Bats have long given rise to horror stories (vampire bats), myths and misconceptions (such as blindness). Bats come in all shapes and sizes and are a very interesting and unique creature. This list looks at ten of the most unusual bats around. If you know of any others, be sure to mention them in the comments.

A species exclusive to western Mexico, the banana bat is noted for its very long snout, the longest of any bat (relative to size). It is nectarivorous, which means it feeds mostly on nectar and is an important pollinator in its tropical deciduous forest habitat. It gets its name because it is often found in banana plantations.

This white furred bat is found in tropical rain forests from Mexico to Brazil, and also in the island of Trinidad, in the Caribbean. It is a solitary animal that spends daylight roosting under a palm leaf, and then flies high at night, hunting moths and other flying insects.

This bat is noted for its weird “hairdo”, and for the strange odor males use to attract females during courtship. They are insectivores and live in the rain forests of central Africa.

This fruit eating species is found in Mexico and Central America, where it is known as “murcielago viejito” (“old man bat”) or murcielago zopilote (“vulture bat”), due to its naked, wrinkly face. They have a large flap of skin that they use as a mask to cover their face when they sleep.

These bats feed on flying insects and, just as many other bats, use echolocation to find them. Their enormous ears gives them even better hearing than that of smaller eared bats. They belong to diverse genera and are found in many parts of the world.

This large bat lives in Mexico, Central and South America and feeds mostly on fish. It uses its long clawed feet to grab the fish in the water surface and then feeds on the wing. It has a smaller relative, the Lesser Fishing Bat, that feeds on aquatic insects.

Ghost faced bats are widely spread in the New World, from the southern US to Peru. They practically lack noses, have strange hard skin flaps on their faces and a very prominent forehead which gives them a very weird appearance. They feed on nocturnal insects.

This bat, endemic to Madagascar, was thought to use suction cups on its wings and ankles to attach to palm leaves and other smooth surfaces. Today it is known that they don´t use suction, but rather adhesion, by producing a sticky substance that acts as a glue- the same kind of adhesion found in tree frogs and salamanders.

Found in the Philippines, the tube nosed bat is a critically endangered species found in rain forests. Discovered in 1984, this species is noted for its strangely tubular nostrils and the stripes on its back (very few bats have stripes). They feed mostly on figs and other fruit but may eat insects on occasion.

Found in the rain forests of Africa, this large bat gets its name for the huge, strangely shaped head of the males. Most of the male’s thorax is actually a resonating chamber that allows them to produce very loud calls to attract females. They feed on fruit and, occasionally, on other animals.

I was skeptical about this list when i saw the title but wow, great list.
i like the Mohawk bat, it looks awesome!!
ditto
It took me a while to understand the photo of that mohawk bat. hehe
Wow. Fantastic list. Very informative. I never knew some of these ugly looking critters existed! Nature is indeed full of surprises.
Good list, TyB. A little bit longer entries would have been nice, especially since your lists are always such a good read. The only addition I have is the tube-lipped bat (I think that’s what it’s called). It has the longest tongue of any mammal, relative to body size.
Little known fact: Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah’s name is a nod to his former days as the Americas’ most notorious bat hunter. The more you know.
wonder what raekwon the chef did
actually is it just me or is there a bizarre similarity between that ghost face bat and method man
http://static.tumblr.com/jehvgy9/th6ktqly7/624px-methodman.jpg
That’s rubbish. He got it from The Mystery of Chessboxing.
Here goes TyB again, saving the ass of this website. Great job TyB, you never cease to amaze us with your lists. But I noticed that this list is a little shorter than your usual lists.
I was actually surprised myself to see this list; I wrote it a long time ago and didn´t even remember it. I wonder what other lists I submitted and can´t remember anymore.
Damn, why did I read this list before going to bed? Thanks for a good list and the nightmares it will spawn.
Ghost Bat RUCKING FULES:-D
Tube Nosed Fruit Bat will forever haunt my dreams (and love life). Great list TyB.
Interesting, indeed! The Ghost Face Bat kind of weirded me out…I don’t know what I thought it was but definitely not a bat.
Oh, and the Hammer Headed Bat kind of reminds me of Mortimer Mouse.
Great list!
He reminds me of Joe the Camel, the old Camel cigarette shill man.
Looks like a moose head to me.
Same here. It definitely looks like a moose head to me as well. What a freaky bat.
Great list , hammer head bat looks like a camel .
no a moose
could be a Hippo
Moose Bat, I like that.
I was wondering how you got a picture of my mother in law in item number 7.
hahaha good one
Bruce Wayne would be proud
My GF just helped discover a new species of bat yesterday. Don’t think it is anything too interesting, just hybrids that speciated.
Bats are quite fantastic animals and there are so many species with interesting traits.
Just look at the ferocity of the way the Banana Bat tears into that piece of fruit.
Yeah, I agree. Look at the way they style their hair.
number 7 ‘wassuuupp!’
scary movie
I was hoping for a joke baseball bat entry. But, this list was still quite amusing, creepy and informative.
Some ugly looking bats.
An interesting assortment of critters. That hammerhead DOES look like a camel. Nature never ceases to amaze me. Good list.
i thought this one may have made the list…

BWA HA HA HA HA!
I like the punk bat and the moose bat..
Great list.
What about the short tailed bat of New Zealand.
It’s one of only two mammals native to the country and when it hunts instead of catching insects in the air it drops to the ground and hunts in packs for worms and crickets.
Wow thanks for mentioning that – I am from New Zealand and had never heard of it!
I knew of this bat; can´t understand why I didn´t at least mention it. I need to rewrite this list and make it longer!
I’ve always loved bats. I think they are kinda cute. I’ve seen some of the bats on this list, but not all. Never heard of the Hammer Headed one or the Chapin. I love the harido on that one……Punk Bat! Too funny!
Great list as always, TyB!
So glad to see the Ghost Bat from Trinidad, on here. Every night, as I sit on my porch, I see these bats feast on the bugs that hang around the street light.
Another quality list from TyB! Great job.
I also sit every night and watch the bats of my neighborhood hunt , and it brings back memories of my parents terrible murder all those many years ago…. then i think- this town needs a symbol, a symbol and a hero , not a hero this town needs but a hero it deserves . … then i tell my butler to bring me Cheeto’s and i watch cartoons the rest of the night, in my underwear .
Because everyone needs a hobby…………..mmmm..cheetos
You OK buddy ?
We have a family cottage; spend a lot of time out on the deck watching the bats dodge and dart over the water. Not usually in my underwear mind – although you could probably talk me into it.
Batman should atleast get an honorable mention
A list of butt ugly bats only tyb could make this work.
There turely are some ugly UGLY bats. I never knew there were so many types. As a bonus, I’d like to mention those giant fruit bats in the Temple of Doom movie – they were massive, although perhaps not so ugly.
A top list, great work!
This was a really neat list. It made me realize how little I know about bats. Another original list by TyB.
We have bats that eat surplus bugs in our own backyard. Literally. During monsoon season it’s cool to watch the bats go to town at the top, while bullfrogs take care of the ground level bugs that all congregate at our only streetlight.
Can’t say I’ve ever gotten a hold of one of our bats, have no clue of their species, but I don’t imagine they look anywheres near as interesting as the ones on this list.
This is the stuff nightmares are made of…couldn’t look past the first bat eeeeesshh!!!
I was always fascinatted by bats. I loved going to the zoo and looking at them.
That is until one got in my house. Eeeek!
How was I to know they’d have a can of shark- repellent Bat-spray handy?
ahhhh i love ace.
I scrolled quickly through the pics, and just read the explanations. those bats all look so scary.
Listversers: I know this is not proper comment etiquette but I need a favor. (I’m not a troll btw I’ve been on here along time and I have published 2 lists!) A while ago I was reading a list on here and I cant remember for the life of me what the content was but there was a part about some very obscure country or island in the middle of nowhere that produces the worlds best honey. Apparentley there is a large wait list to order honey from this place because of the short supply…. does anyone remember reading about this on a recent list? I’m trying to locate the info and I can’t remember. I know that isn’t much to go on but if someone remembers I’d really appreciate knowing what list it was.
By the way… the above list was awesome – yes I did read it. lol
You must be looking for this http://listverse.com/2010/08/24/top-10-unusual-islands/
YES! Thank you so much!
fascinating!
The mohawk bat is sooo cute! The wrinkled one scared me at first but after seeing it again its actually pretty adorable… But maybe that’s because I love bats
Very interesting! Thanks for a very fresh list.
CRAZY!!
I think the weird animal lists have to be my favorites
Thanks for another great one.
Top shelf list again thanks TyB.
Nice list – had not heard of most of these delightfully gross creatures.
Cool bats TyB. Pretty good list too – but not as good as I’ve come to expect from you. Ferinstance – what are all those wrinkles and folds for? (something about increased surface area?), that bat that smells so unique/funny – what does it smell like? Tubular nostrils are good for what? (I’m assuming it works like stereoscopic sight – for locating food?). That tube nosed bat – those pinprick pupils – do they expand to fill out the whole eyeball in the dark? Seem pretty teensy weensy….
Awaiting your reply with anticipation….
Still pretty awesome; I just would have liked more.
Yeah, I’m sorry, I wrote this list a long time ago – probably one of my first- and didn´t even remember it! It came as a total surprise to me too. I agree it’s way too short, unfortunately it may be too late to write a new, longer version, which sucks because I learned many more things since I wrote this.
The wrinkles and folds actually improve the bat’s sonar! Some bats produce the sounds they use to navigate in the darkness or inside caves with their mouths, but others use their noses. These species usually have more wrinkled faces than the others, because the wrinkles form cavities that make the calls louder and more effective.
Bats as a rule don´t smell good; I have never personally sniffed a Chapin’s bat, but it is said to smell very bad… although girl bats think it’s the best perfume in the world of course.
I have handled other bat species and some of them smell really, really bad, like a dead animal.
And yes, the pupils of the tube nosed bat are especially adapted to a nocturnal lifestyle; as you can imagine this bat doesn´t have bad eyesight at all, it can see much better than a human in dim light. You will notice that its face has no wrinkles; it doesn´t rely on sonar to navigate.
BTW, I’m not sure the bat in the Banana Bat entry is the creature I had in mind; maybe a namesake with a more “normal” face. Banana Bat snouts are huge!
Hope this was helpful!
Does anybody know why bats have such weird faces? it must give them some evolutionary advantage, but I can’t imagine what it is.
It could just be that with poor eyesight they don’t need to look handsome to get a date?
lol makes sense
Thanks, Jamie. That explains it!
#1 is kinda cute. but 2, 4, and 7 are good old fashioned nightmare fuel.
Great pictures. #1 looks more than a cow or something than a bat.
Holy ugliness Batman!
creepy
a bat got trapped in our house once,I’ve never been so scared,in my entire life.
Bats aren’t really dangerous to people, you know…
#4 looks like my mom….
wow
Didn’t know there were so many different kinds of bats:). Great list.
Love the nature lists. This one is awesome!
I’d call the hammer headed bat, “the moose headed bat”.. Just sayin’.
Sweet list dude! Glad you didn’t just “wing it”!
Another great list from TyB.
I’m from the Philippines but I never saw that tube-nosed bat.
The mohawk looking bat definitely rules. It should be named mohawk bat, or punk bat. That will make it sound much cooler.
By the way, the “A girl or a doll” link on the bottom is… well the girl obviously had breast implants (which depreciates her value) but damn she looks so… tasty.
Awsome list. The last two just left me with a wtf on my face.
Bats are so cool! http://www.crittercatchersinc.com
I think The Most bizarre Bat is Robin…. he use motorcycle..
Another in the long line of fantastically wonderful Lists by TyB!!!
I was unfamiliar with any of these bats, basically because as much as I read about Natural Science, I hate and avoid bats.
We live in the woods teeming with wildlife. Our front porch was, for years and years, the roosting place of a good sized, golden furred bat. It made it’s home in the dimmest corner of the porch, directly above the front door and made cleaning the wooden porch a daily chore.
We tried many things to urge it to move, but all proved ineffective.
Then, last summer, I went out the kitchen door and the bat was huddled against the house in broad daylight. It was shivering.
I called Animal Control, but they were busy with larger problems and told me the bat sounded rabid, not to touch it, and asked me if we had a small caliber weapon in the house.
We did, of course, living in the woods you tend to have a couple of sized weapons, just in case.
I was advised to shoot the bat, not to touch the body or any “parts”, and to dispose of it in the trash.
I felt so ridiculous standing out there with this long BB rifle at point-blank range ready to shoot the bat…until the word “rabid” began to resonate in my head. I told it I was sorry.
I shot the thing. I killed it. I had never killed anything before and it was the strangest feeling. I never want to feel like that again.
Awww….but you had to. It was suffering.
I love how Animal Control makes you do all their work now. I called them about a possum and they told me to get a trap and catch it and THEN call them. I was like, “Um, isn’t that YOUR job?”
Bats! I love them. They are useful animals, eating insects and pollinating things. Weird little guys, but very neat.
