We all love rags to riches stories, but it seems that people are almost as fond as riches to rags – or stardom to failure. This list looks at ten famous or successful child stars who went on to failure and, in at least one case, death. It is a well known fact that child stardom can often lead to disaster – perhaps due to the lack of routine that most children benefit from, but it certainly seems that the wealth that comes of it is frequently not worth it.
Lohan got her big break at 11 when she was cast as the lead in the remake of “The Parent Trap.” As she rose to stardom in both movies and music, she also became a fixture on the Hollywood party scene. The years of fast living caught up with Lohan in 2007. First, she was almost fired from the film “Georgia Rule,” with the producer releasing a memo noting, “We are well aware that your ongoing all night heavy partying is the real reason for your so-called exhaustion.” Then Lohan went through a series of car crashes, arrests and stints in rehab. On August 23, she pleaded guilty to DUI and cocaine possession and was sentenced to one day in jail and three years of probation. As of 2009, Lohan was reportedly sober and trying to work her way back to the top in Hollywood.
Spears started as a pre-teen on “The New Mickey Mouse Club” before launching into pop stardom with the 1998 release of her debut “…Baby One More Time.” In 2007, she underwent a very public breakdown in front of the army of paparazzi that follows her. In addition to losing custody of her children to ex-husband Kevin Federline, being charged with a hit-and-run, and several brief stays in rehab, Spears attacked a photographer’s car with an umbrella and shaved off her hair. On January 3, 2008, police were called to her house when Spears refused to hand her children over to Federline’s representative. A month later, she was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward.
The former “Partridge Family” star fell on hard times after the series ended, at one point living out of his car. He was twice arrested for cocaine possession, in 1985 and 1990. Bonaduce later admitted that he was so addicted to crack that he got serious burns on his fingers and lips because he wouldn’t wait for the pipe to cool down before smoking it. In 1991, he was arrested for assault and battery for beating up a transvestite hooker. He and his wife Gretchen chronicled their faltering marriage in the 2005 reality TV series “Breaking Bonaduce.” Episodes featured Danny falling off the wagon, abusing steroids and attempting suicide.
When he was 10, Renfro was discovered by a casting director and hired for “The Client,” based on a John Grisham novel. His only previous acting experience was in a school play sponsored by the anti-drug organization DARE, which would prove ironic given Renfro’s repeated arrests on possession charges. In 2000, he and a friend were charged with grand theft for attempting to steal a 45-foot yacht. They were caught because neither remembered to untie the boat from the dock. In 2005, Renfro was one of 15 people caught trying to buy heroin during a police sweep of Los Angeles’ skid row area. He spent 10 days in jail in 2006 after being convicted of driving under the influence. Renfro died from a heroin overdose at age 25.
At nine, Driscoll was Disney’s “golden boy” and at age 13 he won a miniature Oscar as outstanding juvenile actor. His career started unraveling when he developed severe acne upon hitting puberty. An arrest for marijuana possession at age 18 further scared off producers from hiring him. As his drug use went from pot to heroin, Driscoll had a series of run-ins with the law. After being arrested for forging a $45 check and robbing $450 from an animal clinic in1961, he was ordered to the California State Narcotics Rehabilitation Center for six months. On March 30, 1968, two boys playing in an abandoned New York tenement discovered Driscoll’s body. Death was the result of hardening of the arteries from long-term drug abuse. Since Driscoll was found with no ID, he was buried in an unmarked pauper’s grave. He was identified through fingerprints a year and a half later.
Plato began making commercials at age seven and at 14 was cast as Kimberly Drummond in the hit TV show “Diff’rent Strokes.” She later admitted that she drank and used drugs during her years on the show. In 1984, Plato was let go from “Diff’rent Strokes” after getting pregnant by her boyfriend. She had trouble finding work, appearing in B-movies and soft-core porn. In 1991, Plato was arrested for using a pellet gun to rob a Las Vegas video store. A year later, she was nabbed for forging a prescription for Valium and served 30 days in jail for violating probation. At age 35, she died of a prescription drug overdose that was ruled a suicide.
Another troubled “Diff’rent Strokes” alum, Bridges portrayed Willis Drummond on the show. His legal troubles began in 1983 when he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. He was arrested again in 1987 for making a bomb threat against a car dealership and in 1989 for pulling a gun on his mechanic during a dispute over a bill. Bridges faced his most serious charge in 1989 when he was tried for attempted murder after allegedly shooting a crack dealer eight times during a cocaine binge. He was acquitted thanks to high-profile defense attorney Johnnie Cochran, later part of O.J. Simpson’s famed “Dream Team.” Bridges was arrested again in 1997 for assault and battery after ramming a friend’s car following an argument, but was acquitted once more. After this latest transgression, he became a born-again Christian and began speaking at schools about the dangers of drug abuse. In a positive change of pace, in 2001 Bridges made headlines by rescuing a woman who had fallen out of her wheelchair while fishing.
He appeared in fifteen of the “Our Gang” shorts and dozens of feature films as a child. His biggest adult role, as the sidekick in the sci-fi TV show “Rocky Jones, Space Ranger,” ended after he was arrested on weapons charges in1954. While out on bail, Beckett fled to Mexico, got into a shootout with police, and spent four months in prison. Back in the States, he added to his record with arrests for passing bad checks, assault, drug charges and multiple drunk driving busts. In 1963, despite being in a wheelchair after his latest DUI crash, Beckett was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after trying to stab his neighbor. At age 39, he died from an overdose of barbiturates. Critic Leonard Maltin called his death “a particularly sad end for someone who, as a child, had shown so much easy charm and talent.”
He first topped the charts at age 11 with his brothers in the Jackson 5. As an adult, he emerged as one of pop music’s biggest superstars ever. He also began laying the foundation for his “Wacko Jacko” reputation, although his rumored 80s eccentricities – hanging out with a chimp; trying to buy the Elephant Man’s bones; sleeping in an oxygen chamber – seemed harmless. Then in 1993, the father of a 13-year-old guest at Jackson’s Neverland Ranch accused the singer of sexually molesting the boy. The allegations were supported by Jackson’s sister LaToya, who said, “Forget about the superstar, forget about the icon. If he was any other 35-year-old man who was sleeping with little boys, you wouldn’t like this guy.” Jackson settled the lawsuit filed by the child’s family, reportedly paying over $20 million. Criminal charges were dropped since the accuser was no longer willing to testify. Despite the close call, he admitted in a 2002 interview with Martin Bashir that he slept in the same bed with “many children.” The fallout from the interview led to Jackson’s arrest and trial on child sexual abuse charges. Due in large part to serious credibility problems with the prosecution’s main witnesses, Jackson was found not guilty on June 13, 2005.
Blake began performing in a song-and-dance act at age three. In Hollywood, he became a regular in the “Our Gang” short films. He had a miserable childhood with an abusive, alcoholic father, which may have contributed to later bouts with drug abuse and a reputation as a difficult to work with perfectionist. Despite his problems, he found success as an adult in the hit detective show “Baretta.” In 2000, he married actress Bonnie Lee Bakley after DNA tests proved he was the father of her child. Six months later, on May 4, 2001, after Bakley and Blake had dinner at an Italian restaurant, she was killed by a gunshot to the head while waiting in their car. Blake explained to police that he could not have been responsible, since he had gone back to the restaurant to retrieve a gun he had left at his table and was there when the shooting occurred. When questioned, no other diners or employees could recall Blake returning. Despite the weak alibi, he was found not guilty of murder. However, much like the O.J. Simpson case, a jury at a later civil trial found Blake liable for the wrongful death of his wife and ordered him to pay $15 million to her three children.
(Dis)honorable Mentions: Corey Haim (Valium addiction), Corey Feldman (arrested for cocaine and heroin possession), Drew Barrymore (entered alcohol and drug rehab at age 13), Jodie Sweetin (former “Full House” star; crystal meth addiction), Adam Rich (former “Eight Is Enough” star; arrested for stealing prescription drugs from a pharmacy), Eddie Furlong (cocaine addiction; arrested drunkenly trying to free lobsters from a tank), Gary Coleman (pleaded no contest to hitting an autograph seeker) and Macauley Culkin (arrested for possession of marijuana and prescription pills)

i’m glad you added stars from earlier not just nowadays, good list, a harder list would have been child stars that are still stars (not reality crap tv stars either), how about hte girl that played stephanie from full house isn’t she a junkie stripper or something like that?
April 20th, 2009 at 2:13 am
I haven’t even heard of half these people. Based on his fame, Michael Jackson should be #1. But, he never killed anyone.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:24 am
Interesting, but sad, list. It is such a shame to see that much potential go down the drain.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:39 am
It raises the question of how any of us might react to the sudden fame and fortune at an early age.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:46 am
this is hilarious! haha! and true!!!
April 20th, 2009 at 2:47 am
though i sorta liked la lohan..but…nah..hahahah
April 20th, 2009 at 2:47 am
seven!
April 20th, 2009 at 2:51 am
Frankie Lymon should be mentioned, as well as Carl Switzer, aka, Alfalfa.
April 20th, 2009 at 3:11 am
It seems like the whole cast of the original Little Rascals should be on here. They all seemed to have ended up with bad luck.
Kirsten Dunst should be on the (dis)Honorable Mentions too with the drug problems she’s been having lately.
And I know she was a bit older when she started acting but Judy Garland should be on here too. She was only 16 when she did the Wizard of Oz. There aren’t many stories as sad as hers.
April 20th, 2009 at 3:23 am
What about Linda Blair?
April 20th, 2009 at 3:39 am
What I don’t understand is why there is such an obsession with Lindsy Lohan. Her acting is competent — but that’s all. It’s not like she’s freaking Sarah Bernhardt. I could go to most any small college in the country and find an actress who could blow her off the stage. So why all the fuss and obsession for someone with a very small resume stuffed with mediocre movies?
April 20th, 2009 at 3:45 am
How about River Phoenix?
Oh… and Danny DeVito… he’s always been a child and he’s always been bad!!
April 20th, 2009 at 4:06 am
makes u wonder how that little guy from babies day out turned out.
April 20th, 2009 at 4:14 am
Late O’Day: Exactly what I was thinking!
April 20th, 2009 at 4:25 am
wow lindsay lohan looks dead in that picture!
April 20th, 2009 at 4:42 am
sarah bernhardt?
wow, could you have used a more obscure reference?
at first i thought you meant sandra bernhard, which really made me laugh.
April 20th, 2009 at 4:48 am
Ah… youth, and then growing up to be ro-..oh, nevermind..
Here’s waiting to see where today’s kids (Hannah M, High School Musical, Potter Kids) end up XD
April 20th, 2009 at 4:55 am
Lillo Broncato:
He starred in “A Bronx Tale” with Robert Deniro. Recently sent to prison for 10 years for his hand in the murder of an off duty police officer in New York.

April 20th, 2009 at 4:57 am
Great list, now how about a list of ‘Top 10 Child Stars Who Turned Out Good’? I’d bet you wouldn’t be able to find the full 10! Opie Cunningham would most likely top that list though.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:02 am
I guess gingers are the only successful child stars since I can only think of Jackie Earle Haley and as Bill said Ron Howard.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:19 am
Very good list. But don’t forget about Carl Switzer. He played Alfalfa in the “Our Gang” series of movies. He became a drunken gambler, had run-ins with the law and in 1959 was shot to death over money allegedly owed to him by his business partner. He was 31.
April 20th, 2009 at 5:49 am
i am surprised to see that the kids from Different Strokes turned out to have pathetic lives. They all looked so happy on the show(which is on in half an hour from now).
April 20th, 2009 at 5:51 am
Why is Buddy Hackett holding Brittany’s head in picture 9?
April 20th, 2009 at 5:57 am
Another child star from the past was the girl who played Buffy in Faimly Afair, Anissa Jones. It was a pretty popular show from the late 60’s to 1971. They sold a doll based on the one she had on the show. Sadly she died at age 18. From WiKipedia, “On August 28, 1976, after partying all night,…Jones was found dead in the bedroom of a friend’s house. The coroner’s report listed her death as an accidental drug overdose. Cocaine, PCP, Quaaludes and Seconal were found in her body… The coroner who examined Jones reported that she had died from one of the most severe drug overdoses he had ever seen.”
April 20th, 2009 at 6:13 am
It is so sad that people that were (mostly) blessed with promising lives threw them away. Seeing as so many child stars end up with such terrible problems, there are obviously some major psychological issues that go along with being famous and professional at such a young age. I try to remember that when I start thinking so negatively about Lindsey Lohan or Britney Spears… they may be not so great (okay, terrible)at their jobs and seemingly taking their lives for granted, but there is clearly some medical mental condition that ends up in the heads of most child stars. Somebody should probably look into what exactly is causing it and what can be done to stop it.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:13 am
Also from Different Strokes, Gary Coleman’s life is something of a mess. After all the money he made as a kid was mismanaged by his parents and manager, he was reduced to working as a security guard to support himself. He filed bankruptcy. He was charged with assault for punching a woman; then charged with disorderly conduct for a disagreement with his wife; and then disorderly conduct and reckless driving for arguing with a man and then running him over with his car.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:14 am
Nice list.
@Andyb123 & MT. That’s Sad. Didn’t know that about Alfafa.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:35 am
Great list. I will admit, when I saw in the intro that there was at least “one dead” child star, the first name that popped into my head was “River Phoenix.” I’d say that’s the only notable missing entry for me.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:41 am
This is a great list. I love reading about tragic hollywood stories. Aside from Alfalfa, another omission from this list is Anissa Jones.
There are plenty of child stars who went on to prosperous careers – Ron Howard, Jodie Foster, Elizabeth Taylor, Roddy McDowell, Mark Paul Gossalar, Jessica Alba, Jackie Cooper, Jackie Coogan, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Annette Funicello, Joey Lawrence, Peter Billingsley, Jimmy Boyd, Angela and Veronica Cartwright. There’s fifteen right there.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:47 am
should include the chick who played “Judy” in “Family matters”….she became a hardcore porn star and became addicted to weed…she was on that reality show celebrity rehab
April 20th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Dana Plato’s story really made me sad.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:50 am
Wow…What an eye opener. I believe I will have my kid read this. Interesting list!
April 20th, 2009 at 6:55 am
addicted to weed? lmao.
April 20th, 2009 at 7:03 am
This is always a good reminder that fame and fortune do not make you ultimately happy.
April 20th, 2009 at 7:18 am
18,19, Bill and Brendan- you could add Rick(y) Schroder to that list.
Lindsay Lohan is less than a year younger than me and I loveeeeeeeeeeeeed her when she was in disney movies (the made for TV ones), then Parent Trap and Mean Girls. I’m so upset with how she turned out- I still have her Barbie. I really hope she turns things around.
That said, Britney Spears and Drew Barrymore (part of the honorable mentions) have really cleaned up. They DID go bad, for sure but they came back around. Not sure they should count.
April 20th, 2009 at 7:28 am
I try to imagine growing up in a world that couldn’t get enough of me when I was little- meeting other stars, getting fan mail, people telling me how cute/talented I was…
…only to be rejected by the same world when I was in my early teens. That has to be harsh.
…but even those listed who kept working through their teens and as adults managed to botch things up. What’s up with that?
p.s. A list of the top 10 child actors who somehow didn’t destroy their lives might be interesting, if you can find ten. Shirley Temple, Jackie Cooper, Annette Funicello, Jodie Foster…
April 20th, 2009 at 7:31 am
Yes, Other Our Gang people should be on here. It is not so much that they turned out bad, it’s that so many of them had terrible demises.
Darla died at 47 due to Heptititis i think ti was.
Alfafa was killed over money at an early age.
Froggy died of a motorscooter incident at age 16!
Bobby Hutchins died in a WW2 plane accident.
Stymie battled drugs for a long time.
Jay R Smith was murdered by a vagrant when he was elderly.
If you are interested in Our Gang, I suggest the Leonard Maltin book. It was made in the 70s and again in the 90s.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:17 am
Interesting list. thanks for adding child stars from back in the day too.
i don’t agree, however, that Britney Spears ever ‘went bad’. She had a mental breakdown from paparazzi and stress, etc. The only rehab stints she has done have been for stress, exhaustion, and psychological problems, not drugs or alcohol. Britney just couldn’t handle the pressure anymore. She in no way ‘went bad’ and I really think she should be replaced on this list with one of the ‘honorable mentions’.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:17 am
It seems to be such the part of a star’s life… Be it acting or music. Your heart has to go out to them. Thank God there’s help for them now.
http://www.casabellasoberliving.com/
April 20th, 2009 at 8:18 am
@ 30. Dre – you cannot become ‘addicted’ to weed the way you’re putting it.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:26 am
You can certainly become mentally addicted to weed. Ive seen it happen.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:31 am
Gosh, I grew up in a wonderful town! Thanks for the reminders, ChrisF.
I worked in the film biz for many, many years, and I can say with authority that the kids who make it through without becoming monsters are the lucky ones. Most of these kids have parents, or a parent, who are pushing like crazy to make their little darling a star. To do so, they forgo childhood, regular school, normal friendships and compatriots of the same age (hanging around almost exclusively with adults), are punished for not knowing lines, have no regular hours and no regular life.
And people wonder why these kids go bad?
April 20th, 2009 at 8:32 am
Its a lifestyle I would not want.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:32 am
Bobby don’t forget that 76% of the child actors from “our gang” lived longer than the average life expectancy for someone in their demographic. They actually had a less tragic existance than the average of the population from the 1930’s.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:37 am
#25. msulli22 – It is unfortunate that you automatically think that these children have a medical problem. I would bet you that in addition to what #36. Namowal said, most of these kids probably had parents that didn’t know how to handle their children as celebrities. The kids need to grow up outside the studio not inside.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:46 am
This list makes me smile.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:49 am
geez – what is it about Diff’rent Strokes that made the kids go bad?
glad to see Drew (my celeb-crush) make the honorable mentions, although she is one of the few to go bad early then turn it around.
i like the point/question about todays teen/child stars and where they might end up. Olsen twins, HP kids, Hannah Montana, HSM.
LiLo’s fate hasn’t quite yet been determined, but its currently not looking good.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:55 am
Sadly, I thought of another child star who died tragically. Although I don’t think he could be described as having “gone bad.” Jonathan Brandis was the kid who acted in The Neverending Story and a TV show, Seaquest. He committed suicide at age 27. He apparently had been depressed about his lagging career and been drinking heavily leading up to his death.
April 20th, 2009 at 9:18 am
ChrisF–A well done list–Younger people on here probably won’t know what I’m talking about but Robert Blake also made several movies playing “Little Beaver” to Bill Elliott’s “Red Ryder”–Blake is also the young shoeshine boy in “Treasure Of The Sierra Madre” with Bogart.Just a little trivia there.
April 20th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Sad but interesting list. Also note that Danny Bonaduce and Todd Bridges are two of the regular stars/hosts of TruTV’s “The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Dumbest….” (one of my guilty pleasure shows). Other “stars” on taht show include Gary Busey (just a font of wisdom) and former notorious figure skater Tonya Harding.
April 20th, 2009 at 10:02 am
One more successful child actor that hasn’t been mentioned: Jason Bateman
April 20th, 2009 at 10:22 am
I am not sure about this but on Bobby Driscoll it was written that he died of “hardening of the arteries due to long-term drug abuse”, and I don’t think that is a risk factor for atherosclerosis. I suppose tobacco is, but I don’t think that is what is implied. If there is a source on that I would love to read it. I was under the impression that aside from endocarditis & venous sclerosis, there were few serious side effects (except, maybe that you turn into an @$$hole). Anyone with more info send it on over!
April 20th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Sorry, I hope I’m not posting too much today, but Paul Peterson was an actor from The Donna Reed Show in the late 50’s to the early 60’s. (Prior to Donna Reed, he was actually fired from The Mickey Mouse Club TV show for acting too much like a kid on the set.) He started an organization that supports former child stars. It’s called A Minor Consideration. It trys to ensure better working conditions for child actors and to help when the roles stop coming in. They try to help them transition between working as child actors and living adult lives.
April 20th, 2009 at 10:59 am
How about Michael J. Fox? He’s had a pretty fantastic career without succumbing to the perils that some child stars do. Leonardo Dicaprio is another…
April 20th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Great list – mmmm I think a lot of it has to do with parental control – when they are young, and become celebs. the movie makers are out big time to sighn contracts. A lot of these parents saw big bucks on the horizon, and endorsed the contract.
Once they have that strong hold on you – Its like giving up your kids for adoption.
Some survive some dont – as this list has just shown us.
Only my opinion
Thanks ChrisF
April 20th, 2009 at 11:24 am
Re: Successful child actors
-Peter Ostrum. (to me, success of post-child stardom can also mean those who quit the business before they go bad. He didn’t like the environment, so he left. Props to him).
-Keshia Knight Pulliam (Rudy from the Cosby Show)
April 20th, 2009 at 11:38 am
“Blake explained to police that he could not have been responsible, since he had gone back to the restaurant to retrieve a gun he had left at his table”
uhmmmmmmmm? im thinking he should have thought that out a bit better
April 20th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Good day all. Another spooky(ly) interesting list. I thought I wouldn’t find this list at all interesting as I’m certainly not one for scandle and gossip. Someone mentioned that fame and fortune is not all it’s cracked up to be. I take a slightly different view in that fame and fortune are relatively harmless compared to the media spotlight of the press. Innocent parties can turn into ‘Drunken Brawls’ in a brush-stroke. One lousy picture in a hundred can ‘prove’ a star has fallen. Yes the press loves to build people up, but it also loves to knock ‘em down again. However, that doesn’t neccessarily mean a person would succum to this pressure – as one guy said on the Hemp list – it takes more than gasoline to make a fire.
Kudos to segue for bringing a welcome note of humanity to the table.
Finally, another child star who remained good – Dean Stockwell. wadda guy.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Regarding Lindsey Lohan–just look at her mom! If Dina Lohan is her best (closes) example of How To Be An Adult, it’s no wonder she’s failing! That woman is amoral, grasping, and perfectly happy to live her life basking in her daughters’ infamy. Betcha anything the little sis (Ali, isn’t it?)and little brother end up totally screwed up also.
April 20th, 2009 at 11:50 am
I SHUD BE ONZ DIZ LEEST LULZ
April 20th, 2009 at 11:53 am
sorry, Humanity should read Reality (to the table).
April 20th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Thank you, Lifeschool. There were days I would go home to my own 3 children, and just be so thankful that I never let allowed them to get into the biz. I’d be heartbroken over some adorable little child who, at 4 or 5 or 6, had no clue what it was to be a child, and I’d make sure we’d do something outrageously silly and fun and unexpected.
Even they, all of whom knew kids who worked in the biz, wanted nothing to do with it. Smart kids.
April 20th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
What about River Phoenix???
April 20th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Macauly Culkin was in Home Alone wasn’t he.
Blimey,, thats dodgy.
But nice list! I love this site =]
April 20th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
JR- It is clear that most of those children ended up with severe psychological problems- most of them likely had depression, to say the least. It is often what causes people to act out to seek drugs, sex, or whatever else they think can comfort them. And depression is a medical problem, regardless of what caused it- stress, pressure from society, diva parents, etc. The fact that it occurs so frequently in child stars should be looked into closer.
April 20th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Lindsay Lohan’s story makes her sound better off right now.. maybe you should add in there her crazy antics with her girlfriend
April 20th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Drew Barrymore?
April 20th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
I thought for sure there’d be mention of that Power Rangers actor that committed a triple murder in order to get a boat.
Any mention of Robert Blake immediately stirs up memories of Lost Highway.
April 20th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Lauren Chapin didn’t make the list?
April 20th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Judy Garland. Like many, manipulated by the system. It just took her longer.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Michael J. Fox is awesome, but if I am correct didn’t reach stardom until he was an adult. He was 20 or 21 when Family Ties started.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
As far as “Different Strokes” goes, does anyone know whatever happened to the kid who played Sam in the last couple seasons? I hope he didn’t turn out as bad.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
This is what happens when parents see their kids as a paycheck, not a child.
April 20th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
42. segue – I have to agree with this. This kind of parenting can do irreparable damage. I’ve seen kids in sports and in other activities, not show biz, with similar parents and those kids are a mess.
With the show biz kids, they are given a lot of attention, their every whim catered to. No wonder they are so ill-adjusted.
The ones that seem to do okay have some kind of grounding in their off-screen lives.
April 20th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
I know he doesn’t fit on this list as he wasn’t a child, however this list reminded me of Bob Crane from Hogan’s Heroes who died from circumstances I don’t remember. They found a ton of porn he had secretly filmed and it came out that he was a violent sexual addict. Pretty weird
Bucslim (23) Buddy Hackett! That was funny!
April 20th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
trfan: Danny Cooksey who played Sam on Different Strokes is still acting. He was lead singer of a heavy metal band called Bad 4 Good back in the early ’90s and he played John Connor’s friend in Terminator 2.
I used to see Todd Bridges at my bank. He always seemed very friendly and happy.
April 20th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Another one who turned out well was Kim Richards. She was in Nanny and the Professor and then the Witch Mountain movies fron Disney.
April 20th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Great list but i think britney must be no. 1
April 20th, 2009 at 11:37 pm
Can anyone remember the girl that was in The Crow? I think her name was Rochelle Davis (or something), she played Sarah (I think, it’s been a while since I’ve watched it). That was like the only thing she was ever in. I wonder how she turned out.
April 21st, 2009 at 12:33 am
If this list was made 2 yrs later, miley cyrus would be one it
April 21st, 2009 at 6:05 am
Somehow I’m not surprised that Winky went bad.
April 21st, 2009 at 7:12 am
Doogie Howser seems to be doing OK.
April 21st, 2009 at 8:35 am
It’s tragic that so many of their lives become such messes. Even calling this list “Child Stars Gone Bad” is kind of sad. I’m not sure I’d describe them as having “gone bad”, but more like they’ve become desperate, depressed, addicted, or even mentally ill.
April 21st, 2009 at 9:04 am
Kim Richards is Paris Hilton’s aunt.
April 21st, 2009 at 9:51 am
Another child actress that I can think of for the child stars not gone bad is Alyssa Milano.
April 21st, 2009 at 10:11 am
Bad acting, maybe.
April 21st, 2009 at 12:35 pm
i think you should replace britney with frankie lymon.
April 21st, 2009 at 1:52 pm
This is a list that needs to be re-visited so to include Carl Switzer, River Phoenix, Judy Garland, Lauren Chapin, Lillo Broncato.
April 21st, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Remember the little sister from Family Matters. They dropped her like yesterdays trash and she went on to be in porn.
April 21st, 2009 at 5:49 pm
It’s not sho-biz. It’s youth + plenty of $ + easy availability of drugs. This happens to kids everywhere, but if it’s a media personality everyone hears about it. It’s too much too young.
April 21st, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Michael J. Fox, who never went wrong, and counted himself “the luckiest guy in the world”, began his career at fifteen, when he successfully auditioned for the role of a ten-year-old in a series called “Leo and Me” (1981) in Canada. He moved to Los Angeles in at 18, picking up small parts in T.V. and movies and finally got the part of Alex Keaton in Family Ties at 21.
I worked with him on several occasions, and he was always a true gentleman, a gentle man, a nice guy. At meal times, when other stars would most often retire to their trailers to eat (or whatever), he’d grab the same food we ate and sit with the crew.
Super guy.
April 21st, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Winona Ryder perhaps? Not really a ‘child star’ but she did start out pretty young and go a little weird eventually
April 22nd, 2009 at 7:34 pm
What about Different Strokes sister show Facts of Life? How did they turn out? The Brady kids had some run ins with drugs etc too.
April 22nd, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Oh and on the list of Child stars that turned out ok should be Traci Lords. She started out acting in porn at 16(?), but now has a regular acting career(bad acting but still not porn).
April 22nd, 2009 at 9:02 pm
And Wil Wheaton. Besides being Wesley Crusher on Star Trek The Next Generation, he starred in movies like Toy Soldiers and Stand By Me. He had to deal with a lot of crap froma few nuts Trekkies. He is a devoted father, author, and geek. One of the survivors for sure. You can even chat with him at twitter.com/wilw
April 23rd, 2009 at 7:38 am
britney spears currently has songs topping some charts though, so we can’t really call her a ‘failure’ i mean .. shes back isn’t she.
she was up then down and now up again.. somehow.
April 23rd, 2009 at 9:42 am
Robert Downey Jr. has also went from bad boy to good boy.
April 24th, 2009 at 5:41 am
so when do they put miley cyrus on this list?
April 24th, 2009 at 5:45 am
@Zoombafoo: when she follows Jamie Foxx’s advice, I’d say…
April 24th, 2009 at 8:05 pm

April 25th, 2009 at 8:38 am
before&after photos would have been better..
April 25th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
Brian Bosworth of “Blank Check” fame.
April 26th, 2009 at 8:32 am
*snort*
Opie Cunningham
I almost wet myself
April 26th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
Kirk CAmeron seems to have turned out okay. What about Haley Joel Osmet? I haven’t heard anything about him lately.
April 27th, 2009 at 4:41 am
Fame isn’t everything it seems children.
April 27th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
“Although his rumored 80s eccentricities – hanging out with a chimp…” xD
Is there anything more ridiculous (unless it’s a scientific animal researcher) than that??
April 27th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Oh, and that L. Lohan photo, should be put as a reference for a cocaine addiction stage.
April 30th, 2009 at 5:06 am
u shallow assholes, a beautiful human being like Mr. Jackson does not belong in this completely judgmental list of yours .
He was, is, and always will be the best thing that happened to entertainment.
Judgemental people like yourselves are the inane wackos.
April 30th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
109. Stargirl: “Judgemental people like yourselves are the inane wackos.” Ummmm….calling the kettle black, aren’t we?
MJ has brought a lot to the music industry. However, he fails as a human being. Chimps, children, masks, nose, going white….I could keep going here. He deserves a place on this list, since he did it to himself.
It doesn’t mean that you can’t still worship him like you are doing in your post, but just don’t expect everyone else to follow suit.
April 30th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
109. Stargirl: I could get involved in this debate, having been personally involved with the whole Jackson action, but I won’t.
Why?
It wouldn’t change your mind, if you use one whilst declaring on “Stars”, and you wouldn’t believe me anyway. Half of the people reading this wouldn’t believe some of the stuff I’d have to say!
His is a sad, sad story, but it’s what he did to himself, after reaching his majority that is the saddest.
Whoops! I was about to go into MJ rant. Full stop.
May 6th, 2009 at 12:29 am
i seriously had NO idea brad renfro died….i was reading it and was like HE DIED?!?!?!…and immediatly googled it lol. wow it’s crazy so many young stars end up so…shall i say out of it.
May 9th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
91segue:Canada has given Hollywood many actors who went on to stardom, Michael J Fox is one of our best, a true mensch
who while battling a debilitating illness remains upbeat and positive. Thank you for giving us the glimpse of the man on set.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:45 am
113. lostatsea, glad to put in a good word for a good guy! I could have written volumes, but you got the idea, and that’s whats important.
I could relate horror stories about kids who are now adult stars (and still problems behind the scenes, mostly, but sometimes for all to see) but would rather concentrate on the best of the best.
You’re right about Canada having given us a lot of fine actors, and ones who seem to have values that Americans and many Europeans don’t (note* I said many, not all, Europe has given us an entire constellation of stars who deserve the name and all of the perks that go with it).
Yes. If you haven’t figured it out by now, I loved my job, my career ( one of several, sure, but the main one, the longest lasting, the one that defined me)and would have continued but for circumstances I did not have under my control.
Still, I am left with a lifetime of fabulous memories; some are so funny they still make me laugh until my sides hurt; some so poignant I still shed a tear, or feel a deep sorrowful hole in my chest.
But Michael J. Fox! He demanded YooHoo on set every day, and always drank it on breaks. One of the producers asked him why, when there so many finer choices available.
His response?
He had a contract with with YooHoo for several million dollars for commercials shown overseas, not in America, and he felt an obligation to support their product!
THAT is an honest guy.
May 14th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
The antidote to the the Diff’rent Strokes kids would be the “Cosby Kids’ they all turned out just fine. Keshia Knight Pulliam is now a sitcom actress on ” House Of Payne” on TBS and Malcolm Jamal Warner has recently released a spoken word album and remenber Tempest Bledsoe’s short lived Day-time talk show? Minor exception of Lisa Bonet, she just married young to rocker Lenny Kravitz but never any mention of her abusing drugs, alcohol, or pre-adolescent boys!
June 8th, 2009 at 8:44 am
There are many people with adictions. Myself being one.(8 years clean). I am some what torn about these young kids (Spears,Lohan) who have so manys fans mostly kids. They want to follow in thier footsteps. How sad for our young ones who think its cool the life these people have. Although I believe adiction is not a choice I believe that we have the choice to get help. Some stars just keep going and going. Your choice. But stay out of the media if at all posible. Before that one child decides that its cool to do what you do. LIFE IS SHORT. BE THE SOLUTION NOT THE PROBLEM.
June 22nd, 2009 at 8:45 am
Shirley Temple is considered one of the most popular child stars of all time but she moved on with her life because she knew she was only ever gona be famous for being a childstar she now has a great life and hasnt seemed to messed it up Leonardo Dicaprio is the same he still acts and does some great movies he doesnt take the whole fame thing to mind though. there seem to be the celebrities who want everyone to kiss their asses because they were famous as a kid and now they dont have that anymore they cant cope with it they got to much given to them at a young age that they cant cope with i find it sad
June 29th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
This list needs an update because Michael Jackson died on 26th June 09
July 6th, 2009 at 2:57 am
your list lost all credibility for not having Jaimee Foxworth.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Good list, but I think you need to put Michael Jackson’s year of death on here /:
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:45 am
-> Stargirl: I totally agree with you. MJ was a wonderful human being but unfortunately the world is full of people who judge before they really get to know somebody. He made brilliant music and helped many people all over the world. He, unlike a lot of celebrities, put his money to good use by helping those who aren’t as well-off as he was.
-> oouchan: “he fails as a human being. Chimps, children, masks, nose, going white” … Well. Going white… MJ couldn’t help that… So therefore, he did not do it to himself. He had Vitiligo. A condition of the skin. He bleached the parts of his skin that were not affected by this. If he hadn’t, the media would have tore him apart for it. MJ’s father constantly bullied him about the size of his nose so it is only natural for him to be insecure about it and have a nose-job. He also benefitted by being able to breathe better so he could sing better. He didn’t have a childhood like all of these child stars because it was taken over by fame. He also has a good nature and a good sense of humour so having child freinds is understandble. Gavin Arvizo has recently admitted that he lied about the claims against Michael to get money off him so that one is cleared up too. Like i’ve said before, MJ didn’t get a childhood because of fame. So by putting masks on his children protected their identity so their childhood would not be effected in the same way his was.
Bubbles, MJ’s chimp: Michael rescued him from a cancer research clinic in Texas in the year 1985. One of his many charitable actions.
-> Lucy: I totally agree with you about Britney, she never went bad at all… It was the media that drove her to have a mental breakdown. Through no fault of her own.
Oh, and yeah, MJ’s date of death should be added now. But i have a better proposal… How about taking him off altogether? Would be much better, don’t you think?
I think i’ve said all i need to… X
August 9th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
HAHAHA they deffently forgot Paul Reubens AKA PeeWee Herman. Nothing beats jackin’ off in an adult movie theater and then having child pornography.
August 30th, 2009 at 11:56 am
No, they should definitely keep wacko jacko on this list. He was the most fucked up of all of them.
September 7th, 2009 at 9:15 am
Wow, I watched a crime show about Robert Blake and his wife’s murder yesterday — weird coincidence. Great list, I agree with everything!
September 25th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
I think that all those actors and actress and singers are very good and escpecially “Lindsay Lohan” and “Drew Barrymore”, Drew is one of the most good actress of the world and Lindsay too, but everyone have wrong and good times like both.
Barrymore is 34 years old.
Lohan is 23 years old.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
And also “Macauley Culkin”.
well, EVERYONE IS A UNIQE ACTOR OR ACTRESS.
but “Paris Hilton”… NO!
she’s a bit*h!!
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:58 pm
you should update the Michael Jackson one.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Why?Wait… He died?!?!
