Because it is Saturday I decided to do a list I have been wanting to do for a very long time. This is a list of movie trailers that have been recut by amateurs to change their genre. For example, a horror movie might be recut to make it a romantic comedy. I can spend all day watching these so I hope that all the listverse readers will enjoy this list as much as I enjoyed the hours picking out the entries.
This one has a slightly offputting voice-over, but I have included it because one slightly NSFW moment made me laugh out loud. See if you can work out which scene it is.
Here we see Willy Wonka in quite a different light from the books and films. Just when you thought Gene Wilder couldn’t be more sinister in the role, you are proven wrong.
This is a film all geeks love. Here we see the a comedy turned into a psychological thriller.
This is actually the second recut by the same person – the first one is also excellent but it doesn’t allow embedding. If you want to view that too, you can find it here. Both are recut to be horror movies.
This brilliant recut shows how a skilled editor can totally transform a film with virtually no changes except the music.
No need to close your eyes in terror during this one – this is a very well done recut of the Ring to make it appear to be a tearjerker.
This is another straight movie turned gay. It is hilarious and extremely well done. If you like this one, you should also check out Brokeback to the Future, Meet Joe Brokeback, and The Empire Brokeback. We could do nearly an entire list based on brokeback recuts.
Frankly, it doesn’t take a lot of recutting to make Top Gun appear to be a gay movie, but here we have it anyway – from a military film to a gay romance.
Here is our favorite horror movie recut as a romantic comedy. It just goes to show how clever film editors can be and why we so often see a film trailer we love for a film we hate. In this recut they even manage to include the bathroom scene with the dead lady!
This is the recut that got the whole thing going. It is quite well known (for reasons that are obvious when you see how good it is). Enjoy.

I have always suspected that some people have too much time on their hands. That possibly includes me, as I’ve just spent about 20 minutes I should have spent on preparing a lesson for Monday.
As Jamie alluded in #6, music plays such an important part in establishing the mood. I once saw a documentary which showed the process of writing film music. It started by showing the same clip with two different background soundtracks (Chopin op 10 no 3 and Psycho-type music) and the effect was totally different.
Re #4 – I am reading LOTR at the moment, and watching the dvds as I go. I’ve noticed a slight homosexual tinge in the book and particularly the movie. I’m also worried about the class distinction between Frodo and Sam.
Re #3 – There’s a movie in which Quentin Tarantino makes a cameo as a party-going expounding his theory that Top Gun has a homosexual subtext.

If I remember rightly, it was Shining that kicked things off. But you’re right – Scary Mary Poppins is certainly the best. I like it because it exploits darker elements that are already lurking beneath the surface in the actual film. I’ve never read the original book, but I’m told it was quite macabre in places.

@lyrebyrd (45): It really was a toss up for me whether to use Brokeback to the Future or Brokeback of the Ring – I chose the ring because it seemed to have a bit more emotion – it still feels like the mood of the original brokeback trailer, whereas the other made me laugh (which is good – but not quite so true to the original brokeback idea). Does that make sense? It is 6am here – I don’t think my brain is working yet!

Worst example of editing for a real movie for me has to be the trailer for Sweeney Todd. I wasn’t aware of the work or the original movie so I saw the trailer without any other context. The trailer makes it seem almost like a barber Jack the Ripper. What they leave out is that it’s a MUSICAL! So glad I discovered that before blowing $10 on it.

A great list!
As a former script supervisor in Hollywood, I know the difficulty of putting a film together so it makes the statement the director wants it to make (in fact, my job was to make sure things were filmed so that this could be achieved). These re-cuts are hilarious just exactly because they cross that line in either subtle or outlandish ways (I found the subtle changes made the largest changes, and so were the funniest).
Anyway, a truly enjoyable list.

This reminds me of something. Terry Gilliam’s Brazil came out a few years before I was born, so I never saw the trailer or Fox’s “Love Conquers All” recut of the film which was the first version of the film released. The first time I saw the film it was the director’s cut on DVD a few years ago. The DVD also had Fox’s cut of the film, Fox changed it a great deal (and shortened it by about an hour) but it’s still sort of dark apart from the tacked-on happy ending,* the transformation is nothing compared to the original trailer which makes it out to be of all things an office comedy. Studios pull that sort of thing all the time in real life, when they want a movie to be something else and they don’t have enough money or footage to make the transformation in the editing room they’ll just cut the trailer together to make it look like the movie they want it to be. Lord knows why they think viewers going to the theatre expecting one movie will be perfectly content watching a substantially different movie.
Shining is my favorite.
*(The following is a spoiler, but it is a 25-year-old film) Terry Gilliam should have known better than to film a happy ending as a dream sequence, of *course* the studio would just end the movie just before the main character wakes up from his dream and call that the ending, no matter how little sense the dream made, being as it was a frikkin’ dream. Without that reverie on film the studio wouldn’t have had much to work with to recut the film.

I thought that the "Top Gun" trailer was the original one. That, and the T-100 doing the "Humpty Dance" was pretty hysterical. All it takes is a soundtrack or score change to make just about ANY movie, turn into other one. I don't think I'll ever look at "Marry Poppins" the same way again!

hee hee! Office Space is positively brilliant, and studio-quality editing! But I can't believe Samir's "You are a very bad man!" wasn't used….
