We all remember Scooby Doo: the cartoonish jokes, the predictable plotlines, the laughable characters. But what the majority of people remember the most are the strange āmonstersā that seem to plague the Mystery, Inc. gang. Here I have compiled, in no particular order, some of the oddest villains from Scooby Doo. Please note that I am not including any āreal monstersā like the ones from the newer movies. Up front I must apologize for the quality of some images – unfortunately there isn’t a great archive of Scooby monsters around.
First appeared in The Tar Monster, 1978
I know that the Tar Monster appeared several times, but what the heck! Heās a monster made out of tar! The villain behind him in the original series was Mr. Stoner, who was trying to scare away the archaeologists from the Sanctum of Byzantium so that he could steal the templeās ancient treasure.
First appeared in Hang in There Scooby Doo, 1977
This is another one of those monsters that makes you think, āwow, those Hanna-Barbera guys really ran out of ideasā. This guy was actually Jonathan Jacobo, who was terrorizing a local hang-gliding contest so that he could win with no competition. This is another one of the monsters that appeared in Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed.
First appeared in Safari, So Goodi!, 2002
This is a fairly strange scheme, so I thought Iād include it. The Hunsecker couple were trying to kidnap various African animals to sell as exotic pets back home. They did this by painting the wildlife in fluorescent paint, and then emitting a supersonic pitch from their boat. This made the animals go crazy, so everyone thought they were demons. However, they underestimated Shaggyās love for Scooby when they kidnapped him, too!
First appeared in Donāt Fool with a Phantom, 1970
I find this one to be fairly cool just because it looks so awesome. The Wax Phantom was the owner of a radio station who wanted to get away with embezzling a lot of money from his station by blaming it all on the crazy butler. However, the Gang manages to catch up to him and captures him with a wax shower. I find that interesting because they also got Scooby and Shaggy in the wax shower, which would have killed them instantly.
First appeared in Spooky Space Kook, 1969
Hereās another one that I picked just for looks. āItā was the creation of a farmer who wanted the military to move off his land. The looks and artsy flair that they added to āItā and his spaceship make this villain way cool. It was also interesting as the show started to probe into a dangerous area for TV of that time: the military being not-so-nice.
First appeared in Bedlam in the Big Top, 1969
Hereās one that I picked just because it was so creepy. I, personally, am very afraid of both clowns and hypnotists, so a hypnotist clown ghost is incredibly frightening. The culprit in this episode was the recently fired circus hypnotist, who creeps me out even when heās out of costume.
First appeared in Mystery Mask Mix-up, 1970
I thought Iād put this one up here just because it wowed me with its incredible racism. No Chinese voice-actors were used for this episode, so the American actors had to improvise with garish fake accents. Throughout the episode racial slurs are made, and the villains act very, very stupid. So thatās bad, and there are also a lot of animating goofs in this episode.
First appeared in It’s Mean, It’s Green, Itās the Mystery Machine, 2002
This one was odd in a few ways. For one, the monster was actually THE MYSTERY MACHINE. For another, we get to hear a lot about the back-story of the Mystery Machine and Freddy. The villain here is a crazed soccer-mom bent on getting her kidās band back together.
First appeared in Wrestle Maniacs, 2005
Hereās another weird one. Almost breaking the limits of violence and creepiness for Scooby-Doo, The Titanic Twist was a wrestling ghost who would go around beating people for no apparent reason. There was actually blood in this episode, and the portrayal of wrestling culture was more than a little creepy.
First appeared in Gold Paw, 2005
Okay, a monster made out of GOLD? How cool is that? And in addition to being made out of gold, he can melt through walls and turn other things into gold. A pretty epic monster, made even more epic when itās actually a robot made out of cookie dough engineered by an old lady to break into Fort Knox. Tell me thatās not cool.

scooby dooby dooby dooby dooby
Scooby dooby doo where art thou boo boo goo goo..
I used to love Scooby Doo and can remember all of these villians! Great list, epic monsters!
Excellent list. Brings back so many memories. I'm not sure about everyone else, but the movie, on Zombie Island, was a surprisingly great movie for the Scooby Doo franchise.
You know what, I'll agree with you. I was 8 when the movie came out, and at the time I thought it was cool. The fact that the zombies were real, and just hearing about it in the preview… I was all over that back then. x)
That was the best Scooby movie ever! Second favorite was 'Alien Invaders'. I love Scooby!
I don't know! I liked the Witches' Ghost one, but I did also love the Zombie one. xD
this has gotta be the zaniest listverse subject ever, seriously how do you come up with a gem like this
Ha! I love this list basically because Scooby-Doo makes me laugh. Why? The animation is hilarious. I remember and love all of these older ones, but don't know these newer ones. Most of the newer ones look lame… Like the Mystery Machine? Wow… "It", lol, that laugh is so damn creepy. I always liked the clown one, but remember the puppeteer? That one creeped the hell out of me. "Backstage Rage"… Holy *****. But hey, uncreep yourself out by watching the one with the Mummy; COOOIIIINNNN, COIIIIINNN! Hilarious. Nice list.
agree the old ones are the best.
If the old woman created a monster that could turn things inot gold, why would she need the gold from Fort Knox?
Also, all these people creating these amazing monster. Seems like alot of effort for little gain. I mean, to win a gliding contest??!!
Hey why the hell there are 3 homepage links at the bottom of the page??..the 'Top 10 lists' led me to assume that a list has been compiled of the top 10 list from all the lists…
Search Engine Optimization. I was just doing a little trial. It is moot now anyway as the new design will remove all of those little changes here and there
Oh yeah Jamieyeah, I know about that..BTW LV doesn't need SEO..
Cool list!!!!!!! i remeber iv loved scooby doo from the time i started watching TV ( it was a chilly autum morning and there was a feeling of………wait i digress) . I used to also dig the electrical moster at the ski resort . As i got older i realised that shaggy is a fullblown pot-head , sloppy , longhair ,lazy, always got the munchies , talks to a dog and rides aroung in a flower power van – He's the Best!! I also used to crush on Daphne so bad (babe!) ! Velma was cool too . But if there was 1 thing that *****ed me off it was Fred – i hated that preppy *****! It was a family thing coz my 2 bros despised his as well. Seriously what a condescending bastard.
All in all awesome list . Very fun topic .
my take on shagg is better put
- c man
well i think crack is about the only thing i havent (and wont) try so i guess ill have to take your word for it.
nah—–
tyrone biggums is on crack.
snoop dogg is on weed.
shaggys actions and demeanor point straight toward blotter acid.
loving this list
i used to love scooby doo (:
Well done Herringswordsoflucifer,
Interesting list and completely random. outstanding work
Love the old cartoons. The garbage kids are watching today is awful.
Ha. I was wondering why the skeleton in a space suit wasn’t there. And then I played ‘It’. I think he was the scariest villain when I used to watch this.
this list sucked , i love scooby doo but this list was just stupid, and a waste of time, personally i think they were all stoners, except shaggy who i think had a more serious problem with crack hence his appearance and dependancy on a dog and the others, his irrational fear and paranoia, yeah they were all definately touting the weed but shag had a more serious problem, poor guy
"IT" scared the heck out of me as a kid. Remember the guest star episodes? Phyllis Diller, Tim Conway, Don Knotts…
Great list! It made me remember "The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo" (which will be available on DVD soon). This triggered my nostalgia for Vincent Price and I began wondering why I have seen the top ten female voice actors on Listverse, but not a list of male actors. Maybe someone should write a list? Orsen Welles, Mel Blanc, Vincent Price, Hank Azaria, Seth McFarlane, etc. Oh yeah, maybe the Youtube guy who does 100 impressions in 5 minutes.
charlie alder is also great…
Ruh roh!
I love Scooby Doo! In fact I still watch it.
'It' was one of the scariest when I was younger. This list brought back a lot of nice memories. Thanks!
I wish I was the Ghost Clown, so I could get Daphne to do *****ual favors for me.
Sweet, we can sell the Gold Monster on ebay!!!!!!
I always wanted some of the ***** Shaggy was smoking.
HELL the dog is talking!!! Dude, where are the Scooby Snacks???
You're afraid of hypnotists? LOL.
Dude all hypnotism is is role-playing. Hypnotism exists purely because people believe it does so they give authority to the individual they presume has this "power" – all he's actually doing is leading you through presuppositions that make you think you are under some sort of trance and then you do everything he says because you believe you have no choice – you don't even think about it.
It's still alright to be afraid of clowns, right? Or do you have some science mumbo-jumbo that disproves that too?
Come on! We all know that it's just old man jenkins from the abandoned amusement park!
Fantastic list! Brought back a lot of memories
This show cured me of my fear of ghosts (not real), but made me very wary of grownups that would do anything (i.e. try to scare me) to get their own way! lol
It's amazing how many scenarios they thought up which could be resolved in a dastardly manner by dressing up as a ghost/ghoul/monster and trying to scare the crap out of people
When I was a kid, “It” from Spooky Space Kook SCARED THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUTTA NEW. Still does, too. Same goes for 10,000 Volt Ghost. All in all a good list that brought back memories of Saturday mornings. The show usually tended to have some pretty bizarre and trippy “monsters,” but that’s kinda what made Scooby Doo memorable.
I loved this list. I've seen about every episode of the older ones, when I was little, it was my favorite show!
My Scooby Doo fleece blanket and Scooby Doo pillow that, to this day, are still on my bed. Oh, and my Scooby Doo pajama pants!
Great list! I remember all these monsters (minus the ones from the more recent years.)
And as Scooby would say…Rooby rooby roo!!
This list is so sad. It reminds me how I never had cable growing up, and Scooby Doo had just moved from channels I could get when I was old enough to watch. Entertaining list though, definitely.
It's unfortunate that the two most interesting ones don't have clips.
I think I was the only kid who didn't watch this show. I can't say I regret that.
Man I love the old episodes even though the new episodes are what I grew up during (I’m 16.) Th Alien Invaders movie was really good though. I actually got hooked on the old episodes when I got tricked by a bootlegger in NYC to buy the Alien Invaders video but it was really just a bunch of old episodes.
Great idea for a list. Thanks.
Great list – brought back a lot of memories, I think the older cartoons are best.
I used to get a good laugh when the gang were scared of something and they clung to each other shaking and vibrating
And I would have got away with it too, if it weren`t for those blasted, meddling kids and that Dog!
I love the comments and am glad people liked the list – Scooby was one of my favorite shows as a kid (until that stupid scrappy came along).
I agree. Hated Scrappy Doo. When they brought him on, it ruined the show. I was happy that he got punched in the movie. I clapped at that part.
Puppy Power!!!
What a disappointment…
scrappy doo was — no doubt — the yoko ono of scoobydom
Do you people remember the ice cream monsters? They were vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavour. That was an unusual episode. I still remember my first episode: it was with the scuba diving ghost. Also one cool one was the miner 49er. I liked that a lot. Maybe cuz they didnt rerun it so often and it was quite a treat seeing it.
The oldies are the best. And the flinstones or the jetsons, jabber jaw, josie and the pussy cats.
As a kid i always thought ill always love the flintstones or whatever show. But i re watched swat katz with the two cats that had a really cool airplane but they just seemed so unfunny and kind of boring. Maybe old shows arent meant to be watched ahain when you’re younger. Spoils a bit the memories.
wasn't that the episode with Cass Elliot?
Ps: damn sorry for the double post but forgot to say. This list is one of those lists that makes LV so great.
I remember watching Scooby as a kid. My older brother told me to "check out this show, it's so dumb, every episode is the same." The animation was horrible too. They'd be running away from some weird monster and the background would keep repeating. I always wondered, was her name Velma or Thelma? I could never tell for sure. Everyone knew Shaggy was a stoner, Daphne and Fred had a thing going on, and that Velma, er Thelma was the first lesbian cartoon character.
This was such a kooky idea for a list, I love it!
i distinctively remember one episode set in a ice cream factory with three diferent coloured ghosts? that had to be the craziest idea for a scooby doo villain oh yer and the phantom racerhad to be the scariest
Ris show raught me roper english
Hahaha Mr. Stoner
Awesome. You could do ten more lists like this, "Scooby Doo" had so many odd baddies. One that should have been on the list IMO was the Disco Phantom, who wore a crazy purple, blue and red suit and had a white face and KISS-like black make up around his eyes. He scared the ***** out of me when I was little.
A very rare miss on listverses part. I’m a little disappointed in you.
ZOINKS!
The Ice cream ghosts always made me hungry.
Enjoyed the read, Scooby Doo was a great show back in the day.
Saw something the other day that made me laugh – almost all of the "villains" featured on Scooby Doo were arrested just for scaring people. Not committing actual crimes or anything
and they wouldve gotten away with it too ! if it werent for those meddling kids!
Haha, this hilarious, I always remember the huge prayin mantis one, remember that? With the professor who pretended he was getting chased but it was really him as the ghost? I think it was anyway.
Or what about the one with Johnny bravo!
Omg, I remember that episode they were on Johnny Bravo, how they showed Fred and Daphne indirectly letting everyone know that they go off looking for clues, together, to make out! Lol! That was classic.
God, I love Johnny.
thanks so much for all the support! this is my first list and I am so happy with how it was recieved!
Most excellent and random idea for a list! Great compilation.
Can't believe I used to get nightmares from watching Scooby Doo. Sounds sooo silly when you see this list, haha!
Omg, I hate Scooby Doo, but this list is cool…
The villains were actually likeable. I liked Scrappy Doo. "Lemme at him! LEMME AT HIM!!!" Lol! So cute…
I had a deprived childhood. We were one of the last families I knew to get a television, then we were not generally allowed to watch cartoons.
Good list…brought back a lot of memories (although I only watched these original scooby doo episodes in syndication.
real good list…
used to watch this show a lot until courage the cowardly dog arrived…
hmm.. what if i write my own list on the weirdest courage the cowardly dog episodes?
that show has some seriously wacked-up storylines…
Zoinks!!
You can't have a villain list without the 10,000 volt monster.
That was a cool looking villain.
i swore i heard that "It" sound once when i went to bed…….I hid in my blanket all night…..
the creeper was definately the scariest villian of all time, with his hunch and im pretty sure hes called the creeper because he is CREEPY! I HAD NIGHTMARES ABOUT HIM FOR WEEKS
Um, huge mistake you made about "It". The farmer wasn't trying to get the military off his land. He wanted to scare off another farmer, his neighbor, off his land, so that the neighbor would sell the property dirt cheap and then he (the farmer dressed as "It") could profit by selling both pieces of land to the military who were interested in re-opening the old base and surrounding lands.
Also, what about the "Disco Demon" (basically it was a horrific, rainbow-colored Gene Simmons look-alike)? That thing deserves to be on this list WAY MORE than the zoo animals, Mystery Machine, or the pterodactyl!
There is no blood in the tiantanic twist episdoe! I just watched, anyway, if there is, where is it/ Anyway, isn't it creepy when you see that man twisting that man to death?
Rooby dooby…
*See man get twisted to death*
"doo?"
WHERE IS THE BLOOD? >:(
wheres THE BLOOD! REPLY!
The Spooky Space Kook is DIRECT ripoff of a b-movie crapfest called The Robot Monster..A gorilla with a space helmet and skull for a face called the Robot Monster. Totally Awesome
