Top 20 Cool Facts About New Zealand
- Published June 19, 2008 - 302 Comments
As most of you will now know, I am living in New Zealand (the place of my birth). Before leaving the UK I decided that I would write a list specifically about my home land. It has taken a while to get to it – but here it is! Hopefully some of the other New Zealand readers will be able to contribute additional facts.
1. While it is no longer the case, New Zealand was once governed as a part of the territory of New South Wales (later a part of Australia). When Australia federated in 1901, New Zealand was offered a place as one of their states. New Zealand refused and is its own country with no ties (other than economic and commonwealth) to Australia.
2. A kiwi is not a fruit – it is New Zealand’s native flightless bird (pictured above) and a slang term for a New Zealander. Kiwis call the fruit “kiwifruit” – they are also known as Chinese Gooseberries.
3. New Zealand was the first major nation to have universal suffrage. In 1893 it became legal for all male and female citizens of New Zealand to vote.
4. New Zealand was first discovered by Europeans in 1642 when Dutch sailor Abel Tasman arrived. He left New Zealand after several of his crew were killed by Maoris, and it was not until 1769 that English Captain James Cook arrived and mapped the land.
5. Queen Elizabeth II is officially Queen of New Zealand. She is represented in New Zealand by a Governor General, who ratifies all laws put before him or her by the elected parliament of New Zealand.
6. New Zealand is one of only three countries that have two official (and of equal standing) national Anthems. The first is God Save the Queen (the English National Anthem) and the other is God Defend New Zealand. The other two countries with two anthems are Denmark and Canada which both have a Royal Anthem and a State anthem.
7. Another native bird of New Zealand (the Moa) was one of the largest birds in history – standing up to 3.6m (12 foot) tall and weighing 300kg. Unfortunately they were hunted to extinction by the Maoris by the end of the 1500s.
8. When the Europeans arrived in New Zealand, it was already inhabited by the Maori people – Eastern polynesian settlers who arrived some time between 800 and 1300. Oral tradition says that they came from a place named Hawaiki; its location is unknown. The very strong linguistic connection to Cook Island Maori might suggest that they originated from that region of the Pacific.
9. Another group of settlers (who most likely came from the same group as the original Maoris) settled on the Chatham Islands. They were called the Morioris and they were pacifists. In 1835, groups of Maoris moved to the Chatham islands and wiped out nearly all of the Morioris – leaving only 100 by 1862. The last full-blooded Moriori (Tommy Solomon) died in 1933. 10. New Zealand was the first country to have its three top positions of power held simultaneously by women: The Prime Minister (Helen Clark), the Governor General (Dame Silvia Cartwright), and the Chief Justice (Sian Elias).
11. New Zealand has a strong hold on the international trade in sheep meat. There are presently around 9 sheep to every 1 human in New Zealand (the population of New Zealand is 4 million).
12. Wellington, the Capital City of New Zealand (and home to me!) is the southernmost capital city in the world. [Image: Wellington City]
13. New Zealand was forced out of the ANZUS (Australia, New Zealand, United States) alliance in the 1980s when it outlawed nuclear arms and power. To this day, there are no nuclear power stations in New Zealand, and a change of law would be required before one could be built. New Zealand retains its military ties with the United Kingdom.
14. New Zealand has one of the most liberal media arenas in the world. Distinctly left wing versus right wing press is not as obvious there as in other nations.
15. New Zealand is a plastic nation – almost all personal financial transactions are made with a card – credit or otherwise. Most shops offer EFTPOS (similar to the UK Chip and Pin which appeared two years later) and cash is seen less and less. It is possible that New Zealand was the first nation to offer this system of payment (if someone can verify that I would appreciate it). The majority of taxis now allow you to pay without cash through this system.
16. New Zealand is a fairly liberal nation with homosexual marriage (Civil Union) being legal and prostitution, soliciting, and brothel keeping being legal. The driving age is 15, the consensual sex age is 16, and the drinking age is 18 (though minors accompanied by adults are allowed alcohol in restaurants).
17. Lake Taupo (one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations) was the source of the largest known eruption in the world in the last 70 thousand years. It had a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8. It released over 530 cubit kilometers of magma. [Image: Lake Taupo]
18. New Zealand was the last major landmass to be populated (with the exception of the polar regions).
19. New Zealander and Nobel Prize Winner, Ernest Rutherford is known as the father of nuclear physics for his orbital theory of the atom.
20. Sir Edmund Hillary – the first man to reach the peak of Mount Everest was a New Zealander (born in Auckland) and his face is on the New Zealand $5 bill.

The Maori chief in that picture is exactly how I picture Queegueg from “Moby Dick,” and looks a lot like the way the character was depicted in the John Huston film from the 50s. Interesting.
June 19th, 2008 at 8:33 am
Bet you’ve been waiting a long time to make this list. hehe
June 19th, 2008 at 8:40 am
That man was my grandfather
June 19th, 2008 at 8:42 am
I tried to get into Berkeley by telling them I was full blooded Moriori, but the didn’t buy it. No wonder…

So you’re telling me that my third favorite fruit is actually not a fruit but a cute little bird?
Oh the horror….
June 19th, 2008 at 8:49 am
“2. A kiwi is not a fruit.”—A kiwi IS a fruit, it is also a bird.
June 19th, 2008 at 8:50 am
Great list! I want to visit now…And meet Bret and Jemaine.
June 19th, 2008 at 8:53 am
All the pictures of New Zealand I see are beautiful, I hope I have to opportunity to travel there one day! and yay for flight of the conchords!!
June 19th, 2008 at 8:55 am
About number 3. , I don’t know if I would call New Zealand a ”major nation”, perhaps a lower mid-size nation. It is not all that relevant to the rest of the world, specially at that time.
June 19th, 2008 at 9:02 am
Dear Kiwis: Please don’t crucify me for what I’m about to say.
If “New Zealand is the world of Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films” isn’t a cool fact, then I don’t know what is!
Woohoo I wanna go to the real Middle Earth someday!
June 19th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Damn, i wish i live in NZ when i was younger…i could have been driving at 15, fucking at 16, and drunk at 18!
June 19th, 2008 at 9:24 am
Jamie, fantastic list!! Well done. I read last week that Abel Tasman managed to discover Tasmania and New Zealand but somehow completely missed Australia. I also spent some time in college studying native Maori melodies, and they have a strikingly similar pentatonic structure to the nursery rhymes and folk music of Western music. I love taking Maori melodies and setting them to bizarre Western harmony – it’s a cool effect.
Plus, one of my favorite things about New Zealand is that I have always heard that they like Americans (yay!).
June 19th, 2008 at 9:26 am
Cool list, cool country. Alas, New Zealand is a place I’ll only visit in my imagination. How about a follow up of prominent Kiwi’s, be sure to include Lucy Lawless.
BTW Do they drive on the left side of the road in NZ?
June 19th, 2008 at 9:28 am
Jfrater, you’re such a show-ff. Boast, boast, boast, Kiwiland is so great… But I’m English, so that makes you my bitch, so HA!
June 19th, 2008 at 9:29 am
OOOPS! I just realized now where I read that fact about Abel Tasman hehehehe…..
June 19th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Top three cool things about Nebraska:
1. It’s flat
2. We grow corn
3. We chew Skoal

June 19th, 2008 at 9:35 am
very interesting list.
June 19th, 2008 at 9:36 am
new zealand sounds amazing. I would have mentioned something in there about LOtR…I think that was a pretty big deal and showed the rest of the world a lot of NZ’s natural beauty.
#16 is my personal favorite. Maybe legalize pot and you have the most liberal country there is
June 19th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Joss:
Brit? Like, Britney?
June 19th, 2008 at 9:39 am
Nice list. I think I knew about three of those before reading this list.
Whatever happened to the movement to change the New Zealand Flag from the Union Jack to something more local? Is it officially dead now?
June 19th, 2008 at 9:40 am
bucslim, your state sounds so similar to mine…just replace your #3 with “we party in fields”
June 19th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Totally neat-o list Jamie, or wait, is that word reserved for forum use only?
Lots of cool info, a lot I didn’t know, and those pics just give me even more reaons to visit sometime.
June 19th, 2008 at 9:54 am
I had the opportunity to visit New Zealand, specifically Christchurch, as part of Operation: Deepfreeze while in the U.S. Navy deploying to Antarctica in the mid-eighties. Beautiful country and from a sailor’s POV, beautifully avaliable women. Is the female-to-male ratio still 3:1?
June 19th, 2008 at 9:54 am
New Zealand sounds awesome! (goes to pack suitcase)
June 19th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Great List!!
I was a bit surprised at no mention of sailing as national hobby.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:05 am
I know a few people who have been to NZ. Not one of them wanted to come back to America. I will probably never be able to. Lack of funds.
One of the cutest guys I ever knew was from NZ. We called him Joey. His real name was Chris. I’ll never forget the night he kissed me.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:05 am
My best friend moved to NZ for “a semester abroad” a couple of years back… she’s not coming back any time soon!
June 19th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Big ups to your gangsta-folk bands.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Very educational list. I always like when things are put into fun fact form. I would have paid more attention in school if they taught only in fun facts.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Kapow and Joss…..he could be did
June 19th, 2008 at 10:25 am
New Zealand is also famous for spawning celebrities that we Australians steal from them (and in some cases, eg Sam Neill and Russel Crowe, attempt to give back)
Also, and this could be wrong, I heard somewhere that New Zealand has zero native mammal species (the possible exception being a species of bat that may or may not exist, and probably flew in anyway), compared to Australia which has more native species than almost any other country, being one of the 12 “megadiverse” countries that account for 75% of the world’s biodiversity. Considering their proximity, New Zealand’s lack of native mammals is startling.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Double post for like… the 18th time today:
Warrr 13, I was amazed when I heard about Abel Tasman, I think he managed to travel between the very top point of Australia and the Southernmost tip of Papua New Guinea, without noticing either, the nautical equivalent of threading a needle by throwing the string at it.
And Chris 7, the kiwi is the bird, kiwifruit is the fruit, and it was only renamed that fairly recently. If you say just ‘kiwi’ and refer to the fruit, you are incorrect.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Great list! Lots of interesting tidbits I wasn’t aware of.
A very liberal and progressive society. Definitely beat us to women’s suffrage.
The age for sexual consent here in Canada is 14. As long as neither party is in a position of authority over the other.
Even under 14 is often not illegal, if there is a less than 2 year age difference, and again, neither party is is a position of authority or trust over the other. Common sense, there is no criminal penalty for youthful experimentation.
We too use cash rarely. We have debit cards (East coast had them in the early 1980’s), cash cards, major credit cards, and store cards.
I knew there were many parallels between Australia and Canada, I did not know that NZ has just about as many similarities.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:30 am
After backpacking around the world, there is no better country made for young backpackers. It is a beautiful country with rad people. HIGHLY recommend travel there.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:43 am
ps: Jamie we had this discussion last night. Canada has only one national anthem now. It was ratified after we adopted our own charter of rights and freedoms. Traditionally yes, we always did have 2. And we have many monarchists/traditionalists who would have it that way still. Anywho here is the quote.
“National and royal anthems. ‘O Canada’ and ‘God Save the Queen’/'Dieu sauve la Reine’ were approved by Parliament in 1967 as Canada’s national and royal anthems. Legislation to this effect was passed only in 1980, however, and applied only to ‘O Canada.’” So by law we only have one, but by tradition 2.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Bucslim #17 Omaha was rated the 3rd best city to Live, Work, Play by Kiplinger. I drove through Nebraska. Couldn’t find a vacancy anywhere in Grand Island. All hotel/motels full. Finally got a room in Lexington. Nice town. Nice people. Where are you from? I went to school in Iowa. You’re not kidding. Lots of corn in the region.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:54 am
New Zealand is important. Without it, lamb (during Xmas when I’m in Australia instead of the States,) would be expensive! I think New Zealand has other good things going for it, but having an Aussie SO has clouded my vision…
June 19th, 2008 at 11:05 am
This list just makes me homesick
June 19th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Hurray for #16!! I sure wish that we-in-the-US weren’t so da’gum uptight about everything. Our prisons would probably be a lot emptier, insurance rates lower, and they wouldn’t have to play all our country songs backwards for them to have meaning…
June 19th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Vera – I reserve the right to not disclose my location. I don’t want Randall or Kiwiboi showing up at my door begging for favors again. Two court orders and a rabid chinchilla could keep those guys away from me.
Anyhoo, I jest. I love Nebraska. Clean air, no congestion, nice folks minimal crime, and corn fed girls.
June 19th, 2008 at 11:39 am
A couple I used to work with retired to New Zealand a few months ago, and all I ever hear back is how lovely everything is.
I’m incredibly tempted to go there myself and see if I can migrate.
June 19th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Where is the origional Zealand?
June 19th, 2008 at 11:50 am
New Zealand sounds like a great place to visit. But how could I ever leave California, I would miss the wanna bes, illegals and all that smog
June 19th, 2008 at 11:55 am
@ Rodeograndma: Where is the origional Zealand?
Denmark
June 19th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
The original Zealand is located off the shores of England. It is the world’s smallest country, also named Sealand, and has been housed by offspring of the Man in the Iron Mask since the early 1300s. They, too, have 2 national anthems; one for people and one for the stray dog that happened to swim to the island one day.
June 19th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
NZ — certainly the South Island — is the most consistently beautiful country I’ve ever seen. Its remoteness has allowed it to remain unspoilt.
I had the vague impression before I went that places like Christchurch would remind me of England in the 50s, so I was surprised to find that the cities are so cosmopolitan.
BTW, the kiwifruit isn’t indigenous to NZ. As its original name suggests, it came from China. I’m pretty sure that calling it the kiwifruit was a (v successful) marketing ploy…
June 19th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Where is the original Zealand?
rodeo – the origin of “New Zealand” is Dutch, not Danish.
June 19th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
besides sheep herding and movie making and tourism, what are the other top industries in NZ?
June 19th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Oh, there seems to be some confusion with the original Zealand. Here’s what I just learned:
New Zealand (originally “Nova Zeelandia”)is named after the Dutch (as in Netherlands) province of Zeeland, also known as Zealand.
The Danish (as in Denmark) island of Zealand (also known as Sealand) is unrelated.
And now we are all a little bit wiser!

June 19th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Some other cool things about NZ…
1. Watties Tomatoe Sauce
2. NZ Fish and Chips
3. Peanut Slabs
4. Chocolate Fish,
and of course the people!
June 19th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
that’s it, i’m moving to new zealand. sounds like a very well grounded, pretty lax kind of country. no nuclear weapons, very woman liberated, drinking age is 18… i think they have the right idea, lol!
except for letting 15 year olds drive. i’d be driving a bicycle every day with 8 layers of pads on, HAHA!
June 19th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
This is awesome/coincidental/funny because I am moving to NZ in September. Specifically Auckland.
June 19th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
New Zealand sounds fantastic! I am from Spain, how are immigrations regulations there? Your city looks beautiful!!
June 19th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Chris: No – American’s call them kiwis wrongly
A Kiwi is a bird or a person!
June 19th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
warrrreagl (#13): we do – or at least the majority do like Americans
Yogi (#14): yes – Kiwis drive on the same side of the road as the British and Japanese.
SoCalJeff: the change the flag movement ended without a change – it was driven mostly by one wealthy kiwi. If NZ becomes a republic – which will no doubt happen eventually – there will probably be a flag change.
carpe_noctem: you are right – NZ has no native mammals. And another interesting fact (considering our close proximity to Aussie) is that we only have one poisonous creature (the katipo) which is not deadly to humans anyway – and Australia is full of deadly creatures!
June 19th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Do the women dig overweight dudes over there, like in Tonga? If so, you truly have an Island Paradise!
June 19th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
chershey (#51) haha that is excellent.
I also forgot to mention on the list the weta – our unique insect which is among the largest and heaviest insects in the world:
http://www.geocities.co.jp/NatureLand-Sky/8651/photo/giant_weta.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/dingotush/weta.gif
I was bitten by one once – it hurt but they are not poisonous and don’t usually bite people.
June 19th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
logar: the tongan women here probably do
Not sure about the kiwi women
Belfrahn: I think that working holiday visas are relatively easy to obtain here – though that may change with the change of government that is likely later this year.
June 19th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Very interesting and informative list, thanks J!
June 19th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
Great list, makes me want to visit. Perhaps NZ is the place for me when I retire! Hubby and I sometimes think about Australia.. mostly for kicks but who knows? =)
June 19th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
a new one….New Zealand is the first country to ban traditional light bulbs with more efficient ones
June 19th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
looks like an cricket on steroids.
June 19th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Bibek: I think Australia did it first – and there are doubts that they are more efficient! And furthermore, they contain mercury so they are bad for the environment. The government hasn’t passed the law banning proper light bulbs yet – it may not happen
June 19th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
is that where beef Wellington comes from?
June 19th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Aww… Look at the lil kiwi!!!
June 19th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Australians unite in sarcasm against New Zulland! (Just wait until my lesson breaks today.)
June 19th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
MPW: No – that comes from the Duke of Wellington from England
June 19th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Don’t forget a New Zealander will tell you that sex comes before seven
June 19th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
I have always wanted to move to New Zealand. I think you just sealed the deal for me Jamie.
Awesome list! You guys seem so laid back. My kinda place.
June 19th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
If I wouldn’t have to leave Texas I’d move in with you, Jamie.
June 19th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Hey man. You should have also mentioned that Auckland(WHICH SHOULD BE THE CAPITAL) is the most multi-cultural city in the world. But I think its actually getting over run with Asians and Islanders!
June 19th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
when i first read #13 i thought it said ANUS And not ANZUS
June 19th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
mom424: not to derail the list but how is it a sign of progression of a society that it allows children to have sex?
June 19th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Wait, Kreachure, did you take me seriously? I was joking.
June 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
You know what, I watched Whalerider and thought the Maori people were pretty cool. Now I’m not so sure…
June 19th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Don’t worry, Cedestra.
I never take you seriously.
June 19th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
one of my world-traveling friends (who spends an inordinate amount of time in Switzerland) told me that New Zealand is actually looking for immigrants to fill some very important jobs and bring more diversity to the country.
I looked at the website, and you have to apply and be accepted to move/work in NZ. It would cost me in the vicinity of 400$ to just apply… and there are many skilled and business needs available for the right candidates!
when I finish my education, I may try to get in… because I think my life would be so much more fulfilled in NZ and satisfactory… I will have more satisfaction with my career and have happiness beyond what I have here.
However, although I see the need for Veterinarians in NZ
June 19th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
2worlds: Now that NZ has left ANZUS, all that’s left is Aus ‘n’ US – ANUS.
(Hang on, aren’t I meant to be making sacastic comments about New Zulland?)
Here’s one: New Zullanders talk rull funny.
June 19th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
hey! I got cut off!
anyways., Veterinarians are a job listed that is in need… which means that Veterinarians will need Certified Veterinary Technicians…

June 19th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I live in New Zealand – In Dunedin (which is so tiny it SHOULDN’T be called a city! XD) A lot of you mentioned accents and stuff, but I really can’t tell the difference between some Americans and the majority of New Zealanders…. Am I just stupid? XD
June 19th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Genesis, I use to live in Dunedin as well, but it was the Dunedin in FLA. Use to meet quit a few of your countrymen who visited in FLorida. I believe that your Dunedin is larger than the Florida “Dunedin”.
June 19th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
The seeps! The seeps!
June 19th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
interesting. some of these i knew but others i didnt. i learned something today! =)
June 19th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
New Zulland sux
Ostraya five
New Zulland retains the Bludislow Cup.
(If you understand this, and are not an Aussie or Kiwi, congratulations.)
June 19th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Dischuker: We don’t allow it, we just have common-sense rules. Teenagers are not penalized for being teenagers. Would you call it progressive to have a 17 year old in jail for 10 years because a 15 year old gave him a blow job at a party? That is a current event where you live. Nor do we throw kids in jail or prosecute them for child pornography when they post pictures of themselves naked using their camera phone. In order for us to prosecute their actually has to be a victim. That is progressive.
June 19th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Dischuker: You actually got me wondering if there is a down-side to our rather liberal laws regarding sexuality. Well it certainly doesn’t appear to have a negative effect. This is a very interesting statistic.
There were considerable variations
in rates of teen pregnancy among the Canadian provinces/territories with higher rates occurring in the
prairie provinces and territories. Canada, the USA, and England and Wales all saw their combined birth/
abortion rates among women under age 20 decline since 1990 and Canada’s rate remains less than half
the rate of both the USA and England and Wales.
I would say that we are on the right track, eh?
June 19th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Tull me aboot the Noo Zulland accunt bun hated…I get mah arse roomed by Amoricuns whenever I do any ovuhsuhs voice wuhk. And I tend to thunk my diction is better than the average bears.
Hi from Christchurch!
June 19th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
I sooo want to travel to New Zealand. I live in Canada which is socially very similar to NZ apparently, but you have us beat weatherwise. It’s bloody cold here.
I met a dude from Wellington once, who did nothing but brag about how awesome New Zealand was, except for Auckland. He said Auckland was nothing but “wankers”. Sort of like Toronto, I guess.
June 19th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
gee. what are these seeps you speak of diogenes?
June 19th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
cool list, I definitley want to go to New Zealand now!
June 19th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
I think haka should be included. That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. =D!
June 19th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
In regards to point 8, it has been genetically proven that Maoris and most other Pacific islanders are a combination of Taiwanese and Melanesian. The theory goes that a group of people sailed from Taiwan and landed in Papua New Guinea where large groups of natives joined their voyage to act as guides. The boat landed on one of the islands and they settled there and from that initial group developed the various pacific islanders that we have today.
June 19th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
those deep down sediments you have, have a way of seeping up, from deep ocean darkness, and creating energy..supporting life.
really amazing stuff, and its in those new zealand waters.
June 19th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Another interesting fact about NZ is that it exports all its best produce (lamb, fruit, dairy) overseas leaving all the “sub-standard” crap for kiwis (the people, not the birds) to consume. They also get the joy of paying international prices for it.
Oh, and anyone that thinks that Auckland should be the capital is clearly delusional. Having lived in both Auckland and Wellington, I can happily say that Wellington is definitely the better choice.
June 19th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Those pics are great Jfrater, the water looks gorgeous and very clean. This list deff puts New Zealand on my wish list
June 19th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Dischuker:
I could be wrong, or my stats or old… but at this year;s Earth day Celebration on my college campus, i met an amazing group called the Population Connection.
here is my favortie quote from their website:
“Teen births in the United States fell 33
percent from 1991 to 2004, but this country
continues to have the highest rate of
births to teenagers aged 15-19 in the
industrialized world. Three in ten girls in
the U.S. become pregnant at least once
before age 20, adding up to more than
750,000 teen pregnancies each year.”
how is it that a nation that preaches “abstinence only” programs in sex ed classes has the highest pregnancy rate in any technologically advanced country?
i went to 2 different high schools in 2 different parts of the country.
Freshmen year/sophomore year… in a suburb of Chicago… sex ed was taught for 8 weeks in separate classes for boys & girls. girls learned about the reproductive systems of both sexes, how fertilization occurs, fetal development, STD’s, pregnancy prevention and birth control, and had guest speakers-2 of whom where teen mothers. overall, a veyr informative course that was not a scare tactic and I felt prepared me well when i decided to start having sex.
sophomore/junior/senior year… in a small town in rural South Carolina… sex ed was only offered to seniors as an elected 3 week substitute for driver’s ed or gym credit. parental permission/consent forms where required to participate, and more than 1/2 of the female students had either already had a child, where currently pregnant, or had a pregnancy termination. i found this a case of “too little, too late” not only that, the class really pushed abstinence only until marriage.
my high school boyfriend was always pressuring me for sex, and couldn’t understand why a girl who wasn’t a virgin would deny her BF having sex with her. i told told him constantly that i had more important things to be concerned with-i was very involved in developing my art and my dog. so he broke up with me our senior year and then knocked up a freshman within 2 months. yeah. that sucked.
anyways-i think the NZers are spot on. how do you say “good job” in NZ slang?
rtr
June 19th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
ringtailroxy: I guess the closest thing I can think of to “good job” in New Zealandish would be “good on ya!” or “cheer, bro”. Those from Remuera and other posh parts might be more inclined to say “Rather jolly good job old fellow.”
Okay – I was kidding about the last part.

New Zulland doesn’t get mistaken for Austria, like Australia does.
June 19th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Interesting list.
I want to go to New Zealand now..

ringtailroxy: email me with your password and I will reset it for you

New Zulland is famous for its fauna. In a recent English class in Korea, I was giving the class a quiz. One question was “This bird lives in New Zulland. It starts with ‘k’”. Student: “Sheep”. (On the other hand, everyone knew “kangaroo” and “koala”, but got stuck on “kookaburra”.) (Why do all these native animals start with ‘k’?)
In New Zulland, everyone is related to everyone else: Russell Crowe is the cousin of cricket captains Jeff and Martin Crowe, kiwiboi is the brother of jfrater (I’m not giving away a secret by saying that, am I?) (and there are other siblings hanging around here, too) and Hillary Clinton is named after Sir Edmund Hillary.
Speaking of Russell Crowe:
1) his middle name is Ira.
2) he spent as much of his childhood in Australia as he did in New Zulland.
3) his career before he left New Zulland was: Um, err …
4) when he does well, he is “The Austrlian-based actor”. When he does badly, he is “The New Zulland-born actor”
Australia, of course, has produced many fine performers, such as Olivia Newton-John, John Farnham, the Bee Gees, most of AC/DC, Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman.
Just to show I can laugh at myself:
Many times in the last two weeks: “What is your favourite day of the week?” Student: “My favourite die of the week is Sundie”. (I don’t have a strong Aussie accent and am sometimes mistaken for being English. For some reason they hear my “ay” as “ie”.)
June 19th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
So pretty. I live near tall buildings and concrete. Not so much fun.
HM.
June 19th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Yeah! New Zealand gives me a boner!
My brother-in-law went to NZ so he could study with the top Nabokov scholar in the world (don’t ask). When he returned he described NZ as some kind of dystopian nightmare. Jerky, strange people, ridiculously high prices for produce, bad food, gangs of surly Maoris, garbage, grafitti (I think he was in Wellington). All kinds of complaints. He cut his trip short and came back to the states three months sooner than expected. I’ve heard similar stories from other people who’ve been there. What gives? Maybe he’s just a pussy?
June 19th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I love living in NZ. I’m from the U.S. but I immigrated here about 2 years ago and haven’t looked back. People ask me all the time if I will go back to the states but I really can’t imagine doing it since my life has been so great since I moved here.
NZ is one of the easiest countries to immigrate to but a few things you might want to consider if you’re from the states like me and looking to come here. You will take a hit in pay most definitely. Though NZ is on their own economy, I think you’ll find cost of living and goods some what higher here with regards to the wages vs. cost (depending of course where in NZ you live, as the smaller towns may be cheaper in some regards). That being said, giving up extravagent materialism is well worth the trade in lifestlye. People are generally great here, there’s lots of nice and scenic places to go, all very close by. Life is more laid back and casual I find. Even living in the “big” city of Auckland, the pace of life leaves me quite content.
And yes Auckland is quite multi-cultural, which is one of the things that make it great. I probably have more international friends here (from India, China, the islands, Korea, Japan, England, etc…) than Kiwi friends.
Although some Kiwis feel a bit threatened about being “over-run” with immigrants, the country as it stands now needs a lot more of them. I’ve only seen positive results, including strengthing the economy, and adding the overall culture value. And there is plenty of room. Sorry, hope there’s no offense given to my fellow New Zealanders(I am one too now!) by such remarks.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Another cool fact about New Zealand:
Their great saling heritage notwithstanding, Team Newzealand first won America’s cup not through sailing prowess, but in a court of law!
Team New Zealand skirted the cup rules by ditching the 12m class and offering a surprise “big boat” challange to Stars and Stripes. Sportsmanlike conduct brushed asside, Dennis Conner responded in turn with a technical reading of the rules and produced a catarmaran which thourougly trounced Team New Zealand. Not being satisfied with the one-upsmanship, New Zealand sued the Americans and was awarded the cup by New York Superior Court. The Kiwis won the cup!
The desision was overturned on appeal and affirmed in the highest court. The only time the cup has been awarded and relinquished in a court of law…
June 19th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
@ ken j
I suppose you can have a bad experience anywhere and also there are definitely some places in NZ that I think might be seen as less diserable, kind of trashed or whatever. There’s certainly strange or bad people among the population, although I ones I meet tend to be mostly good, which leavess me to believe there’s a greater propotionality of nice folks. Bad food can be had here as anywhere, and yes, Produce is rediculously over-priced, as are some other things.
In other words it’s not a perfect society or paradise.
But having lived in as many as 8 different states back home, I find New Zealand to be my favorite place by far for a number of reasons. I can say as well that all of the Americans I’ve met here have loved it as well.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Sorry if I sounded sarcastic. I’ve been wanting to visit NZ for about twenty years, but I don’t know if I ever will.
I live in Washington State, and (from what I’ve read) it’s one of two places that has a temperate rain forest. The other? New Zealand. When I look at pictures of NZ and Washington, they seem very similar to me.
Maybe someday, I’ll get down there. If I’d stayed in the Coast Guard I may have gotten there on an icebreaker by now.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
Cooool! I live in Wellington too!!! (But I’m Australian hahaha) I actually live reeeaaaally close to where the picture above fact 11 was taken.
June 19th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
ChrisG- Not quite true, they’re not all wankers in Auckland. Though your more than likely to get mugged if you go there. Might be preferrable to getting murdered in Christchurch or raped by a rubgy player in Wellington though.
I didn’t really believe my part American friend when he told me that Americans think that being called a kiwi is an insult. Proved me wrong.
New Zulland rocks my socks!
June 19th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
Another good list, JFrater. I didn’t know NZ is such a cool place. Think, I’ll move there in a couple of years
June 19th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Hey Jamie Frater, how can I change the font/style/size/color of my comments? Also, when we are gonna have something like ‘Ask Jamie’ again?
June 19th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
as an aussie, i can say, thank bloody god Jonah Lomu isnt playing international rugby at the moment, greatest rugby player i’ve ever seen. well, except for David Campese i mean.
i think i’ll steer clear of the sheep jokes, jfrater beat me on that last time.
New Zulland, ets bitter thun you thunk!
June 20th, 2008 at 12:03 am
I have to say that #15 is one of the things I used to rely on heavily in NZ – the ability to pay anything anywhere with a bank card. For ages after I moved to Australia I never carried cash around and innocently assumed it’d be ok. But I’ve been caught out so many times when I’m starving, in a hurry, or in an otherwise easily-frustrated state that now I know where ATMs are all over Brisbane… lol.
The worst was getting stuck in Brisbane airport for 10 hours, after going through customs, with no cash at a time when they were renovating (no couches to sleep on), few very of the shops there took EFTPOS (and I’m vegetarian, so I it’s hard enough to find a meal) and ALL the atms were out of order.
Is hokey pokey icecream unique to NZ? I had to explain what it was to someone last night.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:11 am
87. astraya: I got it.
Another interesting NZ fact: New Zealand has failed to win the Rugby World Cup for 20 years (the first ever RWC) despite being consistently ranked #1 in the world. (And the one they won doesn’t count…if you understand that congratulations
)
June 20th, 2008 at 12:21 am
Saffa – i agree in total about the All Blacks, they are the most intimidating rugby team on planet (also Tanga and Samoa), but when it comes down to the RWC every 4 years, they do well, but choke at the last minute, i think the closest in recent RWC’s that they came close to winning was when Jonah Lomu was playing, and correct me if i;m wrong, that was 1999 semi finals.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:25 am
Hey, the moa was mentioned but not Haast’s Eagle? Was the world’s largest bird of prey with a wing-span of 2.6 – 3 meters and weighed up to 15 kilograms. Used to hunt the moa and went extinct when they did.
Haast’s Eagle on Wikipedia
June 20th, 2008 at 12:37 am
CRSN – Jonah Lomu also played in the final in 1995, so I would regard that as the closest NZ has come to winning if you can count ‘95 as recent. They lost that final 15 – 12, in extra time after the score was tied 12 – 12 after 80 minutes.
I’m going to watch the All Blacks play in August in Cape Town. I can’t wait. I really respect the All Blacks and the Bokke – All Black rivalry is one of sport’s finest.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:38 am
Is hokey pokey icecream unique to NZ? I had to explain what it was to someone last night.
Tempyra – I’m not sure about unique. But the NZ stuff sure tastes the best (though I much prefer lime when I’m in NZ).
In London I have seen (poor) substitutes called Honeycomb. And I laughed once at some kiwis I was drinking with in a bar; they would buy Crunchie bars, melt off the chocolate and add the hokey pokey to vanilla ice-cream to get their fix.
What I miss most is Watties tomato sauce (tins of which I import to the UK from NZ in the dozens, from time to time) and NZ fish and chips (the Briish stuff is barely acceptable – but they are a very tolerant bunch).
Also, I’d kill for a kiwi meat pie
In fact, if any kiwi out there is (or knows) a kiwi pastry-chef, I’d be very grateful to get a recipe for an authentic (dairy/cake-shop style) meat pie. Savoury pies too!! Of course, the recipes must be fit for home quantities, as opposed to commercial. Though I bake a damned good meat pie..I never quite get there.
I also bake my own custard squares and have tried coffee buns.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:42 am
the Bokke – All Black rivalry is one of sport’s finest
Saffa – heh, I totally agree! It’s funny how the youger generation of kiwis tends to regard the Aussies as our “natural enemy” when it comes to rugby; for me, and most kiwis over the age of 25 maybe, it has always – always – been the Boks.
I have always worked with Saffas here in London and the rivalry is great. And the rivalry turns into a great alliance when one of us is playing the Poms at something
June 20th, 2008 at 12:44 am
They lost that final 15 – 12, in extra time after the score was tied 12 – 12 after 80 minutes.
Saffa – so would you if you’d been deliberately food-poisoned
June 20th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Saffa – you lucky little bugger, the last international i watched was between Australia and Ireland at the WACA, and that was like 8 years ago.
Now i just go watch our local clubs, might not be as proffesional, but beats the shit out of watching an NFL game, which is catching on over here in WA because a lot of the recruters for the NFL watch a lot of our AFL, and its bigger bucks in the US, even if you only play a game or two.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:46 am
kiwiboi – you can bet I’ll be shouting for the AB’s tomorrow morning (my time) when they thump the Pom’s
I saw a quote this week that you might appreciate:
“I’m going to give Richie McCaw an English shirt, so that when he comes in from our side of the ruck he’s already got a white shirt on.” – Rob Andrew
Those Poms love a whinge
June 20th, 2008 at 12:48 am
Kiwiboi – whats so unique about a Kiwi meat pie? in Oz, a pie is a pie, just with varying ingredients.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:49 am
kiwiboi – food poisoning, haha. You starting to sound like a whinging Pom now. I suppose you going to tell me that that French pass last year was forward
Just kidding………
June 20th, 2008 at 12:57 am
*drools* Custard squares!! I want one now.
I miss the Cadbury chocolate you get in NZ too – the taste is completely different to the Cadbury stuff you buy in Australia.
And Grain Waves! Does anyone else know what they are? Possibly Bluebird’s best ever creation
June 20th, 2008 at 12:57 am
Australia, of course, has produced many fine performers, such as Olivia Newton-John, John Farnham, the Bee Gees, most of AC/DC, Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman.
astraya – I guess it depends on what you mean by “produced”.
Olivia Newton John, Johnny Farnham and the Bee Gees are English!!
And, Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman are both American!!
Of course, as you infer, the Young brothers (the “core”) of AC/DC were also from outside of Australia (Scottish).
June 20th, 2008 at 1:02 am
food poisoning, haha. You starting to sound like a whinging Pom now. I suppose you going to tell me that that French pass last year was forward
Saffa – don’t make me come over there !!
June 20th, 2008 at 1:04 am
whats so unique about a Kiwi meat pie?
CRSN – very similar to an Aussie meat pie. But the kiwi ones are the ones I’m use to
June 20th, 2008 at 1:05 am
This list makes me proud to be a kiwi *places hand over heart and goes to sing the national anthem but can’t decide which one to sing so explodes in confusion* honestly though I don’t think I’ve ever heard ‘god save the queen’ being sung as the new Zealand national anthem. – I did know this fact though
Just last night I read something in a local newspaper which I found fascinating, in relation to item number 15 (hadn’t read the list at this point). NB this story was from a section called ’30 Years Ago in the Evening Star’
“Dunedin retailers are being advised to have nothing to do with a new credit card system, called Visa, being introduced by the Bank of New Zealand.” – Lol
June 20th, 2008 at 1:07 am
“I’m going to give Richie McCaw an English shirt, so that when he comes in from our side of the ruck he’s already got a white shirt on.” – Rob Andrew
Saffa – yeah, I saw that. Funny thing is, after that the British press took an England shirt to an AB’s training session; there’s a great photo of Richie McCaw signing it (with a grin on his face). He wrote “It doesn’t fit!”
June 20th, 2008 at 1:09 am
Kiwiboi – Oz doesnt think the Bee Gee’s are from Oz, quiet the opposite really, and for the others (except for ACDC, even though Bon Scott was Scottish, we consider him a West Australian because he’s grave is in East Fremantle cemetry) the countries that they originally come from can keep them, i’m proud our aussie icon is a cross dressing Dame Ednah Everage (probably spelt that wrong)
June 20th, 2008 at 1:11 am
“Dunedin retailers are being advised to have nothing to do with a new credit card system, called Visa, being introduced by the Bank of New Zealand.” – Lol
Samsung – but are you sure that they take Visa even now in Dunedin? I heard they just got the electricity connected!
Just kidding
June 20th, 2008 at 1:13 am
Ha Ha Ha very funny Kiwiboi.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:15 am
kiwiboi – jokes aside, I am actually planning a trip to New Zealand in 2011 (for obvious reasons) with my wife and a bunch of friends. I really can’t wait for that, its going to be awesome.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:20 am
Oz doesnt think the Bee Gee’s are from Oz
CSRN – I was just having fun with astraya (who mentioned them). I was waiting for him/her to claim Phar Lap next
Though, you can keep Joh Bjelke-Petersen. And Russell Crowe.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:21 am
jokes aside, I am actually planning a trip to New Zealand in 2011 (for obvious reasons) with my wife and a bunch of friends. I really can’t wait for that, its going to be awesome.
Saffa – good for you. You’ll love it! And what superb timing
June 20th, 2008 at 1:22 am
Shapeshifter, a drum and bass act from New Zealand. i think the album Soulstice is a masterpice! check it!
June 20th, 2008 at 1:23 am
Hey kiwiboi, I just went looking for a custard square recipe. Haven’t found one that looks right yet but I did find this:
New Zealand recipes
It has what looks like a typical NZ meat-pie-from-the-dairy recipe near the bottom of the page, you’d just need to adapt it to make individual ones.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:25 am
Kiwiboi – NOOOO! Please take Russell back, he’s ruining the Rabbito’s Rugby team, he even had Gorgio Armani design their Suits, and the bad press that goes with him, good actor, shit head of a bloke but.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:25 am
xoom – yeah I’ve heard of them. But I’m more of a hiphop type of guy than drum and bass
King Kapisi !
There’s lots of great kiwi music – always has been.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:30 am
Tempyra – thanks for the link
Actually, I’ve already seen that page; the meat pie recipe leaves too much margin for error, unfortunately. It just isn’t quite like the shop-bought ones. What I am concerned about is that some kiwi pastry-chef will tell me that “oh yeah…we buy the pie filling as a sack of dried ingredients from a wholesaler”
The Edmonds book, BTW, has an extremely good recipe for Custard Squares – I recommend it.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:33 am
Kiwiboi – NOOOO! Please take Russell back, he’s ruining the Rabbito’s Rugby team, he even had Gorgio Armani design their Suits, and the bad press that goes with him, good actor, shit head of a bloke but.
CRSN – sorry…NO RETURNS!
As a past NZ Prime Minister (Muldoon) said once : “Every time a kiwi moves to Australia, the average IQ of both countries goes up”
June 20th, 2008 at 1:34 am
Lol… I think they do and they just re-hydrate it
Is this it?
“My old Edmonds book has 175g 6ozs flakey pastry, cut in half and each piece rolled very thin. Prick well all over and bake at 215C 10- 12 mins. The filling is 1 1/2 cups milk, 50g butter, 2tblsp Edmonds Cornflour, 3tblsp icing sugar, 1 egg, vanilla essence.
I cup milk in a saucepan with the butter and heat. Mix cornflour and sugar with the remainder of the milk to a smooth paste and add beaten egg. Pour in hot milk and butter and return to the saucepan; cook until the mixture thickens, then cook for 5mins stirring all the time. Add vanilla and when cold spread between the pastry. Ice the top and sprinkle with cocoanut.”
Found it on a forum somewhere.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:40 am
Ooh ooh ooh, fun fact number 21:
New Zealand troops took the first German territory in World War I. At the request of Great Britain, German Samoa (a German colony) was invaded unopposed on the morning of 29 August 1914 by New Zealand Troops.
Damn! I’ve just done some research and this ‘fact’ I’ve always taken as true, is wrong.
Three Days Earlier on August 26 British and French forces invade Togoland, a German protectorate in West Africa.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:49 am
Tempyra – similar. Though I have a lot of Edmonds books, the recipe I use is in an edition that is only a few years old (I can’t check right now, I’m at work)
June 20th, 2008 at 1:54 am
Kiwiboi – in early 2006 Dads Pies NZ were supplying 2000 English pubs with pies (made by Dutch immigrants). They are the pies we get in BP service stations.
Goodtime Pies supply to NZ schools (heart tick standard) and are currently negotiating with schools in UK and New York.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:58 am
Samsung – On the war theme, Rommell said of Aussies and kiwis : “If I had to take hell, I would use the Australians to take it and the New Zealanders to hold it.”
June 20th, 2008 at 2:00 am
Rusty – thanks for the useful information! I’ll follow that up.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:55 am
Very nice, more lists like this one!
June 20th, 2008 at 5:24 am
Cool fact about New Zealand
They have the most singularly succesful international sporting team of all time, The All Blacks, or the New Zealand rugby team.
They were also the winner of the first ever Rugby World Cup.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:38 am
you forgot to mention NZ best music export, Bret and Jemaine of the band Flight of the Conchords
June 20th, 2008 at 5:40 am
Very interesting list but what about The All Blacks. Surely what New Zealand is most famous for!
June 20th, 2008 at 5:48 am
Thanks for straightning out the Kiwifruit thing, been struggling getting that through to Poms. Great photo of Welly cant beat it on a good day eh. Hope this doesn’t encourage to many migrants though I try to tell people its a shit hole boring and full of tossers. Low pop. rules.
June 20th, 2008 at 5:51 am
for number 3 you obviously mean over 18 yes?
June 20th, 2008 at 6:06 am
Hands up anyone who completely missed the deadpan tongue-in-cheek irony of my last comment. Yes, I thought so.
Here are some more facts about New Zulland:
There are fewer people living in New Zulland than in Sydney. (Of course, so many of those living in Sydney are New Zullanders, anyway.)
It is further from Sydney to Auckland than it is from London to Kiyev or from New York to Wiinnipeg.
New Zulland cricketers can’t play underarm bowling.
(Un case unyone thunks U’m laying ut on a but thuck, U’ll muntion that U huve rulatuves on both sudes of the fumuly in New Zulland, and unce upplued for a jub there. They dudn’t wunt me. New Zulland us my sucond favourute country.)
Korean students keep referring to eating kiwis. I tell them not to.
June 20th, 2008 at 6:31 am
mom and roxy: i am not concerned with teen pregnancy rates (atleast in this argument). just whether or not we think it is a good idea for 14 year olds to be having sex. try to forget the notion that a progressive nation should be open to all things. think of all the emotional, physical and psychological responsibilities that come with having sex. is this something that should be added to the plate of a 14 year old?
June 20th, 2008 at 6:56 am
Looks like a nice place. Except for the people and there horrible politics. Ugh.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:10 am
Hands up anyone who completely missed the deadpan tongue-in-cheek irony of my last comment. Yes, I thought so.
astraya – irony or no, not everybody will appreciate that, and – secondly – how many Australians would you estimate actually think that those people are, in fact, of Australian origin? In my experience, a good many.
So I will assume that your comment about the Hillary Clinton/Edmund Hillary thing is also tongue-in-cheek…
June 20th, 2008 at 7:26 am
Hands up who likes pavlova?
June 20th, 2008 at 7:34 am
Along with Canada it is unfortunately the worlds most politically correct country and the worst drain on Centrelink.
Jokes.
Also the worlds worst cricket and rugby teams. Thats true.
New Zealand is a beautiful nation and amongst the bravest soldiers the world has ever known. An ANZAC never dies, he simply starts beating the next challenge.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:35 am
I dislike pavlova: it’s an over-rated overly-sweet dessert that tastes like… SUGAR. Why not just have the whipped cream and strawberries (or whatever you put on top of it) by itself?
June 20th, 2008 at 7:38 am
After living there 3 years some observations that have stuck w me for decades:
– home milk delivery paid for w plastic tokens purchased in bulk.
– in Tawa (a bedroom community of Wellington) garbage was only picked up if it was packed in municipality issued garbage bags.
– best ice cream in the world
– only place where I bought mutton flavoured potato chips
– everyone tries for an “OE”
– bought a UTE that was dual fuel and this was in the 80’s
– leader in banking innovations because, at the time, all the banks had a business relationship w a central data centre. Anyone remember Databank?
– in times of electricity shortage the electrical company would send a pulse to shut off water heaters.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:55 am
Cooked right pav is oarsome gotta be high and marshmallowy.
What is Centrelink?
June 20th, 2008 at 7:58 am
Centrelink is the Australian equivalent of Work and Income NZ (WINZ, if it is still called that).
June 20th, 2008 at 8:01 am
Cooked right pav is oarsome gotta be high and marshmallowy.
Phil – yep. Have you seen James Martin (the UK celebrity chef) cook “pavlova”? he leaves it cooking in the oven for 6 hours!! There is absolutely no marshmallow centre! It must be like eating a concrete slab.
A pity, because he is otherwise a fine chef.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:02 am
Six hours!! No way.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:05 am
magicboy – Tawa..Databank ? Heh, I’m in banking, and can tell you that when I first came to the UK I found the banking systems (retail) utterly ancient. I went into a main branch of Lloyds Bank at the time to get my account balance, and they said I had to go to the branch where my account was held because their systems were not centralised. For a hefty fee they would telephone my branch for me
Actually, when I think about it, it’s still somewhat backward!
As for Tawa..I was born in Porirua (spare me the jokes…)

Does he cook his pavlova at a really low temperature or something? Otherwise, you’d need a hacksaw to cut it…
June 20th, 2008 at 8:06 am
Phil – yep. I’ve seen him cook it on his tv show. My wife and I were ROFL
June 20th, 2008 at 8:08 am
Tempyra – I can’t remember specifically, but it was relatively low. The finished article looked like a white cow pat
But..as i said..he’s otherwise a great chef.

A white cow pat? LOL

dischuker:
okay. let’s set aside the pregnancy statistics.
the age of consent in most states is 16. (in South Carolina,it’s 14 for females and 16 for males)
let’s all take a moment to think back…
how old where you when you experienced your first sexual contact?
i was 12 when i got my first real kiss. i was doing everything BUT sexual intercourse by the time i was 13.
and i was older than many of the other girls in my neighborhood that began having sexual experiences at 10.
age of legal consent does not matter. if it was 12 or 21, it is an individuals personal right to decide when to begin having sex.
i thin some of the laws are to strict and did not do enough to protect the innocent and too much to condemn others, instead of looking at each case on an individual basis.
just because a country has a lowered age of consent than you are familiar with in the states doesn’t mean it is going to result in a rash of 14 year old girls having sex. the same way that free condoms in high schools doesn’t create porn stars or legal drugs in Amsterdam mean that everyone is a heroin junkie!

I’ve been to NZ twice. Once in 1950, and then again in 1954. So you’ll have to forgive me if my memories are somewhat spotty.
I do remember being almost overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the place! Green hills and broad swaths of land, blue sea and sky, different blues, and blues within blues and both dotted with white, and flowers of every color imaginable.
I remember a very black policeman (?), a traffic-director, standing in the middle of an intersection, in a round box of some kind, wearing a brilliant white uniform with a white helmet that had a kind of ridge atop it. He also wore white wrist-length gloves.
I remember seeing a Kiwi in the bush, and thinking she was so marvelously beautiful and strange.
I *know* I saw a lot of other things, but these are the ones which burned themselves into my brain forever. Captured like a photograph. Bright and new always.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:27 am
DiscHuker; I remember when I was 14, in grade 9 at a party, making out with my boyfriend. On the floor, right next to me was a grade school student having actual sex with her boyfriend. And she was not the only one. And we lived in an upper middle class environment. (Actually it was the richer kids from the other side of the bridge having the most sex, but socio-economic factors we will leave for another time). Good sex ed, none of them got pregnant. But trust me, the statistics prove that they have the sex with or without the protection.
I had sex for the first time later that year. With Stan the man, and promptly gave it up for 2 more years. Frankly wasn’t much fun, too complicated and too messy for my age. Without the education, that one mistake could have been life altering.
It’s not that I approve of early sex, in a perfect world no-one would have sex until they were mature enough to handle the emotional and concrete consequences of said actions. (Some are younger, some are older, and some are never ready).
But youngsters don’t behave like that, the omnipotence of youth and all, they get carried away, they experiment, and it is all a natural part of growing up. Why deny it? Why not educate for it? Teach responsibility, not abstinence. Because abstinence does not work.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
age of legal consent does not matter. if it was 12 or 21, it is an individuals personal right to decide when to begin having sex.
roxy – but the age of consent is also there to protect the youngster; eg. take a naive 12-year old girl and add a worldly (or predatory) 20 year old guy…
I’m not sure all 12 year olds would be mature enough to make such a decision. I know it sounds authoritarian, but I think kids do need protecting from themselves, to an extent. If nothing else, it also places some culpability on the older guy.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Holy shit. I’m sixteen and the “biggest” thing I’ve ever done iskiss, and that was once. And you guys… wow.

Warning ~ I am glad to hear a girl with some common sense. Take your time. I just read a sad story online this morning about a highschool in Gloucester, MA where there were 17 girls pregnant at the same time because they had some kind of competition to get pregnant. Sad.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Proud to say I knew most of these despite living on the opposite side of the Globe. As a Cannuck when travelling the world I have always felt a kinship with ever Kiwi I have met. Liberal minded country within the commonwealth constantly being mistaken for a member of our more populous noisier neighbour.

rushfan: 17?*jaw drops*
I have a friend whose a bit of a -er- slut. Shes my age and she went out some night and a random guy took her to his hotel room and they have sex. I can’t understand how she does that. Where I live the age of sexual consent is 16 so it wasnt illegal just weird. Her best friend has had sex with 30 guys and shes 16 too.
well its their lives.

kiwiboi: It’s not really my choice, my dads insane. Really insane and violent, I’d rather live than have a boyfriend…
warning – that’s awful for you..sorry to hear it. As we say in NZ “Kia kaha!!” (be/stay strong!)
June 20th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Yeah, my best friend from highschool was already sexually active when we met at 15 and I was not. I’m actually glad I was shy because it kept me out of trouble. But, then I started drinking, and it’s easier to come out of your shell, so that was a bad idea…
June 20th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
You guys are such gode rolemodels.
(joke)
xD
kiwiboi: I’m used to it.. :p
June 20th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Warning ~ You’ve mentioned before that your Iranian. Is your family from there or have you guys been here for a few generations? I have a friend named Leila whose dad was Iranian and she’s very proud of the Persian spelling. (Leila instead of Layla) He got deported when she was a baby during the Iranian hostage crisis in like 1975.

I moved here(Norway) when I was three. My dads pretty weird. I remember once he said I couldn’t talk to boys during lunch time. Thats when I realised he was crazy.
June 20th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Warning ~ Cool, Norway. I had assumed you were in the states. Hang in there, you’re almost escapin’ age.
I moved out of a crappy family situation at 17 and never looked back. Now I just focus on being the good mom I never had. The best thing about shitty parents is learning from their mistakes.
June 20th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
rushfan: Right you are. After school I’m headin over to England. No one can stop me. I’d like to go to New Zealand to heard its pretty but I don’t think I could take the flight.

I’m going to have to cut out all the rugby bits and send them to my rugby playing daughter. She’ll love them!
And as a btw, my nick is “segue” v.i., not “Segue” n.
There’s a difference, and was chosen on purpose, not at random.
Thank you.

Thinking about it, I can’t think of a Canadian I’ve met that wasn’t cool either.
The one Canadian I’d like to meet is Mike Holmes

Michael Moore? LOL. Anybody who gets up GW Bush’s nose is ok by me
June 20th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I don’t get it. Is being up someone’s nose funny on that side of the world?
June 20th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
rushfan – you don’t use that phrase? As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, if something “gets up your nose” it is annoying/irritating you.
I say it without even thinking about it
June 20th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
kiwiboi: Is it from NZ or UK?
June 20th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I had assumed as much, but you never know with you foreigners
Now get out of my nose. Just joshing. I would say Michael Moore is more of a get up in your asscrack kinda dude. He’s a frickin moron.
June 20th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
warning – hmmm, not sure. I say it in both places, and they understand it in both places. I’ve said it since I was a small boy (in NZ).

WarningDont’tReadThis:
I, too, grew up in a dysfunctional family. My mother is actually a borderline clinical schizophrenic, my step-father a hard-core alcoholic. (my mother became one as well) I was severely abused, both mentally and physically, and I ran away repeatedly until I finally met my biological father at 16 and left that life forever…
my mother actually strangled me once with a turtleneck sweater I was wearing so severely that I was hospitalized and the initial reaction the staff had was to put me in suicide watch because they thought I tried to hang myself-and the Police Chief was infuriated when he found out! (he had helped me many times try to stay in the foster care system)
ahem… maybe that’s why I sought acceptance(love?) from guys at such a young age, maybe not. I never had a problem with it, and I may have been considered by some to be slut. (I most certainly never considered myself one)
Between 17 & 19 I went a little ape-shit. Lived in a college town, hot guys everywhere, getting into clubs, underage drinking… back then, Raves where all the scene and so where, uhm… drugs…
I survived because I was smart. I was the girl everyone could trust for warfarin-free acid, awesome weed and condoms. (the nice ones,”ribbed for her pleasure”)I may have single-handedly prevented a dozen or more people from contracting STD’s, and prevented a few pregnancies along the way. I had no shame in going to SAM’S Club and buying the carton of Trojans, either. God knows I used them.
now for my bit of worldy advice-if you haven’t started, don’t experiment with too many drugs. i am living proof that the D.A.R.E. programs and Just Say No! campaigns of the late 80’s early 90’s did not work. they only educated me about drugs I never saw in real life, and prepared me for the ones I would encounter.
I am utterly convinced if I hadn’t started smoking weed at 13 I would have been much more successful in life by now. Stayed in school, went to college sooner, not take so much advantage of my dad…
But, 15 + years later, one lesson I have learned is that it’s never to late to pursue your dreams and improving yourself is a lifelong adventure.
well… there. Take it for what you can use it for. You are already eons away in maturity than all the American kids I know your age. The world need more young adults with smarts like you.

here are some more facts about new zealand.
the kiwis are the french of the southern hemisphere.
the kiwis have no real major manufacturing industry.
the kiwis still sook about a cricket incident that happened in the 70’s (probably the last time the kiwis had a chance of beating the aussies)
EFTPOS is nothing special, i would say most developed use some sort od debit card to transfer funds
the kiwis were kicked out of the ANZUS because they refused to allow a US nuclear powered warship to port there.
kiwi soldiers during the 2 world wars did earn themselves a formidable reputation as fierce fighters despite their low contributions in therms of numbers, i think 2 infantry divisions was all during the second war.
new zealand has gang related problems to rival that of the united states.
having said that it is a beautiful coutry i have been there several times.
the problem with new zealand is that it is ful of kiwis.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
ed: I removed your sheep fucker comment because it is offensive to me. As you are from Australia I am not surprised you said it though
Oh – and finally – at least we aren’t the descendants of criminals and didn’t shoot our indigenous people for sport. We treat people with respect.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Oh, owned, jfray; stand up for you’re nation, you go-er- man(?).
June 20th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
kiwiboi: re Hillary/Hillary – to cut a long post short, of course I was being ironic.
In case anyone still hasn’t got it, I state for the record that the following were not born in Australia: Russell Crowe, Sam Neill (not born in NZ either, BTW), Phar Lap, Joh Bjelke-Peterson, Nicole Kidman, Bon Scott, Malcolm Young, Angus Young, any of the Gibb brothers, Olivia Newton-John, John Farnham and Mel Gibson.
When I was young, I had gaps in my knowledge. Now I have fewer gaps in my knowledge. Possibly, many Australians still don’t know that these people were born overseas. Possibly, some people may not know that some of these people did live in Australia for times. There’s nothing particularly Australian about the Bee Gees and Mel Gibson.
Consider the careers of these people (and horse) in their countries of birth: pretty much nothing. Australia is where they gained their first success. Admittedly, superstardom didn’t come until they moved overseas, but that’s the nature of the movie and music world. (Bjelke-Peterson and Phar Lap excluded.)
I like New Zealand and all the New Zealanders I’ve met. Being Australian, I simply couldn’t resist having a go. But there are limits – ie nothing about sheep.
New Zealand isn’t perfect: it’s got this big island full of loud-mouth yobbos next to it.
June 20th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Well my favourite people ever, come from new zealand
That would of course be my family (even the ones that are overseas now)

“the kiwis are the french of the southern hemisphere.”
What does that mean? Good at baking baguettes?, smell of onions?, Produce good wine? someone please explain.
June 21st, 2008 at 12:08 am
The photo of the Moriori was as heartbraking as those of Sitting Bull and Geronimo of North America and the Aborigine of Australia also the Tibetans of China. When you minimalize your natives its like an animal that goes extinct. Nobody WINS!!
June 21st, 2008 at 2:23 am
#213 ed. HI ocker, what pile of garbage did you crawl from under ?. I knew it wouldn’t take long for some jerk like you to post to this list, god knows what your fellow Australians think of people like you. Your kind obviously haven’t improved much since your ancestors arrived in Hobart, or was it Tasmania in the early 1800s, You should also brush up on your use of the English language if thats possible, your spelling also leaves a bit to be desired.
We may have been kicked out of ANZUS but at least we stood on our principles.
We weren’t interested in strutting the world stage being deputy sheriff and suck holeing to the USA.
As for the cricket, If you have to sink to those depths to win go for it, we would rather lose and still look people in the eye.
I can just imagine what your type are like, illiterate, stupid, knuckles dragging on the ground, unwashed, and mumbling inanely to youself. Go and crawl back under the manure pile you crawled out from under you tosser.
June 21st, 2008 at 2:28 am
jfrater: You can administer this comment if you like, but hopefully you can see the funny side.
I’ve just remembered a story my sister told me a few years ago.
My niece’s class was learning about animals. The teacher explained that many sporting teams have animals as their symbols: Canterbury (Sydney) is the Bulldogs, Penrith is the Panthers … My niece put up her hand and said “Excuse me, miss. My daddy calls the New Zealand rugby side “the sheep shaggers”!”
And I promised I wouldn’t say anything about sheep. Sorry.
June 21st, 2008 at 2:39 am
#202, rushfan,
As per Wikipedia, Micheal Moore was born in Flint, Michigan. He is, therefore, most assuredly NOT Canadian.
Thank God.
June 21st, 2008 at 5:33 am
#213 – Ed
Two infantry divisions during WWII?
My Grandfather was a Wing Commander in the RNZAF and spent his entire war (6 years) in Europe, away from his family and friends. My aunt was 7 years old before she saw her father.
New Zealanders were involved in every theatre of war, notably in the Battle of Britain, North Africa against Rommel and in Greece and Crete.
Those comments are just plain ignorant, but given the state of the education system in Queensland, I am not suprised.
June 21st, 2008 at 5:53 am
Oh – and ed (and astraya) – Australia and New Zealand both have around 9 sheep to 1 person. Obviously astraya is trying to be funny whereas ed was trying to be insulting – ed’s original comment inferred that NZ had so many sheep as a result of bestiality – that would mean, therefore, that Australians fuck as many sheep as kiwis – and as there are far fewer of us than them, there is a lot more sheep fucking happening in Aus than here
June 21st, 2008 at 5:55 am
Spart: in addition to what you say – NZ has fought in more allied wars than other commonwealth nations – we (and Australia) both fought in Vietnam alongside the Americans when the British did not.
June 21st, 2008 at 6:31 am
I don’t get why people (still) think sheep ‘jokes’ are funny? It’s been done to death.
June 21st, 2008 at 6:51 am
Kiwi-boi; A little late to respond, but what the hell. In Canada we have the 2 year rule. It is not an offence if the participants are within 2 years of each other. Another large distinction is a person in a position of trust or authority. A 18 year old camp counselor having sex with a 14 year old camper would be prosecuted. Or teacher’s aide or whatever.
Don’t forget that Canada too contributed to all the great wars (and Korea) all out of proportion to our size/population.
June 21st, 2008 at 11:27 am
Mom – I like the sound of that 2 year rule.
June 21st, 2008 at 11:30 am
i’ve a friend from NZ (she’s actually flying there 23rd) and from wat she tells me, new zealand is pretty cool. i’m planning to go to college there, if it’s cheap enough
oh and talking about sex ed, we’ve had that in 7th grade but we needed permission forms, except everyone was allowed to attend XD

I have a vague memory of reading that the Falkland Islands has a sheep:humans ratio way, way higher than Australia and New Zealand. Let’s start telling Falkland Islands jokes!
June 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Awesome list.. makes me proud to be a kiwi….
Is interesting to read what others perspectives of us are… NZ is portrayed as being this ‘clean, green, irie irie’ place, and it is… but the reality is that we also have alot of violence within the family, high teenage pregnancies, abuse and youth offending. Although this seems to be mainly concentrated in certain parts, ie south auckland…. vistor be warned..!!!!
All in all its a great place, especially WEST Auckland (if you must live in Auckland at all!!!)

CRSN, I wish I hadn’t read that link! That’s disgusting. Kinda amusing though that the authority (can’t remember if it was the police or the RSPCA) suggested using rape kits to check for the guy’s DNA.

“New Zealand is a plastic nation – almost all personal financial transactions are made with a card – credit or otherwise” I think this system is very practical and convenient. I wish my country would adopt this system too someday, but it seems very far away from possibility
*sniff*
June 25th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
A list like this really highlights New Zealand’s qualities, but don’t be fooled as we are not without our demons. New Zealand has the highest teenage suicide rate in the world which outlines a fairly unhealthy society. Basically; come for the awe inspiring nature not the people.
June 26th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
school’s out.
June 27th, 2008 at 2:09 am
Haven’t read all the comments about Enzed, so I’m not sure if this has been mentioned or not … 80% of NZers live within 10km (6 miles) of the ocean. I’m one of about 110,000 living in Hamilton, NZ, and we live a whole 30km (18 miles) from the sea.
June 27th, 2008 at 2:12 am
Another Kiwi: ssssh! Stop telling people how great NZ is, let’s keep it a secret so there’s more of NZ for us Kiwis (I mean ME actually)
.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:15 am
Yep, you Kiwi’s have it good, I admit. I could never, and I mean *NEVER* live further than 30 minutes from the ocean.
As it happens, I live 11/4 mile from the ocean, in the woods. So it’s kind of like I get the best of both…oh yeah! and no neighbors!
June 27th, 2008 at 6:16 am
ah, that is one quarter mile.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
I honestly never knew the rest of the world even knew NZ existed. Its not all its cracked up to be! We live a very sheltered life, I can’t wait to get out and see the rest of the world!! Don’t get me wrong I love NZ but its just so sheltered!

plural of Maori is maori, not maoris
June 29th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
God Save the Queen is an official national anthem of NZ? I’ve certainly never sung it and I wouldn’t have a clue what the words are…it’s definitely not of equal standing to God Defend NZ!
June 29th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Ms Constantine: under law it IS of equal standing. According to the ministry of culture and heritage:
“New Zealand holds a rare position in the world in that it has two national anthems of equal standing – ‘God Defend New Zealand’ and ‘God Save The Queen’.”
http://www.mch.govt.nz/anthem/
June 29th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Comment 249: in English the plural has an ’s’ on it – as you can see in any piece of literature from 10 years ago and earlier. These days it has become quite PC to use the Maori plurals instead of the English plurals – I prefer the English plurals as I am a native speaker of English and that is what I was taught growing up. I don’t need a government to tell me to change my spelling as an adult.
June 29th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Oh – further to my last comment, you might like this poster from 1960.

Err.. Whilst NZ was the first to give women the vote, universal suffrage includes the right to stand for parliament. So Australia was the first to have universal suffrage. NZ was the first to give women the vote.
June 29th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
This may be a little irrelevant to the conversation but… I once punted a Kiwi… It was so tempting!!!

Err.. Whilst NZ was the first to give women the vote, universal suffrage includes the right to stand for parliament. So Australia was the first to have universal suffrage. NZ was the first to give women the vote.
“Err”…universal suffrage is about the right to vote; it does not include any right to stand for parliament.
And, as for your comments on Australia’s record…given that universal suffrage affords voting rights notwithstanding race et al, you might like to tell us more about why Aboriginal voting was not fully unfettered until the early 1960’s…

Does anyone want me to say a list of common perceptions of people from other countries by New Zealanders? (As a New Zealander myself, I feel the need to expose what most people in this country think).

New Zeland is Flight of the Conchords land :]

July 9th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
ChrisG:
Thats one thing that GUTS me about NZ.
The rest of the country think that Aucklanders are a pack of Wankers. I still dont understand why, Ive lived in a few places around NZ (wellington included), most of the people who tell you this are from down south, most have never been to Auckland and probably havent even met a real Aucklander….
Ive met more close minded hostile southerners in my travels around NZ, we usually get on like a house on fire until they find out Im from Auckland, then they decide Im a ‘wanker’.
I find the least judgmental people live in Auckland, Wellingtonians are very proud (and rightly so, I love Wellington too) but they need to pull their head out and realise people from Auckland are really nice genuine people too.
July 19th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
I live in the same city as you!! You can see the building I live in, in that picture of Wellington.

Best.

Kia Ora!
I do hate the JAFA stereotype, though. I agree with people who say it is sheltered, I am 14 and just travelled to London without the olds, and i was so shocked at how little i know about the world!
I’m from NZ (Nelson). We seem to come across as a friendly bunch

Nz’s Civil Union law is hardly ” homosexual marriage” mate.
August 13th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Spud: how so? The only difference between that and a regular marriage is that no religious person is involved in the civil union by default. It imparts all of the same rights to same-sex couples as de facto and marriage.
August 13th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
But it is not “marraiage” is it? Untill same sex couples are able to get married, they will not have equal status.
Besides, one can always have a secular wedding eh?

I Love These Facts AND THE PHOTOS ARE GREAT I LOVE MY COUNTRY!!!!! NEW ZEALAND FOR LIFE!!!!!
November 2nd, 2008 at 12:34 am
New Zealand has been hijacked by a Defacto Government. As like in the UK, OZ, USA there has been a Corporate Takeover, the Banks have bought out the upper and lower houses, and are controlling everything. 2012 will be the end of free speech, welcome to the next 100 year war. http://www.CivilRights.org.nz

“Don’t forget a New Zealander will tell you that sex comes before seven”
I think you have the aussie and kiwi accents mixed there, a new zealander will tell you that sux comes before seven.
February 5th, 2009 at 8:27 am
carpe_noctem depending on the dictionary you use as reference, Kiwi can mean, the bird, the fruit, a New Zealander or the rugby team, or all of them in the case of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary I have, all of the above.

How about an alternative opinion from an avid traveller?
New Zealand is one of the most boring and bland countries you’ll ever visit. Stay away.
Unless you’re a sheep lover. Or a middle aged Mr. Gumby. Or simply just want to visit the place for a tick mark in your travel plan.
Surfing is better in Oz. Not to speak of the chicks, and the awful diet with tons of red meat and butter don’t help them wobble anymore gracefully.
Snow sports and trekking & stuff are ok but your sense of fun is better served elsewhere.
People are very unimaginative. Country has virtually no history (I am not talking about Maori history), culture is a badly watered down UK carbon copy, which is very aggravating.
Sense of humour makes one go: “huh?”
Food is atrocious. And very expensive. Taxes are high. Oh, and it can be unpleasantly cold. NZ does have some decent wine and a couple of good beer brands though.
Maoris themselves are trying hard to be more ghetto than ghetto itself (despite their history and original culture).
A lot of whites here do not like living in Asian majority (of whom there are a lot here) either.
Of course all of this is on a kindergarten level.
The only redeeming features are relatively unpolluted environment and beautiful landscapes. If that’s your kind of thing. If it isn’t, then it has no redeeming features.
P.S. Australia is one of the best countries I’ve been to. It’s not even comparable to NZ.

Wow you are so lucky! Queenstown which is in the south island is the capital of like extreme sports and stuff. You can go sky diving and a bunch of other stuff. Auckland i believe is a big tourist spot. Geez there are so many places you can go. And i no there’s this one spot on the south island where you can ride horses from one side of the island to the other side and camp out. It looks pretty fun. I’m sure you can find a lot of other things to do if you google it.
