Because it is Saturday I decided to do a list I have been wanting to do for a very long time. This is a list of movie trailers that have been recut by amateurs to change their genre. For example, a horror movie might be recut to make it a romantic comedy. I can spend all day watching these so I hope that all the listverse readers will enjoy this list as much as I enjoyed the hours picking out the entries.
This one has a slightly offputting voice-over, but I have included it because one slightly NSFW moment made me laugh out loud. See if you can work out which scene it is.
Here we see Willy Wonka in quite a different light from the books and films. Just when you thought Gene Wilder couldn’t be more sinister in the role, you are proven wrong.
This is a film all geeks love. Here we see the a comedy turned into a psychological thriller.
This is actually the second recut by the same person – the first one is also excellent but it doesn’t allow embedding. If you want to view that too, you can find it here. Both are recut to be horror movies.
This brilliant recut shows how a skilled editor can totally transform a film with virtually no changes except the music.
No need to close your eyes in terror during this one – this is a very well done recut of the Ring to make it appear to be a tearjerker.
This is another straight movie turned gay. It is hilarious and extremely well done. If you like this one, you should also check out Brokeback to the Future, Meet Joe Brokeback, and The Empire Brokeback. We could do nearly an entire list based on brokeback recuts.
Frankly, it doesn’t take a lot of recutting to make Top Gun appear to be a gay movie, but here we have it anyway – from a military film to a gay romance.
Here is our favorite horror movie recut as a romantic comedy. It just goes to show how clever film editors can be and why we so often see a film trailer we love for a film we hate. In this recut they even manage to include the bathroom scene with the dead lady!
This is the recut that got the whole thing going. It is quite well known (for reasons that are obvious when you see how good it is). Enjoy.

there's one for the wickerman (the rubbish nicolas cage version) where its been recut as a romantic comedy which is absolutely hilarious just because it works so well. worth checking out!

Office space and The Ring were edited really well.
And I knew that The Shining HAD to be on the list!
Dude. You had to bag on Christopher Reeves? I’m so kicikng you in the shin next time I see you. Superman is ALWAYS off limits dude.Reply by on August 12th, 2009 at Wednesday, August 12, 2009 @ 12:55 am@Redneck Mommy, actually, his name is Reeve, no “s”. I know this because I was the man’s biggest fan. I actually teared up when I went online to find the right date when he was paralyzed. But if I can’t mock the things that are sacred to me, I can’t mock the things that are sacred to others. nice list, didnt expect a few of these
Wow! Simply Wow! Great stuff n thanks Jamie, these types of list make my day
didt the lotr one appear on mtv a few years back, or was that the one with jack black
haha. the office space one is great
the office space one was brilliant
Brilliant list! And a good way to remember that promos, trailers and such easily deceive… something I should remember when reading spoilers for TV shows
(Not to shout ‘first!’, but this is the first time I had one of the earliest comments
I guess it pays off to live in another world zone xD)
Very cool! Thanks JF!
good one
OMG!. I love #8(Office Space). Always knew there was a darker side……
and without a doubt thanks for the list. just awesome.
Hehe brilliant
Fantastic idea for a list. Really amazing how different these movies seem.
Great list.
I have always suspected that some people have too much time on their hands. That possibly includes me, as I’ve just spent about 20 minutes I should have spent on preparing a lesson for Monday.
As Jamie alluded in #6, music plays such an important part in establishing the mood. I once saw a documentary which showed the process of writing film music. It started by showing the same clip with two different background soundtracks (Chopin op 10 no 3 and Psycho-type music) and the effect was totally different.
Re #4 – I am reading LOTR at the moment, and watching the dvds as I go. I’ve noticed a slight homo*****ual tinge in the book and particularly the movie. I’m also worried about the class distinction between Frodo and Sam.
Re #3 – There’s a movie in which Quentin Tarantino makes a cameo as a party-going expounding his theory that Top Gun has a homo*****ual subtext.
@astraya (14): I would love to know the name of that documentary – I find film music quite fascinating.
You're an inhuman monster!
premsaiusicforever on October 14, 2011 @smilininthe3rd I was just informed by my sis that they actually lived on Avenue A….don’t worry, I didn’t have it right either (at least I’m pretty sure it’s Avenue A…after looking up some lyrics). Hilarious point though.
You missed out this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF7_FjOfxPM
@mrjimmy (16): Hmm – can’t say I enjoyed that as much as Brokeback to the Future
These were fantastic. I needed a good laugh and this really helped.
You also missed this, Jamie. The Silence of the Lambs recut trailer.
Dr. Hannibal Lecter & Clarice Starling fall in love with each other! Pretty hilarious and good soundtrack too.
@jfrater (17): I hope you start posting like in the good ol’ days
Loved it! Never seen these before and thanks to this list, I’ll have something to keep me entertained for the next couple of hours! (that and of course, more lists…)
@astraya (14): Whoa! There is NOTHING homo*****ual at all in the Lord of the Rings. That sir, would be like calling Bruce Lee fat. You just watch it now mister. And also, for when you get to two towers, I hope you’ll enjoy learning about ents for what seems to be a million chapters.
Awesome list, JF!! I love recuts like these, and while I had seen a few, there were some new ones as well. Thanks!
Cosmomakeup on August 30, 2011 i like my big wide smile! i diitnefely do not have straight & white teeth but i do not let my teeth prevent me from smiling! in my opinion, smiles can bring people together and cheer up a stranger’s day, therefore i want to spread and share my happiness with others
IlovelouisDTV on April 17, 2011 if i went to my praked car after whatever i was doing, and i saw a buff black guy like that doing tricep extension on my bumper….i’d bus home and hopefully they’ll get bored of my car
on of the best list that i ever seen in my life
thanks jfrater
Brilliant list jfrater. I loved the mary poppins one!!
hahahahahaha! Love when people seem to have too much time on their hands. These were great. Nice list.
@ jf (15): I was at high school at the time, which is, like, last century, so I can’t remember the name, or anything else about it. Just this pair of scenes stuck in my mind.
Best list I’ve seen this year so far! That Terminator one is frickin’ amazing!
@peacefrog (21): Yes sir, you are absolutely right. As a LOTR fan, I find it annoying to hear people remark about ‘the gay friendship that evolves in the story’ etc stuff.
AMAZING! I have never heard of this stuff before, thoroughly enjoyed it XD
Jamie showing us all how its done. best list for ages. scary mary actually creeped me out
I love these things, there’s a couple that are really good on here there’s one, I think by the same person that did the Shining one, that makes West Side Story look like a zombie film.
i have loved these for years. i have often dreamed about what sort of mayhem would insue if a bunch of teenage girls saw the fake shining trailer and saw the real shining movie. greatest. practical. joke. ever.
If I remember rightly, it was Shining that kicked things off. But you’re right – Scary Mary Poppins is certainly the best. I like it because it exploits darker elements that are already lurking beneath the surface in the actual film. I’ve never read the original book, but I’m told it was quite macabre in places.
Great!…Just great…Just when i was gonna sit down and have another boring saturday ,you had to go and liven it up and make me laugh…You, sir, are a MONSTER!!!!!(lol jk btw this is an lol list)
An excellent list from evey angle!
Thanks, JF!
hi, Scary Mary – that one was great. Also the Terminator – very funny. The brokebacks are a bit cringeworthy.
The shining one is my favourite. I remember seeing it a few years ago and having a honest belly laugh. The one of BIG is pretty good too.
One of the best lists in some time now.
great list i like the terminteor that should be #1
here somthing extra for you
its very marvellous these facts help me in new thinkingand gain knowledge i think this site will do more thank u
Jamie… I’ve been away but now I’m back. It was this list that inspired me to comment. Brilliant job my friend. I offer this for the Star Wars fans:
Thanks JFrater! You always make the best lists! This one was no exception, good job.
After I was finished laughing loudly early Saturday morning, my son came in and asked what I was doing. I showed him these clips and we both agreed (after we stopped howling with laughter) that all the items on this list were awesome! It’s amazing how a movie genre can be changed with editing! Wonderful list! I, for one, would love to see more!
I know you mention Brokeback to the Future, but that really should be on here. It was one of the funniest, and one of the earlier ones, as I recall.
Video editing is an interest of mine, a good doco on some of the editing tricks used is:

Also, even though this isn’t stritly in the universe of this list, green screening – and how it’s used:

this is a really cool titanic recut, hahaha promise you would like this to be a real movie.
Yes, yes, and more yes!
@lyrebyrd (45): It really was a toss up for me whether to use Brokeback to the Future or Brokeback of the Ring – I chose the ring because it seemed to have a bit more emotion – it still feels like the mood of the original brokeback trailer, whereas the other made me laugh (which is good – but not quite so true to the original brokeback idea). Does that make sense? It is 6am here – I don’t think my brain is working yet!
hash I feel like such a silly little girl! Just hearing that song even with the horrid techno beat makes me tear up a little!
Worst example of editing for a real movie for me has to be the trailer for Sweeney Todd. I wasn’t aware of the work or the original movie so I saw the trailer without any other context. The trailer makes it seem almost like a barber Jack the Ripper. What they leave out is that it’s a MUSICAL! So glad I discovered that before blowing $10 on it.
Number 6 was should have been ranked higher imo. It reminded me of the movie One Hour Photo. Different but great list.
Hey Jfrater, I think you should include this to the recommended brokeback recuts. It is a recut of goodfellas, that is very well done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoCDh3lNzNo
Really loved this one! Always thought there was something off about those freaky oompa-loompas…
This is a genre that completely passed me by and it’s brilliant. Thanks JF too often people are just desperate to kiss your rear end but in this instance this is exactly what I’m going to do. Thanks for bringing these wonderful tailers to my attention and also for waiting until I had, had just the right amount of gin to make it work so well. Cheers mate
i also laughed at the terminator one, it was so funny. number 1 was really cool too. these recuts take a lot of work, skill and imagination! great list
Why isn’t this website called movieverse?
@hash (47): I would sooo watch that movie..lol
Awesome list…thank you!
