Top 10 Discontinued Sodas
Published on January 20, 2008 - 282 Comments
I lived for pop long before I was able to gorge myself on beer. I was an aficionado of sorts, and attempted to try all the soda I could as often as I could. Many of my favorite pops as a kid and a young adult have since gone the way of the Dodo; disappearing into oblivion. Sometimes a few make it back for another life, but, like the ten here on this list, many have faded away only to survive on Ebay and web sites. Enjoy them here, while they last.
10. Coke II

So, back when Coca Cola started to slump a little in sales to its fiercest competitor, Pepsi Cola, someone made the executive decision to dink around with Coke’s secret formula thereby making it taste more like, well, PEPSI. It wasn’t bad, per se , but it sure as hell wasn’t Coke. I remember consuming mass quantities of this stuff by can and, the newest form of container: 2 liters. This was an early eighties disaster and it always managed to make an appearance at our sleep-overs and it did a fine job of keeping us wired for hours. I think it had more sugar as well. I really do miss this stuff, but sadly, when Coke went back to its ‘Classic’ formula permanently, Coke II disappeared into soda oblivion.
9. Hubba Bubba

The strongest memory I have of Hubba Bubba Soda is from high school. We, in the ass-backward, dirt-water, shit-hole that is Paw Paw Michigan, used to hold school-wide contests involving all manner of self-deprecation. One of the ‘games’ was the infamous ‘Pop Chug’. The teaching staff that came up with this gem were sick and evil sadists of the highest degree. Everyone would stand over a beach towel with a ’spotter’ on one side and commence to gulping as much warm Hubba Bubba Soda as humanly possible. Loads of fun. I was never a big fan of this gum-flavored pop, but it does hold certain high esteem in my clogged memory bank.
8. Pepsi’s Wild Bunch

Just in case the images aren’t clear, we’ve got: Raging Razzberry, Tropical Chill, and Strawberry Burst. I love how Raspberry is cleverly misspelled into ‘cool’ territory with the two ‘Z’s. Very nice. Anyway, The deepest remembrances I have of this particular trio was the chilling innards of my grandparent’s ancient refrigerator in their garage. It was one of those ‘chill chest’ types with the giant metal walk-in-restaurant-freezer style of handle and enough wattage to cause neighborhood brown outs. Yeah, that thing was always chock full of every conceivable beverage from beer to Bosco . Every time we’d visit we’d try to find the most odd drink we could dig out of there and I quite fondly remember tossing back a few of these guys. Dead and gone now. No, not my Grandparents, but the fridge and the soda, for sure.
7. Surge

Though not out of circulation as long as some of these, Surge has still become a classic to many a pining American. Coca Cola distributed this green soda for quite some time. I can remember it coming in to its own right around 1995 or so, and really building up steam for a few years before succumbing to the popularity of other, weaker, beverages. It had a citrus-like flavor to it but there was something almost lime-Jell-O-ish in the back ground that would always leave a little tang phlegm at the back of my throat. But it was pretty tasty and I could knock back a 2 liter in a sitting no problem. Almost, but not quite, melted candy.
6. Leed

Leed was a carbonated lemonade drink sold in some parts of the world during the middle to late 20th century. It was produced and distributed by Coca-Cola Amatil only in New Zealand and Australia. Leed was one of the staple drinks among New Zealand retailers during the 1980s and was probably the most common lemonade drink distributed by Coca-Cola Amatil during its life. In 1984, Leed was discontinued and replaced by the more widely known Sprite brand. Accompanying this change was also a new recipe.
5. Josta

This was a pretty recent extinction as well. I remember drinking a few of these back when Guarana was the new kid on the beverage block being marketed by Coke as the energy source of choice. Josta was so chock-full of the stuff you could, in fact, taste it. It was a tad medicine-y, but that flavor was nicely buried beneath the strong fruit and spice overtones that assaulted your taste buds moments before. This pop was far different taste wise than just about anything else out there, and it was pretty decent while it lasted.
4. Orbitz

Oh yeah, soda with little chewy chunks in it. Outstanding. Somehow, the creators of this beverage managed to thwart the normalcies of science by allowing starch nuggets to suspend themselves ever so beautifully in a super-sweet solution. It was really good, too. I remember Target selling the hell out of this stuff for quite a while. I enjoyed the drinking part, but somehow, coming to the little lumps floating there in was a lot like drinking a glass of gravy… except a lot sweeter. I do miss it.
3. Kick

Kick was a lot like the bastard step-son of Mountain Dew and Mello Yellow. It tasted really similar to both, but almost leaning a bit toward Mello Yellow with its citrus overtones. I actually preferred it over either and would go through a case of this stuff during my late night Dungeons and Dragons marathons. I think it may have made a bit of a come back lately, but not around here. Too bad.
2. Slice

Slice was the precursor to Sierra Mist by the Pepsi corporation and for my buck, it tasted a whole lot better. My grandmother, in her massive fridge of holding, used to keep a constant supply of the Mandarin Orange flavor of this stuff. I hate mandarin oranges in any form, so I stuck to the lemon-lime standard and all was good with the world. There was something less overpowering about Slice as compared to 7-UP; not quite as crisp, not quite as effervescent, but certainly just as tasty.
1. Crystal Pepsi

I was in college in 1993 and this soda was a huge hit up at Northern Michigan U. in Marquette, Michigan. My room mate and I loved the stuff. We could get it at the local Circle K for like $2 an eight-pack of 20-ouncers. I honestly loved this stuff, I would drink the HELL out of a few packs per week. I remember one time I tried to be cool by slashing open the plastic yolk that securely held together the octuplets with my X-Acto knife. Bad idea. I ended up cutting two of the bottles and sprayed soda all over our dorm room. Not especially funny. Anyway, there was just something about the non-caramel colored Pepsi that really appealed to me. I miss this the most of all.

I miss the Sprite Tropical Remix, I had my last one in Vegas 2004 and I’m glad they didn’t phase out Code Red.
2. Ginny - January 20th, 2008 at 12:55 am
TaB is still in production. I’m drinking one now actually.
3. Deus - January 20th, 2008 at 12:59 am
It’s called pop, not soda, it has too many syllables

4. stormy617 - January 20th, 2008 at 1:03 am
I remember when that Orbitz crap came out it just looked too gross and I never did try it.
I too like Code red mountain dew………I have been doing the dew most of my life that is my favorite pop……and the thing that i like most about the code red is that it is a cherry pop with caffeine in it….LOL…..I can’t stand coffee so i have to get it somehow.
5. suoehprom - January 20th, 2008 at 1:24 am
Tab is still on the market, typically the same stores that carry Jolt will have Tab.
6. jfrater - January 20th, 2008 at 1:30 am
Thanks for the heads up on Tab - I have replaced it with Leed (at number 6).
7. jfrater - January 20th, 2008 at 1:31 am
oh - and I hated orbitz - it was too sweet and those globules were a terrible idea!
8. chadster - January 20th, 2008 at 2:11 am
what did the clear pepsi taste like???
9. sdggrant - January 20th, 2008 at 2:17 am
Man I LOVED Surge. It was like liquid cocaine, kept me wired throughout all of middle school.
10. NoName - January 20th, 2008 at 2:23 am
Wasn’t the original Tab a type of diet coke (released the same time as Fresca - also a diet soda)….whereas the new one is a sugar free energy drink.
11. jfrater - January 20th, 2008 at 2:32 am
NoName: I am pretty sure that is what the old one was like.
I haven’t tasted most of the drinks on this list.
12. ed9362 - January 20th, 2008 at 2:36 am
I dont think i have heard of any of these I am probably not old enough for leed but i have never seen any of these is australia
13. Nelia - January 20th, 2008 at 3:02 am
Oh man… Surge. I wish you hadn’t reminded me of how awesome that stuff was. It tasted good, and kept you wired for hours. I never really drank soda, but Surge was irresistible. Loved it. Now I am all depressed because I miss it. It is probably good that it is not on the market anymore, it is more healthy that I don’t drink soda anymore.
14. kristo - January 20th, 2008 at 3:30 am
you are forgetting the mother of all wonderful soda pops that have gone the way of the dinosaur. I am speaking of DR. Slice. BEST POP EVARRRRRRRRRR!!! i will pay good money for bottles of this pop if anyone knows if it still exists
15. jwbm2525 - January 20th, 2008 at 3:53 am
I didn’t realize slice wasn’t still in production. I was one of the ones who hated coke II, we called it “new coke”. So many people hated it that they changed it back after a short time, that is why the coca cola products now say “classic”.
16. 20Fan20 - January 20th, 2008 at 5:12 am
Was it Surge that led to all the Red Bull Style drinks we have today? If so, thank you Surge for giving me Red Bull in my Coors Light.
I trust you all when you say drinking Orbitz was good but there is something wrong with drinking chunky soda!
17. ylekiot - January 20th, 2008 at 5:30 am
Do they still make Moxie that stuff was nasty. It was the only cola my grandmother ever had in her fridge.
18. diochick - January 20th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Moxie is deelish and is still in production. I know that here in PA we can get it at beer distributors, grocery stores don’t carry it, but in New England they have Moxiefest yearly.
They still sell regular TaB as well, they do make an energy drink, but that is seperate from the original.
19. Stuart Boswell - January 20th, 2008 at 7:02 am
If you want that wired effect try “”Jolt” if it is still available, is is about six times as strong as “Red Bull”
20. StewWriter - January 20th, 2008 at 7:16 am
Thanks for replacing Tab, Jamie… when I sent the list over I had forgotten that Tab is still around, just not around me. Anyway, I’d be happy to tell you what Crystal Pepsi tasted like: Heaven. Seriously, It was still similar to Pepsi in most respects, but since it didn’t have the caramel coloring or flavor in it, it lacked that almost burnt sugar undertones of regular pop, or, as Opus from Bloom County once put it: Malted Battery Acid. Anyway, it was kind of crisp like a 7-Up, but still Pepsi sweet. I lived for it!
21. petey mcgee - January 20th, 2008 at 7:32 am
i remember having coke II in my high school cafeteria about 1995 or 96. and surge is still around, coke calls it vault now. same formula but with those ‘energy’ thingys. the best pop i have EVER had is called manzana lift. it is an apple flavored (or flavoured for our uk friends) soda. i had it in mexico and would kill for some more. i have heard a theory that all the pop tasted better there, because they use cane sugar, not high fructose corn syrup.
does anyone remember chocolate faygo? that stuff was nasty! and when i was in college at Ohio University, we had a regional pop called ski. bright yellow, not even yellow green like mt. dew . weird taste too.
22. islanderbst - January 20th, 2008 at 7:41 am
ah pop my favorite food group!
some more: pepsi light (had lemony flavor), and sunkist natural (better sprite remix), apple and cherry cola slice, and strawberry nehi
23. coach_d - January 20th, 2008 at 8:09 am
what a unhealthy, vapid walk down memory lane! so, how’s your DIABETIES?
24. Budz - January 20th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Orbitz is still around by another name, Imockery did an article on it. http://www.i-mockery.com/blabb.....ll-exists/
25. Mom424 - January 20th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Tab used to be good,,,when I was a young thing and Tab was new it tasted just like coke but not as sweet….the sugar was reduced and not replaced with that ass-tasting aspartame, xylitol or whatever vile shit is the current sugar replacement. Same thing with Fresca,,,Fresca was the very best mix for Rye, Rum, Vodka,,,,not too sweet,,,,now it sucks,,,same curse as above…
Now I vote for Wink,,,awesome mix,,,goes with everything Or Roses Lime Cordial and gin/vodka….mmmmmm
26. Mom424 - January 20th, 2008 at 8:32 am
also I miss Faygo pop, gone, gone, gone
and Fanta white (actually clear) cream soda
27. islanderbst - January 20th, 2008 at 8:39 am
mom, if you make it to michigan faygo is still big here
theyve got a squirt/ sprite mix called “60/40″ thats awesome
28. Miss Destiny - January 20th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Coca Cola’s Vault energy soda tastes an awful lot like Surge, or at least I think it does.
And as soon as I saw the name of this list two kinds of pop came to mind, Surge and Crystal Pepsi. Glad to see they’re both represented! Surge was like, my favorite, I got through a summer vacation living on that and Ranch Doritos. Yum!
That stuff with the floaties looks disgusting, I wouldn’t want to drink that at all!
Faygo is still around where I live in Western NY. I can get 12 packs of cans on sale usually at my local grocery store.
29. albert0 - January 20th, 2008 at 8:48 am
In the UK none of these were ever sold
30. Niecy - January 20th, 2008 at 9:40 am
i remember the tropical sprites!!! they were so good!!! sad
31. Zubby - January 20th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Is Coke Blak still being made? Coffee flavored Coke just semed like a bad idea to me. I also recall seeing a Pepsi product not too long ago that was bright blue. I don’t know what it was, but my guess is that it won’t be around long.
You should do a list of top regional soft drinks, like Vernor’s in Michigan or the incredibaly nasty Green River in Chicago.
32. HexenBexen - January 20th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Mmmmmm…..invisible cola…
33. CRE - January 20th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Petey, you are correct about the HFCS thing. Mexican versions of sodas use cane sugar. The taste is better, and the soda doesn’t have that viscous feel that American soda does. Texturally, it is more like drinking diet soda. I live in northern Colorado, and we have a big Hispanic population, so the grocery stores (even Wal-Mart) carry a disproportionally high amount of foods geared towards that demographic (which rocks, I was raised on Southwestern food, and it is the best). Anyways, we can get the sugar-sweetened Cokes, Sprites, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, and a few microbrews out here, and they are way better. They are about the only sodas I will drink these days.
34. Ravyn - January 20th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Man all those drinks I used to have.
Surge: Wonderful speed. Went well when racing.
Josta: Such a weird flavor. Kept people wondering about me.
Orbitz: Almost always sold out at the store. This is liquid candy.
Kick: Great at the late night fires we had. Kept thing entertaining.
Slice: I keep forgetting this isn’t around anymore.
Crystal Pepsi: I really miss this one so much. It needs to come back out just like it used to be.
Miss Destiny: Vault is Surge reformulated and renamed. Coca Cola wanted to bring it back out because people were asking for it. But they didn’t want to admit to their wrongful discontinuation so they change the formula just enough to be different but still the same. Then they slapped another name on it to trick those who didn’t drink enough Surge to realize.
35. MC zippo - January 20th, 2008 at 10:09 am
They still sell faygo here in VA at a few places.
For me its all bout Big red soda. the best soda in the world. too bad they dont sell it here…
36. Mom424 - January 20th, 2008 at 10:10 am
petey; no i don’t remember faygo chocolate but i do have oh so fond memories of faygo Redpop,,,a cross between Benalyn dm and cherry/fruit punch…
Coke blak is available here, sounds much worse than it tastes but I sure wouldn’t pay the premium they want for it,,,regular coke tastes better anyway
Also we have Jamaican pop here, it too tastes way good, cane sugar again I presume…
37. QDV - January 20th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Nice to see some folks missing some of the same things that I’m missing, although I can at least still get Vernors here, far away from Michigan. For the Faygo folks, go visit www.detroitkidshow.com and check out a few of the classic “Remember when you were a kid?” commercials. When I visit home, I never remember to pick up any Red Pop and a bag of Better Made potato chips (for an afternoon of watching Sir Graves Ghastly). Add a bit of Towne Club pop — yeah, “pop,” not “soda”
— and we’re square.
Funny that Tab comes up, as I have a co-worker who’s half my age who was quoting “Back to the Future” last week — “Give me a Tab” — and he said he’d never had the stuff. Wasn’t hard for me to find a can for him, and while I admit it’s been well over half a lifetime since I really drank much of it, it still tasted the same to me: Not so great. Fresca’s easy to find, too, and these days, they’ve got flavoured Fresca in addition to the classic stuff.
Pepsi Light was another blast from the past, and I’ve been told that Diet Pepsi appears in Europe under that name. How did the old jingle go? “The time is right, for Pepsi Light, lemony Pepsi Light…”
Anybody remember Rondo, a citrus-flavoured pop, in a yellow can, from the 70s?
38. Spence425 - January 20th, 2008 at 10:37 am
the best of faygo always was (and still is in michigan) rock n rye…it’s like red pop and cola mixed together.
and i second the mention of Dr. Slice…that was my favorite for quite a while.
how about pepsi free? it was worthy even of a movie mention in back to the future (along with tab).
“you want a pepsi you’re going to pay for it!!”
39. goof_ball - January 20th, 2008 at 10:41 am
I don’t feel like reading all of the comments to see if someone said Pepsi Blue. That stuff was really good in my opinion…
40. cugirl - January 20th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Ah, how I miss Surge and Orbitz…I remember my sister and I always proudly displayed our empty bottles of Orbitz just because we thought they looked sweet. As for Surge - it’s probably a good thing it’s no longer, or my teeth may have rotted out of my mouth by now! Does anyone know if 7-Up Down is still being made?
41. cugirl - January 20th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Oh, and my roommate always talks about something called Five Alive? I’ve never heard of it…and whatever happened to just plain ‘ole Mr. Pibb? I used to love that stuff and I don’t care what anyone says - Pibb Xtra just isn’t the same!
42. Mikkle - January 20th, 2008 at 11:00 am
surge was legit, i used to drink that all the time with suicide slushies from 7-11
43. steve - January 20th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Cugirl-we’ve got five alive where I live
44. Ben - January 20th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Surge is not entirely dead. If you have ever had a Vault you might notice that it tastes exactly like Surge, pretty sure they just repackaged it.
45. Adam - January 20th, 2008 at 11:11 am
I agree with goof_ban, Pepsi blue was delicious and a part of me died when I found out that it wasn’t being sold anymore. From Wikipedia:
“The taste of Pepsi Blue was like cotton candy with a berry aftertaste (it resembled that of blueberries or raspberries to some, though Pepsi simply described it as “berry”) and much more sugary and syrupy than regular cola;”
46. Dianne - January 20th, 2008 at 11:17 am
I can’t believe I drank most of an Orbitz - that is until my friend asked me ‘Is it like having larva in your mouth?’
That’s when I spit it out and couldn’t even attempt the rest.
47. Your Mom - January 20th, 2008 at 11:22 am
I miss OK soda…that kinda ‘alternative’ soda in the mid 90s.
Also, it’s hard to find up here in Minnesota…but Big Red is one of my all time favorites.
Surge was good, and for some reason it reminds me of Slurm from the Futurama shows.
48. tim - January 20th, 2008 at 11:23 am
does anybody remember “tahti treat” ? do they
still make it ?
49. Snorb - January 20th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Anyone remember Diet Rite?
50. Tom - January 20th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
#48, I do remember Tahiti Treat, it was pretty good (or at least 7-year-old me thought so).
You can still get Barq’s root beer and creme soda, but they used to put out orange and grape too, along with some kind of lemon-lime thing that looked exactly like anti-freeze. It was all so good.
Also: Choc-cola. Yep, chocolate flavored cola. Might have been a midwestern thing, I don’t know . . . .
51. da9ve - January 20th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
New. York. Seltzer.
Was the best.
It’s (sorta) back in production, maybe temporarily, and it’s not as good as it used to be, and I can’t really find it reliably, so maybe it’s gone again already.
But it was the best.
Especially the blueberry and cream soda flavors.
52. fred - January 20th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Slice and Surge are still available.
53. NightmareFigment - January 20th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
tim, tahiti treat is still available in florida at certain publix supermarkets. recently saw it pop up at Big Lots! as well.
I myself miss the crystal pepsi. maybe we can start a write in campaign for it?
also if you are missing many of those olde time sodas, the Real Soda company started up 5 years ago in San Jose, CA that has brought back many of those old discontinued sodas, such as bubble up and all the NEHI flavors. www.realsoda.com
they also cary indy soda makers as well.
If you are in an area outside of CA there is a chain of stores here that do sell and ship globally. www.bevmo.com
until then, happy soda chugging!!!
54. Obryn13 - January 20th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
That picture isn’t even of Crystal Pepsi… It’s a picture of “Crystal” from the makers of Pepsi: A citrus cola. Best Pepsi product ever…
Crystal Pepsi sucked as bad as regular Pepsi…
55. Robert - January 20th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
AHHH, how could you leave out the wonderful, fantastic, hilarious, adoring, deliciousnous that was….
OK Soda.
56. Peeledpeas - January 20th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Jolt Cola was the first real energy drink. Came out in 1987 or so. TWICE the caffeine of ordinary cola.
I remember the whole Coke 2 fiasco vividly.
57. frommi2co - January 20th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Rock N Rye defnately the best faygo.. not sure if they still make it but the Candy Apple Faygo (sounds disgusting) but was AMAZING11 but then again that was in my herbally enhanced days.
58. Tim - January 20th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Robert - damn right. OK Soda ruled, all others drooled.
59. sarah - January 20th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
i wanna try hubba bubba soda!!
60. JDG - January 20th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Orbitz still exists although under a different name.
http://www.i-mockery.com/blabb.....ll-exists/
61. goodpickle - January 20th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Ugh.. i remember crystal pepsi tasting like dish-soap. I thought it had a chemical-like aftertaste. blech.. I figured someone must have liked it.. but apparently not enough of them to keep it around.
62. -=ChAoS=- - January 20th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
I used to buy a 1 liter bottle of Pepsi clear at lunch, then after work fill it with Zima (Hey, I was 18!) and sit on the beach with that, as no alcohol was allowed.
And I LOVED Mandarin Orange Slice, that was awesone!
63. shirtsbyeric - January 20th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Coke 2 was in the 90s. New Coke was in the 80s.
Coke Zero rules
64. Ed - January 20th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
“OK” was such a great pop…They had a phone number 1 800 I FEEL OK where you could talk to a live or “simulated live” operator…It was sooo cool!
65. Diogenes - January 20th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
and lets not forget all those used condom, hypo needles, bloody bandade and severed finger flavors.
i remember when new coke came out and there was this guy on tv they showed that had horded cases apon cases of coca-cola in his home, believing a fortune was afloat the moment the new version would cause mass panics with the lack of the real thing… and it did in a way and Coke classic was created as a substitute by the coca cola company. but we werent fooled that easily..and..ah..
66. Kelsi - January 20th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Bleh! I am so not a fan of sodas, I pretty much only drink stuff that’s like Sprite/Sierra Mist. I drank WAAAY too much when I was little and now I can’t stand the taste of dark sodas, but reading about all the different flavors and stuff on this list was interesting! I had Surge gum once, it was so nasty. I hope the soda tastes better than that, but I’ve never had Vault.
I think you should add Coca-Cola with real cocaine in it as a bonus. xD
67. petey mcgee - January 20th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
don’t know if it still exists, but my brother once brought slice ‘fresh’ or something from canada. was mint flavored slice. fucking eerie taste. but there are some weird flavored drinks from around the world. at the indian store here we can get this honey basil drink with these pulp coated seeds inside. looks and feels like tadpoles in your mouth, and just enough carbonation to make it seem flat. good dare drink.
68. Jim Bob - January 20th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
1) Orbitz is non-carbonated and so not a soda
2) OK Cola is conspicuoulsy absent
3) there was another awesome Guarana based drink whose name I can’t remember. Any thoughts?
4) you are dead on about Crystal Pepsi (delicious and non teeth staining).
69. Dag - January 20th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
If I’m correct, Surge is still sold here in Norway, with a bit different logo and called Urge. Sounds very much like the description and looks like it too.
70. trevor - January 20th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Where the hell is Rondo? Best soda evrr EVAR!
71. Jonathan - January 20th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Ah, glad to see I’m not the only one who is aware of the Surge == Vault rebranding…. I try a little of everything, and the first time I had Vault I went “Hot Shyte, this is Surge!”.
72. Diogenes - January 20th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
then there was ‘Purge’ which just shot sparks of molten metal bits straight through you makin yah scream for a near by rest stop off of highway whatever.
oh man, i knew i stopped commenting for a reason. what has it led to?
What would we have if thes colas continued using steroids? and the power punches and thirst quenchers with ginsing and hangover medicide with 800% vitamins..what happened?
I dont think I’ll sleep tonight.
73. riledupone - January 20th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I don’t know if it was a Canadian thing, but I remember a pop called “Bootleg”. It came in a silver can that looked like it had bullet holes in it. It wasn’t around for very long but I loved it!

RE: Trevor Rondo Evar!
what the hell is/or was Rondo? The best soda EVAR!? Trevor
somebodies gotta be storing that stuff in the basement of their home somewhere.
75. Eric Blade - January 20th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Vault is not exactly Surge. It’s close, but not quite. If I drink as much Vault as I did Surge, I start feeling awful.. whereas with Surge, I just felt fantastic.
I don’t think it’s me, either, since I can stll drink just as much Mt. Dew and other things.
JOSTA was the freaking -greatest-, though.
76. Darb - January 20th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
OK Soda was one of my Favorites it’s taste was kinda like when I Mixed up all the different kinds of pop at the A&W as a kid. Strange thing about crystal pepsi If you drink it with out looking at it it’s just like pepsi, If you Hold your nose and don’t smell it just look at it, then it tastes more like 7-up.
77. tarah - January 20th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
The other energy drink that went out? BAWLS. With the non slip grip for when your hands start shaking
78. DiscHuker - January 20th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
wow. hit a nerve with this list. is this the most agreed upon list so far? nobody really disagreeing just causing memory lane trips.
i worked in a my college’s bookstore for a huge sale that Surge was sponsoringand handing it out for free. at the end of the night i took home 250 cans that were left over. i was wired for quite awhile.
in northern california for a little while there was a drink marketed as “twice the caffeine as jolt”. (i can’t remember the name) it kinda tasted like jello but burned on the way down. it also stained the counter tops and turned your poop blue (the color of the soda).
now that’s soda-goodness.
79. Angelina - January 20th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Ok, first off, where I’m from, we called them soft drinks
Although I have heard of calling any soda “coke” for short and the always charming “sody pop”.
Good list!
Honorable mention? Teem, a bastardization of Sprite and 7-up. I haven’t seen this since the 80s.
Snorb: Diet rite! It was pretty bad from what I remember.
Do they still make RC Cola???
80. Jerry Elbow - January 20th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
The two I miss the most are Citra and Aspen. Citra was a citrus drink similar to Squirt or Sundrop, though substantially better than both (and I grew up on Squirt in Michigan and only found Citra for about a year after I moved to North Carolina 9 years ago and nobody here was selling Squirt). If I recall right, it was bottled by Coca-Cola.
Many years ago, while visiting my sister-in-law in Colorado, I came across Aspen, which was an apple-flavored sodo that I think was also bottle by Coca-Cola. It was actually very tasty and quite refreshing. And, of course, I never saw it anywhere else.
I never tried it, but somebody I once knew claimed to have tried a Teaberry soda that tasted just like the old Teaberry chewing gum. I’m not sure how weird that would be.
81. riledupone - January 20th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
RC Cola is still available, in Toronto anyhow. By the way I loved this list.
82. JoJo - January 20th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Josta!! Why won’t you call me? I miss you so…

BAWLS is everywhere in michigan.
84. Wil Welsh - January 20th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
The list is sorely missing Afri Cola. Unless its still being made somewhere…
85. Cali_angel - January 20th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
OMFG!!! I LOVED SURGE!!!! such a caffiene and sugar rush!!! I believe chucky Cheese still serves it but I wish they still mass produced it!
86. Edd - January 20th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
The best soda in soda history: Dr. Nut, the almond-flavored soda from World Bottling in New Orleans. Tasted like fizzy Amaretto. Tanked in the late 1960’s, I think (yes, I’m old).
87. Sariemarie - January 20th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
I miss Surge and desperately wish that Pepsi would start mass producing it again. I’ll never forget all those late nights in high school when my friends and I would chug several 2 liters in one night, daring each other to drink just “one more.” Best caffeine drink I’ve ever had.
88. Ian - January 20th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Does anybody remember OK Cola? Kind of a “Gen X” branded version of a “suicide” distributed by Coca-Cola circa 1992-94.
89. Sariemarie - January 20th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Oops! I meant I wish COCA COLA would mass produce it again!
90. Mariam67 - January 20th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Oh man, I so loved Orbitz. Come back, Orbitz! I miss you!
91. Ravyn - January 20th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
tarah: we still sell BAWLS here in Ohio, just like JoJo has all over Mich. The kinda stuff that makes you energetic and shakey. It is awesome.
92. DiscHuker - January 20th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
to quote the late great comedian Mitch Hedberg,
“Mr. Pibb is a poor imitation of Dr. Pepper. dude didn’t even get his degree.”
93. ThatGuyOverThere - January 20th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Josta was from pepsi, not coke.
and i miss it dearly.
Guarana Brazilia is still good though, but it’s also hard to find
94. malena992 - January 20th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Great list:D
..ohh i’m out of Coke damn it and it’s four in the morning.
maybe i’ll read the list again:P
95. azhippie - January 20th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Does anyone remember “Rondo” and it’s catch phrase, “Lightly carbonated so you can slam it down fast”!
96. april - January 20th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
They still have Bawls here in Florida, but I miss Crystal Pepsi dearly. It was the only Pepsi product I could get behind. What I’ve been searching for years for is Hires Root beer. I’ve heard of random sightings but I haven’t seen it in years, and it sure was tasty!
97. angry redhead - January 20th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
dammit, i miss sprite ice! yummy mix of minty lemon-lime-ness
98. Monkey - January 20th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Orbitz were great. I loved those things
99. Crimanon - January 20th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
I don’t believe anyone has mentioned Fresca and I’m not talking that artificially sweetened new age Crap. I’m talking the Straight out of the grapefruit sugary stuff. Awesome!
100. Sir Twist - January 20th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Pepsi Light - one of the first alternative diet sodas available (Diet Pepsi with lemon). I think they stopped production on this in the early to mid nineties.
101. corinthian0430 - January 20th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
I miss Lem-O-Lime (it’s a Coca-Cola product BTW)
102. frommi2co - January 20th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
I had a friend in high school that swore by SoCo and Surge
103. RBrown - January 20th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Slice is still in production and is a Pepsi product. I have to avoid caffeine and end up drinking Sprite, 7-Up or lemon lime Slice. Taco Bell on the East Coast is one that sells it.
104. PennyCentury - January 20th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Try www.bevnet.org, they list hundreds of sodas and energy drings, along with links to the official websites and also sales for those of us who live far away from the regional soda’s distribution (Cheerwine, Big Red, Moxie, Vernor’s, etc
105. Matt - January 20th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
you can still buy all discontinued coke products. they still make them. you just have to buy them out of factory from the nearest coke distributor. i have been getting my surge that way for 6 years
106. daytona boogie - January 20th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
who remembers dr.slice, it was blood red for some reason. delish!
107. MartinSkink - January 20th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Crystal Pepsi a huge hit in the UP, eh?
Circle K in Marquette, Michigan? HA!!!
Be wary of this writer’s yarns, good people. He is a fabricator and embellisher to be sure, but his motives are still a mystery to me. Hmmmm….I’ll have to dig deeper on this. BE WARNED!
108. Rachel Graham - January 20th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Has anyone seen Jolt Cola lately? Used to drink it all the time. It did give a good jolt.
Also I was told that coke’s C2 has been discontinued. We loved it, it tasted just like coke with only half the sugar. It dissapeard last fall and a grocery clerk told me it was not available anymore. BooHoo!
I grew up calling it TONIC, not soda or pop. I guess it’s all regional.
109. Mike - January 20th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Holy crap someone besides me remembers Rondo!! that stuff was the best ever, we always used to get it after soccer practice when we were kids. had that ugly brown and yellow can, I actually was fishing a couple of years ago and saw a rusted out bleached out rondo can in the creek…
Texas still sells Bawls,i saw it the other day. Big red is still huge down here…too sugary sweet for me, like liquid bubble gum. I still remember the original Diet dr pepper, with the blue label…tasted like total crap. Most places around here carry 2 kinds of dr pepper, the usual stuff sold everywhere, and the kind made with imperial cane sugar, following the orignal recipe. I prefer the corn syrup…i guess its what i grew up on, but my folks remember the real sugar, so thats all they drink now.
110. Mike - January 20th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
PS. In texas, most soft drinks, sodas, etc, are all collectively referred to as “coke”,(by most natives anyway) which is a general term i use for taking a break. be it go to the bathroom, go outside, just a general break from what im doing, i say im going to go get a coke.
111. Joshua - January 20th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Mannn…I remember Crystal Pepsi….I thought it tasted like band-aids smell…awful! And I remember when Josta came out in like 95 or 96, I live in south Texas, and I swear it tastes just like the Tamarindo soda they import from Mexico….good stuff. If you miss the taste, you ought to find some and try it.
112. Matt - January 20th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
OK soda (or was it cola??) was one of my favorites - namely because it had the 1-800 number to go with it about how you would drink it and then feel “OK”. I must have pranked that phone line like a thousand times. Oh the memories.
113. cva175 - January 20th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
My uncle used to own a beverage distribution company in upstate NY, i rememebr many of these beverages, most of all Orbitz, i remember my cousin and i sitting back on hot summer days pounding down as many orbitz as we could. Brings back Good Memories ! THanks for posting
114. Miss Destiny - January 20th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Zubby - I didn’t know Vernor’s was a Michigan thing, because it’s pretty big here in the Buffalo, NY area too. Interesting! (Personally I think the stuff’s disgusting!)
Ravyn - I must have drank enough Surge, they didn’t trick me!
Now Frito Lay just needs to bring back the 3D Doritos and I’ll be set. =]]
115. B-radiculous - January 20th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Big Red is the greatest soda on earth…Red colored cream soda.
117. D - January 21st, 2008 at 12:06 am
i remember that orbits crap. the first and only time i had that, i at first didnt know what to do with those little round things in it, but eventually one got stuck in my throat and i coughed them all out. talk about a fucked up feeling having a thousand of those shooting out.
118. sue - January 21st, 2008 at 12:10 am
i liked pepsi max.dont know if its still manufactured, havent seen it in years
119. jfrater - January 21st, 2008 at 12:15 am
Sue: Pepsi Max is available in the UK and NZ at least - not sure about elsewhere though. I prefer Diet Pepsi to Pepsi Max as I think it tastes less like a diet drink.
120. Ravyn - January 21st, 2008 at 12:27 am
mmmmm Vernor’s
sorry had to say it
121. csamp - January 21st, 2008 at 12:28 am

122. Jayden79 - January 21st, 2008 at 12:59 am
Brings back many memories… Looked a few of these up on Wikipedia and you can find alot of background information on these sodas. Slice is not totally dead, just another case of being in hiding. Seems Wal-Mart is the big seller for Slice-One, sporting a few different flavors, but changed the name due to using Splenda in all of the variations. I have a restaurant and bar in Illinois, and I grew up drinking RC Cola. I had thought that it had disappeared, along with Diet Rite, but currently that is what I sell at my place and people come in alot of times just to have one or the other. Diet Rite did change to using Splenda, versus Nutrasweet in the original formula. There is even a whole Wikipedia page for discontinued sodas and there were a few more on there that I am sure would drum up some lost memories for alot of people.
123. Jayden79 - January 21st, 2008 at 1:10 am
Doing a little more Wiki’ing…. You can even look up nearly all of the current sodas in all markets worldwide. I see alot of them that I’ve had while vacationing in other areas of the US, like Birch Beer, which is kinda like root beer, but made from birch trees versus sassafras. Just Wiki “soft drinks” and check it out.
124. Drogo - January 21st, 2008 at 1:52 am
I drank Surge back in the late ’90’s. One day my buddy Jimmy and I were driving, listening to the radio, and drinking Surge. A loose wire blew a fuse and the radio quit. So we entertained ourselves by having a burping contest. After a while I announced, “We don’t need a radio, we got Surge!” Jimmy laughed so hard Surge almost came out his nose. Maybe you had to be there, maybe it was the caffiene and sugar, or maybe it’s just that Jimmy was wEiRd. I miss Surge.
125. dimebottle55 - January 21st, 2008 at 1:55 am
coke II did taste more like pepsi, and the first time i tried “surge”, i was up for a day and a half. Jolt, i thought was weak, and tasted like the old howard johnson brand canned sodas i used to pick up on the way through chicago in the 70s.
i do remember the original in the glass bottle fresca and tab products. both tasted fine to me, and i agree about chemical sweeteners. but does any one remember “Like” cola? their tag line was “it isn’t LIKE a cola, it IS a cola!” early 80s if i’m not mistaken. possible 7-up product.
i can easily buy vernor’s or faygo sodas at the woodman’s fine store. and not to forget mountain dew in the green glass bottle. “bottled by maw and paw” and it’s effervescence is so strong it shoots the bottle cork right through the brim on “paw’s” hat.

Afri Cola find it all over in Germany.
127. English Ex-pat - January 21st, 2008 at 4:38 am
Being an English ex-pat I arrived in time only to try about half of these- the other half being gone before I moved here.
But one drink I used to love back in England that I wish they sold in the US (I believe it is a Coke product):
LILT
Simply the best sode- pineapple grapefruit. The only thing that disturbs me is the name- sounds similar to milt, which if I remember from biology correctly is fish sperm.
128. tgrail - January 21st, 2008 at 6:14 am
I remember Surge very well, pretty tasty by my accounts, the one that really got me were the flavored pepsi’s and Josta cola, man they sold that thing where I lived for maybe 7 months and then poof. I think I saw someone posting about the mexican apple soda manzana, now here in Chicago you can find it at some local corner shops along with Mexican coke and pepsi which is still made with real sugar and comes in this real heavy glass bottle, costs a little more but well worth it.
By the way where’s Citra on the list? That coca-cola copy of Squirt.

ZELTSER SELTSER AND CHEERWINE ARE STILL CLASSICS IN MY BOOK
130. Brandon Goode - January 21st, 2008 at 7:13 am
Man I loved me some crystal pepsi as well. I recently moved home to TX where any soda is a coke, still trying to re-adjust to saying that. Before I left TX (1991) we had shasta here, Cream Soda in particular I was hooked on. Anyone know what happened to Shasta???? or where I might procure some of this tasty “coke”
thanx,
spawny@gmail.com
131. Jeff - January 21st, 2008 at 7:23 am
OK Soda was never “officially” released nationwide. I can picture it on the Harding’s shelf in Parchment, MI, but I don’t ever remember seeing it anywhere else. Any of you who loved the advertising campaign need to listen to the song “Tastes Like OK Soda” by Dillinger 4.
I’ve never seen Manzanita Sol in the US, but on a class trip to Mexico, there were a few of us who chugged about 3 or 4 a day. Good stuff.
Also, bring back Crystal Pepsi and Van Halen-backed commercials.
132. jimmy - January 21st, 2008 at 7:28 am
A few years ago while searching my cabinets I found a Six Pack I had put back of Coke produced before “New” Coke, it does not have the “Classic” on the can. Haven’t had the courage to try a taste.
133. Jeff - January 21st, 2008 at 7:28 am
Dang - Smells Like OK Soda by Dillinger 4.
134. Grumpus - January 21st, 2008 at 7:29 am
Tab, RC Cola, Diet Rite, and (surprisingly) Vernor’s are available here in central VA. Vernor’s was always a Michigan/Great Lakes phenom, but apparently y’all’s transplants have brought the demand for it here. BTW, Josta and it’s rival Jaguar were the best!!!
135. Grumpus - January 21st, 2008 at 7:30 am
WHODATHUNKIT: Are you from NC? It seems Cheerwine and/or SunDrop are the state beverages for Tarheels. I like ‘em, but not as much as Mr. Pibb/MelloYello

Vanilla Coke
138. James - January 21st, 2008 at 7:37 am
Sundrop is a way of life in Middle Tennessee. Most folks who move away have relatives bring a trunk load to them when they visit. Also, very high in caffeine.
139. Grumpus - January 21st, 2008 at 7:52 am
JAMES- They finally started carrying Sundrop in Kroger stores here about a year ago. I think it’s also big in WV (must be the mountains)…
140. Grumpus - January 21st, 2008 at 7:53 am
Anyone remember Hires Root Beer? I’m sure it’s still around, but I can’t find it anymore. Mug’s just not the same.
141. jfrater - January 21st, 2008 at 7:56 am
hmm - speaking of root beer - what it is made of? I really like it.
142. roxy - January 21st, 2008 at 8:02 am
Stew! I was looking, but did not find my 2 favorite sodas of my youth:
Green River & Jolt
Green River came in a cool 2 liter bottle my mom would pick up from the Food Lion. It had a simple label with a river and the moon, and the bottle was green. Tasted a lot sweeter than Sprite, more like sucking a lime dipped in sugar, but not as syrup-y as modern Mountain Dew.
Now Jolt? Many a night during my rave phase did I consume nothing but Jolt to dance the night away. Now that I think about it, how else could I have remained on the dance floor, jerking and dancing, crazy lights and glow sticks a-plenty, from Midnight to 8 a.m.? as far as I was concerned, back in 1994, Jolt was the only “energy” drink I could afford!
ringtailroxy
p.s. i believe both of these sodas are still made now, but in very limited quantites…
143. Melissa - January 21st, 2008 at 8:04 am
From Wikipedia -
“Bark from the roots of Sassafras tree is the typical flavor in root beer. It can be complimented with other flavorful ingredients, for instance vanilla, cherry tree bark, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, artificial sassafras root bark flavoring (the natural form is mildly carcinogenic), nutmeg, anise, and molasses among other ingredients in some cases including caffeine.”
There’s your answer, jfrater. =)
144. jfrater - January 21st, 2008 at 8:09 am
Melissa: thanks! Judging by the inclusion of some of those ingredients is it the same thing as sarsaparilla?
145. jfrater - January 21st, 2008 at 8:18 am
Hey - for the kiwis reading the list - do you remember when dairies used to have great big giant leed bottles on their roofs? Some had fanta bottles instead. Do they still do that?
146. mitchsn - January 21st, 2008 at 8:31 am
#4 with the little jelly (actually its probably tapioca) thing can probably be traced to Vietnamese Boba drinks that you can try in most Vietnamese Pho noodle restaurants here in America.
147. SocialButterfly - January 21st, 2008 at 8:32 am
I remember orbitz, I hated that stuff…I could not get over the texture.
I remember Crystal Pepsi being called Pepsi Clear here in Canada… I had a severe allergic reaction and ended up getting hives everywhere!
148. Servines - January 21st, 2008 at 8:35 am
Let’s not forget Pepsi Free, the original Diet Pepsi.
149. Rat Fink - January 21st, 2008 at 8:35 am
Hire’s used to sell packets to make your own rootbeer…put it in canning jars. When you opened them..blue smoke would come out. My mom made it strong so it wouldn’t lose its zip in ice. They still sell Hire’s in WVa. Anyone remember…Double Cola, Upper Ten, Moonshine, Kickapoo Joy Juice, Yoo-Hoo (still made I think)Remember Fizz Tabs? Big Red?
150. jfrater - January 21st, 2008 at 8:35 am
SocialButterfly - that is crazy! What was the ingredient that caused it?
mitchsn: does that taste like orbitz? I never liked that drink but I seem to recall that the balls were were very gelatinous - does tapioca go that consistency?
151. John - January 21st, 2008 at 8:40 am
Um in case you didn’t know this. Surge is still sold. It just has a different name. I used to drink that crap all the time since my high school had machines of the stuff with can’s costing 15 cents and 35 for a 20 oz when the stuff first came out. If you want Surge it now comes in a Container called Vault. The exact same ingredients list I checked and it tastes exactly the same. Oh did I mention Vault is made by Coke so um yeah same stuff.

RAT FINK- I think Kikapoo was bought out by/turned into Mountain Dew. And Yoo-Hoo is very big here. Nothing beats an ice cold one on a hot day. BTW, you know what one of it’s primary ingredients is?
157. stinkylovecake - January 21st, 2008 at 9:50 am
its not pop… let me explain why… the full name is Soda Pop correct? Yes! so calling it soda is by its first name the only people who walk around calling people by ther last names are douche’s and should be kicked in the privbates u all know who im talking about those annoying guys who think they are all that or something walking around calling everyone by there last name well now u have make it 10 times worse by calling drinks by there last name
158. Explosion - January 21st, 2008 at 9:52 am
Pepsi Blue… how I loved that stuff. It tasted so good and was discontinued. I cried that day for hours.
159. SurferDoc - January 21st, 2008 at 9:58 am
Pepsi Lite, the lemon flavored one…Godawful! Somebody called it “Pepsico’s way of saying fvck you to consumers.”
160. TMo - January 21st, 2008 at 10:01 am
Pepsi Blue! I feel your pain, Explosion.
I miss Josta, too, that shit was delicious. And I totally forgot about the tantalizing Surge and sexy(?) Slice.
The bubble tea stuff reminds me of Orbitz.
161. downhighway61 - January 21st, 2008 at 10:04 am
it’s soda. no, it’s pop. no, it’s cola.
it’s just regional dialects, like saying buggy for shopping cart, or tennis shoes for sneakers. big deal.
by the way, it’s totally soda and sneakers, anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong! new yorkers never get anything wrong.
162. chsrocket47 - January 21st, 2008 at 10:09 am
if you drank enough surge it would mess u up for a couple of days haha
163. Caroline - January 21st, 2008 at 10:31 am
Pepsi Max is sold in the UK and its the best, I drink it by the gallon, so much nicer than Diet Pepsi. Since I’ve been drinking it so much I hate the taste of Diet Coke (I only drink diet drinks). And if you’re referring to the Pepsi Light i’m thinking of its sold in Europe mainland (well, Café Nero sells it), along with Coca Light etc, and they all taste vile. We have this new stuff called Coke Plus which is diet coke with vitamins in and its disgusting, its like herbal tea mixed with coke. Also Five Alive is still in the UK.
Vanilla Coke is still here along with the lemon and lime pepsi’s.
If you live in the UK Tesco took the energy drink Red Devil out of production, that broke my heart! Its cherry flavoured and kept me alive at work!! boooo :(.
164. FastFingers - January 21st, 2008 at 10:33 am
They forgot my personal favorite - Aspen! Remember, it was an apple flavored soda that came out either in the late 70s or early 80s??? I absolutely LOVED it!!!
165. Liverboy - January 21st, 2008 at 10:47 am
I agree. I miss Aspen and of course who could forget Rondo - The Thirst Crusher. It was, after all, less carbonated “so you could slam it down fast!” A couple of those, a Marathon bar and playing Star Castle in the back of 7-11 is how I spend my tween years.

Oh man. Tropical Chill Pepsi. The best soda EVER.
I’ve never before or since loved a soda like I loved that. I had ONE can of it left in my fridge for like 6 months after it was discontinued. I couldn’t bring myself to drink it.
167. EAL - January 21st, 2008 at 11:30 am
I found a bottle of Crystal Pepsi in my basement. I think Holday Spice Pepsi should be on this list, but I may be the only one who liked it.
168. mowi - January 21st, 2008 at 11:31 am
lol, so many comments on a soda list.
anyway here’s a funny Crystal Pepsi related skit:

169. Dr. Goodtimes - January 21st, 2008 at 11:32 am
Do you think if we pooled some money together we could buy the Crystal Pepsi recipe from Pepsi and make it in our bathtubs?
From Wikipedia: “In 2003, 55 gallon drums of the beverage were found in a storm drain in Denver, Colorado, and later sold on eBay.”
If only I had known!!!!!

Jesus Christ!! so many comments already on a bunch of sodas!! Folks sure have a lot to say today..
173. bobrox - January 21st, 2008 at 12:26 pm
the first diet drink i ever liked was diet cherry cola slice. it was good and didn’t have a aftertaste like nearly all diet sodas before that. i miss that shit!
174. vagabundus - January 21st, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Guarana’ was/is the national drink of Brasil. (Perhaps after Beer and caffe)
Two biggest brands are Antarctica and Brahma. I liked the Antarctica best. The guarana’ drinks I found here were too sweet.
The “little gob things in the soda” can be found on the West Coast–in Thai restaurants! They call it “bubble soda” and I have seen a few indie versions. So if you’re nostalgic for hacking up slime, you have a variety of new possibilities. . .perhaps take it next door with some calamari sushi?
175. T - January 21st, 2008 at 1:16 pm
OK Soda was great. It even had the cans that looked like beer cans. I was hooked as a kid
176. Johnny T - January 21st, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I’m glad someone mentioned Pepsi Blue. I liked coke alot more than the pepsi company until that sweet nectar pepsie blue came out.
177. huskyowner - January 21st, 2008 at 1:18 pm
I see a few mentions of “Rondo” it has to best the best discontinued soft drink. It hasn’t been around for years and yet there are still those of us who remember it wistfully.
I’ll also chime in on the root beer topic. Frosty, Dad’s and Hires in that order, there are no other decent root beers. Although the Big River Grille in Chattanooga, TN does make a mighty fine runner-up.
178. questionablemuffins - January 21st, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Good list….
MMMMMM GUARANA…
Pepsi came out with some tropical blend during the summer. i mistakenly picked it up and bought it… it was horrible.
orange slice is the best…
i remember seeing the commercials for crystal pepsi when i was 10 and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. but it disappeared as fast as it came…..
179. Jade - January 21st, 2008 at 1:21 pm
does anyone remember the clear pepsi?
180. Brandon - January 21st, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Every soda in america that was put into glass bottles should be remembered. That’s why I love foreign countries…still have glass bottles.
181. jfrater - January 21st, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Brandon: I agree completely - considering the amount of noise people make over keeping the planet green - surely we should revert to glass bottles which can be reused!
182. Tony Glassman - January 21st, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Orbit, Hubba Bubba and Crystal Pepsi. There is my youth in Michigan. Heading to 7-11 on lunch and grabbing Hubba Bubba soda and some smokes…Ah, those were the days.
183. Tyree - January 21st, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Eric Blade: Probably the reason Vault makes you sick and Surge didn’t is because Vault is actually an energy drink. Surge just had a bunch of caffeine.
184. heatherrrr. - January 21st, 2008 at 2:26 pm
what a fun list! and from a fellow small-towned ass-backward michigander!! we can do great things..haha
185. buster hymen - January 21st, 2008 at 2:34 pm
my wife and i were walking thru a mall in the early 90’s, and a woman asked if i’d be willing to do a blind taste test. after Crystal Pepsi came out, i realized that was what i had been tasting , along with 2 regular sodas. I remember telling the lady i didn’t like it, and i wouldn’t buy it if it were on the market. it had a strong saccarin-like taste @ the time. i guess i was in the majority.
186. maxwell - January 21st, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Ramblin’ Root Beer is one I remember from the early 80’s. I think it was part of the Fanta family. It was always sold with them anyways. Root beer pretty much all tastes the same.
187. BENMAN - January 21st, 2008 at 2:45 pm
JOLT!!!
188. DiscHuker - January 21st, 2008 at 3:05 pm
husky owner: there is one root beer to rule them all…
Abita.
they are a microbrew beer company from louisiana who also cook up some root-brew. their taste advantage comes from them using sugar cane, abundant in south lousiana, instead of corn syrup. oh an icy cold bottle of abita makes me quiver.
189. huskyowner - January 21st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I’m headed there tomorrow. (seriously) I’ll pick up a case or two to try. Another thing that I have found in LA that you can’t pick up anywhere else is Zatarain’s root beer extract. I’m still experimenting with the mixture to get a really good consistent recipe.
190. Stormy617 - January 21st, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I really miss pop being sold in glass bottles, I used to have it down just right on how long to leave a glass bottle of Mountain Dew in the freezer so that when I took it out and popped the top off you could watch it just slush right down. YUM that was the best way to drink one!!!!!
I am a Michigander and Faygo is huge here and Vernor is great when you are sick…..it really helps an upset stomach……..I have tried other types of Ginger Ale and it just doesn’t work the same.
191. DiscHuker - January 21st, 2008 at 3:35 pm
in texas they have a chain of grocery stores called “central market”. they don’t have the widest overall selection but whatever they do sell, they have an enormous variety to choose from. something like 1500 kinds of cheese, 30 something apples, etc, etc.
they have a root beer section, at least the one by my old house in fort worth, with about 30 different brews represented. i used to get a different 6 pack every week or so. fun stuff to be able to look for subtle differences without having to travel the whole country.
192. Nirmal - January 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
WHERE IS PEPSI KONA????? i loved orbit.
193. FifthSonata - January 21st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
What about pepsi blue? I didn’t read through all the comments here to see if someone mentioned it yet….
Of all of them, Orbitz was my favorite. Me and my little middle-school friends would drink this stuff until we’d feel sick. The only downside was the price–it was $1 per bottle! Back in the early 90s that was expensive for a soda, even a 20oz pepsi didn’t cost a dollar.
However, I had no idea hubba bubba made a soda. Did it taste anything like the cola bubble gum?
194. bsn - January 21st, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Anyone else remember “Like” cola? I loverd that back in the 80s.
195. Celt - January 21st, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I still have an unopened bottle of Orbitz, I bought it in 1997 in Seward, AK. Now I live in IL and the colored balls have now faded… could never get myself to drink it.
196. FifthSonata - January 21st, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Stormy617–coke recently started selling soda in glass bottles again. They’re pretty expensive.
Jones soda makes glass bottles as well as Crush!

Here’s one I haven’t seen yet…Chocolate Soldier. It was a watered down chocolate soda, a midwest version of Yoohoo. Used to drink it a lot in the ’60’s in Kansas.
198. copperdragon - January 21st, 2008 at 9:36 pm
is it pop or is it soda? guess it depends on where you live.
you can still get Slice, right?
wasnt there a strawberry soda at one time? welch’s maybe?
199. shepherd - January 21st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
RC Cola is still made, we have a RC distributer about 30 miles south of us in south central Indiana. Around here they also dist. Kick. It was great until they changed it’s formula, had a battery acid after taste to it that lead to it’s downfall.
200. Leah - January 21st, 2008 at 10:02 pm
OMG! ORBITZ! Yes! I was in middle school when that stuff came out. I always drank it because… well, I was a sheep and everyone else did. It tasted disgusting…
201. Pixiebumm - January 21st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
I still have two bottles of Orbitz sitting on my desk. Found one at a hot dog vendor like 2 years back. DEFINITELY didn’t want to drink it, but totally had to have it. It’s taken the other bottle I’ve had for nearly a decade now, a good 4 or 5 years for all the little orbity balls to sink mostly to the bottom. Oh, how I miss that most magical of drinks!
202. Megzor - January 21st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
I’m glad I saw someone else missing Pepsi Blue. Mmm. . . so sugary.
Josta was also fantastic. I remember the summer it came out they were marketing it so hard that different places would give away free cases. My friends and I managed to snag enough to drink it the whole summer without having to buy any. Of course, that may be why they stopped making it. Who needs to buy it when they’re getting it free.
203. A Girl - January 21st, 2008 at 11:32 pm
There was a coke product (I think it was coke) and I swear to goodness that every single bottle tasted different. My sisters and I had this wicked idea that they were just mixing left over pop from the days batches and repackaging it to save money.
I know that sounds insane.
Does anyone know what I’m talking about? At all?
204. Mark - January 22nd, 2008 at 12:47 am
Pepsi Blue was where it was at.
205. Diaz - January 22nd, 2008 at 4:55 am
I loved Pepsi Blue! There is a petition on the internet I signed a while ago to bring Pepsi Blue back. Everybody should look it up and sigh it. Maybe our dreams will come true.
206. TJ - January 22nd, 2008 at 7:42 am
Rondo was the BOMB!!!! Of course, we are showing our age by remembering that stuff.
Orbitz was the only one on the list I remotely miss…
207. briano06 - January 22nd, 2008 at 9:11 am
JOSTA was the best drink ever!!!!!…..coke needs to bring it back
208. DiscHuker - January 22nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
cooperdragon: mmmmmm, strawberry carbonation. welch’s strawberry takes me back to days at the neighborhood pool during the summers of the early 90’s. red stains around my mouth from the drink, playing gin rummy or BS, eating cheeto’s or hot fries then getting in the water playing some sharks and minnows and staring at the older teenage girls in their bikinis and wishing i could make out with the lifeguard like the kid from “sandlot”.
thanks for the kick down memory lane.
209. Ralph - January 22nd, 2008 at 11:12 am
I used to drink surge all the time! I won a game boy pocket and all kids of hats and CDs from them!
210. CK - January 22nd, 2008 at 11:27 am
I won a Surge alarm clock when I was in high school. I was actually trying to buy Coke but the machine had run out. I still have the clock, I put it in the guest room as somewhat of a joke. When the alarm goes off, this really loud dude starts yelling, “SURGE! SURGE!!!”
My husband still has two bottles of Orbitz. He just thought they were neat to look at. Think they’re worth anything? =P
211. stretch - January 22nd, 2008 at 12:04 pm
its all about big red. the ambiguous red drink. to this day, i still cant describe the flavor. jolt was ok. next lists and my top votes: best gum: ice cubes; worst gum: altoids; novelty gum: gatorade gum
212. Elvis - January 22nd, 2008 at 12:48 pm
What about blue pepsi?! that should be #1. I seriously wish they would bring that back. Its not like people wouldn’t buy it and they lose money. I don’t even drink pop anymore but I would if they brought blue pepsi back!
213. copperdragon - January 22nd, 2008 at 1:34 pm
dischuker: i would usually get a stomach-ache after only 2 cans of Welch’s strawberry.
stretch: i remember big red! (mom thought fruit-flavored sodas were healthy!!)
214. moose. - January 22nd, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Haven’t read all of the comments but it looks like nobody remembers Pepsi Blue! It’s pretty recent but that stuf was awesome. I was expecting it at number 1 :[

Ha! Elvis! Nice!
Didn’t see that one ^^^
Pepsi Blue rules.
216. TMo - January 22nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
dude, i know from the incessant emails that pepsi blue is the number 1 most mentioned soda in the comments… rightly so, though, but i keep getting damn emails that all say “oh my god, nobody remembered pepsi blue!” but they did. everyone remembers pepsi blue, 700 people have talked about it already, and the next comment will be, “oh my god, nobody remembered pepsi blue!”
217. dwa - January 22nd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Back in the 60s there were some sodas that came and went. VEEP was a sugar free lemon/lime soda that was advertised “Make a ‘V’ for Veep, the drink that’s light, Veep never spoils your appetite.” Really.
Another was called WINK, a Canada Dry product. It was grapefruit flavored and I loved it.
In DC, Rock Creek beverages had this stuff call Cherry Smash and Orange Crush. Good. May still be around.
218. BrotherMan - January 22nd, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I have heard that Hubba Bubba soda is still available but it is exclusive to 7-11 gas stations only. I read this online some place while searching to see if it is still made. I don’t know how old the information is, but it keeps me hopeful. I just wish that there was a 7-11 in my area. The closest one is in the next state.
219. TMo - January 22nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm

sorry TMo, i only read the first 10 or 20 comments
and dwa, Orange Crush isn’t discontinued! Far from it. In fact, it’s everywhere around here. Also grape, cream soda, and lime(not lemon-lime) crush. I love crush.
226. moose. - January 22nd, 2008 at 4:43 pm
oh and Pepsi Blue deserves to be discussed heavily. Love that stuff.
227. RainmanDance - January 22nd, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Does anyone remember O.K. soda? That pop was awesome! It only stuck around for like a year or so (at least where I lived) and was avaliable at Holiday stores. They even had a phone line you could call.
228. FifthSonata - January 22nd, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Next I think we should see a list about discontinued cereals or chips…or the weirdest cereals or chips? Weirdest fast-food products?
I was definitely freaked out when I saw Sonic had started selling fried pickles and when I saw pickle-flavored potato chips.
229. moose. - January 22nd, 2008 at 5:16 pm
#196: They’ve always sold coke in glass bottles here, and it’s like…69 cents or something. You can also get Sprite here and there, and once in a blue moon Pepsi or 7up.
I love how it’s against the law to sell canned and most bottled beverages. Although somebody told me they very recently got rid of that law :[
230. moose. - January 22nd, 2008 at 5:20 pm
lol fifthsonata. Dill Pickle chips have been popular here for years and years. We have some crazy kinds like buffalo wings, sour cream and onion/bacon/cheddar (take your pick), sea salt and pepper, etc.
231. caboose - January 22nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
I remember Pepsi marketing a tropical flavored drink called “Pepsi Samba” The reason I remember it so well is because it tasted VERY close to Bourbon and Coke (Well Pepsi). I think it came out around 2005-2006. Not sure if it was marketed in the states though.
232. FifthSonata - January 22nd, 2008 at 9:58 pm
HA
Yeah, I’ve seen all those crazy flavors. Maybe I’m just getting too old to be a reliable judgement on what’s normal these days.
caboose–I have seen Pepsi Samba. It wasn’t marketed in the states, but I definitely knew about it.
BUT
the reason I come back to this list is that I found JOLT cola GUM at a local convenience store. It has “just as much caffeine as a cup of coffee” in one serving and the whole package equaling six cups of coffee. It has the warning label in big bold letters. My favorite part about it is:
“This product is as safe as coffee or energy drinks”
233. Megan - January 22nd, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Rondo is called Solo now, and is really common here in Australia. Unfortunately though, I’ve never heard most of those other drinks before. Although, I seem to remember a drink similar to Orbitz from quite a while ago. Can’t remember what it was called, though. Pepsi Max is sold in Australia too.
234. Stormy617 - January 23rd, 2008 at 1:48 am
Is Grape or Orange Nehi still available anywhere?? They used to sell it around here but I don’t see it anywhere any more. And this will probably only be recognized by people from Michigan I am not sure cause I think it was local. Does any one remember Towne Club pop? I remember back a long long time ago when i was a kid going to the Towne Club store (that was all they sold) and picking out what different flavors to get…..they must have had at least a hundred ……my favorite was the orange pineapple and the Black Cherry it was great it came in wooden crates that you paid a deposit for and returned the bottles in.
235. Stormy617 - January 23rd, 2008 at 3:08 am
Oh yea PEACH Nehi too that was the shit!!!!
236. Gmung - January 23rd, 2008 at 5:05 am
I use to live in Colorado Springs in the late 70s. There was a soda called Aspen, it had a strong citrus flavor mixed with green apple. Best stuff ever. Was discontinued.
237. BrotherMan - January 23rd, 2008 at 11:12 am
I just thought about this weird Pepsi limited addition that I found during the Christmas season maybe a year or two or three ago…I forget. It was a “Christmasy” Pepsi that had a cinnamon flavoring added to it and a slightly red hue when held up to a light. It tasted like Pepsi with a bunch of Red Hots candies added to it. Drinking it with vodka gave a Gold Schlager taste. Pretty weird drink. I was unable to finish the entire 20 oz. bottle. I have not seen it since.
238. TMo - January 23rd, 2008 at 11:19 am
Brother:
Holiday Spice Pepsi, yo! Good with booze, bad without.
239. parkay - January 23rd, 2008 at 2:42 pm
i haven’t had a nehi peach in years. in college we used to mix bourbon with nehi peach to make georgia julips.
fyi, dr pepper merged with 7-up several years ago and started buying up all sorts of brands. dr pepper/7-up was acquired by cadbury schweppes.
the cadbury schweppes product line includes 7UP, A&W Root Beer, Canada Dry, Crush, Diet Rite, Dr Pepper, Hires, I.B.C. Root Beer, Nantucket Nectars, RC Cola, Schweppes, Squirt, Stewart’s, Sunkist, Peñafiel, Vernors, Welch’s, Country Time, Deja Blue, Hawaiian Punch, Snapple, Yoo-hoo, Sundrop, Orangina.
as for shasta, the only time i have seen it in the last couple of years is at the assisted living facility where my grandmother is living. i guess shasta probably has several deals with hospitals and other health care facilities.

Any one remember Aspen. It was an apple flavored soda. Late 70s I think. great stuff. And a more recent one, RC premium draft cola. about ten years ago. Only came in bottles for like 5 bucks a sixpack. That is, until Target got it on close out. bought every case they had. Saved one of the bottles

OH MAN I used to LIVE for orbitz. Crytal pepsi was also pretty awesome - they should bring it back (I would drink it if it came back because there’s no coloring to stain your teeth!!)
250. Robert - January 25th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Did anyone mention Pepsi-Free?? My grandmother used to buy that in the 80’s back in Michigan. In fact, the movie Back to the Future, Marty orders one. I am in Minnesota now and found a store that sells
