Considering the volume of releases, overall the 2000s have a dearth of truly good science-fiction films compared with the 1970s and 1980s. Many movies based on books that should have been better fell short: Planet of the Apes, The Time Traveler and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (almost as bad as Vogon poetry). Movies based on other source material that should have been better include Attack of the Clones, V for Vendetta, The Matrix sequels, Terminator Salvation, Transformers, and the 9th and 10th Star Trek flicks. Of course, the 2000s “enjoyed” one of the worst sci-fi movies ever made—one of the worst movies period — Battlefield Earth. That piece of excrement makes Plan 9 from Outer Space look like Lawrence of Arabia.
Omissions: Scientifically dumb F/X movies such as The Day After Tomorrow, The Core, Sunshine and 2012, where the science, plot, situations and characters were really awful—so much so that the cool F/X couldn’t make up for the movies’ stupidity. Also, I’ve left out all super-hero movies, because as was pointed out in the comments on a previous list in mid-2009, that sub-genre belongs more firmly in the realm of fantasy than sci-fi.
Lets kick things off with this British film about a rage virus infecting England became a surprise hit, and spawned two sequels (2007’s 28 Weeks Later and the in-production 28 Months Later). After the virus is unwittingly released by animal rights extremists, the protagonist, Jim, wakes up from a coma to a deserted London — well, not quite deserted. Note: The infected in 28 Days are not zombies, but people who are still very much alive but driven insane/bloodthirsty by the virus.
Even though the movie went flat in the final act and became stock shoot-‘em-up fare, District 9 delivered an intriguing story that played heavily on themes of segregation and racism (or, “specie-ism”). Most critics praised District 9 and it earned a quite healthy box office return.
The third version of the Richard Matheson novel, I Am Legend, was better than the second, The Omega Man, but not quite as good as the first, The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price. I almost didn’t list this Will Smith version because the changed ending violated the basic premise: that vampire killer Dr. Neville is a legend to the vampires. But the first three-fourths of the movie was really good and perfectly captures the isolation of a dead city, and makes up for the disappointing payoff.
Is Mike Judge’s satire of the future absolute top-notch sci-fi? No, but it is fun in so many ways and has developed a nice cult following. Victims of an experiment gone awry, a man and woman awaken 500 years in a future populated literally by idiots.
While the sequel (The Chronicles of Riddick) was overblown, as happens when a surprise hit gets a nice-sized budget for a sequel, Pitch Black was a quite good action thriller that seemed to hit all the right notes. The villains are believable and the action makes sense—it’s not action for mere action’s sake.
I’d be remiss by not including Avatar. Despite its bazillion-plus worldwide box office take, this is a movie that you either love or hate. I fall into the latter, because I like my gee-wiz F/X to have an actual, believable and non-cliché plot. Some have described Avatar as “Dances with Wolves in space,” but Dances was a superior film. Still, if you’re in to mindless F/X, go see it.
At the risk of contradicting myself with #15, Cruise and Spielberg’s War of the Worlds deserves a mention because the F/X were good AND drove the story. The everyman-in-crisis motif was well done, despite some annoying and utterly illogical plot points, such as why the aliens hid their machines underground millions of years ago, yet they survived tectonic shifts and no one ever detected any of the crafts. Also, the aliens didn’t even think to protect themselves from the biology of a planet they had previously visited and presumably were watching. Still, the aliens’ tripods alone—and their deep, blasting tripod-to-tripod communications—make the movie worth it.
This fascinating sleeper explores the isolation of a man (Sam) based on the moon at the end of his three-year tour. His only companion—for a while, anyway—is a robot named GERTY. But Sam soon discovers that he’s not alone. Moon was a Sundance and critical favorite.
Perhaps the buildup was better than the final product, but this interesting take on monster-attacks-city was pretty darn good. If the shaky camera syndrome doesn’t bother you, then Cloverfield is one heck of a trip. After an overly long buildup at a party, **something** begins attacking New York City and creates mass chaos. It’s told entirely from the POV of a dude with a video cam (with one heck of a powerful battery and memory card!). Throughout, we only get glimpses of the monster and bits and pieces of the military’s response. Like Jaws, we don’t fully see the monster until the end. Well worth a look.
This movie based on the novel of the same name could have been better, but just has easily been much worse. The human race has become infertile and society has all but collapsed. Governments have turned utterly oppressive. But a man finds a pregnant woman and struggles to get her to safety. It’s since become a critical and cult favorite. (I think the future oppressive government motif works better here than in V for Vendetta.)
The Road lived up to its source material, Cormac McCarthy’s powerful and utterly depressing novel of the same name. A father and son make their way south in the eastern United States some time after an unspecified cataclysm has devastated the world. Along the way, they fight the merciless elements, cannibals, starvation and sickness. Despite its limited release in the U.S. (Australia, etc., is supposed to get it early this year), it’s been highly praised.
The final chapter of the Star Wars franchise was much better than its two predecessors were. The first 25 minutes and the final lightsaber duels (Anakin vs. Obi-Wan and Darth Sidious vs. Yoda) are among the best sequences of the entire six-movie series. Even though the ongoing problems with bad dialogue and acting before green screens is glaringly apparent in places, Revenge of the Sith at least brought the prequel trilogy to a satisfying, if not Empire-spectacular, conclusion. Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine/Sidious gave one of the best performances of the decade in any genre—which is why Sith is placed high on this list.
This intriguing South Korean movie takes place in an alternate history where Korea is still part of Japan. The back story is that an early 20th century assassination led to Japan siding with the Allies in WWII against the Nazis (Berlin was nuked in 1945, not Japan), thereby allowing Japan to keep its WWII conquests. Sakamoto, a Korean raised in Japan, and his Japanese partner attempt to solve a mystery concerning an archeological artifact, and the stunning realization that the aforementioned history is not right.
J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the Star Trek franchise proved quite popular, despite many deviations from the established characters of Kirk and Spock, as well as a silly plot. (Well, it IS a Star Trek movie, after all.) The reboot earned more at the U.S. box office than the previous four Trek films combined, which bodes well for the continuing journeys of the USS Enterprise. The two standout performances: Simon Pegg (from Shaun of the Dead – the decade’s best zombie film) as Scotty and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy.
This Polish/Japanese film centers on a future where people escape reality through an illegal video game, which is outlawed because players often become catatonic in real life. (Imagine if World of Warcraft or another huge online gaming community was outlawed.) One player, Ash (a lady, and no, Evil Dead fans, she doesn’t wear a chainsaw on her arm) goes on a quest to find the mythical level of Avalon. The movie was a selection and winner at numerous film festivals, including Cannes.
I’m sure that once again, many will say that anime (“cartoons”) are not sci-fi, but I strongly disagree. (Of course, it depends on the anime, too.) Usually, I don’t go in for silly “school-girl-in-love-for-the-first-time” movies, but this film, based on the 1976 novel of the same name, follows a Japanese school girl who accidentally acquires the power to “leap” through time. Makoto uses her newfound ability to avoid embarrassing situations, get good grades, let the good times roll repeatedly and even have her mom serve her favorite meals. But Makoto discovers to her horror that she can leap only a pre-determined number of times, which leads to tragedy. The film won numerous awards and is a critical favorite.
After Joss Whedon’s Firefly was cancelled (unfairly and prematurely, hard-core fans cry) Whedon took his concept to the big screen with Serenity. The movie works quite well both as a standalone AND as a satisfying conclusion to the abbreviated series. Serenity won numerous awards, including the Nebula for best script and the Hugo for best presentation.
Although much different from Philip K. Dick’s original tale of the same name – far more car chases and action sequences in the movie – this Tom Cruise/Stephen Spielberg vehicle works on many levels. (It’s also much better than their later paring, War of the Worlds.) In the future, murders are stopped before they happen thanks to a trio of mutants. If one of them dissents on the outcome of a vision/foretelling, it’s called the minority report. Cruise plays a cop who arrests would-be murderers before they can do the deed—until the mutants foresee him committing murder.
This brief gem is one of the best movies ever made of any genre. It tells a simple love story and deals with the unfathomable distances of space travel in a realistic way. A young man and woman fall in love, but she’s a soldier and leaves with the fleet for a distant world. The further they’re separated, the longer it takes for their messages to reach one another. Very touching and effective. Try watching it in the original Japanese. Fascinating facts: Makoto Shinkai wrote, directed and created Voices of a Distant Star entirely on his Macintosh computer. He and his wife provided the original voice-overs. Now THAT is sci-fi creation at its finest.
I realize that this will be a very controversial No. 1 choice, but so be it. In one of Jim Carrey’s finest roles (no trademark Carrey rubber-face zaniness here), he plays a man who meets Clementine, (the lovely Kate Winslet, in one of her more offbeat roles) who seems strangely familiar—which in fact she is, even though he has no memory of her. What follows is one of the most satisfying (if, alas, a little slow in places) sci-fi movies in years. In fact, multi-Hugo-winning Gardner Dozois, editor of the long-running, highly acclaimed annual anthology, “The Year’s Best Science Fiction,” called Eternal Sunshine the best sci-fi genre film in a long time.
Notable mentions: Wall-E, Attack of the Clones (just for the final 45 minutes of almost non-stop combat) and Signs, which had a great set-up but laughable payoff.

OK i would almost care to bet that once Avatar comes off the big screen and onto bluray and dvd and no one can afford a 3d tv people are going to realise that film just isnt that deep. Its a great film in terms of visual effects and action but the storyline is just cowboys and indians and has been done many times before.
I;m not saying its a bad film, i fully enjoyed it but its just missing something.

First, opinion lists can be so very annoying and trite; therefore it is a forgone conclusion that many will not agree with said choices. Secondly I was completely surprised with your number one. Although Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite movies I was completely thrown when it was named. Thirdly..you have a weird fasination with putting Tom Cruise and “good movies” together..so very oxymoronical..

Equilibrium, with Christian Bale and Liam Neeson definately should have been on the list. I would have taken off War of the Worlds in order to fit Equilibrium on.
Yay for Serenity being on there.
As for Avatar, I really enjoyed it, in both 3D and 2D. And to all the claims that it was copied from other films, there are many, many examples of the same things happening throughout the history of storytelling (Ever heard of Amleth, Prince of Denmark? Or Romeus and Juliet?).

Avatar is a pile of shite.
I like this list, purely because of the wording. Uncompromising, that I like!
The one thing I have to pick you up on:
“…the final lightsaber duels (Anakin vs. Obi-Wan and Darth Sidious vs. Yoda) are among the best sequences of the entire six-movie series.”
No, they aren’t. In the words of Bruce Lee, combat is nothing without emotional content. If you like flashy CGI and emotionless choreography, then yeah those scenes are good. If you look beyond the shiny skin however, all you really see is George Lucas masturbating like a chimp in a zoo.
George Lucas is a fucking idiot.
“Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine/Sidious gave one of the best performances of the decade in any genre.”
Ahem, no he did not.

HAPPY ACCIDENTS (2001), with Vincent D’Onofrio, Marisa Tomei and Holland Taylor, should be in the top 3 with its everyday “back travel” drama. It also happens to be a very rare breed; a Sci-Fi romantic comedy. Its well written, well acted and well scored.
In this scene two back-travelers, who must buy “back stories” -complete with family pictures (“you get what you pay for”), and who must follow “protocol”, ID each other through the number of letters in their first and last names.

Hogarth (31): No, I did not compare Avatar to Shakespeare. I compared the way that stories are often copied and redone, using Shakespeare and Avatar as examples. I could have easily used Lord of the Rings vs and the Scandanavian Epic tales, or The Epic of Gilgamesh vs Noah and the Flood.
I find it silly when people say “I hate Avatar cause they ripped off Fern Gully/ Dances with Wolves/ Pocahontas” (hey, has anyone yet bitched that Pocahonatas totally ripped off Dances with Wolves?) without looking at the film as the film in itself.

@Ziraphen (38):
The modern Pocahontas story has been in existence for over two hundred years. Pocahontas herself lived around four hundred years ago. I can assure you Pocahontas did not rip off Dances With Wolves. I grant you that there are certain themes and tropes which are common across genres and across time. The reason Avatar stands out as an obvious plagiarism (whether intentional or not) is because unlike so many other stories with similar themes, it hasn’t the slightest element of originality or creativity in it whatsoever (OK, apart the lead role being bound to a wheelchair). When you watch that film, the entire storyline becomes completely obvious within the first five minutes. There is not a hint of artifice in it.
Besides which, we’re not talking about the film having a similar story to Pocahontas. We’re not even talking about it borrowing from Pocahontas. We’re talking about an entire storyline nicked verbatim, the songs boiled off and replaced with flying dinosaurs, the art stripped and replaced with CGI. Say I took an Audi TT and spraypainted it yellow. Does that make it a schoolbus? Should we ignore the fact that it’s a fucking TT and focus on its merits as a means of transporting children to and from a place of primary education? Hint: the answer to that is ‘no’.
In summary: Avatar not only sucks because it blatantly ripped-off an animated Disney film, it sucks on its own too because it is bland, predictable and ultimately soulless. And yes, you did compare Avatar to Shakespeare.

How on EARTH can you not have A Scanner Darkly? I can’t even take this seriously without it. Science fiction isn’t about Gee-Whiz special effects, it’s about creating interesting future worlds, and not a single movie (including Eternal Sunshine, which I love) did it better than A Scanner Darkly, while also staying true to the source material. I’m not often critical of lists but you seem to have inspired me.
I Am Legend is an awful film. It achieved success thanks to the prescence of box-office-success-guarantor, Will Smith and a good idea for a story (taken from a good book). However, whilst a solitary character can be the focus of a novel and still captivate the reader, the same is not true of a film given the need for dialogue. To counter this the film adaptation of I Am Legend features the addition of ‘characters’ such as the mannequin (ridiculous) and an exaggerated role for the dog. Okay so it worked Castaway, but it certainly doesn’t here.
And secondly, Simon Pegg in Star Trek, ‘standout’ performance?? What planet are you from?

I think this list hits most of the major sci-fi touchstones of this decade. It’s pretty comprehensive. I would, however, put District 9 much higher on the list — actually, at number one. That movie was the most singular, unique, and refreshing vision of the decade. It really encapsulated everything that sci-fi should be: imaginative, progressive, and very human. I can’t think of a movie that excited my imagination and moved me as much as this film did in this decade. I would put Avatar as number two and Children of Men as number three. These were three outstanding films with amazing visions, visual vocabularies, and very moving storylines.

I am legend was a disgrace. It completely missed the point of the book. The CG was awful. The only good point was the German Shepherd.
War of the Worlds was obnoxious. I wanted to slap the little girl.
The Road is only marginally Sci-fi.
28 days later??? Horror.
Movies that should have been on the list.
-The Chronicles of Riddick. Not as good as Pitch black, but a good straight Sci-fi actioner.
-Donnie Darko. One of the better time travel movies.
-Slither. Alien slugs that make you into a zombie…nuff said.
-Descent. Yeah, more horror that SF, but great film there.

I love Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy & 2012. Your criticism is as bad as TMZ’s criticism. I don’t even know 1/4 of the movies here. And I agree with revolver04 there. WHERE THE FUCK IS WALL-E???? You should include sci-fi films that are intended for children too. Heck, I think Wall-E should be on the top list, rather than Eternal Sunshine. I will say it again. This list is the worst I have ever seen. Besides that one about constuctive plumbing. Does Listverse have a list like that?

Wow, War of the Worlds is listed above Avatar? I think I just threw up. War of the Worlds didn’t even make sense. I’d take a well done but slightly cliched story over a remake with plot holes and a screaming annoying little girl any day.
If anything its Avatar that has merits beyond its special effects, while War of the Worlds is the FX blockbuster with the hollow soul.

i’d have to agree with most of the things on this list (although theres a few i haven’t got round to watching yet), but i’d change a couple of things – Star Wars wouldn’t be anywhere near this list (one word: NOOOOOOOO) and WALL-E would have been #1. i agree with what you said about the decade being a relatively poor one for great sf movies, and for me WALL-E is the only real exception to that (ok, maybe Eternal Sunshine too).

The problem with movie lists is that no one agrees with them. The kiddies want their kiddie movies, the average movie goer wants his average junk, the cinephiles want their stuff, the arthouse guy wants his stuff, etc.
I don’t know in which group I fit in but I make it short.
Most deserving: Serenity
Most missing: Donnie Darko
Imo the rest is pretty much junk. It seems the 2000s were a pretty bad decade for si-fi movies…

I am Legend was a first rate piece of Hollywood trash.
To me it felt the movie went like this: movie starts, tension building, building, building, dog dies BAM movies over.
Where was Titan AE? It was an incredible film, sure it bankrupted Fox Animation, but it was an incredible film combining traditional and 3D animations long before anyone else. Not to mention the story was great!

I think in order to solve all the conflict here a new list is needed in order named “10 Science Fiction Movies of the 2000s that STLMo forgot to mention in 20 Science Fiction Movies of the 2000s list”. You don’t have to be offended by this list as it is the authors opinion and in no way you are compelled to endorse it and revere as the final word of God.

I thought Eteernal Sunshine was an interesting choice for number one. You don’t really feel like you’re watching a sci-fi film. Agree with others about Equilibrium. It’s not the greatest film ever but still underrated.
I have absolutely no interest in seeing I Am Legend. I loved the book and The Last Man On Earth, not sure if I’ve seen The Omega Man.
Also, there’s too many Tom Cruise films on the list. I hate Tom Cruise.

I agree with some of these, don’t think anime belongs on a list about best movies because animated film is not the same medium, there’s no acting, no directing, just animation.
I never got the love that Children of Men gets, its an okay movie. Don’t care for Minority Report and I am LEgend so completely misses the point of the book that I can’t watch it seriously. But looking at a list of all the sci fi movies that came out, there’s nothing better to add that truly qualifies as sci fi. I argue with my friends that sci fi is a dead genre for the most part and it looks like this list proves it.

Hi,
I was pleasantly surprised to see this list today, and I for one appreciate your efforts STLmo! Great to see a TOP 20 on the LV for a change. Yeah these lists are NEVER to everbody’s tastes, but cutting through the doggerel it is always possible to uncover a few gems of the big screen.
I like your criteria and general critique. When I watch a movie I want a strong plot and real FX. CGI? I may as well boot up Final Fantasy X if I want CGI! ‘Great graphics do not a great movie make!’
So yeah, I’m looking out for Moon and Happy Accidents now, and was also intriged by Cloverfield. I’ve seen nearly all the others. Star Wars and Star Trek wouldn’t have made my top 20 of the decade though.
Have we had the top 10 time travel movies yet?
Just a thought…

I thought it was a good list. Obviously I have some issues with the order, but it’s an opinion list, so oh well. To the complainers, it is the author’s personal opinion, so write your own if it was that terrible.
20. Sad to say I still haven’t seen it, but I heard good things.
19. Excellent movie. Buildup was a little slow (but it had a LOT of backstory to bring to light), so I thought it’s slight indulgence of mindless action towards the end was deserved. Would’ve sucked if the whole movie was like that, but the little bit we had was well worth wait.
18. I really liked this movie. I haven’t read the book, but Will Smith is a great actor (good job on shifting your focus from rap to movies, Mr. Smith).
17. “Would you like some EXTRA BIG ASS FRIES!?” I love this movie. Not sure how much it belongs on a sci-fi list, but it’s inclusion made me laugh.
16. Good flick
15. Love it or hate it, it cannot be denied that visually the movie was top par. Yeah it was a rehash, but I really enjoyed it.
14. Not a fan of Cruise, screaming girls, or drawn out scenes in a basement, but overall I liked this movie. Especially since it included the tripods and red weed from the book (and I do love the book).
13. Haven’t seen it, but the trailer made me want to. Plus the computer was reminiscent of HAL 9000
12. A lot of people hated it, but I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. The ending kind of blew ass, but otherwise it was good.
11. Haven’t seen
10. Haven’t seen
9. As an avid Star Wars fan, I thought this was an excellent way to cap off the sub-par prequels.
8. Haven’t seen
7. As an avid STAR WARS fan… I loved this movie. Dammit.
6. Me no see.
5. No watch.
4. Heard it was good… Haven’t watched
3. Damn I’ve gotta get movie renting. Have yet to see
2. Never even heard of it
1. Meh

I’m curious as to how some of the posters here define science fiction? Do they mean that a specific film falls into the fantasy genre instead? Someone pointed out Eternal Sunshine…as not being sf.My thinking is if the plot deals with technology that currently does not exist,or if it does it’s in its early stages compared to the movie’s highly advanced stage, then qualifies as sf.Thoughts anyone?

I didn’t want to see Avatar at all. Whenever a movie gets too much hype, I usually stay away. (I never saw Titanic and hope never to do so.) But although Avatar wasn’t the greatest, it was just a fun movie. I loved the look of it, and it moved right along. It didn’t drag like bad movies typically do. Of course the bad guy was way – way over the top – absolutely ridiculous. I actually found myself liking the main character, Jake (Sam Worthington) in spite of the cliched personality he was playing.
I have to agree with all the Tom Cruise hating here. I never cared for him and even less so after all his weird antics on Oprah and such.
Michael Caine is always a favorite of mine and he was good to watch in Children of Men. Clive Owen was also good in this, I thought.
Star Trek was another fun movie and I liked the casting. Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (an amazing Bones), and yes, I liked Simon Pegg as Scotty.

Some hard work there STLMo, Rotten tomatoes had good ratings for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, so i gave it a try, 20 mins into the movie i felt asleep. I was ashamed of my 1st try and some how summoned up enough courage to give it a 2nd try, the next morning.15 mins of fighting out extreme drowsiness, I finally gave up. I thought maybe the movie critics are so freakin old that they give good ratings for movies that put them to sleep, since old men sleep often. No disrespect to senior citizens.

Wow, you really have NO idea what a science-fiction movie is, do you? Brush up on your film theory before posting a list as idiotic as this one. I am a big fan of the site but this is awful. My film freak and film journalist heart bleeds and cringes in horror at the stupidity of this list.
Plus, films such as Sunshine are, though scientifically not entirely accurate, not bad science-fiction films. There’s a reason why there’s the word “fiction” in that genre denomination. And what, light sabers (you chose from the NEW Star Wars trilogy, are you insane?!) are more realistic suddenly than reactivating our sun? Puhleeze.
This list is so bad, inconsistent and incohesive that it should be removed. Shame on you.

The list was okay, but since movie lists are highly subjective I’m not going to waste my time whining about the order, or how excluding WALL-E from any sci-fi movie list makes the author’s taste and credbility questionable.
I find it amusing how the author complained that “F/X movies” are crap, and derided District 9 for devolving into a shoot-em-up, but then puts Attack of the Clones onto the honorable mentions list because of its last 45 minutes of non-stop action.
Also, thank you for including Moon. That movie will never get as much recognition as it deserves.

Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine/Sidious gave one of the best performances of the decade in any genre
really? no, really do you think this or are you just messing with us? i could blindly pick a movie out of the $1 bin at walmart and they will have better acting performances
The two standout performances: Simon Pegg (from Shaun of the Dead – the decade’s best zombie film) as Scotty and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy.

I was long waiting for this list!!!!!!! thank so much but i do have some comments so if anyone can help me PLEASE DO!!!
#20. Is this or the sequel worth watching? should i watch them in order?
#18 Stupid ending, will smith once again saved a movie
#15 Worth seeing, definitely, a “masterpiece?” no way… pretty cliche characters, but the visuals were cool
#14 TERRIBLE MOVIE, but also TERRIBLE BOOK
#8 I have a question about this one. Is it a 2009 release? because it says 2002 under your thing but the youtube video says 2009 on the top…unless thats the name of the movie?… but it was uploaded in 2008 so I kind of assume is a 2009 movie.
I am curious of why i didnt hear about this movie, as I live in South Korea. Has it come out dubbed yet (so i can DL it) or is it still in korean theaters so i can just go watch it? My korean isnt good enough to watch a movie without subs so if someone would help me out here, this movie sound awesome..
While I disagree with #1 even being a Sci Fi, I will let is slide because a) its a good film, and b) you didnt fail to recognize #3 Minority report as an awesome film, and one of my personal favorites which is often overlooked!…

I do not agree with this list. I dont think the author has an understanding of what makes a good science fiction story
for instance
regarding the comments about The Day After Tomorrow, The Core, Sunshine and 2012
grouping Sunshine in with those others is a travety. sometimes, oddly enough, scientific plausiblity is secondary to the message of the movie. Sunshine was a beautifully filmed work of art. and was more a story of human condition then a bunch of guys flying a huge bomb into the sun
Terrible list

HAHAHA loving the Avatar arguements, has anyone seen Fern Gully? It was released about 3 years before Disney adapted pocahontos and i swear its even closer in story to avatar.
i feel really bad for the authors of lists like these because there are always going to be a bunch of Ass Hats who find it Necessary to come out and rip them a new one over their selection. The only real way to an idea of how good a film is by voting for movies.
The draw back on that is that some people may not have seen a lot of these films.
To whoever said 28days later is horror and then The Descent should be on this list, you cant have it both ways they are either both horror or both sci fi/ horror

Mike, I did my thesis on Science Fiction (namely “Do Androids Dream” and although of course the issue is somewhat subjective, I’d say that while science fiction does incorporate advanced technology, what really makes it sci fi is that the piece raises philosophical questions caused by said technology. For that reason, to me, Star Wars is more of a fantasy/adventure film than Sci-Fi while Frankenstein is totally sci-fi. Finally, for my money “the Prestige,” should have been #1 by a mile.

Fail list.
Sunshine is a fantastic movie and Danny Boyle is one of the finest directors (he also did 28 days later).
Avatar was soooooooo shit! Moon took a worn out idea but was pretty good IMO. Idiocracy – one of the worst films ever made. War of the worlds…just threw up a bit in my mouth. I am Legend – the alternative ending was so much better but lacked commercial appeal which is all the studios care about.
I dont think anything made in the last ten years can match science fiction classics of the 60s and 70s and considering the available technology this says a lot.

I really didn’t like this list, it was incredibly subjective. I disagree with most of the personal judgements made on the list. I think some things must have been said in an attempt to sound funny, but it feel way short of the mark.

(#143) Well put.
The nerdlinger author of this list seems more interested in fast cars, shiny robots, spaceships and big explosions than the philosophical and moral implications that make a science fiction film truly great.

Sunshine was an awesome sci fi movie with actual smart action and believable, albeit improbable, science, by an acclaimed director (danny boyle) who is featured on the list for another movie. Stupid to say it’s only FX driven, when you have the CG filled I am Legend on the list, which completely missed the friggin point.

Does anyone read this far down a list? I don’t. But I’ve been wanting to say this. Avatar is more like Dune than anything else. I haven’t seen anyone mention that. Maybe Dune is too long ago.
Anyway, this is a universal and timeless story that’s told again and again. That doesn’t make it a rip off of something else. It’s just the re-telling with the biggest budget.
Dune by Frank Herbert. The book, not the movie.

Star Wars isn’t sci-fi. It’s more of a fantasy that happens to take place in space.

The biggest budget, and nothing else. No creativity or imagination. Yes, it’s a universal and timeless story. So is pretty much everything else (there was an influential Russian scholar who identified something like twelve different stories in folklore, of which each individual tale was a derivative). People don’t just accuse a film of being a plagiarism for having a similar story to something else. Avatar seems to have been stolen fucking verbatim from Pocahontas, with only the most superficial of changes made. The real question is whether Cameron was aware that he was remaking Pocahontas while he was working on the film.
How about I make up an original story right now, and you tell me what you think of it:
Larry Spotswood must become a Yogi in order to defeat the evil Confederacy lead by Garth Trader and restore balance to the Energy. Along the way he meets Owen Twelve-Canopy (an old Yogi), Hank Slovo (a rogueish space pirate) and a big bear-gorilla thing called Ruminatobacco…
Do you see where I’m going with this, or was that too subtle for you?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest two older movies that deserve a spot in the Top 20.
The original Terminator—A nicely fashioned time travel piece that doesn’t boggle the mind with a lot of paradox theory. And since Schwarzenegger played the bad guy his “acting” capabilities didn’t get in the way. It’s a shame what the franchise has done to such a good 1st chapter.
The Abyss–granted a tad hokey, it did introduce some very state of the art technology to the general public. As well as effecting the invention of some scuba technology still in use today. And there was no hidden agenda propaganda in the first contact made between the humans and aliens.
By today’s standards these two may seem unimportant and stale, but at the time of their release they were vastly entertaining.

STLMo- I think you should have taken the “no superheroes” restriction off. Iron Man AND Watchmen were waaay better than a number of movies on this list. although I agree with most of this list, it seems like you put movies on the list even though you didn’t actually believe they should be on the list. I mean, “best” lists are always going to be opinionated, so take out the movies you don’t like. simple. also, I have deleted all memory of anything George Lucas has done in the last 18 years. that man has ruined my childhood that he helped make great. in my head, George Lucas died in 1991 and the last movie he made was The Last Crusade. By doing this, I am able to look back fondly on my childhood once again.

sometimes i forget that these list are mostly driven by opinion, and personality. I could not disagree more with these pics, it seems as if the person doing this had no idea about film, what defines sci fi or how to show any amount of respect at all.
1) avatar is about as mindless as district 9, please tell me how taking a page from apartheid is any different from taking a page from displacement of aboriginals.
2) don’t write your list with so much derogatory opinion, we want to read them but not be force fed your cynicism.
3) its nice that you include lesser known titles but it smacks of pretention as it seems you included these to give us the false impression you know what you are talking about.
4) cloverfield was a flop and for good reason, take a DV cam and make a movie? give me a break, there was as much sci fi in that as there was in godzilla, why isn’t the largest lizard on this list then?
5) pitch black was Okay, but what do you mean by believable villains? the monsters? blades version of vamps is more realistic, at least they take the time to explain the villains a bit, and BTW villains in film are usually more than groupings of monsters that are never anything more than a source of danger and excitement, anyone who writes for film (as i do) knows this is an easy way out and an easy way to construct your film.
on a separate note, how stupid are the writers of this list to include an overblown piece of garbage like “revenge of the sith”. for those of us that were waiting for a darth vader origin flik let me tell you how disappointing it was, and how disappointing i was to see it on this list with so many other great films left out, did you have to put it on here for fear of the lucas camp?
and BTW, lets be honest here, we all like to pick on battlefield earth, and it was crap, but it was not nearly as bad as most sci fi fliks that came out a decade before, cgi tech and sci fi have gone hand in hand for as long as cgi has existed so why can’t religion use it as the rest of hollywood does, i hate to stick up for that god awful movie but i feel the list makers here put it in the intro to this list because like most writers and bloggers, they like to go with pop trends and not think for themselves
you want to make lists, telling us all what to believe and what to think, then pay attention and take your job more seriously.

@zak (157)
Thank you for the reminder…
Primer is one of the greatest Science fiction movies of all time and deserves a mention. It is reminiscent of a Kubrick movie, specifically 2001, in the sense that both leave you in a confused state that after repeated viewings start to make more sense until it finally clicks what is going on. 2001 was a very visual movie and Primer was a very Dialogue based movie. Primer is a good example of Time Travel that actually kind of makes sense. It’s also a good example of old ideas being used in new ways to create a world of fiction that is almost completely believable. If anybody hasn’t seen it, it’s a great movie, and doesn’t have a completely predictable, or, for that matter, understandable ending. I actually had to analyze it to get it, but it’s GREAT. It’s honestly up there with 2001.

28 Days Later! Are you kidding? It’s “The Day of the Triffids” with ‘zombies’ (okay they’re “NOT zombies, but people who are still very much alive but driven insane/bloodthirsty by the virus.”)
Check the basic points of the movie:
1. man wakes up alone in a London hospital
2. meets up with girl whom he rescues and forms a relationship with
3. survivors end up terrorised not just by “zombies” (triffids) but also units of the newly militarised state
4. said couple ends up finding refuge in the coiuntryside in an isolated location thinking they’re the last people left alive when sudden contact occurs in the form of a helicopter (an aeroplane in the book) flyover.
Thery couldn’t even come up with an original storyline.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! Are you kidding to the power of a thousand:
I can watch just about anything in the horror and/sci-fi genre in particular – and that particular “sleeping pill in a DVD case” has got to be the biggest piece of unmitigated bullshit it has ever been my misfortune to have watched. Not only do I want my money back – I want the entire 108 minutes of my life BACK!!!
As for being one of Jim Carrey’s finest roles – how about his serious roles in The Truman Show or Man on the Mon or his comedy roles which were not simply “rubber-faced” silliness like Bruce Almighty or the Ace Ventura’s and The Mask – or especially his funny, but menacingly sinister roles as in Me, Myself & Irene, The Cable Guy, Lemony Snicket or even as The Riddler in Batman.

this list is far from flawless. I agree n°1 is good.
But I disagree with several of other choices.
I Am Legend is almost embarassing due to its nothingness.
also Minority Report is unwatchable after the plot twist at the true ending (and becomes shit).
About AVATAR: american people keeps talking about “dance with wolves” o “pocahontas”. however, it is not true that everything in this world is about america, you know? it has been pointed out more than once that the whole idea of stronger and more advanced populations during the history just wiped out less advances cultures.
Avatar was a great movie and his plot is not under par compared to at least half the movies in this list (not to mention all the stuff that comes out these days).
Avatar received a lot of hate well before getting to the theaters, exactly as it happened to Titanic.
Cameron showed all you haters where truth lies: entertaining cinema is about ENTERTAINMENT, a thing that a lot of movies with more intricated and “smart” plot fail to deliver.

Cant believe Solaris is not included in this list and Avatar is.
Avatar is just computer effects with a well known story line, totally predictable and a classic example of using music and special effects to lead you to a specific path.
Solaris is about conflicts in our minds and explores character emotions and reactions, using silence to let the viewers think for themselves.
Personally, I dont even consider Avatar to be a science fiction film. Same old things wrapped up in new shiny box just to take my money.

What the hell is Sunshine doing along in the same sentence with the Rolland Emmerich blockbusters and being deemed a “dumb F/X movie”?! What the fuck?! It’s one of the smartest sci-fi movies of last decade; it’s hardly a blockbuster at all, there’s little F/X shots (but they look great regardless) and the movie concentrates more on the effects the mission and “the dead zone” have on the scientists on board the Icarus II (their ship).

“I am Legend” does absolutely no justice to the original story, changing the ending not only changes where the title comes from to make it a non sequitur, but it also changes the entire POINT of the story. The point is that he is the bad guy, the very central theme of the movie is basically cultural elitism and relativism. Eliminating that in favor of john woo action sequences is like changing the final act of Twelve Angry Men to a 12-way Crouching-Dragon-inspired kung fu fight. Sorry, doesn’t belong on the list.
War of the Worlds had plot holes big enough to drive a semi truck full of tapes of the original radio broadcast through, and also changed things and kept the name. Once again a name does not a story make, the theme wasn’t changed but why did crash-landing cylinders have to become highly improbable buried spheres? A word-for-word recreation of the seminal work would have still thrilled audiences.
Star Trek also committed the sin of needlessly changing things to no plot effect. In addition it took the same slapdash approach to the ST canon that ruined many recent forays into the star trek universe. Now that may sound like I’m just nitpicking, but for a universe that is renown for its obsessive fans that could quote the weight, top warp speed (emergency and cruising) number of shuttle bays and number of phaser banks on 12 different Federation ships, as well as their years of service… When you’re working with a canon like that you’d damn well better get it right and not go mucking things up just for the heck of it (or worse, as I suspect, out of laziness).

Okay, I am officially confused. Why on earth is Idiocracy on this or any list of the best sci-fi movies of the Noughties (2000s)?
I accidentally saw that movie a while back on a low-budget television channel (I watch a lot of movies in general and I am not really a movie snob) and it was bad, in my honest opinion. Just really bad. Why does it get so much good vibes?
And I get that it provides social commentary on the state of the human race but really, District 9 provides a way better conversation in that regard and is also one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time (Avatar included)
Anyway, had to get my opinion in there too!

I have a LOT of love for Joss Whedon and Firefly is my absolute favorite work of his. But you have to admit that Serenity, while great for fans of the show, was not open enough for new audiences to get into. And to be honest, aside from the fan appeal it wasn’t an incredible movie. It basically just tied up loose ends from the series. I appreciate that as a fan, but as a movie it wasn’t that great.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, I think that´s what Avatar was dreaming to achieve, although it fell miserably short in practically every single aspect, even the visual effects were more astounding on FF (considering the tools back then), let alone the Japanese mastery over this kind of films and the intelligent feasible plot and acting. Ultimately, everyone has different opinions on this.
The only way to really form a consensus of the majority is to go by total earnings. Many may decry this but obviously if people enjoy a movie they see it multiple times and spread word of mouth. Anything else is simply subjective opinion of the writer.
Therefore:
1. Avatar
2. Revenge of the Sith
3. The Matrix Reloaded
4. Attack of the Clones
5. War of the Worlds
6. I am Legend
7. Iron Man
8. Serenity
etc…

avatar…i dont know where people are getting all this ‘ground breaking special effects’ nonsense from…
have people forgotten about other films such as Lord of the Rings and Jurassic Park? Whilst not being sci-fi films, they at least manage to marry an actual storyline with FX.
I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who is a fan of sci-fi and a fan of Avatar simultaneously.

@samm parnell (samm_parnell@hotmail.com) (170):
The issue with Avatar’s lineage is not whether it is derivative, but rather whether it adds anything other than spectacle to the source material. It does not. The plotting is color-by-numbers cinema. Add to that the hackneyed script and you’re going to have a portion of the audience react really negatively. For some the spectacle will be enough to overlook James Cameron’s habit of telegraphing every moment of a film between 20 seconds and 20 minutes before the moment arrives. For others (like myself) that habit will render the spectacle unwatchable.
As for the inclusion of Revenge of the Sith, frankly, you’re being too kind to the author. The only reason that movie even appears to have any redeeming value is that the two before it were somehow worse. The way the plot played out actually cheapened the original trilogy, and for that the movie deserves nothing but obscurity. ANY list of good Sci Fi movies that includes that steaming heap is at least one movie too long.

Dude, you killed your list even before it began! Your introduction is a mess!!!
You begin by saying “Scientifically dumb F/X movies such as The Day After Tomorrow, The Core, Sunshine and 2012, where the science, plot, situations and characters were really awful” were omitted, yet “I am legend” and “idiocracy” are included?!?!?!
So a film where a guy wakes up in a future where everyone is a moron is ‘scientifically intelligent’??? If this is so, how can you call “Sunshine”, ‘scientifically dumb’???
And has this list been slightly influenced by the on scificool.com or is it just me?

Due to this list, I just saw “2009 Lost Memories”
This movie is mediocre at best.
The characters have no depth. Absolutely no character is build, as some do complete 360s with no explanation. The plot was… sigh… a bit far fetched but I let is slide, however it was pushing it.
To be honest, the biggest disappointment was that i didnt care for none of the characters the whole movie.
If you wanna watch a korean movie, watch Old Boy instead… that is one freaken amazing movie.

@Nauplius (234):
This list is way better, submit it to listverse!!!
I have lots of problems with this list…
including
1. Eternal sunshine is not a sci fi
2. Star Trek. While a decent film, and nice effects, i dont know many true star trek fans who liked this movie. It was so out of character of the whole franchise, and the script was dumbed down for non fans -_-… I am not an advocate of dumbing down a movies script to fill a broader audience.
3. STAR WARS IS NOT SCI FI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most people who dont like the sci fi genre (because its too complex or whatever) like star wars. Its light sabers and fun things in space, but guess what, there is no science ever explained in it. By definition, I think sci fi, should have some …ummmm science?!!?!??!… STAR WARS IS A SPACE FANTASY… yes FANTASY like lord of the rings.
4. Children of men was over rated by far
5. Clover field sucks
6. War of the Worlds sucks even more… actually anything by M. Night Shyamalan… with the exeption of signs *which was only OK* SUCKS MAJOR BALLS
7. Avatar is widely over rated… again liked by non sci fi fans. COol effects but its fern gully and pocahontas… i know this is kind of oversaid but… the story is NOTHING NEW…
8. District 9 i liked, but… it was a good idea that they ruined… coulda been GOOD!
9. Finally, I am Legend was an OK movie. Not ok because the script was good, or the plot, or the editing… no… it would have been a COMPLETE DISASTER OF A MOVIE (think 20 yrs later… yes i know you have never heard of it) if it wasnt for the brilliant acting of will smith. This guy is an amazing actor, him and Denzel!… but anyways movie was OK…like a 5 at best
The rest I havent seen, or I thought were OK (mostly the former)

Though I haven’t watched some of the films, I feel able to criticize some of the author’s choices based on the ones I’ve actually seen. Two of them are way too underated: 28 days later (a smart crossover beetween horror and sci-fi) and Children of Men (with two of the most creative and stunning action scenes ever shot). And you simply missed the two best of all sci-fi films in the 2000′s by really far: WALL-E and Donnie Darko.

@Maximuz04 (238)
Nobody cares.
Hello! All the trek movies suck compared to any star wars.
Will Smith is NOT a good actor, he just does blockbusters which are often hit and miss (see Wild Wild West). Denzel isn’t that good of an actor either. See anything with Daniel Day-Lewis in it and you’ll know how acting is done properly.
Children of Men was one of the most criminally underrated movies of the decade.
And everyone has figured out that Avatar has similarities to Pocahontas and Fern Gully by now, thanks anyways. People just keep on forgetting how fun it is to watch.
And the sixth sense was M. Night’s best movie, NOT signs.
And who are you to suddenly decide that the greatest sci-fi film of all time is NOT sci-fi?
SPACE FANTASY is not a genre. Nobody has heard of this.
M. Night Shaymalan did not direct anything on this list, why are you bringing him up! (War of the Worlds was directed by Speilberg)
Good try though.

Good list! I’m glad someone didn’t fall for the “wow” factor of Avatar, despite its glaringly obvious faults. I’m also proud to see “Girl Who Leapt Through Time” on the list too, as that is on my top 10 best of the decade.
Since you include anime, you might consider Satoshi Kon’s “Paparika” on the list too. Hardcore science fiction (and a bit weird too.)
245 Cosmic Muffin
January 27th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
I’m going to have to disagree with Revenge of the Sith being on this list. The Star Wars prequels are some of the most god awful movies I’ve ever seen and should not even be considered as being list worthy films. I don’t think they even deserve to be an honorable mention. The effects are excessive, the plots are complete nonsense, the scripts are utter crap and Hayden Christianson fails. I don’t think semi-decent, but mostly horrible and CG ridden, action sequences can deem a movie as being a top science fiction film, especially considering all the other great sci-fi movies out there. I think it’s pretty obvious I have a vendetta against the prequels.
On another note I just watched Moon yesterday and I thought it was excellent. I’ll have to look into a few others on the list I haven’t seen.
I do feel that Children of Men, considering it is my favorite movie, should be closer to the top along with District 9 and 28 Days Later, just because it’s cinematography is gorgeous at times.

@Conrad (241):
You interestingly confused nobody cares with “I disagree with your opinion”.
1. I dont remember claiming that the Star Trek films were better than the Star Wars films, I claimed the new film was done to appease non fans (a fact) and that star wars is not science fiction (my opinion, shared by many). I liked the star wars films, but just like you wouldnt say LOTR is sci fi, I just think star wars doesnt belong.
2. Will Smith is hit and miss? are you kidding me, he had like 7 movies in a row that broke the 100 million mark… including wild wild west, ($113 mill, but sucked admittedly) and if you meant as far as content… well that is your (stupid) opinion.
3. I have seen Daniel Day act, and hes not bad at all, but saying Denzel is not a good actor is just stupid (again)
4.Children of men was Alright, nothing special… the plot wasnt developed enough for my taste, nor were the characters which made me not really care either way half way through the movie (not the sign of a great movie). The really long single shot in the middle was cool but i was hardly blown away…
and
5. District 9… REALLY??!?!? I was really hoping it was the best movie I saw last yr, and I was waiting for it for a really long time, but as much as I wanted to like it (and i did, a solid 7ish) it has just too many plot holes, and things that simply dont add up. This is kind of a big deal in sci fi!
6. I pointed out myself of how I am aware that people know the similarities (were you just stroking your ego?) and the visuals were really good, and it was enjoyable, but to call it a top 15 of the decade is a huge stretch… another solid 7 movie.
Furthermore, people were WOWED by the whole 3D effect… from people I know, this was the main thing that stood out. Well, while cool, we’ve had this in california for over 15 yrs, so its nothing new.
7. oops, confused the village for war of the worlds… but war of the worlds still sucks…
I forgot about the 6th sense, but signs was still better, the 6th sense was very predictable.
8. The greatest sci fi of all time… what? star wars? Most of my friends who know sci fi agree it is a decent movie, and very enjoyable, but has no science. I didnt claim “Space fantasy” was a genre, I was pointing out it was a fantasy film (which i thought i made clear by comparing it to LOTR) which simply happened to take place in space. Who is this nobody you keep talking about? you speak for everyone?
Finally I am very surprised you took all of this so personally… “if youre not a movie nerd dont act like one”?… yet another example of people being overly brave and tough online.

This list is one of the worst ever.
The end of I Am Legend completely wrecked the story line of a fascinating book and a promising start. For a zombie-esque movie see 28 Days or for a movie about isolation see Moon.
War of the World was horrible. Just horrible.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was OK but I figured out the whole storyline 15 minutes into the film and then was just bored for the next 2 hours.
Cloverfield was just a new take on Godzilla which tried to cover up gaping plot holes with shaky hand held camera work.
How could you omit WALL-E and Donnie Darko and Primer. I would have all above the current number one.

January 29th, 2010 at 9:14 am
1. I Am Legend, Idiocracy, War of the Worlds, Revenge of the Sith and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind do not belong in this list for either quality or genre reasons
2. Avatar and Star Trek are visually advanced, but that does not excuse the fact that they’re recycled and uninspired
3. Children of Men should be higher
4. you decided to include anime, but left out Ghost in the Shell? sure, the first one was 1995, but the other two were no less brilliant
5. Donnie Darko and The Prestige at least deserve a mention, they’re genius films
252 Luke
January 29th, 2010 at 11:32 am
Avatar or anything Star Wars should not be anywhere near this list.
Eternal sunshine is a fine winner.
Primer and Donnie Darko should definately be near the top of it.
District 9 is a masterpeice.
I also consider The Dark Knight to be science fiction. Being a comic book adapt should not disquality. Only quality matters. Star Wars films are space fantasy anyway, as is Avatar.
The Dark Knight should be your number 2 or 3 then.
Thanks.

Maximu04 @247
Thank you for you reply, I’m glad to hear your defense,
now if i may, respectfully, offer a reply of my own:
I still don’t understand why you’re bringing up M. Night, the village is definitely not sci fi.
And I’m sorry if you took hit and miss to be about the success of his movies, i did acknowledge that all he does are blockbusters, Wild Wild West, indeed a blockbuster making how ever many millions it made. But I mean his movies often SUCK, as is the case with Wild Wild West.
Why did you bring up Denzel in the first place?
I said Denzel isn’t THAT good of an actor, he has one oscar (hooray for him) but Daniel Day-Lewis has two, (and is #5 on the top 10 male performances on this site!) and Denzel has also been in some shit movies, Daniel Day-Lewis has not.
And yes, when you consider it, Star Wars is essentially a fantasy in space, but that still is not a genre.
I loved Avatar and will continue to defend it, but didn’t mention anything about the 3D, and frankly I will still love it when i watch it on good ol 2D DVD.
And I’m genuinely sorry you couldn’t “get” Children of Men.
I find there is a difference between the greatest sci-fi of all time and the best sci-fi of all time. Star Wars may not be the best (Bladerunner? Aliens?) but it is the greatest, spawning an incredible fan base, generating a mythos and having a huge impact on pop-culture, still being felt more than thirty years later.
I think District 9 is incredible, even just for its orignality, shot by a first time director, as a pseudo documentary, in South Africa, with a low-budget vibe and better-than-blockbuster special effects, its like Bourne Identity for science fiction.
Also, I’m kind of intrigued by the idea of a Star Trek that wasn’t “dumbed down” but all possibilites seem to end in “unwatchable to anyone who isn’t a true fan”. Maybe that’s what you wanted?
And perhaps the final comment was uncalled for, but bringing up M. Night and Denzel as some kind of defense of you position is… well… stupid.
But finally- I apologize for playing the whole “tough because I’m anonymous” part, and, I’m finding your comments interesting.

Seriously terrible list, way too subjective. Instead of using your own opinions look on Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB to see what the vast majority of critics and the public think about te films.
District 9 is way too low. Children of Men, The Road, Star Trek and District 9re the most original in my opinion, while War of the Worlds, Cloverfield and Minority Report are too high. Eternal Sunshine is a good film, but does not belong on a sci-fi list, it’s true genre is romance.
Avatar does not deserve to be the highest-earning film of all time. The plot is terrible and generic, driven by 90% of the movie being CGI, come to think of it, just like Titanic, except Titanic didn’t have that much CGI. Maybe Avatar could the Oscar for best Animated film?

I’m not really sure whether it can be classed as science fiction, but Donnie Darko is one of the best films of all time. Also, 28 Days Later should be in the top five at least. I Am Legend would have been good if I hadn’t finished reading the book the night before, there was too many changes made from it and ver little from the book put into the film. The Matrix should also be on the list somewhere; and Children Of Men should be higher.

@Thayne Are you joking? Batman and Robin had twice the gross of The Godfather Part II. Does that make it better?
About the list… I’m not going to complain about the ordering, it’s hard enough to make a list, but Wall-e needed to be there. Also, I Am Legend didn’t have atmosphere, it wasn’t a meditation on isolation, it was a straight-up action flick and a bad one at that.
Also, the definition of good acting is not being able to there someone’s acting. Don’t remember much about the new Star Wars, but Simon Pegg was nothing but stupid comic relief. I love him, but that was not a “standout performance.”

I really disliked I am Legend- I thought the producers did an amazingly lazy job on it. War of the Worlds was just not enjoyable at all, it was just a cliche and overdramatic flick.

Also, I haven't seen The Girl Who Leapt Through Time so I can't say anything about it's position on the list… But if I may address all the haters who are shitting their pants and saying cartoons shouldn't be on the list: I'm pretty sure the maker of the list chose the movies based the integrety of the plot and storylines… not by the quality of the acting. Well, I thought War of The Worlds was trash. You pointed out the obvious errors and the storyline was nothing like the book. I know that screenwriters have a bit of flexibility but this guys arms and legs must be joined with rubber bands.
Anyway, the best sci fi movie 2000's has got to be The Book of Eli. A sci fi spaghetti western. Brilliant.
