do something like that. Of course, that also means that the Americans would have a greater capability for learning, so they’d be the smartest damn hunters in the village. Somehow I think 4 generations of corporate law isn’t going to help him out too much.
But then again, if they have a higher capacity for learning, does that mean only booksmarts? Can this American kid only learn the way all his predecessors learning, or are you suggesting that since he’s evolved differently, he’ll learn anything better than them, and hence he’ll excel at tribal matters as well?
Oh, and just so you know, you may wish to go up and see how many resources you used. I spot two hyperlinks and one arbitraily quoted page. You might also like to check out the fact that all the information you present on your first hyperlink can be found at the wikipedia page you also gave us. Forgive me for being just a little cynical of wikipedia when anyone can change an entire article on the history of france to the word ‘poo’.
And I just finished high school, and got 99.4 in my UAI, it means that .6% of Australia beat me. And guess what, the Aboriginals get streamed independently of us. If you need proof I got that, I’ll send it to you, but I don’t see how you’re worth it.
88. carpe_noctem - April 26th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
And I do apologise to everyone else that reads this, it was never my intention to fill this page up with such an argument. And Rylan, I don’t get how that last quote seems to make much sense. ‘There is no field in which black people cannot compete…’ So you agree that they’re just as suitable for a number of professions regardless of evolutionary standards?
‘It is blindingly obvious that there would be hardly any famous women in sport if they had to compete against men…’ Have you noticed how in virtually every non-asexual, and non-hermaphroditic species on the planet, there is a distinct difference in the roles of male and females? Some species have the females in the dominant role, some have males, it doesn’t really change anything. As for what that has to do with race? You’re saying that, using sport as an example, it must be important or you wouldn’t have added it in, we should start segregating in terms of race now? That just seems horrifying racist of you, to say that black people are no longer allowed in the NFL, they can go come up with their own league. But of course, you’re doing it to be ‘fair’ to them, so they aren’t hindered by their inferior mental capacities.
Hyena’s are quite social animals. In the wild, there have been numerous instances of Spotted, Striped and Brown hyenas forming single packs, and in these inter-special, let alone inter-racial packs, there is nothing to discriminate between the three types, any can take the dominant role, they are all treated equally, despite some slight genetic differences in canine length, average size and mating habits. These are completely different animals co-habiting with each other, regardless of each other’s species. They look different, they have similar canine brains, but they’re all the same when you put them together. So seriously mate, just drop it, if you seriously want to argue whether or not all races are equal, this is not the site for you.

Rylan; The problem with your ‘joke’ is that it shows, however light-hearted you intended it to be, some errors in your thought patterns. The genetic differences you attribute to race should be attributed to culture, economics and geography.
Asian folk coming to Canada get taller. And quickly, by the 2nd generation. Difference in diet. My kids’ friends, 3rd and 4th generation, are no different than my children. I guess their genetic predisposition to high test scores wore off.
91. Mom424 - April 26th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
I should proof my own comments better. Please omit the word genetics.
Should say “the differences you attribute to race”

At the absolute most I’m saying that I’m open to the possibility that ON THE WHOLE Asians, for instance, might be more capable than other races at excelling in science related fields; that’s a far cry from supporting segregation. Anyone not blinded by political correctness can see that the fastest runners on earth are overwhelmingly black. Why is it impossible, for instance, that on the whole Asians are more capable than whites, Hispanics, blacks at excelling in science related fields?

Rylan: I’m sick enough of this argument to agree with you. I’m open to the possibility that there is a slight chance that Asians are better at science, but I’m sorry, I refuse to admit it’s because they evolved that way. I’m not debating for the sake of it, i genuinely believe that you’re mistaken to ASSUME that Asians are better just because of their race, much as it is incorrect to see a black man and assume that he is a better runner than a white man, or to assume that a black runner with identical training and nutrition will edge out a white runner at the Olympics simply because of the fact he is black. I certainly agree that they always seem to win, but the Russians tend to win gymnastics many years, and i feel it would be incorrect (rather than politically incorrect as you indicate i’m suggesting) to say that it’s because their entire race was structured that way.
Hopefully this can end our argument, because I do actually have other things to do with my life surprisingly. And too bad pompous isn’t a major? Haha, i’m an 18 year old Australian, i barely know what pompous even means. I was just saying, you accused me of lying, but I can back it up if you want. Trust me, i’m the most laid-back person in Europe right now, I was just bored enough to get into a fight!

why on earth would people volunteer for this sort of public display of pain just to get laughs?

You know, all argumentation aside, this list is hysterical. The prank at the mountain spa is classic. I can’t believe they were really launching unsuspecting marks down a mountain side on a chair fitted with skis. I can’t watch the video at work, but I’m pretty sure there is a moment where one of the guys catches some air. It really seems like someone could get hurt, which I think makes it alot funnier.
The library game almost made me piss my pants, and the 100-person flash mob was a moment of pure, distilled Japanese comedic genius.
